PROLOGUE
What is Architecture for? - People Architecture exists because of people, and people must get involved in architecture. They are interdependent relationships. Both architecture and people are independent and self-contained as well, so we call them both self-reliance. People and architecture are the results of respecting the individual and its aesthetic value after the general harmony. For the humanity, it is an indispensable soul display in architecture or in various design fields. The future of architecture must be an interconnected and interdependent society which pursuing its own understanding of aesthetic.

01 DEARBORN CITY HALL UMich_ARCH 552 Design Studio - Accessing Dearborn, a City Hall of Tomorrow Instructor: Tsz Yan Ng Site: Dearborn, Michigan, US Individual Work * 2019 Taubuman College Student Show
Beyond the historical model of city hall as an edifice to demonstrate authoritative power, city halls today as civic institutions demand access. This comes in many forms, and in this case the access to food becomes one of the solutions. With today’s information technology, where one can deal with most municipal transactions electronically, there is a pressing question as to the status or role that City Hall s plays to both anchor administrative services as well as be the physical landmark in the age of digital technology. By the accessing to the variety kinds of food services,it will bring people together and reinscribe the necessity of City Halls as civic institutions.

02 MONDRIAN FOREST UMich_ARCH 672 Design Studio - innovative and future oriented medium density Instructor: Mick Kennedy, Kit McCullough Site: Detroit, Michigan, US Group Project: Yijia Liu, Yubei Song
Nowadays, architects can use a variety of mechanical methods to control the climate environment in the buildings they design. Therefore, it has become a general trend to rely entirely on engineers and their equipment to obtain comfortable climatic conditions in building spaces. However, it seems to have undesired side effects: Not only does the initial cost of the building increased significantly, but the smooth operation of man-made systems also requires regular and expensive maintenance. While it is impossible for architects to reject what modern technology can bring a comfortable dwelling place, we as architects, should think about how to make human survive, adapt, get used to and even appreciate the environment they live in through the design itself. Also when modern cities have gradually lost their “roughness”, human life has been completely covered by science and technology, everything has become smooth and regular, individuals have been drowned out by larger urban narratives, and life with temperature is disappearing. Where is the boundary between people? How can life be presented? So our thesis focuses on how the design of architecture can tackle the natural phenomenon and create a living community with focus on residents’ everyday life and their relationships.

Mondrian Forest Floor Plan
Site in east of the Dequindre Cut entry and the Eastern Market
Between Chene and Dubois Street, overlooking Gratiot Ave.
Design for living, working, and the communities and urban context.
Inspired by Mondrian, we applied the site to a natural subject the principles of cubist composition that is in the process of assimilating and working out in a partucular way.The site is divided into six small clusters, within each cluster, there's a community kitchen, two shared bathroom and a couple incremental housing. Each cluster is connected with catwalk on second and third floor in order to in crease interaction between the residential areas.
MONDRIAN FOREST
14
Unit Typology
The residential housing unit is incremental housing type. Houses will continue to change with the changes of family structure, city and society. The traditional big family life model has gradually been replaced by small families. Families made up of three or less members have become the majority, and even one-person homes have increasingly appeared. 15
Social Agenda
The type of residence originally designed for the extended family model is no longer suitable for the status quo or future development. We want to extend the concept of home and life to various spaces in the city by building a shared community to meet the needs of people in the city at this stage and in the future.

Unlike the sharing economy,
shared communities are not necessarily cheap or convenient. Its value lies in forming a new family model belonging to this era, providing people with more possibilities for new relationships. Even if there is no blood relationship or marriage relationship, people can share life in it. Through this design, the individual’s home is no longer closed, and people are liberated from their private living spaces, so that people and people can meet here.
21
We use three main Materials:
Bricks, Wood and Polycarbonate. Our wall system is also based on different materials: Thickest walls are double bricks with insulations and radiation pipes in it It is about 16 inches thick. These walls are located near Kitchen and Bathrooms. The other kind of brick wall is the one without radiation pipes in it. It’s about 12 inches thick. The wood walls are mainly for residential area. it is about 6 inches thick with finishes inside. And thepolycarbonate is used for temporary and incremental walls. It is about 3 1/8 thick.

STRUCTURE OF MONDRIAN FOREST Residential structure system is column and beam system which based on a grid system, we use the cross steel column for its aesthetic. The canopy in Mondrian Forest is separated from residential part, serves as shading and water collection system. There’re three kinds of panels in canopy to make full use of sunlight: solar panel, glass panel and just grid. While structed by the other two kinds of column, the canopy system allow direct sunlight in winter, cast shadow in summer and collect rainwater without affecting the shade. 23

ONE DAY IN MONDRIAN FOREST When the virtual network is infinitely involved in human daily life through the thrust of the era, whether the city should still be designed according to functionalism is a question that needs to be considered. Architecture or urban space does not need to assume specific functions in the future, it should exist as a carrier of people's life memories. Although digital technology can facilitate human life, people still belong to the real world, and virtual is just a way and service. In the future, buildings should become shared spaces that retain memories and temperature, and reconnect individualized people in the city. MONDRIAN FOREST

The latest trend “surban” denotes the sweet spot between city living and suburban space that millennials and young families are migrating to. A surban neighborhood typically provides the most sought after features and facilities from both urban and suburban living. The site downtown Champaign is the heart of a lively entertainment scene with restaurants and pubs, a full service hotel, parks, outdoor cafes and much more. With a blend of old and new, the district has quickly emerged as a favorite destination shoppers and diners. The majority of people will opt to rent instead of own homes, ramping up the demand for single-family rentals. Contradictory to the redevelopment of urban downtowns, the suburbs will bring at least 80 percent of the oncoming wave of new households as younger families seek urban facilities combined with more child friendly housing and strong education offerings typically associated with the suburbs. Surban areas were previously referred to as “mixed-use” developments and are the hot topic amongst the real estate trend predictors. So the dowtown Champaign project invovle the urban palnning of exploring the city’s surban factors on their own, such as the presence of summer festivals, concerts and street festivals. While also provides the dowtown with includes three buildings: boutique hotel, farmer’s market and apartment, each in different use. Seperated but also connect to each other in a way that can improve diversity of the city blocks .

Suburban land is becoming increasingly scarce, and rural land is being pushed to inaccessible distances. Meanwhile, it’s more attractive than ever to live and work in the city, and less desirable to be stuck in traffic. One of the most successful solutions that we’re seeing in the built environment is urban infill. Apartment Y is an urban infill apartment near the campus and since young people are about to overtake Baby Boomers as the largest adult generation, it’s essential to consider what apartment features this particular demographic is looking for. When it comes to enticing younger renters, there are two categories of apartment features need to consider: individual amenities and communal amenities. For examples: modern appliances, fast wi-fi, plenty of storage, in-unit washer and dryers, smart home tech, pet-friendly, commercial parcel lockers and so on. Apartment Y is aim for the young people group and is designed to distinguish from other apartment complexes.

06 TRINITY FURNITURE COLLECTION UMich_ARCH 562 Design Studio - Accessing Dearborn, a City Hall of Tomorrow Instructor: Mick Kennedy Individual Work
This studio proposes that the design and fabrication of furnitures may serve as a fertile arena for the exploration and clarification of ideas pursuant to larger and more integrated architectures. The trinity furniture involve the a series of design fabrication projects that provided the collective setting for large Dinner Party at semester’s end. The design of each furnitrue engaged a different set of material and fabrication processes and the integration of a range of levels of craft. The parameters given for the design of each object roots the work in the artifact itself and also in the relational thinking in regards to larger architectural questions surfaces, joints, tectonics, form and space. And equally important: their use both singularly and in combination.

Communal Restaurant Project: Eat With Your Eyes The collection of furniture that is designed and fabricated in the studio provides the setting and a sequence of guests to sit discuss the work and related topics and enjoy a decent meal. The assemble sets of studio projects will form a Communal Restaurant where spatial and visual relationships between the projects are carefully calibrated by the design and location of a set of windows. Rather than a typical end-of-semester review we hosted our inaugural Pranzo di Ferraprile The studio proposes that such a space of the body, of conversation and the sharing of food comprises a fundamental location of our humanness and is an essential ambition of architecture. The communal activities of preparing food, presenting it to another and joining in discussion about our world is an equally essential component of our social lives and a primary responsibility of the architect to design.

07 THE WILD PEAR GARDEN UIA-CBC International College Construction Competition Type: Urban Design, Cultural Facility Group Project: Central South University *Honored with Third Prize
The 2019 UIA-CBC International College Construction Competition was held by the International Institute of Architects (UIA) as the international organizer. The competition was titled “Liyuan Hut”, and the public space of the village was updated through design to improve the quality of life of the villagers and shape the attractiveness of the village. Central South University and University of Michigan’s “Wild Pear” plan combines local cultural features to increase the fun of the tour and improve the working environment of the villagers. By design, the fire consciousness of fruit forests, villages and villagers will be activated, and the works will be better integrated into the forest.
THE WILD PEAR GARDEN
64
Conceptual idea
The site is located in a fruit forest, and the building has been erected to not only cut down the fruit trees of the fruit farmer, but also destroy the local landscape. “Spread in the fruit forest at different scales, as if the fruit fell into the orchard. The image of the installation must not simply imitate the creation of the image of the pear. We weighed from the tetrahedron to the sphere according to the geometry of the pear, and finally chose the regular tetrahedron as our basic image.
Working in the local woodshop with group
65
Structural design
The regular tetradecahedron has two types of faces, a square face and an equilateral triangular face.Wild pear can adjust its shape through different combinations of unit cells and the mobility of the surface according to the different use scenarios. Each unit can be given different patterns, which gives us a lot of artistic creation space.

Baihua Office Building 2018 Summer Internship in Tianhua Building type: High-rise Bilding Role in Team: Concept Design, Redndering, Revit Documentation, Physical Model 2D Drawing Site: Shenzhen, China
We hope that this project can become a link between the districts and create a micro circulation activity system within the block. In terms of space shaping, the pedestrian walkway is built into the core space of the building. It is extended in two dimensions, horizontal and vertical, from the ground to the refuge level sky garden, and a variety of shared office spaces are implanted in the passage. Encourage new vitality into the interior of the tower, forming a three-dimensional, diverse, and rich public space system. In terms of internal functions, the new office model that emphasizes sharing requires breaking the boundaries between people, allowing people to meet more conveniently, and promoting collaboration between various departments. The ambiguity of functional boundaries such as office area, discussion area, and rest area will inevitably stimulate more possibilities for activities and stimulate creativity of thinking.

Shenzhen Longgang Library 2016 Summer Internship in CCDI Building type: Mixed use Role in Team: Detail Drawing, 3D Modeling, Interior Design Site: Shenzhen, China The self-closing public flow line becomes a novel space rule and it becomes an important venue for public activities in the evening. The small square, as an additional space for the architectural theme, can promote and inspire the interaction between citizens. Improvised and spontaneous various civic activities fill the entire block with free breathing, and also show the most precious spirit of autonomy in the city of Shenzhen.
72
PHOTOGRAPHY
Tadao Ando once said that “light gives beauty a dramatic feeling, and wind and rain add color to life through their effects on the human body. “Architecture is a medium that enables people to feel the existence of nature. And architectural photography teaches people how to open buildings in different ways. When shooting, the light and shadow in the early stage are the main factors, and later the interference of the color on the lines is removed, and the architectural sense of the building is enhanced with black and white.
73
CALIGRAPHY
Start practice since six, I believe Chinese calligraphy is a unique art in Chinese traditional culture, and it contains the essence of Chinese culture with its unique expression. Undoubtedly, in the long time of its development, Chinese traditional calligraphy has evolved into an art form with high cultural taste and cultural personality. From content to form to spiritual level, there are common factors with modern architectural design, and they can give architectural design guidance and reference in many aspects.
