Wait 'n' Go Traffic System Co-designers Wen-Li Huang U-Chak Wai
Background Taiwan is infamous for its messy traffic. There are people who don’t obey the traffic rules and some defects in the system that haven’t been solved. Have we, who are so used to this situation, ever thought about the danger that lies within?
10
Design Project
Define Intersection is the place where most of the problems happen. Among these problems, we focus on the ones between pedestrians and vehicles. In Taiwan, many cars drive through the road even when there’re still people on the crossing. Core Issues 1. Pedestrians are blocked by cars when crossing the road. 2. Drivers are also blocked by pedestrians when making a turn.
Target Fields
1.
2.
3.
There’s no diagonal crossing.
Only few pedestrians walk by.
The width of the road is wide.
Without the division of time, the routes of pedestrians and vehicles collide with each other.
The efficiency of traffic drops because scattered crowds have cars stop from time to time.
The accidents are more likely to happen because it takes more time for pedestrians to cross the road.
Wait 'n' Go
11
Research As we learned more about the problems, we found that the relative status of pedestrians and drivers changed with the law enforcement being strengthened over the years.
Statuses' Shift Before the policy “Pedestrian first, vehicles often cross the road through crowds of people. As the rights of pedestrian rise, more and more people cross the road randomly or even use cellphones while walking.
12

Yield

Design Project
3E The only way to implement the traffic policy thoroughly is by fulfilling all perspectives of 3E — education, engineering and enforcement.
Education In the past, the government used to promote “Pedestrian first” policy to improve the rights of the pedestrian. As the frequency of pedestrian’s violation raises, they have redirected the policy to “Drivers respect the pedestrians, and in return, pedestrians walk faster.
Engineering Except wildly installed pedestrian scrambles, there is no other solution yet.
Enforcement The emphasis of law enforcement is more focused on drivers, as the violations of pedestrian are not easy to be banned.
Wait 'n' Go
13
Wait ’n’ Go is a traffic system that signals pedestrians to cross the road in two stages. It aims to prevent accidents between pedestrians and vehicles from happening and also uphold the rights of both sides. We also hope to provoke people’s thoughts on the problem and raise the awareness of mutual respect.
Overall Instruction A. Pedestrian First Pedestrians can cross the road at this time. Meanwhile, drivers making a turn have to stop at the waiting zone.
The top and bottom panels of the pedestrian signal being green and the little green man walking through means that the whole road is allowed to pass. Vehicle signal being a red stop sign means that vehicles have to wait.
16
Design Project
B. Vehicle First Turning vehicles can drive through the road. Meanwhile, pedestrians have to wait at the refuge island or the roadside.
The top being red and the bottom being green, also the little green man stopping in the middle means that only half of the road is allowed to pass. Vehicle signal being a green onward sign means that vehicles can drive through.
Wait 'n' Go
17
Phase General Hour At the intersection where single lance and multiple lances cross, there’re three phases in a row. The rule only functions at daytime and it’ll be back to the normal rule when there’re few pedestrians at night. Pedestrian First

Rush Hour The traffic is heavy during rush hour, so we prolong the time period of “Vehicle First” in order to relieve the traffic congestion. Multiple Lances At the intersection where both sides have multiple lances, the amount of vehicle turning right would be higher when the green light starts. As a result, we exchange the phase of pedestrian and vehicle in order to prevent cars from jamming at the intersection.

Signal Pedestrian Signal The top and bottom panels displaying the opposite diagonal stripes indicates different sides of the crossing separately. Then, there is the little green man in the middle panel showing people how to cross in different phase. When the phase is about to end, the stripes will flicker and the green man will walk faster. Also, between each phase there’re few-second pause as the buffer time for traffic.

Road
Raised Crossing We raised the crossing for about 7.5 centimeters to improve the safety and visibility of pedestrians while crossing the road.
Two-stage Diagonal Stripes On different sides of the crossing, we painted two types of diagonal stripes to make the indication of “two-stage crossing more clearly.
20
Design Project
Backward Crossing We moved the crossing backward for 8 - 10 meters to let drivers have more time to react and buffer.
Turning Vehicle Waiting Zone Waiting zone provides an area for vehicles making a turn to wait without blocking the road behind.
Refuge Island In the middle of the crossing, there is a refuge island providing an area for pedestrians to wait safely on the road.

HOTAE Laundry Basket Co-designers Pin-Yi Lu Yu-Ting Su
HOTAE
Background It gets irritating and tiring when doing the same thing over and over again, and doing laundry is surely one of them. Not only is it an everyday chore, the movement of hanging clothes is also repeated. When you keep bending down to reach the clothes, it could as well cause some problems on your body. How to make doing laundry less boring and more convenient is what we aimed to do.
30
Design Project
Research We observed how people do their laundry and used the method of HTA, Hierarchical Task Analysis, to discover the problems.
take clothes out of the laundry net loose the clothes hang clothes onto the hanger take out clothes & laundry nets one by one put clothes in the laundry basket place basket under the clotheshorse
hang it on the clotheshorse repeat the same movement finish hanging clothes
take out one piece and hang it go back to the basket repeat the same movement move basket for the second time
put the socks’ hanger on top of the washing machine open the door of the washing machine
continue to hang the clothes
take out socks and hang them
place basket to where it was
take out one piece at a time
finish hanging clothes
hang underwears and socks on the outer clotheshorse hang tops and bottoms on the inside one turn clothes inside out to the right side repeat the same movement finish hanging clothes
We found that these problems happen most commonly during the process of hanging clothes.
A
Repeated Movement : It takes several different steps repeatedly while hanging clothes.
B
Clothes' Deformation : Hanger deforms clothes that has tight collar.
C
Indirect Harm : Bending over to reach clothes continually causes lumbago.
D
Low Mobility : To move the heavy laundry basket around is inconvenient. We put our emphasis on A.,C., and D., aiming to design a functional laundry basket.
HOTAE
31
Mind Map With mind map we set four goals that our laundry basket should reach, which are : reducing repeated movements, preventing users from bending over continually, improving the messy procedure, and increasing the mobility.
32
Design Project
Sketch According to these four goals, we put our ideas into sketches. After discussion, we gathered our ideas into one graph and started making prototypes.
HOTAE

Prototype I
Laundry Basket springs at the bottom raise clothes up as the weight of clothes loses
Hanger Rack place hangers inside while hanging clothes smaller compartment for clothespins
Storage Space store detergent and other stuffs
Wheels easier to move around
The mechanism of springs is uncertain and experiments take time. Therefore, we tried to find another way to lift clothes.
34
Design Project
Prototype II
Adjustable Sheet change the depth of the basket at any time detachable sheet that is easier to wash
Laundry Basket simpler mechanism to lift the clothes
Storage Space store detergent and other stuffs
Wheels easier to move around
One-side adjustable sheet would be more convenient than the both-side one.

Package Design Cardboard Package
Background The package is one of the projects that i’ve done for the internship in HORCH Development Design Inc., which was designed for the mouthpiece of asthma inhaler. It contains two pieces, battery, and the instruction inside.
46
Design Project
Prototype I Inspired by the way people take the asthma m e d i c i n e , p ro t o t y p e I i s d e s i g n e d a s a matchbox package. However, it would be better if the box consists of one piece instead of two due to the production.
Prototype II The arrangement of the pieces inside the box is based on the way the mouthpiece explodes and three pieces are put in a vertical way. It isn’t the best way to put them because it’s loose enough to drop into the bottom.
From left to right, they are prototype I ~ IV.
Package Design
47
Prototype III The way prototype III holds the pieces is still not tight enough, so we tried yet another way.
Prototype IV The arrangement of the prototype IV is what we liked, so we made some adjustments based on this.
