Fashion Frenzy It’s Not About The Buttons By Denise Brady Acanfora, Certified Personal Stylist

So…I have this cool vintage leopard jacket that I love – except the buttons. The buttons are plastic rosettes and I don’t care for them. They don’t match the vibe or the style of the jacket. Each year, when I flip my closet to fall and winter clothes I tell myself that I’m going to change the buttons. Then I get busy and never get around to it. But not this year. I planned to zip over to Stitch and Sew in Lakewood to pick out the perfect buttons. A 20 minute zip-zip over, pick out buttons and zip-zip home. Then I texted my Mom and asked if she wanted to come along. She texted back “I’d pretty much go anywhere with you.” Such a Mom response.

Denise Brady Acanfora Certified Personal Stylist

There was construction and a detour so the trip took a little longer than usual. No matter. We chatted the whole way over and laughed about finding the right turn. When we got inside I took out the jacket. She said she actually liked the buttons that were on there. Then I showed her what I had in mind. We voted against the tortoise buttons. We both liked the gold buttons. Once I had them all laid out - and she could see what I had envisioned- she was on board with the change. I told the owner that I needed 4 buttons. My Mom leaned over and told me to get 5 buttons so that I had an extra if I needed it. The owner smiled and said “listen to your mother – that’s good advice.” Then my Mom took out money and paid for the buttons. I told her I would pay. She put her hand on mine and said “now, every time you wear that jacket you’ll think of me.” Such a little thing. Button shopping. But button shopping with my mom created a memory that will last forever. And she’s right. I will think of her every time I wear that jacket. Button shopping turned in to lunch. Then lunch turned in to coffee together back at her house. A lovely afternoon unfolded all because I asked if she wanted to go button shopping with me. It’s easy to get caught up in the doing. It’s easy to get caught up in getting things done. But how delightful to create a memory with someone you love. It’s the reason I go with my daughter when she gets her nails done. We go to different nail salons so I just sit and wait while she gets her manicure. But I always say yes when she asks me if I want to go with her. Who knows what we’ll talk about in the car. Maybe a song will come on while we are driving and she’ll tell me why she likes it so much. Which then changes my mind about that song – because now I think of my daughter when I hear it. My wish for you in the coming year is to remember to take time to create memories. Remember, it’s not about the buttons. It’s about who goes button shopping with you. Happy New Year!

Healthy Morsels, II Go with Your Gut! by Lynn O’Hara

I was recently diagnosed with severe gluten intolerance. It seems my gut is in terrible shape and its issues have led me into a state of body pain that for years I was contributing to being an old, beat up soccer player. Fortunately I found a Functional Medicine doctor who finally was able to link my various orthopedic ailments to one thing-my gut. I always felt my issue was more systemic than docs were willing to concede. In their defense, I got all the tests for rheumatoid arthritis, chronic inflammation markers, etc. and they kept coming back negative. This doctor, however, ordered different tests. Markers for gluten antibodies and leaky gut came back sky high. Markers for antibodies to my thyroid came back sky high. It seems what I’m eating is creating an environment in my gut and body that is causing my immune system to attack my own body.

ourselves foods we love the taste of in the moment we want them. Instant gratification can beat out feeling terrible even just a few hours later. When it comes to weight loss the instant gratification is so much easier to give into when the goal of losing a certain amount of weight is so far off.

But here’s the thing, you deserve to feel as good as you can. It is a nurturing and self-loving act to feed your body the way it needs but is tough to eat differently from the way you’ve become accustomed. Good news! You can make the changes slowly. In fact, you should make the changes slowly. I obviously shouldn’t eat gluten-containing foods and I don’t to the best of my ability. But I’m also trying to significantly reduce the amount of fruit and dairy I eat. These are three things I love and my diet will be pretty spartan until I become more imaginative with what I can eat. So I try to make small changes that aren’t so disruptive. I love a smoothie in the morning but one that didn’t have about 6 servings of fruit in it would better serve me! So I’m slowly changing it. Maybe I won’t even feel I need a smoothie in the morning after awhile.

I’m telling you all this for a reason. The way I have eaten over the years has changed as I’ve aged. I’m a dietitian/nutritionist so I know how to eat. At least I thought I did. Now I have to change it further and that’s a hard thing to do. If I don’t change how I eat (and some of those changes are yet to be figured out so detective work is required), I will continue to deal with body pain and fatigue. So, I have some choices to make. We all have choices to make.

So take the opportunity of the winter months to rethink how you eat. Is it a way that serves your body well? What small changes are you willing to make that you can build upon? Small changes create small improvements and we really need to embrace those small gains. No improvement in how you feel is too small. It’s all good. It really is. Until next time, eat healthy, be happy!

Whether you want to lose weight or control your blood sugar or even diminish your heartburn, we all have choices to make. Sometimes it’s really hard to make the choices that your body needs you to. It seems so simple, doesn’t it? If you feel better avoiding greasy foods, you avoid greasy foods. But no, we eat the foods that cause us to feel like garbage and then we beat ourselves up for doing so. What a struggle! It is hard to not give

Rover Rescue Speaking Dog by Lauren Kehoe

Don’t you wish you knew what your dog was saying? Dogs can be reactive and vocal for different reasons. Some common ones include fear, excitement, barriers, and anxiety. Reactive can be a sign of overstimulation in the environment. Examples of reactive behavior can be anything from barking or growling to lunging and snapping. When handling a reactive dog, the greatest trick is to catch them before they hit the threshold of overexcitement. Once an energy level is above a certain point (usually a very intense reaction), any previously learned tricks or distractions are blown out the water. The key is to intercept the dog before its behavior is pushed out of proportion.

Lauren Kehoe is an avid animal lover and dog owner.

Knowing a dog’s triggers is a huge advantage in preventing reactivity. Keeping the dog at a reasonable proximity from stimuli enable them to focus and be reinforced for good behavior, rather than letting the dog practice barking, lunging, or other negative things. If a dog is reactive to other dogs, use visual barriers to supplement fencing or close the blinds where dogs walk past. On leash walks, it can be helpful to have more than one handler so that both can be on the lookout for other dogs in the vicinity. Each dog is different, and all have different stopping points. Some may be fine practicing sit and down thirty feet away from another dog, while others may have to be turned and led in the opposite direction. The same technique can be applied to other things such as cars, bikes, and people. Some dogs are more taken aback by everyday household items such as blenders, vacuums, and hairdryers. While pushing a dog is good, baby steps are always recommended. If a dog is terrified of the vacuum, you can try to start out outdoors while someone vacuums indoors. In this scenario, the dog can hear the noise but is not too overwhelmed to be constantly distracted. Try feeding the dog high value treats like peanut butter or cheese, only to be given when the scary object is around. For less food motivated dogs, you can try petting or playing with a favorite special toy. As a dog becomes less phased by the stimulus, you can increase the training difficulty, such as moving the dog indoors while the vacuum is in another room. Every dog is an individual, and move and grow at their own pace. The key is to not let the dog practice the undesirable behavior. Prevention means less stress and frustration on both you and your dog. We may not know a dog’s history or exact triggers, so don’t be afraid to test out different things and see what works. No training plan is linear, there is often backsliding. Don’t be discouraged; any step and work in the right direction is helpful. The world can be scary and overwhelming but doesn’t have to be.

Back to Earth Why You Should Be Drinking Rose Nectar by Natalie Berko

Rose water can be traced back to the 10th century, during the Persian Empire where rose petals were used to decorate and flavor Persian cuisine. Cleopatra reportedly used rose oil as a fragrance. During the Crusades, rose water made its way through Europe where it was used to wash hands before big medieval feasts. Since then, popular beauty products ranging from facial sprays, masks, and serum all cite rose water as one of their star ingredients. 100 percent pure rose extract, known as “rose nectar” possesses an even greater therapeutic effect than the oil or water from the flower. Pure rose nectar from the Damask Rose nutritionally contains some pretty powerful medicinal properties including antioxidant, essential vitamins, flavonoids, and other bioactive compounds said to aid in skin, brain, and eye health, as well as digestion. Rose nectar also is said to contain antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-depression properties as well. There are over 7000 varieties in the Rosacea family, however only a few can source pure rose nectar. Cultivated for over 300 years, the Bulgarian Rosa Damascena is one of the best known oil-bearing flowers containing one of the highest vibrations of all the flowers in the world at 320 Hz. At a vibration this high simply applying topically, or inhaling its scent can drastically change the way we feel. It is important to recognize the difference between rose nectar and rose extract. Rose extracts are generally mixed in with oil or distilled water. Pure rose nectar is obtained from undried, organic rose petals after undergoing a complex process of steam distillation. The process of obtaining rose nectar is a slow art. Damask roses are ready to be gathered for extraction after three weeks in late spring in the Rose Valley of Bulgaria. Each flower is carefully hand-picked at dawn and immediately extracted to preserve all of their 200 chemical compounds. This ancient remedy is making a comeback in this time when we are searching for more natural medicines its perfect timing. Not only is it perfect timing, it’s well studied and research has shown how beneficial it really is.

5 Reasons to Try Rose Nectar

Natalie Berko Certified Crystal Healer

#1 It May Promote Weight Loss The flower petals are rich in pectin, a type of soluble fiber found in most nutrient dense foods. Pectin can decrease fat absorption and create a feeling of fullness. After being digested, pectin will bind with fat and cholesterol in the gut and as a result remove them before they are absorbed into the body. #2 It Strengthens Your Immune System A high concentration of Vitamin C is found in pure rose nectar and when ingested rapidly absorbs in the body to support the immune system. Rose nectar also contains antibacterial properties that speed up the healing of injuries and scars. #3 It Helps Improve Your Skin Damask rose nectar provides protection from UV light, pollutants, and other environmental damaging factors. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties may help relieve acne, eczema, or rosacea. #4 It Gets Your Digestion Going Drinking rose nectar can improve your digestive health and combat upset stomachs. A study in 2008 saw a positive response in subjects after drinking pure rose nectar, as well as an improvement in the flow of bile, which can quell bloating, aches, gas, and other gastrointestinal discomforts. #5 It Can Provide a Mood Boost Consuming rose nectar has been shown to provide antidepressant and anxiolytic effects by calming your central nervous system. It’s even been said that the mere smell of the Damask Rose could reduce stress level hormones.

Shore Decor Fire and Ice

By Ashleigh Young Santamaria

Ever since my entré into the glorious world of tablescaping back in October’s issue, my neutral-leaning, minimalist tendencies have started to give way to … wait for it … color and layering! Though slightly less timeless and perhaps therefore even less economical, 2020 seems to be all about exploring colorful places and spaces we’ve never been before. In the spirit of New Year, new us, I wanted to share a few colorful trends we’ve noted of late in the ever changing, always fascinating world of interior design.

Ashleigh Young Santamaria

Fashion week is usually the harbinger of home trends to come and this year it seems we’re heading into warmer, more vibrant tones like golden yellows, mango, icy blues and soft greens. These all tend to work well with earthier neutrals which is great news for folks like me who aren’t quite ready to abandon my minimalist tendencies but do want to start being a bit more adventurous with color. Warmer shades like Red Pepper, Mango and Burnt Orange are all fun, energetic and rising color trends that we’re seeing everywhere in 2020 design from wall colors to bedding and everything in between. Restaurants and hotels tend to use these tones a lot to help make their spaces inviting and welcoming and these unusually versatile colors can be used as accent walls or to accessorize a room, as a little goes a long way. Behr’s Red Pepper shade or it’s fabric equivalent instantly adds heat and coziness to any room and they recommend using it for a dramatic accent wall. Luxury Italian bedding designer, Frette, has even jumped on this warm tone trend with their newly launched cotton sateen Bold Rectangular line featuring a white base with bold contrasting borders. On the other end of the color spectrum, icy blue hues have made their way into top home designers’ palettes, like the Sebastian swivel chair in Valhalla Aegean from Jonathan Adler’s Winter 2019 collection shown here with his turquoise Vesuvius hand-fired short vase next to a gold side table or this Cloud Navy Blue Quilt and Sham made from 100% naturally breathable cotton that’s free of toxins and synthetic finishes by luxury bedding brand Crane and Canopy. Navy blue in particular is once again growing in popularity (paint manufacturer Sherwin William’s Color of the Year for 2020 is Naval SW 6244) which is great for us 08742 homeowners who can’t bear the thought of abandoning our vacation-like beachy, nautical theme and these blue tones tend to pair well with earth tones, especially Champagne, which also helps contribute to a calming, serene atmosphere. Of course the best colors are the ones that make you feel inspired and happy and anything, even wall colors, can be changed back quite easily so why not raise a glass of bubbles to the new year, new adventures and yes, maybe even experimenting with a new color or two in your home in 2020. Happy Decorating!

The Power of Positive Thinking Back Pain and Stress by Allison Feehan, N.D., D.Psc., CRMT

According to Harvard Health Publishing Harvard Medical School, low back pain is the second most common cause of disability in the U.S. Over 80% of people will experience an episode of this pain at some point in their lives. The most common reasons for low back pain are disc injuries, sciatica, lifting heavy objects, or some other non-specific back injury. Since I work often with people who have chronic stress, chronic pain, trauma, and anxiety stored in their nervous systems, almost all of my clients have restrictions. A lot of those restrictions surface in the lower back in the way of pain. The iliopsoas muscle is becoming more and more popular in the reason for lower back pain. “Iliopsoas is the inner hip muscle whose function is to flex the thigh at the hip joint. It is a large muscle composed of the union of two individual muscles; iliacus and psoas major. It takes its name from the combination of the names of these two muscles. Iliopsoas is the chief flexor of the hip join.” When it comes to stress and anxiety, the psoas reacts to stress and anxiety. So, if you are stressed, your psoas may become tight like your shoulders and neck do, and if it becomes tight, the psoas can cause you more stress. If this muscle is constantly tight it signals to your body that you are in constant danger. It’s fight or flight or also known as your survival muscle. Liz Koch’s work suggests that since the iliopsoas is connected to the nervous system and that not only can it not be forcefully stretched but it also cannot be over worked. Releasing this muscle and allowing it to relax can release you from the psychological aspects of your pain.

Allison Feehan N.D., D.Psc, CRMT Owner of the Coastal Cottage 64 Bridge Avenue Bay Head, NJ 08742

Thankfully, there are some exercises to help release and relax this group of muscles. First and foremost, mindfulness. “A recent study demonstrated that a technique called mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) can help to reduce back pain and also improve emotional control by increasing brain blood flow to the frontal lobe. A full eight-week course in this technique may even improve anxiety and depressive symptoms as well. Practicing mindfulness involves activating a brain relaxation pathway by deliberately ignoring mental “chatter” and focusing on your breathing. When you do this, an “unfocus” circuit, called the default mode network, is activated.” In addition to mindfulness, I like to kneel and bend one knee forward aligning my knee with my ankle and slowly pushing forward. Do not over stretch here but stretch until you feel some relief. After this I kneel in a tabletop position and cross one knee over the other and gradually sit back. This stretches my glutes. Then, I make my way over to the wall and put my legs up the wall for about 10-15 minutes, giving myself ample time in this position. Once on my back I make sure my hips are close to the wall. I take deep breaths, breathing deeply into my belly and finding relaxation. This pose is great right before bed. This pose can actually aid in your slumber. Upon leaving this position, I transition into a butterfly type pose before I bring my legs all the way down from the wall. I bend my legs half-way down, feet hip width apart and then I butterfly my legs open, carefully to not let the soles of my feet to touch. I stay in this position for about 5 minutes. Lastly, if I have time, I use my foam roller to roll out my glutes, legs, and even my calves. The relaxation of the rolling helps to really calm me and my muscles. In closing, be mindful of your thoughts. Be mindful of how stressed out you might allow yourself to become. Be mindful to stretch. For more helpful tips and stretching moves, google iliopsoas, psoas, lower back pain or hip flexor pain. Remember to never overstretch especially when you are already in pain. Happy Stretching and cheers to no more back pain!

The Muse Life on the Road by Steve DeJacimo

Well, it finally happened. That concert by your favorite band you’ve always wanted to see 5, 10 or even 20 years ago, well, it’s happening. Especially on the higher end of that scale. There is a new batch of rockers, pop and otherwise, that are getting their Gibson guitars all shiny and ready to hit the road in 2020. A major tour announcement from Taylor Swift is one thing, but when you hear that Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett are doing a stadium tour……well, that just sounds kinda fun no matter what genre you listen to on a regular basis. I am sure we all know a song or two from those bands.

Metallica actually has a “home base” scenario set for touring that is very interesting. According to founder and lead singer/guitarist, James Hetfield, they actually set up in an Steve DeJacimo Owner, Typhoon agreed upon regional city for a week or so Media Publishing, at a time and do their tour dates from that LLC. centralized location. For example, for their East Coast dates, they actually stayed in New Jersey (not sure the specific town) and did their NYC, Philly and NJ shows during their most recent tour dates along the East Coast. Makes sense. I suppose. Just having the same bed for a week straight instead of a new one every other night, must be refreshing. Stable.

I am at that point where a good chunk of my favorite performers are touring less and less for various reasons. One reason is that they are just not into the rigor of being on the road for several days at a clip. It’s tough on the body. It’s tough at 25, much less, 55. I’ve done it myself as a former band manager and working for Live Nation. The road is a grind. For the elite stars, private jets help. Catering helps….and hinders. Great hotels. All that helps, no doubt. But, the schedules are tough. Touring is basically the main source of revenue for working bands. New or seasoned vets. Royalites still get paid when you stream music, but it doesn’t pay out like selling hard copy cd’s or albums did back 10-15 years ago. So, if you are a musician…. touring makes the coin. Therefore, bands hit the road more often and for longer periods of time to pay the bills.

POISON

Sadly, so many musicians have passed away in recent years. Many of them have been on the road when they passed. Sure, many times the fatal minutes included regularly prescribed drugs and possible overdoses. But one aspect rang true in the majority of the deaths. They were on the road. Chris Cornell of Soundgarden, Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park all passed away while on tour.
