Kansas Mat Preview, Volume 5

Join the KWCA, today!

The following letter is from Manhattan wrestling coach Robert Gonzales, the president of the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association (KWCA). The KWCA continues to be a key partner in developing Kansas Mat Preview and we encourage all coaches across the Sunflower State to join this great organization.

Dear Kansas wrestling coaches and KWCA members, Thanks to all of those who recently attended the 2013 KWCA Fall Coaches Clinic in Salina. The weekend was another great success. We had 150 coaches in attendance for the clinic and many coaches who became members of the KWCA. Assistant Coach Zach Esposito of Oklahoma State University was excellent on the mat both days of the event. Esposito was able to provide a depth of technique skills that were enhanced by youth, middle school, and high school coaching staffs in attendance. Coach Pete DiPol of Baker University was an excellent clinician that brought a wealth of information and technique to our Kansas Coaches on Friday night’s session. A featured session with Joe Knecht on the use of Track Wrestling was well attended and provided much needed information to the KWCA. We had a panel of our own Kansas Coaches who provided feedback on the split in the 4A classification and the panel shared information. On Saturday, we honored coaches, athletes, media, contributors and administrators that have made a difference in the sport of wrestling in Kansas. Coach Bob Warkentine of Salina was inducted into the KWCA Hall of Fame for his success as both a coach and official, and for his impact on so many student-athletes during his coaching career. Official Jim Ramirez of Arkansas City was also inducted in the KWCA Hall of Fame. Jim was a high school and college wrestling referee. Congratulations Coach Bob Warkentine and Referee Jim Ramirez. It certainly was a memorable weekend in celebration of Kansas wrestling and a great way to kick off the 2013-2014 wrestling season. If you were unable to attend the fall clinic; high school, middle school and kid club coaches are still encouraged to join the KWCA for the 20132014 season. The KWCA will be giving a middle school coach of the year award and also award four kids club coach of the year awards. To be eligible for these awards or to nominate for awards, coaches must be a member of the KWCA by Monday February 3, 2014. A registration form may be found on the KWCA home page along with instructions on how to purchase a clinic DVD. Being a member of the KWCA is a great way to help continue to make the great sport of wrestling stronger in the state of Kansas. The KWCA plans the Senior Classic Dual, coordinates rankings, awards an All-Academic team, gives out post-season awards, and honors coaches, athletes, officials, contributors, media, and inducts Hall of Fame nominees each year. Each year the KWCA gives $4,000-$6,000 in scholarship money to the college wrestling programs in Kansas. For more information contact me at robertgo@usd383.org or the following High School reps. 6A – Kale Mann, Blue Valley 5A – Dennis Charbonneau, Emporia 4A – Brandon Jobe, Bonner Springs 321A –Billy Johnson, Norton The class reps will also be coordinating the Senior Wrestler and Coach of the Year awards at the State tournaments and will be nominating wrestlers for the Senior Classic All-Star dual. Please assist them with this process. Thanks for supporting the KWCA and best of luck this season! Regards, Robert M. Gonzales

We are proud to offer coverage of nearly 90 high school wrestling programs in the state of Kansas with coverage of returning wrestlers and a look at the teams’ prospects for the 2013-14 season. We are trying something a bit different this year, not publishing the magazine until after the Christmas break in hopes of providing a more accurate publication. Please e-mail feedback to publisher johnbaetz@gmail.com so we can determine if we should continue with this format. Wrestling is a family sport where athletes from youth all the way to the college level travel this great state in search of success on the mat. Holton, Andale contenders for 4A title

 by Melanie McGee For Kansas Mat Preview

The 2014 portion of the season begins with a familiar name atop the Class 4A team rankings. Defending state champion Holton has six ranked individuals, including senior heavyweight Cooper Zeller, ranked second in his weight class. Senior Andrew Rieschick, juniors Mason Baum and Lucas Lovvorn and sophomores Jonah Lutz and Justin Rieschick are also ranked for the Wildcats. “This year’s team is highly experienced and upperclassmen heavy,” said coach Cullen Jackson. “This year’s seniors are an outstanding group of workers. Their focus should help lead the way for our younger wrestlers.” Lovvorn, Lutz, Justin Rieschick and Zeller all earned state medals a year ago and will be expected to lead the Wildcats’ title defense. Second-ranked Andale is coming off a third-place finish at last year’s state meet. Senior Tyler Mies (138) and freshmen Anthony Capul (195)

and Zack Eck (113) are all ranked first in their classes for the Indians. “We are returning several guys that have been varsity wrestlers for a few years but have not been able to qualify for state,” coach Brad Lies said. “We have a large group of talented freshmen that have state experience at the kids club level that we will be relying on as well as transfer Bryce Garcia, who went 2-2 at 5A state last year.” Mies, who went 36-5 and won a regional championship, was Andale’s only state placer last season. With six ranked wrestlers as of Dec. 12, Chanute is looking to improve on last year’s ninth-place team finish. The third-ranked Blue Comets will lean on top-ranked Adam Cole (132-pound junior) and third-ranked heavyweight Jordan Drybread in addition to fourth-ranked Chase Cole (138), fifth-ranked Alex Son (170) and sixth-ranked Nick Ornelas (113) and Brady Vogel (145). Fourth-ranked Prairie View and fifth-ranked Fort Scott each have

three individuals ranked in the Dec. 12 KWCA poll. Prairie View senior Kaleb Konitzer is atop the 145-pound rankings while Fort Scott senior Jacob Durossett tops the 152-pound poll. Prairie View finished fifth a year ago while Fort Scott’s Tigers are aiming to improve on an eighth-place finish. Prairie View’s Case Pemberton is ranked fourth at 113 while junior teammate William Holland sits fourth in the 152-pound rankings. For Fort Scott, senior Jerad Heckman starts 2014 ranked third at 126 and 160-pound senior John Hughes is ranked sixth in his class. Abilene, Goodland, Sumner Academy, Mulvane and Scott City round out the top 10 teams in the Dec. 12 poll. No. 6 Abilene has second-ranked Logan McDowell at 106 pounds and third-ranked 113-pounder Zane Baugh leading the way. Senior Colton Cooper, ranked first at 182 pounds, and senior John Peden, ranked second at 160, are No. 7 Goodland’s top wrestlers.

Page 3

Sumner’s Donte Boose (fifth at 126), Emmanuel Brown (third at 106) and Kossivi Esse (ranked second at 145) lead the No. 8 Sabres into 2014. No. 9 Mulvane has four ranked individuals, while No. 10 Scott City has the top-ranked 126-pounder in James Jurgens and thirdranked 170-pounder Warren Kropp. Several weight classes are shaping up to be very competitive in February as athletes look to end their high school careers on the medals stand. The top six wrestlers in the 182-pound poll are all seniors, and five of the top six at 120 pounds are also seniors. At 220 pounds, the top four wrestlers are seniors and five of the top six at both 170 and 285 will graduate in May. A comprehensive website dedicated to wrestling in Kansas

The Bluejays return five wrestlers who won state medals last season, including senior Alec Hager, who has won two. Campbell and Hager were state runner-ups last year. However, state champion John Risewick graduated and Norton doesn’t return a state champion. “Over 30 athletes have showed up to start the season,” Johnson Photo by Everett Royer said. “These numbers will give the Bluejays much depth and competition for the 14 varsity spots. Before Christmas break kids will be trying to find their spot on the team. As always, we may not get everyone at their state weights until second Semester. ANDOVER TROJANS

The Cowboys will open 2014 as the sixthranked team in Class 4A, thanks in part to returning state qualifiers Zane Baugh and Logan McDowell.

The Chargers season opened with two wrestlers placing in the top four at the Mission Valley Invitational December 7 to finish 14th of 15 teams.

Third-place state medalist Tyler Mies headlines the Andale roster this year, and the Indians have a total of seven varsity starters back in the lineup.

Andover has two state qualifiers back in the lineup for the 2013-14 season, and the Trojans will also get a boost from a strong freshman class.

Baugh, a junior with two third-place medals already, is ranked third at 113 pounds after compiling a 34-8 record as a sophomore. At 106 pounds, McDowell is still seeking his first state medal, but he is ranked second in the Dec. 12 KWCA poll for his weight class.

Senior Triston Hurla was the runner-up to top-ranked Greg Tooley of St. Marys at 145 and junior Storm Johnson placed fourth at 160.

“We are returning several guys that have been varsity wrestlers for a few years but have not been able to qualify for state,” coach Brad Lies said. “We have a large group of talented freshmen that have state experience at the kids club level that we will be relying on as well as transfer Bryce Garcia, who went 2-2 at 5A state last year.”

Senior Mike Lopez and sophomore Griffin Bossingham both ended their season at the state tournament last year, and they will be looking for spots on the medals stand this time. Lopez will wrestle 182 and Bossingham will move up to 126 after going 28-14 at 113 a year ago.

“We have a fun team to work with this year. We have a good balance of upper and lower classmen,” coach James Stout said. “We return four of the five bottom weights from last year that combined for a 174-37 record. The upper weights will be young but improved and they will develop throughout the season.” Abilene also brings back seniors Blake Anguaino, Rouven Heid and Alex Henley to go with juniors Blaise Lehman, Caysen Smith and Seth Strauss and sophomore Felix Strauss. “We have three quality seniors with Blake Anguaino the most experienced at the varsity level,” said Stout. “Blake is a tough four-year starter that wrestled 12 state champions or finalists during the season. He will look to have a breakout season this year.” Class 4A / North Central Kansas League 2012-13 Dual Record: 12-6 2012-13 State Placing: 13th Coach: James Stout (11th year) Assistants: Tom Taplin, Corey Casteel, Nathan Howard, Jake Kriegbaum Returning weights: 106 – Logan McDowell, state qualifier, Jr. 113 – Zane Baugh, 3rd at state ‘12 & ‘13, Jr. 120 – Felix Strauss, So. 126 – Caysen Smith, Jr. 138 – Blake Anguaino, Sr. 145 – Seth Strauss, Jr. 195 – Blaise Lehman, Jr. Melanie McGee

The Chargers placed sixth of 13 teams at the Onaga Invitational December 14 with Hurla and Johnson again leading the way. Hurla won the 145 pound class going 4-0 on the day with four pins. Johnson finished second and went 4-1 after dropping to the 152 pound class for the tournament where he posted four pins and lost a 12-5 decision to winner Andrew Beck of Onaga. Four freshmen round out the varsity squad for the Chargers: Mason Schwemmer (170), Chandlor Polston (182), Josh Schmitz (195), and Ryan Rose (220)

Mies is coming off a 36-5 season and a regional championship. He will wrestle at 120 this season. Senior Dylan Eck returns at 126 pounds after winning 14 matches last year, and senior heavyweight Trever Buckner, juniors Chris Betzen, Sander Hanson and A.J. Hein, and sophomore Sam Lubbers also have varsity experience.

CHERRYVALE CHARGERS

The Irish are another year older and coach Jeff Sheets hopes that translates into continued improvement for his team, which had no seniors on the roster last season.

A year ago, Cherryvale had seven seniors on the roster, and with their graduation, the Chargers are beginning 2014 with a very young squad.

“This year we should be a pretty solid team,” he said. “We did not lose anyone from last year’s squad since we had no seniors last year. We still have a few weight classes to work out yet, but once we get to competition, I think we will be competitive.”

That squad got even younger when three wrestlers were lost to injuries, leaving Cherryvale with just two juniors to lead the way.

“With the graduation of seven seniors and three blown ACLs, we are young this year,” said coach James Renfro. “The Chapman’s top returner is sophomore group as a whole is tough but young. FREDONIA YELLOWJACKETS

Emporia has 10 varsity returners including six state qualifiers and a state medalist from the team that finished 11th in last year’s Class 5A State Tournament.

Three-time state champion Brogan Humphrey leads an experienced Fredonia squad this year, and second-year coach Jordan Stewart is excited about the season.

“I am very excited about the team this year,” Stewart said. “We had a pretty successful season last year and we hope to build off of that and improve as a team this year.”

Seniors Max Detwiler and Nollan Kirmer, along with juniors Blake Whitson and Garrett Whitson and sophomore Damian Herera, also return with state tournament experience. Detwiler won 40 matches a year ago and should wrestle at 138 again this year where his is currently ranked fourth.

Humphrey went 45-0 at 138 pounds last year and is looking to cap his career with another state championship. “Brogan is back and healthy,” Stewart said. “He is a leader in and out of the room for the wrestlers and we are looking forward to getting to work and putting together a dominant senior season.”

HAYS-TMP-MARIAN MONARCHS

Preston Weigel is a two-time state champion, finished runner-up as a freshman and is ranked No. 1 in Kansas in the preseason InterMat rankings. Weigel won at 195 pounds in Class 5A last year and will compete at the same weight this season.

TMP didn’t qualify any wrestlers to state last season. The Monarchs have eight wrestlers this season and four who return in the starting lineup. Sophomore Ricky Hockett had a strong start to his year and Tucker Rhoads could make some noise at 113.

“Preston Weigel will be as solid as ever,” coach John Hafliger said. “He has a tremendous work ethic and is a great leader. He will be a force at 195 in 5A.”

Coach Josh Peterson enters his second year as head coach after taking over for Mike Howell in ‘12-13. Peterson was the fourth head coach of the program since ‘07-08 following Brandon Pfeifer, Eric Johnson, and Howell.

Ethan Deterding returns after he placed as a freshman and seniors Kiowa Higdon and Vincent Scott are talented veterans at 170 and 285 pounds, respectively.

Derek Schumacher returns for his second season as an assistant.

“Overall we will be a young team but a team with a lot of potential,” Hafliger said. “Our lower weights will need to get experience in a hurry but I believe we have the ability to be competitive by the end of the season. Our upper weights will be very strong for us.”

The Monarchs enter their first season in the Mid-Continent League, traditionally one of the strongest wrestling leagues in the state featuring state power Norton and consistently strong programs Smith Center, Plainville and Phillipsburg. The league is also strengthened by the addition of Oakley this season.

Hafliger, who is in his 25th year overall, 22nd at Hays High and seventh as the Indians head coach, called Scott a “very athletic heavyweight” and someone that he is hoping to step up and “make a statement.”

The Monarchs finished sixth of nine teams at the December 20-21 Mid-Continent League Round Robin Tournament in Norton. A tournament that was dominated by 3-2-1A favorite Norton.

HERINGTON RAILERS

Second year head coach Nathan Lawrenz will again fight low numbers for his Railer program in 2013-14, with only five wrestlers participating in varsity action thus far. The Railers opened the season at the Wamego Inviatational December 7 and placed 11th of 11 teams with only four wrestler participating. Sophomore Kameron Clark wrestled at 120 pounds, junior Tanner Schneider wrestled at 160, freshman Tate Becker wrestled in the 182 pound class, and freshman Nate Backhus wrestled at 220. The Railers traveled to the Kaw Valley Duals December 20 in St. Marys and those four wrestlers were joined by Payden Griffith in the 138 pound class. Clark eanrned second in the Dual Tournament and Schneider finished in third place. HESSTON SWATHERS

HILL CITY RINGNECKS

Veteran coach Doug Broadfoot calls his Swather team “very young” this winter, a squad that will mostly consist of freshmen and sophomores. Senior Mason Schweitzer is the only returning state qualifier. Broadfoot said senior Tommy Jenkins “should make a major impact” at 132 pounds. “The Swathers will be very young, made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores. Early success may be limited, so it’ll be crucial that the young squad remain positive,” Broadfoot said. Schweitzer, the third ranked wrestler at 126 as of the December 17 KWCA rankings, went 0-2 at the state meet last season and finished 24-14. Jenkins was 15-12 last season, the only other returning wrestler who had a winning record.

Hill City will again fight low numbers during the 2013-14 wrestling season. The Ringnecks took four wrestlers to the Mid-Continent League Round Robin Tournament Friday, December 20, and closed out the pre-break portion of the season by finishing eighth out of nine teams. Those wrestling for the Ringnecks were freshman Gabe Hamel in the 126 pound class, sophomore Devin Owen at 132, sophomore Jacob Kessler at 138, and junior Nathaniel Hamel at 152. Hillsboro had a season of mixed results. The Trojans went 4-10 in dual season and tallied five points at the state meet for a 55th-place finish, but took fourth at league and fifth at regionals. This winter, Hillsboro has a young team with just two seniors and two juniors with varsity experience. “However, this will be a fairly athletic group of guys with a reasonable amount of wrestling experience,” Hillsboro coach Scott O’Hare said. “I am anticipating that they will be very coachable and willing to work hard to improve quickly. KC-WYANDOTTE BULLDOGS

The Bulldogs are looking to continue improving this season with nine varsity wrestlers back in the lineup, including one past state qualifier in senior Roemello Thompson. “Last season was a crucial year as we found out who had the grit to start and finish a season. This year, we continue to build,” second-year coach Jason Dolezal said. “We must compete within our league and generate some momentum towards establishing ourselves as a program. We have recruited some new guys and will look to improve in year two.” Wyandotte also returns senior Cung Bik, juniors Uriel Hidalgo, Mario Matar Soto and That Nung along with sophomores Sam Gebrezeghaber, Cortez Johnson, Travon Nelson and Jonathon Roathe. “We will be led by two returning seniors. Roemello Thompson was a state qualifier as a freshman and Cung Bik could really surprise,” Dolezal said. “The rest of the returners have some mat experience as they look to improve from last year. Travon Nelson has had some success on the federation level at state and we will see if he can translate that to high school success.” Class 6A / Kansas City Atchison League 2012-13 Dual Record: 4-4 2012-13 State Placing: N/A Coach: Jason Dolezal (2nd year) Assistant: Eugene Rodriguez Returning weights: 120 – That Nung, Jr. 126 – Sam Gebrezghaber, So. 126 – Mario Matar Soto, Jr. 132 – Cung Bik, Sr. 138 – Roemello Thompson, Sr. 160 – Uriel Hidalgo, Jr. 170 – Travon Nelson, So. 182 – Cortez Johnson, So. 195 – Jonathon Roathe, So. Lakin is expected to have another young team under coach Nathan Smith, formerly the St. Francis head coach and a Smith Center assistant and graduate. The Broncs have three seniors, two which just started wrestling last season, and only one junior with previous wrestling experience. “This group is an exciting group though, they are excited everyday about coming to practice and getting better,” Smith said. “This is one of the most enjoyable groups of kids I’ve worked with because of their positive attitudes, willingness to work hard, dedication to being good teammates, and thrust for more instruction.” Michael Baxley, Justin Tate and Jared Burrows will be expected to provide leadership for the young team. Lakin scored four points at the state meet last season and finished in 58th place. Senior Dalton Gonzales won two matches at 160 pounds, but graduated. “All three provide a great example of how to showing up and competing can result in positive results,” Smith said. “Michael and Justin are just starting their second seasons as wrestlers and I look for both to make huge improvement over last season. LEON-BLUESTEM LIONS

Despite having just three varsity wrestlers back in the lineup, Bluestem coach Kelly Benton is excited about his team’s prospects this season. “We have a younger team this year, but with that comes much talent,” he said. “We should have a few state qualifiers and possibly some state placers this year. It should be a great season for the Lions.” Senior Adam Wolfe, junior Casey Garner and sophomore Lane Moran are the most experienced wrestlers on the Bluestem lineup. Wolfe will finish his high school career at 145 pounds. “Adam only has one year under his belt but he has the talent to do great things,” Benton said. At 126, Bluestem will get a boost from Garner, a transfer from Eureka. He was the 2013 Tri-Valley League Champion, plus won a regional championship and competed at state last year. Garner began the season ranked fifth in the state and moved to fourth in the 132 pound rankings as of December 30.

A solid senior class will look to lead the Indians to a top-five finish at the state tournament this year. Seniors Austin Chauncey and Kian Clemens are also looking to bolster their resumes for college purposes. “Austin would like to wrestle in college and is quite capable of landing a scholarship,” coach Robert Gonzales said. “Six DII schools and a large number of NAIA schools have expressed interest.” Chauncey already owns a third-place medal from the state tournament and is gunning for more hardware in 2014. He will wrestle at 160 for the Indians. Clemens, also a past third-place finisher, is looking to continue his wrestling career in college. “Kian has a great background in freestyle and has been a member of the Kansas Junior National Team the past two summers,” Gonzales said. Veteran coach Jeff Giles enters his 27th season with the Lions and has a handful of experienced wrestlers, but few with state experience.

Numbers are low at Jayhawk-Linn, but coach Brett Kramer said his team could still make some noise at the state tournament.

The Lions will be led by junior Quentin Clark who is ranked third in the 195 pound KWCA rankings of December 30. Clark was a state qualifier last year and posted a 21-13 record.

“We have a small team, but if we put the work in, we could have several kids qualify for state if not place at state,” he said.

NORTON BLUEJAYS

Norton is considered the heavy favorite to repeat as Class 3-2-1A state champions. The Bluejays returned five of eight state medalists and 10 returning varsity starters. Norton had more than 30 athletes to start the year. “Although Norton surprised most last year by walking away with team title, this year looks to be no surprise, the Bluejays will be the team to beat in 2014,” coach Bill Johnson said. Seniors Alec Hager, Branson Addington and Ethan Ross each won state medals. Hager collected his second straight state medal. First-year varsity wrestlers in sophomores Caysean Campbell and Jared Tallent earned their first career state medals last winter. “As always, we may not get everyone at their state weights until second semester,” Johnson said. “It is a long season and our kids do a good job of planning accordingly. The team’s weakness continues to be in the lack of numbers in the upper weights.”

OAKLEY PLAINSMEN

Oakley has consistently been one of the stronger Class 3-2-1A teams and has a lot of freshmen and sophomores this winter. Coach Dylan Campbell believes the Plainsmen can qualify six or seven to the state meet this season. Macoy Rains is out for the season. “Our seniors are Reilly Ritter, Wayne Flipse and Mason Rains,” Campbell said. “Wayne in particular is much improved from last year. We have a freshman, Austin Holzmeister, that looks pretty tough, and Colter Stoll and Taylor Murphy are looking pretty solid as well.” Oakley will move from the Northwest Kansas League to the tradition-laden Mid-Continent League. Aaron Racette, a former Oakley state champion and Shrine Bowler, has returned to the Plainsmen as an assistant coach.

OBERLIN-DECATUR COMM. RED DEVILS

Coach Joe Dreher has built one of Class 3-2-1A’s best programs. In the last three years, the Red Devils have taken ninth, fifth and sixth at state. Not even state powers Norton and Smith Center have finished in the top-10 in each of the last three seasons. Oberlin tallied 60 points last season, 60.5 the year before and 52 three seasons ago.

In the last seven years, Oberlin has scored at least 22 points six times and collected at least 60 three occasions. This season, senior Dayton Dreher, the coach’s son, headlines the team after two third place finishes and a second place showing last year. Dreher will likely move up two weight classes after he took second to Norton’s John Risewick last year. Dreher went 37-6 with a win by fall in 90 seconds, a 14-2 major decision, a 7-3 victory and an 8-7 loss to Risewick in the final. “It’s going to be tough to fill all the weights, but we have got a good group returning with some quality underclassmen,” Coach Dreher said. Junior Troy Juenemann was sixth at state last season, while junior Rex Diederich and senior Chris Anderson were state qualifiers. “We will expect good things from our seniors,” Coach Dreher said. OLATHE SOUTH FALCONS

Falcon Coach Conor Fitzgerald has a good feeling about his squad this year, though Olathe South returns just three state qualifiers. “I’m very excited about my team this year. We return every varsity letterman from a year ago and the kids have really bought into the program,” he said. “We had a great spring, summer and fall. We plan on surprising a lot of people this season.” Perhaps the most accomplished Falcon wrestler is senior Benjamin Deaton, who owns a sixth-place medal from last year’s state tournament. “The kid has improved tremendously in the time I have been his coach,” Fitzgerald said. “He was a state placer a year ago and we plan on him being higher on the podium this year. He has wrestled close to 30 matches in the offseason.” The Falcons also have two-time state qualifier Bailey Yetmar back for his senior season at 126 pounds. “He missed the opportunity to return to the state tournament and potentially medal last season due to an untimely concussion,” Fitzgerald said. “We are planning on him medaling in Wichita as a senior.” Matt Loy is another senior with state experience. “He has improved greatly in the past year,” Fitzgerald said. “He got a lot of mat time in the offseason, so look out for this kid in February.” Olathe South also returns seniors Camron Finney and Tyler Knard and juniors Tylor Crumrine, Patrick Haase, Tyler Jouret and Pearce Kinzer. PLAINVILLE CARDINALS

The Cardinals are coming off a third place finish at last year’s state tournament, and with state placers Dylan Weisner and Trevor Desaire leading the way, theyíll be tough again in 2014.

RILEY COUNTY FALCONS

Danny Grater, a former Clay Center and Fort Hays State University standout, returns for his third season with the Falcons. He will again coach his brother, Gavin, who won his first state title after a runner-up showing two years ago and a state placing as a freshman. At 182 pounds, Grater finished 41-4.

Weisner, a senior ranked first in Class 3-2-1A at 170 pounds, is coming off a second place finish at state last year, while Desaire owns a sixth-place medal from his “He looks to finish this year again at the junior year. He’ll move up to 152 pounds top and claim his second title,” Grater this season. said. “Dylan Weisner and Trevor Desaire are both returning placers and I look for them to wrestle real well this year. They need to be good leaders in the wrestling room and classroom,” said coach Corey Dobson. “I also look for good things from Trever Houser and Adam Gehring, also two of our leaders.”

Sophomore heavyweight Jared Plante is currently ranked sixth in the state while Houser and Gehring both posted 20-win seasons in 2012-13. Houser is currently ranked fifth at 132.

“Overall, we have been improving the last couple of years,” coach Grater said. “We are still a young team with a couple big seniors up top to lead us toward success. I am really excited to see what some of the underclassman will do with a year of varsity under their belts.”

SHAWNEE-MILL VALLEY JAGUARS

Nine state qualifiers return for the Jaguars, who are looking to improve on last year’s 14th place finish at the state tournament. Among those qualifiers are four state medalists, including 2012 runner-up Tyler Dickman. A year ago, Mill Valley had two thirdplace finishers in Dickman and Jake Ellis. Both are back for their senior seasons, along with three-time state placer Landon Scott. With three fifth-place medals to his credit, Scott is looking to complete his career with another medal at 106 pounds. Senior Logan Marx is back after a second straight trip to state. He took sixth as a sophomore and will wrestle at 132 this year. Mill Valley’s roster also includes two-time state qualifiers Bryan Burnett and Jake Gramke, as well as junior heavyweight Sebastian Uriarte and sophomores Peyton Bendure and Seth Burnett. Those three competed at state last spring and will look to get back there in 2014. “This team has great leadership that is very disciplined and dedicated to the program,” coach Travis Keal said. “We return a lot of experience and success.” Class 5A / Kaw Valley League 2012-13 Dual Record: 8-4 2012-13 State Placing: 14th Coach: Travis Keal (14th year) Assistants: Drew Hudgins, Brett Delich, Dave Hawks Returning weights: 106 – Landon Scott, 3-time state placer, Sr. 132 – Logan Marx, 6th at 2012 state, two-time state qualifier, Sr. 138 – Tyler Dickman, 3rd at state, 2012 state runner-up, Sr. 145 – Bryan Burnett, two-time state qualifier, Jr. 152 – Jake Ellis, 3rd at state, three-time state qualifier, Sr. 160 – Seth Burnett, state qualifier, So. 170 – Peyton Bendure, state qualifier, So. 195 – Jake Gramke, two-time state qualifier, Sr. 285 – Sebastian Uriate, state qualifier, Jr. Melanie McGee

SMITH CENTER REDMEN

Smith Center returns a solid group of wrestlers including three-time state placer Clint Rogers, who is off to a 6-0 start this season. Rogers is looking for another state medal, this time at 152 pounds, and he’s not the only Redmen wrestler who could make some noise in Hays this season. “We only have 11 total wrestlers that we can count on this year, maybe 12 if Steven Kriley gets back, but those 11 guys are tough kids with the will to learn and get better each and every day,” said coach Brock Hutchinson. Smith Center’s roster also includes state placer Cale Rogers at 126, seniors Grant Lambert (10-2 so far) and Wyatt Oliver (9-2 so far), state qualifier Brody Freiling, and junior Josh Cole at 145. Kriley qualified for state last year and could return to action in late January or February depending on his recovery time, Hutchinson said.

ST. FRANCIS INDIANS

St. Francis tied for 50th with seven points at the state meet as senior Zach Geinger took sixth at 182 pounds. The Indians have two seniors in Matt White and Lane Hoffman, who both missed last season because of injuries. The Indians return plenty of experience, including Clay Cassaw, Garrett Brunk, Justin Pacheco, Lane Hobrock, and Shakotah Blanka. Hoffman is a two-time state qualifier. “Going into this season I have high expectations for these young men,” coach Dylan Loyd said. “We are a fairly young team but, I feel like we have some tough competitors in our practice room who are only going to improve each time they step out on the mat.”

All of the Indians, except for Brunk, were key varsity wrestlers last year. Brunk would have started last season, but suffered an injury two weeks into the year and missed the season. St. Marys should have one of the stronger Class 3-2-1A squads in the east this season. Senior Bobby Bleakley is expected to have a strong winter after injuries shortened his junior season. Coach Travis Van Vleck said seniors Luis O’Campo and Shawn Wages have made “huge improvements” in the last three years and look forward to “quality senior seasons.” “The Bears will have a good mixture of experience and youth this season,” coach Van Vleck said. “The Bears welcome eight new wrestlers to the team this year and should be a much improved dual team this upcoming season.” “The Bears look to fill the entire roster for the first time in many years,” he added. “The 2013-14 Bears have high expectations for themselves and have set their goals for the season extremely high.” Class 3-2-1A / Mid-East League 2012-13 Dual Record: 10-4 2012-13 State Placing: 30th Coach: Travis Van Vleck (6th year) Assistant: Brian Braden Returning weights: 120 – Hunter Marshall, So. 132 – Corey Taylor, state qualifier, So. 138 – Greg Tooley, 2nd at state, Jr. 145 – Jayson Failer, state qualifier, So. 152 – Luis O’Campo, Sr. 160 – Bobby Bleakley, Sr. 182 – Shawn Wages, Sr. Conor Nicholl

WAKEENEY-TREGO COMM. GOLDEN EAGLES

WaKeeney-Trego enjoyed its best season in several years last winter when it qualified two wrestlers for the state meet. Cameron Staples graduated after he finished fifth at 170 pounds.

Brandon Schoenthaler is the only returning wrestler from the state tournament last season. He entered the state meet with a 17-17 record, won 12-4 in the first round and then lost by fall in 80 seconds in the second round. He lost third match by fall in 4:35. “He finished the season very strong and hopes to put together a strong senior season,” coach Jeremy Samson said. Sophomores Ryan Deaver and Corbin Schoenthaler had strong seasons as freshmen. Isaiah Fabrizius is the team’s lone junior. WaKeeney-Trego has two seniors in Robert Clark and Tyler Lowry. “We will have a solid nucleus of returners this year that will need to step up into a leadership role that was left by our graduating seniors from a year ago,” Samson said. “Again this year for the most part our team is young, we took some big strides toward the end of last season hopefully we can start this season where we left off last year. Our goal as a team will be to improve each and every day. “
