DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

Linkage created between site and timber craft in combination of timber crafting element and the plant densely grown on the site.

APPLICATION OF CRAFTING SKIN



CONNECTIVITY Traditional timber crafting is dying due to the using of advanced machine and lacking of vocational training. L2L Timber Crafting Cultural Centre is design to create a connectivity between nation and craft.

Using wood lathe machine

Visitors can learn to do timber crafting in both traditional and advanced way in the workshop. Different spaces in the cultural are connected to allow communication between people.

TARGET USER L2L Timber Crafting Cultural Centre is a place for everyone to take part in the process of wood carving. Artisans have the chance to exchange their knowledges with each other. This cultural centre act as a platform for artisans to share their knowledges to the visitors.

Students are the backbone of the country. They can share their experiences and thoughts to others after visiting the cultural centre.

Nearby Residents

L2L Cultural Centre are designed for nearby residents to organize community activities such as competitions and campaigns to improve the neighbourhood relationship.

Students of all ages

Tourists can promote the timber crafting internationally after impressed by the process and outcome of timber crating.

CASE STUDY CIRCULATION


Visitors travel from one museum to another through the solar shaded canopy at the middle of the cultural centre.


BAMBOO AND CONNECTIVITY Bambusa Blumeana is a densely tufted, sympodial bamboo. Sympodial-tufted bamboos or clumping bamboos, have axillary buds on the stem base which develop directly into shoots and then grow into new stems.

Form is arranged in perpendicular and connected to the main building.

1st Stage

This characteristic allow them to carry out the propagation cycle repeated with stem base of new stems develop into new shoots and grow into new bamboo stems again. An underground rhizome system of mother bamboo and new stems is formed. Connection is apply between the buildings in the form of walkways.

2nd Stage

Old building

Form is rotated in 45° to facing South-East for sufficient sunlight.


FORM WITH ENVIRONMENT

Form of building incorporate with some existing tree

Form of the building with shorter surface facing to North-East lead the wind to enter the space.

Longer surface of building facing to South-East get sufficient sunlight.

Visual Connection

Physical Connection The buildings are connected through the walkway.

Visually connection occurs between spaces through the openings and balconies.

EXTERIOR

THE BUILDING SKIN IS APPLIED ON THE BOTH LONGER SIDES OF THE WORKSHOP. THE SKIN IS TILTED IN CERTAIN ANGLE TO GET SOME SUPPORTION FROM THE ROOF BEAM. THE SOLID AND VOID FORM OF THE SKIN CAST IRREGULAR SHADOW ONTO THE BUILDING.


VIEW FROM PURA TANJUNG SABTU TO L2L TIMBER CRAFTING CENTRE.


BALCONY AT THE 1ST FLOOR OF PURA TANJUNG SABTU IS VISUALLY CONNECTED TO THE RESTING AREA BESIDE THE POND, LIBRARY AND AUDITORIUM.


A SMALL COURTYARD IS DESIGNED INSIDE THE LIBRARY TO PROVIDE A BETTER RESTING PLACE FOR THE USERS.

INTERIOR


CAFETERIA IS THE SPACE OPEN UNTIL NIGHT. SUFFICIENT ARTIFICIAL LIGHTINGS ARE NEEDED. CRAFT LIGHTING IS USED IN THE SPACE.


WORKSHOP IS OPEN FOR EVERYONE TO MAKE TIMBER CRAFT. LARGE OPENINGS AND SKYLIGHTS ALLOW SUFFICIENT SUNLIGHT TO ENTER THE SPACE DURING DAYTIME.

TIMBER CRAFTING LAB CAN BE ACCESS THROUGH THE OUTDOOR RAMP AND THE INDOOR STAIRCASE.
