Glossary. Grades
Prime
Rustic A
Rustic B
A specially selected clean grade with small sound knots showing minimal colour variation. These boards are taken from the centre of the tree and have a flowing grain and texture.
This grade shows a greater range of character than Natur and displays more variation in grain and colour. Larger sound / filled knots, sapwood and small filled cracks add to the depth and texture of this product.
A grade that allows for larger sound knots, colour variation, filled cracks and some dark streaks. Perfect for the appearance of a beautiful natural floor.
Unfinished
Natural Oil
Stained
Protective layers of oil / UV oil or UV lacquers provide a beautiful, long lasting finish, perfectly suited to today‘s environment. Attention to detail counts and our ranges benefit from the most modern and technically thorough processes available.
Becoming very popular as the range of colours and stains increase. Supplied in its natural form, a great opportunity to stamp your own mark on the Love FloorsTM range.
The most natural coating for wood flooring, the oil deepens the natural colour of the wood, creating a beautiful matt sheen to the surface, which is then left to cure naturally.
Stain is applied to the surface of the product by hand or machine and then buffed in, penetrating deep into the wood. The surface is then sealed with either an oil or lacquer.
UV Oil
UV Lacquered
Smoked
Each coating is cured under UV light, creating a slight satin sheen and a tougher surface finish. This product will not need any oiling on installation.
UV satin and matt lacquered finishes provide a smooth hard wearing surface, enhancing the natural beauty of the floor, providing a rich and warm appearance.
The timber is stored in a drying room and ‘smoked‘ for up to 3 days. During this time the wood colour deepens and creates a dark rich finish penetrating deep into the wood.
Surfaces
Hand Scraped
Brushed
Machined
Using traditional methods the board surface is carefully tool scraped following the natural contours of the wood. The result is a gently undulating, smooth surface.
A steel brush is used to remove the soft grain from the top layer, creating a textured surface. This process enhances the natural grain and beauty of the wood.
Producing a smooth to the touch finish, our products represent the very best in quality sanded floors.
love floorsTM range of floors are created to suit a wide variety of domestic and commercial applications. Our grading structure allows you to make the right choice for your environment.
Natur A vibrant floor with some colour variation, small sound / filled knots and some sapwood. A floor with more character and grain variation. Contains a small percentage of Rustic A Grade.
Finishes
Choosing the right surface will add character and style to any interior. From the sleek and precise machine sanded board through to the tactile hand scraped finish, love floorsTM ranges provide a real difference to your flooring design.

We are unique
What we do The detail The finish
As one of oldest UK companies specialising in bespoke, hand-finished flooring, we can source boards from anywhere in the world. Using the raw timber, traditional hand crafted techniques, and bespoke treatments and finishes, we create high-end flooring from smooth-sanded, unfinished oak. We work board-by-board, block-by-block to create the exact flooring for you. If it’s a unique floor you want, we will create it precisely to your requirements in terms of sheen, finish and colour. Even the size and shape of knots can be treated and worked to match exactly with your vision.

Your dream floor.
By hand, by craftsmen.
Wood. Naturally.
It’s there, you can see it . . . your dream floor.
The advantage of working by hand and not by machine is that we can check every inch of the wood to make sure that a techniques are applied correctly.
We can use any timber but usually work with European oak because it is so versatile - it is very blond to start with and contains tannins that are very receptive to the chemical reactions and processes we use to age, weather and colour the wood.
We work with you, your architect or designer. Sometimes working from a previously sourced sample, a piece of wood, or a photograph; we take your ‘vision’, use our multiple processes, and match it! Alternatively, visit our showroom where we work with you for a personalised version of one of our standard finishes. What follows is a period of consultation: we give you a number of sample panels to see which ones you prefer; then make those into bigger panels. We hone and modify if necessary . . . until exactly right. With few exceptions, anything is possible! With the skills, experience and techniques we have there is practically no limit to the number of finishes we can create, and our hard coatings mean that our floors last!
Finishing by hand, our craftsmen can follow twists, knots and distortions - and bring out those unique features - where machines can only apply a finish uniformly and sometimes cover up key, natural contrasts in the wood. We do use hand-operated machines to brush and tumble by our wood, but every board is processed and checked individually. The key element of our process is time, and our quality of our craftsmen. Deep, rich finishes need to be built up reaction by reaction, sometimes over many hours or even days. At each stage a man works at a bench, board-by-board, whether it is a modest order or many thousands of metres. The processes can take up to three weeks from start to finish.
Using European oak is key. The European oak wood runs from Britain to Siberia in natural forest which has the optimum growing season, climate, soil, and mineral content, and there is more space for the trees to grow and meander than intensive forests in other parts of the world. When sourcing oak we always go back to the same areas in Europe which have the very best conditions. Wood from different places behaves differently: different tannin levels in the timber and mineral levels in the soil, which vary the effect of finishing techniques. Because we always use the same wood we know exactly how it behaves. While oak acts like a blank canvas because it is very white, some clients choose wood such as black American Walnut for its gingery colour, or Douglas Fir or Elm which have an orange hue.

modo taylormaxwell.co.uk/floors 9
It’s not what you do, it’s how you do it. The first stage is picking the unfinished smooth-sanded wood according to the size and what kind of grain is required.
Brushing /
Then there are 3 main stages of preparing unfinished wood: brushing, tumbling and fuming. You can have just one, two or all three - but almost every floor we finish will go through at least one of these stages.
Wood has hard and soft parts, and we use a rotating brush to pull the soft part of the grain away to give texture and depth, leaving the harder elements of the grain which gives each piece of wood its unique character.
One of the few techniques where we use a machine.
Our brushing machine is the largest in the UK. Its maximum width of 900mm means we can finish stairs and doors to the same specifications as our flooring.
10
modo
Fuming /
Tumbling / Distressing
This is done in a large double-glazed, silicon-sealed, airtight room.
To create flooring that looks worn, weathered or distressed we use a big metal cylinder full of objects such as nuts, bolts, stones and broken glass that mark and dent the wood as it rolls around.
The boards are placed on racks so that all the wood is exposed, then we feed in ammonia hydroxide gas which we create from a liquid. The vapour from this chemical sits in the room and reacts with the tannic acid in the wood to grey the wood. This can take a few minutes or several days depending on how dark you want the finish.
We can make a floor look any age because the longer you leave it the more dented it gets: 20 seconds to leave it lightly distressed; four minutes to look like an old pub or a medieval castle.
It is a totally natural reaction. Every piece of wood has a different amount of tannin, and there will even be variations (in tannin levels) along the same board.
After you take the wood from the machine, the second stage of tumbling is desplintering. We use emery boards and shave hooks to massage every block by hand to take out the splinters and smooth the floor to create the weathered effect.
By reacting with the organically occurring levels of tannin, this process causes wood to age as it would do naturally over time, making a beautiful piece of wood look even better.
There are only 2 of these machines in the UK so people bring their wood from all over the country to get that oldfashioned look.
taylormaxwell.co.uk/floors 11
The devil is in the detail. Once the wood has been prepared there are a variety of processes we use - individually or in combination with each other - to weather, age, create colour and texture:
Staining /
Bleaching /
Hand staining works with the nature of a piece of wood to enhance it, rather than coating uniformly as a machine would
This involves bleaching a piece of wood by hand with a sponge then washing it off.
We take a dye made with water, bleach or methylated spirits and apply it with a sponge straight onto the wood board by board. Because this is being done by hand the dye can be applied along the grain to highlight knots and differences in the wood. This is a very popular process - about 50 per cent of the floors we finish are stained. We make our own dyes. One called iron acetate is made from a 200 year-old recipe mixing vinegar and rusty nails or steel wool, which we then filter and apply to the wood to blacken it.
12
The result depends on temperature and time: ten seconds gives a very mild effect, or leave overnight for a deeper impact. Our factory is maintained at a constant temperature which gives us full control over the bleaching effect. One classic use of bleaching is on boards that have been stained with iron acetate: the bleach lightens the acetic acid in the wood to give that typical silvery old park bench look that you can’t get from a tin.
modo
Pasting /
Burning /
Washing /
We apply a thick paste - usually white, off-white or light grey. The paste has hydrated lime in it which reacts with the tannins in the wood. The chemical reactions from the pastes go deep into the wood to produce a rich ageing effect.
We apply an extremely hot flame to the surface of the wood to blacken it - but not for too long as that will melt the glue.
Washing is done in tandem with other processes.
You can wash it off instantaneously or leave it overnight for a deeper effect.
We do edge scorching, surface scorching or a full burn. The natural reaction of fire on wood is different where there are knots and tight parts than where the grain is more open and burns quicker. Burning is often used as a base: the burn plays with the grain, and then you can layer other techniques on top of it.
Washing unfinished wood with water furs up the grain to receive chemicals for staining or pasting differently- it prepares the board to receive the finish in a more ingrained and natural way. We also wash off paste and bleach with a handheld hose to ensure exactly the right finish.
taylormaxwell.co.uk/floors 13
Your floor. Your finish. Once the wood has been prepared there are a variety of processes we use individually or in combination with each other - to weather, age, create colour and texture: Finishing stages seal in the effects using oil or lacquer:
Oiling / buffing
Oiling / rolling
This occurs after the other stages have created the specific appearance that the client wants.
Some finishes require a roll rather than a buff, for example a clear lacquer which is water-based is rolled by hand.
We use oil or lacquer as finish coats - chemicals that harden and protect the look of the wood underneath. We pour the chemical on board by board, and use a hand buffing machine that spins round and rubs the oil into the wood until it is spread evenly and thinly.
Whether the finish coat is buffed or rolled, our craftsmen check every inch of the wood to make sure every board is perfect. The oil will seal the colours in, or you can tint the oil to further enhance the colour. We apply three coats of oil to make our floors very hardwearing. In kitchens, shops, restaurants or dining rooms stains such as red wine will repel and can just be wiped off, and the perfect look of the floor is easily maintained.
