Close-up Phuket

The Pearl of the Andaman

P

huket; sun, sand, and sea, but Phuket has so much more to offer. Located approximately 862 kilometers south of Bangkok is Phuket, Thailand’s largest island, which is often dubbed as the pearl of the Andaman, or the pearl of the south. Its natural resources; a rocky peninsular, limestone cliffs, white powdery beaches, tranquil open bays and tropical inland forests contribute towords making it the southern Thailand’s busiest, and most popular island and province. Phuket borders with Phang-nga province to the north; connected by the Sarasin Bridge . The remaining coastline is encircled by the Andaman Sea; an area that is home to some of the best scuba diving sites in the region. Phuket’s topography is exceptional with 70 percent of the island covered with mountains which stretch from north to south and the remaining 30 percent being plains located in the central and eastern parts of the island. The island does not have any major rivers but does have a network of streams, brooks and creeks. There are only two seasons in the year; the rainy season (May to October) and the hot season (November to April). The main low season of Phuket is September and October as they are the wettest months. The best period for a visit, is from November through till February, when it is possible to see clear blue skies, feel the fresh sea breeze and marvel at the crystal clear water while lying on powdery, palm-fringed beaches. Average temperatures ranges between 23°C and 33°C. Phuket has a lot more to offer than just it’s pristine beaches and world class diving. Both history and culture are to be found; Sino-Portuguese architecture from the age of tin mining casts its spell delighting travelers to the old city, while Phuket-style hospitality has never failed to impress visitors from all walks of life. In addition, accommodation ranging from world-class resorts to tropical-style bungalows warmly cater to the different needs of travelers. For seafood lovers, there is a lot more to sample than just Phuket’s famous lobster. Altogether, these characteristics have made Phuket a truly unique destination. Enjoy your stay !

Getting to Know...

Bhuritt Maswongssa

Vice President of Marketing for the Phuket Tourist Association What is your main role as VP Marketing for the Phuket Tourist Association?

Khun Bhuritt Maswongssa is the highly articulate Vice President for Marketing of the Phuket Tourist Association. We caught up with him at the Patong Resort Hotel, where he is also the long standing Deputy General Manager.

traffic congestion, tourist rip offs and so on and our costs continue to rise, potential visitors will vote with their feet and take their holidays elsewhere. We need to put in place strong government and private sector bodies which have the mandate to control and regulate the way in which tourist developments occurs. They need to be well-funded and have the “teeth” to actually make policy really work. But at present I can see little will-power to do this. It is not a particularly encouraging situation.

My responsibility lies in promoting Phuket as a tourism destination worldwide driving maximum arrivals and the resulting revenue that is derived from tourism. Our activities are funded by Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization via the hotel room tax levy on all stays in Phuket and so I have direct responsibility to use this budget to maximum effect in benefitting all the members of our Association. At present we are concentrating mainly on road shows to boost familiarity of Phuket and communicate three vital principles which we call the three “S’s”…. namely Safety & Security; Sanitary and Satisfactory.

What are the emerging tourism trends for this high season in Phuket?

Clearly we live in a very volatile world in which both man-made and natural impacts on societies and economies, and therefore tourism, are occurring dramatically and rapidly all over the globe. As a result long haul arrivals into Phuket from Europe and the USA are down, but have been more than replaced by emerging shorter haul markets particularly those of emerging Asia; Russia and the Middle East. Obviously the impact of the current turmoil in the Middle East is yet to be felt and of course there is already an ongoing impact on oil prices and corresponding fuel surcharges. Shorter haul visitors are tending to stay for shorter time periods….we are currently averaging 2.8 to 3.5 days per visitor, whereas the average for European longhaul visitors was 6 to 7 days. However, forward bookings suggest that we will see a continuation of the “high” season later into the year in 2011, at least until the end of April and maybe beyond.

How has Thailand’s political situation effected Phuket?

We are also seeing a tightening of “yield” from the tourists who are coming. Generally visitors are much more costconscious and while numbers are good, many fist time visitors have been spurred to come as a result of the explosion in ”low cost carrier” air connections to the island.

What does the future hold for Phuket’s tourism industry?

Clearly higher numbers of tourist arrivals mean more environmental, cultural and social impacts and this will not bode well for future sustainability unless these impacts are effectively managed. The problem we have at present is that most in the industry have a very short term attitude and are only concerned about survival and profitability right now, rather than longer term sustainability. There are many new directly competitive and good value Asia destinations to Phuket coming on stream in Cambodia, Myanmar and Vietnam. If Phuket’s appeal declines through environmental damage,

In many ways Phuket is being seen as almost a separate country to the rest of Thailand, where abundant direct air links mean that Bangkok can be avoided and the island accessed all the quicker without the need for stop-overs. We have a high rate of returning visitors, as well as friends and families of residents etc and so many visitors know the geography of Thailand very well and they realize that Phuket has not been tainted by the political protests. These factors have certainly helped insulate Phuket from the main impact of political turmoil in the capital and the north of the country.

Where would you like to see the improvements in Phuket for tourists?

I would love to see the infrastructure in Phuket vastly improved to provide greater convenience for tourists such as wider footpaths for tourist to walk without fear of traffic, the fairness of pricing for transportation and green areas or parks, I mean the real park for tourist relaxation and so on. These could bring up the standard of Phuket’s tourism industry and increase Phuket’s longevity as a dream destination for the world tourism market. www.facebook.com/theguidephuket

PATONG

Margarita; With live music every night this open air bar creates a great atmosphere located at the top of Bangla Road. For enthusiasts of live music performed with an Irish flavour, Patong offers a few lively Irish pub options. Scruffy Murphy’s on Soi Bangla is the place for chilled Guinness, good pub food and nightly live music. If you are on Beach Road head over to Molly Malone’s has a similar offering with outside seating. The new night life just opening in November is the trendy Factory Bar on Soi Bangla. With a chic industrial theme, a huge bar, great cocktails and cool sounds ranging from R&B to House to Techno, this is THE latest place to see and be seen.

PHUKET TOWN

Rockin’ Angels Bar is a must for both lovers of live music and for performers who would like to jam along. The Singaporean owner is a guitarist and singer and an allround nice guy. From the Rassada Road traffic circle head up Yaowarat Road and the bar is on the left-hand side.

Ka Jok See is a Phuket Town institution and one of the most successful restaurants on the island. It’s a great place for a candlelit romantic dinner or a boisterous night out, as later in the evening the owner Khun Lek starts playing hot music which turns Ka Jok See into a huge party, with even dancing on the tables!

SURIN BEACH

Situated along the north end of Surin Beach, Catch Beach Club is a fashionable eatery with cool music, a chic outdoor cocktail bar and a wonderful seafood buffet. Catch often features international musicians performing their own compositions, plus visiting DJ’s and regularly throws some of the island’s most amazing parties full of beautiful people. Stereo Beach Club and Lounge is at the southern end of Surin and has recently joined forces with the famous IndoChine group to launch one of the hippest late night spots on Phuket. It usually gets busier later in the evening but is also a great place to go for an early evening drink and to catch the sunset. The décor is outstand-

KARON & KATA

Coming up from Karon Beach and the traffic circle, take the first soi on the left and you’ll fund a veritable warren of fun bars. The Terrace Bar is an upstairs bar on the corner and is a great people-watching spot. On the opposite side there is a handful of bars serving good priced drinks, chaotic music, friendly hostesses and good humour. For a quieter pint try Angus O’Toole’s Irish pub on the left at the end of the soi, serving international beers and all-day pub food. There’s no ear-splitting music, but they show all the sports on the huge screens, have the day’s newspapers and offer and a genuine cozy pub atmosphere. The Ska Bar at the southern end of Kata Beach is built on huge granite boulders and has an outstanding view along the sand and out to sea. Here you can enjoy the cool reggae flavor, with friendly dreadlocked staff and terrific inexpensive cocktails.

y certifying ‘qualified’ hotels as ‘true beachfront’, and giving visitors detailed proof of their absolute on-thebeach locations, The Beachfront Club appears set to stir up hotels and booking patterns along the beaches of the world. The first-ever global authority on beachfront hotels has emerged, awarding ‘true beachfront’ qualifications to hotels that meet its stringent criteria: no roads or traffic between the hotel and the beach. This hi-tech newcomer, The Beachfront Club, has certified over 8,400 accommodations around the world as ‘true beachfront’, and expects about 10,000 will eventually be found and qualified. Kicking sand in the face of tradition and snob value, its membership includes properties ranging from budget to 5-star – just so long as they are right on the beach or oceanfront. To prove that its qualified hotels are genuinely on the beach, this on-line club has created almost 2,000 hi-tech beach maps that display its member hotels by their boundaries, illustrating the exact shape, size and position of each hotel in detail never seen before. Below these lie satellite images, providing additional verification of on-the-beach locations. The Beachfront Club will thus allow millions of users to find all absolute beachfront hotels with an easy-to-navigate tool which cuts out those which are not right on the beach – effectively drawing a line down the beaches. This is sure to create a windfall for the qualified hotels on the ‘right’ side of that line. The power of ‘true beachfront’ branding as a marketing tool is emphasised by the fact that, even before the website’s full public opening, hundreds of hotels have already signed in to claim their beachfront qualifications. These include beach resorts from many big name international chains, including Hyatt, Sheraton, Marriott, Le Meridien, Westin, Radisson, Barcelo, Renaissance and others. 18 / ITB Berlin

ITB Travel Trade Show, Berlin 9th - 13th March 2011 (Phuket Hall 26B)

Welcome from the Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation

Welcome from the Phuket Tourist Association

Dear Friends of Phuket,

Dear Participants of ITB 2011,

On behalf of the Phuket Provincial Administration Organization (PPAO) I am delighted to see the ongoing development of global tourism industry promoted through the ITB Trade Show here in Berlin; the world’s largest tourism trade show.

I am very pleased to see all the support from the members of Phuket Tourist Association and Thai Hotels Association (Southern Chapter) which are involved in ITB 2011. This support is one of the many reasons that tourism professionals and tourists alike see the potential of Phuket province as a world leading tourist destination.

In the last year the world has seen many problems that have affected tourism, thankfully disruption to Phuket’s tourism industry has been minimal and tourists continue to arrive and enjoy our world famous beaches, cutting edge hotels and our legendary service largely due to an overwhelming cooperation between both buyers and sellers within the private sector. With this continually increasing cooperation, together we will be able to create a positive and sustainable impact on Phuket’s tourism industry for the future. We at Phuket Provincial Administration Organization will continue to develop Phuket’s ability to serve in order to continue our reputation as being a world class destination capable of accommodating all the demands of the tourism industry. Finally, to all of Phuket’s business operators, from all of us here at ITB, we wish you every success for 2011.

It is great to see once again the high levels of cooperation between the private sectors and local government, especially The Phuket Provincial Administration Organization, who are always a major sponsor of various activities that encourage Phuket’s tourism industry. Last year’s tourism numbers were slightly lower than in previous years due to many factors affecting not just Phuket, but the whole world, however, this has not stopped the potential of Phuket, nor has is stopped the local business owners from providing their world class services, therefore at ITB this year, I expect to see just as much interest and as much success as always. If you have any questions or comments whilst at ITB regarding our operations or the tourism industry in Phuket we will be more than happy to help you.

Yours sincerely, Yours sincerely, Mr. Paiboon Upattising President of The Phuket Provincial Administrative Organization www.theguidephuket.com

Patong Beach S

ince its rise to fame in the late 1980s as a prime tourist destination, Patong Beach has seen a lot of change. Development has continued to increase the number of hotel, bars, shops and restaurants but, at heart, Patong has remained the same; a lively, accessible and fun place to spend your hard earned annual holiday. Patong has something for everyone be it singles, couples, families, old and young are all catered for here.

The Beach

You came for the beach and that what you get; 3.5 kilometres of it and although its not the most beautiful of sandy strips on Phuket, it certainly isn’t the worst and because of its sheer length you can find a quiet(er) spot even during the busiest time of the year. You’ll find it difficult to get bored on this beach, so when your latest John Grisham turns out to be a turkey there are still plenty of water activities to undertake, snacks to be eaten and massages to be had.

Restaurants

Thai, Japanese, Korean, Italian, French, German, Indian, Russian or Lebanese? Take your pick, almost all tastes are catered for here, some surprisingly good, some mediocre and some downright abysmal establishments have opened in recent years adding to the plethora of street stalls. And if all else fails there are also an increasing number of franchised fast-food outlets appearing. One thing is for sure, you wont be going hungry here!

Shops

Whether you are interested in some Thai trinkets for family back home, or designer labelled goods (be it real or otherwise!!) then you are spoilt for choice. The beach road gives you a huge range of stalls where bartering for the best price is a must, OTOP Plaza on the Rajuthit road (opposite the Holiday Inn) provides similar merchandise but on a larger scale, and Jung Ceylon shopping mall gives you the real fix that every shopaholic needs.

Nightlife

Patong is famous for it! More bar oriented than club oriented the choice now is quite broad. Bangla Road and Paradise complex are (dare I say it?) the ‘darker’ side to Patong nightlife, a handful of Irish bars are available if you are hankering for freshly pulled Guinness coupled with live music, the beach road hosts a scattering of more relaxed bars and there are a growing number of more glitzy upmarket ‘club’ style venues in, and just out of, Patong.

Getting around

There is is a lot to see in Patong but it is all within walking distance, if however you are feeling a little weary from a day sunning yourself, eating pineapple and sipping cocktails then taxis are available everywhere, either in the form of tuk-tuks or motorcycles just make you sure you agree a price beforehand, Getting to and from Patong is also very easy from anywhere on the island either by taxi or local bus. www.theguidephuket.com

Life’s a Beach

W

ith a vast array of different beaches on Phuket’s coastline why stick to just the one nearest your hotel? Take a look here at the choices available.

Mai Khao Beach

North of the airport is a beach to really get away from it all. Mai Khao beach is very, very long, and very straight, so it misses the cozy feeling enjoyed by many of the other beaches on the island, but the sand and water here are just as stunning and there is nobody here! The place feels deserted even during high season when the beach umbrellas are five deep on Patong.

Nai Yang Beach

Just south of the airport is Nai Yang, a charming beach with a unique atmosphere all of its own. With just a scattering of hotels and bars to entertain the few that stay there, Nai Yang is as relaxed as they get. Ever dreamed of eating seafood right on the beach? This is your spot.

Nai Thon Beach

A little further south from Nai Yang is Nai Thon, possessing a similar feel to its big brother, Nai Thon has long been a favourite with the regular visitors to the island. This quiet bay nestled at the foot of high hills has a fine strip of sand and a handful of pleasant eateries are situated just off the beach.

Layan Beach

This is a small and relatively unknown beach, nestled in a shallow bay at the northern end of Bang Tao. You get there by following the small road that winds right through the back holes of the Banyan Tree Golf Club. Layan Beach is more of a bay than a beach, and although very picturesque the water is quite shallow; great for families but if you fancy a real swim its not the place to go.

Lifestyle / 29 Bang Tao Beach

Surin Beach is located between Bang Tao and Kamala beach. It is one of most beautiful beaches on the island with fine white sand and emerald sea. The beach can have rather strong winds which make it ideal for windsurfing. A lot of popular resorts surround this beach.

Bang Tao Beach has, in recent years, seen a lot of development with many 5-star luxury resorts in the area but the beach remains very pleasant. At certain times of the year swimming can be dangerous due to the strong tides. At the northern end of the beach the coral creates good opportunities for snorkeling.

The BluEco Hotel is a harmonic and modern complex located in the heart of Kata Beach.

Laem Singh Beach

Laem Singh Beach is small and very popular; it is located between Surin and Kamala. To reach the beach you need to walk down a short, rocky trail that is clearly signposted. If you are lucky and it’s not too crowded then Leam Sing Beach is absolutely stunning.

Kamala Beach

Kamala, a 3-kilometre long beach situated in the middle of Phuket’s west coast, has undergone recent developments to the main street but the beach remains largely unchanged. Behind the beach lies a growing village with two distinct communities; Buddhists by the beach and Muslims further back at the foot of the encompassing mountain range.

Paradise Beach

We are the unique and outstanding holiday center which offering its guests the convenience and comfort with its green concept, and peaceful environment. The BluEco Hotel 100/75, Kata New Road, T. Karon, Muang, Phuket 83100 Tel. 076 333 315 Fax: 076 333 545 www.thebluecophuket.com

Ao Sane Beach

Paradise Beach is a little beach just 5 minutes south of Patong. To get there follow a small cement road up to the hill through the jungle. It is a nice small beach with white, soft sand and large rocks flanking either side of the beach.

Ao Sane beach is a small bay and is located to the right side of Nai Harn beach. To get to this beach you need to go through The Royal Phuket Yacht Club. Ao Sane is a very small, rocky beach but it is peaceful.

Karon Beach

Nai Harn Beach

Karon is another of the beautiful, west-coast beaches that have made Phuket famous. This beach is the first main stop south of Patong, and is separated from Patong by a large headland. A quick 10 minute drive connects the two.

Nai Harn is one of the more isolated beaches, nestled at the southern tip of the island in a bay defined by headlands and islets. The beach is backed by the green of casuarina trees and coconut palms, acting as shade to the restaurants that now line the beach.

Kata Beach

Yanui Beach

Kata is certainly one of the most beautiful of Phuket’s beaches; a half-moon crescent of white sand lining a bay cut deep between two green headlands. Crystal clear waters and soft coral allows for excellent snorkeling and just outside the bay lies a small rounded island that seems to wave its coconut haircut to those on the beach.

Kata Noi Beach

Just south of Kata Beach is Kata Noi, a smaller beach with only a few hotels and little other development. The beach is superb for snorkeling; many fish inhabit the rocks and corals along the beachless shoreline stretching south.

Yanui Beach is a small bay, 10 minutes north from Leam Phrom Thep. It is not a popular water activity beach but nice to relax to get away from crowd. The beach is not so long and the sand is beautifully soft but not very white. It is a favourite bathing and sunbathing location.

Ao Yon Beach

Ao Yon is another peaceful beach ideally suited for watching the sunset. It is located near Cape Panwa, 10km from Phuket town. Although quiet with beautiful emerald sea this beach is not really suitable for bathing or relaxing as the bay is usually full of boats and yachts. www.facebook.com/theguidephuket

BRUSH Restaurant & Lounge - Kalim Bay by Barry Daniel

B

BRUSH will be more than just a great restaurant, as we will have an ongoing program of art, shows, music and performance. We aim to create a unique atmosphere where friends will congregate and enjoy good food, creativity and life lived to the full.

www.theguidephuket.com

RUSH is a new restaurant in Kalim Bay that combines both artistic and culinary flair under one highly creative roof. Once in a while a truly innovative restaurant hits the Phuket culinary scene bringing a fresh approach to eating out. BRUSH Restaurant & Lounge will have its official opening on March 5th and has already sent shock waves into the island’s dining scene, both for its creative culinary fare as well as its unusual décor and ambience. BRUSH occupies the former space of Hung Fat’s Chinese restaurant overlooking the crashing surf of Kalim Bay just to the north of Patong. This part of Phuket is fast becoming a trendy sub-region of the island boasting a host of fine dining establishments spaced along the waterfront all of which look back on the nauseating lights of Patong. BRUSH is situated on the beachfront road and presents a welcoming indoor/outdoor aspect to the passerby, inviting you into its chic interior space, which immediately impresses and surprises with its unusual creativity. The restaurant is the brainchild of the mercurial Phuketbased, Australian artist and sculptor John Underwood, whose trend-setting work utilises recycled metallic and ‘junk’ materials, as well as ‘found’ objects in dramatic off-the-wall creations. “My intention is for BRUSH to become a centre of all kinds of art,” says John, “foremost is food art, but we plan to constantly change the interiors as part of the excitement of a space that offers art with cuisine. Our grand opening on February 11th, presents the fashion designs of Cassandra Harper whose label, Island Bliss, represents the ultimate in leisure elegance and we intend to keep the restaurant alive with a widely varied selection of events, music and performances.” In the new BRUSH adventure, John is joined by his daughter Khun Panatta Bunthanom (Mem) whose highly creative consultancy works with such top end clients as J.W. Marriott providing creative services, art shows, performance art and modeling events. Mem will be bringing the same sort of talent and creative

Food & Restaurants / 31 energy to the new BRUSH and says, “BRUSH will be more than just a great restaurant, as we will have an ongoing program of art, shows, music and performance. We aim to create a unique atmosphere where friends will congregate and enjoy good food, creativity and life lived to the full.” The creativity in the kitchen is under the stewardship of English Chef Martin Bower, who after graduating from Stratford College’s culinary arts programme, decided to see the world with

stints in hotels and resorts around the UK and then in Australia. Says Chef Martin, “I want to travel and learn about world cuisine. Using my basic talents with Mediterranean flavours, I’m excited about presenting a menu which adds the tastes of the Orient.” The menu features an eclectic and exciting array of tapas, Maki rolls and tempura to start the proceedings followed by a wide range of international and Mediterranean cuisine, utilising fresh local produce such as fruits, vegetables and seafood, as well imported meats from the finest international suppliers. The tapas at BRUSH are all priced around 250 THB with such delicacies as the dreaming crab roll consisting of soft-shell crab in tempura batter, rolled into a sushi shape and coated with bright orange Japanese caviar, served with pickled ginger, soy sauce and wasabi. Other great tapas include lemon and black pepper calamari and the grilled, marinated red snapper served with bell pepper aioli. The main courses at BRUSH feature imported beef from Australia and fresh seafood that is grilled to suit the guests’ taste and served with a selection of accompanying vegetables and sauces. Chef Martin also offers braised ox cheek in a red wine reduction, a rack of lamb and a tasty asparagus and green pea risotto with roquette and parmesan emulsion. BRUSH is also an inviting place just to drop by to savour an evening cocktail such as their signature Chili Mangkong (meaning ‘scorpion’ in Thai), or a memorable dessert such as the chocolate fondant with vanilla bean ice cream, which my partner declared “the best on Phuket”. Sitting at the indoor/outdoor tables, listening to the warm beats and watching the passing scene along Kalim Bay it’s easy to see why BRUSH is set to become an extremely popular new arrival on the Phuket night scene. Our recommendations for this month: For a relaxed snack any time of the day, you should not go past The Coffee Club. an outlet at Turtle Village Shopping Centre at Mai Khao Beach. If it’s a hearty steak you fancy, then we recommend Harry’s Steakhouse in Soi Patong Tower and another outlet in Karon Beach. Should you want to visit a household name during your stay, then you should consider having a meal at the famous Hard Rock Cafe located in Patong, adjoining the Marriott Courtyard Patong. Here

you will enjoy quality food in generous proportions, in a fantastic environment, where you can listen to live music, and party until the early hours. Another favourite of ours, and a well kept secret, is the Blow Bar at the end of Bangla Road. This is a very nice and relaxed space, located above Seduction Nightclub, and comprises a covered open sided space with spectacular views over Patong’s night time streetscape.

Full Moon Brew Work F

ull Moon Brew Work, located in Jungceylon shopping mall just behind the Chinese Junk, has established itself as the place to go for small batch, hand crafted, quality beer. However, despite its appeal to beer drinkers this is far from being a dank, smokey house of debauchery. Beer making is a true art and so deserves a refined, yet relaxed, surrounding in which to drink. Full Moon Brew Work is the first micro-brewery in Thailand to offer beer brewed on premises using local ingredients to create truly unique beers. The enthusiastic Sukij Thipatima is the driving force behind the operation and he has created a collection of beers which are perfect for drinking on their own but that also compliment the food on the menu nicely as well. The menu itself is an eclectic, and humourous mix of favourites from around the world all cooked to perfection and presented in a clean and unpretentious manner. Each menu item has been carefully selected to be coupled up with the beer of

your choice but some combinations work better than others. Try the Oriental Wheat beer along with the succulent flame grilled Norwegian salmon and you will understand why the name ‘Let’s Go Fishing’ is so apt for this dish. The subtly citrus and fragrantly spiced tones of the beer complement the salmon and side vegetables perfectly. Standing on the banks of the rivers waiting for a bite will never feel the same again without a pint of Oriental Wheat in hand. If you are not into fishing and you are more of a rodeo clown then you have got to try the Cowboy Ribs teamed up with Full Moon’s Phuket Lager. Barbecued honey marinated ribs washed down with a ‘Gaba’ rice infused lager makes for a great lunchtime meet with friends or as finger food whilst watching your favourite sports on the big screen TV’s. Or if you are after something a little more homely and comforting then you could do worse than a pint of Full Moon’s Dark Ale to sit alongside your creamy mashed potatoes and sizzling sausages of ‘Bangers & Mash’. The chocolate and coffee undertones of the Dark Ale help to bring out the richness of the bratwurst sausages. Other highlights on the menu include ‘Hail Caesar’ - the imperial salad, ‘Fried Me to the Moon’ - for fans of heavenly calamari and the oh-so snackalicious ‘Nachos Locos’. They are all as good as each other so it is difficult to recommend one above the other but with beers it tends to be a little more personal; as great as they all are its the Oriental Wheat that is the standout drink for me. The restaurant is open daily from 11am - Midnight, running a set menu for very reasonable 299THB including a half-pint of your preferred beer. Full Moon’s famous “Hundred Baht Happy Hour” is available daily from 4pm-7pm.

Four Styles of

P

Yoga

hysical postures, breathing and meditation are the main elements that make up yoga practice, but there are a number of different styles and each one focuses on particular techniques to create a flexible body and open mind. Yoga is based on ancient Indian philosophy and therefore represents far more than exercise. In many cases, teachers describe yoga as a form of meditation and some believe it is the first step towards enlightenment. Modern yoga styles often combine elements of the more traditional forms and some yoga centres on Phuket also now offer personalized programmes designed to meet individual needs.

Hatha Yoga

A system of yoga introduced back in the 15th century by a sage called Yogi Swatmarama; Hatha is considered the original system of yoga and is still the most popular form practiced today. Several other styles have since developed out of the Hatha postures and breathing, each adding their own variations. Hatha Yoga is essentially designed to create balance between the body and mind. It combines physical and spiritual elements through poses called Asanas, as well as breathing techniques called Pranayama, and meditation. The regular practice of Asanas helps practitioners develop muscle flexibility and bone strength, but also brings non-physical rewards such as increased powers of concentration and self-control.

Ashtanga Yoga

Ashtanga Yoga is distinct from other styles of yoga as it uses a combination of breathing and movement known as Vinyasa. The system was developed by K Pattabhi Jois and the poses are designed to develop the body’s health and strength. Each pose flows into the next and is accompanied by one, slow breath. The movement in Ashtanga also means it can be is more intense than other styles of yoga and practitioners generally work up a sweat. This creates heat and helps bring out toxins from the body to produce a form of natural cleansing. The breathing technique used in Vinyasa is even and steady, the aim being to achieve perfect Each yoga pose in the Bikram style is usually performed twice and held for a certain period of time. Yoga Sessions start from Standing Postures, and then move on to backbends, forward Bends, and twists. The poses are accompanied by Kapalabhati Breath or the “blowing in firm”. The Bikram yoga poses not only work on your muscles but also on your internal organs. Each pose stretches and strengthens your muscles, joints, and ligaments and, at the same time releases the toxins and work on your internal organs like the glands and the nervous system.

balance between the length of inhalation and exhalation. Ashtanga postures are classified into three different series, based on their level of difficulty. The Primary Series aims to detoxify and align the body. The Intermediate Series focuses on cleaning and opening the energy channels, which leads to purification of the nervous system. Finally, the Advanced Series is sub-divided into A, B, C and D postures, which integrate the overall strength and grace of the practice, leading to perfect balance.

Kundalini Yoga

Kundalini Yoga was introduced to the West by Yogi Bhajan in 1969 and concentrates on the release of dormant energy that sits at the base of our spine. This energy is likened to a coiled snake, and the name “kundalini” is actually Sanskrit for “coiled up”. The ultimate goal of Kundalini Yoga is to awaken this “snake” and send it moving up your spine all the way to your brain. For that reason, it is said to be the most powerful form of Yoga known today and can result in a sublime state of ecstasy and heightened awareness. The practice of Kundalini Yoga includes both yoga poses and meditation, but the main focus is more on chanting or mantras, combined with Pranayama breathing techniques. Once awakened, practitioners say they feel a variety of pleasurable and less pleasurable sensations. The pleasant feelings include tickling sensations along the spinal cord, sudden feelings of joy, and even visions. The less enjoyable kind may cause trembling, waves of heat, even some pain along the spine. Some yogis say that an awakening the Kundalini is the beginning of true enlightenment.

Bikram Yoga

Bikram Yoga is named after its founder Bikram Choudhury and is a series of 26 poses performed in a room with temperature of 105 degrees Fahrenheit. A variation of this style is sometimes called Hot Yoga and the heat allows you to go deeper and safer into challenging yoga postures. Heat also removes the risk of injuries and promotes sweating, which helps you release the toxins in your body.

T

here are scores of alternative tours on offer in Phuket: boat trips; pristine tropical islands; sunset cruises; eco-tours; jungle trekking, elephant rides etc. We consider only a small number of these to be quality experiences. Price is not the only factor, though generally you do get what you pay for: buy the cheapest tour and you can expect to spend the day with a crowd of other tourists seeking the cheapest way.

Phang Nga Bay Day Trips (or James Bond Island) No visit to Phuket would be really complete if one never got to see and wonder at the geographic grandeur of Phang Nga Bay. Every visitor, surely, must have seen photos of Phuket’s neighbouring bay of gigantic rock mountains rising vertically from calm, olive-green waters even before getting here. The sight of Phang Nga is dramatic, and being surrounded by these towering rocky monoliths is surely one of the highlights of a visit to Phuket. We strongly recommend a visit here.

Koh Pannyi – also in Phang Nga Bay (or Sea Gypsy village) Following the visit to crowded James Bond the cheaper tours shepherd their clients to Koh Pannyi island, the stilted water village seen in so many postcards. Often given the tourist name of Sea Gypsy village, it is in fact a community of Muslim fishermen, not sea gypsies. This village is indeed fascinating. It’s a pity about the tourist crowds; all tours companies arrive here at the same time for lunch, bringing up to 2-3,000 people every day. Although worth a visit, there are better ways to get to Pannyi than by mass tourism.

Boat cruises to Phang Nga The boat tours to Phang Nga Bay – the kind that leave from Phuket Island - usually cruise past the James Bond commotion without stopping, continuing their quiet journey through the bay of mountains. This is by far the molst preferable way to visit this geographically spectacular region.

Sea Kayaking Many visitors consider a canoeing trip into the ‘hongs’, the hidden caves of Phang Nga, the highlight of their visit to Phuket. This mystical world of collapsed caves connected to the sea by dark tunnels has been eroded from the limestone mountains over time by the rise and fall of the sea. Numerous companies have sprung up, and it is worth looking around to avoid the cheap quickies. Sign up with one of the well-established companies, or with original company that discovered the hongs and began it all, Sea Canoe. This can be an unforgettable trip well worth the time and money.

Renting your own speedboat Interestingly, most of the beautiful images of tranquil little islands and fabulously clear waters are taken on the outlying islands, not on Phuket itself. The only way to get to these islands is by renting a boat, and since there are few regular services your only option is to privately hire a speedboat for the day, although this is expensive it will provide you with memories to last a lifetime.

Renting Traditional Longtail Boats

If one wants a cheaper route, while taking in a cultural experience, rent a traditional, wooden ‘longtail’ boat. These are slower, but are also fun. Longtails are available on most of the major west coast beaches, or at the north end of Kata where they shelter at night. They are also available – at much better prices – from the boat pier at Chalong, or on the beach at Rawai, right at the southern tip of the island.

Watersports Diving in Phuket

Learning to Dive

Phuket, and its surrounding Andaman Sea, have gained international reputation as one of the world’s top diving destinations. The Similan Islands in particular, are frequently ranked among the world’s top ten. Several advantages make this region one of the best for both learners and experienced divers. For learners there is worldclass instruction at economical prices, and an abundance of aquatic life inhabit these warm and comfortable waters. If you’re scared of sharks, don’t be, any of the graceful specimens found here are harmless and relatively rare. Whale sharks, the biggest fish in the ocean at over 10 metres long, are at the other end of this equation, being more common here than in any other part of the world. Experienced divers the world over migrate to the Similan Islands knowing they have a near certainty of swimming with whale sharks. While large fish are not so common in Phuket’s waters, the variety of corals, both soft and hard, is striking. But perhaps most important for all divers, warm water and year-round clarity makes this a great place to be down with the fishes.

There are any number of places to learn to dive on Phuket. Just look for any 5 star PADI facility. A dive course will usually take 3 or 4 days, starting in the classroom, then moving to the swimming pool and finally the open ocean. The result is a diving certificate recognised around the world, as well as a lot of fun and new experience.

www.theguidephuket.com

Diving Day Trips For those who already have their diving certificate, a good range of day trips is available. A variety of diving destinations include the two Racha islands south of Phuket, several pinnacles in the direction of Phi Phi, and one large wreck of a car ferry that sank in a 30 metre location in the lower Bay.

Diving Liveaboards Enthusiasts come from around the world for these liveaboards. Some run for up to 10 days and visit neighbouring countries, usually Burma. Most divers book these trips well in advance, but those with time and flexibility can book a number of trips right here.

The Similan Islands, 90 kilometres Northwest of Phuket, is the most common liveaboard destination. In good conditions the water visibility here can be astounding, though it’s generally in the range of 20-30 metres which is still excellent. The Andaman Sea is generally quite calm, making diving here easy and pleasurable.

Fishing With so much water out there, there has to be fish, right? And of course there are fish out there – big fish, fighting fish, the sailfish. It’s Phuket’s one boast to fishing fame – there are few places in the world where one can catch sailfish so regularly. Boats invariably head to the Racha islands south of Phuket where deep, clear waters attract the sailfish and their prey. At certain times of year thousands of sailfish congregate in very small areas, constantly leaping out of the water to land on their sides with the biggest splash – rounding up schools of smaller bait fish. Even when one can’t catch them, the very sight of so many huge, leaping fish is a worthwhile spectacle. Though they can be caught all year round, the monsoon season is particularly good.

Watersports & Activities / 49 A wide variety of other fish are also plentiful including small tunas, Spanish mackerel, wahoo, dolphin-fish, barracuda. Bottom fishing can give an even greater variety in the catch. There are few sharks left in these waters. Some dedicated souls make the hourslong pilgrimage out to the continental shelf drop off, where the water suddenly drops to hundreds metres, and where, it is said, huge marlin rule the depths.

Tawan Cruises Tawan Cruises is Phuket’s leading yacht charter company providing guests with a memorable day (or multiple days) out amongst the scenic islands and waters around Phuket on a luxurious motor yacht. There is nothing better than spending days cruising island to island, and waking up each morning in the shadow of a different island. Sailing, unhurried and serene, allows one to really unwind and absorb the incredible surroundings. When cruising Phang Nga Bay and the outlying islands of Phuket and Krabi you will shares the occasional well known anchorages with a few other yachts, but otherwise meet only fishermen selling their catch.

Tawan Sea Adventures is Phuket’s newest fun activity on the water. Cruises amongst the famous sights of Phang Nga bay from your RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) and enjoy the bursts of speed when the boat will thrill you and ensure you go home with a big smile ! Property Review

The Charm Residence

T

he Charm Residence is an exciting new development in Patong Beach. Located just meters from the beach this is closest you will get as a foreigner to owning property on the beach in Thailand. The Charm apartments can be purchased freehold with a condominium title or leasehold on a 30 year lease with renewal options. No matter if your investment is for financial return or lifestyle, an investment in the Charm Residence is an assured and inspired choice. Buying a condominium is possibly the best investment possible for a foreigner in Thailand, as you can own it outright. But before you buy, make sure you understand exactly how to go about it. The Thai government has recently changed the rules governing condominium ownership. Previously, foreigners were only allowed www.theguidephuket.com

to buy up to 40% stake in any condo building. This was recently increased to 49%. This means that more condo units are now available on the market. With freehold, foreigners can buy and own condominiums, giving you full ownership rights as purchasers, including the right to sell or lease the property and to develop the property within the guidelines under Thai law. Astute investors are offered the opportunity to own a part of this outstanding property which will operate as an upmarket resort when completed. As an owner you are able to participate in the ongoing success of the resort and enjoy a healthy return from the investment programme no matter whether you purchase for investment or lifestyle. Designed in a contemporary style both the exterior and interior are fresh and in-

viting with a spacious layout. Separated into 4 buildings there are a total of 246 units available in 6 different styles ranging from studios to duplexes with prices starting from just 4.6 million Baht. Facilities of the complex are comprehensive and include a large ‘lagoon style’ swimming pool and there is also an additional roof-top infinity-edge swimming pool on Building D offering stunning, unobstructed views of the surrounding area. With a spa, restaurant, bar, business centre, secure underground car-parking, 24 hours CCTV monitoring and all of this just a short walk to the beach it is easy to see why The Charm is stirring up such a commotion. Shopper’s Delight Thai Silk

Long one of Thailand’s most famous products, silk weaving is still one of the major crafts in many rural areas. The variety of materials available in Phuket is wide, and varies both in design, from the traditional to modern to plain colours, and quality; 2-ply is thin and light, 3-ply or more becomes heavier and more expensive. Tailors, jewellery and souvenir shops in all areas carry silk. Many shops will tailor modern dresses or shorts from silk at a fraction of the price you would pay back home.

Ceramics

The two major centres for ceramic production are the well-known Chiang Mai, and Ratburi west of Bangkok. They produce an amazing range of wares from very traditional Thai and even Chinese tableware and decorative items to modern home decor items, the biggest of which you’ll need a truck to move. Some of these more modern items are creative and interesting. There is a fair range spread around the island, but you’ll have to drive and hunt to find it all.

Woodcarving

Most of this comes from the craft centres of Chiang Mai, and again, Thai skills show through in a great variety of items that can be both novel and creative or entirely traditional. Buddha images are one of the standards, but you can find figurines of all kinds and many other offbeat items for home decoration. Thailand makes some great teak furniture, though only a little is available in Phuket.

Antiques

Beware if you’re looking for genuine antiques, for this is one real danger www.theguidephuket.com

zone in Thailand. Read the passage below on Instant Antiques carefully; and remember that most genuinely old pieces of traditional Thai art, including Buddha images, require permits to take from the country.

Instant Antiques

This sounds like a contradiction, but this is now a thriving new industry in Thailand that arose in response to the overwhelming demand for beautiful old things and the short supply. Originally, cunning entrepreneurs crafted and carefully ‘aged’ wood, bronze and stone artworks to sell off as genuine antiques. But they produced such beautiful things that demand grew, and the industry came out into the open. Today whole villages of skilled workers produce beautiful objects of art that appear ancient, but which are sold cheaply as ‘reproductions’. This makes ‘antiques’ available to everyone, takes the pressure off the genuinely old things, and, best of all, virtually no-one can tell the difference between the real thing and the reproduction that you place in your home.

Custom Tailoring

This is definitely bargain country in Phuket. Tailors can import their wares easily to Phuket, and their overhead costs are low. Skills range from excellent to barely adequate, so look carefully and you can go home with both quality and real savings. It is important to start with a tailor early in your visit because at least two visits will be required, and those who are a little more finicky should plan on three visits to get things just right. Allow two or three days between each visit. The Guide Phuket recommends: Mister Singh’s Fashion Gallery, Patong Beach, www.fashiongallery.com. James Fashion House, Karon Beach, www.jamesfashionhouse.com.

Jewellery

Bangkok is the undisputed gemstone capital of the world. A large portion of the world’s diamonds, rubies and sapphires and other precious stones are imported raw into Thailand, cut and set by Thailand’s skilled workforce, and exported - often back to the countries they came from. Most of South Africa’s diamonds, Australia’s opals, Burma’s rubies and Sri Lanka’s varied gems pass through Bangkok for processing. Thailand is definitely the best place to purchase precious stones and jewellery, and with transport costs so low all of these bargains can be found also in Phuket but be warned: purchase only from a well-established shop, and hopefully you will know at least a little about the gemstones you desire before entering the shop.

Central Festival Phuket Phuket Town

With over 120,000 square meters bursting with prime shopping opportunities and world-class products it is easy to see why this consummate one-stop shopping and entertainment complex is so popular amongst Phuket residents and visitors. With a large selection of shops, restaurants, coffee shops, supermarket and cinema you can enjoy the largest, most complete shopping and entertainment complex in southern Thailand.

Jungceylon - Patong Beach

Located centrally in Patong Beach is the newest addition to the growing trend of shopping malls in Phuket. ‘Jungceylon‘ was the old name for Phuket when it was still a prosperous port town and trading in the region was at its peak, this shopping mall retains a lot of the old history of Phuket in its architecture and style and is a joy to visit for this alone. Shopping wise the choice is world-class, comprising of well over 300 shops with ample car parking space, res-

hinese antiques are becoming more and more fashionable but it can be difficult to find original and interesting pieces. The Dream Chinese Antique Studio was the result of, you guessed it, a dream in which the owner was summoned to come to Phuket by Buddha. Sounds a bit far fetched but it is a true story and the owner, already being a long time collector and enthusiast of ancient Chinese ornaments, opened her gallery with a small collection at first which has now grown into such a diverse and interesting range of artefacts, trinkets and other paraphernalia there really is something for everyone. As you wander through the gallery you will be amazed at how beautiful some of the pieces are, almost deserving of being placed in a museum for future prosperity. Antique handmade cabinets, statues, traditional Chinese earthenware, metalwork and wallhangings are all available. New items are added regularly, hand selected and imported directly from China. The Jatujak (or JJ) weekend market in Bangkok is world famous but few people realise that there is an equally good alternative here in Phuket, albeit on a smaller scale. Situated opposite the Naka Temple (which is also worth a visit) outside of Phuket Town, just 5 minutes from Central Festival on the Chao Fa West road lies Phuket’s equivalent to Bangkok’s JJ Market. Here you will find all manner of things for sales from seemingly useless second-hand household junk and cute little trinkets to garden ornaments, clothing and ideal presents for all your friends and family. There is also an abundance of food of drink stalls to keep the energy levels up whilst you wander around. The market starts in the afternoon and goes on until the evening time when it can get really very lively.

54 / Transportation or more. This can be a good way to get about the island if you prefer not to drive yourself.

Motorcycle taxis

Transport on the Island

H

ow much of Phuket have you actually seen? Wouldn’t you like to explore some more? Well, here we list some of your options for getting around the island’s highways and byways.

To and from the airport

Airport transfers are relatively simple, the airport is at the far north of the island, some 30 kilometers from Phuket Town and even further from most of the popular beaches like Patong and Karon. It is best to use one of the two official transport companies with booths right inside the arrival lounge, you can’t miss them. Private Airport Limousines or minibus are available to get to the major beaches at the south or west of the island. Metered taxis are also available and are cheaper than the airport limousines, as are ‘private’ taxis but we suggest you avoid these since problems have been known to occur. The Airport Bus is a cheaper alternative as long as you are not in a rush. Ask at the airport for their current departure schedules and pricing. Car rental is available and companies, such as Budget and National, have offices located in the airport.

Airlines in & out of Phuket

A multitude of airlines now run scheduled flights to and from Phuket, and during high season chartered flights are also available. Budget airlines such as Air Asia, Nok Air and One-2-Go Air all run convenient and economical flights to other provinces throughout Thailand. www.theguidephuket.com

Song-taews

There are few buses on Phuket, and the main form of transport from beach to town is the ‘song taew’; a truck converted to carry passengers in the back on two long benches. They are usually colourful, with a sign on front showing where they are going. These vehicles leave from a set stop by the fresh produce market in Phuket Town, reaching every major beach area on the island. They run approximately every hour but there are no fixed schedules, and they run when there are sufficient passengers. When leaving the beach areas to head back to town they usually cruise around the streets, slowly, picking up passengers. It is slow, but cheap, with the fare from Phuket town to Patong now set at just 25 THB per person!

‘Tuk-Tuks’

If you want your own private taxi, look for a tuk tuk, a tiny minitruck converted in the manner of the bigger song taew above to carry about four (or more!) passengers. The tuk-tuk gets its name from the noise its little engine makes. There are fleets of these in all major tourist areas, and they will take you anywhere, for a price. The going rate for the relatively short ride between Patong and Phuket town can be as much as 450 THB, one way! You can attempt to bargain but don’t expect much movement on their prices and be aware that at night the price of tuk-tuks shoots up. You can also rent one of these tuk-tuks for the day. Expect to pay around 2,000 THB

These will be a new experience for many people and are a convenient, yet nerve wracking, way to get around. All fares must be negotiated before the ride. These taxi riders are easily identified by their special coloured jackets identifying the location of their home base. Many have the word ‘taxi’ written in English on this jacket. Do not take a taxi from anyone who is not wearing one of these jackets.

Renting a motorcycle

Motorcycles, big and small, can be rented all over the island and are a popular choice for many tourists. Zipping around with the breeze in your hair is tempting for anyone but be careful, the hospitals here see a never-ending stream of foreigners arriving with skin missing from arms and legs, or sometimes worse. The accident rate on Phuket is one of the highest in Thailand, with 90% of road accidents involving motorcycles! Note that Thai law requires the driver to carry a valid license at all times, and all riders to wear helmets – even though most Thais (including the police!) ignore the regulations. The police occasionally enforce both laws, so beware. The real danger here is this: NONE of the motorcycles rented here have insurance. If you rent one and cause damage you will be held fully responsible, with some greedy owners charging significantly more than the real cost of the damage. Be extremely cautious!

Renting your own car

Since Phuket is quite a large island, renting your own car can be one of the most pleasant ways to get around and it gives you freedom to go where and when you want. Renting is easy; private rental cars are easily found in every beach area, and major rental companies operate in most resorts. If renting private vehicles from the side of the road, beware: few of these vehicles have insurance, and this can prove disastrous in the event of an accident. Renting a car allows you get off the island and see the beautiful, neighbouring

provinces of Phang Nga and Krabi. The roads are good and the scenery spectacular, making for a great day out.

Regional buses

The long distance bus station is in Phuket town, directly across from the Royal City Hotel. From here both air-con tour buses and cheap, ‘orange crush’ buses leave for destinations north, south and east. There are regular services to Bangkok, Krabi, Surat Thani, Nakorn Srithammarat, Trang, Haad Yai and other minor provincial capitals. Most of the tour buses to Bangkok leave around 5pm arriving in Bangkok about 6am the following morning. Tickets can be purchased either at the bus station or through travel agents.

Transport by boat

Regular ferry boat services from Phuket run only to the Phi Phi Islands, Koh Yao Noi and Krabi. There are unscheduled boats to Koh Bon, Racha Yai and Koh Yao Yai. You can get to Koh Lanta by changing boats at Koh Phi Phi.

Most people get to the other smaller islands by renting their own speed boats or even by chartering yachts.

Whatever your chosen mode of transport may be, enjoy exploring the island, there is plenty to see and do, more than you might have realised. Happy hunting! www.facebook.com/theguidephuket
