Publisher & Co-Founder jolie@baskmagazine.com
The Fall 2013 issue of bask Magazine marks a milestone— it has reached its third year as a quarterly publication. This time calls for a moment of reflection and a moment to give thanks. We set out to capture the hearts of our readers, to be of value to them, and to be a publication to look forward to— today we are there. Although I only have one job title as Publisher, I still find myself juggling many duties and playing many roles—from selling ads for bask to planning large-scale events, intimate dinner parties, and supervising those who strive to bring you an engaging product. It has always been a job that I view as a privilege and a responsibility. Yet, after three years, it still feels like Christmas morning every time a new issue arrives from the printer. We eagerly tear open the boxes to see the finished product and admire all the hard work that went into the issue before delivering it to our readers. Even more rewarding is being able to meet our readers and hear their thoughts about the magazine. It’s a great feeling when readers email us telling us how much they love the magazine or comment on an article they just read. It’s also incredibly fulfilling to be able to walk into a store or café and see people reading and enjoying our magazine. Our jobs here at bask will continue to get more challenging, and more rewarding as we continue to deliver the best content in our print editions, monthly tablet editions, and social media mediums.

In this issue, our editorial highlights the best of fall style, travel, and dining. Our travel pages explore exotic destinations like Ecuador and the Maldives, while other features on the Resort at Pelican Hill and the historic Mission Inn highlight the hidden beauties of Southern California. Our style pages showcase all the upcoming fall trends along with a stunning fashion shoot featuring the elegant, sophisticated side of fall fashion among the historic setting of the Mission Inn. Our three-year anniversary issue is ultimately a celebration of you, our readers. We want to thank you for being a fan of bask Magazine and for commenting on our stories through email or online. Without your participation we could not have reached this milestone. If you have any feedback or ideas, no matter how big or small, we would love to hear from you, even if it’s just quick line or two giving us your thoughts. As you flip through the pages of our Fall issue, please enjoy our new luxury size and format. Thanks for giving us a great three years and here’s to many more to come! Cheers! Jolie Adams

Jet Set Memories I went to Paris with my dad for Christmas and we decided to go to the top of the Eiffel Tower at night. Needless to say, it was freezing and incredibly windy. But when I looked out, the whole city was lit up with millions of lights that seemed to go on for miles; it was absolutely breathtaking. Say It Again “The most important thing is to enjoy your life—to be happy—it’s all that matters.” – Audrey Hepburn. I always tend to get caught up with whatever I’m doing at the moment and this quote constantly reminds me to just take a step back and do something I truly enjoy—to embrace and love life.
2 Virginia Fay writer
Say It Again It would be impossible to pick just one favorite quote, but one I’ve especially loved lately is: “Live in the sunshine, swim the sea, drink the wild air’s salubrity.” –Ralph Waldo Emerson Indulge Yourself I’m a sucker for anything chocolate. If you leave me alone with a Toblerone bar, you can guarantee it’ll be gone when you get back. And cookie dough...you’ll rarely find my refrigerator without a fresh batch

of cookie dough, and I’ve been known to devour a fair amount before any turn into cookies. 3 Robert Palmer writer
Fall Favorites I have come to love Juliette Kitchen and Bar in Newport—in the former space of Traditions by Pascal. John Hughes and Hyun-Sook Chung, the husband and wife duo who used to own and run Orange’s Filling Station, created this culinary gem in Newport last year with a fresh, farm-to-market menu created by the very talented Executive Chef, Daniel Hyatt. The adjacent wine store allows them to offer a wide and eclectic wine menu (including a large number of great wines by the glass) to complement the hipster/casual design and fantastic food.
4 Melinda Serra writer
Timeless Treasures Timeless treasures have a quality and value that surpass their intrinsic worth. A beautiful antique that is classic in style and has been handed down through generations is timeless in style and a coveted family treasure. A beautiful lacquered box from somewhere else in the world, that was hand carried back by a good friend, is a small
treasure that will withstand the ages. Being an interior decorator and stylist, I feel that timeless treasures, no matter how big or small add warmth, personality, and depth to a home that cannot otherwise be found. 5 Joel Perham writer
Say It Again “Develop your eccentricities while you are young. That way, when you get old, people won’t think you’re going gaga.” –David Ogilvy Indulge Yourself Fast cars. 6 Jenny Peters writer Visions of Ecuador Moments of my life in Quito, Ecuador, are the first memories I have. I lived there when I was just a preschool toddler, so when I returned many years later, I wondered what it would evoke. As I walked down the narrow streets of the city’s beautiful historic center, I spotted a tiny old woman dressed completely in black. And suddenly I was transported back to my youth and memories of the Ecuadorian grandmother who watched over me as I played in the walled garden of our home there, along with her own grandchildren. It was as if I had never left.

7 Debbie Lavdas writer Say It Again A friend once told me, “Go where people love what you do.” These are words that I’ve never forgotten, and they’ve made my career choices much easier and my lifestyle more enjoyable. Jet Set Memories I always loved zipping off to beautiful Vancouver; the short plane ride was a breeze. I did a lot of TV commercial shoots in Vancouver and stayed many nights at the Opus. I enjoyed walks around the city streets in the morning and being amongst the energy at night, the city always felt alive. There’s nothing like Vancouver’s Cherry Blossom trees in early spring, and the rain was so refreshing.
8 Jenn Thornton writer Everyday Essentials At the risk of being predictable, it’s coffee, enjoyed in the quiet of my garden at daybreak. I also cannot live without cuddles from my very spoiled kitties, Sassy and Miko and, most especially, “I love you!” from my daughter on her way to cooler pastures as she flies out the door. And time to read—even five minutes is truly life-giving. Memorable Moments It would have to be just yesterday, when my 91-year-old grandma called “for no other reason than just to say hi.” But what makes it memorable is that my hero in life thinks 20
baskmagazine.com
of me as fondly and as often as I think of her— something to really cherish as the years tick by.
9 Heather Fish writer The Many Layers of Fall In Orange County it’s all about the layers: the tissue-weight tee under the cashmere cardigan, or sharp androgynous blazer paired with the perfect-fitting leather legging, under the trench or knotted-wool coat. It’s an on-again, off-again, “magic-trick” of sorts. Our days begin with the chill-to-the-bone cold, then the sun warms things up, and as sunset arrives, so drops the temperature. With a little preparation and thought, one can utilize their fall wardrobe to its fullest potential and delight in the days’ fickle nature. I do. 10 Kirsten Prosser designer Memorable Moments Filming for the “Danske Hollywoodfruer” show. It was a reality show based on four Danish women living the “Hollywood” lifestyle; it was so much fun filming a reality show. Also, the birth of my two beautiful daughters, Trine and Jessica. We are such good friends and I cherish our time together. Discovering Denmark If you’re ever in Denmark, Copenhagen is a must-see city to visit. First, you must visit Tivoli Gardens. It’s an amusement park, but European style, and they always have amazing
concerts and events. Copenhagen is a walking city and most people travel by foot or bike, and what could be more fun than sitting in one of the coolest cafes to people watch at Café Victor? 11 Samantha Matteson designer Fall Favorites One trend I feel strongly about is the light coat. I think it is going to be a key item for fall. It can be worn with a slim pant or skirt and high boots. I also like what they are calling “the big, gutsy pullover in jersey or woven fabrics.” It’s like a sweatshirt and can replace a jacket. My go-to shoe: wedges are fantastic for a long day. They are so comfortable but still very chic and feminine! My favorites are my YSL’s. Another good essential is a good bag that fits all of my belongings for my busy schedule: computer, etc. I am currently into my Louis Vuitton MM Jumbo Tote. 12 John Watkins photographer Live and Learn I gravitated towards the natural lifestyle because it exemplified people looking so healthy and happy and that is the side of life that turns me on most. Iconic Inspirations I became inspired by early trips to Mexico (Baja California) with my parents as a young kid to very remote areas where we kept a trailer on the beach…sunsets and very pretty light captured me.

So, two drag queens and a transsexual get on a run-down old bus…No, this is not a bad joke; it’s the basis for the popular 1994 film, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, now a popular stage production rolling into the Segerstrom Center for the Arts. Our trio sets off on a trip to the Australian Outback when they are invited to perform their drag show in a resort in the middle of nowhere. With disco tunes from Madonna, Cyndi Lauper, and Donna Summer, bizarre drag queen outfits (a bit redundant, I know), and over-the-top makeup and costumes, these divas provide one entertaining ride while at the same time telling a story of friendship, family, and tolerance. Featuring over 500 2011 Tony award-winning costumes, the Hollywood Reporter calls Priscilla “funny and fabulous! Joyous entertainment with eyepopping visuals and unexpected heart!”

Winsome Words Fall brings with it the typical flurry of fashion along with a brief interlude to start planning for the holidays, and, one hopes, a moment or two for a quiet second with a good book. These volumes will assist with all of the aforementioned, from a text that juxtaposes Christian Dior with his Impressionist inspiration, to elegant party planning pointers and the richest holiday recipes you may ever taste, to historical tomes focusing on the life and times of auteur Wes Anderson and former presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft alike.
1
FASHION MUSE by Debra N. Mancoff | Personal style is often influenced by the tastemakers of our time, and fashion design is subject to similar influence. Pairings of designers and their muses have long fascinated anyone interested in the creative process, and this volume sheds light on couplings from Hubert de Givenchy and Audrey Hepburn to Yves Saint Laurent and painter Mondrian to self-inspired Coco Chanel, and more. With photographs and illustrations spanning the past two centuries and enlightening text from art historian Debra N. Mancoff, this is a can’t-miss style tome.

3 DIOR IMPRESSIONS by Florence Muller, Philippe Thiebaut, Farid Chenoune, Barbara Jeauffroy-Mairet, and Brigitte Richart | Hailing from Granville, Normandy, Christian Dior was brought up in the same setting that inspired some of Impressionism’s greatest artists, from Monet to Degas. Trace this inspiration through entrancing photographs of Dior styles juxtaposed with mesmerizing Impressionist works that make it impossible to miss the way Dior captured the essence of Impressionism in wearable form.

Most recently known for Moonrise Kingdom, Anderson is also the auteur of cult favorites such as The Royal Tenenbaums, Rushmore, and more. This book will lead you through Anderson’s filmography with never-before-seen photos and artwork woven together by award-winning critic Matt Zoller Seitz’s dialogue with Anderson.

An artist by trade, Susannah Tisue founded her New York-based ceramics studio in 2006 to bring together her love of painting, printmaking, and firing in wheel thrown, high-fired pieces illustrated with scenes inspired by both her current urban setting and Midwestern beginnings. Because they’re thrown thick, the pieces are built to last, and won’t require wasteful replacement for years to come.
LIVING JUICE
While working as a sculptor in New York City, founder Jamie Jensen was introduced to juice cleansing, and instantly fell in love with the newfound energy, restful sleep, and lack of bloating and craving she discovered as a result. When she relocated back to Laguna Beach, she was surprised to discover there were no such juices available, and quickly set out to make them herself, to her own exacting specifications. Living Juice prides itself on using the highest standard of raw, organic, cold-pressed ingredients, all of which culminates to mean that the juices are equally good for your body and the earth. Using raw, rather than processed, ingredients yields a product that is much easier to digest. Organic farming, meanwhile, not only produces foods that are higher in vitamins and minerals, but also uses less energy, and has notable benefits for the soil, water, and local habitat—not to mention a delicious final product. Launched just a few months ago in the spring of 2013, the SKT flour sack towel line perfectly embodies sustainability merged with art. Printed on 100% cotton repurposed flour sacks sewn in the USA, each one is adorned with one of Susannah’s original illustrations, printed in the Midwest. Ideal to cover a loaf of rising bread, dry dishes, or simply as a tea towel, these towels are a lovely substitute for paper towels in the kitchen, both aesthetically and sustainably. BROOKFARM GENERAL STORE
In Williamsburg, Brooklyn, you’ll find a small shop nestled in the south side of town, with one goal: to emulate the general stores of yore with a modern spin. Something of an oddity in today’s world, general stores were once commonplace, and Brookfarm brings that tradition back to life in New York with an emphasis on high-quality items from around the world all found in one inviting store. Brookfarm carries everything from clothing to home accouterments to their own constantly-evolving line Tourne, all available in the store and online. Two such items are these Whiskey Rocks and Stainless Steel Straws, the perfect complement to a rich autumnal cocktail. The Swedish-made soapstone whiskey rocks will keep your drink chilled without diluting it and wasting the water used for ice, and the steel straws will not only liven up your drink, but also cut down on the harmful plastic used in traditional disposable straws. When trees are ravaged by a fatal disease, it’s hard to imagine an upside for the environment. But the minds behind Bad Beetle did just that. When the deadly mountain pine beetle infested 10,000 trees on their Montana ranchland, they took the opportunity to create stunning, one-of-akind Apple accessories rather than allow the trees to go to waste. The adult beetles carry blue-stain fungus into the tree. Though this is what ultimately kills the tree, stopping its circulation of water and nutrients, it also stains the outer wood a bluish-silver, giving it the distinctive appearance that makes these accessories so eye-catching. From MacBook cases to iPhone replacement backs to iPad stands (which also use reclaimed cork), no two pieces are exactly alike, and each has a laserengraved beetle emblem to denote its origin. A spick-and-span house is one of life’s greatest joys, but chemicalladen cleaning products with their accompanying stark, hospitallike scents make the actual cleaning a task to be avoided. Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day has taken a stand against such products and the harmful chemicals that they’re made of with a line of home products that “smell like a garden and clean like the dickens.” Inspired by Mrs. Thelma A. Meyer, an environmentalist gardener, all Clean Day products are made of plant-based ingredients and essential oils. Totally free of chlorine bleach, ammonia, phosphates, and other typical cleaning chemicals, Clean Day instead focuses on using ingredients from renewable plant resources such as coconut, palm, or olive whenever possible. In the new Sunflower line, you’ll find added extras like naturally degreasing soap bark extract in the dish soap, vegetable protein extract to remove odors naturally in the countertop spray, and, of course, natural essential oils including orange peel, clove leaf, and rosewood for the fresh sunflower scent. The Sunflower collection includes liquid hand and dish soaps, all-purpose cleaner, countertop spray, laundry detergent, and fabric softener. MrsMeyers.com

Inspired by the Scandinavian tradition of “lördagsgodis,” or “Saturday sweets,” wherein children are allowed to purchase their favorite “smågodis,” or “little candies,” to create their own perfect candy bags each week, Sockerbit aims to bring the same joy to America. The name literally means “sugar cube” and denotes one of their popular candies, a white-cubed marshmallow that inspired the store’s overall design. Based in New York City, stepping into the store is an immediate vision of simple sweetness—the array of colors, shapes, and, most importantly, flavors of candies are the main focus in an otherwise wide-open, inviting space. As an added bonus, each delicious sweet is made with high quality ingredients that are largely free of transfats and genetically modified ingredients, and are colored naturally. Spread the fun with personalized arrangements created by Sockerbit with a special gift, gift basket, and corporate favors, or bring a Sockerbit display to your party to allow your guests to create their own candy bags for a splash of Scandinavia they’ll never forget. GOATMILK KIDWARE
Wanting the best for your children is only natural, but it’s surprising how many children’s clothiers don’t take that into account when manufacturing apparel, especially those closest to our skin. Inspired by the high-quality, classic underwear cofounder Tania Vargas remembered from her youth in Spain, she collaborated with a friend and colleague from her time in the advertising industry to replicate the feel of these basics in their own brand. And so Goatmilk was born: a company with total dedication to combining the aesthetic of the Spanish children’s underthings they loved with their own green-mindedness to create 100% organic cotton kids’ tees, tanks, underwear, and thermals. Ensuring that your children are wrapped in only natural materials, from onesies for infants to the softest shorts for toddlers, shows a commitment to the comfort and wellbeing of not only your little ones, but the planet as well. paradise
The island life—waves crashing along the shore, clear blue skies, and not a care in the world. Tommy Bahama Home brings that sense of relaxed island living to their casual-yet-elegant furniture collections, creating a personal oasis for any home.
T
ommy Bahama Home opened its doors at Fashion Island in September 2012. The opening heralded a new frontier for the brand, best known for its clothing, as it allowed them to showcase their unique and sophisticated furniture collections in a formal showroom. Fashion Island also proved to be an ideal location for the home store with its indoor and outdoor setting, view of the Pacific Ocean, and casual atmosphere—all of which embody Tommy Bahama’s mantra of “Relax in Style.” Tommy Bahama Home holds true to the principle that interior design is an expression of personal style. Each guest is able to create their own version of an island paradise with the large selection of designs Tommy Bahama has to choose from.
ITG (Tommy)
Tommy Bahama Home draws inspiration for its unique and eclectic designs from both exotic locations and Southern California. The store creates relaxed island-inspired furniture and adds authenticity to its designs with unique patterns, vibrant colors, and natural materials from exotic locations. The results of this can be seen in collections that derive their style from the British West Indies, the Safari, and the Island Caribbean. Even the materials used for the furniture have their roots in the authentic everyday island life of these locations.
However, one does not always have to travel far from home to gain inspiration for unique design. Tommy Bahama Home embraced that principle by creating a lifestyle store that supports the local community and features one-of-a-kind designs by California artists. Each furniture collection combines these exotic designs with the casual elegance of the Tommy Bahama brand, creating an enduring style with renowned quality. The indoor collections bring the sophisticated side of relaxed island living into the home. The Ocean Club Collection embodies the island-chic look of Tommy Bahama with styles deriving from the islands of the Pacific Rim. Natural materials such as woven rattan, bamboo, and sea glass give the collection an authentic island look and a one-of-a-kind design. The outdoor collections combine the refined style of Tommy Bahama with durable materials forming an outdoor oasis that can last through any weather. The Ocean Club Outdoor Collection has its design roots in the South Pacific and creates a cultural island oasis with the east-meets-west styling of its two lifestyles—Resort and Pacific. Tommy Bahama also carries a home décor collection that features some unique and unexpected items such as fire pits, longboards, and eclectic table lamps that add an extra touch of paradise to the home. If jetting off to a remote island isn’t a possibility, Tommy Bahama Home has everything needed to create a personalized island paradise at home.

Color Coda Pal + Smith’s Melissa Palazzo paints the town. When asked to show her true colors, Melissa Palazzo—co-founder, creative director, and principal designer of upscale interior design and furniture company Pal + Smith—need only point to one of the high-profile projects bearing her signature use of pigment. These judicious splashes of saturation appear in both past commissions and current undertakings in Dana Point, Santa Barbara, and Lake Tahoe. Boldly emblazoning her way to the top of her field, the Newport Beach stylemaker counts among her accomplishments an NYU arts and design education, noted collaborations, and a long list of luminary clients. Now, coinciding with the launch of Pal + Smith Home, the firm’s new luxury home flipping division, Palazzo reveals her most personal project to date: the de rigueur design of her new home. Flaunting European flair contemporized for an au courant sense of chic, the interiors typify Palazzo’s design decree to create spaces that are “timeless yet savvy, sophisticated but still fresh.” 36

What Melissa Loves... Cleopatra: A Life by Stacy Schiff, $13, BN.com
Here, Palazzo talks about her interior motives—and lifestyle essentials.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW HOME. The theme is black, gray, and white with pops of color. I used a ton of antique lighting with contemporary furnishings and, of course, my signature white walls. It is not lacking in drama. I cannot resist a beautiful silk damask, so the all-glass entry has a 14-foot panel of just that. HOW DO YOU APPROACH DESIGN? By incorporating fashion and art, as well as form and function. Beautiful materials and textiles are layers that constantly evolve with different tastes and styles. My job is to understand what moves people—how they live and what makes them fall in love with a space. My favorite homes always have a layer of sophisticated drama and an element of surprise.

WHAT INTERIOR TRENDS ARE YOU SEEING FOR FALL? All types! There’s an abundance of saturated color, bold prints, patterns, metallic, and exotic leathers. I love mixing finishes so it is nice to see more gold accents in lighting and fixtures. And I have a slight addiction to wall coverings—Cole and Son, Designers Guild, and Jim Thompson are my favorites. ARE YOU A BIG BELIEVER IN TRENDS? Yes, but I don’t always follow them. I encourage clients to keep their foundation palettes and styles timeless. It is easy to switch out accent pillows or accessories, less so for major pieces. Trends can date a home. I do believe in design movements that span over time versus trends. HOW DOES SOCAL INFORM YOUR WORK? Southern Californians have a carefree spirit. It is impossible to escape what makes our area unique—sunshine and pretty beaches. We spend so much time outside, it is important to address our interior spaces with the function of indoor/outdoor living. WHAT ELSE INSPIRES YOU? Fashion, art, music, and literature; a trip to Versailles or Old Orange...I absorb my surroundings and the things that I find moving or passionate influence my work greatly. As a designer it is important to be constantly evolving; keeping it fresh is a must!

A Family Affair at the Mission Inn Collectively run by a husband, wife, and daughter trio, Duane Roberts, Kelly Roberts, and Casey Reinhardt have revitalized the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa while striving to keep its historic spirit alive. The family opens up about their additions to the company, including Kelly’s Spa, Casey’s Cupcakes, and the beloved annual Festival of Lights, as well as how their individual entrepreneurial spirits come together to form a well-oiled business team.
Family @ work
A beauty and boutique visionary, a confectioner extraordinaire, and a businessman with a soft spot for the holiday season—Kelly Roberts, Casey Reinhardt, and Duane Roberts, respectively, fulfills these roles and more as a family working both in tandem and individually on the AAA Four Diamond Historic Mission Inn Hotel & Spa.
Originally built in 1876 as a two-story adobe guesthouse, the now overwhelmingly elegant hotel has undergone much iteration since its humble beginnings. Steeped in history (it’s hosted multiple presidents, for instance) as well as beauty, it’s hard to imagine Riverside without this stately compound inhabiting an entire city block today. But before Duane Roberts came on the scene in 1992, the building was unoccupied and considered too big of a risk for many investors to commit to reviving it. Duane, a Riverside native, saw the hotel for its potential: “Growing up in Riverside, I often visited The Mission Inn, a California Historical Landmark, with my mother and I’ve always held it close to my heart. When the hotel fell into despair, I felt compelled to save the property from destruction because to me, and the residents of Riverside, the Inn is more than just a building—it’s fond memories, an architectural wonder, a piece of history, and a beloved landmark. It is part of our family and not just real estate…Saving the Inn felt like the right thing to do for the community.”
And save the Inn he did. With business acumen acquired over years of entrepreneurship—he developed the largest frozen Mexican food manufacturer in the world, and created and continues to chair the Entrepreneurial Corporate Group, which encompasses a range of investments—Duane has brought the Inn to a new level of splendor and success. Reopening the Inn just six days after purchasing it, with the help of the Friends of The Mission Inn volunteers, the first priority in bringing the Inn 40

back to life, Duane says, was to restore the property to its “original grandeur” by renovating all 238 guestrooms while adding modern luxuries. In order to maintain the spirit of the Inn, it was necessary to preserve many of the facets that make the property such a unique piece of history. “The architectural elements and the priceless art collection remain a large part of the historic Inn. Outside the Presidential Lounge sits a rather large and unique chair that Frank Miller had commissioned for President Taft before his visit to the Inn,” Duane says. The Inn also continues to be home to more than 400 original Frank Miller bells, as well as an 18th century 18 karat gold leafed Rayas altar and original Tiffany stained-glass windows in the hotel’s St. Francis of Assisi Chapel. Of course, these decisions weren’t reached by Duane alone—his wife, Kelly Roberts, serves as the Chief Operating Officer for The Historic Mission Inn Corporation, and has taken a large hand in revitalizing the Inn with additions including Kelly’s Spa and Kelly’s Boutique. As Duane says, “Kelly is always updating and beautifying every aspect of the historic Inn,” which can be seen throughout the welcoming aesthetics and ambiance of the hotel and spa. Introduced in 2004, Kelly’s Spa was created as “a sanctuary and escape for our guests—a place to indulge in luxurious treatments, relax, and be pampered. I was inspired by the rich history of the Inn to create a destination spa, bridging the gap between the hotel’s grand Spanish mission architecture and the serene, sophisticated spaces of a Tuscan-inspired wellness oasis,” explains Kelly.
Continuing in the entrepreneurial spirit of the family, Kelly didn’t stop at launching a fresh spa and boutique at the Inn, she also created her own line of botanical skincare used in the spa and sold exclusively at the boutique and CONTINUED ON PAGE 131 Mission Inn website.

Checking Off Your Bucket List in Ecuador What to do first? That’s the question that faces any traveler heading to Ecuador, that South American equatorial destination that is seriously jam-packed with bucket list experiences.
T
bask beyond | by jenny peters
There’s the city of Quito, tucked into a narrow valley
So plan to take two weeks to see this enchanting country, devoting one to the mainland and the other to cruising around the Galápagos. Fly into Quito’s new airport (UIO) on LAN, United, or American Airlines, going through Lima, Houston, or Miami from LAX or SAN (no nonstops from SoCal, unfortunately). We used Metropolitan Touring for our visit; that venerable luxury travel company/hotelier has been welcoming visitors in Ecuador for 60 years. They will take care of all your needs, from providing airport transfers, posh accommodations, and expert guides to even whisking your bags into check-in without your lifting a finger. Metropolitan-Touring.com Start out in Quito at Casa Gangotena, the gorgeous mansion-turned-boutique-hotel that sits right on Plaza San Fernando in the heart of the Centro Histórico. It’s a lavishly beautiful home base for your adventure into the place ruled first by the Incans and later the Spanish. CasaGangotena.com

between huge volcanoes, the very first place deemed worthy of the UNESCO “World Heritage Centre” designation (in 1973) as they deemed it “an outstanding example of the Baroque school of Quito, a fusion of European and indigenous art.” There are the incredible cloud rain forests, considered the richest hotspot of biodiversity on the planet, and there are the famed Galápagos Islands, that magical place teeming with unique species on both land and sea. They, too, are a World Heritage site—and every nature lover’s dream come true.
Beyond (Ecuador)
Take a fascinating walking tour with a Metropolitan guide, or simply wander the nearby streets on your own. Either way, look into a few of the countless Christian churches that seem to be on every corner. El San Francisco (the first, completed in 1604) is fascinating, where visages of Ecuador’s indigenous peoples are juxtaposed with more European-looking Christian icons, while the unexpected pink-hued interior of La Merced will cause a smile, and the blinged-out golden edifice that is La Campañia will make you blink in awe (it is the one with the huge Moorish domes). Look into the tiny shops that line the side streets to find every foodstuff imaginable (and a piñata or twenty as well); shop at Homero Ortega for refined handwoven Panama hats (which always originated in Ecuador); and return to Casa Gangotena for Chef Andrés Dávila’s divine Pernil Quiteño (pork) sandwich or a bowl of classic Locro Quiteño (potato) soup. See the wonderful pre-Columbian collection at the Casa del Alabado Museum, soak up history at the Museo de la Ciudad, and make the very worthwhile trek to the north of town to the Capilla del Hombre (Chapel of the Man), where famed local artist Guayasamin’s breathtaking works are on display. Stop for a chic dinner on your way home at Zazu, one of the city’s best, serving up a classy fusion of South American flavors. Once you’ve gotten your fill of the city, move on to Mashpi Lodge, Metropolitan’s eco hotel in the heart of the cloud forest. The ride over the Andes toward this protected reserve in the northwest can be a bumpy one, so be prepared, but the views are spectacular; it also includes fascinating stops at the Equatorial Marker (put your feet in both hemispheres!) and Tulipe, the excavated sacred area where the Yumbo tribe flourished back in A.D. 800. MashpiLodge.com 46

Mashpi itself is a stunning glass-and-steel lodge, nestled deep in the cloud forest. Sitting within the Mashpi Rainforest Biodiversity Reserve, 2,891 acres of land owned and protected by Metropolitan and 45,500 more designated “a natural protected area” by the state, it is the only structure for miles around. Every room has breathtaking floor-to-ceiling windows that envelop you in the rain forest; don’t be surprised if a brightly hued toucan flies past as you gaze at your own private view. There are birds everywhere—Ecuador boasts 1,800 different species—as well as frogs, butterflies, monkeys, sloths, reptiles, and even pumas. You probably won’t be lucky enough to see a puma, but pull on your rubber boots (the lodge supplies all the gear you need) and head out with your expert guides and you’re sure to see a riot of animal life, as well as breathtaking orchids, massive trees, giant ferns, and welcoming waterfalls (you can jump right into the cool, clear waters). Visit the butterfly habitat, where the lodge’s resident biologist carries out research and the beautiful creatures will land right on your head, then spend some time at the hummingbird viewpoint before defying gravity on the Sky Bike as you pedal across a massive gorge drinking in the vistas of the canopy in every direction. It’s zip lining taken to a whole new level—and an exhilarating life experience! If you love nature, it’s hard to come down out of the clouds, but since the Galápagos Islands await, you’ll feel your heartbeat quicken as you move on. Take a quick flight from Quito to Guayaquil, and on to Baltra airport and then Santa Cruz Island, where you’ll board one of Metropolitan’s luxury yachts—the Isabella II, Santa Cruz, or La Pinta. We chose the 48-passenger La Pinta, boarding after a visit to El Chato Reserve, where giant tortoises dot the arid landscape. Seeing them lumbering along lets you know you’ve truly arrived in the place Charles Darwin called “a little world within itself.”

Each island we visit boasts its own particular fascination.None have human habitation, but all simply teem with exotic species, from little Galápagos penguins to huge frigatebirds, those pirates of the sky who steal from the blue-footed boobies and swallow-tailed gulls nearby. Listen for the outraged screams of the theft victims, as they set up a huge hue and cry. Bright red crabs crawl across the sands, sea turtles peek up out of the sea, and even hammerhead sharks meander by. Keep your eyes open for flamingoes, finches, doves, albatross, tiny owls, large iguanas, migrating whales, dolphins, manta rays, and huge schools of tropical fish, for every day brings a new unique island landscape and more chances to hike, swim, kayak alongside, and easily interact with some of the most fascinating critters on the planet. (But of course there is a hands-off policy to all: look and photograph, but do not touch!)
photo: Jenny Peters
As the lovely La Pinta sets off (you can book a 3-, 4-, or 7-night cruise on any of the ships), the expert on-board naturalist guides give us a taste of what to expect in the coming days: everything from hikes across seemingly barren black-lava landscapes (they’re not) to pristine beach visits where sea lions lounge nearby and happily joined us as we snorkeled in the clear, cool water.
Moving on and off the well-appointed ship is a breeze, as the knowledgeable naturalists and other helpful staff cater to every guest’s level of fitness and physical ability. But being fit certainly helps in exploring the Galápagos Islands, as there are breathtaking vistas to be seen by climbing high up, underwater encounters that require basic swimming skills, and rocky landscapes to scamper across. Sunsets to die for, a night sky brilliantly lit with the Milky Way, delicious meals, and a convivial atmosphere make the evenings as much fun as the days on La Pinta, but with morning wake-up calls at 7 a.m., early to bed is the norm for this adventure-filled week.

Al Barakat at Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru THE MALDIVIAN CULTURE The Maldives is made up of 1,190 islands and 26 atolls in the heart of the Indian Ocean. The islands are known for their cultural diversity, which can be seen in the Southeast Asian, African, and Arabic influences of the art, music, and food. However, the Maldives is still a primarily Muslim country and the call to prayer can be heard five times a day—even in the most remote locations. The Maldivian natives are also known for their genuine sense of hospitality, making guests immediately feel like a part of the island family. GETTING AROUND THE MALDIVES Of the 200 inhabited Maldivian islands, about 90 of them are leased for private use by resorts. All of the resorts are easily accessible by seaplane or boat from the main island of Malé, where the international airport is located. Upon arriving on the islands, guests can expect to be greeted with a traditional Maldivian Boduberu. This welcoming ceremony includes drumming, dancing, and singing by Maldivian natives dressed in traditional attire and provides the perfect beginning for a complete immersion into island life.

WHERE TO STAY The Four Seasons Resort at Kuda Huraa is located on a small garden island and designed in the style of a traditional Maldivian village. The resort’s 96 unique accommodations take full advantage of the beauty of both the gardens and seaside location of the island. The beachfront bungalows and villas each have a private lounge area, their own pool, and a walkway leading to the beach, while the tropical gardens surrounding these accommodations make guests feel like they have just stepped out of their room and into a private island oasis. The water bungalows overlook the lagoon and feature private decks and spacious rooms with breathtaking views of the lagoon. The water suites at the Four Seasons Kuda Huraa provide a truly unique living experience for guests. Set right above the lagoon, these rooms have wrap-around views of the ocean and combine both indoor and outdoor living with spacious private sundecks, openair showers, and steps leading to the lagoon. The restaurants at the Four Seasons Kuda Huraa create a unique dining experience for guests, serving fine international cuisines in venues with breathtaking views of the island. The Reef Club serves homemade Italian cuisine on a secluded part of the island where guests can enjoy their meal on a spacious deck while watching reef sharks swim in the lagoon below. The resort’s other restaurant, Baraabaru, serves fine Indian cuisine in its Tandoor Bar or on a torch-lit deck that extends over the sea. Other dining options include Café Huraa, which serves Western, Asian, and Maldivian Cuisine, and the Kandu Grill located on an open kitchen pavilion. The Four Seasons Resort at Landaa Giraavaru is deep in the heart of a jungle island in the remote Baa Atoll UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. The resort, designed by Sri Lankan architect Murad Ismail, seems to almost be part of the jungle with its high thatched roofs, secluded gardens, and coral walls. Each entryway into the resort’s 102 bungalows and villas has a private turquoise gate surrounded by tropical blooms that provides guests a pathway into a private jungle oasis. The beach bungalows and villas each have their own pool, a private garden, and a lounge area with an undholi—a traditional Maldivian swing—to relax in. The unique over-the-water villas are perched above the lagoon and feature an outdoor living space from which to enjoy undisturbed ocean views. The resort also offers twobedroom land and ocean suites, which have an open-air living and dining area and a wooden walkway that leads to two ocean-based, en-suite sleep pavilions. 52

The resort offers a wide variety of restaurants all serving fine international cuisine on the serene beach setting of the island. The Fuego Grill serves fresh catch of the day and prime cuts directly on the beach with tables and chairs nestled into the sand, providing guests with a breathtaking view of the ocean. Dining at Al Barakat is a truly cultural experience. The restaurant serves traditional Lebanese and Moroccan cuisine on two rooftop terraces overlooking the lagoon with a shisha bar below where guests can enjoy exotic cocktails before or after dinner. Other dining options include the Blu Restaurant and Bar, which serves fine Italian cuisine and Café Landaa, which serves a wide variety of international cuisines. The Seabar provides guests with a one-of-a-kind dining experience. The restaurant sits on an uncovered dock jutting out over the sea where guests can enjoy cocktails and listen to music while lounging on hammocks that provide a spectacular view of the shark-filled lagoon. The Four Seasons also offers guests the opportunity to stay on its sea-based resort, The Four Seasons Explorer. This luxury cruise ship sails between Kuda Huraa and Landaa Giraavaru and is the ideal live-aboard for the experienced diver seeking to explore uncharted waters. The Explorer offers guests a wide variety of other waterbased activities such as snorkeling, surfing, waterskiing, and fishing. It also stays true to the luxury-living philosophy of the Fours Seasons, providing guests with ten spacious staterooms, a restaurant, a fully equipped spa, and an indoor lounge. SCUBA ADVENTURES The Maldives offers world-class diving sites where divers can immerse themselves in the crystal-clear water and discover uncharted sites and exotic sea life. Expeditions include thila diving where divers can view coral formations inhabited by colorful reef fish and wreck diving where they can explore the sunken ruins of the famous Shipyard. However, the main diving attraction in the Maldives is the manta ray and whale shark expeditions, which run from June to October and offer divers an up-close view of these breathtaking creatures.

Whether guests are just trying a single treatment or immersing themselves in one of the spa’s 7-, 14-, or 21-day retreats, the Ayurvedic Spa is a transforming experience. COMMITMENT TO CONSERVATION Although the resorts are located on their own private islands, they still have to lease the land from Maldivian natives. A major part of this agreement is based on the resorts’ commitment to protect the islands’ marine life and sustain their natural beauty. The Four Seasons Kuda Huraa focuses on turtle rehabilitation in their conservation effort. This program is designed to integrate rescued turtles back into their natural habitat using satellite technology to track their migratory habits. The resort also breeds endangered species of fish and seahorses to release into the wild when they are fully grown. The Four Seasons Landaa Giraavaru emphasizes coral rehabilitation in their conservation program, allowing guests to purchase a cage with newly grown coral attached to it. The resort then releases these cages into the surrounding reef and over a three-year period of time, they become vibrant coral structures and a thriving home for many species of endangered fish. The Maldives’ remote location, natural beauty, and colorful cultural life make it the ideal spot for an island getaway.

All-American Road Trip to the America’s Cup A journey to a race as worthy as the America’s Cup, which lays claim to the oldest trophy in international sport and the hardest to win, should be as rewarding as the destination itself. So with the uncommon respites of a lush, tropical land and a retreat of a bygone time where bagpipes play at sunset at a castle on the coast, we made our way to the world’s greatest sailing race to be held in the challenging tides of the City by the Bay.

Departing the quaint sailing community of Newport Beach on a summer’s
Tuesday morning, we had plans to reach the waterfront of San Francisco’s America’s Cup Park on a Saturday. With roughly 450 miles in between, stays at Bacara Resort & Spa in Santa Barbara and The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay would provide welcome coastal resting spots along the way. With one eye on live updates of the America’s Cup, and the other eye on the road, we made our way north. In just a few hours time, the 101 would take us to the Gaviota coast between the Pacific Ocean and Santa Ynez Mountains. Bacara Resort & Spa, tucked away along the bluffs and beaches of Santa Barbara, is a tropical oasis of 78 beachfront acres and two miles of white-sand beaches. The property blends Spanish charm with an island-time ambiance. A walk up terracotta-tread stairs leads to rooms with Mediterranean garden and glistening Pacific Ocean views. There’s much to do while visiting, such as lounging poolside at the tiered pools that lead to the beach. The four-star Spa is something to behold: over 40,000 square feet on three levels. Indulge in a Healing Stone Therapy massage, which blends saturated, silky oils with warm stones that slide over the skin for a dreamy 80 minutes of solitude. Dinner at The Bistro is a lovely way to end a day with sweeping views of the coast and the flavors of Italy. BacaraResort.com After two days at beautiful Bacara, it was onward: five hours north to The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay, approximately 30 minutes from the Americas’s Cup. Upon nearing the resort, the surrounds clearly indicated that this road trip had reached the beauty of the Northern California coast. The dramatic Santa Cruz Mountains and redwood-forested hills drew the eye, and the climate became crisp and refreshingly cool. While the temperature change felt like a Northern state, the views at the resort seemed like another country—some quiet countryside in Scotland perhaps. It’s no wonder The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay is poignantly dubbed the ‘castle on the coast.’
Beyond (America’s)
After we were escorted to Club Level on the 5th floor, we found the perfect time and place to check the status of the Cup. The elegant lounge, with continuous complimentary culinary offerings, top-shelf spirits, and flowing champagne, was the perfect place to settle back with an iPad and catch up on the race. The Ritz-Carlton, Half Moon Bay offers two breathtaking golf courses, horseback riding, the Spa, dining at Navio, and more. But few things compare to the simple choice to settle by the fire pits as the fog rolls in and a bagpiper plays “Amazing Grace” at sunset. RitzCarlton.com/HMB With Saturday upon us, the morning marked the journey onward to The 34th America’s Cup. With the Golden Gate Bridge on the horizon and the sea’s salt in the air, we’d made it to the America’s Cup Park venue (Pier 27/29) to see the teams up close as they crossed the finish line each day. There was a hub of activity with fellow enthusiasts buzzing about to celebrate this legendary competition of the best sailors and fastest boats in a competition that predates even the modern Olympics. It would indeed be a thrill to be at the center of it all, where for the first time in the 162 years of the event, the race would be sailed in the confines of the San Francisco Bay, rather than miles offshore. And it was the first time all competitors would race wing sail catamarans, known as the “50 mph flying boats.” Four teams competed: ORACLE TEAM USA, Artemis Racing (who sadly lost Andrew Simpson on May 9th as the “Big Red” capsized and broke apart during a practice session), Emirates Team New Zealand, and Luna Rossa Challenge. We took a road trip as memorable as the journey’s end. May the winds of destiny carry you to a competition as time-honored as The Cup. AmericasCup.com

Escape to
ITALY
The Resort at Pelican Hill brings Italy’s finest to Southern California.
Imagine a place where the verdant landscapes and
grand architecture of classical Italy meet the elegant and serene beauty of the Southern California coast. The Resort at Pelican Hill embodies that ideal place with its Italian Renaissance-inspired architecture, Mediterranean landscaping, authentic cuisine, and impeccable service. The Resort at Pelican Hill derived its inspiration from the rich historical traditions of Renaissance Italy and brought them to Newport Coast, creating a perfect marriage between the classical Mediterranean lifestyle and the laid-back elegance of Southern California.
Cabana Dining at the Coliseum Pool
The architecture at Pelican Hill found its roots in Renaissance Italy and in the work of one particular architect—Andrea Palladio, a genius of his time. The Resort even shares its first birthday with Palladio’s 500th, having opened its doors in November 2008. Palladio was a quintessential Renaissance man and master architect who spent most of his youth as a stonemason. As a young man, Palladio went to visit Rome where he found life-changing beauty and inspiration in ancient Greek and Roman architecture. Palladio’s experiences in Rome helped define his distinct and innovative style as well as his architectural philosophy. This philosophy was based on principles that emphasized grand proportions and perfect symmetry working in harmony with nature.
Beyond (Pelican)
The Resort at Pelican Hill adopted Palladio’s architectural principles with classical designs, graceful proportions, and open spaces all working in perfect harmony with the natural beauty of Newport Coast. Palladianinspired structures, such as the domed, Greek-inspired rotunda in the hotel lobby, can be found throughout the resort. The Resort’s main estate is a flawless example of one of Palladio’s most innovative designs, the portico, which was originally used for temples and later modified by Palladio for villas. Next to the main estate is the unmistakable Coliseum Pool. The pool is a perfect circle with over a million hand-cut mosaic tiles that line the bottom and glitter amid the lights of the amphitheater surrounding it. Pelican Hill is also home to a grand Palladian-inspired rotunda that is as distinct as it is breathtaking. Both the rotunda’s location overlooking the Pacific Ocean and its sheer beauty make it an ideal place to hold weddings and other ceremonies. The Resort’s architectural inspiration comes from Palladio’s statement that: “Beauty will derive from a graceful shape and the relationship of the whole to the parts.” This maxim is evident in the way that Pelican Hill’s beauty is comprised of two major parts: the bungalows and the villas. Pelican Hill’s 204 bungalows combine the Palladian-inspired features of loggias, Tuscan columns, and tiled roofs with the comfort and intimacy of a quaint Mediterranean village setting that transports guests straight into the heart of Italy.

The resort’s 128 ocean-view villas are the perfect example of Palladio’s ideal structure, combining the grand with the practical in perfect harmony. The villas also come fully equipped and have a personalized staff, making them a true Mediterranean home away from home.

shape and the relationship of the Beyond (Pelican)
The simple, elegant landscaping of Pelican Hill also has roots in Renaissance Italy. Mature olive and cypress trees line the walkways and courtyards of the resort, creating the image of a seaside Italian village in the heart of Southern California. The Golf Club at Pelican Hill embodies the Palladian ideal of finding harmony with nature. Designed by Tom Fazio, Pelican Hill’s two golf courses—Ocean North and Ocean South— overlook the Pacific Ocean, allowing golfers to enjoy an undisturbed view while playing on the 36-hole championship course. The Golf Club also features a magnificent bridge modeled after an ancient Roman aqueduct that connects the Clubhouse to the courses. The Spa at Pelican Hill is a truly unique and personalized experience. The first sight guests will encounter upon entering the spa is its large Palladian rotunda surrounded by a serene water wall. From there, they will be led into one of the spa’s 22 treatment rooms for individualized care, or head to the Acqua Colonnade to try the herbal steam rooms and soaking tubs.
Pelican Hill also stays true to both its Italian and Southern California roots with its vast array of dining choices. The tastes and smells of Tuscan cooking are brought to Newport Coast at Pelican Hill’s Andrea Ristorante. Under the guidance of chef Luigi Fineo, Andrea adheres to the culinary traditions of Italy with their always fresh, always authentic Italian cuisine. At Andrea, diners can get a taste of Tuscany with the restaurant’s handmade pastas, artisan-style gelato, and imported Italian wine as they watch the sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Available exclusively to Resort guests, Piccolo at the Villa Club offers a globally inspired menu of small plates. Guests can enjoy tapas-style portions of everything from Asian to Italian cuisine in a relaxed atmosphere with a picturesque view of the resort. Other dining options at Pelican Hill include the Caffé and espresso bar, the Pelican Grill at the Golf Club, and the Coliseum Grill. 62

FALL PREVIEW
There is nothing more elegant than the strong statement of black and white mixed with the rich color of oxblood red. But to add a little spice to the mix, the designers threw in a bit of a punk rock vibe via the accessories: studded bags, pointy shoes, and lots of leather. With such distinct accessory trends, it was important for designers to create wares with clean lines and beautiful structure—seemingly setting out to perfect the house’s original design aesthetic with the use of innovative fabrics and modern shapes, all the while remembering the golden rule of fashion: less is more.
A statement piece for certain, this oversized Raw White Quartz ring by The Petra (the Latin word for “stone”) Collection was designed by New York-based designer Kara Ross, who is known for her love of exquisite raw and polished stones. This stark winterwhite stunner will fare nicely dressed up or down. PetraCollection.com

This Halston Heritage ensemble seems to embrace all that is current in fall fashion. POB Tech Home Control Systems for Ultimate Convenience The latest and greatest technology tends to be the most exciting, but also the most overwhelming, especially for anyone not immersed in the tech world. We aim to make the complex concepts simple to bring you the best in home control systems to simplify your life. So relax, enjoy, and let yourself be inspired to go play with the top lighting and shade control systems we’ve rounded up. LIGHTING CONTROL Chances are, you’ve heard of lighting control. It has been around for some time now and has become more common and cost effective recently. But what does it really entail? To many, it just means that you control your lights with something other than a light switch. But what exactly about lighting control would make you want to spend money on it and put it in your home or office? It all comes down to one word: convenience. There are many reasons that lighting control is convenient. First: no matter what kind of lights you have in your house, you can turn them all on or off from one button. What’s not to love about this centralizing convenience? 82
baskmagazine.com
Second: you’re able to create a simple path of lights to simplify everyday life; for example, the route from the garage to your kids’ bedrooms when you take them out of the car. Third: there is no better way to make a good room look great than by setting lighting scenes for specific events. Both everyday events and special occasions can be greatly enriched by having lighting scenes such as “Dining” that dims the overhead lights to low, and brings all the accent lighting to a level that makes your room pleasant to the eye. The scene will also add elegance to the room, and make your furniture and place settings pop. Or, create a “Movie” scene that turns off all lights,

Aside from convenience, lighting control is a great way to save money on your energy bill and light bulbs. Living in Southern California, we pay the highest energy costs in the country, which are only going to increase over time. By using a lighting control system, not only are you creating a more pleasant space, you are also using less energy. Lutron lighting control systems, for instance, accomplish a dimming effect by actually turning the bulbs on and off fast enough to create a soft, constant light. This technique uses much less energy and also extends the life of the light bulbs.
There are many lighting companies that offer similar lighting control systems, such as Vantage, Crestron, Leviton, and Savant, to name just a few, but Lutron offers a few features that make it a standout choice. For instance, they have a part number for every imaginable application and type of light. As LED lighting and fluorescent lights become more popular, it is important to use a product line from a company that is capable of overcoming all of the possible lighting challenges. Another especial perk of Lutron systems is that their lighting control processor (essentially the “brain” of the whole operation) is also capable of controlling motorized shades.
Sonos Mulitplayer
SHADE CONTROL
While many people may not be as familiar with the wonders of shade control as with lighting, similar principles apply. My favorite benefit of shade control is, simply, convenience. Whether you have a large home or a small loft, getting up to move the shades is a pain. As the sun moves throughout the day, you have to constantly adjust the shades to keep harmful light out while maintaining as much natural light and access to views as possible. With shade control, you can program with an “astronomic clock,” which is nothing more than a fancy term for a feature that allows you to enter your exact location to program the shades and lights to respond to exactly when the sun comes up and when it goes down. Now you can have your shades open and close and rise and fall precisely when and how you want, automatically.
POB Tech
There are two main types of shading materials. Sheer shades block UV heat and light while allowing lots of light in. They also keep wandering eyes from seeing in, and allow you to see out clearly, thus maintaining your view. They are also useful in keeping furniture and flooring from being bleached by the sun. The second main type of shades are black outs. These, shockingly enough, block out all the light coming through, removing all ambient light. Another great feature of utilizing a shade system is that it allows you to use both of these types of shades together for a single window or door. This provides the best of both worlds by providing protection from the harmful UV light while still providing light, and ultimate privacy when you want it by blacking out your glass completely. Remember, lighting and shade systems are scalable. You can start with just one room, or go straight to outfitting the whole building. You can control from the wall, through preset programming, or on an app on your smartphone or tablet. By having the app on your device, you can also control your system remotely, from anywhere you have a signal. A final note: lighting and shade control systems aren’t limited simply to the home. Consider amping up the convenience and comfort factor in your office, yacht, and anywhere else you regularly visit to maximize technology’s ability to simplify your life. 84

a weekend of elegance The Dana Point Concours d’Elegance returned for its 31st year as part of the Orange County Collector Car and Motorcycle Weekend. Over 15,000 guests gathered at the oceanfront Monarch Beach Golf Links from June 21 to June 23 to commemorate Southern California’s rich automotive heritage. Guests enjoyed events such as hot rod shows, a reception, and a rally at Camp Pendleton throughout the weekend. Sunday’s marquee event, the Concours d’Elegance, featured a fine art exhibition and nearly
240 collector cars and motorcycles. The highlight of the evening came when the 1933 Packard Convertible Coupe was crowned “Best of Show” and Car Crazy television host Barry Meguiar received the 2013 Automotive Icon Award. The event not only honored Southern California’s automotive history, but also the U.S. Marine Corps with the events and rally at Camp Pendleton all benefitting the Marine Corps charities Semper Fi Fund, MARSOC, and the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

tournament of hope The 2013 Stars and Stripes Tournament combined adventure, entertainment, and philanthropy during their 17th annual fishing, golf, and music festival. Guests traveled to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico from June 27th to June 30th to enjoy two full days of fishing, golfing, zip-lining, quad tours, and spa treatments in a serene location. The live entertainment didn’t disappoint, either! Stars and Stripes renewed their World Class Rocker series featuring former members of Journey, Santana, Boston, Steppenwolf, and Lynyrd
Skynyrd. Not only did the organization seek to create lasting memories for their guests with their event, but also for the members of the many charities it benefits. Known as “The Feel Good Tournament,” Stars and Stripes partnered with four local charities this year, including Orangewood Children’s Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters Orange County, Miracles for Kids, and CASA, Orange County as they continued their ongoing support for Building Baja’s Future and the San Diego Armed Services YMCA.

Dining Bliss
Welcoming people into your home is the most gracious of gestures. Entertaining should not be an endurance test, but an enjoyable time spent with those we cherish. A distinctive table setting with natural elements is as inspiring as it is fresh—and when presented with catered or market gourmet items, it will take pressure off that you weren’t trained at Le Cordon Bleu.

Casual Elegance
These different elements amidst handcrafted dinnerware including textural linen napkins make a charming table setting. Arte Italica dishware can be found at Bliss Home & Design in Corona del Mar. Arte Italica was the first to combine ceramic and pewter and uses the same techniques passed down through generations of skilled artisans. The subtle beading on the dishware combined with the capiz shell placemats by Pearl Dragon adds an unexpected yet elegant feel to the table. 102

Coastal Warmth
Beautifully handmade shell hurricanes made by a local artist set the tone in a coastal vernacular. The warmth of the candles in this neutral setting adds an ethereal quality of luxury. The custom hurricanes were contracted by Bliss Home & Design from Nate Ricketts.
Naturally Inspired
A coral inspired ceramic bowl filled with limes or other fruit, as well as a vase filled with shells from your travels, celebrates simplicity and personal style. The faceted cut candle votive, found exclusively from Neiman Marcus Newport Beach, adds warmth and luxury that surpasses its modest price.

Charmingly Chic
A mingling of chairs, new or vintage, with a setting of distinctive items will characterize your dining experience, making it a personal one. Chairs are exclusively Bliss Home & Design.

Kelly’s daughter, Casey, also shares this pioneering personality, as evidenced by her own addition of Casey’s Cupcakes, a gourmet bakery, to the Inn. This, too, has its roots in family as Casey was taught to bake by her greatgrandmother. Having grown up baking since the age of four, Casey references her lifelong love of confection-creating as a major influence in deciding to open a cupcakery—that has since expanded to five total locations. Even today, “some of the recipes are my great-grandmother’s recipes. I’ve also added my own flair along the way but the foundation of the recipes come from my great-grandmother’s wisdom—light as air, made with lots of love, and using only the freshest, quality ingredients,” explains Casey. Having won Food Network’s Cupcake Wars with a Hollywood Walk of Fame theme, Casey has an eye for glamour as well as a taste for all that’s sweet, which shows in the design of her shops.
“My stores are inspired by a classic Parisian café with a glamorous Hollywood twist. I am always looking for inspiration in my travels, for fun flavor combinations and beautiful decorations to make my cupcakes unlike anybody else’s. Every month, I create a special flavor of the month, which is always themed to the time of year or holiday. For example, in the fall we’ll create seasonal flavors such as Pumpkin Patch and Generous Gingerbread.”

In addition to their collective business-mindedness, the family shares a passion for giving back to the community. Aside from various philanthropic ventures, including Casey’s foundation the Children’s Alliance for the Success and Education of Youth (C.A.S.E.Y.), they make a point of presenting the local community with the annual Festival of Lights each holiday season.
This is a special pet project of Duane’s, whose love of the holidays was born from an early age. He explains, “The idea of Festival of Lights came from my childhood where each Christmas, my family and I would visit the different neighborhoods that were lit up for the holidays. We created Festival of Lights in 1992 to celebrate the reopening of the Inn and it’s since become an annual tradition, a gift my wife Kelly and I give to the community and our guests.” Like the Inn and each family member’s special projects, the Festival has grown immensely: beginning with 250,000 lights and 50 animated characters its first year, you’ll now find over 3.6 million lights and 400 animated characters adorning the hotel the day after Thanksgiving.
“Festival of Lights grows bigger every year but the event remains free as an experience that families can enjoy together, like Disneyland but without the long lines and the cost of tickets…It’s about the children, and it’s a celebration that brings the community closer every year. Festival of Lights is a way for me to give back to the place where I grew up, an opportunity for me to share my childhood love of Christmas with the greater Riverside community and our guests,” says Duane.
The family cites a collective passion for giving back that extends even beyond the Festival of Lights as one of the most important qualities that ties them together as a family of entrepreneurs. They explain together, “It’s important that we leave the earth a better place than when we arrived and that is why our entire family is dedicated to philanthropy. We are all driven, have strong work ethics, are passionate and we love deeply—each other, the communities and organizations we belong to, and those who need our help.”

SPANISH REVIVAL! El Encanto cooks up a uniquely satisfying culinary experience. Let other restaurants dabble in molecular sleight-of-hand and madcap mixology; El Encanto—the iconic Santa Barbara hotel in the full throes of a splashy comeback following a multi-million dollar refurbishment, courtesy of Orient-Express Hotels—remains refreshingly farm-to-fork. Credit the man responsible: executive chef Patrice Martineau, an international arbiter of good taste who comes to the hotel after stints at The Savoy in London and Daniel in New York City. Now, for El Encanto, Martineau is reinvigorating California coastal cuisine with French and Japanese flair. “I am always researching local producers and farmers to make sure that we have the very best of what is available for El Encanto’s kitchen,” says Martineau, whose locavore approach involves just-caught Santa Barbara seafood (uni, abalone, black cod), plus a bounty of freshlypicked ingredients cultivated in a thriving chef ’s garden. Season dictates selection, and though Martineau remains mum on fall’s offerings, autumn crab with cranberry jelly and oven-braised black cod with Santa Barbara lemons and cocoa beans are candidates.
table (el encanto)
Martineau’s menu, meanwhile, pairs perfectly with beverage manager Emre Balli’s world-class wine list, curated to include an array of regional picks. Also in the mix are cocktails—the Charmer (house-infused grapefruit vodka, St. Germain elderflower, and fresh lime juice) is a signature, while the Encanto Tea (American Harvest Organic Vodka, Pavan Moscato Liqueur, and Limoncello) headlines a roster of kicky-cool summer refreshers. Finally, there’s Ellie, the hotel’s very own Holstein cow routinely spoiled with a custom diet, special baths, massages, and hoof pedicures, so as not to taint her pristine milk, used to make such savories as the Silver Mountain Aged Cheddar with fresh fig and cream of balsamic—especially satiating when chased with El Encanto’s own locally-brewed unpasteurized beer. Equally appetizing is the setting. The Dining Room is elegantly laidback and, if dining al fresco on The Terrace, delicious fare is served with a side of stunning Santa Barbara vistas. Within this space, The Wine Room, a private enclave, hosts intimate gatherings. Cozier still are drinks and light bites enjoyed in The Lounge, an extension of one of El Encanto’s welcoming—and totally redone—bungalow and suite setups. But regardless of where one elects to sip and savor, the hotel satiates all the senses. Cheers! ElEncanto.com

TOQUE TALK El Encanto’s executive chef, Patrice Martineau, dishes to bask... THE PROPERTY “The setting was congruent to my longstanding desire to work for Orient-Express Hotels. Santa Barbara’s local seafood and produce has made menu planning an absolute joy. So inspiring!” THE DISH “Kobe style white wine-braised short ribs, which I make with tomatoes and basil.” THE GARDEN “I’ve planted a lot of herbs, obviously, and vegetables that I used in Japan that might not be available locally, such as wasabi leaves, Kyoto Red carrots, and burdock.” THE MENU “California offers such a wealth of fresh produce that it would practically be a crime not to utilize items in season. We will probably keep a few items that guests love and request, but it’s important to keep a menu fresh and interesting.” THE EXPERIENCE “I believe guests will find my cooking to be quite personal and new. Complement the culinary aspect with great wines and fabulous service, and I think we have a winning recipe.”
