here aren’t too many other
industries that feel more like a family than the MRO industry. Coupled with this, you find numerous examples of parents and children, or siblings working together.
However, it’s not every day that you find twins working for a company, let alone owning a company. We got the opportunity to sit down with David and Daniel Romaris, owners of AvGen Aerospace, located in Miami, Florida.

145 MAGZINE Before we talk about AvGen, can you tell me a little about what life was like growing up together as twins?
DAVID:
D
aniel and I grew up in Miami,
Florida as the children of immigrant parents and we’ve been blessed to spend all of our lives there. It’s not a bad place to live. Growing up, when we were kids, our parents pretty much always dressed us alike when we went out, which led to
The funny thing is, that I never got upset if people asked. I didn’t even mind if people whispered to the person next to them and pointed at us. Nowadays we sometimes dress alike by coincidence and through the years we’ve probably heard every twins joke imaginable.
us being asked, “Are you twins?” a million and one times.
DANIEL: Growing up we got along very well. We each had our own friends which would eventually end up being both of our friends. In high school people I had never met would walk up to me and say “Hi.” Sometimes I’d let them know I was the wrong brother and other times I would just go along with it because it seemed hilarious. We also played tricks on girlfriends especially when they insisted they could tell us apart. We basically took that as a challenge to trick them.
DAVID: As adults we both attended Embry Riddle Aeronautical University and got degrees in Aviation Business Administration. Choosing the same degree helped as we could help each other on assignments and on choosing the best professors for each class.
We also enjoy similar hobbies like cars, fishing and boating, which comes in handy as we share ownership of a boat, cutting costs and cleaning duties in half.

145 MAGZINE Why did you guys decide to go into aviation repair?
DAVID:
A
s far back as I could remember both Daniel and I have been
fascinated by the technical aspect of things. When we were kids we would play with RC cars and airplanes, but as the years passed our interest continued to grow. As a kid I wanted to be in the aviation industry because, to me, the aviation industry always represented the highest level of quality, requiring high technical expertise.
We both attended George T. Baker (Aviation Technical College) during high school and as adults, where we received our Airframe and Powerplant licenses. We were lucky enough to both be hired at the same time by Hamilton Sundstrand, at their OEM Accessory Repair shop, as technicians right out of school. The years we spent there taught us so much about electric power generation. Eventually both of us would transition into customer service roles, handling large accounts such as Boeing, Southwest and American Airlines. Once we understood and gained experience in the many process of MRO operation it became obvious where our future paths led.
145 MAGZINE When did you know it was time to start your own business?
DANIEL: Both David and I have always wanted to have our own business.

145 MAGZINE How does your background influence AvGen’s area of focus, or what parts you all work on?
DANIEL: All three of us were fortunate enough to have extensive background in OEM repair which helped us create our own internal lean production methods and quality standards. This experience and confidence in our skills steered us towards are capabilities today: Electric power generation, electromechanical units, coffeemakers, ovens and other galley components. Our true passion however is power generation where we consider ourselves experts in this field as a result of OEM training, experience and extensive certification.

145 MAGZINE What are some of the problems you faced from the start?
DAVID: One of the greatest challenges we experienced was obtaining our FAA Repair Station license. We wrote all our manuals and created our forms which turned out to be a sizeable undertaking.
With long hours of hard work, tons of Cuban coffee, and guidance from the FAA we were able to achieve our goal of becoming a 145 Repair Station. Using the same recipe of hard work, we continued the grind and obtained our EASA certificate as well. This was a very stressful, but equally gratifying time for us.

A staple in the MRO industry, StandardAero has a long and storied past with recent growth and expansion throughout the world. Over the past century, StandardAero has made a name for itself as one of the aerospace industry’s largest independent MRO providers. The company is staffed by over 6,300 professional, administrative and technical employees in 38 major facilities across the globe. StandardAero has worked hard over the years to establish a name synonymous with quality, and for this reason, they are the recipient of our 2019 Top Shop Award for Best Engine Accessories Repair. In highlighting the quality work and recent growth of StandardAero, we need to look further than the expansion coupled with ribbon-cutting ceremonies at 4 different facilities. We wanted to look at the new facilities and highlight what this growth brings to the industry.

It’s been such a staple to air transportation for so long that it’s hard to believe there was a time when Jumbo Jets didn’t cover the skies. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the birth of the 747, and the inauguration of mass public transportation through the skies.

Boeing thought that the 747 would eventually be replaced by supersonic transport aircraft, which caused them to shift their focus on the design of the 747 to be modified as an aircraft for shipping freight when passenger numbers dropped. The 747 was designed to handle 2 standard shipping containers stacked 2 high and three deep.

It wasn’t all smooth sailing for the 747 after its arrival. Though its introduction initially caused problems for airports -- baggage systems were overwhelmed, taxiways were too narrow, and some ground equipment couldn’t reach the passenger doors – these problems were eventually solved. The release of the 747 also came at the same time as the fuel shortage of the early 1970s, but the 747 survived. Boeing estimated that half of the early 747 sales were to airlines desiring the aircraft’s long range rather than its payload capacity. The original 747 was designed to handle 300-400 passengers, but later versions like the 747-400 could handle 416 passengers in a typical three-class layout, 524 passengers in a typical two-class layout, or 660 passengers in a high–density one-class configuration. On one flight, during Operation Solomon in 1991, a 747 transported 1,089 Jews from Ethiopia to Israel during a mass exodus.
Here we are, 50 years later, and the 747 has seen just about everything there is to see. The 747 made it possible to transport people and cargo cheaper and over longer distances, it made possible the transport of the Space Shuttle on its back, and it flew the President of the United States around in safety and security since 1987. As a side note, there are two 747-8s ready to be converted to the newest Presidential Transport aircraft (Air Force One), to be ready in the next few years. By 2018, Boeing had built over 1,500 747s of all different types, but has been relegated to retirement in the past couple of years. In 2017, Delta became the last US airline to use a 747, with many foreign airlines slowly weaning out the 747 from their fleet. The 747 has served the world for half a century and during that time it obtained iconic status, depicted in media and movies the world over. As the 747 rides off into the sunset, let us remember a truly innovative aircraft that changed the world and made air travel a reality for countless millions of people across the planet.
