‘Even in my life with Jada, like, I’m a hopeless romantic, but romance is not love. Love is really born of surviving with somebody.’ —WILL SMITH, on what he’s learned about the message of love while working on Collateral Beauty,to People

‘We’re just rooting for Kanye to get better, to feel better. We’re all fans of his and want him to be well and be able to do what he loves to do.’

You also worked with Tudyk on Firefly. How did that experience inspire Con Man? The idea of it being two guys who are on a failed sci-fi series is the truth. But one guy rocketing to stardom while the other guy floundered in convention land? That part’s not so true.

—JOHN LEGEND, on supporting friend Kanye West, on Watch What Happens Live

C Man is a departure Con from Castle—what do you like about both? With Castle, I cannot shake a stick at the kind of o success we experienced. B But Con Man is a signal to m me that we could do a show for fans by fans. When you aren’t working, what does a perfect day entail? Sleeping in, some Tim Hortons coffee, spicy tuna on a crunchy rice cake and a bad movie! —BRIANNE TRACY

On Dec. 26, 1996, JonBenét Ramsey was found beaten and strangled in the basement of her family’s Boulder, Colo., mansion. Twenty years later, the mystery surrounding the murder of the 6-year-old beauty queen remains. People Magazine Investigates revisits the unsolved case as police try to determine whether JonBenét was killed by an intruder or by someone in her family. In JonBenét: The Untold Truth, airing Dec. 19 at 10 p.m. ET on Investigation Discovery, investigators reanalyze evidence from the crime scene as well as recent allegations that JonBenét was killed by her brother Burke, then age 9. Ramsey family attorney L. Lin Wood denies that Burke, now a software developer in Indianapolis, had any involvement, and tells People the key to JonBenét’s killer lies in the DNA profile drawn from an apparent saliva sample taken from her underwear. “That profile is the profile of the killer,” he says. “The question is whether we’ll ever get a match.” —JEFF TRUESDELL

You’ve been performing for over 70 years. When did you feel as though you’d made it? I had a wonderful time growing up in Queens and dreaming about coming to the big city to make it—it all happened [in 1962] with my song “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.” Which goals do you still hope to accomplish? I’d love to do a second album with Lady Gaga. She was performing at a benefit the first time I met her. I told her backstage, “You were terrific! None of the scenes from Chasing Cameron are faked. It was hard for me to work with the crew at first, and they had to chase me around at times to put the mic on. But now my fans see the truth.

SEXIER THAN EVER AT 63

THE FRENCH FILM GODDESS IS STILL STEAMING UP THE SCREEN IN ELLE AND THINGS TO COME. BONJOUR, OSCAR?

Newly nominated for a Golden Globe for Elle, Huppert is also likely to get an Oscar nod.

Tell us about playing a videogame exec who plots revenge against her rapist in Elle. She cannot be defined in any one way. When bad things happen to her, she wants to take control of them. The audience can only guess why she does what she does. She’s an enigma. How did you prepare for the role? [The director] Paul Verhoeven and I never discussed the character. I felt like I was a sculptor with a huge piece of mud, shaping it in the way I wanted, without any limitations. He also made the movie Showgirls. Showgirls is considered a great film in France, as are many of his films that are considered controversial. That’s what I like about him. He does nothing to please.

In Things to Come you play a professor whose husband leaves her for a younger woman. Have you experienced ageism? I don’t feel old, so it’s not an issue for me. I think we are too much obsessed with this question. Men are never questioned this way. What do you think of our obsession with Frenchwomen, from thinness to bringing up bébé? I don’t exercise at all, I’m afraid. I walk a lot and I eat simple things. As for raising children, I was never strict. But I think the grass is always greener. We also think the same of Americans: having the perfect body and being so efficient. Maybe we’re all the same! —LIZ McNEIL

I once had fans knock on my door and ask me if they could watch me sleep. They were twins, and after we took photos, they ran inside and then asked if they could watch me sleep, promising, “We will be quiet.’’ 4

I can’t do meet-andgreets at schools. There are some places I just can’t go to because I’ll get mobbed! THE LIE 2. “My mom let me travel to New York on my own at 18. I was very surprised! But my family is very happy for me.”

THE ENGLISH STARS OF THE AFFAIR GET CANDID ABOUT THEIR COMPLICATED, SEXY DRAMA The Affair is back for year 3! Where are we now in the lives of your characters? I know we time-hop a bit. WILSON In my storyline

we jump ahead two years, and then in another episode we leap another year, so it’s quite odd. I actually don’t have many scenes with Dominic this year, which is sad because we have great chemistry. And the crux of the series was initially about them, but now it’s more about Dom’s individual decline.

WEST We had one episode together—didn’t we, darling?— which was fun, running around Block Island. WILSON Yeah, back where it all started. Brendan Fraser plays a new character this season. What’s he like? WEST He’s hilarious. He’s

a comedy genius, but he also plays my tormenter. I think he’s about to experience a huge renaissance. So many bad things happen as a result of your affair—is the point of the show to not

glamorize infidelity? WEST Are you suggesting

that if you have an affair you may end up killing someone and wind up in jail with Brendan Fraser?! WILSON Oh, stop. But yes, I think that’s the overarching theme, that there are consequences to acting outside of your marriage. But Dominic, despite all the stuff that happens to you, every character still wants to sleep with you! WEST Then why do you refuse to do the love scenes with me? You always get a body double! WILSON I’ve done enough of those with you, Dommy! It’s time to let someone else have a go now.

You’re both from the U.K.— do you hang out when you’re in London? WEST I’ve never been

invited round. Ruth says weekly, “Oh, you must see my new place in London,” with her fingers crossed firmly behind her back. WILSON Four months of filming out of the year is enough with you. I’ve heard many married couples tell you they can’t watch the show together. WEST They do, and I think

that’s normal. It’s the ones who watch it with their spouses that I worry about! I watch it with my husband. WEST Oh, I’m just kidding

then, of course it’s normal. —GILLIAN TELLING PEOPLE December 26, 2016

New star in the galaxy: Jones risks her life in the battle against the Empire.

1

The saga’s first stand-alone film charts an exciting new course with Felicity Jones FANTASY Set shortly before the events of Episode IV—the original 1977 Star Wars—the most anticipated film of the holiday season follows a dynamic new heroine on a mission to steal the plans for the Death Star. Jyn Erso (Jones; see p. 96) leads a ragtag group into battle after receiving a cryptic message from her estranged father, scientist Galen Erso (Mads Mikkelsen), who’s had a hand in the Death Star’s creation. Her backup team includes resourceful, brash Capt. Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), a sarcastic, scenestealing droid, K-2SO (Alan Tudyk), and some fine, seasoned fighters (Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen). Director Gareth Edwards (Godzilla) delivers a weightier, darker Star Wars film than usual, but he hasn’t gone rogue: While not meant to be an episode in the greater intergalactic narrative, this one delivers both crowd-pleasing cameos from familiar faces and, most crucially, the rousing thrills that leave the galaxy wanting more. Stone and Gosling in a magical moment.

Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling gotta sing, gotta dance, gotta love MUSICAL People fall in and out of love all the time without bursting into song, but in our hearts we know this is what we’d like to do—maybe even dance a gentle pas de deux with our significant other in the park at sunset. Director Damien Chazelle’s sublime new movie musical—a bittersweet fable about the romance of an aspiring actress and a brooding jazz musician—makes these conventions seem natural, simple and irresistibly spontaneous. Stone and Gosling’s singing voices are, at best, sweetly plain, but their chemistry is so direct—the arrows so cleanly shot and so deeply lodged in each other’s heart—you wish their duet could la-la-last forever. T

arek and Christina El Moussa have long been known to bicker. In fact, it was part of their charm: As the husband and wife team would undertake risky renovations and flip houses for profit on their hit HGTV series Flip or Flop, they would often fight over such things as the cost of bathroom tile and granite countertops and whether to bother with new flooring. When they remodeled their own Yorba Linda, Calif., home last year, it was even worse. “The first remodel was about 25 percent in, and we were lying in bed at night, and Christina looks over at me and says, ‘I don’t like the house,’ ” Tarek told People in August. “So to make a happy wife and a happy life, we started over.” Turnsoutthewhole“happywife, happylife”thing didn’t exactly work out. On Dec. 12 fans of the show were shocked to learn that the couple, who are parents to daughter Taylor, 6, and son Braydon, 16 months, had secretly split after seven years of marriage following a bizarre altercation last May during which police say Christina feared her husband was suicidal. According to police, a “crying and shaking” Christina called 911 on May 23 after Tarek fled their home with a gun in his backpack, leapedoverthefenceofhisbackyardintoparkland and ran off down a hiking trail following an argument. A total of 11 officers and a helicopter were dispatched to the scene; a compliant Tarek insisted he was not suicidal and voluntarily surrendered his entireguncollectionfor 30days. Inthewake ofthe unflattering news, the couple were quick to quell speculation that marital trouble had resulted in the stand-off. “Tarek was going on a hike and took a gun for protection from mountain lions, bobcats, coyotesandrattlesnakes,”the pairexplainedtoPeople exclusively in an e-mail interview on Dec. 12. “His intentions were misread.Once[police]werethere it was determined that he had no negative intentions towards himself or anyone else.” (Of Tarek’s newly revealed passion for gun collecting—he has at least five at the home and posted an Instagram video of himself shooting an AR-15 rifle, one of which he owns, at a gun range last month—the star explains, “Safety is paramount. The guns are kept unloaded in a locked gun safe.”) In the wake of what the couple now insist was a “nonincident” (“There was no violence, there was no threat, there were no arrests,” they say, though they offered no explanation for why Christina was so distraught when she called 911), they sought marriage counseling and ultimately decided to

“One of the dynamics on the show that bothered Tarek is that he’s always in the wrong and she’s always right,” says a source who has worked alongside the couple (at work on their various houseflipping projects, right). “He felt like his masculinity took a hit on the show.”

separate. Today they are surprisingly candid about their decision to move on even before their split was made public. “We have both dated other people following the separation, but neither of us is ready to announce anything in terms of another relationship,” the couple say, adding that they have every intention to keep putting on a happy face for the public. “We plan to continue working together in front of the camera,” say the pair, who will resume filming for HGTV following the split and are releasing a book, Flip Your Life, in March. “We have been working towards this for the past five years, and, as you can imagine, fame is a mixed bag. We decided to separate while we reevaluated the next steps in our married life. . . . We believed this was in the best interests of the children and the best way to determine a path forward.” While they seem to address their split in a matter-of-fact manner, for Tarek, 35, and Christina, 33, the breakup punctuates a traumatic three years, during which they dealt with the anxiety of both cancer and infertility. After launching their HGTV series in 2013, the real estate agents and interior designers were dealt a shocking blow when Tarek was diagnosed with thyroid cancer after an avid fan of the show repeatedly e-mailed producers saying she noticed a lump on Tarek’s neck. A biopsy confirmed their worst fears—cancer that had spread to his lymph nodes. “They said they would be done with the biopsy in an hour, but it ended up being four hours and they ended up removing my entire thyroid,” Tarek told People at the time. “When I woke up, my wife was crying and the first thing I said was, ‘It’s cancer, isn’t it?’ It was a nightmare.” After banking his sperm, Tarek was forced to TOP: CHRISTA RENEE

“I was having a harder time swallowing, and this lump was getting bigger . . . and they initially said it was nothing,” Tarek told People after his cancer diagnosis in 2013 (right). After several failed attempts to get pregnant, Christina said baby Brayden (above, with his big sister Taylor, in 2015) “is the happiest baby—it was so worth it.”

Christina, meanwhile, worried she would lose another pregnancy. “At around 6 weeks pregnant I started spotting, so I thought that we lost the baby again, and my husband was laid up, and I had to just go upstairs and cry,” she said. But as the couple celebrated the arrival of Brayden James with a People photo shoot in October 2015, their seemingly playful bickering was back in full force. At the time, it seemed like a sign that the dark clouds had passed. “He never changed one of Taylor’s diapers, and I think he has changed one of Brayden’s. He has a bad gag reflex,” Christina complained indignantly during a 2015 interview, adding that she was on her own for midnight feedings and was the only family member who never got breakfast in bed. “I am not

Although Tarekhassplurgedonahigh-priceitemsincluding a Lamborghini and an extensive watch collection, “she has champagne tastes, and he’s a beer-from-acan kind of guy. That was okay for a while, when all they could afford was canned beer. Back then, they were on the same page, working together to make it and to do the best with what they had.” The pair first met in 2005 when Tarek was a 24-year-old real estate agent making a name for himself selling multimillion-dollar homes in Orange County, Calif., and Christina, just 22, was a newbie real estate agent. They started working together selling houses but were forced to downsize their lifestyles drastically after the 2008 housing-market crash, trading in their $6,000-a-month rental for a $700-a-month apartment. Dead broke and forced to share Subway sandwiches for dinner as the market bottomed out, they decided to wed in 2009. They also reconceived their business: buying up foreclosure properties at bargain-basement prices and flipping them for a profit. In 2010 Tarek’s friend filmed an HGTV audition tape of them,

Their reality show premiered in 2013 with the couple making a reported $10,000 per episode. Now in its seventh season, Flip or Flop has become one of the network’s most popular shows; HGTV currently plans to keep airing episodes filmed before news of the split broke.

An Endorsement Deal They signed on to create their own line of tiles: “Our collection is called the Diamond Collection, because I like diamonds,” Christina told People in September. “We’ll use it in all of our flips.”

Their Personal Real Estate The couple’s Orange County house is worth an estimated $2 million. Christina has continued to live there post-split, though some neighbors have already had issues with streets being clogged during filming.

For months after separating, the couple filmed episodes of the show and even cozy holiday-themed promotional ads for HGTV; it is unclear whether the network was aware of the pair’s true relationship status while the stars put up a happy facade. For now, the plan is to proceed full-speed ahead with their business commitments together, even if they’re no longer a couple. “We plan to continue our professional life together by being professional, bydoing ourjobswell, bybeing prepared and by working hard,” the couple explain. Though they are currently living apart, the pair say they have no imminent plans to file for divorce and call talk of custody arrangements “premature.” They are clear, however, that their main concern is creating a healthy environment for their two kids. “The most difficult part of the decision to separate was the kids. We want the best for them, and we’re doing everything we can to ensure that,” they say. “We hope that we can get to a better place and that ourkidswillcontinuetobeaswell-adjusted,bright and loving as they are now.”

She’s beautiful, has a good, strong design sense, and this is all sort of a dream come true for some girl who was just selling real estate a few years ago.” Tarek, on the other hand, has struggled. Sources havewitnessed him complain about his many work commitments, flub lines on-camera and balk at the special brand of “acting” required of a reality star. “While Christina would be on board for plotlines that producers came up with like freaking out over the wrong tile being delivered or finding a dead rodent in the corner, Tarek was always more reluctant,” says the source. “He’d pull it off, but he was never going to be a natural. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if at some point he hit a breaking point.” Despite the split, a source says Christina, for

part of a noble, heroic future,” Sullenberger tells People. “Our society still did big things then, and the possibilities seemed boundless.” Even to those intrepid types who make a living by traveling into outer space, Glenn stood out for his cool, focused professionalism. “We were behind the Soviets, and he’s the guy who got us caught up and basically laid the groundwork for us to eventually beat the Soviets to the moon,” says former Space Shuttle commander Mark Kelly.

Glenn and the Kennedys An early hero of JFK’s space program, Glenn became a close friend of both John Kennedy (left, with Glenn in 1962) and Robert Kennedy (right, with wife Ethel in 1967). In fact Glenn was campaigning with RFK when he was assassinated in Los Angeles in 1968. “John stayed up all night with us that night,” says RFK’s son Bobby. “He was like a member of our family.”

n the final hours before John Glenn became the first American to venture into the dark abyss of space and orbit the Earth in 1962, he spoke to his wife, Annie, from the cramped confines of his Friendship 7 capsule. “Well, I’m going down to the corner store and buy some chewing gum,” Glenn reassured her over his headset—just as he always had before leaving home for his high-risk missions as a Marine aviator in World War II and the Korean War. “Don’t take too long,” replied Annie, his high school sweetheart, who was among the millions riveted to their TV screens as her husband’s unpredictable Atlas rocket left the launch pad. By the time the freckled-faced astronaut’s four-hour, 56-minute flight splashed down in the Atlantic, Glenn—who died on Dec. 8 at age 95—had become a bona fide American hero. In the decades that followed, Glenn, a clean-cut, good-natured, fiercely patriotic Midwesterner who later spent 24 years in the Senate, inspired a nation—along with a generation of future aviators including Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who had his own brush with fame after landing a US Airways jet on New York’s Hudson River in 2009. “He inspired me to want to be

“He’s a colleague, but I think I speak for most astronauts when I say he’s also our hero.”

Raised in New Concord, Ohio, by John Sr., who owned

a plumbing business, and Clara, a teacher, young John was heavily influenced by the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. “When WWII came along, he knew what he had to do,” recalls Mike McCurry, who served as press secretary for Glenn’s 1984 presidential bid. “He felt a sense of outrage that many people did.” Instilled with what Nick Taylor, who cowrote Glenn’s 1999 memoir, called a sense of “dedication to service as well as doing what you have to do to fight for freedom” that he learned from his father, Glenn left Muskingum College in New Concord to become a Naval air cadet. Glenn flew 59 combat His Life on Film missions in WWII and Actor Glen Powell another 90 in the Korean (above, with Octavia War before becoming a test Spencer and Taraji pilot and one of the nation’s P. But at the Glenn’s. In 1998, at age 77, same time, what a celebration of life.” those qualities helped earn him a seat on the shuttle Discovery, where he again made history, this time as the oldest person ever to fly into space. Throughout all of his out-of-this-world adventures there was one woman keeping his feet firmly on the ground: Annie, whom he’d met “in the playpen,” as he liked to say of their shared Ohio childhood. Yet few outside of their close family (including son John, now 71, and daughter Carolyn, now 69) and friends knew that Annie, his wife of 73 years, had battled a stuttering problem so severe she could hardly communicate. (She overcame it through intensive speech therapy in 1973.) “He supported her all the way,” says Taylor. “They were just very much together.” In an age where the word “hero” has become “a little cheapened,” says Taylor, Glenn will ultimately be remembered as exactly that. “He’s one of the great American heroes,” he says,“for his courage, his public service and his devotion to his wife and family.”

Many Bachelor-franchise engagements don’t survive the transition from fantasy dates to real life. But former Bachelorette JoJo Fletcher and her fiancé, Jordan Rodgers, didn’t waste any time moving forward. “As soon as the finale aired, we packed up my stuff, and I moved a week later,” says Rodgers, who has now been living with his fiancée in her hometown of Dallas for the past three months, happy to tune out the gossip and share some much needed one-on-onetime awayfrom thecameras. “It was the best thing that could have happened for our relationship,” says Fletcher—particularly after their tumultuous season, during which the pair dealt with rumors that Rodgers wasn’t there for the proverbial “right reasons.” That’s not to say that everything went smoothly. “We had no furniture for the first three months,” says Fletcher with a laugh. “We had this idea that we’d have movie nights snuggled up on the couch. But for a while, we just sat on the floor!” Now, having finally furnished their cozy bun-

galow with a “cozy chic” look, Fletcher, a real estate developer, 26, and Rodgers, a college-football analyst, 28, are showing off their home—and opening up about their next steps. “I can’t wait to get married,” Fletcher says. “This year has been a roller coaster. I didn’t expect to be here. And I’m so happy.” JoJo, a year ago you had just been dumped by Ben Higgins on The Bachelor. How does it feel to be in this place with Jordan now? that it would work out the way it was supposed to. Seeing where I’ve come is nice! Have things calmed down since the show aired? JOJO It’s slowing down. But we still have fans

coming up to our door. That’s super-creepy and took a little getting used to. In the beginning, we didn’t go out because it was so overwhelming. JORDAN But still, if we don’t post a photo together for three days, people think we’re broken up. JOJO It is a little stressful. We’re trying to find the

balance of living our lives in the present but also avoiding the rumors. It’s annoying to read that we’re faking our relationship or breaking up. Jordan is much better at not getting fazed. I’ve learned to handle things much better with him.

Given the negative attention, do you feel you have to show the public that you’re a solid couple? JORDAN I don’t think we have anything to prove.

It’s completely ridiculous. I didn’t allow rumors to affect our relationship while the show was airing, and I don’t now. JOJO It wasn’t a conventional way to meet, so it’s hard for people who have never done it to understand. We’re trying not to focus on [the negative] and just live our lives. What have you learned from living together? JORDAN We’ve learned all the great things, like

the weird quirks and noises and routines. JOJO Jordan sleep-talks! It’s funny. He slepttalked in a perfect Irish accent, and I’m so mad at myself that I didn’t get my phone out to record it. JORDAN JoJo gets really hot. She’s not a cuddler before bed. And allegedly I’m the worst and most loud eater of cereal. She’s always like, “You clink your bowl too loudly!” I guess that’s annoying. Are you excited for your first Christmas together? JOJO Jordan convinced me to get a real Christmas

tree, which was the best decision ever. We’re starting to build traditions that we’ll have for years to come. Just decorating our house for Christmas, we feel this closeness. Stuff like that is so much better than flying in a private jet! Any fights? JORDAN We are human. But I’ve never had any

doubts that we would make it work.

The name-calling and death threats that started

coming on Dec. 5—the day he announced in The New York Times that he would not cast his Electoral College vote for Donald Trump—didn’t surprise Christopher Suprun. “This is politics,” says the Texas paramedic and Republican. “I have a pretty thick skin.” At least, he notes, the supportive comments were running roughly equal to the denunciations. Still, after a week in the spotlight he wondered if his wife was having second thoughts about his decision to go public. “I asked Dianne, ‘Are you still good?’ She said, ‘Yeah.’ I know she is stressed, but she’s a rock,” says Suprun, 42,a dad of five. “If she wasn’t, I wouldn’t be able to do this.” Suprun’s defiance as a first-time elector opened one more front in a storm of controversy surrounding Trump and the legitimacy of his election. Four days after Suprun’s op-ed in the Times,

‘IT’S VERY TELLING THAT TRUMP DEFENDS RUSSIA OVER HIS OWN INTELLIGENCE AGENCIES’

74

December 26, 2016 PEOPLE

President Obama has ordered a probe, Senate leaders promise hearings, and 10 Electoral College members demanded their own intelligence briefing before their vote. Former CIA analyst Mark Lowenthal breaks down the Russian hacking of Democratic Party and Clinton campaign officials— plus Trump’s disdain for U.S. intelligence: Only fairly exquisite intelligence could prove the Russians hacked us to favor Trump. They are not going to leave that kind of trail. We do know the Russians hacked the DNC, because they clearly gave that to WikiLeaks, and Julian Assange said he wanted to defeat Clinton. So for Trump to say it’s impossible to know who did the hacking is not correct. You can trace things back and find the hacker. But Putin already won this one, with all the publicity. I think his first goal was to remind people, “I still matter.” Could investigation findings keep Trump from office? I think he’ll take the oath on Jan. 20, but all this clearly raises doubts about how he won. I think that’s why he’s reacting as strongly as he is; he’s offended by the inference he needed outside help to win. Trump has refused daily intelligence briefings and is dismissive of their value. Is there precedent for this? No. Not every President has gotten briefed every day, but we’ve never had a President flatly refuse. They will adjust the briefings to fit Trump’s style, but the idea of his saying he only needs to be briefed once a week and the Vice President can be briefed daily—that’s a huge mistake. When there is a crisis and people are in the Situation Room, they are going to turn to the President and say, “Sir, what do you want us to do?” Without that depth of knowledge [from the daily brief], he risks making bad decisions that are not as well-informed as they could be. Is his attitude toward U.S. intelligence a problem? The White House and CIA at war with one another is not good for national security.

A TEEN’S TRAGIC DEATH

BULLIED INTO SUICIDE? After months of online torment, 18-year-old Brandy Vela fatally shoots herself in front of her horrified family. Could she have been saved? By CAITLIN KEATING

GONE TOO SOON Friends and family members have covered the wall of Brandy’s bedroom with notes of love and remembrance. Says Jackie: “We have to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”

Brandy Vela sent the text message to her family at 12:52 p.m. on Nov 29: “Guys, I love you so much, please remember that, and I’m sorry for everything.” Within minutes the family converged at the Velas’ Texas City, Texas, home to find 18-year-old Brandy leaning against her bedroom wall with a gun to her chest. “I started yelling, ‘Brandy, stop, talk to me!’ ” recalls her sister Jackie. Ignoring her family’s pleas to put the gun down, Brandy asked her father, Raul, to look away: “Dad, turn around. I don’t want you to see this.” “I will never turn my back on you,” he responded. But Brandy was desperate. “I can’t do this anymore,” she said. “I’m tired. I’ve come too far not to do it.” Sadly, nothing—and no one— could change her mind. Brandy pulled the trigger, sending a bullet into her upper chest. In sheer horror, Raul, 45, held a towel to his daughter’s chest to try to stop the bleeding until an ambulance arrived, but it was too late. The high school senior was pronounced dead upon arrival at a nearby hospital. Police say she died from a “self-inflicted gunshot wound.” Now, however, they have opened a criminal investigation into Brandy’s death, trying to determine if she was a “victim of cyberbullying.” “Once we develop more facts, we will have a better understanding of any potential criminal charges,” says Capt. Joe Stanton of the Texas City police department. But Brandy’s family has no doubt. “It didn’t stop,” says Jackie, 22. “What they did wasn’t just bullying, it was stalking.”

According to Brandy’s family, her tormentors set

Brandy’s cell phone number, which led to endless text messages and phone calls that would keep Brandy up throughout the night, says Jackie. “They would call her a slut,” she says. “We always thought she brushed it off and didn’t care, but now we know how bad it really was.” Somehow the bubbly and cheerful girl who loved animals and dreamed of becoming a veterinarian hid the depth of her anguish from everyone— including Jackie, younger sister Michelle, 16, and brother Victor, 19. “She was so determined and was a real family person,” says Jackie. When she wasn’t interning at a local animal hospital, she was a server at a nearby seafood restaurant. “She was the heart of this place,” says her cousin Juan Trevino, 36, who manages the restaurant. “She’d come in and bake everyone cookies. She was loved by so many.” She also confided in him regularly. “I knew the bullying was taking a toll on her, but she was still so positive,” says Trevino. “It makes no sense.” Just two days before her suicide, Brandy attended a party where she danced and “was smiling,” says her coworker and friend Marnie Weinstein, 33. “But she looked like she was going to cry through it.” Still, Weinstein says, “no one could foresee anything like this happening.”

Brandy’s bedroom walls are covered in Post-it notes from friends and loved ones, with messages such as “You will never be forgotten” and “You will always own a piece of my heart.” And her family has committed themselves to making sure no one else’s child has to go through what Brandy did, joining efforts to pass Texas legislation that gives police and schools new tools to combat cyberbullying. The bill, called “David’s Law,” is named in honor of 16-year-old David Molak, who killed himself in January after aggressive online threats and bullying. “There was nothing we could say or do for Brandy,” says Jackie. “And we’ll live with that forever.”

wenty-one years ago Travis Roy skated onto the ice for the first time as a star freshman recruit for Boston University’s ice hockey team. “It was a special day,” remembers Roy, who was already planning a pro career after college. “It was my childhood dream to play for the Boston Bruins.” Eleven seconds later that dream became a nightmare, as Roy lay facedown on the ice after crashing headfirst into the rink’s sideboards during a play. Instantly paralyzed from the neck down, Roy would never walk—let alone skate—again. “Selfishly, there was a lot of sadness and loss,” says Roy, now 41.

A YEAR AFTER HIS FATHER’S DEATH, BARTON BROOKS TAKES HIS MOM ON A EUROPEAN ADVENTURE—AND SHOWS HER HOW TO LIVE AGAIN By ROSE MINUTAGLIO When Carla Brooks’s husband of 50 years, Karl Brooks, died in November, 2015, in many ways she felt her own life had ended too. “He was my love, my purpose in life. I felt like I didn’t have anything to do,” says Carla, 77, who’d been Karl’s primary caregiver in their St. George, Utah, home for nearly 20 years, ever since he’d suffered a debilitating stroke in 1997. “We were really worried about Mom,” says her son Barton Brooks. “Her focus was always on Dad. She had no plans or dreams.” Which is why Barton, 45, and his fiancé, Gregg Goodbrod, 43, set out to help Carla rediscover her dreams— and then make them all come true. “At 22, Mom traveled the world,” says Barton, a real estate agent who lives with Gregg, an actor, in Woodstock,

“II’m sure “I’m “I’ sure he he’s ’s wit with h us, u loo lookin looking king g down d down, own, smiling,” says Carla (with Karl at their June 4, 1965, wedding).

N.Y. “We wanted to re-spark that youthful vigor, so we came up with a plan to take her on a grand adventure through Europe.” On Sept. 26 Barton and Gregg took the money they’d been saving to buy a new car and surprised Carla with a flight to Paris, their first stop on a months-long jour-

ney of 20 life-affirming adventures— one for each year she cared for Karl. “We wanted her to find herself, to really live again,” says Barton. Adds Gregg, whose own mom, Gwendolyn, died from a brain aneurysm in 1997: “We’re making new memories. New places bring us all closer together.” In the past two months the intrepid trio have baked croissants in Paris, toured castles in Wales and trekked to the summit of Switzerland’s Jungfrau mountain. Next up: Germany, Austria and Italy. “I think about Karl or get teary every day,” says Carla. “But I feel whole again for the first time in a long time. I can’t wait for the next surprise! This trip is changing my life.” Which is all her son had hoped for. “She’s come alive again,” says Barton. “We may never go home!”

...IS OUT OF THIS WORLD Hot husband, doting dad, shooting star. Hollywood’s nicest guy blasts off in a new movie with Jennifer Lawrence Interview by Jess Cagle

FELLOW PASSENGERS Pratt (with Lawrence) says the outer-space thriller is “something I’ve never seen before.”

C

hris Pratt’s life story was made for the movies. Growing up in rural Washington, he yearned to be an actor but thought it was an impossible dream. “I didn’t know anybody,” he says. “I didn’t have any money to get myself to L.A. I was very much an outsider. There was no way in.” But at 20, Pratt was waiting tables at a

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. on Maui when he caught the eye of actress Rae Dawn Chong, and the Soul Man star auditioned him for a movie she was directing. “She said, ‘You’re good. We’re going to use you.’ I really felt in that moment that my life had changed forever,” Pratt says. He became a working actor, and—14 years after his first film—a bona fide A-lister after starring in Guardians of the Galaxy. Pratt, 37, sat down with People’s editorial director, Jess Cagle, for a SiriusXM radio interview about fame, his space thriller Passengers

and life with wife Anna Faris and their 4-year-old son Jack. Your new movie Passengers, with Jennifer Lawrence, is a big, expensive sci-fi movie, and it’s a rarity because it’s not based on anything.

That’s exactly right. There’s something so fresh about it. I remember reading the script, and I was absolutely blown away. It was truly the greatest script I’ve ever read. It’s original. It poses these questions that, for me, have never existed in storytelling. What happens to you and [Lawrence] when you’re on this spaceship?

We play two of 5,000 passengers on the Starship Avalon, which is like a luxury cruise line traveling the cosmos toward a new colony planet . . . we’re essentially in a state of suspended animation because we’re traveling for 120 years to this new world. Through this mysterious malfunction in the sleeping pods, two of us wake up 90 years too soon. Then the ship starts shutting down. And we’re also falling in love! Did you know Jennifer Lawrence before you started the movie?

No, I’d never met her before. I mean, I knew of her, of course, from her

opinion? There’s no equal in Hollywood. He’s the best I’ve worked for. I owe so much to him. This one is just heightened. It’s bigger and better than the first movie in every way, and that’s saying a lot, because I think the first movie is really good. We released the trailer recently, and it got 81 million views in the first day. It’s the biggest trailer in the history of Marvel. Not that it’s a competition, but if it was, we would win! It’s also a really funny movie— like it really makes you laugh.

I think that’s been part of the evolution of comic book movies. The success of Guardians of the Galaxy resonated through all comic book and superhero movies. But nothing bothers me more than, when something’s not funny, thinking that it is. I’m probably a bit of a comedy snob. That’s what happens when you work on Parks and Rec for seven years. I have a hard time fake laughing. This movie will get huge laughs.

There’s a love scene. She’s spoken about how awkward it was for her. She said she got really drunk before it.

Essentially it’s your job to minimize the discomfort by making sure it’s a closed set and assuring the person you’re with that they’re okay. And you know—for all the sense of anxiety that comes with leading up to a scene like this—you get into it and you realize there’s nothing sexy about it at all. It’s just really awkward! But it’s part of the gig, so you just do what you can to try and ease any discomfort the other person feels.

When did you decide you wanted to be an actor? Growing up in Washington, you had no exposure to show business.

When you’re away shooting, you’re gone months at a time. How do you stay in touch with Anna and your little son Jack? Is there a lot of Skyping?

Taking Chances Growing up in a largely black and Jewish community made her bolder, in spite of her caution as an immigrant, she says. When she was falsely accused of plagiarizing an English assignment in

school, she didn’t back down— she wrote an essay for Seventeen about the experience. That landed her a guest editorship at the magazine, her first job in media. “When I push myself to take action, sometimes something magical happens,” she says.

Sharing Her Voice After working as a reporter for the pioneering Latina producer Aida Barrera in Austin, Texas, then at TV stations in Boston and New Jersey, Galán started her own production company in the ’90s. She used her multicultural background to bring more Latino stories into the mainstream—and channeled the confidence of others until she could find her own. “Eventually you create your own voice that is empowered,” she says. Now she shares that advice

with other women: “I tell them, ‘If you feel you can’t stand up to someone, make believe you’re me, because you know I would do it.’ ”

Making a Mark After years on her own, Galán was named Telemundo’s first female president of entertainment in 1998. When NBC bought the network three years later, she struck back out on her own, selling shows to both NBC and FOX and appearing on the first season of Celebrity Apprentice. Galán says she used all those experiences in her book Self Made: Becoming Empowered, Self-Reliant & Rich in Every Way, published in May. “Around the corner of my biggest failures is always my greatest success,” Galán says. “So if I don’t hang in there, I don’t get to the next success.”

her rags-to-riches path as Cuban immigrant turned television mogul and selfhelp author may seem meteoric, it actually took decades of hard work and careful strategy. “I’m really slow, like a turtle,” insists Galán, 53, the former entertainment president of Telemundo. “I’m methodical and thorough.” Now the head of Galán Entertainment, she shares her strategy on the Fortune 500 speaking circuit: “You have to acknowledge no one is coming to save you. You can save yourself.”

Coming to America Galán immigrated to the U.S. with her family when she was 5, moving to New Jersey after they were “adopted” by a local Presbyterian family. The entire church community rallied around them, even helping to get Galán’s father, Arsenio, a job painting cars at Ford Motor Company. Her mother, Nelida, sewed clothes for her and her younger brother Arsenio Jr. “It was difficult because we didn’t speak English, and that was weird,” Galán says. “But we never felt unloved or unwanted in this country.”

For years, Felicity Jones has teetered on the brink of stardom. She first packed an emotional punch in the 2011 indie romance Like Crazy opposite the late Anton Yelchin, before delivering an Oscar-nominated performance as Jane Hawking, wife of famed scientist Stephen, in 2014’sThe Theory of Everything. This year Jones is once again on awards short lists, for her heartbreaking turn as a terminally ill mother in A Monster Calls. But for all that acclaim, it is an altogether different sort of role that is about to launch her into the stratosphere— literally. As the star of the massively anticipated Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Jones is helming a group of rebels whose mission is to steal the plans of the deadliest weapon in the galaxy (sound familiar? It’s because it’s described in the S opening crawl off the original 1977 7 Star Wars). but I enjoyed it,” she says. She also loved movies. “My brother and I were obsessed with films growing up.” One in particular stood out:Star Wars. “I was 7 or 8. My cousins and I were watching it on VHS. I remember sitting very close to the TV, and as that really iconic description rolls up with the music playing, it was one of those moments where you felt something very special was happening.” When Jones enrolled at Oxford, “I never quite thought I’d go into acting. At one point I thought I was going to do law. I think it was wishful thinking on my part.” After graduating with an English-literature degree, she decided to try acting after all, going from small role to small role until Like Crazy. The warm response to that film “opened a whole new world,” Jones says. Despite a blockbuster under her belt and possibly another awards season on tap, “nothing has changed” in her life, says Jones, who declines to discuss her romantic status. “Luckily my private life is still pretty private, and I hope to maintain that.” Now, after a whirlwind year, she’s looking forward to some well-earned time off. “I’m going to be with my family and taking it easy. I love being in the kitchen, cooking for friends and family. I throw a lot of ingredients together and pray to the gods.” Her career, at least, requires no such divine intervention. “It’s been an absolute dream,” she says with a smile. “And I’ve been enjoying every single minute.”

After months of auditioning for what Luna calls the most “relatable” Star Wars movie yet, the Mexican actor scored the role of Captain Cassian Andor, an accomplished Rebel Alliance intelligence officer. His ability to stay calm under pressure lands him the mission of keeping an eye on the hotheaded Jyn Erso. As an actor who got his start on telenovelas before catching his big break in 2002’s Y Tu Mama Tambien, Luna is still trying to wrap his mind around starring in one of the most famous film franchises in the world. “I think this is the most grounded Star Wars film, because it’s really about the people,” he says. “It reflects on the world we live in today— one rich with diversity and culture and the conflict that happens around that. It’s very pertinent to today and very exciting to see in a film with such reach.” His biggest struggle? Keeping all the secrets. “You have to keep it quiet, so it becomes much more complicated, and it’s all happening in your head,” he says. “It was quite a journey. It still is!”

And with a permit allowing the practice to treat wild animals native to California, Antin has operated on coyotes, opossums and raccoons and once faced a badger (“That was unreal; I didn’t even know they were in Southern California,” he says). At home in Agora Hills, Calif., Antin and his fiancée, travel journalist Nathalie Basha, keep a menagerie: Chihuahua/toy fox terrier mix Henry; cats Willy, a domestic shorthair, and Damien, a Russian Blue; a mangrove snake; a monitor lizard; and some fish. But there’s one more animal on his list. “Someday when I’m old and retired and not traveling as much,” he says, “I see myself getting a parrot and spending time at home.”

PREPPING FOR A PET Before bringing an animal home, pet-proof. “Make sure they can’t get into cabinets, food or small toys,” Antin says. “Puppies like to chew on expensive stuff like leather purses, belts and shoes, so lock those up too.”

DO PETS MAKE GOOD PRESENTS? In a word, says Antin, “no.” “If you’re not expecting an animal, you’re not ready for it. You need to prepare to care for it, adjust your lifestyle and schedule and figure out your budget beforehand.” PET SHOPS VS. SHELTERS If your loved ones agree about getting a pet, visit a shelter first. “There are so many animals that need homes that don’t have them. There are even a lot of exotics rescues that have the animals you’ll see in pet shops.”

YOURSELF Taking a moment is so good for you. I like to sit in the sauna or even just to take a nice bath at home. When I make myself one, I do the whole setup with candles and Mr. Bubble! But it’s also nice to get a massage at a spa or have someone come to your house to give you one, which is really luxurious.

O FOR | GO BOLD EYE

SHADOW I’ve always been someone who loves makeup, and one of my favorite looks is a smoky eye. Of the seven palettes that Smashbox has launched I probably use this Smoky one [above] the most. It’s perfect for getting that look, and I like that there’s a bit of shimmer in it too.

The Easiest Waves Ever! JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS, CELEBRITY HAIRSTYLIST SARAH POTEMPA EXPLAINS HOW TO CREATE A PRETTY PARTY STYLE WITH ONE TOOL

114

START WITH A PERFECT PART I’ve known Lea Michele for over 10 years, and a relaxed wave is one of her signature looks. When we don’t want the style to look beachy, I part her hair in a nice, clean line first. Having that creates a more polished look. CURL PIECES AWAY FROM YOUR FACE Even though Emily

beauty HACK If you don’t have a hair cream to create pieciness and tame flyaways, Potempa suggests using a pea-size amount of hand lotion to achieve the same separation and smoothness.

Blunt’s hair has a natural wave, I still go through it with a Beachwaver after I air-dry it to create a little bend going away from her face, just for a slight enhancement. If I don’t, her hair might look a little flat against her cheekbones. One rotation of the iron is all you need if you have a natural wave like hers. LEAVE THE ENDS OUT OF THE IRON Kendall Jenner likes her hair with a little less of a curl, so at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in November, I avoided curling the ends— meaning the last two inches of each piece. It definitely goes against traditional curling technique, but doing

so gives your look that relaxed vibe. ADD LOTS OF VOLUME To give my clien nts likee Bryce Dallas H Howard even more fulln ness, after curling th he hair, I spray it w with a texturizer, then n I takee sections and liftt them up to separate them m so the look has a light g t airiness to it. CURL YOUR FRINGE TOO When you have slightly sg y longer bangs, likee Mandy Moore, yo ou can n use the Beachwavver to give them bend. Ju ust clamp the ends of your y r hair and very slowlyy tap p one of the buttons on o the iron to rotate th he barrel. Your hairstylee should look effortlesss,, but finished!

FIND A TOOL THAT WORKS FOR YOU I’ve become known for relaxed waves because a lot of my clients wanted that perfect combination of a little bit of glamour with a little bit of a lived-in look. Many of them tried to do the style themselves but found it difficult to hold the iron the way they needed to. So almost five years ago I launched the Beachwaver. It’s an automatic rotating curling iron that makes adding waves so easy. It feels good to have created a tool that allows my clients like Kaley Cuoco and Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley to do their hair on their own.

1. Preheat oven to 300°. Heat oil in a 12-inch cast-iron skillet over mediumhigh heat. Stir together coriander, fennel and 1 teaspoon salt in a small bowl. Transfer skillet to oven, and bake carrots until caramelized and tender when pierced with a fork, about 50 minutes. 3. About 10 minutes before carrots are finished roasting, melt butter in a medium skillet over medium heat. Cook until slightly brown, about 3 minutes. Add pine nuts, scallions, crushed red pepper and thyme. Cook, stirring often, until nuts are toasted and butter is brown and smells nutty, about 3 minutes. Add apples, lemon juice and remaining 1⁄ 2 teaspoon salt; cook, stirring often, until most of the liquid is absorbed, about 1 minute. 4. Place carrots on a serving platter. Top with apple mixture and any remaining pan liquid. Serves: 5 Active time: 20 minutes Total time: 1 hour

food HACK When browning butter, use a skillet with a light-colored bottom so you can monitor the shade—which will go from light yellow to tan to, eventually, a toasty brown.

1. Beat butter with a heavyduty electric-stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment on medium-low speed until smooth. Add granulated sugar, vanilla bean paste and salt; beat until all ingredients are distributed evenly, about 2 to 3 minutes, stopping to scrape down sides of bowl. 2. But the season 8 Bachelorette, now settled in Charlotte, N.C., admits that having her two youngest children, Jennings, 17 months, and Gibson, 3 months, so close in age is “the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I feel like I’m in the twilight zone most of the time.” Luckily she has husband Tyler Johnson, 30, an auto consultant, and 11-year-old daughter Ricki (from her relationship with racecar driver Ricky Hendrick, who died in 2004) to help out. “Ricki likes to push the stroller,” says Johnson, 30, who has “girls’ nights” with her daughter once a month.

Emma Stone

THE ACTRESS, 28, STARS IN THE NEW MOVIE MUSICAL LA LA LAND

Last irrational fear I don’t love needles. I had to get my blood drawn a couple of weeks ago. I cover my face and sing. The anticipation is the worst part, but then afterward I feel like a superhero all day.

Last time I was late I am sometimes, but I don’t like to be late. I don’t remember a time more than 15 minutes. I guess it’s important to me to be on time. Well, I try to be, but I’m not always great at it.

Last superstition I accidentally said “Macbeth” in rehearsals for SNL. If it was a theater, I would go outside and spin around, but they assured me it was a studio. That’s a theater superstition. You say “the Scottish play” instead of “Macbeth” or it can curse your production. It’s pretty major.

Last time I cried Oh God, frequently. But that’s just part of my life; I accept it. Commercials, acts of kindness, all of that. I’m trying to work on it.

Last thing I took from a set

I did Battle of the Sexes, and they had a key chain on my fake car keys that said, “Virginia Slims. You’ve come a long way, baby.” So now I keep that on my actual car keys, which I love. I always ask. I’m punctual and I don’t like to steal; it is what it is. Reported by Julie Jordan
