INTRODUCTION VOLUME 2 – REVISITINGINDUSTRIAL HERITAGE
In the past, we have learnt that Kinta Valley, Perak is once famous for its tin mining production during the tin mining rush era (between the year 1884-1895). For this semester, we aremoving our research further, towards the East Coast of Peninsular Malaysia, where one of the longest and deepest Underground Mine in the world [mining hard minerals such as gold, copper, and tin back in the days] is located.EL DORADO OF THE EAST-meansThe Golden OneorThe Lost City of Gold; A title given to the small town of Sungai Lembing, Pahang for its significant economical contribution when it became the epicentre for tin mining in the 1900s undera British company -Pahang Consolidated Company Limited (PCCL) who had a 120-year leaseto mine the area. We question the importance of preserving the Industrial / infrastructure heritage as historical monuments (relics) that symbolizes the local historyand past culture. After facing an economic downturn due to the crash of global tin prices in the 1980s -which forces PCCL to cease operations in 1986 has transformed Sungai Lembing into an abandoned ghost town. The surviving facilities and machines used in the Mining Industry and the mining township itself should be protected to promote cultural heritage that contains memories of the glorious past. SITE STUDY-The mining town of Sungai Lembing has been selected as the proving ground for this semester. There are 2 siteoptions for students to choose. [SITE A –The Burnt-downhistorical Shophouse// SITE B -Underground Tin Mining PCCL site]. UNIT F studio will be divided into three (3) preset themes to guide students in the formulation of a research topic, conceptual narrative, and the final design proposal.

The tourism narration collage highlights the historical and adventurous storyline throughout our site - Sg. Lembing. One primary principles adopted in this project is “Tourism”. The layout of Sg.Lembing is separated into 2 major locations, the heart of the town and the borderlines of the town. Tourists used to visit the main attractions including the museums, tin quarry, flower gardens, photographies, river sports and other outdoor activities, while settling for accommodation on the opposite side of the river. In other words, the river became a crucial connectivity element within the site anchored by series of bridges. Without consistent preservation of this connectivity, tourist began to desert the vicinity, hence eventually becoming a ghost town.
004
During the 1900s initially, the village opposite the heart of the town across the river is a Malay based rural area. As the tin mining industry around Sungai Lembing began to develop in the past, many Chinese workers began to migrate into Sg. Lembing in order to get an employment opportunity in the business. Periodically, the village began to assimilate and adopt influence from various beliefs, becoming a multi-cultural and multi-religious community. Today, the majority of the population adopts Buddhist, Islam, and Christian beliefs.
The rural settlement embodied the behavior and local culture away from modern technology. Enriching their lifestyle and business including numerous food and beverage business like mamak and kopitiam serving local food such as : Sg. Lembing Mee, Mee Jawa, Coconut Biscuit, Tofu Hua, Tofu Cheesecake, and the well renowned roasted pork. Additionally, the village is a mix of both Malay and Chinese community living together harmoniously, with Cantonese and Hakka as the common language within the Chinese community present there. Several house typology can also be categorized into : • Traditional house -Timber construction, shophouses style, vernacular architecture • Commercial building - timber and bricks hybrid construction, colonial style • Accommodations - Contemporary style The village has amused numerous visitors with the distinctive beauty of the natural landscape. Hills and valleys surrounding the village provide stunning view of the sunrise. The village organized along the river allows a perfect soil profile for agricultural purposes. Therefore, people took advantage of this natural condition and begin deforesting nearby forests to be replaced into a mass palm oil farm. As a result, sedimentation gradually accumulate by the river causing the area to be vulnerable to flood.
Many elderly who are mostly former tin miners live a more slow-paced lifestyle in the community, while younger generations living a more active lifestyle in the town. To sum up, Sungai Lembing is a memory of history from the old generation along with old buildings as they attempt to remain the essence of the originality.
005
1 description Sungai Lembing was once a famous tourist spot where locals would often visit and appreciate the culture of the land. In our modern era the community would not prefer to visit Sungai Lembing due to more choices for leisure activities outside of Sungai Lembing. Having a nearby city in the area people would choose to leave Sungai Lembing for the leisure of the city.

2 description Religion is the most common topic in our generation and that can be found richly in Sungai Lembing. Reflecting the past and present of religion activities, the use of the temples, mosques and churches are now abandoned and now we are moving towards through virtual religious activities.

007
3 description Sungai Lembing is famous for its natural landscape where there is alot of hills, mountains and rivers that can be explored. With our modern day society more people are willing to demolish and develop the land of Sungai Lembing hence the cultural landscape are soon to be forgotten and not preserved by the communities living in the area.
雙 溪 林 明 .
008
4 description The community across the river is well known for their rich chinese culture communities. In the past the people would often enjoy their morning breakfast at a small teashop where they would eat and drink with their families and friends. As of now people are slowly evolving as they now prefer to go to cafes and fast food restaurants. Soon these livelihood activities will soon be forgotten.

The Heart (Journey)
Sungai Lembing has a rich culture and diversity where the communities share a harmony bond. Over the past few years the harmony bond of the communities have built up the town as of now which it can be seen by today. Creating a place filled with memories with “The Heart”.
0014
Flooding Memories (Livelihood)
The communities of Sungai Lembing faced a common issue that has happened over and over again for the past few years which is the flood. The flooding period would often cause objects around the town to be afloat which the communities would have a clear memory of the “Flooding Memories”.
0015
Back to the Roots (Culture)
The Village across the river in Sungai Lembing is famous for its rich Chinese culture. Where the locals of the chinese culture would often practice a lot of their cooking skills in their cozy wooden furnitures that is traditionally self mechanism. Having each space that is planned based on their needs and wants which would bring them “Back to the Roots” of their culture.
0016
Death Ride (Past)
A sad historical past that has happened a lot during the old days of Sungai Lembing where the tin miners would work hard on a sunny day in the deep tunnels. There would be accidents that would occur during the working days and some accidents have caused deaths. After years of tin mining eventually the tin mine business have shut down causing lack of maintance to the place. Left to be abandoned the tin mine will be known as the “Death Ride” to anyone who wish to explore the mines again.
0017
Golden Era (Community)
Sungai Lembing is well known for their tin mining activities which creates a lot of opportunities for people to come to Sungai Lembing to work as a tin miner. Back in the days people would often migrate to Sungai Lembing and start their lives there as it was known as the “Golden Era” of tin mining period.
