Or if you want to learn the Melrose Method. • It always irked me that with most CRMs when I am mobile, I can’t see emails that I have exchanged with someone, with Prosperworks I can. This makes working remotely a breeze.

• In most CRMs I can’t associate an email to a completely different project, opportunity or company. (I loved that in Daylite’s email plugin) With Prosperworks I can. If you are wondering why I keep mentioning Daylite. I was the world leading imple mentor of it for 10 years before moving into the cloud, but it still holds a special place in my heart. It launched my career.

They just received 24 Million in funding to invest in the AI so it can get better at tracking what your company does to close a deal. After it learns that, it will make suggestions on deals and tell you what needs to be done to close them.

• On another Daylite note, I always really liked the light project management that it had. Prosperworks has that, as well as automated actions. • It’s also important that Prosperworks is quick to implement. Being a business productivity coach, I want my clients to be up and running quickly. It should take a few hours, not a few months! • It’s important to me that I can use the Melrose Method in my systems, with Prospworks I can. *The Melrose Method is my proprietary method of project task management that takes humans into account within a business.

• I hated that Podio was so horrible with email. Prosperworks lives in your Gmail and you can do almost everything from there. Outfreakin-standing! Incidentally one of the Podio Partners who created PodioTools is trialing Prosperworks as I type this.

Prosperworks has almost zero data entry, it hunts through signatures and other resources that Google has at it’s disposal and builds a rich profile of each person! Who doesn’t LOVE that?

I am not going to go on and on about it (seriously I could write a book at this point). I encourage you to check it out for yourself if you use Gsuite or are thinking about it.

The Smart Case fits either iPhone 7, iPhone 6 Plus or 6s Plus, iPhone 6 or 6s as well as fitting iPhone 5/5s/SE. The case includes dual layers of cushion protection against drops poly-carbonate outside and soft silicone inside. The case includes a magnet in the back that will adhere not just to the cradle, but any metallic surface as well. Unity shows a user adhering his phone to a car with the magnetic feature. I can see the value in viewing repair instructions on the phone directly while working on it. Having the phone adhere to anything metallic is a nice feature. The cradle consists of a metal sphere mounted on top of a cone with a suction cup base. The Smart Case easily connects to the cradle, just touch them together and lock. Now that the your phone is connected to the cradle, it can be attached to any surface the suction cup will allow. As well because your phone connects magnetically to the metal sphere atop the cradle, it can easily be turned and rotated 360 degrees. Your phone is in reach, and at your desired angle. MyMe has given consumers a choice to purchase the system complete or separately, this would be handy when buying another phone. Or as often happens to business people when you have one phone for business and one phone for personal use, but only need one cradle at a time. Unity cases and cradles come in Black, White, Aquagreen and Red.

Alright, I understand I am late to the party of Evernote, but showing up late is better than not attending the party. How many times, as a mobile professional, have you wished that you could accurately track mileage? MileBug provides a multi-platform mobile mileage tracking solution to track mileage for for business reimbursement and/or tax purposes. MileBug is an app runs on iOS devices, WindowsPhone 8 and Android smartphones. Its distinguishing features are its intuitive interface and ease of use. MileBug uses the smartphone GPS to track each mile traveled. The user’s entire route is graphed, mileage is electronically tracked mileage and a detailed trip log is generated with information needed to document mileage for reimbursement or when preparing taxes. The user receives an emailed HTML or Excel friendly report which can be stored and backed up for future reference or to pull for tax return preparation. Mileage is calculated

at $0.54 per mile (the current standard mileage rate for travel and transportation expenses). Information documented includes the start and end date of the trip, name of business, place of origin, destination, purpose of the trip, vehicle used, odometer start, odometer end, total miles traveled, expenses if any. Travel is then tracked by date and sorted by purpose, or however the user wishes to sort the report data. MileBug has advantages not only for professional use but for personal use to track deductible travel. It is clearly easier and far more accurate than mapping out a trip on a routing mapsite, hoping the mileage is accurate and calculating the cost. MileBug makes manual mileage tracking a thing of the past and makes electronic tracking simple.

Battery Diagnostics On-the-fly Isidor Buchmann www.cadex.com. answers@cadex.com

Removing the “black-box” stigma by making well as with drones and electric drivetrains that depend on precise range predictions. performance transparent Battery users imagine a battery pack being an energy storage device that resembles a fuel tank dispensing liquid fuel. For simplicity reasons, a battery can indeed be perceived as a vessel storing electrical energy; however, measuring energy flowing into an electrochemical device and then drawing it out again is far more complex than handling liquid fuel. While a hydraulic fuel gauge measures liquids moving in and out of a tank of known size, a battery fuel gauge reads units of current. Battery size is specified in ampere hours (Ah), and what makes estimating battery state-of-charge (SoC) and state-of-health (SoH) so challenging is an unsteady state; a battery loses capacity with each charge and leaks energy in the form of self-discharge. The specified capacity of a new battery is (should be) 100%; replacement is typically at 80%. A standard fuel gauge only shows SoC; capacity is not revealed. A full charge lights up the entire SoC scale, even if the capacity has faded to 50% and delivers only half the runtime.

Figure 1: Fuel gauge. The battery fuel gauge always shows “full” after charge even if the capacity has dropped in half.

To maintain fuel gauge accuracy, a smart battery should periodically be calibrated by discharging it until the “Low Battery” symbol appears on the device. This can be done in the device. A full cycle sets the respective flags as shows in Figure 3. A linear line forms between these two anchor points to allow reasonably accurate SoC estimations for a time. How often should a battery be calibrated? This depends on the application. A battery in continued use should be calibrated every 3 months or after 40 partial cycles. If the device applies a periodic full deep discharge, then calibration should not be needed. A user’s manual for an Apple iPad reads: “For proper reporting of SoC, be sure to go through at least one full charge/ discharge cycle per month.” What happens if the battery is not calibrated regularly? Can such a battery be used with confidence? The battery should function normally and there are no safety concerns, but the digital SoC readout becomes unreliable. When designing a BMS, engineers often make the mistake of assuming that a battery will always stay young. As with us folks, batteries age and this is manifested in capacity loss. The SoC gauge will always show a glowing 100% after each charge. Capacity is conveniently hidden from the user. Several methods to estimate battery SoH exist and are in development. This article describes five technologies. They are: 1. Coulomb counting as part of an integral battery system in mobile phones and laptops

It was quite life changing, myself and my family were impacted by the cheer, thankfulness and positive attitude of the people. We had several beautiful moments of sharing our stories and giving some of the gifts that we took from Canada. It was well received and it was touching us in more ways than one. What we complain about was so trivial compared to what the locals had to go through. Most live on one meal a day, with a glass of warm water and salt for the other meals. The average space for a couple with 4 kids is about 6 by 10 feet with living, sleeping, dining and bathroom all within that space, additionally there with no running water or electricity. LampFree® – Leading the projector revolution

LampFree projectors keep getting better and better. Having a LampFree projector means no more lamps to replace, no more filters to replace, less down time, lower maintenance costs and now they are smaller, lighter, and brighter than ever. The dramatic improvement in color purity achieved by Casio’s new light source has significantly improved color reproduction and the projected images look brighter due to the visual effects of the high-purity colors. While lamps on traditional lamp projectors lose brightness between 1,000 and 3,000 hours, Casio’s portfolio of LampFree projectors use a unique Laser & LED light source technology to produce images of impressive brightness with a lifespan of up to 20,000 hours. That means your LampFree projector could last over 15 years, based on an average six hours of use a day during a 180-day school year, without ever having to change a lamp.

Cover Story

Many homeowners and businesses are becoming increasingly concerned about the environment, their rising electricity bills, and the reliability of an aging electrical grid. Until recently, there have been relatively few options available to address these concerns. Solar panels have offered a limited solution, but the high cost, low efficiency and troublesome installation requirements have left many consumers confused about how to best move forward.

“Because of the low cost and high output of NewGen®, many more consumers will be able to “go green” and participate in the Solar Revolution,” says Craig Wycoff, CFO of Jetstream. He continues, “We were not particularly interested in competing with PV panels. Although solar is a multi-billion dollar industry, all of the solar generating capability installed to date still produces only about 1% of the electricity in the annual global market of over $2 trillion. We realized that to truly penetrate the electric market, we needed to produce electricity at An innovative new energy solution has been developed by Jetstream Energy a cost competitive with fossil fuels and even nuclear generation.” Jetstream Technologies, Inc. of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Coulomb counting is also used to estimate the capacity of e-bikes. Although carefully monitored, the SoH readings are not revealed to the user. For reasons of anonymity, only authorized personnel have access by a security code. Device manufacturers fear that showing a capacity of less than 100% would raise too many consumer complaints, especially during the warranty period. Such secrecy typically only applies to consumer products; industrial applications differ. SoC of a portable device is usually shown in percentage or in runtime minutes; the EV does this with driving range in kilometers or miles. A true assessment in Ah, as is possible with a tank of gasoline in a vehicle is not possible with the battery. The amount of Ah a battery can capture as it ages goes into hiding. Consumer concerns aside, knowing battery capacity has the benefit of connecting Ah with runtime and predicting battery replacement on capacity, the leading battery health indicator.

2. Reading the FCC Register in an SMBus Battery

Chargers are advancing and will soon offer battery SoH readouts. As industries switch to the SMBus battery, FCC (full charge capacity) stored in the battery can interpret SoH by the coulomb count taken while the battery is in service. This allows checking SoH by simply inserting the battery into a charger. The SMBus battery has a further advantage of providing a digital serial number that will enable storing historic battery performance information in a database. If the FCC reading in such a charger is above the user-set Pass/Fail threshold, then the battery will pass; if below, calibration is needed. Calibration applies a full charge and discharge cycle to reset the flags and ascertain the true capacity of the “chemical battery.” If the capacity is above target, then the battery passes and the FCC reading is corrected; results below the line calls for a battery replacement. Digital FCC peripherals are normally lower than the actual battery capacity and this prevents a false positive result. Figure 3 demonstrates the concept in graphics. Cadex is developing a charger line that encompasses this feature under the Universal Diagnostic Charger (UDC) series.

a Li-ion battery, the RAC charger determines the residual SoC with a proprietary algorithm and then measures the inflowing coulombs to fill the battery. Combining the coulomb count with residual charge gives the full capacity. An analogy is topping a partially filled bottle by calculating the added amount. The bottle size represents 100%; what it can hold reflects the capacity. RAC requires a onetime calibration for each battery model. Cycling a good battery provides the reference reading that can be stored in the charger. The RAC charger has the ability to estimate the capacity of a regular (dumb) battery. Tests are showing better accuracies with RAC than what is possible with the FCC capture of an SMBus battery. RAC validates battery performance and does quality control with no extra logistics. The green “ready” light at the end of service assures that the battery is fully charged and meets the required capacity threshold. A faded battery is identified and shown the backdoor.

4. Rapid-test

The Rapid-test takes a snapshot of a chemical battery in seconds or minutes. Electrochemical Dynamic Response uses pulse technology; the more complex Multi-model Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (Spectro™) scans the battery with multiple frequencies. Rapid-tests have the advantage of testing a broad range of batteries without smarts on the fly, but this requires complex software and hardware that is supported by battery-specific parameters and matrices. It is important to note that the capacity of a battery cannot be measured similar to voltage, current and temperature. SoH can be estimated to various degrees of accuracy based on its symptoms; however, a reliable measurement is not possible if the symptoms are vague or not present. Many makers of battery test devices promise capacity estimation by measuring the internal battery resistance. This is misleading and advertising features that are outside the equipment’s capabilities confuses the industry into believing that complex tests can be done with basic methods. Resistance-based instruments can indeed identify a dying or dead battery — so does the user. Battery testers are often overstated similar to promoting a shampoo that promises to grow lush hair on a man’s bald head.

5. Full Cycle

This method applies a full charge/discharge cycle to read the capacity of the chemical battery. The time discharging a battery with a regulated discharge current determines the capacity. Although accurate and also serving as calibration of a smart battery, a full cycle is time consuming and is not always practical, especially when checking mobile phone batteries.

Philosophy and Conclusion

Figure 3. Battery SoH evaluation on the fly by reading FCC. Pass/Fail is set to 80%. Not meeting the threshold does not constitute a failed battery but prompts to calibration. FCC references are normally lower than the actual battery capacity. This prevents a false positive result.

The UDC chargers in development will also feature a new Read-and-charge (RAC) diagnostic to estimate battery capacity more accurately. Inserting

Many device manufacturers do not provide sufficient guidelines on battery maintenance and the user is ill-informed on battery performance and when to replace a fading battery. There is a “hand-washing” when passing a device to the workforce, saying, “You are on you own — good luck with the battery.” Developing a better battery is incomplete without improving the diagnostics. Only a well-designed diagnostic system that monitors state-of-function (SoF) will turn the battery into a reliable, safe, cost efficient and environmentally sustainable power source. The modern battery will interact with system and user, state its needs, proclaim what it can deliver and establish definite limitations.

Optimizing Macs for High-End Users Jens Lodholm @doctor_mac

In fields straddling the technical and creative domains, professionals often prefer Macs. Faced by aggressive deadlines, they track their time for productivity. Whether graphic designers, animators, audio engineers, video editors, or something else entirely, their work demands robust technology with a flexible interface. But specialized software worth thousands of dollars pushes the limits of available hardware. Because of outside pressures, the slightest pause in performance can send them scrambling for help. They can seem very demanding, so what’s their IT support to do?

Improve Speed

Video Hardware - In most Macs this cannot be upgraded after buying. While not the only measure of video power, VRAM is a simple one. Get enough for critical software. Settings - Preferences in critical applications can greatly affect performance. Know the software and how to fine-tune it. Networking - Most high-end users rely heavily on servers, but interference can cripple WiFi, so build a solid wired network. Also provide the speed and reliability users need from internet connections.

Purchasing - Begin by consulting users, getting advice from industry experts, and studying the effect of hardware spec- Server Performance - Optimize file servers—especially ifications on critical software. Buy site-licenses to simplify software installs. Smaller deployments can use Carbon Copy Cloner <https:// bombich.com> or Super Duper <http://www.shirt-pocket. com/SuperDuper/SuperDuperDescription.html>, while larger ones can consider Apple’s NetInstall <https://www. apple.com/macos/server/features/> or JAMF’s Casper <https://www.jamf.com/products/jamf-pro/deployment/>. Memory - High-end applications—like the Adobe Creative Suite, Final Cut Pro, and ProTools—drag without adequate RAM. Install what they need.

Jens, the owner of a corporate Macintosh consulting business in Colorado Springs, CO, has carved out a niche corralling Apple products into playing nicely with others in enterprise environments. This has been his livelihood and area of expertise for years, whereas writing is his hobby and passion.

Reliability - Buy solid products with low failure rates and strong support. Seek proven records; a broken tool with a lifetime warranty still kills productivity. Preventative maintenance goes a long way. Periodically run Disk Utility’s First Aid feature, or whenever directory corruption might be a factor. Monitor disk space and other key indicators over the network using Apple Remote Desktop <https://www.apple.com/remotedesktop/>. Familiarize yourself with workstations through regular reports to help you spot developing problems.

Backups - Lost files cost productivity, but daytime backups Manage memory by quitting unused apps. Use a free utility can impact it as well. Test Time Machine on each Mac; if like Memory Clean <https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/mem- it doesn’t hurt performance, leave it at the default hourly ory-clean-monitor-free/id451444120?mt=12> to optimize setting. If it does, install a utility like Time Machine Editor <http://tclementdev.com/timemachineeditor/> to let users RAM usage. set their backup schedule. Storage - Full startup disks run poorly. Provide adequate storage and help users keep space free. This enables the Mac OS and critical applications to use RAM efficiently. Utilize Article continued on page 38 extra disks as secondary scratch disks, and favor fast connections like Thunderbolt. Audio & video production may need RAID or SAN storage, so understand the demands of your industry. Since high-end applications like more space than affordable SSD’s provide, Fusion drives (part SSD, part HDD) are common. Understand how the Mac OS leverages their benefits and limitations. Don’t waste time defragmenting them unless they drop low in free space. CPU - Although there aren’t many upgrade options after purchase, the Activity Monitor app shows a Mac’s running processes, allowing the knowledgeable to streamline CPU usage. Cleaning OS caches may also offer some relief.

Networking for the New Year Michael Muhney viporbit.com @MikeMuhney

Just like me, no matter what your profession or industry, you have competition. But all too often, we fall complacent in our day-to-day interactions, missing opportunities and losing momentum. For many of us, a new year means it’s time to make New Year’s resolutions. For some, those resolutions may involve growing or strengthening your networks. Whether you’re just getting started, starting over, or simply looking to enhance an already stellar network, consider these tips to make the most of your relationship efforts.

Getting Started: Initiate, Interact, Invite

For the up-and-coming professional just starting to build their network, I have this advice: Take the initiative. If you make a meaningful new connection, be diligent about follow-through. Reach out and let them know your interaction was meaningful to you. Don’t hesitate to invite a second encounter—if you can tie in a common interest or preference from your first meeting, even better. You’ll demonstrate your professionalism in that you remembered them mentioning a penchant for French press coffee or single malt Scotch. My only word of caution is to leave plenty of room for authentic reciprocation. Relationships are permission based and pursuing a professional relationship is much like a personal one—it’s possible to come on too strong. Be intentional, not pushy. Don’t make the mistake of waiting for the other person to reach out to you. When you’re starting out, it’s also important to ask for introductions from those with whom you’ve already built a good reputation.

Starting Again: Re-energize Existing Relationships

Whether you’ve made a career move, a physical one, or have just let things lull down, reactivating your networks can seem more daunting than it actually is. Organization makes information usable. Start with a scroll. Reading through names, or looking through profile pictures is a good starting point, but don’t stop there. Sort those contacts into groups (in my app, Vipor Plus, these are called Orbits) based on priority. For example, you can organize by High, Medium, and Low Priority, or numerically, such as Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3. Once you’ve done this, you can begin to reach out. Craft messages and determine how you’ll communicate based on the priority. Balance the importance of the desired results with the level of effort required to achieve them.

SMB

through the cracks of my memory. Whether you use an app like Vipor Plus, spreadsheets, or sticky notes, put your system to work for you! Organize contacts by location, interest, etc. Communicate regularly and with a personal touch. Schedule activities with reminders, so you don’t miss deadlines. Remember, little things don’t mean a lot—they mean everything. As the co-inventor of ACT! Contact Software, the product acknowledged as the catalyst for the CRM industry, I’m actually not a fan of traditional CRM. Why, you may be wondering? I think it’s too limited. Relationships don’t always fall into distinctly professional or personal categories. People may move from one classification to another, or even be in more than one at a time. The relationship statement for my company VIPorbit Software is this: People Matter. We believe in the infinite potential of closer relationships. If you haven’t resolved to be more diligent about building your network this year, I hope after reading this you will. Everybody networks. Make the most of every introduction and interaction with diligence and professionalism!

Sure, the people in your database may reach out to you, but when your success or failure is determined by the quality of your networks, why wait for a call that may never come? Relationships, after all, are investments. Some are penny stocks with little ventured, little gained. Others require significant time and attention to see really big payoffs.

Staying the Course: Decide. Commit. Succeed.

Mike Muhney, co-inventor of ACT!, is now the co-founder of vipOrbit, creators of mobile contact manager apps for iPhone, iPad & Mac. www.viporbit.com

The first and last word in effective relationship management is diligence. Our long-term success lies in our every day routine. Why is this piece of “common sense” advice so uncommon? People promise, but don’t deliver. If you want to stand apart from your competition, the formula is simple. Do what you say you’ll do when you said you’d do it. I start my day with an overview with that very thing in mind. I can’t possibly remember every little email, call, or task, which is why I depend on a tool to keep those little details from slipping

If you are looking to secure your home or control it remotely, there are a number of options and companies to choose from. Swann (swannone.com) is a newer entrant into this market and offers complete options. They offer a wide range of devices and additionally are compatible with a large number of products already on the market that you may have already installed, such as Nest thermostat, Hue lights and Kwikset deadbolt locks. The Swannone Smart hub is the core product that talks to all the devices and can be operated from an IOS or Android app. It connects through WiFi or a number of other mainstream radio protocols. This seems to answer the current dilemma that there is no one protocol that everyone has agreed on which makes it difficult to plan your home automation in the way that works throughout your house. Swannone seems to be addressing this issue. With the smart hub installed you can add as many or as few Devices as you like. One of the unique features of the security system is that it listens to

the sounds in and around your house and it is intelligent enough to identify Breaking glass, car alarms, smoke, fire, gunshots and more and once detected can alert the authorities and you at the same time. Additional if someone attempts to tamper with the security camera that too will send an alert. The cameras save video, data and sound to the cloud or to your own separate hard drive. You can create custom schedules so that the heat and lights turn on before you come home from work or have the coffee maker brew you fresh coffee just before you get up. The possibilities are only determined by your imagination. Installation is simple, no hard wiring is required and starter kits allow for further upgrades at any time in the future as your needs arise. Kits range from $300 - $700.

Time Machine handles small files well, but does poorly on large files (1GB+) with frequent edits. Those who continuously keep big projects open should explore alternatives. Updates - The finicky nature of high-end software makes every update a gamble in stability. Hosting Software Updates on a Mac Server lets you control which Apple updates a Mac can install. Force important updates using Apple Remote Desktop. See my earlier article, “Take Charge of Mac Software Updates”, <http://www.jenslodholm.com/taking-charge-of-macsoftware-updates--part-1.html> for details. Test updates on a small subset of Macs before releasing them. See “Getting Off the Ground with Pilot Groups” <http://www.jenslodholm.com/ getting-off-the-ground-with-pilot-groups.html> for more. If critical third-party software doesn’t have a managed update service, inform users which updates to install, and monitor the status of important ones.

Security - Despite their reputation, Macs need good antivirus protection. But is the cure worse than the disease? Balance malware risks against the burden of defensive software. Look for low-impact utilities proven with your production software. When malware protection harms speed, settle for scheduled scans during off hours. To protect against unauthorized access, require logins with hardened passwords. Enable screen security and disable auto-login. Whether they mean to or not, people can do a lot of damage to data and software where they don’t belong. This article cannot explore every potential bottleneck. Continue to educate yourself from all possible sources—the Apple knowledgebase, Mac news sites, third-party tech sources, and online discussions. That’s how you’ll find what could slow down your high-end Macs, and you’ll become sharper in the process.

Support - Production time comes at a premium, so respond swiftly to work-impacting problems. Understand priorities for yourself and the users. If you work flexible hours to address IT needs, stay available when users are working and be reachable when off-site. This is extra important for sole tech support.
