PROLOGUE

Qingdao is the place where I have studied and lived for five years. This city has been ruled by German and Japanese in the history. After it was liberated, Qingdao became an important textile industrial city in China. And now, it is a famous tourist attraction because of beautiful seaside scenery. All these characteristics endow this city with unique charm.

Urban Regeneration

However, Qingdao, like many other cities, has also reached the stage of transformation and upgrading. In this portfolio, there are three projects and one research. Corresponding to the four problems faced by Qingdao in the process of urbanization: the renovation of historical block, the protection of industrial heritage, the improvement of community life and the redevelopment of recessionary coastal space.

BACKGROUND

URBAN MORPHOLOGY

The site of this project is located in the most prosperous area of Qingdao, close to the coastline and the city government, CBD and other urban critical nodes, which is the last piece of land to be developed in this area. At the same time, there are several historic buildings in the site, such as Zhanshan Primary School built in 1930s and Textile Workers' Sanatorium built in 1950s, which were bearing profound historical significance. Therefore, how to redesign the land to maximize its value and better serve the whole city on the basis of respecting history is the key problem to be solved in this task.

SITE ANALYSIS

1931 In 1930s, when it was Republic of China period, Shen Honglie, the first mayor of Qingdao, set up lots of public schools during his tenure. Zhanshan Primary School was one of those schools built at this time and is the oldest building in the project site.

1952

1994

2000

After the founding of the People's Republic of China, industrial construction began vigorously. It was under this background that the Textile Workers' Sanatorium was built to serve for textile workers.

In 1994, with the support of the policy, the whole Zhanshan Village area began to be demolished and transformed, many residential buildings were gradually built around the site. The historic buildings in the site were also abandoned, waiting to be replanned and utilized.

Entering the new century, more skyscrapers have been built along the coastline, and formed a CBD aera on the opposite side of the site, which has already been a core area of the whole city.

2019 Today, the site of Zhanshan Primary School and Textile Workers Sanatorium has become the last undeveloped area in the eastern urban area. The government is bidding for the renovation plan, which is expected to be completed in a few years.

At the same time, it is close to the City Hall, May Fourth Square, Mix City, Fushan Wan CBD, Coastal Trails and other important city nodes, as well as many residential areas surrounded with convenient transportation, and a large number of people, wnich is of great development potential.

Present Situation But the site is currently underutilized. Except some residential buildings and hotels built later, the rest are historical buildings, such as Zhanshan Primary School in the ROC period , the auditorium, dormitor y, office, villas, warehouses and other auxiliary rooms of Chinese Textile Worker s' Sanatorium. Architectural style and tone are basically unified, mostly Beige mortar metope walls and orange sloping roofs. The North-South facing spatial structure is still very distinctive. Therefore, future planning should be based on respect for the original context.

The site is the last land to be developed in the eastern urban aera, we hope to build this place into a city portal, which can not only serve the surrounding people, but also become a highlight project to enhance the city image, and lay a good foundation f o r t h e f u t u re l o n g - t e r m development.

Local residents

As local residents, most of us come out for relax based on families, so we hope to have a broad public place and various activities to provide place and services for people of d i f f e re n t a g e s . At t h e same time, the supporting community ser vice center is necessary for facilitating people's daily needs.

Office workers

Ever y day, I just sit in my own place facing the computer screen. So, I hope to have a co-working space, allow me to contact with people from different fields to broaden my horizons. At the same time, some cultural and leisure industries as a relaxation choice after work will be excellent.

Tourists

As a first-time visitor, it would be great to find a place to enjoy local cuisine and rest in such a core area of a city close to the coastline. And at night, We also want to come out to watch the light show or visit commercial center, and experience the night life of Qingdao, which is ver y convenient.

Developer

The purpose of developers is to make profits, but at the same time, a well received project can also help us win a better reputation, both of which are ver y impor tant. Therefore, we hope that this project can take into account both introducing highquality business and serve the surrounding population.

Architect

The architect's duty is to guide the development of architecture and city to the right direction while trying to realize the vision of all people. We will try our best to plan and design from the users' perspective, and also hope that citizens will have a correct understanding on our city through this project.

Step 2 Urban Facade Due to the ownership of the site, its development has been lagging b e h i n d t h e s u r ro u n d i n g a re a s . Therefore, at the urban level, the building density and height within the site are totally inconsistent with the surrounding environment. Especially on the side near the main road, there are obvious faults along the street facade. Therefore, it is necessary to add some new highrise buildings, improve the city facade and skyline, and improve the plot ratio of the site.

The site is surrounded by business office area, residential area and urban commercial Aera. At the same time, the site itself has a specific historical mark too. Therefore, the function and partition of the site should obey the history, meet the demands of different people around to provide them dislocation services, and ser ve as an important node connecting peripheral area to form a multi-functional block . Finally, make it a greater par t in urban development.

The site is surrounded by high-rise buildings, while the interior is mostly low-rise buildings and open space, which forms a pattern similar to the courtyard. Therefore, the concept of "city courtyard" has emerged in urban design. From the whole to the part, the planning always obey the relationship between courtyard and buildings.Combined with the site proposition, it will become a city level comprehensive leisure area, and truly play the multi-functional role of the courtyard.

According to the results of the field survey, several buildings with special historical significance are marked first. They will be preserved as a witness to urban development and as a basis for re-planning, while the rest of the buildings will be demolished. At the same time, there are two axes with clear direction in the site, and the later planning should also follow the direction of these two axes, while retaining the original texture of the site, forming a reasonable planning structure.

DESIGN STRATEGY

2.Integration of Waterfront and Hinterland: In the front-end waterfront area, high-rise office buildings are mainly concentrated, and formed city skyline, then several urban trunk roads are extended inland, forming different functional zones, such as residential and commercial.

3.City Skyline: The height of the building in the site should be coordinated with the urban skyline of the whole area and conform to the changing trend of the building height. Therefore, new high-rise buildings can be built on the south side of the site.

With the introduction of elevated corridor, buildings of different sizes, types and heights in the site are connected in series, which not only provides convenience in transportation, but also forms more interesting tour circulation and space level, and brings rich experience to the crowd, it strengthens the integrity of the site too. The corridor also extends outward to form a cross street overpass, and the connection between the site and the city becomes closer.

SITE PLANNING

Chain

Planning Structure: According to the traffic situation outside the site, four main entrances are determined, and the internal loop, which formed the basic structure, is planned to contact remained buildings.

Office

Functional Partition: On the basis of planning structure, according to the surrounding formats of each plate, the corresponding functions are established to meet the needs of different groups of people.

Automobile Circulation: Four main entrances are regarded as the entrance of the automobile circulation, which is connected with the inner ring road to form a closed loop to facilitate the driving of the vehicle.

Sensitive Infill: Buildings of different scales and shapes are implanted according to the different functions of different zones to provide the necessary space for various formats in the future.

Pedestrian Circulation: Pedestrian circulation have a continuous closed line connecting all areas in series as the main structure, and on this basis extend the branch to other parts.

Public Landscape: Through the transformation and utilization of the same landscape pattern, the scattered node space in the site is linked to make the integrity stronger.

Elevated Corridor: The elevated corridor provides a continuous circulation for pedestrians free from ground traffic, and the corridor extends to CBD across the street, which strengthens the connection between the two sites.

The buildings on the south side of the site conform to the changing trend of the surrounding high-rise buildings, forming a continuous urban interface, and the high-rise buildings are mainly endowed with office format. The west side of the site retains more historical buildings, which are basically low-rise and small-scale buildings, so it can be used as a cultural and creative industrial zone. On the East side, near Vientiane City, commercial buildings have been added to form a continuous commercial belt. At the same time, in the middle of the site, there is a central park, which forms the "courtyard" of the area through the enclosure of surrounding buildings. Similarly, the other four functional areas around the central area also have a public open space, and also form their own internal "courtyard", finally, each area passes through pedestrians. Road and air corridor are linked together, which makes the whole site more dynamic and can become a real "City Courtyard"

Cultural Industry Aera: This area remains the most of historical buildings, and all of them are one story sloping roof styles. Therefore, after the replanning, the area is also dominated by low-rise buildings, and in terms of the appearance and style of the new buildings, it is matched with the remained buildings, whose deformation is based on the sloping roof. As for the format, it includes catering, entertainment, music, art, exhibition and other cultural industries, with a view to making this the most dynamic area of the whole site.

Youth Apartment

Design Specification: The architectural layout of Zhanshan primary school is a typical form of traditional Chinese courtyard, which has a single form and not enough spatial levels. But due to it's high historical value, which was built in the ROC period, we maintained its original building structure and form in this transformation design, and enrich the internal space by adding components, and made it a small leisure building integrating exhibition, catering and accommodation. Inject new vitality into the old building.

Design Specification: The living rooms of the youth apartments are all designed in small units, so that the young people with little savings can also afford the rent of a room in this prime area. On the premise that the basic life can be carried out normally, other functional activities are moved to the public area of each floor. At the same time, there is an open space for all kinds of entertainment and party activities on the first floor to the third floor, aiming to provide a vibrant living unit for the young people in the cultural and creative area.

Theme Museum

Pedestrian Circulation

Design Specification: Based on the prototype of the surrounding historical buildings' rooftop, the theme museum forms a new continuous slope roof through deformation, so that to integrate into the surrounding environment, which not only retains the historical elements, but also has many innovations. At the same time, by means of opening holes and connecting corridors, a complete and continuous tour circulation is organized between buildings to buildings and buildings to square, bringing rich experience for tourists.

Prototype

Leisure Bar Design Specification: The original U-shaped layout of the building forms a semi-enclosed space at the back, while the gap on the north side is next to the elevated corridor. Therefore, the key point of reconstruction lies in the utilization of semi-enclosed space and the connection between building and corridor. Due to the height difference, a new vertical functional body, which is also located in the semi-enclosed space as part of rest space, is implanted. Then, it forms a continuous circulation between building, courtyard and corridor.

In order to create a richer tour experience after the renovation, a new exhibition space has been planted in the middle courtyard. With the circle as the element, several openair courtyards are scattered, which can connect with each other, forming a non-linear circulation, and forming a strong contrast with the original buildings, Through different indoor and outdoor space experiences, bringing visitors a unique feeling.

Design Specification: The conference center is a new building. In order to coordinate with the surrounding historical buildings, its shape adopts the traditional slope roof form. The building also connected with the elevated corridor and can be accessed through the exit of the second floor. The high-rise space at the entrance of the building can be used as a place for people to gather and communicate. The main function of the first floor is reading and leisure. In 1934, a cloth factory was set up, and the next year, a dyeing factory was built, becoming the largest textile printing and dyeing joint enterprise in North China. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War in 1938, Huaxin Yarn Factory was annexed by Japanese merchants, which was called Baolai Yarn Factory in the Japanese unification period. In 1946, it was accepted by China Textile Qingdao Branch. Enterprise bankruptcy in the late 1990s.

On August 15, 1903, German and British businessmen of Germanic Beer Company jointly established "Germanic Beer Company Qingdao Co., Ltd." Japan invaded Qingdao, bought the "German Beer Company Qingdao Co., Ltd." and changed its name to "Big Japan Wheat Wine Co., Ltd. Qingdao Workshop". After Japan's defeat and surrender in August 1945, the KMT Government took over the "Qingdao Workshop" and renamed it "Qingdao Beer Company". After the liberation of Qingdao, the production scale of Tsingtao Brewery is expanding day by day, and its technology and product quality are becoming more and more mature.

On December 1, 1958, Qingdao No.3 Iron and Steel Mill was officially established. On July 1, 1962, Qingdao No.3 Iron and Steel Mill, Qingdao Rolling Mill and Qingdao Wire Rope Mill were merged to establish Qingdao Iron and Steel Mill. On May 18, 1988, Qingdao Iron and Steel Mill merged Lunan Ferroalloy Mill and changed its name to Qingdao Iron and Steel General Company. In 1995 and 1996, Qingdao Iron and Steel Mill suffered serious losses. In 2015, Qingdao Iron and Steel Mill completed the closure of the old plant area and the completion of the new plant area in Jiaonan.

In 1949, the CCP Government took over the factory, and production gradually exceeds Japanese-occupied period. In 1980, China's first hydrostatic press for aluminum carbon nozzle brick was commissioned and put into operation, ending the history of import. After 1985, the factory was gradually derailed from the development of modern industry, and the factory was gradually recession.

BACKGROUND

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

The project is a community library located in a large residential compound area in Laoshan District, Qingdao City, Shandong Province, China. There is a large number of gated residential areas around the site, but there is a lack of a corresponding level of public space as a place for communication and leisure, which aggravates the isolation between communities and has not met the growing social needs of contemporary people. Based on this situation, I chose a small urban park in the center of the residential area to provide a place for people to merge in nature and to communicate with each other through the integration with the natural environment in the park. Neighborhood Composition

There are two metro lines and developed road network in Qingdao City, which provide a convenient transpotation for citizens.

The site is situated between the two main urban roads, surrounded by a large number of residential areas, on the east side is a city-level stadium, and on the south side is an important local scenic spot - Fu Mountain.

Climate The site belongs to temperate monsoon climate, So our project must be suitable for both summer and winter.

Introducing Nature:

Extending the nature of the park on the west side of the site to the interior of the building can integrate the building into the surrounding environment and bring better reading experience to the residents.

Tree-like Structure:

Vertical Connection: By setting up two ramps to enrich the vertical space, people can go up along the ramp to the top of the “trunk” and get a better vision.

Extension of Floor: At different heights of the ramp,

Peripheral Structure: In the periphery of the existing space, a circle of tree columns is added to limit the periphery of the building. At the same time, an open space are formed to connect the eastern commercial space and western park .

Roof Covering:

Detailed Design:

Ground Planning: The road network on the west side of the building is connected with the pedestrian road in the park, and the elevation difference of the entrance on the east side of the building is processed.

The tree columns are placed in the center of the site as the supporting structure of the building, and become the core area of the whole architecture, providing people with the feeling of reading under the tree.

BACKGROUND Qingdao is a coastal city with a long coastline. Most of them were originally warehouses and factory, which got developed into residential areas, scenic spots or commercial centers gradually, to serve tourists and local residents who come to visit. It is against this backdrop that we chose a ferry station located on the west coast of Qingdao, which is about to be abandoned, as the site to repositioning it as a new civic space to benefit the surrounding citizens.

Huangdao District

Yellow Sea Coastline

Qingdao City is located at the entrance of Jiaozhou Bay. It is divided into two parts: the main city in the north and the new Huangdao District in the south. Most of the two urban areas are facing the sea. The winding coastline and the characteristic waterfront such as sea baths and ports are the prominent features of this coastal city.

Nowadays, the development of Qingdao is entering a new stage of urbanization. The development focus of the Northern part of the city has shifted from mega project development to the regeneration of existing built environment. And the whole city will be positioned as the hub of life, tourism, commerce, finance. Urban construction will serve the local people more. Huangdao New Town in the south, as a newly developed area, is in need of strong industrial support to develop economy besides large-scale residential areas and new sites of major universities. Therefore, a large area of international freight ports and container terminals have been built along the coast. The former industrial area of the main city in the north is also gradually shifting to Huangdao to contribute the new city. Based on this,we have investigated the main urban areas in the north and found that the southern coast of the city has formed a systematic coastal planning because it is a major tourist destination, which can provide more public space for citizens to take part in various recreational activities. However, due to the migration of industrial zones and ports in the West Coast, there is no overall connection between the coastal areas and the lack of important spatial nodes to activate the whole area. Ultimately, the site we selected is located next to a high-rise residential area, which was an abandoned ferry station, with a view to re-implanting the site through a new transformation and format as a key point to activate the entire West Coast.

1.Coastal Line Adjustment: The original site is a port on the verge of abandonment, with a mono-functional yet not vertically layered coastline Therefore, first of all, we choose to transform the site and introduce two small bays to make the coastline penetrate into the city. At the same time, the length of the coastline and the area of hydrophilic area are increased, which will be the later stage, which would increase the length of coastline and provide citizens with much more waterfront spaces.

The left harbour is dominated by large-scale public activities, with kayak dock and water theatre; the middle warf is dominated by services, with service centers and marine life conservation buildings; the right harbour is closer to daily life, with natural water swimming pool and water market. At the same time, the stereo parking garage and cruise terminal are set up on the north and south side as important traffic nodes, which improves the accessibility of the site.

This streamline can be easily passed by cyclists and is a part of the coastal traffic line connecting the whole West Coast. The other level is mainly a walkway, which is more waterfront and links all functional areas in series. It can provide better coastal experience for pedestrians.

GROUND FLOOR The project is a small part of the whole village reconstruction, which is two small cottages: No.110 and No.112. The cottage has long been uninhabited and its interior is dilapidated. But the architectural style has strong regional characteristics because of local materials. So, we will continue to keep this style in later reconstruction, and through the new business model, cooperate with the whole village's planning, making this place vibrant again.

Liangquan village is surrounded by mountains on three sides, adjacent to Laoshan reservoir, with superior natural environment. But it is declining because of the loss of young people. The same is happening in every rural area of China. Based on this situation, the Chinese government has launched the strategy of "Rural Revitalization", aim to improve the rural environment and stimulate rural vitality through all efforts.
