Project Requirement This Government department based in Plymouth had outgrown their existing server room and therefore approached our client to assist with designing a new facility to house their new network and storage needs.

Following consultation the end client decided to utilise space within another floor of its existing premises to house its new server room. This would allow easy movement of any equipment and limit the risk of damage to expensive servers and switches.

Once the design had been signed off and confirmed with the customer Puffin engineers could start work on decommissioning the equipment within the existing racks, log their U location and rack number then package equipment ready for re location.

In preparing the new location for the racks and network equipment Puffin engineers installed new power sockets and data cabling as per the design, tested and labelled according to regulations.

The scope was to conduct an audit of the existing installation noting where the devices where located and how all they connected together. When the audit was completed and the end client confirmed that all services had been removed, the devices had to be powered down, removed from the racks and stored safely. The empty racks could be removed and transported to the new floor where they were re-installed.

With the racks in the new locations Puffin were able to install the data and power infrastructure Conclusion Project that would support theScope devices. Finally the devices were brought to the new location and installed in the racks where they were connected to the infrastructure ready to be powered up and commissioned.

Project Requirement Challenges The challenges to the project were numerous. The first was the timescale; all of the work needed to take place over a planned outage. The end client needed all the systems brought back on line at the end of the outage so that normal service could resume without further delays. In addition the age and nature of the building meant that specialist lifting equipment needed to be used to move each complete cabinet up the stairs from the old communications room to the new one on the first floor.

Conclusion Project Scope Despite the challenges, Puffin was able to move all the hardware within the timescale’s allowed. The confines of the building meant that specific care had to be taken with moved the hardware but the experience of Puffin engineers meant that this work was completed safely and on time. This in turn meant that the Customers systems came back on line within the planned timescale.
