Unfortunately, many of us have the bad habit in how we relate to ourselves. Our habits may come in the form of vicious cycles in how we approach our day to day activities and accomplishments.

We tolerate low energy or negative emotions in the absence of self-awareness. This is counterproductive in the possibilities for realistic, positive change. It’s pretty much also impossible to stay with the details of what is going on so we can sort things out.

We underestimate ourselves because it’s easy; with negative self-talk and use labels with ourselves and others. To stand by yourself and up for yourself takes courage and hard work.

We tend to put others before us so much that we put ourselves on the back burner. It’s similar to being a passenger on an airplane. If cabin pressure drops and the oxygen masks are released, we are told to put it on ourselves first before we can tend to others. We certainly don’t want to pass out before we can help our loved ones or fellow passengers. Don’t underestimate your health and how important it is to exercise, breath consciously, eat healthy, follow your ambitions, aspire to be better, or believe in yourself.

With confidence comes the flow of standing in your own power.

Taking control of your life instead of just sluffing off your possibilities of greatness. Understanding how you are underestimating yourself is a challenge too. One that shouldn’t be taken lightly and should be approached with curiosity rather than criticism.

Having a daily practice where you can check-in with yourself gets you in sync with your mind, body, and spirit. Sitting with your thoughts and emotions during meditation or prayer aligns us with gratitude and our intentions. A daily schedule that allows you 2-10 minutes of quiet time can lower your blood pressure, reduce anxiety, and connect you to the right path.

Even if your daily routine is exercise this too can align you to your goals and ambitions.

Probably the biggest indicator that gets the best of our selfesteem leading to self-doubt is telling ourselves we are stupid. We rarely see ourselves as smart, clever, creative, charismatic, beautiful, or handsome. We fear failure so much that we stand in our own way, therefore underestimating ourselves. Feeling “stupid” is usually more about being inattentive, perhaps inexperienced, or impulsive but all things that can be rationally reflected upon. Humor and laughter can help to diminish any negative thoughts or emotions. There are always ways to dealing with complicated issues.

Falling into a rut for any length of time can make us feel lazy or bored. We engage with negative emotions such as anxiety then compare ourselves to others making us feel like we are sinking further into ourselves. We may have a difficult time identifying and pursuing activities that make us happy and fulfilled. It is critical that you over-prioritize yourself. Find your own personal opinion and not the opinion of others. Nay-sayers can be extremely dangerous to your health. Hence, be safe and put your needs on the top. Remember, the only person that lives and knows everything about you is you.

Opportunities knock every day. If one passes another one will arise. Most importantly, there are always opportunities for positive change. Get curious about your potential and challenge yourself to not underestimate you. Gather your courage, your energy, and the will to understand yourself and allow yourself to shine. Each day may hold a higher or lower sense of self accomplishment, but every day should hold internal self-talk to put yourself first. Relax and allow for mental enhancement through action and vice versa.

Remember, limitations, problems, difficulties, and bad situations are all a part of life and yet just a parcel of life.

Are you being hypocritical of yourself these days? When a negative word springs to mind, adopt the mind-set to replace the negative with a positive affirmation for yourself. Think of this as self-care.

Rover Rescue New Resources Make Adopting Easier!

The dog you want is in a shelter. It’s a term thrown around a lot in animal rescue, but what exactly does it mean? We get a huge amount of applications for purebred dogs. As much as we can try and encourage individuals that mixed breeds are equally as awesome, some people have their hearts’ set on a certain type of dog. Instinctively, when that dog is not found in a local shelter, adopters will turn to pet stores or breeders. There is no reason to shame someone for wanting a specific breed, we just must work smarter.

What often isn’t considered is how many purebreds or mixes of a certain breed wind up in shelters.

Different regions of the country have different issues, which means different shelters can have completely opposite populations. The idea that purebreds are never in shelters is far from true.

Lauren Kehoe is an avid animal lover and dog owner.

A few months ago, I worked in a mentorship program in Edinburgh Texas, one of the highest kill shelters in the country. Animal control trucks rolled up and down their entry way every few minutes. Sometimes the vans carried mixed breeds or feral cats, but just as often they would pull up toting a perfectly healthy, adoptable purebred.

While Edinburgh is making drastic strides in improving its save rate, they are still euthanizing plenty of adoptable animals every day. Many of these include purebred dogs that would be snatched up in a second if they were in a different location. While adopting a dog from states away would have been an ordeal years ago, technology has made our world smaller and more connected.

There are some great resources for volunteer transports for dogs. A few of these include Doobert and Operation Roger. Doobert is an app where volunteers can sign up if they are making a drive and have space in their vehicle for an animal, and rescues can check to see if anyone is passing through in a way that is useful for them. Operation Roger is a website specifically for truckers who volunteer spots for animals while driving their cross-country routes.

While these are just two examples, there are other organizations and groups popping up as word spreads like wildfire regarding how useful these lifesaving resources are. Social media groups and platforms through places like Facebook also help route animals to their forever homes. It’s a simple yet genius idea and a great, convenient way to conserve resources. There are a ton of amazing people out there willing to help, and they are becoming easier and easier to find.

Petfinder.com is a great resource to start out searching rescues for dogs. After finding a good potential dog and speaking with the rescue or shelter, apps and the web can be utilized to try and find volunteer transport. A dog is rescued, and the adopter gets more specifically what they were looking for, usually at a cheaper cost. Everybody wins!

Shore Decor Spring Fever

Don’t know about you, Dear Reader, but I am definitely feeling the beginning of Spring in the air which is unleashing all kinds of possibilities in the magical land of home décor. It’s time to lighten and brighten and pave the way for days filled with more sun, fun and houseguests (and it seems like the number of houseguests one has increases exponentially the closer ones home is to the ocean, amirite?).

For fans of Marie Kondo’s “The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up”, March is a great time to clear out things that are no longer relevant to make room for new things to love. Homes tend to get cluttered over time, and this season interior design trends are going minimal where less is more to allow whatever aesthetic you’re going for to really pop.

I personally go around the house collecting all my blankets and throws, rugs, decorative pillows and accessories and put them into one large room. Items that no longer “spark joy” are put to one side to be sold on Facebook Marketplace or taken to the local donation center. The home items I keep might be used in different rooms this season to freshen things up and give them new life.

Of course, as the saying goes…”out with the old, in with the new”. And this season there are tons of scrumptious trends to help fill your home décor gaps. The ones I’m loving right now that seem to be showing up everywhere, from New York City showrooms to Home Goods, center around sustainable, tribal & classic items.

A few years ago, disposable fashion was all the rage. People were continually updating their wardrobes and home décor thanks to fast fashion brands and retailers like Zara, H&M and Target whose low cost, high trend items made it easy to switch up your look for less.

Nowadays, with more focus on sustainability and the environment, people are less likely to continue to filling up local landfills with last seasons throw rugs and instead are investing in recycled and earth friendly items with staying power. Furniture retailer, IKEA, is using more and more recycled materials in their products and one of their most dramatic examples is their Kungsbacka kitchen cabinetry, made of recycled wood and covered with a plastic foil made from recycled PET bottles. As you see, the “black” trend we wrote about a few issues ago is now moving from accent walls to kitchen cabinets. You heard it here first folks!

Natural wood items continue to be more popular than ever thanks to the rising tide of biophilic design, but now we’re seeing more and more raw wood items in classic silhouettes and designs. The classic designs make the furniture more timeless and less “disposable” and the unfinished wood means no chemical laden and environmentally un-friendly finishes harming the environment.

Over the winter we saw the giant hygge blankets all over Instagram, and now tribal décor sourced from around the globe takes its place in the spotlight. We’re seeing a lot of textured woven and ethically sourced home accessories, with a heavy influence from Africa and pops of terracotta color. Natural colored fibers continue to be timeless, while playing into the sustainability trend, like these stackable seagrass baskets we snagged from The Coastal Cottage in Bay Head, NJ. Natural cotton throws are everywhere, like this Safavieh Penton Fringe cotton blanket, many with fun pom pom or tassel embellishments inspired by Moroccan textiles.

According to Forbes Magazine you have 7 seconds to make a first impression. 7 seconds! It’s practically the blink of an eye.

If you never wear it – or it has nothing to do with the life you are creating and living - then it must go. Give it to a friend, donate it or consign it. It’s only getting in the way. A walk in the park may soothe the mind, but it also changes the patterns of the brain. One major difference between our current lifestyle is an increasing distance from natural settings. Most of us today live in cities and spend far less time outside in green natural spaces than people did generations past. City dwellers also have a higher risk for anxiety, depression, and other mental illnesses than people living outside urban centers. Historically, a remedy for ill health or low spirits would be to send someone to the quiet countryside or seashore away from the buzz of the city.

The beneficial effects of nature result not only from what people see but from what Natalie Berko they experience through other senses Certified as well. While direct contact with nature Crystal Healer has many benefits, individuals don’t need to spend time in a green environment to experience the positive effects of nature.

A study conducted by Rodger Ulrich showed that heart surgery patients in intensive care units were able to reduce their anxiety and need for pain medication simply by viewing pictures depicting trees and water. Since ecotherapy is an umbrella term for nature-based approaches to healing, the types of methods are many. One of these methods is nature meditation.

Nature meditation takes place in a natural setting, such as a park by picking something that attracts the individual to focus on.

The individual picks a pretty flower or an old tree and spends a few minutes contemplating how this aspect of nature relates to them and what they can learn from it. Horticulture therapy uses plants and garden-related activities to promote well-being.

Activities include digging soil, planting seeds, and weeding garden beds. Some other ecotherapy methods include animalassisted therapy, physical exercise in a natural environment, or involvement in conservation activities. Incorporating one or a few of these methods can have a great positive impact on yourself so make sure to take time to smell the roses!

Ecotherapy, also known as nature therapy or green therapy, is the applied practice of the emergent field of ecopsychology, developed by Theodore Roszak. Ecotherapy stems from the belief that people are part of the web of life and that our psyches are not isolated from our environment.

Connection with the earth and its systems is the core of ecotherapy. Many clinician who practice ecotherapy believe that the earth has a self-righting capacity that operates through complex systems of integrated balance. If people can harmonize with these systems, they may experience improved mental health. Ecotherapy is based on the idea that people are connected to and impacted by the natural environment.

Dr. Gregory Bratman’s group at Stanford has published a couple of papers following a small group of healthy volunteers told to go for a 5 kilometer walk in the San Francisco Bay area. Half walked along a busy street while the other half went for a scenic walk with beautiful views of the mountains and the bay.

What is stress? Stress is defined as, “a state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances,” I’d say that most people experience something along those lines on a daily basis. But what does it mean for our bodies to be under fairly constant emotional strain?

Stress can contribute to many health problems, such as high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and heart disease to name a few. According to the Mayo Clinic, common effects of stress on the body include; headache, muscle tension or pain, chest pain, fatigue, change in sex drive, stomach upset and sleep problems.

The effects of stress on your mood include; anxiety, restlessness, lack of motivation or focus, feeling overwhelmed, irritability or anger, and sadness or depression. Some of the common effects of stress on behavior include; overeating or under eating, angry outbursts, drug or alcohol abuse, tobacco use, social withdrawal and exercising less often. That’s quite a list!

We are living in stressful times and a return to a slower way of life is all but impossible. Take the steps of self-care now to avoid potential health problems in the future and to make your time on this earth pleasant and fulfilling. Until next time, eat healthy, be happy!

So, what can you do if you are experiencing any of these symptoms? Obviously the best thing to do would be to alleviate the stressful issue but that’s not always easy or practical.

The good news is there are things a person can do to help disengage the sympathetic nervous system (think fight or flight mode) for the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and relaxation mode). One of the best things to do is to meditate and practice breath work. Breathing in slowly and deeply, holding the breath for a second or two and slowly exhaling for a longer count than your inhale actually helps to calm the nervous system.

If you meditate as you do this you’ll be able to slow the mind. Anytime you notice a thought enter gently return your attention to your breath.
