O L D YOUNG

The older and the younger generation in China are no longer living together. On the one hand, the layout of highrise residential buildings is designed for small families. On the other hand, with the prevailing of the technology devices, the gap between young people and the elderly gets wider. The lifestyles and values of the two generations are inevitably contradictory, and the problems faced by living together are getting more. However, it is undeniable that there is a strong family link between the two generations even they are living apart.

5

LOOP THE GENERATIONS

04.2018-05.2018 “天伦之乐” A word describes the highest joy when we are alive, that is to live with your families. China is a country that entered the industrial era relatively late but has a long history. In the four thousand years of history, our economic structure has always been dominated by agriculture. As the most stable production unit in society, family has always been valued by Chinese philosophers. Therefore, Confucian emphasized the concept that a family should live together and perform their duties. The traditional Chinese architectural form of the courtyard is actually an interpretation of this family ethics. However, Industrial Revolution destroyed the former production units. What's more, the urbanization has led an rapid increase in the population density of urban areas. With limited land resources, we must build high-rise residential buildings to meet the housing demands. In this way, we lost the yard which is core of traditional lifestyle. Two generations have gradually separated from this time. However, Chinese have a strong family consciousness. Even if we have the economic ability to live independently, we still think that the best best choice is to live with our extended family I begin to think whether we can design a new residential typology which can both be high-rised and possible for generations to live together in a modern way.

The relationship between generations in the last 100 years What is next ?

Family based mixed community

“It is necessary to establish an oldage supporting system which is based on family, community, and supported by professional institutions.” ——Xi Jinping High-rised residential building

"When parents are alive, the youngest should not leave far away. " ——Confucius

7

The complex relationship in families When they live together Both the young and old may quarrel for small things due to their different habits. However, no one is right or wrong in most situations.

When they live apart Since they live apart, there is not much topics to share on the phones. Both old and young wish to see each other but find they have little things to say when meet. When they share a space with clear boundary What if the old and young can live apart independently but have a family garden which can be used by both? This space can be a blurred boundary and resolve many contradictions

The complex relationship in communities When they share public space Given that people in different age have different habbits, it's common that they quarrel for public space. The old may find skatebroads dangerous while the young think dancing noisy.

When they have their own space In fact, most neighbourhoods in China are naturally divided by generations. The young enjoy live together, so does the old. It turns out that the gap between generations is wider.

When they meet at certain places It's necessary that both generations have their own communities. H o w e v e r, t h e r e s h o u l d b e somewhere they can communicate in a way they both feel comfortable.

8

loop for the young

The community of young people should be energetic and equipped with various of shared spaces. Here, young people can enjoy a rich social life. Therefore, shared spaces such as laundry, gym, swimming pool, library and so on are connected by a circular runway. This loop rises from the ground, reaches the topmost shared space and finally returns to where it starts.

9

loop for the old

The Loop for the elderly focus more on the improvement of the old-age facilities. In this loop, the bottom space is equipped with care facility and physical rehabilitation center. The upper stage is an open garden with plenty of sunlights which is suitable for the elderly to walk, chat and rest.

10

The mixed community - A Home for Old and Young I am from a mixed family. My father is from the country and my mother is from the city. In the country, the ancestor worship and family relationships still exist, but in the city, these things gradually fade over time. Since childhood, my father has always wanted to be close with relatives, and my mother wanted to keep a distance from them. For this reason, they often argued. On the one hand, I also had strong expectations for those extended family lives. On the other hand I can also understand my mother's feeling. The values and interests of the two generations are too different. Elders tend to be in charge of the younger generation, even though my parents are already independent.

11

Since then, I have been thinking about how to m closer without affecting each other. In the Chinese r no application to this ethical relationship. But since 2 consider the issue of population aging. Since the pe completed, the government advocates the familythe social needs of two generations to live together

After talking with my tutor, I decided to design a c home for both generations.

FAMILY GARDEN

A shared space for two families In this community, all households will live with their parents or children. How to establish the boundaries and connections between is the biggest problem. In the traditional Chinese courtyard, the courtyard connects two generations. Since it is surrounded, it can be seen as a private space. Meanwhile, it has publicity since it is open to everyone. Therefore, the concept of the garden fits well in this situation.

Case A the position of garden

Various functions of the Family Garden Different families have different characteristics. Some have dinner with the whole family. Others may enjoy watching TV together or playing chess. Therefore, the functions of the shared garden are not limited. Different families will design it differently.

A BOUNDARY IN A BOOKSTORE

07.2018-10.2018

"why do we still need physical bookstores especially in China where online shopping is convinient?" The first problem with the collapse of physical bookstores is the further strain on public resources. After 1978, China created the "China speed" that astonished the world. On the one hand, the fast urbanization process has constructed the basic elements needed for the city to create economic value, but some public space like parks and libraries is extremely scarce. As a result, some commercial spaces undertake the functions which should be provided by cities. For example, Starbucks offers free seating for outdoor chat, and large shopping malls become a place for citizens to gather in extremely hot weather. Since the physical bookstores have lower entry barriers, they assume more social functions, and these functions must squeeze private business resources. On the other hand, Many bookstores undertake the responsibility of disseminating knowledge in a region. Social media advocates bookstores as the "second library" for the citizens. However, these people does not directly bring profit. Therefore, many physical bookstores have become a charity project for large enterprises. They take this opportunity to improve their social status. Can we design a new model that can draw a clear line among these complex relationship which helps physical bookstores benefit both private owners and public?

26

looking for free air conditioner

"The bookstore complements the lack of urban public space at the social level."

Driven by the fast urbanization process, the public space of the city becomes increasingly scarce. In Chinese cities, activities such as enjoying the cool are subconsciously taken over by other functional spaces. Cafes, shopping malls, bookstores and subway stations have become the backbone to complement the public space. These private businesses must find good ways to get along with the social functions they are forced to accept.

"Even dogs have phones, but we still find it difficult to find a plug when you hang around on streets."

looking for free hang-out place

"Bookstores provide activities but make the payment non compulsory." 27

The biggest problem with physical bookstores is they offer services that cannot be calculated and paid for. But the bookstore can't force the customers to buy books. In fact, when the environment quality increase, more customers will buy books. In this way they lose the basic cost guarantee. Anyone can enjoy this free service without being ashamed of it.

"The main potential customers of bookstores."

looking for babysitting

looking for plugs/wifi In China, the mobile phone penetration rate reaches 96%, and many smartphones have a battery life of less than one day. But there are no public facilities in China that can provide paid charging service. When your phone is out of power, the bookstore becomes the first option because it can be accessed without paying, providing seating and a quiet environment. Again,The bookstores are forced to assume this public function.

"parents find bookstores are the best places to leave their children when they are working."

looking for potential nice books The biggest potential customers of physical bookstores are those who choose books in their lounging. In order to ensure the comfortable experience of these people, the bookstores will open some books for them to try , provide a quiet environment and comfortable seats. However, these facilities are opened to other citizens without limitations.Consequently, its quality and efficiency were greatly reduced.

In China, the proportion of full-time parents is very high. When it comes to winter and summer vacations, how to look after children becomes a problem. In the bookstore, children make friends, read books, and are safe in public indoors. Parents have no worries during work. However, these children also may destroy books and make noises, causing certain losses to the bookstore.

looking for instant purchase of a certain book

"You search for a certain book in Amazon, but you never know whether a bookstore have it unless you walk in."

The e-book market has a huge search engines, one-click orders, door-todoor service, but one can not get his books in a short time. So,for some urgent needs, physical bookstores are more in line with their needs. But the reality is that customers can't know which physical bookstore in the neighborhood can buy the book, so in an emergency, they can only search one after another. 28

QUESTION we need to build a soft but clear boundary For those people who have no intention to pay for the books, they are only offered with limited resource. However, they can still kill time in bookstores. For those who really want to buy a nice book, they shall have their own space.

SOLUTION step1> identification

step 2>

Research, summarize, and classify different functional requirements of different customers.

Separate the spaces of the two groups of customers according to the functions they demand.

isolation

step 3>

creation

Analyze the commonalities so that the boundary becomes a medium separating but connecting the two.

IDEAS the research of different kinds of boundaries A creative boundary should have three basic elements, seperability (to what extend can it separate the two spaces), functionality (how much can self-dissolve), flexibility (whether there is a flexibility in the time dimension)

BETWEEN CITY & COUNTRY modern lives

countryside lives

Group Work (11 numbers) 07.2017-

"Chinese urban traditional culture has collapsed, and rural culture can still be rescued." —— Wang Shu ( the winner of Pritzker in 2012) In China, many people yearn for modern city lives. In less than three decades, China has created striking urbanization speed. Beijing and Nanjing, the ancient capitals which have profound cultural deposits, don't look much difference with the modern cities. When we looked back, we found that there was no traditional culture left in the city. However, there is no way to restore it. Even worse, people turned their eyes to the countryside and attempted to push Chinese traditional architecture to modernization while rebuilding the countryside. However, most of these practices remain to be implemented. And for a majority of villagers in China, to build a western style villa is what they dream about. In their opinion, that is what called "fancy." If the designer considers to keep the sloped roof or the rammed earth wall, it will be refused with anger. After all, for the occupants, inheriting culture is definitely not the priority of building a home. Therefore, innovation in traditional building systems has become extremely important. We need to understand the essence of this system and inject the soul into new materials and forms. These designs need to be practiced repeatedly to ensure that they can be widely accepted by the villagers. Even now, Chinese villages are still being damaged at an unbelievable rate. Therefore, we must fight against time to create this new system, with a very pragmatic spirit.

before the transformation

Logic Behind the Collision During designing, I saw this fluid collision test on YouTube. The two colors will collide in a special case to form two vortex rings. The performers have experimented hundreds of time in order to find an absolutely precise environment. Sometimes, one color will spread out. Sometimes the two sides bypass each other. In the other situation, they merge but do not produce rings. It accured to me that the same problem also appears in the design. The collision between urban and rural areas is basically a collision between Chinese traditional culture and indiscriminate modernism. The biggest difficulty lies in how to create an ideal collision. For the traditional building system, what should we retain, the spatial organization logic, material, form or function? And the same problem also exist in to the modern building systems.

a successful collision A ideal collision can create new forms and colors. The new form of vitality will be strong, have a certain universality, and can be quickly promoted.

a reproduction If the concept of one side is too strong, then the new system will no longer exist, and the design can be called reproduction rather than creation.

a collage If the concepts of both sides are strong, but there is no internal logical connection, then the new system is a collage of both styles which is the worst.

Therefore, we need to establish a reasonable collision logic.

This is a experiment of instability and reconnection in the head-on collision of two vortex rings. The video was shoot by SmarterEveryday.

10/2017-11/2017 First Prize Tianhua "ART&TECH" National Undergraduate Architectural Design Competition tutor: Sam Cho samchosgp@outlook.com/+86-15872364829 Individual Redesign 11/2018

The total economic output of mankind in the last two hundred years exceeds the sum of all the totals before the industrial revolution. However, office space has hardly changed in the past 100 years. Actually, the reason is obvious. No matter how the production structure changes, the production process does not leave the physical space. However, in the decades after the birth of the Internet, the industrial structure and working methods have undergone dramatic changes. Some production and trading process that depends on physical space can be done online. The concept of the Internet breaks the space limit of the workplaces. All changes are forcing traditional public spaces to innovate. So what is the new office space typology? It is true that cafes, cabins, and even bedrooms can be office now, but none of them are universal. In fact, people can work in any place with network and Internet devices. In other words, the ubiquitous networks and equipment are the real future office typology.

Larkin Building has an open office space in the atrium. Four or six employees can sit in front of a work desk together. The staffs all worked in a large office hall so they can be easily supervised by superiors.

The Seagram Building had a large space with no barriers to be freely divided. The height of the inner layer has increased so the pipeline and electrical equipment can be hide in the ceilings. What's more, the rise of high-rise office buildings as well as the standardized design have reduced costs of construction.

In the same period of landscape office, another group of designers thought dividing the employees into groups can improve efficiency. Numbers of atriums between the groups and groups are decorated with green plants for staffs to rest and talk. The “cross-shaped layout of the Centraal Beheer Building is repeated so the groups and the atriums can be combined regularly.

"Mobile office" is not a concept that has just emerged. With the popularity of laptops, personal w or k s t a tions c an be mo v ed a t any time. Tha t w a s the per iod when mobile o f f ic es ha v e bec ome p opular. Another very important thing is the platform that stores large amounts of data. These data can be uploaded and downloaded at any time via the Internet. Based on this, even the computer itself can be shared. People only need to create an account on the platform and their work data will be safely stored. In other words, any computer that logs into a personal account can become a private computer. In this way, the virtual platforms and accounts are the actual form of the future workspace. When people log in to the account, the mass of demands is released. On this platform, resources are allocated and reorganized to promote suitable corporations. According to what is mentioned above, the typology of the future office is a huge, dynamic, complex network that is not visible. It does not mean the physical offices are no longer needed. Actually, they remain essential but not at a leading place. 57

From virtual to reality —— How to visualize this huge, dynamic, complex network? When we "see" something, we don't necessarily see its entity, but see its essence. For example, the leaves floating in the air means the wind is up. Although the wind itself is invisible, we can also "see" it by its influence on other visible objects. The same logic can be established in current and magnetic fields.

How to make the electric current visible?

Use the bubbles !!!

The visualization of virtual net —— The We Cloud Bubble System Based on this logic. Invisible office networks can also be achieved by lighting up the bubbles. The users work in different places in the city. When they log into the We Cloud system, their locations are highlighted. By clarifying these locations, we can almost "see" a complete office WWnetwork.

Correspondence in reality —— The Online Office Space Retail System Corresponding to the virtual office network platform is the physical office space. In the future of mobile office, those offices based on the long-time lease is out of date. Offices will be rented by hours, in units. The workspace can be rented in time just like those shared bicycles since this kind of offices is placed everywhere.

What can the bubbles do? From a macro perspective, bubbles are actually a visualization of the internal use of the building space. The different states of a bubble, such as illuminating, flashing, can express different conditions. For those workers, the bubble is a signal processor that connects the worker to the office network. Considering its size, it can also project some information of public interest.

Single Usually the single bubble is arranged in tiny offices that can only host a small group of workers. After loading in, the bubble will give out light and project the team's name and logo.

Group Group of bubbles ususally appear at large office space. The proportion of the lighted bubbles shows the space utilization

projector The projector can move up and down and rotate around. It is capable of projecting workers' work information.

The location and size of the workspace are less important, since the trading process is not restricted to physical space. Therefore, the offices belong to We Cloud can be arranged in the negative space in the city, such as the ground space under the viaduct. It can also be combined with urban public facilities. Case A provides an example of a combination with a public pavilion.

CaseB

an application in a co-working center with group of bubbles

Case B is a city-level office center. Great numbers of workers share their ideas here. The office also provides some entrepreneurial support according to the policies. The whole building is built on the edge of an ancient city wall. The city wall has partially collapsed during the old days. The building serves to repair the city's remains because the office building is designed to make up the outline of the city wall.

O T H E R W O R K S Design and Construction of the School Busboard

HUST is considered to be the university with the least cultural heritage in China. But in fact, there are many historical sites on campus but they are not well publicized. Therefore, we found some small attractions around the school's 22 school bus stops, and briefly introduced some interesting history on the boards. While waiting for the school bus ,the students may get a better understanding of the campus culture.

White on white / Line on Line

shoot from a YouTube video

The core of this project is to come up with an individual definition of "white" and "line". As a color, white can hardly be seen piled up. Therefore, I use white paper with different textures to show the difference between the "upper white" and the "under white". As for the line, I was inspired by the outline of paper when burned. Those lines change due to the shape of the flame. The whole work is like a large pile of papers which can never be burned through.
