It’s been a weekend of nail biting for those of us addicted to The X Factor’s Judges’ Houses. The Groups jetted off to Ibiza with Louis Walsh, Simon Cowell took the Girls to Malibu, the Boys flew to Nice with Nicole Scherzinger and the Overs went to LA with Sharon Osbourne. I’m rooting for Mrs O this year – I’m a sucker for dogs, so James Wilson gets my vote and, of course, Honey G is in ‘da house’… (Is anyone else wondering if she’s really just Sarah Millican doing a spoof ?) For me, there was never any doubt the Brooks brothers would get through, Nicole’s secret weapon is Matt Terry and Simon’s girls are amazing. Let the games begin! ’m dedicating this show to [Brangelina]’, announced Adele last Tuesday at her concert in New York. The Brit singer was referring to what she called ‘the elephant in the room’ – that Angelina Jolie, 41, was filing for divorce from Brad Pitt. And no sooner had the bombshell dropped, than the rumour mill surrounding the power couple’s sudden demise swung into overdrive. We may never know exactly what went wrong – but The last film the former something lovebirds starred in has clearly together was 2015’s By The made Ange Sea, about a couple whose very angry. marriage is in crisis. together since 2004 – famously meeting on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith, while Brad was still married to Jennifer Aniston. Yet, just two years after their fairy-tale wedding, it’s not only over, but Ange is asking for full custody of their six kids. Also, as US lawyer Areva Martin pointed out on TV last week, ‘This could prove tricky for Angelina, as she’s been in the press recently, talking about what a “great dad” he is.’ Ange was ‘upset’ with Brad’s parenting skills – he’s admitted he is ‘tougher’ than her – and rumour has it, he’d smoke pot and possibly drink too much. US website TMZ even reported that Brad had ‘anger issues’, and Ange felt the situation had become ‘too dangerous’ for their children. Meanwhile, Brad has spoken out to say he is ‘saddened’ about his wife’s decision, and wants ‘what’s best for the kids’ – saying he’ll fight for joint custody. The fact that Ange has called divorce lawyer Laura Wasser (she represented Johnny Depp against Amber Heard), speaks volumes, as Wasser always comes out fighting. As for rumours that French actress Marion Cotillard, 40, and Brad may have had an affair on the set of his latest film, Allied, the French actress swiftly addressed them with an Instagram post, explaining her husband Guillaume was ‘the only one that I need’. Many social media reactions involve how Brad’s ex-wife, now happily married to actor Justin Theroux, must be feeling. In one picture being revisited with glee by Twitter users, Jennifer delivers a withering put-down as Rachel in her hit TV show Friends, saying, ‘And that, my friend, is what they call closure.’ Who knows how this showbiz tsunami plays out, but you can be sure it won’t be quietly…

Yet that’s how she came across on The Saturday Show last week when she told presenter Matt Allwright she’d punch him… if he got too close to her hair! Matt and his co-host, Gaby Roslin, had been discussing a clip from US programme The Tonight Show in which presenter Jimmy Fallon ran his hands through presidential candidate Donald Trump’s hair (whatever floats your boat, Jimmy…). Ruth, 56, who was on The Saturday Show to talk about her and Eamonn’s new series of How The Other Half Lives, was quick to express her distaste at Fallon’s actions. ‘He Eamonn loves shopping [Fallon] with Ruth. She’s said, ‘I can asked him spend a whole day in a [Trump], department store with him I know, but looking at lamps. you think of his politics, that, to me, is humiliation. I find it uncomfortable to watch, because we’re all going, “Is it a toupée? Is it a weave? Is there hairspray?”’ Matt jumped in to disagree, saying, ‘But he was on an entertainment show,’ suggesting that Trump was fair game for having agreed to appear with Fallon on the popular talk show in the first place. Ruth fired back, ‘Well, I’m on an entertainment show and if you ruffled my hair, I’d punch you!’ Eamonn grimaced in shock, while Matt, Gaby and fellow guest Ferne McCann all gasped – but Ruth was quick to laugh off her remark, adding, ‘Just saying, Matt!’ But it then became a running joke throughout the rest of the show, when Eamonn confessed that Ruth has stabbed him… but only with her cutlery, when he’s trying to pinch her food. ‘I’ve often attempted to take a chip with my fork and eat it [but she] absolutely stabs you for that! She’s very protective.’ Ruth certainly has a feisty reputation – she’s said in the past, ‘Eamonn’s all mouth and [no] trousers, but really I run the show!’ What with the punching, and now stabbing, too, we’ll have to be careful never to get on the wrong side of her!

Davina: ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff’ avina McCall has survived many things - being abandoned and later betrayed by her mother, drug addiction and losing her half-sister, Caroline, far too young (she was just 50) to cancer. But each devastating blow has, she says, taught her to be stronger - and wiser. One of her darkest moments happened just months after she married her husband, the former Pet Rescue presenter Matthew Robertson, 16 years ago. Picking up a weekend paper, she saw her own face, accompanied by the words, ‘Mummy, I need a meeting.’

Like a knife through the heart, Davina knew instantly her French mother, Florence, was behind the article. The Long Lost Family host said that she still has ‘no guilt’ about not visiting Florence before she died in 2008, saying it taught her a crucial lesson. ‘If I make a decision that shocks others but is necessary to me, that’s OK,’ she said. ‘Silliness is good for the soul,’ says Davina. The next morning, she went to an NA meeting. ‘It changed my life,’ the 48-year-old said, simply. But the biggest life lesson Davina has ever learned is from her big sister, Caroline Baday, who died of cancer in August 2012, aged 50. ‘They gave her 18 months to start with – she went in seven weeks,’ the star recalls. ‘The way Caroline handled herself, the way she helped all of us get through it, she was so inspiring... She taught me how not to fear death. I loved her. I really loved her... For that, I will be eternally grateful.’ Losing her sister, being abandoned by her mother and realising her drug addiction could cost her dearly, all taught Davina important lessons. ‘Don’t sweat the small stuff,’ she says. After a year together, father-of-two Nick, 43, moved into Andrea’s home last year, and she has since admitted to adopting a ‘never say never’ attitude to a possible third trip down the aisle. Nick certainly seems to have transformed her life. Previously viewed as the ‘goody two shoes’ of Loose Women, Andrea has been less inhibited on-air of late, sharing raunchy banter and personal revelations. This new-found irreverence was clear when Andrea shared an Instagram photo of a bottle of gin the night before her op, captioning it, ‘ I’m going to sit down, put my feet up and enjoy my last one of these for a wee while… #purelyfor medicinalpurposes.’ As she takes her first steps on the road to recovery with Nick by her side, there must be a tinge of sadness that Mr Right has come along too late for them to have their own children together. the delay in Carol and Mark’s wedding plans. ‘I’m booked in for reconstructive surgery in November,’ confesses Carol, 56. ‘Let’s be honest, it would be nice, wouldn’t it, to have two breasts?’ Then she laughs – a deep, infectious, almost filthy laugh that has you joining in within seconds. Standing 5ft 9in and a slender size 10, with an elfin haircut that suits her delicate features, Carol will have little difficulty in looking good whatever dress she pulls on – but we get the point. Her breast-cancer journey has been well documented. A stage 3 aggressive tumour was discovered in 2014, followed by six rounds of chemotherapy, 15 doses of radiotherapy and a mastectomy on the left side. What better way to signal a new start than a new, cancerfree breast and a wedding? Her relationship with Mark, 34, is as strong as ever. ‘We’re good,’ she confirms. ‘Let’s face it, we’re married in all but name already, aren’t we?’ The couple share a small flat in London, and now own a home in France. It will be Mark’s first wedding and Carol’s second – she was married to TV presenter Chris Evans in the 90s. So, apart from surgery and the wedding, does Carol have any plans to get herself back on TV? ‘I will do a bit,’ she muses. Big Brother fan Carol appears frequently on spin-off show Big Brother’s Bit On The Side, which is back in January. ‘But if life’s taught me anything, it’s this: enjoy it – don’t miss a moment. Don’t spend all your time working if you can help it, because we never get a day back. ‘See your friends, see your family, and just enjoy the time together while you can.’

My hero husban Kelli and Tom had a special bond
Even though he was dying, Joely Attwater’s devoted hubby, Tom, spent his final days trying to save her daughter….
he night Tom, my husband, died, I wrapped myself in his dressing gown, sprayed the pillow with his aftershave and slept on his side of the bed, desperate to feel close to him just one more time. Almost a year on, the smell from Tom’s clothes is fading. But the desperate longing to feel his warm arms around me is still as strong as ever. Night times are the worst. When the kids are asleep and the house is silent, my mind fills with thoughts of him. I replay the happy times, and relive his final moments, when the brain tumour he’d been diagnosed with three years earlier finally took him. Tom, only 32 when he died, wasn’t just my husband – he was my hero, too. He had spent the last months of his life helping to save my daughter Kelli’s life. She was three when Tom and I met, and had already fought childhood neuroblastoma – a cancerous tumour – once. Diagnosed at three months old, she needed chemotherapy and surgery to get rid of three in her tummy. As a 21-year-old single mum, it had been a lonely, terrifying time for me. Thankfully, Kelli was given the all-clear in February 2011. But doctors warned me her cancer might return. And, just two months after

nd’s legacy of love Tom was stronger than me. Determined to make the most of every moment while recovering from his op, he made a bucket list. The first thing was to raise £500,000 for Kelli to have treatment abroad if her cancer ever returned. Knowing the advanced treatments in the US would give her the best chance of survival if the worst happened, we’d already made a start. But now Tom was determined to use the time he had left to hit the target. ‘I need to know I’ve done everything I can to give Kelli a chance of life,’ he explained. Despite suffering regular seizures and severe fatigue, Tom worked tirelessly organising events, including a 22-mile sponsored walk, which he also completed. Marrying me was on his bucket list and, in June 2012, he proposed. ‘You’re going to be my daddy,’ Kelli cried in delight. Tom was heartbroken that he’d only be her dad for a short time, so he wrote her a letter with advice about everything from school to marriage. ‘I won’t be able to drop you off on your first day at big school, pick you up after your first date or cheer when you graduate,’ he wrote. ‘But while your old dad is still around, I thought I’d give you some life advice in one go.’

The children laid flowers at Tom’s funeral
The children help pick Joely up when the grief knocks her down
‘I won’t be able to pick you up after your first date’ Despite everything, our wedding in April 2014 was a wonderful day. Afterwards, Tom started his radiotherapy treatment. We thought this might have ended our chances of ever having a baby but, in September 2014, I fell pregnant. Soon after that, Tom hit his fundraising target for Kelli. His mission complete, he
was able to relax and look forward to our new arrival. I’ll never forget how happy he was when he held Fletcher for the first time in May 2015. But, after Fletcher’s birth, Tom’s health deteriorated. Within weeks he couldn’t walk or talk. His memory went, too, but his eyes lit up whenever he saw the children. Then, in September last year, my heart broke. Tom was at our home in Pattingham, Staffordshire, when he began to slip away. I sat by his bed, holding his hand, telling him how much I loved him as he took his last breath. His loss left a huge, gaping hole inside of me and, a year on, I miss him every day. I’ve found support through a group called Widowed & Young. They pick me up when grief fells me. Even on my lowest days, Kelli, who is cancer-free for now, and Fletcher, always make me smile. We talk about their daddy all the time and Fletcher, now four months, smiles when he sees photos of him. Tom wasn’t with us for long enough, but in the short time we had, he gave me enough love and precious memories to last a lifetime.
WORDS: JULIE McCAFFREY AND LAUREN CUMMING PICTURES: NEVILLE WILLIAMS
meeting Tom through an online dating site, it did. I’d told him about my precious little girl and what she’d been through. From the moment he met her, they had a special bond. Kelli was only three and was wary of strangers – especially men, because the only ones she’d known were doctors. But she took to Tom instantly. They were always pulling faces, and Kelli thought he was hilarious. When we found out that her cancer had returned, he kept us both going. ‘You’ve got naughty lumps in your tummy and doctors need to take them out,’ we told her before surgery. Thankfully, the operation was a success. But, as she recovered, Tom began to get terrible headaches. He put it down to stress but, in October 2012, he suffered a seizure and was rushed to hospital. Tests found he had aggressive brain cancer. My mind spun as the doctors explained it was terminal, and we clung to each other in shock. I’d almost lost Kelli. I couldn’t lose Tom. ‘What had I done to deserve such awful things?’ I wondered to myself. The doctor couldn’t say how long we had left. I couldn’t understand the unfairness of having to watch the two people I loved so dearly suffer so cruelly.

He was offended at the time, because I wouldn’t get a similar tribute to him. ‘Are you kidding?!’ I said. ‘I’m not getting any man’s name branded on me – unless it’s my kids.’ Both Jake and Shane Jr have tattoos. Even my hubby, Ray, got one done in LA a few years ago of our daughter Ciara. Personally, I still wouldn’t have one. Laser removal surgery is expensive and painful. And stay clear of inkings to do with your romantic life, because tattoos are forever. Men? Well, it depends!

71% OF WOMEN WHO’VE HAD A HEART ATTACK FELT UNUSUALLY TIRED A MONTH EARLIER
AS WE GET OLDER, IT’S MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER TO KEEP AN EYE ON HOW EVERYTHING’S RUNNING – AND THAT MEANS BOOKING IN FOR THE REGULAR NHS HEALTH CHECKS YOU SHOULD BE HAVING…
L
ike a car, your body only works at its best when you look after it properly, and it should be routinely monitored for problems. Too many of us only see our doctor when we think something is wrong, yet prevention is far better than cure. Dr Ellie Cannon shares the seven most important NHS health checks for women in their 40s and above.
BEWARE OF BREAST CANCER Two million women attend a mammogram each year in this country. Any woman registered with a UK doctor is invited to attend from the age of 47 up until 73, every three years. A mammogram is an X-ray of each breast that’s designed to pick up early cancers. The breasts are pressed between metal plates, and it’s not a comfortable procedure, but it’s a small price to pay for early cancer detection. Don’t miss your check-up.
NO MORE WAIST We talk about weight and dress size but what really matters is your ‘waist circumference’. Measuring your waist now forms part of the NHS’ over-40s health check every five years, because carrying weight around your middle – being an ‘apple’ – makes you more susceptible to diabetes and heart disease. Do this yourself with a tape measure. Find the midway point between the top of your hips and the bottom of your ribs. It should measure under 80cm to be ‘healthy’.
BONE UP Bone density screening is done to detect osteoporosis – brittle bones – which is usually a silent problem. In fact, sufferers may only find out they have it when they experience an unexpected broken bone. Regular screening is currently offered if you’ve had a premature menopause, if your mum has osteoporosis, if you are chronically underweight or if you take steroids long-term.
CHOLESTEROL COUNT High cholesterol can increase the risk of narrowing of the arteries, strokes and heart attacks – but it has no symptoms. Since it became part of the NHS health check, it’s standard to get your cholesterol levels tested from the age of 40, every five years. It involves a simple blood test, but you needn’t wait for your GP. Many high-street chemists offer cholesterol tests, too.

LET DOWN THE PRESSURE Everyone should have a blood-pressure check every five years – crucial once you turn 40. Having high blood pressure raises your risk of strokes, heart attacks and kidney damage. Get it checked by the nurse at your GP surgery, or there are often machines for the purpose in the waiting room. Many chemists also offer this check. If your parents have high blood pressure, it’s essential to check.

About the morning after… Q I’ve heard that women should ask for a coil rather than the morning-after pill as emergency contraception. Why? A Coils are a really popular method of contraception. They are tiny devices that sit in the womb and prevent any fertilised egg bedding in and forming a pregnancy. When used as emergency contraception, they do exactly the same thing. If a coil is put in within five days of sex, it can prevent a pregnancy. In fact, it has a lower failure rate than the morning-after pill and, once it’s in, you can use it as your birth control method going forward.
DON’T FEAR THE SMEAR Cervical smears are so important, as they can pick up the early stages of cervical problems before cancer has even developed. You can arrange a smear test through your GP surgery, and you should be reminded with a letter every three years. After 50, that changes to a fiveyearly test, but it’s still vital. If you can’t recall when your last one was, ask at your GP surgery.
BEAT BOWEL CANCER
Q My father has started to lose his memory. His GP said it could be dementia, but maybe not Alzheimer’s. What’s the difference? A Dementia means that someone has memory loss. Alzheimer’s is the commonest type, but 150,000 people in
the UK have vascular dementia, where the brain is damaged through poor blood supply. We’d suspect this in someone who’s had strokes, or when the dementia progresses in noticeable steps, rather than gradually. Start talking now with your family about your dad’s support and ongoing care.
Help! I’m a gambling addict Q I’m addicted to gambling machines, but no one knows. Can a GP help? A Yes, a GP can help refer you to a local addiction service for therapy. This may be one-on-one or in a group, but be prepared for a waiting list. It’s also worth speaking to Gamblers Anonymous, where you can go straight away. This addiction affects 0.1 per cent of the UK population, but facing it is the start of recovery.

Jonny, 26, was in first place but, with just 700 metres to go, he started to falter in the heat. Thankfully, Alistair, 28 – who was in third place – caught Jonny before he fell and helped him to the finish line, before pushing him over it first, earning him second place. The pair had been overtaken by South African Henri Schoeman. Jonny was taken to hospital and put on a drip. Selfless Alistair claimed he would have done the same for anyone, not just his brother. Two decades after the mysterious killing of the sixyear-old beauty queen, a new documentary claims to have solved the case…
Was JonBenét killed by her brother? he lived for just six short years, yet her face is famous around the world. Nearly two decades ago, child beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey was found dead in the basement of her family home in Boulder, Colorado. The pictures of her, heavily made-up and in provocative outfits, now appear sinister, with the knowledge that the little girl was doomed never to reach adulthood. As soon as it hit the headlines, the case sparked worldwide interest and, as it remained unsolved, has

immediately hired lawyers and wouldn’t allow investigators to speak to Burke. To complicate the mystery further, the Ramseys insisted that JonBenét had been put to bed at 10pm, but the autopsy found undigested pineapple in her system, meaning she must have eaten later than that. A bowl of the fruit, with both Burke and Patsy’s fingerprints on it, was found in the kitchen, but they denied any knowledge of it. However, the investigation had been so bungled, the crime scene was left totally contaminated, leaving it near to impossible to prove the Ramseys’ innocence or guilt. As suspicion mounted, a grand jury in 1998 returned an indictment against her parents on charges of child abuse resulting in JonBenét’s death. But, this was quashed by the district attorney, who felt a conviction was unlikely. In time, more suspects were considered. Gary Oliva,
a convicted sex offender who had a shrine to JonBenét, was arrested with a stun gun and poem to her in his rucksack. Junkyard owner Michael Helgoth – who was found dead in 1997 – was also put forward by an investigator hired by the Ramseys. However, in a new US documentary, The Case of: JonBenét Ramsey, former FBI agent Jim Clemente and a team of experts came up with a different theory, one, he says, that ‘explains everything’. They believe Burke was eating pineapple, when JonBenét got out of bed and, hungry, went down to the kitchen and nabbed some of his midnight snack. They claim he lashed out with a torch, killing her accidentally. Her parents then came up with the note to cover for him. The team put forward some compelling evidence. Burke had a vicious temper, and had hit his younger sister with a golf club a year before.
Her parents acted oddly following the discovery of her body
Burke’s the new prime suspect
Did mum Patsy cover up for her nine-yearold son?
The mystery surrounding her death led to many theories
‘I know people think I did it, that my parents did it. We were suspects’ They have also found an extra six seconds of audio recording from the 911 call, where Patsy, believing she’d hung up, said, ‘What did you do? Help me, Jesus.’ And despite his parents claiming Burke was asleep, he can be heard saying, ‘What did you find?’ The operator, Kim Archuletta, said she felt the emergency call was rehearsed. Although the trace evidence of male DNA that was found in JonBenét’s underwear seemed to indicate a stranger had been involved, experts claimed it could have dated back to the manufacturing process. She may not have been sexually assaulted at all. And finally, analysis of the handwriting in the ransom note found similarities to Patsy’s. Not enough to convict her, but they were there. While John still maintains his daughter was killed by an intruder, and Patsy died of ovarian cancer in 2006. Burke was recently interviewed by American presenter, Dr Phil, where he admitted, ‘I know people think I did it, that my parents did it. I know that we were suspects.’ Viewers noted that Burke smiled through the interview and appeared awkward. Put together, it’s a convincing argument. Could the mystery of JonBenét’s death have been solved?

spawned hundreds of theories and accusations. So it’s not surprising that in the run-up to the 20th anniversary, there have been no less than four TV shows made – and one has controversially named Burke, JonBenét’s brother, who was nine at the time, as the killer. It was 5.52am on 26 December 1996, when JonBenét’s mother, Patsy Ramsey, called 911. ‘We have a kidnapping,’ she screamed at the operator. Patsy said she’d woken at 5.30am and gone down the stairs of their sprawling mansion to find a ransom note left there. JonBenét was nowhere to be seen. Police searched the house, while the Ramseys waited for a call from the kidnappers that never came. It wasn’t until that afternoon that JonBenét’s father, John, went down to the basement and discovered her body. She’d been gagged with duct tape, bludgeoned, sexually assaulted and strangled with a garotte fashioned from one of Patsy’s paint brushes. She was wearing a white nightie, knickers and tights. They were soaked in her own urine, and her pink nightgown was lying next to her. John picked her up and ran upstairs, placing her body at the foot of the Christmas tree, as Patsy threw herself upon her dead daughter, screaming. But despite their apparent devastation, suspicion fell upon the family. There was no sign of forced entry, and the ransom note – a bizarre, rambling three-page affair, claiming to be from a ‘foreign faction’ – was written on the Ramseys’ own stationery, and demanded an oddly specific sum of $118,000 – almost the exact amount of John’s Christmas bonus. Police found the Ramseys’ behaviour odd. They refused to be interviewed separately,

PASTA DIET Hooray! Pasta lovers are often thinner than those who worry it’s fattening and steer clear. Here’s how to indulge and lose up to 14lb in four weeks
HOW IT WORKS The key point is portion size. In a recent trial of slimmers, people were eating just 50-60g of (cooked) pasta at a time – that’s just a handful or two of cooked pasta (around 20g dry weight). Start each meal with a salad. Not only will this fill you up, but it also lowers how much sugar you produce after eating pasta, which helps fight weight gain. Cook pasta al dente – just a little firm when you bite it. Al dente pasta converts more slowly to sugar in your system. Even better, cook it and cool it. This creates high quantities of resistant starch in the pasta, which fills us up but can’t be absorbed by our body. This reduces the number of calories. You can warm it again by plunging it into boiling water, then draining. Experts found people who eat a high-carb evening meal will be less hungry in the morning due to appetite hormone levels. Some sauces are better with long pasta like spaghetti when serving sizes are small, but this might not look filling. Snap strands into small pieces or, try small pasta shapes. If hungry between meals, choose from the snack bar (page 36). Stick to low-cal drinks.

ifty, fat and frumpy – that’s what I was. There was no getting away from it. I hated my 23st 10lb, size 30, blobby body, and covered it up with baggy tops and stretchy trousers. If I could avoid having my photo taken, I would, and I never, ever dared to look at myself in mirrors. My husband of 32 years, Nick, 54, loved me whatever weight I was. As did my kids, Matthew, 28, and Helen, 24. But I was deeply unhappy with my size. The problem was, I’d been big for so long, I really didn’t know where to begin to change things. I’d always eaten the same foods. And, growing up having stodgy, home-cooked meals, like shepherd’s pie, for dinner, I’d

always been a bit on the chunky side. Then, when I had my own family, I carried on making the same sort of carb-heavy meals and, over the years, my weight had just crept up and up. Working long hours as a chef in a hospice kitchen didn’t help – it meant I was constantly surrounded by food. Every so often, I’d try to diet. I’d lose a bit, then give up and pile it all back on – plus a bit more. My unhappiness about my weight deepened when Helen and her partner, Stuart, had my first grandchild, Lily, a few months before my 50th birthday in January 2009. Lily was the light of my life and I loved spending time with her. But I couldn’t get down on the floor to play with her, because otherwise I’d never get up again! And once she was up and toddling, I was really going to struggle to keep up with her. Yet I felt like it was too late for me to change anything. Then, in February 2010, when Lily was one, Helen and Stuart came over to our house in Penarth, South Glamorgan, to tell Nick and me the happy news that they were engaged. They’d set the date for two years’ time, in May 2012.

I was going to be the mother-of-the-bride, and that meant finding an outfit I didn’t feel completely hideous in, while spending all day in front of a camera. Helen must’ve sensed my concern as, a few days later, she suggested we get fit together by joining a local Zumba class. I’d never heard of it before, but anything was worth a try. So the next week I pulled on a huge, baggy T-shirt, black leggings and trainers and went to my first class. I tried to hide at the back, but when you’re the biggest person in the room, hiding yourself isn’t easy. When the music started, I did my best to follow the instructor’s moves, but I felt really clumsy and uncoordinated. I’d always loved Strictly Come Dancing but, as I puffed my way through the routine, I couldn’t have felt further from the glamorous dancers on the television…

‘I hardly recognise the fat, unhappy, hopeless woman I was five years ago’ Within minutes, I was sweating profusely and felt like my heart was going to burst out of my chest. But, despite that, I absolutely loved it and went back again the next week. A fortnight on, I weighed myself and found I’d lost 7lb, which motivated me to keep going, even when Helen stopped coming with me. ‘I don’t want to be a short, fat old lady,’ I told myself. At 5ft nothing, there wasn’t much I could do about my height, and I definitely wasn’t going to get any younger! But, for the first time in years, I really felt as though I could do something about my ever increasing size. So, as well as upping my Zumba classes to five times a week, I made a conscious effort to overhaul my diet, too. I ditched
my heavy dinners and calorific snacks and started eating more fruit, vegetables and lean meat. It was slow and steady but, by the time I went shopping for my wedding outfit with Helen, two years on, I’d lost nearly 8st and dropped six dress sizes. Trying on a beautiful size 18, red satin dress with matching bolero jacket, I burst into tears. ‘You look amazing, Mum,’ Helen said, crying too. The wedding was absolutely beautiful and I felt so good and confident in my outfit. But, while I was happy to have got down to a size 18, I still wanted to lose more weight. It was easy to keep up the Zumba classes, because I loved them so much. I’d lose myself in the Latin music and dance moves. Then, when my weight loss started to plateau, I joined a gym and got a personal trainer. It’s been hard work, but I’m now down to 9st 12lb, a dress size 8. I’ve got so much energy now, I don’t have any problems keeping up with Lily, now seven, or her baby sister, Isla, seven months. And, looking back, I hardly recognise the fat, unhappy, hopeless woman I was five years ago. Discovering Zumba changed absolutely everything for me. It helped me to shake and shimmy my way to a healthier and happier life – for good.

Do you watch your diet? I do. I cut out the sugar, but life gets in the way sometimes. You have parties, holidays, you go out for a curry. I don’t want to be constantly worrying about what I’m putting in my mouth. If I go to a party, I’ll have a few drinks and a fry-up the next morning. It’s about being mindful and sometimes taking the healthy option. You recently posted about doing a juice cleanse… When things are very hectic, my throat comes up and I feel really sluggish. When that happens, you do a day’s juicing and you feel amazing. So you’re not on a new diet? Nah. I did day one and then had pizza on a photo shoot! I’m off to film TOWIE in Marbella and want to feel lighter on camera, so I’ll juice for 10 days before then. It’s not just about losing weight – your eyes are brighter, and you’ve got more energy. If you eat too much sugar, neck Red Bulls and drink coffee 24/7, you feel like a slug. Juicing picks me up. You often get papped without make-up… Oh, yeah – I always look a right mess. But what do people expect? I’m not a model and I’m far from perfect, I’m just a normal girl who’s been given a great opportunity. Do you see what I’m saying? I’m past caring. There’s trouble ahead for Stella, too, as the shooting hits the headlines and powerful people question her handling of the case. Speaking about his character, dad-of-two Jamie said, ‘I’ve always wanted to avoid the “monstrous” tag in my portrayal of him. I lost a lot of money, too, in the Bros days. You still have a huge fan base in the UK – does that surprise you? It certainly encourages me. I love it when a black cabbie says, ‘All right, Matt – how’s your brother?’ I’ve been in the spotlight for over 30 years, but it’s still the most comforting thing when someone comes up to me and says they’re proud of what I’ve achieved. I think the Brits respect someone who has been on a bit of a journey. You’re back in London at Wembley next month. Will this be a showcase for your new music? No – it’ll be a bit of everything; a sort of celebration. I have a huge choir backing me, so it’s going to be fun. I’m lucky enough to have this special audience. The fans are more like old friends – they know each other and me, so it’ll be like a homecoming. Your new single is about to come out, isn’t it?
Yes – it’s called Gone Too Long, and it’s quite a personal song, written when I was in a relationship and wasn’t happy. But I’ve tried to make this track a little more youthful, more urban. I’ve been very inspired by people like Justin Timberlake – I’m a big fan. There’s been talk about a Bros reunion. Is that still a possibility? There are so many ideas and offers on the table at the moment, and while I’m in London, I’ll be working out the best plan… so you don’t want to rule anything out! What do you make of music shows like The X Factor and The Voice? I’d love to spend some time in Britain and be a judge on The Voice because, if anyone knows how to make a career out of singing, I do. And I wish the judges on these shows would tell the contestants that they must continue with their journey even though they’ve been rejected on the show – because they may go on to become living legends. No one could have told me or Luke that we wouldn’t have hit records with Bros, because we were so determined to succeed. O Matt Goss plays Wembley Arena on 1 October (tickets from ticketmaster.co.uk). His new single, Gone Too Long, is released on 2 October

TRAVEL SNAPSHOT With over 2,000 years of history on offer, it’s not surprising that over seven million tourists flocked to Italy’s capital last year. Peak season for tourism is between June and August, but with temperatures reaching over 30°C then – and outdoor sightseeing the number-one appeal – it’s better to visit in spring or autumn, when it’s cooler for a stroll around the city. Getting around is easy enough and can be done by various means of transport, including by boat and even by Segway! You’ll need at least a few nights in the city to tick off the major must-do’s – Rome wasn’t built in a day, as the saying goes!

Thanks to a generous €1.5 million donation from fashion house Bulgari, Rome’s Spanish Steps, made famous in the 1953 flick Roman Holiday, have been undergoing restoration. Although originally due to finish in spring, they are now scheduled to open at the end of the month, so best check for updates if you want to channel your inner Audrey Hepburn. The rest of the best snapping spots are usually extremely busy, so if you want a ‘perfect picture’ of the Pantheon without someone else’s selfie stick in shot, get down there early. Head to the church of Santa Maria, in Cosmedin, to test the honesty of your travelling companions, too! Legend believes the antique stone face in the portico of the church, the Bocca Della Veritá, bites the hand off those who lie…
