The Pearl of the Andaman

P

huket; sun, sand, and sea, but Phuket has so much more to offer. Located approximately 862 kilometers south of Bangkok is Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, which is often described as the pearl of the Andaman, or the pearl of the south. Its natural resources; a rocky peninsular, limestone cliffs, white powdery beaches, tranquil open bays and tropical inland forests contribute towards making it southern Thailand’s busiest, and most popular island and province. Phuket borders with Phang-nga province to the north; connected by the Sarasin Bridge . The remaining coastline is encircled by the Andaman Sea; an area that is home to some of the best scuba diving sites in the region. Phuket’s topography is exceptional with 70 percent of the island covered with mountains which stretch from north to south and the remaining 30 percent being plains located in the central and eastern parts of the island. The island does not have any major rivers but does have a network of streams, brooks and creeks. There are only two seasons in the year; the rainy season (May to October) and the hot season (November to April). The main low season of Phuket is September and October as they are the wettest months. The best period for a visit, is from November through till February, when it is possible to see clear blue skies, feel the fresh sea breeze and marvel at the crystal clear water while lying on powdery, palm-fringed beaches. Average temperatures range between 23 C and 33 C. Phuket has a lot more to offer than just it’s pristine beaches and world class diving. Both history and culture are to be found; Sino-Portuguese architecture from the age of tin mining casts its spell delighting travelers to the old city, while Phuket-style hospitality has never failed to impress visitors from all walks of life. In addition, accommodation ranging from worldclass resorts to tropical-style bungalows warmly cater to the different needs of travelers. For seafood lovers, there is a lot more to sample than just Phuket’s famous lobster. Altogether, these characteristics make Phuket a truly unique destination. Enjoy your stay ! Getting to Know...

Sukij Thipatima

Brew Master/Owner of Full Moon Brew Work micro-brewery and pub

S

ukij Thipatima is an energetic young entrepreneur who has initiated amazing innovations at his recently-opened Full Moon Brew Work micro- brewery and pub located behind the big Chinese junk in Patong’s Junceylon. Baz Daniel dropped by for a chat and a pint.

here, so I rented the space at Junceylon and set to work opening the pub and brewery from last November.

What is your line up of beers right now and how are they selling?

How did you become Phuket’s first pioneering beer entrepreneur?

I grew up in Bangkok and when I was sixteen I started to slip out of my parent’s house at night and join my friends exploring the city’s clubs and bars. I was immediately fascinated by this demi-monde and the fact that one could enjoy all sorts of drinks in a sophisticated and tasteful way. I learned that beer, wine and spirits could be drunk selectively and provided excellent complements to good food, conversation and socializing and decided that I loved this world. My parents didn’t drink and so they thought this behavior was to be discouraged, but somehow it didn’t matter to me as I had found my passion in life. I went to the ‘States to study and while I was in Greensboro in North Carolina I took a bar tending course and then obtained a job in the bar in the Sheraton Hotel and learned the trade through ‘hands on’ experience. I then managed to get a job back in Thailand as a management trainee in Heineken’s marketing department and I persuaded the owner to let me spend six months working in the brewery itself, brewing the beer. This solidified my passion for the world of beer and taught me a lot about the processes of brewing. I then joined Diageo in their new products group and later became the brand manager for Smirnoff in Thailand. All this experience stimulated me to think about actually going out on my own and following my dream of pioneering the brewing of

‘east meets west’ type beers that had never been produced before.

How did the opening of your Full Moon brewery and pub in Phuket actually come about?

I have to say it was just a dream that I kept alive while I was working in my corporate jobs in the industry in Bangkok. I kept thinking, “why not do something really different? Why not brew and sell beer that’s never been made before using uniquely Thai ingredients?” I took a Craft Brewing course at Research & Teaching Institute of Brewing in Berlin (VLB Berlin) during one holiday and explored small scale boutique brewing. I gained experience in other small scale breweries during the course, but when I talked about my ideas of using Thai ingredients like black sticky rice, or coriander they said it couldn’t be done. I returned to Thailand more determined than ever and last year, when I turned thirty, I thought well it’s now or never! I thought a holiday place like Phuket which has a lot of international visitors would be more receptive to my uniquely Thai beers and I liked the idea of living

We currently have three types of beer plus specials like the ‘green beer’ that we’ve been selling in March for Saint Patrick’s Day using pandanas leaves, lemon grass and wild honey. We have a pale, refreshing Thai-style Phuket Lager made with Thai Gaba rice from the King’s Royal project to deliver a sweet and malty aroma. We also have a Dark Ale which uses black sticky rice combined with caramel and chocolate malts to deliver a richly flavored dark colored brew. Finally we have Oriental Wheat beer which combines wheat, oatmeal, Thai tangerine peel and coriander to create a fresh buttery textured white beer. All the beers are hand crafted and use only natural ingredients with no artificial additives. The pub also offers a full range of Craft Cocktails, which use only fresh fruit. The special cocktail is Thailand’s official signature drink, “Siam Sunrays” which features fresh Thai herbs blended with super premium spirit. The response has been really good and is accelerating month on month. About sixty percent of our customers are tourists and the Phuket locals are discovering us and enjoy our friendly sociable atmosphere, full of fun and conversation. After all this enjoyable chit chat there was little else to do but start sampling Sukij’s wonderful creations and say a hearty “CHEERS!” Full Moon Brew Work Micro-Brewery and Restaurant is located behind the Big Chinese Junk at Junceylon Shopping Centre. Life’s a Beach

W

ith a vast array of different beaches on Phuket’s coastline why stick to just the one nearest your hotel? Take a look here at the choices available.

Mai Khao Beach

North of the airport is a beach to really get away from it all. Mai Khao beach is very, very long, and very straight, so it misses the cozy feeling enjoyed by many of the other beaches on the island, but the sand and water here are just as stunning plus it’s almost empty! The place feels deserted even during high season when the beach umbrellas are five deep on Patong.

Nai Yang Beach

V

Laem Singh

isitors to Phuket often envisage going to small beaches hidden away in secret locations, and they do exist, although they are not all that secret anymore. Phuket has been a key tourist destination for many years so it is not surprising that almost every square inch of the island has already been explored, and if it is beautiful it becomes a commodity worth exploiting. There are however places that, although well trodden, still retain a magical charm about them and located just north of busy Patong there is a little cove that is a must visit for anyone coming on holiday to Phuket. Laem Singh beach is nestled down below the windy coastal road that takes you north of Patong beach towards the airport, it is not accessible by car or even motorbike, instead you must park at the top and carefully walk your way down the steep mountain that drops into the sea and this little effort is rewarded justly with a stunningly beautiful, charming little beach. Two headlands flank either side of the beach doing the dual duty of protecting you from the prevailing winds and providing a relaxed and sheltered bay for swimming. The beach itself is a mix of fine white sands and smooth rounded boulders, great for taking photos. As with most other beaches on Phuket there are a handful of white plastic deck-chairs (unavoidable I am afraid!) available for rent and it is advisable that you take up the opportunity because this is a beach that is worthy of a day long stay, so being comfortable is paramount. Snacks and fresh cut fruit are available from the beach sellers but here it is more of a convenience than an annoyance, and tastes all the sweeter for it! To get to Laem Singh beach you can either venture there yourself by car or motorbike, just follow the beach road north out of Patong and not long after you will start to see the signs for the beach, car parking is limited however and therefore you are ‘required’ to pay for the luxury. The other option is to take a tuktuk and arrange a pickup time later on it the day. However you get there, you will be a lot more reluctant to leave.

www.theguidephuket.com

Just south of the airport is Nai Yang, a charming beach with a unique atmosphere all of its own. With just a scattering of hotels and bars to entertain the few that stay there, Nai Yang is as relaxed as they get. Ever dreamed of eating seafood right on the beach? This is your spot.

Nai Thon Beach

A little further south from Nai Yang is Nai Thon, possessing a similar feel to its big brother, Nai Thon has long been a favorite with the regular visitors to the island. This quiet bay nestled at the foot of high hills has a fine strip of sand and a handful of pleasant eateries are situated just off the beach.

Layan Beach

This is a small and relatively unknown beach, nestled in a shallow bay at the northern end of Bang Tao. You get there by following the small road that winds right through the back holes of the Banyan Tree Golf Club. Layan Beach is more of a bay than a beach, and although very picturesque the water is quite shallow; great for families but if you fancy a real swim it’s not the place to go.

Bang Tao Beach

Bang Tao Beach has in recent years seen a lot of development with many 5-star luxury resorts in the area but the beach remains very pleasant. At certain times of the year swimming can be dangerous due to the strong tides. At the northern end of the beach the coral creates good opportunities for snorkeling.

Surin Beach

Surin Beach is located between Bang Tao and Kamala beach. It is one of most beautiful beaches on the island with fine white sand and emerald sea. The beach can have rather strong winds which make it ideal for windsurfing. A lot of popular resorts surround this beach.

Kamala Beach

Kamala is a 3-kilometer long beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast which has undergone recent developments to its main street, but the beach remains largely unchanged. Behind the beach lies a growing village with two distinct communities; Buddhists by the beach and Muslims further back at the foot of the encompassing mountain range.

Patong Beach

The most famous beach on the island is the center of entertainment, restaurants, shopping and hotels.

Lifestyle / 17 Patong is indeed a famous beach with beautiful soft sands and warm clear water. But right behind the beach is the hustle and bustle at the center of Phuket’s tourism business. Here the hotels, restaurants, entertainment and bar areas, street bazaars and shops are crammed in a colorful and lively mix that typifies a Thai tourist beach town.

snorkeling as many fish inhabit the rocks and corals along the headland to the south.

Paradise Beach is a little beach just 5 minutes south of Patong. To get there follow a small cement road up to the hill through the jungle. It is a nice small beach with white, soft sand and large rocks flanking either side.

Nai Harn Beach

Ao Sane Beach

Paradise Beach

Ao Sane beach is a small bay and is located to the north of Nai Harn beach. To get to this beach you need to go through The Royal Phuket Yacht Club. Ao Sane is a very small, rocky beach but it is peaceful.

Karon Beach

Nai Harn is one of the more isolated beaches, nestled at the southern tip of the island in a bay defined by headlands and islets. The beach is backed by the green of Casuarina trees and coconut palms, acting as shade to the restaurants that now line the beach.

Karon is another of the beautiful, west-coast beaches that have made Phuket famous. This beach is the first main stop south of Patong, and is separated from Patong by a large headland. A quick 10 minute drive connects the two.

Kata Beach

Kata is certainly one of the most beautiful of Phuket’s beaches; a half-moon crescent of white sand lining a bay cut deep between two green headlands. Crystal clear waters and soft coral offers excellent snorkeling and just outside the bay lies a small rounded island that seems to wave its coconut haircut to those on the beach.

Kata Noi Beach

Just south of Kata Beach is Kata Noi, a smaller beach with only a few hotels and little other development. The beach is superb for

Yanui Beach

Yanui Beach is a small bay, 10 minutes north from Leam Phrom Thep. It offers kayaking and snorkeling with equipment hire, both off the beach itself and around the small island about 500 meters distant. The beach is not so long and the sand is beautifully soft and rarely crowded. It is also a favorite bathing and sunbathing location.

Ao Yon Beach

Ao Yon is another peaceful beach ideally suited for watching the sunset. It is located near Cape Panwa, 10km from Phuket Town. Although quiet with beautiful emerald sea this beach is not really suitable for bathing or relaxing as the bay is usually full of boats and yachts.

Brunch Review

Trisara Sunday Brunch

T

hat temple to all things elegant and tasteful, Trisara Resort and Spa on Phuket’s north-western Nai Thon Beach, has come up trumps once again with their recent opening of Phuket’s most luxurious Sunday Brunch. Eschewing the “gorge-yourself-to-astandstill” mentality of some other island brunches Trisara offers six extremely tasteful (pun intended) food stations, each of which focuses on supreme quality. Start with a perfectly prepared Caesar Salad, segue into an array of delightful tapas style treats and then sample some of the

freshest cold water oysters, giant prawns and lobster tails you’ll find in Southern Thailand. Then move on perhaps to the Australian beef or Salmon Wellington, but pace yourself because the hand- made desserts, pastries and the following cheese and fruit selection are a sensational climax and you really do want to leave “tummy space” to do them justice! Take time and relax… brunch here is meant to be a drawn-out leisurely affair as the jazz combo lays down cool sounds and you watch the waves break upon the perfect

sands below. Seating is discreet and well spaced, so that every couple or group feels relaxed and pampered, whether in the sala or on the open-air deck. All the while you will be complementing the gustatory parade with chilled glasses of Louis Roederer champers, or your chosen selection from the wine cellar. It’s hardly surprising that by 4pm most of the diners are still enjoying the day and reluctant to go home. Sunday brunch: 11.30am-4pm. Baht 3,800++ per person including a bottle of Louis Roederer Champagne Brut for two, or Baht 2,900++ per person including a bottle of your choice of sparkling, white, rose or red wine for two. In the Kitchen with...

Food Adventure Restaurant

A good place to start your exploration of the wilder side of gourmandizing is the “Food Adventure mixed sampler plate” which features cod, crispy ostrich balls and crocodile along with a salad and various dipping sauces. www.theguidephuket.com

“I’ll Have the Crocodile… and Make it Snappy!”

Y

ou know that feeling you sometimes get when you are wandering through the Junceylon Center…the one that says, “I really fancy a nice plate of crocodile, stag, ostrich, or wild boar?” Well now, you don’t have to be frustrated in your quest for exotic food any longer, because since August 2010 an unusual new restaurant called “Food Adventure” has sprung up catering to exactly such serendipitous tastes. The brain child of long term Phuket resident Pascal Taillard, Food Adventure is a somewhat eccentric eatery which features a broad range of delicious cuisines from all over the globe, as well as the more exotic dishes for which it is named. The green and gold awning close to the Rat-U-Thit Road end of the Junceylon Center beckons you into its air conditioned interior burgeoning with green plants and shrubs, with a huge frieze of workers toiling in wild fields painted upon its rear wall. Alternatively you can sit outdoors on the restaurant’s front terrace and watch the always-fascinating passing parade of Patong’s human exotica. The menu itself offers an eclectic and wide ranging choice of food that is both tasty and healthy and is drawn from all over the world. There are many exciting starters such as wild boar terrine, beef and red tuna Carpaccio, deep fried cod balls, Tahitian style raw fish salad, or Earth and Sea salad featuring cod and goat’s cheese.

Food & Restaurants / 25 Then there’s an abundance of rice and pasta dishes, a classic Thai menu with all the local favorites as well as a special northeastern Thai Issan menu. There’s a charcoal grill brimming with tuna steaks, great Australian beef cuts, or New Zealand lamb chops all served with a choice of various sauces plus potatoes egg plant puree, zucchini cake and side orders ranging from fries, to rice and salads. Other main courses cover such favorites from duck leg, to cod Teriyaki, to Bacalahau meat, poultry and seafood all with deliciously complementary salads and it’s important to leave stomach space for something from the delicious dessert menu which includes chocolate and banana spring rolls, warm apple tart and iced honey nougat. However for most diners it is the “exotic menu” of crocodile, ostrich, stag and wild boar that sets this fine restaurant apart from the abundance of ordinary, run-of-the-mill eateries that are dotted around Patong. A good place to start your exploration of the wilder side of gourmandizing is the “Food Adventure mixed sampler plate” which features cod, crispy ostrich balls and crocodile along with a salad and various dipping sauces. If you are intrigued by this excellent entrée into the wonderful world of exotic food, you could graduate to a fine, fat free cut of Ostrich tenderloin, or the Ostrich Bobotie with raisins and almonds. Then there’s the eccentric crocodile skewer with honey lime and ginger, not to mention wild stag civet stew with deep red wine. All of the prices at Food Adventure are exceptionally reasonable and happy hour wines by the glass from 6pm to 8pm are only 80 baht, or there’s the all day deal of just 300 baht for a generous 500 centiliter carafe. The wine selection embraces Spanish, Chilean and South African choices, not to mention appropriately enough an Aussie bottle named “Laughing Lizard”. And it was after rather a large number of glasses of this fine beverage that one diner was heard asking for a plate of the crocodile and please make it snappy! Oh well, at a restaurant like Food Adventure it had to happen I suppose!

Preparation For stuffing Heat the wok and add a little oil. Add coriander root, garlic and pepper. Stir fry until an aroma develops. Then add minced chicken and keep stirring and be careful not to let it become lumpy. When the chicken is cooked, add the sliced onion and season with sugar and salt. For dough Mix the 4 kinds of flours together and add half of the colored water and mix them together with the remaining water. On low heat, slowly stir the mixed flour until almost cooked. Gently knead the warm dough and set aside. Dust it with a little flour and cover with a piece of damp cloth to keep it moist. Divide mixed dough into round balls of ping pong ball size and set aside. Make a dent in the middle of each ball for placing the cooked stuffing in it. Fold the dough together into a round shape again. With a pair of tweezers, carve the outside of the dough into layers like flower petals. Steamed the flower-shaped dumplings for 10 minutes. Transfer to a serving dish. 7 Things you can do to make your golf swing pain free!

B

y far the number one cause of low back pain in golfers is caused by excessive rotation of the spine or big turn while holding a stationary hip position at the top of the backswing. This swing habit has been taught to many golfers on the false belief that it engages the “big” muscles of the back creating a sling shot effect for more head club speed and ball distance. This belief is a myth and causes significant back stress especially during the top of the backswing and during hyperextension in the downswing and follow through. Current research has demonstrated that a short backswing achieves the same club speed at ball impact as long backswings. Secondly, the low back muscles only provide 5% of torque, whereas the oblique stomach muscles do most of the work. The truth is that most of the power during the swing comes from exerting a short quick stretch to the muscles that surround the shoulder joint during backswing without the help of any spinal rotation. The only purpose for pelvic and spinal rotation in the backswing is to achieve a body position that allows for effective club head delivery at ball impact.

To protect your back, here are three good reasons why you need to a short golf swing.

1. More ball control that leads to greater accuracy without the shanks or hooks 2. Ball distance that’s equivalent in length to the big shoulder turn 3. Minimal pressure on the back decreasing the likelihood of injury

How do you change what you’re doing?

1. Correct posture at ball address is critical for initiating the proper swing plane with the least amount of stress on the spinal joints. 2. Engage professional golf swing analysis to help indentify hazardous movements especially over-rotation with fixed hips putting undue stress on your spine and extremity joints. 3. Change your swing to a shorter, compact one. This means you need to work on keeping your shoulders and hips as parallel to each other a possible throughout the majority of the swing. This requires stretching the muscles around your hips and back sufficiently to acquire a level of synchronicity to achieve parallel movement. 4. Dedication to a core strength conditioning program to strengthen the stomach and back muscles to help protect the spine during the swing. 5. To minimize injury, perform a three part warm up before playing, consisting of a heart raiser to get you pulse up, a series of static stretches and then a further series of dynamic stretches (stretches done whilst moving)

6. Proper equipment is an important key in preventing injury. A club too long or short, too stiff or flexible or too many different makes of clubs in your bag can result in frequent alterations of posture at ball address and inconsistent tempo. It’s very important to see a fitting specialist. 7. Stay energized through frequent hydration and energy snacks. Fatigue causes injuries because it becomes more difficult for the body to protect itself. Stopping an activity at the first sign of fatigue can prevent sports related injuries.

How can chiropractic care help golfers?

The primary treatment I perform is manipulation to those areas of the spine or surrounding joints which are slightly displaced and fail to function normally. Given by hand (the word chiropractic means “done by hand”) the adjustment will restore proper alignment and function to the spinal joints, thereby restoring the normal nerve transmission and healing potential to the vital structures of the body. Typically after the adjustment one experiences a feeling of wellbeing and calmness. Others may feel increased mobility. However, the beauty of Chiropractic is not only drug-free and surgery free care, but also preventative and performance enhancing care. Maintaining proper alignment allows athletes to be prepared for their sport. So if you’re open to discussing your injury problem or health issue, then let’s sit down and talk. I want to help. Steps to massage heaven

A

holiday in Phuket is not complete without at least one massage. An hour of physical release can be an invigorating experience after a night out, a blissful cool down for a sunburned body, a relaxing treat for stressed-out workaholics or a deep and intense attempt to deal with sports injuries or aches and pains. Whatever your reason for delving into the world of massage – on Phuket there is a treatment for you. On the island’s beaches you can be pummeled, in tropical gardens you can be pampered and in cool salas you can fall asleep to lilting music and soft hands. Heaven is only a pressure point away on Phuket – but be warned, this is an addictive experience and can take over your entire holiday. Sightseeing tours and island adventures cancelled for the lure of soothing hands and sleepy caresses. The traditional Thai massage dates back to ancient India, even before the lifetime of the Lord Buddha. It has been practiced in Thailand for hundreds of years and many

Hattakarn Spa, The Residence Resort & Spa Retreat

Thai people believe it cures common ailments such as aches and pains, fevers and even nervous dispositions. Contrary to popular belief, clothes should stay on during Thai massage. The technique is about manipulating the energy which travels through your body and this can be done through loose, comfortable clothing.

One of the best ways to experience an authentic Thai massage is to head down to one of the island’s beaches and answer the call of the massage ladies that lie beneath their bamboo shacks. Good beach massages can be found all around the island. Some resorts have staff working for them and other times the massage ladies are freelance. Whatever the deal you can be sure that you will be usually massaged by someone with plenty of practice. It isn’t usually a gentle experience. These ladies are often from the old school of Thai massage and grin and cackle as your joints crack in protest and you let out inadvertent squeals of pain. They will push and pull, poke and prod and throw you about with unexpected strength before jumping energetically on your back and making you wish the ground would open up and swallow you – or her. However, after the torture is over, a sense of well-being

Health & Beauty / 35 quietly settles in and your body feels a lot more relaxed – and healthy.

Go local

A step up from beach massage is to visit the small massage shops found on every street. These usually specialize in reflexology, easily recognized from the foot diagram prominently displayed outside. Inside they range in ambiance from fluorescent lights and plastic furniture to Thai silk furnishings and trickling water features. But they all have comfortable recliners for foot massages and softly spoken massage therapists. What you get here is usually a ‘by rote’ experience. In other words, they aren’t going to identify problems or focus on particular areas but will still leave you feeling relaxed and well prodded. There will also be curtained-off areas with thin mattresses for oil or Thai massages in private.

Get physical

Thai massage schools aren’t that plentiful on Phuket. These places offer skilled therapists (you can tell as they all

wear a uniform) who probably trained at Wat Po, the premier massage school in Bangkok, and these guys can deal with specific injuries and other health complaints. However, it is generally a good idea to point out particular problems to focus on before you begin.

Focus your mind

Day spas can usually be found near the beach or in the mountains. Many focus on health massages, which are often combined with steam or herbal compresses and other health treatments. Here you will be expected to take your massage treatment very seriously – frivolity not encouraged. If you aren’t looking for health benefits so much as pure and utter indulgence then head to a resort spa.

Ultimate Indulgence

Spas found in resorts offer the ultimate in luxurious extravagance. Many

offer packages of five hours or longer and leave you in a state of tranquility. These massages are generally more about relaxation than health and usually take place in peaceful (but manufactured) surroundings. They often have a bath or Jacuzzi and also offer facials, Indian head massages and body wraps. Everything from chocolate to sesame seeds and mud will be smeared over you as the spas fight to provide more and more temptations. However, the basic aromatherapy massages are always a treat and are usually very well administered.

T

here are scores of alternative tours on offer in Phuket: boat trips; pristine tropical islands; sunset cruises; ecotours; jungle trekking, elephant rides etc. We consider only a small number of these to be quality experiences. Price is not the only factor, though generally you do get what you pay for: buy the cheapest tour and you can expect to spend the day with a crowd of other tourists seeking the cheapest way.

Phang Nga Bay Day Trips (or James Bond Island)

Join Our Luxury Day Cruises Availability Every Monday and Thursday

No visit to Phuket would be really complete if one never got to see and wonder at the geographic grandeur of Phang Nga Bay. Every visitor, surely, must have seen photos of Phuket’s neighbouring bay of gigantic rock mountains rising vertically from calm, olivegreen waters even before getting here. The sight of Phang Nga is dramatic, and being surrounded by these towering rocky monoliths is surely one of the highlights of a visit to Phuket. We strongly recommend a visit here.

Koh Pannyi – also in Phang Nga Bay (or Sea Gypsy village)

09:30 Transfer from Twinpalms Phuket to Ao Po Grand Marina. 10:15 Board the yacht for your cruise to Kai Nok Island. Welcome drink is served. 11:45 Arrive at Kai Nok Island. Enjoy a swim and water sports in the exquisite turquoise waters. 13:00 A sumptuous buffet lunch is served on board. 14:15 Cruise to Rang Yai Island for a refreshing swim and snorkel amidst colorful marine life. Or simply relax in the well-appointed saloon or worship the sun on the spacious deck. 16.30 Arrive to Ao Po Marina 17:15 Return back to your hotel. For bookings call Andaman Cruises +66 (0)85 2214572 www.andaman-cruises.com www.theguidephuket.com

Following the visit to crowded James Bond the cheaper tours shepherd their clients to Koh Pannyi island, the stilted water village seen in so many postcards. Often given the tourist name of Sea Gypsy village, it is in fact a community of Muslim fishermen, not sea gypsies. This village is indeed fascinating. It’s a pity about the tourist crowds; all tours companies arrive here at the same time for lunch, bringing up to 2-3,000 people every day. Although worth a visit, there are better ways to get to Pannyi than by mass tourism.

Boat cruises to Phang Nga The boat tours to Phang Nga Bay – the kind that leave from Phuket Island - usually cruise past the James Bond commotion without stopping, continuing their quiet journey through the bay of mountains. This is by far

Sea Kayaking Many visitors consider a canoeing trip into the ‘hongs’, the hidden caves of Phang Nga, the highlight of their visit to Phuket. This mystical world of collapsed caves connected to the sea by dark tunnels has been eroded from the limestone mountains over time by the rise and fall of the sea. Numerous companies have sprung up, and it is worth looking around to avoid the cheap quickies. Sign up with one of the well-established companies, or with original company that discovered the hongs and began it all, Sea Canoe. This can be an unforgettable trip well worth the time and money.

Renting your own speedboat Interestingly, most of the beautiful images of tranquil little islands and fabulously clear waters are taken on the outlying islands, not on Phuket itself. The only way to get to these islands is by renting a boat, and since there are few regular services your only option is to privately hire a speedboat for the day, although this is expensive it will provide you with memories to last a lifetime.

Renting Traditional Longtail Boats

If one wants a cheaper route, while taking in a cultural experience, rent a traditional, wooden ‘longtail’ boat. These are slower, but are also fun. Longtails are available on most of the major west coast beaches, or at the north end of Kata where they shelter at night. They are also available – at much better prices – from the boat pier at Chalong, or on the beach at Rawai, right at the southern tip of the island.

40 / Watersports & Activities

Water Activity Diving Liveaboards Enthusiasts come from around the world for these liveaboards. Some run for up to 10 days and visit neighbouring countries, usually Burma. Most divers book these trips well in advance, but those with time and flexibility can book a number of trips right here. The Similan Islands, 90 kilometers Northwest of Phuket, is the most common liveaboard destination. In good conditions the water visibility here can be astounding, though it’s generally in the range of 20-30 meters which is still excellent. The Andaman Sea is generally quite calm, making diving here easy and pleasurable.

Diving in Phuket

Learning to Dive

Phuket, and its surrounding Andaman Sea, have gained international reputation as one of the world’s top diving destinations. The Similan Islands in particular, are frequently ranked among the world’s top ten. Several advantages make this region one of the best for both learners and experienced divers. For learners there is worldclass instruction at economical prices, and an abundance of aquatic life inhabit these warm and comfortable waters. If you’re scared of sharks, don’t be, any of the graceful specimens found here are harmless and relatively rare. Whale sharks, the biggest fish in the ocean at over 10 meters long, are at the other end of this equation, being more common here than in any other part of the world. Experienced divers the world over migrate to the Similan Islands knowing they have a near certainty of swimming with whale sharks. While large fish are not so common in Phuket’s waters, the variety of corals, both soft and hard, is striking. But perhaps most important for all divers, warm water and year-round clarity makes this a great place to be down with the fishes.

There are any number of places to learn to dive on Phuket. Just look for any 5 star PADI facility. A dive course will usually take 3 or 4 days, starting in the classroom, then moving to the swimming pool and finally the open ocean. The result is a diving certificate recognised around the world, as well as a lot of fun and new experience.

www.theguidephuket.com

Diving Day Trips For those who already have their diving certificate, a good range of day trips is available. A variety of diving destinations include the two Racha islands south of Phuket, several pinnacles in the direction of Phi Phi, and one large wreck of a car ferry that sank in a 30 metre location in the lower Bay.

Fishing With so much water out there, there has to be fish, right? And of course there are fish out there – big fish, fighting fish, the sailfish. It’s Phuket’s one boast to fishing fame – there are few places in the world where one can catch sailfish so regularly. Boats invariably head to the Racha islands south of Phuket where deep, clear waters attract the sailfish and their prey. At certain times of year thousands of sailfish congregate in very small areas, constantly leaping out of the water to land on their

Watersports & Activities / 41 sides with the biggest splash – rounding up schools of smaller bait fish. Even when one can’t catch them, the very sight of so many huge, leaping fish is a worthwhile spectacle. Though they can be caught all year round, the monsoon season is particularly good. A wide variety of other fish are also plentiful including small tunas, Spanish mackerel, wahoo, dolphin-fish, barracuda. Bottom fishing can give an even greater variety in the catch. There are few sharks left in these waters. Some dedicated souls make the hourslong pilgrimage out to the continental shelf drop off, where the water suddenly drops to hundreds meters, and where, it is said, huge marlin rule the depths.

Shopper’s Delight Thai Silk

Long one of Thailand’s most famous products, silk weaving is still one of the major crafts in many rural areas. The variety of materials available in Phuket is wide and varies both in design, from the traditional to modern to plain colors, and quality; 2-ply is thin and light, 3-ply or more becomes heavier and more expensive. Tailors, jewelry and souvenir shops in all areas carry silk. Many shops will tailor modern dresses or shorts from silk at a fraction of the price you would pay back home.

Ceramics

The two major centers for ceramic production are the well-known Chiang Mai, and Ratburi west of Bangkok. They produce an amazing range of wares from very traditional Thai and even Chinese tableware and decorative items to modern home decor items, the biggest of which you’ll need a truck to move. Some of these more modern items are creative and interesting. There is a fair range spread around the island, but you’ll have to drive and hunt to find it all.

Woodcarving

Most of this comes from the craft centers of Chiang Mai and again Thai

skills show through in a great variety of items that can be both novel and creative or entirely traditional. Buddha images are one of the standards, but you can find figurines of all kinds and many other offbeat items for home decoration. Thailand makes some great teak furniture, though only a little is available in Phuket.

Antiques

Beware if you’re looking for genuine antiques as this is one real danger zone in Thailand. Read the passage below on Instant Antiques carefully; and remember that most genuinely old pieces of traditional Thai art, including Buddha images, require permits to be taken from the country.

Instant Antiques

This sounds like a contradiction, but this is now a thriving new industry in Thailand that arose in response to the overwhelming demand for beautiful old things and the short supply. Originally, cunning entrepreneurs crafted and carefully ‘aged’ wood, bronze and stone artworks to sell off as genuine antiques. But they produced such beautiful things that demand grew, and the industry came out into the open. Today whole villages of skilled workers produce beautiful objects of art that appear ancient, but which are sold cheaply as ‘reproductions’. This makes ‘antiques’ available to everyone and takes the pressure off the genuinely old things. Best of all, virtually no-one can tell the difference between the real thing and the reproduction that you place in your home.

Custom Tailoring

This is definitely bargain country in Phuket. Tailors can import their wares easily to Phuket and their overhead costs are low. Skills range from excel-

lent to barely adequate, so look carefully and you can go home with both quality and real savings. It is important to start with a tailor early in your visit because at least two visits will be required, and those who are a little more finicky should plan on three visits to get things just right. Allow two or three days between each visit. The Guide Phuket recommends: Mister Singh’s Fashion Gallery, Patong Beach, www.fashiongallery.com. James Fashion House, Karon Beach, www.jamesfashionhouse.com.

Central Festival Phuket Phuket Town

With over 120,000 square meters bursting with prime shopping opportunities and world-class products it is easy to see why this consummate one-stop shopping and entertainment complex is so popular amongst Phuket residents and visitors. With a large selection of shops, restaurants, coffee shops, plus a supermarket and cinemas you can enjoy the largest, most complete shopping and entertainment complex in southern Thailand.

Jungceylon - Patong Beach

Located centrally in Patong Beach is the newest addition to the growing trend of shopping malls in Phuket. ‘Jungceylon‘ was the old name for Phuket when it was still a prosperous port town and trading in the region was at its peak. This shopping mall retains a lot of the old history of Phuket in its architecture and style and is a joy to visit for this alone. The choice of goods is world-class, comprising well over 300 shops with ample car parking space, restaurants, bars, cinema and bowling alley along with everything else you could possibly need for a busy day shopping.

The Dream Gallery, Chinese Antique Studio

Four things that make James Fashion House Phuket’s leading custom tailor and top provider of elegant - yet affordable suits and other clothes for men, women and even children.

Chinese antiques are becoming more and more fashionable but it can be difficult to find original and interesting pieces. The Dream Chinese Antique Studio was the result of, you guessed it, a dream in which the owner was summoned to come to Phuket by Buddha. Sounds a bit far fetched but it is a true story and the owner, already being a long time collector and enthusiast of ancient Chinese ornaments, opened her gallery with a small collection at first which has now grown into such a diverse and interesting range of artifacts, trinkets and other paraphernalia, that there really is something for everyone. As you wander through the gallery you will be amazed at how beautiful some of the pieces are, almost deserving of being placed in a museum for posterity. Antique handmade cabinets, statues, traditional Chinese earthenware, metalwork and wall-hangings are all available. New items are added regularly, hand selected and imported directly from China. The Dream Gallery Chinese Antiques Studio is open from 9.30am – 6.30pm, closed on Mondays. Tel. +66 (0) 76 273 487 www.thedreamgallery.asia

ow much of Phuket have you actually seen? Wouldn’t you like to explore some more? Well, here we list some of your options for getting around the island’s highways and byways.

To and from the airport

Airport transfers are relatively simple. The airport is at the far north of the island, some 30 kilometers from Phuket Town and even further from most of the popular beaches like Patong and Karon. It is best to use one of the two official transport companies with booths right inside the arrival lounge, you can’t miss them. Private Airport Limousines or minibuses are available to get to the major beaches at the south or west of the island. Metered taxis are also available and are cheaper than the airport limousines, as are ‘private’ taxis but we suggest you avoid these since problems have been known to occur. The Airport Bus is a cheaper alternative as long as you are not in a rush. Ask at the airport for their current departure schedules and pricing. Car rental is available and companies, such as Budget and National have offices located in the airport.

Airlines in & out of Phuket

A multitude of airlines now run scheduled flights to and from Phuket and during high season chartered flights are also available. Budget airlines such as Air Asia, Nok Air and One-2-Go Air all run convenient and economical flights to other provinces throughout Thailand.

Song-taews

There are few buses on Phuket and the main form of transport from beach to town is the ‘song taew’; a truck www.theguidephuket.com

converted to carry passengers in the back on two long benches. They are usually colorful with a sign on front showing where they are going. These vehicles leave from a set stop by the fresh produce market in Phuket Town, reaching every major beach area on the island. They run approximately every hour but there are no fixed schedules, and they run when there are sufficient passengers. When leaving the beach areas to head back to town they usually cruise slowly around the streets picking up passengers. Song-taews are slow but cheap with the fare from Phuket town to Patong now set at just 25 THB per person!

‘Tuk-Tuks’

If you want your own private taxi, look for a tuk tuk, a tiny mini-truck converted in the manner of the bigger songtaews mentioned above to carry about four (or more!) passengers. The tuk-tuk gets its name from the noise its little engine makes. There are fleets of these in all major tourist areas and they will take you anywhere for a price. The going rate for the relatively short ride between Patong and Phuket town can be as much as 450 THB, one way! You can attempt to bargain but don’t expect much movement on their prices and be aware that at night the price of tuk-tuks shoots up. You can also rent one of these tuktuks for the day. Expect to pay around 2,000 THB or more. This can be a good way to get about the island if you prefer not to drive yourself.

Motorcycle Taxis

These will be a new experience for many people and are a convenient, yet nerve wracking, way to get around. All fares must be negotiated before the ride. These taxi motor cycle drivers are eas-

ily identified by their special colored jackets showing the location of their home base. Many have the word ‘taxi’ written in English on this jacket. Do not take a taxi from anyone who is not wearing one of these jackets.

Renting a Motorcycle

Motorcycles, big and small, can be rented all over the island and are a popular choice for many tourists. Zipping around with the breeze in your hair is tempting for anyone but do be careful, the hospitals here see a never-ending stream of foreigners arriving with skin missing from arms and legs, or sometimes worse. The accident rate on Phuket is one of the highest in Thailand, with 90% of road accidents involving motorcycles! Note that Thai law requires the driver to carry a valid license at all times and all riders to wear helmets – even though most Thais (including the police!) ignore the regulations. Also motor cycle lights must be turned on at all times, including during the daytime! The police occasionally enforce all these laws, so beware. The real danger in Phuket is this: NONE of the motorcycles rented here have insurance. If you rent one and cause damage you will be held fully responsible, with some greedy owners charging significantly more than the real cost of the damage. Be extremely cautious!

Renting Your Own Car

Since Phuket is quite a large island, renting your own car can be one of the most pleasant ways to get around and it gives you freedom to go where and when you want. Renting is easy; private rental cars are readily found in every beach area and major rental companies operate in most resorts. When renting private vehicles from the side of the road be aware that few of these vehicles have insurance and this can prove disastrous in the event of an accident. Renting a car allows you get off the island and see the beautiful, neighboring provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi. The

Regional Buses

The long distance bus station is in Phuket Town is directly across from the Royal City Hotel. From here both air-con tour buses and cheap, ‘orange crush’ buses leave for destinations north, south and east. There are regular services to Bangkok, Krabi, Surat Thani, Nakorn Srithammarat, Trang, Haad Yai and other minor provincial capitals. Most of the tour buses to Bangkok leave around 5pm arriving in Bangkok about 6am the following morning. Tickets can be purchased either at the bus station or through travel agents.

Transport by Boat

Regular ferry boat services from Phuket run only to the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Yao Noi and Krabi. There are unscheduled boats to Koh Bon, Racha Yai and Koh Yao Yai. You can get to Koh Lanta by changing boats at Koh Phi Phi. Most people get to the other smaller

islands by renting their own speed boats or even by chartering yachts. Whatever your chosen mode of trans-

port may be, enjoy exploring the island, there is plenty to see and do, more than you might have realized. Happy hunting! www.facebook.com/theguidephuket
