future. I was a leader and very influential over my peers. I was a go getter,” she remembers from 20 years ago. At age 17, before finishing high school, Raylena, was crowned Miss Juneteenth 1994. “At that time it meant more to me than anything to represent my people.” She says for her it was like winning Miss Wisconsin or Miss America. “I was honored and driven,” she acknowledged. Looking back, she wishes that the pageant would have stayed a part of the local Juneteenth Celebration that is held at the John Bryant Center on the lakefront each year. “It is something the community needs to implement again.” She said it gave young girls a form of structured lifestyle. “It is disheartening because there is nothing like it for young ladies to look forward to anymore.” After high school, she was reluctant to go off to college and opted to go to work, holding down two jobs as she tended to her young son. But the unexpected death of her father in 2001 would motivate her to rethink her entire life. “That was when a light bulb came on in my head.” Soon after, she enrolled in Gateways LPN program, graduated in 2005 and has be a nurse ever since. She says her eight-year career in nursing has been special to her. “I choose it (nursing) because there are not enough compassionate nurses, not enough responsible nurses, and absolutely not enough that are knowledgeable of what nursing entails,” she explained. She says that nursing is an essential part of the healthcare field, and it is something that she does not take likely. “The role I play is vital, but I am not looking for a monetary reward, I am looking for someone’s family member to be healed spiritually and wholly,” she states. For the past two years, a single mother of two, a boy and girl, Raylena says she finds solitude in writing poetry. She said that writing poetry came to her in an unusual way. It was autumn, she said, and
the leaves were falling from the trees. Captivated, she began writing about what she was seeing. “As I began reading” she said, “I experienced an overflow of my feelings being pored out from thoughts of my father.” Now Raylena, who performs weekly on Thursday nights at Gerald’s Smokehouse, 1501 Washington Avenue, believes that her free spirit style on stage as a Poetess came to her from when she and three other friends were offered a recorded deal while they were still in their teens. As teenagers the four had formed a rap group that was to be an opening act for Bondthug, a popular rap group that was on a national tour. She said, like most quick dreams of stardom, their dreams quickly vanished as each of them went their separate ways. But before the disappointment set-in and the group was disbanded, they were able to open for another national act, named Scarface. Today Raylena is satisfied with the path that she has chosen and plans to share her “spoken word” and life experiences with others through a book deal that she says is developing for her.

Obama Picks Lincoln, MLK Bibles for Inauguration King used his Bible “for inspiration and preparing sermons and speeches,” according to the PIC.
On the day of the Inaugural ceremony, President Obama will take the oath of office on two historic Bibles–one that belonged to Abe Lincoln and the other to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The Presidential Inaugural Committee announced Thursday that the president would swear in on both Bibles. Because they are so fragile, both Bibles will be closed and stacked on top of each other, a PIC official said. King used his Bible “for inspiration and preparing sermons and speeches,” according to the PIC. “We know our father would be deeply moved to see President Obama take the Oath of Office using his bible,” Dr. King’s children said in a statement distributed by the PIC. “His ‘traveling bible’ inspired him as he fought for freedom, justice and equality, and we hope it can be a source of strength for the President as he begins his second term.” Get more pure politics at ABCNews.com/Politics and a lighter take on the news at OTUSNews.com Obama used Lincoln’s Bible for his first Inaugural ceremony in 2009. It belongs to the Library of Congress. Photos of the Bible opened to the page signed by Supreme Court Clerk William Thomas Carroll, who gave Lincoln the Bible, are available on the Library of Congress’ blog. It is 4.5 centimeters thick. Rare book collector William Reese said the Lincoln Bible is much larger than the King Bible and would have been called a “family Bible” in its time. Unlike King’s Bible, it would have been too big to carry around
In the 19th century household, Reese said Bibles like Lincoln’s “often would have been read out loud to the family on Sunday” whereas the PIC said King’s traveled with him on the road. The two Bibles would not be historically important, except for their remarkable owners, according to Reese. “All their significance really stems from these great men,” Reese said. Inauguration Lineup Includes Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, James Taylor President Obama is not the first to use more than one Bible at his swearing in, but he is the first since Dwight D. Eisenhower to use one other than a family Bible or one given him personally during the ceremony for the public. both his Inaugural ceremonies, according to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies. For Eisenhower’s first Inauguration, he used both his own West Point Bible and George Washington’s Bible. Eva Longoria Will Host a Latino Inauguration Celebration During a private ceremony on Sunday, Obama will use the Bible that belonged to first lady Michelle Obama’s grandmother, LaVaughn Delores Robinson. The Robinson family Bible was a present from the first lady’s father to his mother on Mother’s Day in 1958, six years before Michelle’s birth.

NECKBONEOLGY Why is Racine Unified Allowing a Racist to Dictate Dr. King‘s Holiday Celebration in the City
BY KENNETH LUMPKIN Recently I was visiting a Unified School District school and was met by a teacher who handed me an anti-bulling sticker to place on my coat. What a great idea I said to myself, It is important that we teach our young people that bullying is wrong and as last place we need it to happen is within our school. One of my colleagues on the Racine County Board feels so strongly about bullying in the schools that he has worked hard over the months to introduce legislation that would make the deed a county crime. Now to my point. Martin Luther King Jr. Day is an opportunity to come together to celebrate freedom, equality, and what we can do together to defend democracy in a real way. Over the past three or four years, Racine Unified School District, The Racine Foundation and United Way, has provided financial support to the kids in their day of volunteering in the spirit of Dr. King’s federal holiday. That’s why I was astonished after conservative shock jock Mark Belling started bullying the administrator of Racine Unified School District, and they so easily conceded to his claims. Their reneging on their commitment exhibited a shocking and dishonorable display of fearfulness in allowing his bullying to influence their support for MLK Day, organized by Youth Empowered in the Struggle, Voces de la Frontera, National Association for the
Advancement of Colored People and Racine Education Association, this newspaper among others. Belling — who periodically fills in for Rush Limbaugh — is well known in Wisconsin for stirring up racial and class hostility. For example, In 2004, he was suspended for calling Latino voters “wetbacks and a few months ago, he referred to young African-American men as “the pigs of mothers who are too lazy to put their children in a crib.” Unfortunately he has influenced our schools’ administrator’s decisions on Martin Luther King Jr. Day. But in the aftermath of School Superintendent Ann Lane characterizing Black parents as unqualified to make decision for their own children, one can easily see her supporting Belling’s point of view. On the other hand, the United Way pull out was not a surprise at all. United Way, which also receives money from minority workers, has defunded all minority community organizations. In 2009, YES students led a community coalition to have Martin Luther King Jr. Day recognized as a school holiday by the school district; it’s shameful that RUSD is letting Belling set the terms for RUSD’s participation. The kids are saying, “We will go on without them.” On Jan. 21, we will celebrate Dr. King’s legacy no matter what Belling or RUSD say about it. If nothing else, Dr. King taught us the importance of standing against the unfairness in America, especially in our own communities. It is your time to stand up with our youth for change. On Monday, January 21, at 11 AM, YES will lead a march for youth justice from High Street and Douglas Ave. Christine Neumann-Ortiz, executive director of Voces de la Frontera, says it best, “This is a lesson our children need to learn. That in spite of the school district caving in to Belling’s hateful rhetoric and bullying, our young leaders and adults are showing courage and conviction in honoring Martin Luther King’s legacy. In fact, Belling might be offering them the best example of why getting involved is so important in the first place.”

ZUMBA Joann Moore goes through intense workout with member of her fitness class
Over Weight As A Child: Moore Teach Fitness to Others Joanne Moore, who was born in Racine, grew up having a weight problem. She, like many other young people, remembers the teasing she received from many of her classmates and friends. About six years ago, the dejected Horlick High School graduate, then weighting 280 pounds, made a staunch decision to lose weight. “I like to exercise and I wanted to lose weight by using different cardiac workouts to do so,” she said. Liking to dance, she decided to try a new form of exercising called Zumba. In the mid-90s, Alberto “Beto” Perez was on his way to teach an aerobics class in Cali, Colombia when he realized he’d forgotten his traditional aerobics music. With no time to turn back, he improvised the class with a mix of salsa and merengue tapes from his backpack. The change of music inspired him to try something new: to focus on being moved by the rhythm instead of counting repetitions. His energy electrified the room — and his students loved the class. That day, Zumba Fitness was born. Miss Moore says that to her Zumba is
more like having a party with friends. Four years after start her exercising routine, she would embark upon a new undertaking. Now weighting only 180 pounds, she would quickly become one of the leading Zumba instructors in the city.
“I know what it is to be over weight,” she admitted.
had health problems because I demonstrate low impact Zumba, rather than high impact which could be difficult for some who might have a knee or leg injury.” However, she does instruct some students in high impact Zumba, which helps them to tone certain parts of their body. In toning, she use weights and during workouts, certain parts of the body is given greater emphasis. Toning is a little more challenging she
“I know what it is to be over weight,” she admitted. “So when I lost weight it inspired me to want to reach out and help others.” She says losing weight can help an individual in so many ways. “It builds your self confidence and self esteem and helps you to prevent bodily injuries." Their are two forms of Zumba she teaches. Moore says that her classes are great for some one that has or has had health issues in the past that has impeded their ability to do strenuous exercise. “Zumba would be good for some who has

says. “You focus on weight when you do toning….I do biceps, triceps, shoulders, backs, and squats.” But she warns all of her students that Zumba is only one part of losing weight. “You have to watch what you eat,” she says. “Zumba is only 20 percent, what you eat is 80 percent,” she concluded. Pastors Willie Scott recieved shouts and praises when he announced last Sunday that the church will breakground this spring for their new facilty
Seven Year Old Ministry Gets Ready To Break Ground Under the leadership of Milwaukee Christian Faith Fellowship Church, a mega church of about 6,000 members, pastor by Bishop Willie Hines, helped a new Racine ministry get started. Willie Scott who, along with his wife Patricia, pastors Racine Christian Faith Fellowship Church, said that he gained valuable leadership skills on how to start a new church from Bishop Hines. Today, Willie and Patricia pastor their congregation from a rented facility located at 3001 Carpenter Ave. Their church is an the extension of the Milwaukee based church, one of about 40 churches that Bishop Hines has served as an adviser. Over the past seven years the church has grown from a membership of 12 supporters and family members, to a congregation of more than 250 hundred. Last Sunday, Pastor Scott received shouts and praises when he announced to his members that the church would break ground this spring for the first step in their four stage building plan. He told his members that the new church would give them the necessary room to host the more than 50 ministries the church has to offer its congregation. “Most important is the new building shows God’s favor on us, it shows us that God has smiled upon us and blessed us,” he emphasized. The first of the four phase project, which is being built on 12 acres of land, will include a multipurpose building and sanctuary, which can convert into a gym or banquet hall. With the land already paid for, the first phase will be valued at 1.2 million dollars.
“Most important is the new building shows God’s favor on us, it show us that God has smiled upon us and blessed us,” Scott emphasize.
