ON JUNE 30, 2015, BEN AFFLECK AND JENNIFER Garner revealed to People that they had “made the difficult decision to divorce.” Now, a year later, they haven’t filed divorce papers—and they’re living together at their L.A. estate most of the time. They’ve downplayed reconciliation rumors, but what’s really going on? “They’re still figuring things out,” says a Garner friend. “Ben still doesn’t want
the divorce, and he might actually get his way.” The couple spent some of the spring together with their kids Violet, 10, Seraphina, 7, and Sam, 4, in London and Europe, sharing a rented house in London while Affleck filmed Justice League. “She had the best time in Europe with Ben and the kids,” says her friend. “She seemed much happier when she returned to L.A. Before her death at 22, Bobbi Kristina Brown’s life was a haze of violence and addiction, says the man who found her unconscious on Jan. 31, 2015. Max Lomas, who lived with Brown and her boyfriend, Nick Gordon, in Roswell, Ga., says whatever questions remain about the tragedy, one culprit is clear: “We were all bad into drugs.” Members of Brown’s family claim Gordon bears responsibility for the tragedy (he did not respond to calls for comment). Lomas says the couple were on a destructive path. Introduced as teens, Lomas and Brown dated until he went to jail in 2011 due to a probation violation. Despite his problems, Lomas claims “[Whitney Houston] always wanted me to protect Krissy,” and the pair remained friends. By the time of his release, Gordon and Brown were seeing each other, a relationship Lomas calls one of “extreme highs and lows” and “fights over jealousy.” Still, Lomas and the couple began using drugs together, and he says he watched Brown decline. “She was broken,” he says. Lomas says he tried to reach Brown’s aunt Pat Houston, and “they were planning an intervention.” But on that fateful night, Brown fought with Gordon after he and Lomas went to a strip club. The pair made up and went to her room. Later Lomas found Brown in the bathroom. “I knocked on the door, and that is when I see her floating in the water. I pull her out—the water is freezing—and lay her on her back. She wasn’t breathing.” Lomas, who now says he’s sober, doesn’t know what happened to Brown in those missing hours. “When you are living that kind of lifestyle, it’s hard to remember each day. They all kind of blended together.” Now he says, “I’m able to process things.” The case remains under investigation. No longer friends with Gordon, Lomas says he remembers Brown for her spirit. “If she was alive, I know she would be living in L.A. and pursuing her music career and doing all the things she wanted to do. You’ve been working on Marvel’s Daredevil, playing Claire Temple. What do you love most about being on the show? I’ve never played a character for this long, so it’s been great to watch her grow so exponentially. But it’s really just all about the people. We have to be very private about the show—we’re not allowed to talk about it, so we can only discuss it with each other. So the trust we have with each other...it’s become like a family. You also recently became an artistic mentor for the Bombay Sapphire Artisan Series at Art Basel. How did you get involved there? I used to go to Art Basel as a guest just to see the art that I loved, so this was a great experience. It’s usually so expensive for people to show their art, and the artists who got to participate in this didn’t have to pay to showcase their work— they just submitted it, and it got voted on. It was really powerful. Art should be accessible. You’re very politically vocal. Why is healthy debate important? You have to be open to learning. Sometimes you don’t know what to think until you talk to someone and have been challenged. There’s always something to learn. That’s my ultimate goal. To grow and learn. —CHRISTINA DUGAN

MY REHAB JOURNEY “I could see myself spiraling,” says reality TV star Matt Brown, 33, of spending more and more time drinking over the past year. “I was more withdrawn. I was slower. Things didn’t excite me the way they used to.” But it wasn’t the hangovers that weighed on him as much as keeping them a secret from his parents and six younger siblings, who don’t drink at all. “There was a shame for feeling weak,” says Brown. Though he says he only tended to drink every couple of nights and never blacked out, he still “saw what was around the corner.” So he entered an in-patient rehab center for 35 days over the spring. “I had to figure out what was inside me that wasn’t strong enough,” says Brown, who concluded that he wasn’t an alcoholic but was still abusing alcohol. “Now I feel stronger and wiser. I don’t worry that I’m missing out on life anymore.” —P.G.

Though the North Carolina natives have been recording Americana rock for well over a decade, their recently lauded ninth album, True Sadness, has truly thrust the band into the spotlight. Elie Wiesel was just 15 when he, his parents and younger sister were sent to a Nazi concentration camp in 1944. His mother and sister died the first day, while Wiesel and his father were transferred to Auschwitz, then Buchenwald, where his father perished just weeks before American forces liberated the camp in 1945. Why Wiesel lived when so many died was a question he grappled with for his entire life. “It was an accident I survived,” he told People in 1982. “I was too young, too timid, too weak. Therefore I must justify my existence now. ” He made it his life’s mission to ensure that the Holocaust was never forgotten, writing about his experiences in his gripping memoir Night, which helped earn him the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. He died at his New York City home on July 2. His son Shlomo Elisha said at his father’s funeral that as Wiesel’s health was deteriorating, he’d said he was looking forward to reuniting with his parents and sister. “I asked him to take a message to his parents,” the younger Wiesel said. “That he succeeded. On June 30 Adnan Syed, 36, the subject of season 1 of the popular podcast Serial, was granted a Syed during retrial for his conviction in the 1999 the retrial proceedings murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae in Baltimore Min Lee. Judge Martin P. Welch of in February. the Baltimore City Circuit Court cited Syed’s former attorney Cristina Gutierrez (now deceased) for failing to cross-examine a prosecution expert on the reliability of cell-tower data used to place Syed in a park on the night Lee vanished—the park where her body was found a month later. Syed, who has served 16 years of a life sentence, maintains his innocence and “understands we have a long way to go,” according to his attorney C. Justin Brown. Dangerous felines, a radicalized rabbit and a pooch head-over-paws in love ANIMATED Every dog has its day. It’s a rarer dog who owns a movie. Gidget (Jenny Slate), an adorable cotton ball of a Pomeranian, bright of heart and rather slight of mind, has a giddy crush on Max (Louis C.K.), the perfectly nice terrier she talks to in an apartment across the way. It’s Gidget who notices when Max doesn’t come home from his daily outing with his walker and who organizes an interspecies pet squad to track him down. Her pure romantic spirit steers us through Pets’ fun (and funny) but frantic plot: Max has run afoul of an alley-cat gang with acrobatic skills worthy of Cirque du Soleil, then fallen into the clutches of an underground rebel society of abandoned pets led by Snowball, a hopping-mad bunny (Kevin Hart). The voice work, including Dana Carvey’s as an old basset hound with wheels propping up his hind legs, is terrific. But Slate wins Best in Show. (July 8, PG)

The perfect show for a high-tech age on the verge of short-circuiting DRAMA Season 2 of USA’s somber (and sobering) conspiratorial series about our data-dependent world begins with the economy still shattered after a major cyber attack. Hacker Elliot Anderson (Rami Malek), whose relationship to reality isn’t the strongest, tries to stay grounded in a daily routine that means nothing to him—a punishingly empty loop. Joylessly observing a basketball game, he thinks, “I do see the beauty in the rules, the invisible code of chaos hiding behind the menacing face of order.” That would sound healthy only to someone who keeps V for Vendetta in his Netflix queue. It certainly doesn’t resolve his surreal relationship with the elusive Mr. Robot, played by Christian Slater with a burrowing energy that nicely complements Malek’s affectless sadness.(USA, July 13, 10 p.m.)

Seven years after the end of a nightmare that began when convicted sex offender Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy, abducted Jaycee, then 11, on her way to school, the woman whose against-theodds rescue captivated the world seems the very embodiment of no-nonsense resilience. She heads up the JAYC Foundation, an organization she started to help other families who have suffered trauma. With the support of therapy, she has shepherded the daughters Garrido fathered to the cusp of adulthood: One is in college; the other will be starting soon. “I’m so excited for them and so proud of all the challenges they have overcome,” Dugard says. She lives with her mother and assorted pets (“Like anyone else, some days it’s easier to get up than others,” she says, “especially when half the bed is taken up with a 100-lb. dog and three adult cats!”). And while she isn’t dating, she dreams of finding love one day. For now, although she can never erase the memories of her ordeal with the Garridos (who are both in prison), she’s exulting in all the discoveries of her liberated life. were luxuries we normally did not have. When we were first recovered in 2009, we were introduced to [my therapist] Rebecca’s husband, Charles. He had been a professional chef and was now helping out with food prep at their Transitioning Families program. Food choices were not something I was used to making unless it involved telling someone what I wanted from the drivethru. So when we were brought to a house that first month of transition and Chef Charles asked what kinds of food I would like in the house, I had no idea, so I just said, “The basics, please.” The next day as I rummaged through our stocked refrigerator, I came across the peanut butter—peanut butter in the fridge? Weird! My peanut butter, even as a little girl, was Skippy and lived in the cabinet. This one was an organic kind and had a funny layer of oil on the top. I asked why. Was it spoiled? No, the reply was, that’s just how some organic peanut butter was. “Organic” was not in our vocabulary. Yes, we knew what it was, but we had been lucky to just get plain fresh fruit and veggies. Another culinary discovery came the day Chef Charles prepared a picnic lunch and our first course was soup. As I prepared to sample this soup, my daughters blurted out, “Hey, this soup is cold!” Chef Charles said it was supposed to be. What trickery is this? I thought. COLD SOUP! After the

encourages me to try new foods, which is very important to me because life in the backyard was so boring. I think it’s good to try new things unless it’s scallops, oysters, or snails! I have to draw the line at slimy things. WALK THE PLANK I was afraid to walk places by myself when I was

OH SO PRETTY I met my best friend, Jessie, at the age of four.
We immediately discovered our mutual love of all things “pretty.” We would spend hours dressing up in our moms’ grown-up dresses. To us, we were beautiful. Years and many, many shall I say “events” later, “pretty” feels different to me. Has my sense of beauty been tainted? Well, in a nutshell, yes. When a psycho grown-up man that has kidnapped you and taken you away from everything you have known and loved forces you to “dress up” and put on makeup for his personal fantasies of having sex with a child—a very scared and afraid child, I might add—your viewpoint can change. I know mine has. I remember one night when Phillip dressed me up and I was crying, not loudly, but I could feel the hot tears streaming

initial shock wore off and we knew it was cold on purpose, it was easier to taste again. It really was quite an experience and memorable. I learned that some kinds of cold soups are called gazpacho. My daughters and I learned from Chef Charles how to prepare tasty meals. Much to Chef Charles’s dismay, none of his lessons have stuck with me, and I will not be the next Top Chef! Food is such a versatile thing. We can always count on it to be the subject of conversation when nothing else comes to mind. I have found it an especially useful topic when politics comes up. I used to think I wasn’t smart enough to talk politics. Phillip always made me think my opinions were not good enough. Relearning that it’s okay to have an opinion has taken time. So food conversation always trumps politics in my book . My daughters are both vegetarians and they love to cook. It works for me because I like to be cooked for! Chef Charles always

During the building of the court case against Phillip and Nancy Garrido, I was asked to go up to Tahoe and review for the police and prosecutors exactly how I was kidnapped on June 10, 1991. I think walking that hill was actually cathartic for me, even though I thought it would be traumatic. Knowing that I could walk the same path and nothing bad would happen was good for me. Months into my recovery process, I had my first solo walk. The principal of my youngest daughter’s school asked to meet with me, and since the school was just a few blocks away, I decided to walk. I was so proud of myself, and couldn’t stop the smile on my face. I knew I could do it again . . . and I have. [These days], exercise is important to me. I love to eat, too, so dieting is not really an option for me, and I’d rather exercise than restrict my diet, so I will probably never be model thin, but that suits me just fine as long as I am in shape. Exercise has helped me cope with stress and ward off depression when it comes. I never want to be that person I was in the backyard that hardly ever moved. Granted, that was not a choice that was mine to make. I was a prisoner.
down my face. I was smearing the makeup job he had done on me, but I just could not hold the tears back. I could tell he was agitated, and I knew I had to stop crying. I was scared of what would happen if I didn’t. Phillip looked at me and asked, “What are you crying for?” and I told him I felt ugly. I remember he looked at me and said, “You look beautiful. Here, I will show you. Look into the mirror.” Well, I looked. I don’t doubt he thought I was pretty that night. His creation. The girl he took from a bus stop. A girl he controlled and could be anything he wanted. He was proud of the way I looked, and he couldn’t see why I didn’t see what he saw. All I saw was a very frightened girl who I didn’t even recognize with mascara running down her cheeks and the saddest face I had ever glimpsed staring back at me. I had to avert my eyes quickly and nod in agreement; I didn’t want to provoke the sleeping dragon. When I look in the mirror now, I don’t see the ugly broken child I was and who Phillip tried his best to create because he thought that was beautiful. No, I don’t see her. I just simply see the beauty in me.
COMING TO TERMS “Do I wonder what my life would have been like if Phillip and Nancy Garrido never snatched me?” Dugard writes. “You bet your last dollar I do! But what’s done is done.”
MY DAUGHTERS My daughters are both so important to me, and

I would love to have a man love me the way Garth loves Trisha. You are probably wondering if I think I can even have a relationship with a man. Good question. Although hard to answer because I can’t see the future. HAHA. I’m not actively seeking love, and I refuse to do dating sites. I do feel like I’m totally capable of having a relationship one day. I don’t feel so damaged that I am totally put off by the idea. I just don’t know. I see my daughters have relationships, and I feel like one day when the time is right I will meet the right person for me. I like romance and fairy-tale junk, so my expectations are pretty high nowadays. So unless you ride a beautiful white stallion, can stand with me to slay all our dragons, and make me a princess, you are pretty much out of luck. I have never even been on a date before! The only boy ever to ask me out was ten, and I was nine. I didn’t really know what to say and so I turned him down. I kind of regret that now, but who knew it would be my only opportunity.

I am so proud of who they are growing up to be. You might wonder why not more of this book is about them since they are such a big part of my life. scary, I would sit under the big orange tree in the backyard of my grandparents’ house and look up at the sky and wonder what my life would be like when I grew up. I never imagined I would be kidnapped, imprisoned, and have two kids by the age of seventeen. I imagined I would be a great writer of fiction and travel the world. Or perhaps I would have beenagreatveterinarian.IguessthepointI’m trying to make is we never know what life has in store for us. Sometimes it’s bad and sometimes we win the lotto. Life hits hard. I have rebuilt my life. Little moments. One day at a time. This is the good, bad, and the cheesy life I lead. I will always try to be the best person I can and take advantage of the time I have been granted in this life. My adventure continues.

W
hen photographer Arthur Grace was assigned to shoot Robin Williams for Newsweek in 1986, he had no idea it would lead to a lifelong friendship. “We hit it off right from the start,” says Grace, 69. Over the years he often photographed his famous friend, both onstage and off, and looked forward to the day “when I was 84 and Robin was 80 and we would reminisce and put together a book.” It wasn’t to be. “Hit hard” by Williams’s suicide at 63 in 2014, Grace slowly came around to the idea of sharing the photos himself. He hopes Robin Williams: A Singular Portrait, 1986-2002 will give the world a glimpse of the “real Robin” he knew: a kind man who spoke to every homeless person he passed; a devoted dad to kids Cody, Zak and Zelda; an insanely gifted showman who had a pensive side. “He would shut down and get very quiet,” Grace says. “He took time to recharge.” And then he’d be back. “He could make you laugh anytime he wanted to,” Grace says. “He was the funniest man on the planet.”

W
hen Christie Brinkley was first discovered at age 19, “they said, ‘By the time you’re 30, you will be chewed up, spit out and forgotten,’ ” she recalls. Of course it’s safe to say she far surpassed the traditional life span of a model. “The harder I work, the luckier I feel,” Brinkley says, curling up on the couch at her sprawling Bridgehampton, N.Y., estate with her Maltipoo Chester and Labradoodle Maple Sugar. “And I have worked really hard for the past 40 years!”
Now 62, Brinkley is still modeling and has parlayed her ageless all-American sex appeal into a lifestyle empire worth an estimated $80 million. “I like to share what I do so others can take care of themselves as well,” says Brinkley, who markets Total Gym and Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare via infomercials, has a lucrative line of hair extensions and shared her beauty secrets in her book Timeless Beauty (see box). Next up, Brinkley has a new line of organic prosecco, Bellissima, launching this summer. “It is kind of a special thing to be 62 and have so many opportunities,” she says. “I never take that for granted, not for a second.” Brinkley is the first to recognize her good fortune after surviving what she calls “a very tough decade,” during which she lost both her parents and went through a vicious divorce and custody battle with her fourth husband, Peter Cook. “There’s nothing harder than seeing your loved ones suffer,” says Brinkley, whose mother, Marjorie, died of a heart attack following a stroke in 2012, just weeks after herhusband, Donald,passed away following a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. “And to go through a divorce—and a very public one—at the same time? It was a tough time; there’s no two ways about it.” The model faced a tabloid frenzy when it was discovered that Cook was cheating with his teenage assistant in 2006. The pair fought over custody of children Jack,now 21 (Brinkley’s sonwithexRicky Taubman, whom Cook adopted at age 4), and Sailor, now 18. But Brinkley (who is also mom to Alexa Ray Joel, 30, with ex-husband Billy Joel) says she

prefers not to dwell on dark times. “I went through a lot,” she says. “But you have to stay strong for your kids. You can be in absolute agony, but when you see your kids, you have to be like, ‘Hey, guys!’ ” Brinkley says she found strength from the website One Mom’s Battle, which she calls “a support group for women dealing with a narcissist”—and in performing live on Broadway during a stint inChicago. “For the three hours that the show was on, nothing else existed,” she says. “It was a complete escape.” Brinkley says overcoming the drama of her divorce may have also made her appreciate her other ex Billy Joel, who married for the fourth time last year. “He just sent me a video of him with his new baby, and she’s so adorable,” Brinkley says, breaking into a warm smile. “It’s really nice that we get along so well. That’s what you want in a relationship. It’s somebody that’s been a big part of your life. That’s the way it should be.” When it comes to her own romantic future, Brinkley is coy. Despite reports that she and John Mellencamp may wed after dating for the past year, Brinkley says, “you never really know what’s going to happen. John and I are two people that
have very full lives. We’re just trying to enjoy each other when we can see each other and try not to put too much [pressure] on it.” The pair first met last year when the singer, 67, asked a mutual friend for her number. After being largely single for seven years, “I was actually surprised,” says Brinkley. “It’s always nice to hear that someone’s interested.” But when they met up for the first time, at a Hamptons movie screening, “I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, we’re really opposites,’ ” she recalls. “He’s kind of a throwback from another time, like a silent cowboy. But then we talked and realized that we do have a lot of shared interests.” The couple bonded over their kids (Mellencamp has five, plus six grandkids) as well as their age. “I know guys that go out with girls that are so, so young. They’ll throw some reference out, and they’re like, ‘What’s that?’ ” Brinkley says with a laugh. “When it comes to relationships, there is something nice about just being the same age.” They also share a mutual love of music and art. This spring Brinkley joined Mellencamp on his U.S. tour; when they’re home (at either of Brinkley’s two homes in the Hamptons or at Mellencamp’s home base of Daufuskie Island, S.C.), they do oil paintings together. “I could never paint in front of anybody. You don’t want to be judged,” Brinkley says. “But with John I don’t have that feeling. It’s just great to be side by side.” Now, with her daughter heading to college in the fall, Brinkley is preparing to adjust to her new life as a soon-to-be empty nester. “Just talking about my daughter graduating, I get all choked up—and here I go again,” Brinkley says, suddenly tearing up. “You know there’s different stages in life. My child-rearing years are over. I have friends going through the empty-nest thing, and it has hit some of them pretty hard. But I know that we’re a tightknit family, and we’ll see each other plenty.” The model plans to downsize from her palatial estate to her smaller beachfront “party house” in Sag Harbor, N.Y., and a pied-à-terre in Manhattan. And yes, she realizes how that sounds. “I can’t even feel sorry for myself,” she says with a laugh. “Because I’m here, I’m alive, and I’ve had an inordinate amount of luck.” Whatever comes next, “I was taught to count my blessings,” Brinkley says, “and I always start the same way: Alexa, Jack, Sailor. I’ve got three beautiful, wonderful, healthy kids. I have so much to be grateful for.”

etails of the nightmare that unspooled on Halloween 1975 still come vividly to Dorthy Moxley: the yellow Schwinn bike her daughter Martha left on the porch of their Greenwich, Conn., home, the blue down parka the 15-year-old was wearing when she skipped out the door with friends the night before—and the morning knock at a neighbor’s door after waking to discover Martha hadn’t come home. “I walked over to the Skakels,’” Moxley says almost 41 years later. “Michael answered the door. He said she wasn’t there. I remember he was barefoot.” Within hours Martha’s body— bludgeoned and stabbed with a broken golf club—was found hidden beneath a pine tree in her own yard. It would take 25 years before a suspect—Michael Skakel—was arrested and another two to see the Kennedy cousin sent to prison for murder. Moxley, now 84, sat through every court hearing, every day at trial. She has no doubt: “Michael is the one who swung the club.” That certainty is now under assault like never before. tion with Moxley’s murder. Neither could be reached for comment for this story. Says prosecutor Benedict, who at press time had not yet seen the book: “[Skakel’s] conviction was the result of a strong case of evidence, the most telling of which came from Mr. Skakel’s own mouth, and reached despite the efforts of an experienced, savvy and energetic defense attorney.” On that fateful last day of Martha’s life, Skakel and his brother Tommy, then 17, had been sitting in their driveway, listening to music in their father’s Lincoln, when Martha, on whom both boys admitted to having a crush, joined them with two of her friends. Martha’s friends say they left her fooling around with Tommy near the Skakel swimming pool. That was the last time anyone confirms seeing her alive. Police believe she was killed as she headed home. free, albeit with a tracking device on his ankle or wrist, after a judge in 2013 ordered a new trial on the grounds that Skakel’s original defense lawyer did a shoddy job. While prosecutor Jonathan Benedict appeals that decision and argues that Skakel, now 55, should go straight back to prison, his first cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is helping Skakel gird for a new trial. Kennedy, son of the slain Sen. Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Skakel, is out with a new book, Framed (see excerpt), which claims to reveal new evidence exonerating Skakel and pointing instead to Adolph Hasbrouck and Burr Tinsley, two New York City teens who have allegedly admitted to being at the scene of the crime that 1975 night. The two men—Hasbrouck is now 56 and Tinsley 57—have invoked the Fifth Amendment in refusing to testify and have never been charged in connec-

More than two decades passed without an arrest in the case. But at a grand jury investigation that began in June 1998, several of Michael Skakel’s former schoolmates testified and one said that Skakel boasted, “I’m going to get away with murder. I’m a Kennedy.” That testimony, along with Skakel’s lengthy 1997 interview with a potential biographer that prosecutors cast as incriminating, helped convict Skakel. Says Kennedy: “There were a lot of suspects who had much stronger evidence against them than Michael.” As Skakel awaits a Connecticut supreme court ruling as to whether there will be a new trial, Moxley, who now lives in New Jersey (the Greenwich home was razed years ago), feels victimized anew. “It is not easy to do this over and over again,” she says. “But I am supporting the prosecution until the day I die.”

n 2003 a former classmate of Michael’s named Crawford Mills told Robert F. Kennedy Jr. that Crawford’s friend Tony Bryant (a cousin of the NBA’s Kobe Bryant) had been in Belle Haven the night Martha was murdered and knew who the killers were. They were friends of Tony’s, and they had allegedly confessed their involvement to him. RFK Jr. decided to look into the claim. I tracked down and spoke to the two men—Adolph Hasbrouck and Burton Tinsley—and tape-recorded their damning admissions. I found corroborative evidence of their role in the murder in ancient newspaper clippings, in forgotten 40-year-old police interviews, in hair samples taken from Martha’s body, in the memories of numerous witnesses who had their own frightening encounters with the two boys that night. Because of incompetence and corruption, all of this evidence went unheralded by police and prosecutors for decades. In the end, I came away convinced not only that Tony Bryant had told the truth and that his two friends murdered Martha but that the calculated actions of an ambitious prosecutor with elastic ethics and a crooked police detective with a seething antipathy toward my family had sent Michael to jail and protected the real killers from facing justice. In 1975, Adoph and Burr were 15 and very large for their age. Adolph, a volatile teen from the South Bronx, was African American, six foot three and 200 pounds. Burr, who Tony reckoned to be of Asian/American-Indian/ Caucasian ancestry, was of similar height and build. The two accompanied Tony, [who was friends with Martha], to Belle Haven five or six times [in the fall of] 1975. From his first sight of Martha, [Tony told me], Adolph became “obsessed” with her. He predicted he would “grab her and have her the way he wanted her.” On several occasions, he said he wanted to “go caveman on her.” Tony said “going caveman” meant hitting a woman on the head, grabbing her by the hair, dragging her off to the bushes and sexually assaulting her. On Mischief Night, Oct. 30, 1975, Adolph and Burr accompanied Tony to the Skakels’ property.
They briefly hung out with a group of teens, including Martha, in the meadow, smoking marijuana and drinking beer. By about 9 pm, Adolph and Burr, inebriated and “out of control,” [according to Tony], began making sexually charged comments to some of the girls. Brandishing the Skakel golf clubs, they worked themselves into a frenzy. Tony [said] Adolph kept repeating, “I’m going to get me a girl” and “I’ve got my caveman club.” By 9:15 Tony, fearing trouble, took the last train back to New York City. Michael’s sister Julie would testify at his trial that at around 9:30 she and her friend Andrea Shakespeare saw two figures, larger than her brothers, running in the darkness outside the house. Julie told me that after [taking Andrea home] she pulled back into the driveway at 9:50 p.m. At that moment, Michael’s brother Tommy and Martha would have been completing [the] sexual horseplay [he admitted they engaged in] behind the toolshed. Julie saw a dark figure running in a crouched position, carrying an object in his left hand. She recalls that he was large and possibly hooded. He dashed across the driveway and disappeared behind the tool shed. This would put him within a few feet of Martha and Tommy, just as Martha was leaving for home. The following Monday, when Tony saw Adolph and Burr at school, they were “swaggering.” “We achieved one of our fantasies. . . . We got her caveman style,” Adolph said. While Adolph and Burr never mentioned the victim by name, “I knew exactly who they were taking about,” [Tony told me]. “They were talking about Martha Moxley.”

In style, with champagne toasts and “dear, dear friends” in Paris, where she has lived since the 1950s. Asked if any role would tempt her to return to the screen, she responds with typical grace: “I’m content with the role that life has given me: a centenarian!” In an e-mail interview with People, the Hollywood legend addressed her life’s great dramas—onscreen and off.

Born to British parents in Japan, she landed her first big film role in 1935’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with James Cagney. “Making movies was an entirely new, unexpected, alien experience, performed in a huge, closed, barnlike structure, and instead of enacting one’s role in continuity, one did so out of order, in bits and pieces,” she remembers. She starred opposite Errol Flynn for eight movies, including Robin Hood. Their chemistry led to a lifetime of rumors—but Flynn was married. De Havilland has always insisted their connection was never consummated: “There are no words to describe my feelings for Errol Flynn,” she says now. She was drawn toGone with the Wind, she says, because of her character “Melanie’s extraordinary compassion.” She lost the Oscar to costar Hattie McDaniel—which meant her younger sister, actress Joan Fontaine, with whom she had a lifelong feud, won an Oscar before her. She calls Fontaine, who died in 2013, “a brilliant person, very gifted, and, alas, [with] an astigmatism in her perception of people, which could cause great distress in others.” De Havilland, who wed twice and had two children, turned down roles in It’s a Wonderful Life (because of her “high school sort of prewar romance” with Stewart) and as Blanche DuBois in A Streetcar Named Desire: “Having just given birth to my son Benjamin, I was not in a state of mind in which I could relate to Blanche.” Friend Vivien Leigh, she adds, “was a good choice.” In Paris she lives in a “little white house, as tall and narrow as a chimney,” she detailed in her newly rereleased 1962 memoirEvery Frenchman Has One, and still climbs the stairs to her office each day. One regret is that she never graduated from college: “The scholarship I won in 1934 is still waiting for me!”

hen Stephen and Ayesha Curry first started dating, his palate was admittedly limited. “He was a frozen pizza, chicken tenders, alfredo pasta type of guy,” Ayesha says. After nearly five years of marriage, her skills in the kitchen have opened up a new world of cuisine for the NBA superstar. “Now he eats sashimi. He’s really broadened his horizons. It’s incredible.” With her first cookbook, The Seasoned Life (out in September), an upcoming Cooking Channel show and a pop-up restaurant in their hometown of San Francisco, Ayesha, 27, is quickly racking up credentials on the culinary scene. “I am a firm believer that food makes people feel something. It makes people feel good, warm and happy,” she says. “That’s the most rewarding thing for me, when somebody takes that first bite and I see a smile. It’s probably the same adrenaline rush Steph gets when he plays a game.” Growing up in Toronto with a JamaicanChinese mother and a Polish-African American father, Ayesha was introduced to a wide range of food at a young age and had an appetite that was “never filtered.” This attitude toward eating has not only rubbed off on Steph, 28, but also influenced how they raise their two daughters, Riley, 3, and Ryan, 1. “Riley is very hands-on in the kitchen,” says Ayesha. “It’s become our favorite thing to do together, because her palate opens up and she’s willing to try the things she helps me cook.” And it’s Steph’s intense training schedule as a point guard for the Golden State Warriors that makes him the ideal subject for tasting her recipes. “I don’t have a very strict diet because I run so much, so I can eat really whatever I want —STEPHEN CURRY to,” he says. “Anything she’s cooking that day, I’ll eat.” Despite her culinary chops, Ayesha considers herself a “relaxed lifestyle expert” who doesn’t obsess over making everything Pinterest-perfect. “Entertaining gives me anxiety,” she admits. “I’m the most disorganized person on the face of the planet, but the whole message I’m trying to send is, that’s okay. You can have organized chaos.” Part of overcoming that

SMOKED SALMON SCRAMBLE 8 large eggs 2 tbsp. heavy cream 1⁄ 2 tsp. kosher salt 1⁄ 2 tsp. black pepper 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil 1⁄ 2 cup fresh corn kernels (from 1 ear) 4 oz. smoked salmon, cut into strips 1⁄ 2 cup halved cherry tomatoes 1 tbsp. chopped fresh dill
1. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, cream, salt and pepper. 2. In a large skillet, over medium low, heat the oil. Pour in the egg mixture, and begin to scramble, gently pushing the eggs around the pan with a spatula, about 1 minute. 3. Add the corn, and cook until the eggs are nearly done, 1 to 2 more minutes, and fold in the smoked salmon and tomatoes. Remove the pan from the heat, and allow the residual heat to warm the salmon and tomatoes through. Sprinkle dill on top and serve immediately. Serves: 4 Active time: 15 minutes Total time: 15 minutes

Cooking has been a passion for Ayesha since age 13—one year before she met Steph at their church youth group in Charlotte, N.C. “He was the cute boy at church who all of the girls were obsessed with, so I made a generalization that he wasn’t for me,” she laughs. Years later, when she was acting and modeling in Los Angeles and Steph was playing college basketball for Davidson, the two reconnected when he was in town for the ESPYs. “He was so funny and silly, the absolute opposite of what I thought he was going to be.” It was that funny guy who finally gave her the confidence to turn her cooking hobby into a career, encouraging her

1. Preheat oven to 450°. Generously grease a 10-in. cast-iron skillet with cooking spray. Whisk together brown sugar, baking powder, salt, baking soda and 2 cups of the flour in a large bowl. Add the cold butter, and use a fork or your hands to cut the butter into the flour until a crumbly mixture forms and the butter is about the size of peas. Add the mascarpone, and mix gently with your hands. Pour in the milk, and stir with a wooden spoon or rubber spatula until the dough just starts to come together. 2. Dust a clean work surface with remaining 1⁄ 4 cup flour. Transfer the dough to the surface, and pat into a 1-in.-thick disk.
Using a 2-in. round cookie cutter, cut out the biscuits. Gather up any scraps and press them together, and then form the dough into a disk and cut again to use it all. 3. Nestle the biscuits in the cast-iron skillet. Brush the tops with the melted butter, and sprinkle with the black pepper. Bake until the tops are golden brown, about 25 minutes. Cool for 5 minutes, then drizzle honey over the top. Serve warm with jam. Serves: 6 Active time: 15 minutes Total time: 45 minutes

More than 3.6 million Instagram followers later, Ayesha has carved out a space for herself in the digital sphere— somethingshe admits is adouble-edged sword where she often finds herself “a victim of reading the comments.” She most recently experienced the wrath of the Internet after posting (and then deleting) a tweet calling the NBA “rigged” following the Warriors’ loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 6 of the finals. “I was just a fan in that moment, so I didn’t think about the ramifications,” she says. “It hurt my feelings because I didn’t intend to hurt anybody. Obviously, what I wrote is not what I think about what Steph does for a living.” Through everything, Steph maintains his unwavering support of his wife. “I tell her, ‘Keep being you. Don’t
worry about what people are going to say. No matter who you are, they are going to try to find something to try to get under your skin,’ ” he says. It’s this strong bond that has led many fans to put the family’s life on a pedestal— something they don’t necessarily advocate either. “We want to represent the right things because that’s who we are,” Steph says, “but we don’t like when people say ‘#RelationshipGoals’ and stuff. I want people to understand they have to live their own lives the way they want to and not just do what we do.” To Ayesha what matters most is the example she is setting for her children. “What I want to represent for my daughters is that you can always stay true to yourself and still be successful,” she says. “You can have your cake and eat it too and follow your passions, have a family and be happy.” —SHAY SPENCE

2 tbsp. plus 1 tsp. kosher salt, divided 1 lb. spaghetti 1⁄ 4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 6 garlic cloves 21⁄ 2 cups whole peeled San Marzano tomatoes 1 cup torn basil, divided 1 cup halved cherry tomatoes 1 tbsp. unsalted butter 1⁄ 2 tsp. black pepper 5 oz. ParmigianoReggiano, grated, divided 1. Bring 2 quarts water and 2 tablespoons salt to a boil in a large stockpot over mediumhigh heat. Add spaghetti, and cook until pasta is 2⁄ 3 cooked, about 7 minutes. 2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add garlic, and cook until golden, about 5 minutes. Discard garlic. 3. Process San Marzano tomatoes in a blender until smooth. Add to skillet, and cook until reduced by 1⁄ 3, about 10 minutes. Drain spaghetti, and add to tomato sauce; stir to combine. Add meatballs (recipe follows) and 1⁄ 2 cup basil. Cook, stirring occasionally, until sauce thickens,

ParmigianoReggiano, grated 11⁄ 2 cups heavy cream 1 large egg 11⁄ 2 tsp. kosher salt 1⁄ 2 tsp. black pepper 1. Preheat oven to 400°. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add onion, garlic and rosemary; cook, stirring often, until softened, about 5 minutes. Transfer to a large bowl, and cool completely. 2. Add beef, cheese, cream, egg, salt and pepper to onion mixture; gently fold just until combined. Chill until firm, about 15 minutes. 3. Shape mixture into 30 meatballs. After graduating from the Culinary Institute of America, he studied underAlain Sailhac before becoming executive chef at the 21 Club in New York City. Today the father of three (Madeline, 9, Anna, 7, and George, 2) with wife and business partner Margaret, 37, cites the open kitchen in his Manhattan apartment as his favorite room. “Nooneneedsalivingroomanymore,”saysZakarian. “I want the kids to understand the noise and smellofthekitchenwhilethey’rehangingaround, because it gets into your body, and then that’s the memory.” Now the owner of six restaurants— including the Lambs Club in New York City and his latest, Georgie (named after his youngest), and the Garden Bar, both at the Montage Beverly Hills—Zakarian thrives on the sort of “controlled chaos” that comes with working in the food business. “There’s never a point where my life is balanced,” he says. “Anyone who tells you ‘I have a good balance’ is lying to you.” —ANA CALDERONE

ominique Crenn doesn’t play by the rules. At her five-year-old San Francisco restaurant, Atelier Crenn, guests are greeted with a poem written by the chef instead of a menu and are served 20 courses of artistic dishes inspired by her life. “I want to give people an experience,” says Crenn, 51, who also runs a more casual restaurant, Petit Crenn. “I wanted to create something magical.” Her philosophy has paid off. The first woman in America to receive two Michelin Stars, Crenn was recently crowned the World’s Best Female Chef 2016

And she is happy right where she is, living on a street lined with Victorian homes in the heart of the city. “When I got my place, I made sure it wasn’t within walking distance to my restaurants,” she says. “It’s my haven. cup finely chopped shallots tbsp. Champagne vinegar cup capers, drained, rinsed and chopped tbsp. finely chopped fresh thyme tbsp. finely chopped anchovies tbsp. Meyer lemon zest, plus more for garnish cups olive oil oz. hard cow’s-milk cheese (like Mimolette) heads little gem lettuce or other
small lettuce heads 1 cup thinly sliced radishes 1 tsp. kosher salt 1⁄ 2 tsp. black pepper 3 tbsp. fresh basil 3 tbsp. fresh mint 3 tbsp. fresh flat-leaf parsley or chervil 1. Stir together shallots and Champagne vinegar in a medium bowl; let stand 20 minutes. 2. Preheat oven to 350°. Stir capers, thyme, anchovies and lemon zest into vinegar mixture. Whisk in olive oil until well combined. 3. Finely grate cheese, and spread a thin and even
layer on a parchmentpaper-lined baking sheet. Bake until golden brown and crispy, about 15 minutes. Cool completely, about 5 minutes. Break into pieces. 4. Cut lettuce heads into fourths; add to a medium bowl with radish slices, and season with salt and pepper. Toss salad with the caper vinaigrette. Divide among serving plates. Top each with basil, mint and parsley, and garnish with lemon zest, if desired. Serve with cheese shards. Serves: 5 Active time: 20 minutes Total time: 45 minutes

I walked onto the set of Annihilation and put my hair up in a ponytail [and said], “I want you to cut it so I can donate it.” And snip!
What’ll Happen to Jane’s Hair? Her character will don a wig when the show returns this fall—though a haircut will be integrated into the story line. “There’s a very specific reason why it happens,” she says. “I’m excited.”
They put the ponytail in my hand. I felt like the hair I was holding was the culmination of what people were identifying me with in the industry.
After, I went on an incredible journey of rediscovering my beauty. Much of it was tumultuous because people online gave their opinion. Five years ago no one would have given a s--- if I cut my hair. Now I have almost a million people on Instagram who gave their say. But I’m okay because I can look at myself and say, “This is a beautiful woman.” What products do you use to look and feel your best? I bathe in coconut oil. Right before I’m done taking a shower, I cover my body with it and then do a quick rinse in cold water. Then when I put lotion on, my skin feels like butter. She’s there because of my heart, not because I am wearing full-blown makeup and I can take a duck-face selfie.
