T
his quote by late South African president Nelson Mandela could refer to the 37 standout students featured in this firstever Central Kansas Academic All-Stars publication provided by the Chapman & Enterprise News-Times, the Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter, the Lincoln SentinelRepublican, and the Marquette Tribune newspapers. The four papers partnered to recognize the top three graduating seniors from 11 different high schools in their coverage area and many of the students are profiled in the pages that follow. Three of the schools recognized ties in class rank, resulting in 37 total All-Stars from the following school districts: Central Plains, Chapman, Ell-Saline, Ellsworth, Lincoln,
Chapman superintendent Lacee Sell talks at the 2014 Central Kansas All-Academic banquet.
Little River-Windom, Smoky Valley, Southeast of Saline, Sylvan-Lucas, Tescott, and Wilson. “We are proud to provide this keepsake edition honoring the top students in our combined coverage area,” Ellsworth County Independent-Reporter publisher Linda MoweryDenning said. “The young people in our rural school districts are so talented and they deserve
to be honored for their efforts in the classroom.” The publication includes coverage of the first-ever Central Kansas Academic AllStar Banquet, hosted by USD #473 schools at the beautifully rebuilt Chapman High School building March 24, with profiles for each of the students who returned data forms by deadline. The profiles provide a closer
look at their academic achievements, their aspirations, and their future plans. Around 50 people, including 13 of this year’s All-Stars, their parents and several school administrators attended the banquet with a meal provided by Opaa! Food Management, the food service provider for USD #473. “Chapman has rebuilt their schools into a shining example of what can be done when a community is committed to providing an excellent education for its youth,” Chapman News-Times and Lincoln Sentinel publisher John Baetz noted. “Chapman used the devastating tornado of 2008 as a unifying event and the Chapman school system is leading a resurgence for a once shrinking small town. We are so thankful to Superintendent Lacee Sell and USD #473 for hosting this event and providing such a wonderful meal.”

I would offer one piece of advice to underclassmen, and that is never sell yourself short. If you think you can’t do something, do it anyway. You might surprise yourself. Many people don’t like high school, and do their best to rush through it because the rest of their life is going to be so much better. I, however, hold a different view. I’m here right now. There’s nothing I can do to change that fact, so I’m going to enjoy my time here. When I move on, I’ll be there, and there will be nothing I can do to change that fact, either, so I’ll enjoy my time there, once I arrive (One note. “Enjoy” does NOT mean parties, illegal substances, or socializing every spare second of your life. It simply means being content with where you’re at). Dakota Caldwell

My favorite high school memories are the Suburban rides with the tennis team. I want all starting high school to know that any grade or achievement is obtainable. All that is required is effort. Use high school for what it is worth: preparing, enriching, enjoying. It is my goal to solve one of the great problems of our world. Adrain Fink My favorite memories are from FFA events. My best friends and I did floriculture and dairy judging and we had a lot of fun. My advice to underclassmen — Stay on top of your work, pay attention and get work done. It seems these days too many kids just try to get by with the lowest grade possible yet still pass or at least please their parents. Many are also content with letting others take charge or do the work but yet still feel that they are entitled to something. My favorite high school memories will always be the life-long connections and friendships I’ve made. If you’re starting high school, don’t feel like you need to figure out the rest of your life now. There are plenty of excellent people in college and beyond that don’t know what they want to do. School is a necesary part of your life, you might as well enjoy it. Garrett Schuman My favorite high school memory comes from the 3-2-1A state wrestling tournament my sophomore year (2012). Going in as a complete underdog, I ended up winning three matches in a row and taking second place. So to underclassmen, I would emphasize working hard to accomplish your dreams. Currently, I am somewhat dismissive about graduating from high school, hesitant to leave the routine and comforts ... I am, though, excited for the future and the opportunities that lie ahead. My favorite high school memory was my calculus class because my classmates and teacher were hilarious and our conversations were deep ... My advice to an underclassman is to do anything you need to do in order to graduate, do not procrastinate and keep your future goals in mind. My philosophy towards school is to always stay ahead. Leah Schneider My favorite high school memories are from sports: football, basketball and baseball. Being involved in sports is a lot of hard work, but it is also fun and rewarding. I would encourage underclassmen to get involved in activities. I believe that school is a very important part of our society. We need school to learn about the world outside of adolescence. It is also important because it teaches the future generations how to leave their unique mark on the world by finding out what their passions are and pursuing them. I believe that school is the most important gateway into adulthood. Sawyer Pittenger
I do think that everyone has a talent and we should all find out how to use our talents. My favorite memory from high school without a doubt is the canoeing trip I took with six friends last March to Arkansas. Our trailer broke down 50 miles from our destination and we camped and canoed for three days on a river that was 200 feet from where we broke down. it didn’t take long for the story to get back home and I still get asked about it. Etc. To students that are about to go into high school, all I can say is “get ‘er done.” If you start out strong, it will push you to continue that success all throughout high school. That statement is my philosphy to high school as well. That motivation to get things accomplished has developed my appreciation for learning and shown me what subjects I like and dislike. Taylor Green I have many memories when it comes to high school, but I can’t say that one of them is my favorite. They were all enjoyable. From winning track meets to Scholar’s Bowl meets or just being in class with my friends, everything about high school was enjoyable and memorable, and that is exactly what I would tell incoming freshmen. I would tell them to enjoy every moment, because it goes by quickly. Brett Nurnberg

My favorite high school memory would be a tough pick. I have a lot of great memories at Tescott High School. I honestly couldn’t pick just one. Etc. My favorite high school memory would have to be the moment our school counselor, Val, came into our freshman class homeroom. She gave us a talk about how important these next four years will be and if you just mess around and wait till your senior year to get your butt in gear it will be too late. Before high school, I never really cared about school at all, but after that talk Val had, it changed my attitude toward school. The talk made me realize that I am going to need to go to college to secure my future. My advice to underclassman who are about to go into high school would be the same advice Val gave me. I would also suggest being involved with anything and everything. Being lazy may help you today, but in the future you’re going to wish you had done more. Makayla Webb

When I think of my high school years, I think of a time where I really grew up and matured. My favorite memory of high school would be just being around such great people. My advice to underclassmen is to try as many new things as you can; you don’t want to graduate high school with regrets! I believe school is a route to not only learn the facts and answers of a book, but also to learn about yourself and find out what your own interests are. Benjamin Stutterheim
