Project Requirement As the winning bidder of an enterprise VoIP solution for a world-leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of innovative medical technologies our client looked towards Puffin Solutions to provide engineering resources for the UK element of this global project. The project scope was to manage and install the upgrade of network cabinets, switches, routers and UPS into various manufacturing and sales facilities, minimise downtime for users on the network and supply as fitted drawings as part of the sign off documentation. Although our client had their own engineers their skills were more suited towards the configuration and commissioning of the hardware rather than the installation of the hardware and cabinets, particularly where the installation involved power and data circuits.

Therefore selecting a partner with the correct skill sets to deliver these key elements of the solution was essential to the success of the overall project. The project was broken down into a number of phases. The first phase was the installation of power circuits to allow the provisioning of a UPS. Puffin provided an engineer who attended each site to install the electrical circuit and provide support to our clients in getting the UPS operational.

The next phase involved test installations of cabinets to identify which would be the most suitable for the project. Size, weight and noise reduction were all important factors in identifying the correct choice of cabinet. Following a proof of concept installation Puffin Solutions were instructed to roll the solution out to the remaining sites, this involved auditing Challeneges and removing the hardware circuits, decommissioning and disposing of the old cabinets while preparing site for the installation on the new equipment and hardware circuits. Once the cabinets where prepared for the hardware installation Puffin engineers called off the hardware, chassis and cards from a secure storage location, recorded serial numbers and chassis location slot prior to installation.

Project Requirement Challenges There were a number of challenges along the way. These included the following:Working for different departments with our client and their customer. Puffin had to work closely with the different departments to ensure that the customers requirements were met and the project timescale’s were not compromised.

At the sales offices, the BT circuit had already been installed so great care had to be taken when removing it from the old cabinet and installing it in to the new cabinet.

On some sites this required last minute modification of the cabinets to release the circuit. Installing and testing the additional power requirements for each location. In the manufacturing plant, a number of cabinets already had a significant amount of hardware installed so it was necessary to move this hardware, while live, to make room for the new equipment to be installed.

Puffin’s experience of installing this range of equipment meant that we could identify a safe process for moving the devices without risk to the existing services.

Conclusion Challeneges Puffin Solutions experience in handling a national roll out was essential in this project.

Engineers were able to travel to each site and deal with any requirement quickly and efficiently. Additionally, Puffin was able to work closely with the client’s project team and end customer in a consultative manner to ensure an efficient, professional and above all successful conclusion to the project.
