Wednesday, February 7th, 2024 1 p.m. MST, at the Ranch
We are happy to once again have EZ Ranching join us with a large group of excellent long yearling bulls; L-O Herefords, with rugged long yearling bulls and a group of open commercial heifers; and Lawview Herefords with fancy heifer calves.
60 Long Yearling Bulls – bred to be rugged and durable, these bulls sell semen tested and guaranteed. 30 Bred Registered Heifers – an excellent group of heifers, representing many of our present herdsires. 55 Bred Commercial Hereford Heifers – home raised and bred to light-birthweight Horned Hereford bulls. Open Registered & Commercial Heifer Calves
MVF 216F SUPER LAD 154K
BAR-OM 63B SUPER STD LAD 316K
154K has the same sire as the two feature bulls in our 2023 sale. He’s a rugged, correct bull with great thickness and depth of body. His dam is a top-producing Windimuir cow purchased at the Westgard dispersal.
316K is an extremely deep, thick bull with a great hair coat and fantastic disposition. His sire’s positive influence in our herd is becoming more and more apparent as we go forward. On the dam’s side, outstanding sires such as 46E, 656U, 604W and 219T appear in close generations.
FREE DELIVERY to central points in the Prairie provinces with special consideration given to group purchases. Give us a call and come and take a look at the sale cattle prior to sale day if possible.

Hereford horizons
H
appy New Year!
BY JUDY FINSETH Managing Editor
in the calving barn while waiting for a cow to calve, we are proud to share the latest Canadian Hereford news and present the exceptional offerings of our advertisers. Like all other businesses in this economic climate, we struggle to balance the price of the services we offer while providing good value to our membership. The Association took over the Canadian Hereford Digest in 2009 and since that time have never increased our advertising rates. The Board of Directors has authorized an increase in advertising rates effective March 2024. We are committed to providing additional value for our advertisers in conjunction with this rate increase. Contract advertisers will see additional social media posts as we expand the reach of their advertisements beyond the realm of print media. The Digest is an important part of the CHA’s communication strategy, but it is also a forum for our breeders to share what makes their breeding programs unique and advertise their genetics and special events. Facilitating sale transactions is what we do. Just as it is hard to identify what we don’t measure; it is hard to sell animals and frozen genetics without letting potential customers know
Hats off to all the volunteers that supported Hereford boards and events in 2023! These hardworking folks are the backbone of our many activities, and the long hours they put in keep the gate to the showring open, junior functions happening and the business of our provincial and national associations ticking. Volunteer jobs can seem a little thankless at times, so it is incumbent on all of us to express our gratitude to these important people that help behind the scenes. We all know how busy life is on any Hereford operation, yet our volunteer core takes time away from their own businesses to keep breed activities rolling and to steer the future course of our breed with an emphasis on youth, next generation breeders and our role in the commercial cattle industry. As CHA staff we are fortunate to have the support and encouragement a board of directors that provides us with guidance and sets the parameters for the many activities we undertake as staff. Their past commitment to the development of a breed strategy and their continued efforts to drive that process forward with increased engagement from breeders underpins many of our activities. HBI COMMITTEE REPORT
The Hereford Breed Improvement (HBI) committee is comprised of CHA Directors and members at large appointed by the CHA president. Its purpose to enhance the breed and its marketability through genetic improvement and performance evaluation programs.
Happy New Year to each of you and all the best for 2024. Good luck with your ongoing or upcoming calving season and the excitement of calves arriving from your mating decisions.
calculations to benefit the breed. The choice is up to each breeder, please simply be aware of the process and perceived benefits for your dollars invested.
The Hereford Breed Improvement (HBI) Committee is in a position to undertake new discussions and work, having completed several past conversations and action items. We gladly welcome feedback on what our group can address moving forward. It is valuable to hear constructive opinions on what tools and initiatives are either providing value, still need to be optimized or potentially have diminished in benefit. We would remind everyone that we can’t address concerns when they aren’t expressed to our committee or the board of directors.
A new initiative that we are close to completing is the formation of an elite cow recognition program. The recognition from this designation would be aimed at promoting dams of bulls going into seedstock or commercial herds that have proven productivity, longevity, fertility and maternal merit. Preliminary factors that would qualify cows to receive recognition are: 1) Initial calving age, 2) Age at second calving, 3) Average Calving Interval, 4) A measure of sex specific calf weaning performance, 5) Percentile ranking for Maternal Productivity Index (MPI) and Feedlot Merit Index (FMI), 6) Percentile ranking for Sustained Cow Fertility (SCF) and Udder/Teat Score. We are currently settling on the thresholds for these factors to ensure a sizeable, yet not overwhelming number of cows qualify. This would allow breeders to be recognized for and subsequently promote the superior cows in their programs, at least in the context of this program.
One existing initiative I want to discuss, similar to last year, is the carcass merit decision support tool. As you’re aware, it is a yearly summary of in-herd and across breed trends and values relative to carcass traits. In our industry engagement and strategic plan, continuing to enhance end product merit in Hereford cattle was clearly evident and necessary. As such, a strong emphasis has been placed on encouraging breeders to do just that. Elevating the lower percentiles of the breed for the traits of ribeye area, marbling and carcass weight is the objective to position the breed most favorably. The association isn’t forcing anyone to implement genetics or decisions they aren’t comfortable with, but we are strongly encouraging that it be a point of consideration in breeding objectives, in balance with many other traits, physical attributes and observations of maternal productivity. Altering criteria in choosing AI sires and/or natural sires is a common consideration for those that may pursue changes for end-product merit in their herds. Genomic testing is another consideration in trying to elevate accuracy of genetic values of those cattle being considered for selection within or outside herds. However, securing more trait information is imperative in not only defining differences in genetics, but bolstering accuracy and subsequently effectiveness of the EPD and genomic tools currently in place. Collecting actual carcass and/or ultrasound carcass data may be another consideration for those that justify the economic, labor, time and herd/breed improvement factors that contribute to such a choice. If choosing to move forward with ultrasound collection, explaining and clarifying the process is worth the space in this article to make it crystal clear. The Ultrasound Guidelines Council (UGC) recognizes three labs in the United States as qualifying to interpret images captured from UGC qualified technicians. However, of those three, only the Centralized Ultrasound Processing (CUP) lab currently has technicians in Canada. The standard and preferred protocol, from an association standpoint, is to: 1) Have technicians collect images on farm, along with weight/age/ pedigree/management information from a breeder barnsheet, 2) Digitally submit those images to the lab, 3) the Lab independently interpreting images, 4) the Lab sending interpreted results directly to breed association, 5) Breed association applying adjustments, 6) Breed association incorporating adjusted values in cattle evaluation for EPD calculation, 6) Breed association returning a report with actual and adjusted values to breeder, typically including rump fat, back fat, percent intrasmuscular fat and ribeye area. Contrast this with the alternative option that breeders may either choose or simply not be aware of participating in. ‘Chuteside’ interpretation also occurs, where the technician utilizes software on their personal computer to interpret collected ultrasound images and then return those images directly to the breeder. This method does not formally involve images being sent to the CUP lab or other labs for independent interpretation, while also preventing the data from being submitted to the breed association and incorporated in EPD The Canadian Hereford Digest 58
Ongoing discussions revolve around an elite sire recognition program, a member tool that simply describes percentage of cow weight weaned and how we can implement large scale trials to collect feed efficiency, end-product merit and performance data. The ability to articulate our breed strengths and substantiate such claims with pertinent data largely hinges on our ability to make such trials occur. Hereford, along with the Canadian Angus Association is currently waiting to see if funding will be successfully provided to undertake an intensive, large-scale collaboration that would focus on exactly those areas of interest. Nonetheless, ideas from the membership about large scale commercial operations that would be interested and capable of conducting progeny trials would certainly be welcome. On the horizon, preliminary conversations are ongoing regarding feedlot health, sustainability and gene editing. While these topics may be short of implementation, it is important to be aware of their potential impact or utility. Some of these ideas are polarizing and will require detailed discussion-so gauging the opinion of the membership will be critical. However, Hereford is potentially in a very favorable position to make positive contributions when it comes to sustainability, resource utilization and health of crossbreds late in the finishing phase. We appreciate the efforts of each All-Star breeder in collecting and submitting information to the extent your labor, infrastructure and profitability can support. Your contribution obviously assists you independently, but just as importantly bolsters the accuracy of selection across the breed. The Canadian Hereford Association provides a set of tools, trait projections and genomic testing opportunities that is as timely, comprehensive and high quality as any industry wide. It is the responsibility of each breeder, not the association-to determine if, how and to what extent those pieces are utilized. The decisions, effort and investments of breeders alone will ultimately determine how successfully Hereford continues evolving to capitalize on consumer, packer, feedlot and commercial necessities/criteria. One final note I will leave you with is the board recently chose to enable our online system to track genetic condition testing results and possibilities for transparency. This will reduce the effort expended by members to comprehensively evaluate their herds in the manner they see appropriate. As always, please reach out to us with your feedback, ideas and opportunities to move the breed ahead in any capacity. Regards, Lance Leachman
C H A AWA R D S & RECOGNITION COMMITTEE REPORT The Awards & Recognition Committee grew out of discussions on the Strategic Marketing Plan. The award program had not been reviewed for years and the CHA Board thought it would be prudent to review those awards currently in place. A Standing Committee of three Board members plus the Executive Director was created to complete the review and oversee the awards process. The aim is to revise and develop guidelines to ensure consistency in the application process and the criteria for the Awards. The Recognition Committee has, to this point, looked specifically at the current awards with the exception of Membership Pins. After several meetings and much discussion the Recognition Committee recommended the following awards: The CHA Honour Roll: may be awarded to current members or posthumously for outstanding achievement and service to those who have made significant contributions to the Hereford industry. The CHA Trailblazer Award: may be awarded to individuals or organizations who exemplify excellence and demonstrated innovation for the Hereford breed. (May or may not be members). The CHA NextGen Award: may be presented to an outstanding young cattle producer between the ages of 25-35 who has an entrepreneurial spirit and is dedicated to building a Hereford herd and agriculture business. These “new” awards have been approved in principle by the CHA Board with final approval to take place at the December Board Meeting. Details and forms will be available from the CHA office and/or on the website in early January. Janice Tapp
MARKETING COMMITTEE REPORT Welcome to the Marketing Committee report. The CHA board decided to rebrand the Show Committee into the Marketing Committee and also expand the scope of the duties of this committee. It will continue to be responsible for the MOE show program but also provide more oversight on Bonanza planning and breed marketing. There are exciting changes in the Mark of Excellence (MOE) Show program. 2024 will see Better Your Beef Hereford Show Female and Show Male of the Year awards. Regional titles, with both Eastern and Western Better Your Beef Hereford Show Female and Male will be awarded. Watch the CHA website early next year for all the details. Bonanza 2024 is taking shape. Mark your calendars to be in Brandon from July 23-27. For those that really like to plan ahead, Bonanza 2025 is in the early stages of planning and will take place in Alberta. In its new role, the committee will be keeping an eye on the Better Your Beef strategy. Future discussions will be held on creating a national perspective with regards to marketing and using this program across Canada. This committee is comprised of CHA director, Heather Ribey as the Chairperson, other CHA director representation, as well as the presidents and secretaries from the respective provincial associations. We are also open to adding other Hereford members with a keen interest in making sure Hereford Marketing is on the right track. If this is you, please reach out to Michael Latimer or Heather Ribey. Heather Ribey

CJHA President's Message BY MEGAN NICHOLAS President of the Canadian Junior Hereford Association
H
appy New Year! I hope everyone enjoyed the holidays and were able to spend time with friends and family.
The CJHA was busy working hard this past year on many projects and events. We had a great group of delegates representing each province. New in 2023, we had two members at large to help with British Columbia, as we did not have BC delegates. This was an excellent addition to the board and the extra hands made a huge difference. I would like to thank our outgoing delegates Daniel, Bobbi Jo, Miranda, and Molly, for all they have contributed to the association over the years. We will definitely miss you all on the board. Last year, we decided we needed to have more communication and input from the CHA. We introduced this to the board and we now have three CHA members that act as liaisons between the two associations. This has been very beneficial as we have worked to improve our current projects and start working on some new things. In the future, it will allow us to collaborate with the CHA and improve our youth programing.

The heifer lottery is an incredible opportunity for juniors to start their herds from reputable breeders all across Canada. We were also able to increase the number of semen donation bulls on offer this year.
As a board, we worked to improve our current yearly projects. We wanted to have more opportunities for juniors, whether it be an increased dollar amount for the Heifer Lottery or more selection of bulls through Semen Donation. This year we were able to award $10,000 to a number of junior members through the heifer lottery. The heifer lottery is an incredible opportunity for juniors to start their herds from reputable breeders all across Canada. We were also able to increase the number of semen donation bulls on offer this year. Any junior member can apply to get straws of semen through this program to use in their own herd. Our other major project is the calendar, where many breeders are able to advertise their cattle. The calendar also includes sale dates and events occurring throughout the year. These projects are such a great way to help youth kickstart their herds with high quality genetics. We couldn’t do it without all of the generous Hereford breeders participating in these projects. Thank you to all the breeders for your continued support of our junior program.
2024. You can park your vehicle and leave it there for the week, as the hotel is connected to the barns. There are endless activities and opportunities during the week of Bonanza. Make sure to enter in the Heifer Lottery and Semen Donation shows with your qualified cattle. This is an excellent way to share your success with the breeders participating in these projects. I look forward to seeing you all in Brandon!
I am very excited for the coming year as I know we have a great board with so many excellent ideas. We want to work to improve our program to promote even more junior activity. We want to work towards more educational programs for juniors and young adults. The Hereford breed is changing and evolving in tremendous ways. Providing more education and involvement for youth will ensure the breed has a bright future. I look forward to working closely with the delegates to create Bonanza will be held in Brandon, Manitoba from July 23-27, great youth programs for the years to come.

Executive Director's Report BY MICHAEL LATIMER Executive Director, Canadian Hereford Association

he fall run of 2023 was amazing! The commercial feeder calf market was at an all-time high. Herefords reigned Supreme at the Royal Winter Fair and Canadian Western Agribition. The market outlook is strong for beef cattle in 2024 and beyond. Consumers around the world are still choosing beef to feed their families daily as well as for special occasions. This is all great news for cattle producers as we head into a new year. There hasn’t been a major review to the CHA Fee Schedule for five years and upon review the board of directors
finding. It is important to note that genetic abnormalities are found in all breeds of cattle and the technology available allows breeders to identify genetic lines and breed around them without discarding large numbers of quality cattle, thus reducing the negative economic impact. A breed is stronger long term if genetic abnormalities are identified and removed from the population through a managed system. Genetic conditions are not new to the Hereford breed as they have been identified either officially or unofficially by breeders for decades. Hereford breeders are resilient and have always adapted to similar situations and the breed will continue to thrive. As with previous recessive genetic conditions, identified impacted animals will continually change so please monitor communications as new information comes available.
Our goal is to keep costs to members competitive within the industry but also to ensure that the services the CHA offers meets or exceeds expectations and to ensure we have resources available to achieve the goals outlined in the Better Your Beef strategy.
approved several changes to the fee schedule. The review resulted in both reductions and increases across several categories including registrations and memberships. Moving forward, the board committed to reviewing the schedule on an annual basis and to making incremental adjustments that reflect the reality of the industry, administration costs, value to members, and inflation. Our goal is to keep costs to members competitive within the industry but also to ensure that the services the CHA offers meets or exceeds expectations and to ensure we have resources available to achieve the goals outlined in the Better Your Beef strategy. In November we were informed of a new genetic condition in Hereford cattle, Delayed Blindness (DB). This condition has and will continue to impact many Hereford cattle and breeding programs across Canada. Genetic abnormalities cause significant challenges for breeders and is not something breed associations take lightly or look forward to The Canadian Hereford Digest 80
The CHA continues to focus on achieving the goals outlined in the Better Your Beef strategy. ‘Must Win Battle 2’ states that Hereford be a maternal ingredient for productive crossbreeding programs. Through collaboration and cooperation with industry partners we can add value to Hereford cattle through opportunities that we couldn’t do alone. This includes aligning with other breed associations, service providers and others. We are developing a Hereford Baldy program focused on the commercial cattle sector that will use genomic technology to assist in the development and selection of high-quality Hereford-cross commercial heifers. This is in preparation for the rebuilding of the Canadian beef herd that is anticipated in the next year or so. This is an exciting program where we will see true collaboration in action across the beef industry. I look forward to attending as many sales and events as possible through the spring and visiting with cattle producers. As always, feel welcome to contact me the CHA office.

all came and went with much of the province still suffering from drought conditions. Lots of good Hereford cows and calves were sent to town to trim down herds so as to maintain the best of the breeding stock over the winter given the lack of hay and high price of purchasing feed. The West Coast Hereford Club held a very successful pen show in mid September with a good turnout of cattle, breeders and spectators. Stan Friesen, Abbotsford, was the judge. Stan’s folks were long time breeders of J Bar M Herefords. Stan and his siblings all went through the Canadian Junior Hereford program. Thank you to all of our southern members who organized and participated in the show and social afterwards. Grand Champion Female was shown by the Kirtons of Abbotsford. 3DL Gracie 4J sired by MCM 6964652D. Grand Champion Bull was exhibited by the Reimers of McLennan Creek Herefords, Abbotsford. Their bull calf MCH H244 Hodgeman 31L was Friesen’s choice of the bulls. This calf is out of a SHF Hodgeman F158 H244 which Nathan Reimer owns in partnership with Golden-Oak Livestock and AXA Farms. Reserve Champion Female also came from McLennan Creek Herefords - MCH 413D Sally 7G. This mature cow is a daughter of CBB Shar-Lo 9500 Outlier 413D.

ositivity, enthusiasm and momentum are what come to my mind when I think of the Hereford breed and their place in the cattle industry as of late, what an exciting fall we have had with Hereford cattle being noticed and sought after not only on the show circuit but in the sale barns all across Canada and worldwide. We are seeing increased demand and increased dollar averages for top quality Hereford bulls at these recent November and December sales.
This is the time we have been waiting for, commercial cattlemen are recognizing the power of cross breeding with our cattle.
This is the time we have been waiting for, commercial cattlemen are recognizing the power of cross breeding with our cattle. They are seeing that the neighbour pocketed an EXTRA FEW HUNDRED DOLLARS PER CALF because his weaning weights were up significantly after introducing Hereford genetics and they are seeing how their neighbour was able to get a PREMIUM for baldy heifers sold as replacements instead of accepting huge discounts on heifer calves. Cattlemen and Women are seeing this is how you BETTER YOUR BEEF. I have had the privilege of attending three outstanding events this fall starting with the Alberta Hereford Showcase, held at Westerner Park in Red Deer, Alberta. Participation was exceptional and the quality of cattle was impressive. Newly combined this year was the Best in the West Bull Sale, which was a phenomenal success, there was huge attendance and an outstanding demand for practical ranch type bulls. Nearly 300 people attended our sold out banquet which included an eye-opening, very knowledgable and entertaining guest speaker (Dr Kee Jim) and a female/ genetics sale, that once again was very well supported.
FarmFair International was inspiring to say the least, a good number of Hereford cattle displayed, and I was very happy to see the large number of national and international guests in attendance.
Canadian Western Agribition was a time to remember, thousands of people in attendance from all over the world, shoulder to shoulder by noon each day in the barns. Very exciting times! Hereford cattle most certainly left their mark, I was blown away by the quality and the number of Hereford cattle on display. They were the talk of the barn and rightfully so. Plenty of white faces made the final 10 both on the female side as well as bulls. The week couldn’t have ended better than it did, a truly outstanding Hereford bull was named National Supreme Champion over all other breeds! All of this makes me extremely optimistic as we head into full swing bull sale season. Hang on folks, I believe we are at the beginning of something very very good. Best regards

hat a busy fall it has been! We seen some exceptional female production sales across Saskatchewan in October and many Herefords found success along the fall show run. The Saskatchewan Hereford Association brought back the Red Coat Raffle fundraiser this year at Canadian Western Agribition with a $5000 Grand Prize Sale Credit to be used at any Hereford sale in Canada in the coming year. 25 Hereford Breeders across the country also generously donated secondary $1000 sale credits to the raffle. Nearly $12,000 worth of tickets were sold, with Chloe Wagner being the Grand Prize winner. The SHA would like to thank all of those who donated sale credits and purchased tickets supporting the raffle. Funds raised will go towards our Scholarship fund and a few new programs the SHA has in the works to be announced in 2024. New this year we hosted the Red Coat Reception at the Atlas Hotel. This supper was for any Hereford association members, exhibitors and their crews that were in town for CWA and wanted to come for low key evening with supper and drinks. The ball room was full and lots of networking and fun was had by all. We hope to keep this event going annually. We would like to thank our meal and silent auction sponsors that helped us get the event rolling, as well as the Atlas Hotel for being excellent hosts and providing a great meal. The Hereford show overall had a strong turnout. Judges Trent and Garrett Liebreich of Radville, SK did an excellent job sorting the cattle. In our Horned Hereford Female show Grand Champion Horned Female was awarded to Harvie Ranching, Olds AB with Harvie VLE Riesling ET81L. Reserve Champion Horned Female was CCR 1326 Libby 36K exhibited by Rocking G Land and Cattle, Gull Lake SK.
