REFLECTION After living through the past nine months of a global pandemic, stuck at home, and unable to play shows across the world, 5SOS committed themselves to pave the path for what their future looked like as a band. As they quickly approached their 10th anniversary, how could they build upon their success in the poppunk-rock world to create a sustainable, epic future for 5SOS? It started with songwriting and spending hours upon hours in the studio. On February 7, 5SOS celebrated the seventh anniversary of their debut single - She Looks So Perfect. The chart-topping song launched their international career and set the stage for the band. Throughout the beginning of 2021, the band reflected on many moments of their past. From simply relistening to CALM to highlighting Calum’s favorite song, Heartbreak Girl, 5SOS clearly and consistently reminded themselves about the path that led them to where they are today. Finally, they were forced to pause, think and attempt to comprehend the whirlwind that was their career. As a result of this pause, this moment of air amidst an insane life, Luke Hemmings released his first solo single, Starting Line, and announced his debut album “When Facing The Things We Turn Away From.” This album commemorated Luke’s 10 years of learning, love, travel, family and living a onein-a-million kind of life.

2021 FORWARD-THINKING Recognizing that it would be yet another year before they could perform in front of fans worldwide, 5SOS took to social media to connect with the millions of people who have supported them around the globe. From breaking Twitter’s new audio feature called Spaces to finally utilizing TikTok and providing a (terrible) ranking of 5SOS songs, fans got to see more of the inner workings and relationship dynamics of the band. Despite spending most of the year in Los Angeles writing and recording without releasing anything as a band (yet), 5SOS continued to have careerdefining moments throughout 2021. First, there were rumors that they were no longer with their long-time management company, Modest!, and record label Interscope. In the back-half of the year, 5SOS announced that they would be represented by YM&U Group and release music through the growing BMG record label. Through these strategic partnerships, 5SOS will have more liberty to create what they want to create and be the band they want to be. In September, 5SOS played their first live show in nearly two years. As part of the California lineup of Global Citizen, the band performed a small set to fans in desperate need of seeing their favorite band. The best part? Millions tuned in from around the world via livestream to once again experience the feeling of togetherness and synergy that can only be felt during live shows. At the time of this magazine’s release, there are still two months of 2021 left – two significant months leading up to and following the monumental 10 year anniversary. There is so much to look forward to as we approach the end of 2021 and the future of 5 Seconds of Summer.

MEET THE FANS Teagan Mason (@ghostofteagan) Teagan has been a fan of 5SOS since 2012 after finding out about them when Louis Tomlinson from One Direction tweeted the link to their music video for “Gotta Get Out.” Over the years, she has seen 5SOS six times so far! First for the Where We Are Tour when they opened for 1D, then twice for the Meet You There Tour, twice for the World War Joy Tour, and then in 2019 at Boston Jingle Ball. She loves seeing 5SOS win awards and seeing how happy they are when they are touring or playing shows like Jingle Ball or Fire Fight. She also loves seeing them get number one albums and singles. But, most of all, Teagan loves the relationships that they have with one another. Whenever you see them in interviews or on stage, they are always joking around with each other, showing the true friendship they all share. She really admires their passion for music and playing live shows and loves the connection they have with their fans. Teagan’s favorite 5SOS song is Ghost of You. She would like to thank 5SOS for everything they have done for her. Their music has helped her and her friends so much, more than you can ever think is possible. Through 5SOS, Teagan has met some of her best friends at their shows. She is super excited to see them back on tour next year and for new music! Teagan hopes they are all doing well and have enjoyed their time off.
