WHAT'S NEW? ASTORIA’S OLD TOWN BAKERY
A new bakery has arrived with a wealth of foods prepared with recipes from Astoria. The Old Town Bakery has opened up in Hannam-dong behind the Hamilton Hotel. The bakery serves what you would expect from an old town bakery; that is, fresh artisan bread, scones, biscuits and corn bread. In addition, the Old Town Bakery carries a wide variety of other food like beef pot pie, meatloaf, quiche, chili and mixes for pancakes and cornbread. The dishes themselves are named after the chef’s friends and family members - the lemon meringue is named after a family friend, the pecan pie is named after a former neighbor, and the pot pie is named after the aunt from whom the recipe originated. Pasha first appeared in 2001 with a location in Gangnam. Offering some of the best Halal cuisine in Korea, Pasha is now opening a brand new location in Itaewon just up the station from Itaewon Station. The entire interior is imported from Turkey and they have a large and extensive menu of Turkish cuisine on menu. With over 20 varieties of charcoal roasted kebab, there’s definitely a lot to try here, but the specialty lamb might be the star of the show. There’s a new stylish and sophisticated restaurant making a name for itself in the alleys of Itaewon. Pampita opened in early March with smart furnishing and a range of dishes for a variety of tastes. The restaurant’s main interior has been designed to look like a polo clubhouse with a terrace that is evocative of an equestrian stable- with table and chairs to dine in, of course. The cuisine focuses on European tastes including a small but extensive selection of pasta such as aglio e olio, vongole, and melanzane along with salads, steaks, desserts, wines and beers. More than the pasta, the salads are sure to raise a few eyebrows. Especially the Gravadlax Salmon Salad which features a Nordic recipe of salad cured in salt, sugar, and dill. The focus at Pampita, however, sits firmly on the marbled hanwoo steaks which are, invariably, of the 1+ grade. ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP AT BONNY'S PIZZA PUB The International Cricket Council (ICC) Cricket World Cup is well underway with over ten million US dollars up for grabs and ten teams swinging for the fences. This year, the 2015 Cricket World Cup is being held in Christchurch, New Zealand and Melbourne, Australia. The qualifying matches started on February 14th and will continue until March 15th. The quarter-finals are scheduled to be played on March 18th with the finals scheduled for March 29th at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. MEET THE CHEF CONTENTS For the past three years, Hyeon-joon Kwon has made a home in Itaewon serving up plates of Caribbean food made with Jamaican recipes. Although his restaurant, TúCan, is only three years old, the story of his venture is over a decade in the making. It started with his work as a producer on “Kimchi Chronicles” that brought him into close proximity with the kitchen. He wasn’t a stranger to the culinary world to begin with, but the show introduced him to professional chefs and the professional world of cooking. Even though the show was short lived, it left its impact. An initial attempt at learning English left him considering other choices when he opted to live in South America; not just to learn the language but to explore the culture. In Colombia, he lived at a homestay with an elderly woman who taught him Caribbean cuisine, while in Jamaica he learned the recipe for Jerk Chicken from an old man who sold it on the streets. Trips back and forth across the continent, and indeed the world, brought him face to face with a bevy of cuisines. By the time he opened TuCan in 2012, he had taken culinary classes, worked in two kitchens in New York, and traveled to over 50 countries. The menu at TúCan is a simple reflection of his time in South America: Jerk Chicken and Orange Chicken. Marinated overnight in a bed of herbs and sauces, both birds are baked and served with Mexican style potato chips (another stop on Kwon’s adventures). Even the drinks are Caribbean with TúCan Punch (passion fruit) leading the selection of islander cocktails. If you’re split between what to get, you can always try out the Half and Half for a taste of both worlds.

Brewed by the Lagunitas Brewing Company, the DayTime Ale is a light American style IPA with a lower than expected alcohol content to allow for several tastings in a single sitting (ABV of 4.65%). Advertised as a brew light enough to drink during lunch and still have a clear head for a days worth of work, the DayTime Ale offers the hoppiness of an IPA with tones of pine and citrus to build on a foundation of rounded hop and toasty malt. It also has just 140 calories per 12 ounces, but still keeps a potent hop flavor. With scents of fresh fruit and citrus aromas as well as flavors of grapefruit, pine, green apple, and wheat, the DayTime Ale is the perfect beer to enjoy as the weather warms up. Even in the US, Lagunitas isn’t a widely available brand even though it does get a lot of love. That makes its availability in Korea all the more surprising. Dunkel 5%-The Table Brewing Co. Aroma: On the first sniff I get toasted chocolate followed by a very subtle background toffee/dark cherry note. Appearance: Dark brown and depending on how you look at it in the light, deep copper with a creamy tan head. Flavor: Toasted bread with slightly burnt crusts first comes to mind. There’s then a slightly bitter, dark chocolate covered almond note on the mid palate that’s balanced nicely with a mild sweetness and a roasted note that sticks around on the follow through. The lager yeast did a beautiful job. Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation. Overall Impression: The Munich malt takes center stage with it’s melanoidins that give its signature toast flavor. This is a very pleasant lager. A true to style Munich Dunkel. An excellent gateway craft beer to get typical lager drinkers to stray from their path and see the light. The great thing about beer is that each individual tastes something different.
