BRAND RESEARC H

01 R E S E A R C H

We were tasked to create a lighting or time-keeping device under a specific brand. Through research of the brand’s history, products, and design philosophy, we decided on what we wanted create. Ultimately, I chose to design a lighting device for the brand OXO.

PHILOSOPHY Over the years OXO has been dedicated to Human Centered Design. Extensive research and design iterations have raised the bar within its products. One of the best examples of these ideals is OXO’s potato peeler.

ST YLE & FORM OXO is known for its organic and modern forms that add to their products ergonomic aspects. The brand is know infamously for their black, white, and red color scheme. However, OXO has incorporated some other colors into their products as well.

TASK ANALYSIS

When investigating the brand, we analyzed first hand how users interacted with current products OXO had on the market. Picutred below is a user interacting with the brands various peelers. It was interesting to see how the user gripped the product, because of the different handle size.

“

The grip gives me more control Have been on a hunt for products that will help lessen the amount of hand pain I suffer from especially with everyday tasks Peels well but clunky Too lightweight - Amazon User Reviews

USER: Lucas Shoemaker BACKGROUND: President of McCalls Catering & Events ENVIRONMENT: Commercial

USER: Paulina Espinoza BACKGROUND: Restaurant Manager & Mother ENVIRONMENT: Commercial & Non Commercial

USER: Revital Meron BACKGROUND: Architect & Mother of Two ENVIRONMENT: Non Commercial

Good Grips design makes it hard to clean ribbed areas Plastic breaks very easily Only OXO items used are the peeler and storage cleaners

Mostly metal handles are used within the restaurant More durable for commercial use At home OXO products

Uses storage containers, peelers and measuring cups Geometric simple shapes make it easy to store Prefers cheaper tupperware over OXO tupperware

PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT

F I ELD R E S E A RC H

Before I sketched and made models, I did field research to explore two different paths. First, I bought various OXO products to observe their look and feel.

Secondly, I spoke to eletricians with carpal tunnel about the different types of flashlights they use. Additionally, I discussed the pros and cons of the lights they used.

I went out and bought various types of light ranging from glowsticks to an actual flashlight. In doing so, I learned first hand about the strength of ambient and direct lighting.

ELECTRICIAN + LIGHT

In this early stage of ideation, I tried to encorporate what I observed from my field research with the electricians. I explored more ergonomic forms based off how the electricans held their own personal flashlights.

ELECTRICIAN + LIGHT

In these sketches, I was exploring more details within my lights focusing on additional components. As a result, I included aspects such as the OXO Good Grips and bendable wires to easily move light.

NEW ROLE + NEW FORM

Through my sketches and models I further explored these paths. One being ideas for a lighting device for electricians with carpal tunnel. Below is my exploration for the second path being a lighting device that is more visible and readily available to use within a home environment.

NEW ROLE + NEW FORM

These concept sketches are an exploration on how I could incorporate direct and ambient lighting in a way that would complement the form. I added details such as LED strips and twist top options.

After further exploration through foam iterations, I needed to reinforce the

USER + PROCESS

ergonomic aspect of my design. I made models to focus on ergonomics, details, and final form. Then I gathered a group of users to test these concepts.

After user testing, I decided on my final direction. Then I refined the details of my form more such as the charging station radiused corners.

My product would include wireless charging capabilities. I made

concepts for various types of wireless charges that would complement the product. Some details include a charger held by OXO suction cups, an outlet plug-in, and one that included a cord.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

I made a mold in Solidworks and 3D printed it. Then I sanded and prepared the mold.

I glued nuts on the top of the mold to create registration marks. Additionaly, I added walls around so that the silicone would not spill over the sides

Once I had both halves of my mold pieces I made multiple samples to test how I would create the silicone halves.

CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

After these test, the halves were not coming all that well, so I decieded not to make a “skin type piece.

I mixed silicone, poured it into my mold, and let it set.

Once I had both halves of my mold pieces I glued them together with an acrylic sheet in the center.
