WHERE PEOPLE GATHER AND CLAIM FOR THEIR RIGHTS AND OTHER POLITICAL ISSUES

A SITE FOR PUBLIC CLAIM, PROTEST AND DEMONSTRATION

DEMOCRATIC SPHERE SHOULD BE SUCH A PLACE WHERE CITIZENS HAVE THEIR FREEDOM TO ACCESS AND SPEAK AND PERFORM THEIR INFORMAL ACTIVITIES AS WELL AS FORMAL ACTIVITIES. BEST OUTCOME OF DEMOCRACY CAN BE OBSERVED BY FOCUSING ON THE PERFORMANCE AND THE OUTCOME, NO MATTER HOW IT LOOKS LIKE IN A CONVENTIONAL WAYS TO PERFORM.

DEMOCRACY IS PERFORMANCES AND IT NEEDS PLATFORMS. DEMOCRATIC SPHERE IS THE SINGLE PLATFORM TO PERFORM DEMOCRACY.

MUNICIPAL BUILDING IS SUCH A PLACE WHERE A FORMAL SPHERE LIKE LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICE AND AN INFORMAL SPHERE LIKE SPACES FOR RECREATION, GOSSIPING, RELAXATION, DEBATING AREA ETC CAN CO-EXIST. WORKED ON URBAN DEMOCRATIC SPHERE AND FROM MY STUDY AND ANALYSIS I TRIED TO ESTABLISH THAT DEMOCRATIC SPHERE IS A PLACE WHERE FORMAL SPHERE [REPRESENTATIVE DEMOCRACY] AND INFORMAL SPHERE [DIRECT DEMOCRACY] CAN PERFORM AT A SINGLE PLATFORM. OTHERWISE TRUE DEMOCRACY CAN NOT BE OBTAINED.

THE PROJECT WAS A GOVERNMENT PROPOSAL DHAKA IS VERY FAST GROWING MEGA CITY. FROM ITS’ EARLY AGE TILL NOW DHAKA HAVE BEEN GROWING TOWARD ITS’ PERIPHERY. TO MAINTAIN THE QUALITY OF LIFE, PROVIDING GREATER SERVICE TO THE CITIZENS AND EFFICIENT GOVERNANCE, BANGLADESH GOVERNMENT HAD DECIDED TO DIVIDE DHAKA MUNICIPALITY INTO TWO PARTS. THE EXISTING CITY CORPORATIONS’ WERE NEWLY NAMED “SOUTH DHAKA CITY CORPORATION (DSCC) WHICH WAS ACTUALLY SOUTHERN PART OF DHAKA CITY. THE NEW PART IS DHAKA NORTH CITY CORPORATION (DNCC) WHICH WAS ESTABLISHED IN 2011.

FOR DNCC, A NEW OFFICE BUILDING WAS NEEDED SEVERAL SITES TO THE GOVERNMENT BUT EACH PROJECT. SO STARTED TO STUDY AND UNDERSTAND DHAKA. I ANALYZED THE SITES DNCC PROPOSED, DHAKA LOTS OF ISSUES WHICH WERE VERY IMPORTANT FOR PROBLEM AS WELL AS ESTABLISHMENT OF A LANDMARK,

FOR THE PROJECT PROPOSED THAT THE SITE WOULD BE AT MOHAKHALI BUS TERMINAL BECAUSE OF ITS LOCATION AT NORTH DHAKA AND FUTURE PROJECTION SAYS THAT IT WILL BE THE MIDDLE OF NORTH DHAKA AND WILL CONNECT SEVERAL PARTS OF DHAKA CITY. IT WAS A 19.5 ACRES OF LAND. THIS BUS TERMINAL WAS A PLACE WITH GREENERY AND NATURAL LAKE FROM ITS’ EARLY AGE. BUT AS THE TIME WENT, IT WAS ACQUIRED ILLEGALLY. THIS TERMINAL HAD BEEN CREATING TREMENDOUS TRAFFIC JAM NOW A DAYS DUE TO ITS’ INTER DISTRICT BUS SERVICES ALL DAY LONG. TRAFFIC PRESSURE AT MOHAKHALI BUS TERMINAL NODE WAS 7086 VEHILES/HOUR APPROXIMATELY WHICH WAS THE HIGHEST AMONG ALL OTHER EXISTING BUSINESS NODE OF DHAKA CITY. BUT THE AUTHORITY COULD NOT FIND ANY SUITABLE SITE FOR IT. THEY PROPOSED TIME REJECTED. DECIDED TO TAKE THIS PROJECT AS MY FINAL YEAR THESIS UNDERSTAND THE HISTORY OF DHAKA, ITS’ MASTER PLAN, GROWTH PATTERN OF NORTH DHAKA CITY ZONING, TRANSPORTATION NETWORK, POPULATION DISTRIBUTION AND A FOR UNDERSTANDING SUITABILITY OF SITE AND SOLUTIONS TOWARD CITY’S EXISTING LANDMARK, A PRIDE FOR THE PEOPLE OF NORTH DHAKA. BY ESTABLISHING DNCC OFFICE BUILDING AND RE-LOCATING THE BUS TERMINAL TO ANY PERIPHERAL AREA OF DHAKA CITY, THE TRAFFIC CONGESTION WILL BE LOWER AND IT WILL CONNECT PEOPLE FROM ALL PARTS OF NORTH DHAKA. THERE WERE NO OPEN AREA FOR PEOPLE. IT WILL ALSO PROVIDE SUFFICIENT PARKS AND OPEN AREA FOR CITIZENS. DESIGN DECISIONS_

THE SITE WAS A NATURAL LAKE AND WATER RETENTION AREA. AS THE SITE HAD LOST IT’S DIGNITY AS A NATURAL LAKE AND GREEN AREA ONCE, BY THIS PROJECT, TRIED TO REVIVE THE LAKE AND PROPOSED TO MAKE IT “OPEN FOR ALL”. THIS SITE WAS LOCATED AT TEJGAON AREA AT DHAKA WHICH WERE AN INDUSTRIAL AREA ONCE. AS A RESULT ADJACENT RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL AREA DID NOT HAVE ANY GREEN OR BREATHING AREA. BY REVIVING THE LAKE AND PROVIDING MAXIMUM GREEN AREA AT THE PROPOSED PROJECT WILL BE A GIFT TO THE CITIZEN.

THIS BUILDING WAS DESIGNED SUCH A WAY THAT IT WOULD ACT LIKE A COOLING MACHINE. FOR COOLING PURPOSE, THE FACADE WAS TREATED IN TWO LAYERS. INNER LAYER THERE WERE AN OPERATING SYSTEM OF WINDOWS WHICH WAS AT 5’-0” DISTANT FROM OUTER LAYER. THIS 5’-0” OFFSET WOULD WORK AS SUN PROTECTIVE SOLUTION. THE OUTER LAYER WAS ACTUALLY GLASS TUBES SPECIALLY DESIGNED TO CONTAIN WATER. THESE NUMEROUS TUBES AT OUTER FACADE WAS ACTUALLY THE FRESH WATER SUPPLY PIPES OF THE BUILDING. WATER FROM UNDERGROUND WATER RESERVOIR PUMPED UP TO THE OVERHEAD WATER RESERVOIR. FROM OVERHEAD WATER TANK, THE FRESH WATER WOULD BE SUPPLIED TO TOILETS IN EACH FLOOR BY USING THIS GLASS TUBES. AS A RESULT THE OUTER FACADE WOULD ACT LIKE A MEMBRANE OF WATER COVERING THE BUILDING. AIR WILL PASS THROUGH THIS GLASS TUBE FACADE AND WITH CONTACT OF WATERY FACADE, IT WOULD DROP ITS’ TEMPERATUREE AND THUS COOL AIR WILL PASS THROUGH THE BUILDING.

STORY OF THE PROJECT

PROJECT BRIEF_ IN THIS STUDIO THERE WERE TWO STAGES TO DEVELOP IDEAS. AT PRIMARY STAGE, STUDYING ON A VISUAL ARTIST’S WORK, HIS/HER PHILOSOPHY OF PAINTINGS VIGOROUSLY AND MAKE AN ABSTRACTION [SCULPTURE] OF HIS/HER WORK BASED ON HIS/HER PHILOSOPHY

AT THE SECOND STAGE, DESIGNER HAD TO DESIGN AN ART GALLERY FOR THE ARTIST THAT HAD BEEN STUDIED IN PREVIOUS STAGE. IN THIS STAGE, AN IMAGINARY SITE AREA MEASURING 500’-0”X302’-0” [3.5 ACRES APPROX.] HAD BEEN PRO VIDED BY STUDIO TUTORS. AN EXTRA FUNCTION OF AUDITORIUM COMPLEX HAD BEEN ADDED WITH THE MAIN FUNCTION OF THE PROJECT THE SITE HAD A LAKE AT ITS’ NORTH.

IDEA GENERATION_ AS I STUDIED ON THE ARTIST PIET MONDRIAN, I LOOKED THROUGH HIS PHILOSOPHY OF ART AND I FOUND THAT ALL THE COLORED BOXES WERE IN HARMONY AND REPRESENTED THE BOXES AS NOT ACTUALLY BOXES BUT AS LINES OF BASIC COLORS [RED, BLUE, YELLOW] ARRANGED AS PIXELS OF THREE BASIC COLORS. FROM THE PLAN OR ELEVATION VIEWS [2D VIEWS], IT SEEMS VARIOUS BOXES ORGANIZED WITHIN SOME LINES WHICH WERE MAKING RECTANGULAR AND SQUARE FORMS BY INTERSECTING EACH OTHER. BUT FROM PERSPECTIVE OR AXONOMETRIC VIEW [3D VIEWS], IT SEEMED TO ME THAT ALL THE PIXELS OF COLORS ON EACH LINE IS ACTUALLY NOT PIXELS. THERE WERE HUNDREDS OF LINES ARRANGED IN VARIOUS LAYERS. THEY HAD SPACES BETWEEN THEM. I TRIED TO TAKE THIS OBSERVATION AS AN IDEA TO IMPLEMENT ON THIS PROJECT

ABSTRACTIONOF MONDRIAN’SPAINTING

PURE GEOMETRIC FORMS ARE PRESENT EVERYWHERE IN NATURE. THE ERA OF NEO PLASTICISM SHOWS US THE NEW WAY OF EXPRESSION OF SIMPLICITY. THIS IS THE STYLE WHICH IS THE SIMPLEST AND IDEAL FORM OF ART BY USING BASIC FORM AND COLOR. THE STYLE DEVELOPED AND CHARACTERIZED BY ARTIST PIET MONDRIAN. IF WE LOOK AT HIS PAINTING AND SYNTHESIZE THEM, STORY CAN BE FOUND AS HE TRIED TO DEPICT IN HIS PAINTING ANY SUBJECT OR OBJECT BY USING ITS SIMPLEST FORM TO CONVEY THE UNIVERSAL AND ABSOLUTE TRUTH. ARTIST USED STRAIGHT LINES [HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL], SQUARE AND RECTANGULAR FORMS, PURE COLORS WHICH HAD BEEN SYNCHRONIZED WITH EACH OTHER WITH TIMELESS BALANCE.

THE BASIC CONCEPT CAME FROM THE IDEA OF NEO PLASTICISM AND THE INTERPRETATION OF IT AS LAYERS OF LINES WHICH ARRANGED ORTHOGONALLY MAKING ENORMOUS GRID CONTAINS VOLUME. THE VARIOUS RECTANGULAR FORMS WHICH WERE CREATED BY THOSE LINES AND DEFINED SPACES ARE ARRANGED AT AN ANGLE OF 45 DEGREE WITH THE GRID.

THE GRIDS WHICH WERE STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS, WERE ORTHOGONAL WITH EACH OTHER AND THE CIRCULATION ALSO KEPT ORTHOGONAL. THE EXHIBITION SPACES WERE ARRANGED ROTATING 45 DEGREE WITH RESPECT TO THE GRID.

PRE-EXISTING TREES ARE OFTEN SEEN AS A LIMITATION TO ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN. THEY RESTRICT HOW BIG A BUILDING CAN BE; THEY CAN BLOCK A NICE VIEW, AND THEY CANNOT BE MOVED CHEAPLY. SOMETIMES, IT SEEMS MORE CONVENIENT TO CUT THEM DOWN ALTOGETHER. HOWEVER, SOME ARCHITECTURAL TYPES ARE SEEING OLD TREES AS A CHALLENGE TO BE EMBRACED RATHER THAN AN OBSTACLE TO BE RECKONED WITH. BY ATTEMPTING TO PRESERVE PRE-EXISTING TREES RATHER THAN TAKE THEM DOWN, DESIGNERS ARE FINDING THE POTENTIAL TO CREATE NOVEL RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE NATURAL AND THE MAN-MADE. ONE RADICAL METHOD TO ACHIEVE THIS IS TO INTEGRATE TREES INTO THE VERY FABRIC OF THE NEW BUILDING. BEYOND PRESERVING SOME NATIVE FORESTRY, THIS CAN LEAD TO SOME SURPRISING EXPERIMENTATIONS, AS THE TREES ARE RECONTEXTUALIZED WITHIN THE HUMAN-BUILT ENVIRONMENT. THESE SIX BUILDINGS DON’T JUST PAY HOMAGE TO NEARBY TREES: THEY PUT FULL TRUST IN THEIR ABILITY TO REMAIN A HALLMARK OF THE LAND, ONLY WITH NEW NEIGHBORS TO COHABIT WITH. UNDERSTANDING THE INTENSE PLANNING AND THE CONCEPTUAL DEVELOPMENG OF THE ORIGINAL BUILDING, THIS TRANFORMATION APPROCHES TO MULTIPLY IN THE SAME LOCATION EXTENDING ITS ARMS THROUGH THE FOREST. THE PROJECT AIMS TO PROVIDE MULTIPLE HOUSING INA A NEWLY DESIGNED CASA LEVENE COMPLEX. IT WEAVE THROUGH THE FOREST AND CONSTRUCTED WITHOUT DAMAGING A SINGLE TREE, OR THE SOLO HOUSE II, AN OFF-GRID DWELLING THAT ALMOST DISSOLVES INTO THE LANDSCAPE. AN EBONIZED STEEL RAIN SCREEN BUILT OF THREE-INCH BY THREE-INCH ANGLES SPACED ONE INCH APART REPEATS THE TEXTURE AND FUNCTION OF THE BARK OF ADJACENT TREES. MATERIALITY AND FENESTRATION ARE ORDERED AS DARK LIGHT REVERSALS THAT REPEAT THE BEHAVIOR OF THE FOREST. A CONCEALED, DIRECTIONAL ENTRY BUILDS TIME INTO THE ARRIVAL SEQUENCE, EXTENDING AND CONNECTING THE EXPERIENCE TO THE ENVIRONMENT. MOVEMENT ALONG THE ROUTE TO THE ENTRY POINT, PARALLEL WITH THE FORM, ALLOWS ASSOCIATION WITH THE DWELLING PRIOR TO ENTERING. TRANSLUCENT ORANGE GLASS SCREENS BATHE THE ENTRANCE IN A COLOR THAT CONTRASTS WARM WITH THE TONE OF THE SURROUNDING EVERGREEN FOREST. OVERALL, THE TRANFORMATION CARRIES ALL THE ASPECTS AND FEATURES OF THE ORIGINAL LEVENE HOUSE AND SPEAKES THE SAME CHARACTERISTICS TOWARDS THE NATURE

THE MAIN IDEA OF THE STUDIO WAS TO UPCYCLE AVAILABLE TRASH FROM HOUSEHOLDS OR DAY-TO-DAY USED MATERIALS. AS A GROUP OF FOUR MEMBERS, WE TOOK PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS OF EVERY KIND AND TRY TO UNDERSTAND THEIR’ MATERIAL PROPERTIES AND TRANSFORMATION AGAINST HEAT. WE DID SEVERAL EXPERIMENTS BY HEATING THE PLASTIC BAGS AT DIFFERENT CONTROLLED TEMPERATURES. WE MADE SEVERAL PROTOTYPES TO COME UP WITH A SOLUTION FOR A PLASTIC STRUCTURE OUT OF PLASTIC SHOPPING BAGS ONLY. WE FOUND THAT BY LAYERING BAGS AND HEATING SLOWLY AT 180-DEGREE TEMPERATURE THE PLASTIC BECOMES STRONG ENOUGH TO CARRY LOADS.

WE DEVELOPED A SYSTEM FOR THE SKIN OF THE STRUCTURE BY SEWING LAYERS OF PLASTIC BAGS TOGETHER. THEN WE CUT THEM INTO STRIPS AND WEAVE THEM IN A CONVENTIONAL WAY TO MAKE SURFACE. WE USED HEAT PRESS TO GLUE THE SURFACE WITH THE ALREADY-DEVELOPED STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS OUT OF PLASTIC BAGS AS WELL.

THE BASIC CONCEPT OF OUR PROJECT IS TO CREATE AN AREA IN WHICH THE STRUCTURE WE HAVE CREATED HAS A LEADING ROLE AND IS THEREFORE USED FOR DIFFERENT FUNCTIONS AND USERS. OUR BASIC STRUCTURE, A SEMI-SPHERE, CAN ACCOMMODATE VARIOUS FUNCTIONS WITH ITS’ DIFFERENT SIZES. FOR THE SAME MODULE, WE HAVE THOUGHT OF DIFFERENT SIZES FOR DIFFERENT USES. WE WANTED TO CREATE A SPACE THAT ALLOWS ADULTS TO EXPERIENCE THE SPHERE AS THEIR CHILDERN BUT IN A BIGGER SCALE.

PROJECT BRIEF_ THE PROJECT WAS PROPOSED ON AN IMAGINARY SITE WHICH WAS PRO VIDED BY STUDIO TUTORS. TOTAL LAND AREA WAS 88,875 SFT [2.04 ACRES] THE SITE WAS SITUATED BESIDE A NATURAL LAKE AT THE NORTH WITH A NATURAL LANDSCAPE IN DHAKA AT BANGLADESH. THE MAIN ACCESSIBLE ROAD OF THE SITE WAS FROM WEST STUDENTS WERE ASKED TO PROPOSE A MUSEUM TYPE IN TERMS OF ITS’ COLLECTIONS OR DISPLAY IT SHOULD BE A SCIENCE MUSEUM.

THE MAIN CHALLENGES WERE THE SITE ORIENTATION AND MULTI FUNCTIONALITY OF THE PROJECT AS IN BANGLADESH, THE WEST SUNLIGHT IS CONSIDERED AS THE MOST HEAT GAINING FACTOR AND THE SITE WAS EXPOSED TO THE WEST MOST, IT WAS A CHALLENGE TO TREAT THE FACADE OF THE MUSEUM CRITICALLY NOT COMPROMISING THE AESTHETIC QUALITY OF THE WEST FACADE. AT THE SAME TIME IT WAS ALSO IMPORTANT TO MAKE THE BUILDING INTERESTING TO THE VIEWER BY PROVIDING NEW AND SOMETHING UNCONVENTIONAL CHARACTER OF THE BUILDING.

THERE WERE OTHER FUNCTIONS ALSO LIKE AN AUDITORIUM FOR 500 PEOPLE, A SEMINAR ROOM, A CAFETERIA INCLUDING KITCHEN HAD TO INCORPORATE IN THE PROJECT

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY_ AS I PROPOSED TO DESIGN A MUSEUM FOR NATURAL SCIENCE, I FOCUSED ON BIRDS. THE CONCEPT DERIVED FROM WINGS OF BIRD. THE REPETITIVE PATTERN OF BIRD’S WING AND THE LIGHTNESS OF THE FEATHER ALLOWS AIR TO MAINTAIN THEIR BODY TEMPERATURE. THE REPETITIVE PATTERN OF THE FARE FACE WALL OF PROPOSED MUSEUM ALLOWS LIGHT AS WELL AS AIR IN SOME PORTION OF THE MUSEUM WHICH GIVES AN ABSTRACT MODERNIST IMPRESSION OF BIRD’S WING.

IN OUR DESIGN, THE MAIN CONCEPT OF THE MASTER PLAN WAS TO CREATE A BIG OPEN SPACE AT THE CENTER OF THE SITE WHICH IS CONNECTED WITH A SMALL CHUNK OF OPEN SPACES THUS CREATING A FLOW OF OPEN SPACES. THE CENTRAL OPEN SPACE IS PROVIDED WITH AMENITIES I.E. CENTRAL PARK, AN OPEN FIELD, A BOAT CLUB, ETC. WE TRIED TO REDUCE PRESSURE FROM MOTORIZED VEHICLES BY LESSENING VEHICULAR ROADS, WHICH ARE CONNECTED TO TAXI/RICKSHAW STANDS AND CARS MOVING UNDER THE PLAZA. THE TOTAL SITE IS CONNECTED THROUGH SOFT/HARD PAVES FOR PEDESTRIAN MOVEMENT. RATHER THAN KEEPING THE BUILDINGS ISOLATED, THEY ARE KEPT CONNECTED IN A GROUP OF 3 THROUGH THE PLAZA LEVEL. THE PLAZA LEVEL IS ALSO PROVIDED WITH BUILDING FACILITIES I.E. GYMNASIUM, PRAYER SPACES, ETC. THERE ARE 3 NEIGHBORHOODS IN OUR SITE AND NH FACILITIES I.E. PRIMARY SCHOOL, MOSQUE, HEALTH CLINIC, AND CORNER SHOPS ARE PROVIDED INDIVIDUALLY FOR EACH NH RATHER THAN KEEPING THEM IN A CLUSTER. IN EACH BUILDING, THERE IS A TRIPLE-HEIGHT SPACE IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BUILDING WHICH WORKS AS A COMMUNITY SPACE SO THAT UPPER-STORY RESIDENTS CAN USE THE SPACE. THIS TRIPLE-HEIGHT SPACE IS A THOROUGH VOID THROUGH WHICH WIND FLOW CAN PASS THROUGH.

PROJECT BRIEF_ INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT COMPANY LIMITED (IDCOL) WILL STAND OUT AS A LEADING PROJECT IN SUSTAINABLE DESIGN IN AN URBAN CONTEXT LIKE AGARGAON, DHAKA, BANGLADESH.

THE SITE WAS A VERY SMALL SITE [60’X120’] COMPARING WITH THE FUNCTIONS TO BE ACCOMMODATED. THE SITE ORIENTATION WAS EAST-WEST ELONGATED WHICH WILL MAKE THE BUILDING EXPOSED TO DIRECT SUN WHICH WAS THE PRIME CONCERN TO BE SOLVED.

WAS THE TEAM LEADER AND CORE DESIGNER FOR THIS COMPETITION FROM CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT TO FINAL DESIGN OUTPUT.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY_ THE MAIN CONCEPT OF THIS DESIGN REVOLVES TO SOLVE THE EXISTING EAST WEST ORIENTATION OF THE SITE. TO MAXIMIZE THE NATURAL VENTILATION AND OPTIMIZE THE DIRECT HEAT FROM THE SUN WITHOUT COMPROMISING THE NATURAL DAYLIGHT INTO THE BUILDING, WE DIVIDED THE MASS INTO TWO TOWERS WHICH ARE CONNECTED BY CIRCULATION INTERNALLY. THE SPACE BETWEEN TWO TOWERS FACILITATE TO MAXIMIZE THE NATURAL VENTILATION ALL THROUGH THE BUILDING. THE SPACE ALSO ACCOMMODATES SOME GREEN TERRACES WHICH WORKS AS BREATHING SPACE FOR OFFICE EMPLOYEES AND MOST IMPORTANTLY IT WILL FUNCTION AS LIGHT REFLECTORS INTO THE OFFICE SPACE. THESE TERRACES WILL ASSIST TO COLLECT RAINWATER AS WELL.

THE REASON OF GRADUAL RECESSING OF MASSES AT FRONT FACADE ARE TO PRO VIDE SHADING FROM THE DIRECT SUN AT OFFICE TIME. A NEW SHADING DEVICE HAS BEEN INTRODUCED WHICH WILL CONTROL THE SUNLIGHT WHERE THE MASS IS EXPOSED TO DIRECT SUN. THIS DEVICE IS A COMBINATION OF LIGHT REFLECTOR AND A PASSAGEWAY FOR RAIN WATER COLLECTION. THIS DEVICE WILL BE CONNECTED WITH THE TERRACES WHICH WILL COLLECT RAIN WATER AND RAIN WATER WILL GO THROUGH THE PIPE IT CONTAINS TO THE RAINWATER RESERVOIR.
