Racine Optimist Hoops Youth holds its 2012 and 2013 basketball tournament On Sunday February 10, the Racine Optimist Hoops Youth held its 2012 and 2013 basketball tournament. All the games were held at the Chavez Community Center. I was able to capture a basketball game between the Hornets vs. the Raptors. These two teams were fighting for the 5th grade boys’ basketball championship. The Hornets were trying to make history by becoming the only 5th grade team to go undefeated this year, but one team stood in their way. That team was the Raptors. Before the game, the gym was filled to capacity, and it was standing room only. This game was like an NBA game 7 finale. The announcer had introduced the Hornets first. Then, she introduced the Raptors. As the names were called, parents, cousins, uncles, aunts, and friends applauded their loved ones. Once the tip of the game began, the Hornets and the Raptors were batting for the 5th grade boy’s championship. Throughout the game, the Hornets and the Raptors gave their fans an exciting basketball game. The 1st, 2nd, and 3rd quarters of the game were close. If there was an NBA player in the Chavez Community Center, he could not have predicted who was going to win this championship. The old adage is-championships are won in the 4th quarter. The start of the 4th quarter brought the fans to their feet. The coach of the Raptors told his players “If we make our free throws, we will win the game”. The coach of the Hornets urged his team with “Let’s win the game”. 7 minutes separated who would be champion and who would take second place. The two teams took the floor and battled for the championship. The game went back in forth for the first 5 minutes of the 4th quarter until only 2minutes were left to decide the victor. In the last 2 minutes of the game, the Hornets took the lead and gained control to win the game. The score of the game was Raptors 30-Hornets 38. This was a complete season for the Hornets, they went undefeated and prevailed as champions. Their basketball record is 8-0 for the 2012 and 2013. Racine Unified Board candidate Michael Frontier says the district could readily meet national averages Racine Unified School Board candidate Michael Frontier says the district could readily meet national averages for graduating seniors within five years and exceed them within 10 years. Frontier, an educator with more than 30 years experience, made his prediction in response to a school board candidate questionnaire distributed by the organization Turn Up The Vote Racine, which surveyed school board candidates in the Feb. 19 election. Discussing his vision and goals for the district over the next five to 10 years, Frontier listed, “Increased graduation rate from its current 67 percent to the national average of 80 percent and to an exemplary 90 percent.” Elaborating on his plan, Frontier said existing RUSD vocational courses could Page 3 Racine Insider News, February 15-28, 2013
accommodate the number of students needed to lift graduation rates to meet the five- and 10-year goals. “We’re at 67 percent, we need to go to 80 percent,” Frontier said. “That’s only a 13 percent increase, or about 260 kids. We’re under utilizing our student apprentice classes, where kids could fix cars or become certified nursing assistants and earn a few dollars at the same time. The kids aren’t aware of these opportunities.” Not every student is destined for college, Frontier said, yet the school district isn’t geared to meeting the needs of every student. “Things have changed and the system hasn’t caught up,” Frontier said. In my many visits to the shop, I have not had to listen to vulgar language, nor have I had to listen to disrespectful out busted about Black women. Mother wants answers to her son’s drowing in 1988 Ever since Carmin White learned that her son had drowned in 1988, her life has not been the same. She admits that learning about her son was devastating, and cast her into a life style of crime and substance abuse. The local newspaper read then, June 18, 1988, “An 8-year-old Racine boy afraid of water drowned this weekend in Jefferson County. ‘Artis Echoles disappeared Saturday at the Bark River Campground, town of Sullivan, where he was camping with Racine foster family,’ said a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy.” White said that she wants to see criminal charges filed against at least one person, and possibly two, in the drowning death of her son, Her son was only 8 years old when he died at the campground. Now, after more than 25 years, a judge has ordered a new investigation into the boy’s death. White said that family members, while going through her father belongings after his death recently, found the original police report of her son’s casualty.
In the report, some witnesses said they saw the young Black boy walked away from the pond with a blonde-haired child. Three other children at the campground on June 18, 1988 told investigators that they saw a man throwing her son into the water and holding his head under water. The man allegedly was trying to make him swim, sheriff’s reports stated. At that time she said she had no reason to suspect foul play–– “I had a good relationship with his foster parents,” explained White, who was released from prison two months ago. She said after reading the report that there seem to be too many conflicting stories by eyewitness. On Jan. 26, White decided she would requested a special “John Doe” hearing because she believed a crime was committed in her son’s death. And on Jan. 30, Jefferson County Circuit Judge Jennifer Weston agreed, ruling “there is reason to believe that a crime has been committed.” Judge Weston’s ruling means the Jefferson County District Attorney must investigate White’s son’s drowning. The Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office has until April 30 to file a criminal complaint, or a written justification as to why charges will not be filed.

NAACP asks President Obama to appoint Black woman to U.S. Supreme Court NAACP President Benjamin Jealous has a bold suggestion for President Barack Obama: Appoint an African American woman to the U.S. Supreme Court. “He still has several more appointments, and we expect that we’ll see at least the same diversity that we saw the first time around,” Jealous told POLITICO. “What we’re hoping to see is a black woman on the U.S. Supreme Court.” Perhaps Jealous is devising a plan to get Obama out of hot water with some Democrats who have accused the president of appointing too many white men to his inner circle and not enough women and people of color. When Obama named Jack Lew as his Treasury secretary two weeks ago — the fourth white male he has named to Cabinet-level posts in recent weeks – Democrats quickly took Obama to the woodshed for not assembling a more racially-diverse and gender-diverse Cabinet. But Jealous didn’t just toss out an idea – he also tossed out a name: California Attorney General Kamala Harris – the state’s first African American and Indian American attorney general. “Kamala Harris would be a brilliant pick,” Jealous said. “I personally would like to see somebody young who could stay on there for decades,” he said. “If you look at what they did with [Justices] Antonin Scalia and we’ll have these guys for decades,” he added. “It’s time for us to [have that]. So yeah, she would be the top. But there are several women who could do this job and do it well.” The outspoken NAACP leader is also reading the political tea leaves: He knows Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg could be considering retirement. She’s 79 years old. Jealous may be on to something:
Harris, 48, is a rising star in the Democratic Party who has been called “the female Barack Obama” in some political circles. Harris, who was born in Oakland, has focused on combating gangs that are trafficking guns, drugs, and human beings throughout California. She also secured an estimated $18 billion from the nation’s banks as part of the recent National Mortgage Settlement. She also attended Howard University, where she pledged Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority. Meanwhile, some prominent Democrats have been turning up the heat on Obama and criticizing his recent appointments. “It’s embarrassing as hell,” said New York Democrat Charles Rangel, one of the most senior black members of Congress. But Jealous said it’s still too early to beat up on Obama. “At the end of the day — this president has been committed to diversity. He showed that in his first term and we owe it to him to let him finish making his appointments before we pass judgment,” Jealous said. “We want to see a Cabinet that represents the country.” The president was forced to defend his record on diversity last week and said his critics should not rush to judgment. “I’m very proud that in the first four years, we had as diverse, if not a more diverse, White House and a Cabinet than any in history,” Obama said. “I intended to continue that, because it turns out when you look for the very best people, given the incredible diversity of this country, you’re going to end up with a diverse staff.” Meanwhile, POLITICO listed Harris as one of its 13 top people to watch in politics in 2013. “…Many Democrats sense her catapulting up the ranks in the party

One thing that really stuck in his mind is when he was 11 years old and he watched a pregnant woman get beat by her male partner. As he watched the family of the woman and neighbors were yelling for her to keep rolling instead of helping her, he could not understand it at a young age. Jackson knew how cruel it was out there and came to Kenosha, Wisconsin to live with his grandmother. His mother wanted a better life for him and knew it meant leaving the place they

WHERE ARE OUR BLACK LEADERS In general anybody can be a leader. Good leaders can lead from the front, the rear or the middle. Leaders don’t have to have to have Phd’s or have gone to military leadership training school. Politicians are not and should not be looked upon as leaders. Politicians are elected by popular vote and represent constituents in a defined geographic area. Leaders are not elected. They are selected for their independent courage and willingness to sacrifice for the good of what ever cause they are selected to lead. Ministers, with all due respect, are not leaders except for the parrish’s and churches that they have been ordained to lead. Business leaders are not leaders of socio-political causes because they primarily represent the interests of those committed to wealth creation and economic stability. Don’t look for a banker or car
dealer to fight for your civil rights. If you look at history most of the great movements of our times were lead by the youthful energy of dissatisfied students who marched, demonstrated, sat in and went to jail because they knew education is not a real education if it won’t allow you to be free and treated fairly. South African apartheid, civil rights marches, Commandos and numerous other movements were student lead. We have Black student unions at our colleges but they are mostly dealing with the obstacles to their survival within the Ivy walls of their educational institutions. Do you remember the last student march, demonstration or boycott? So again we ask “Who are ’Racine’s black leaders and thus, where is Racine’s Black leadership?” For me the simple test of a leader is; Who can lead a march?
Who is powerful enough and respected enough to the point that the community, in mass, would heed their call and take to the streets with unconditional fervor. Who do you know is a leader that can bring other leaders together in the spirit of unity and dedication in order to crush the evils that we are constantly complaining about? Is there anyone you know of? Many potential Black leaders are fearful because in order to be an effective leader you have to have effective followers and protectors when the powers you protest against come after you. Alderman Keith Fair and Alderman Mike McGee Jr. in Milwaukee are a prime examples of how they will whip our children in front of us, like in the slavery days, to show that anyone daring to speak up or speak out will be made an example of. I mention Keith and Mike Jr. because, regard-
less of there failings, they stand up. Common sense may not have ruled the day but they had courage and spirit. We will always support and rally around courage. It’s just a fact, debate us if you will, but we lack courage in the Racine black community and our leaders and Black leadership suffers for it. Can you name a leader? Racine’s Black community is in desperate need of leadership. Let us all pray that in the new year and during Black History Month, our most capable citizens will come together and a strong black leadership will emerge to deliver us from the racially based unfairness that afflicts this community. Black homicide rate “alarming”, prompts warnings National studies have found that young black males in Louisiana are 20 times more likely to be homicide victims by age 24 than other groups. But as with the rest of the population, the primary cause of death for black males under age 15 is accidents. And after age 35, the causes of death for black men mostly align with the rest of the population, with heart attacks being the primary culprit.
Data from the Centers for Disease Control and other sources show homicide far exceeds any other cause of death for black men aged 15 to 35. One report shows homicide rates more than twice as high as accidental deaths for black males age 15-19. A 2009 national report shows Louisiana ranked fourth in the nation in the per capita homicide rate for black males. The reasons for the high homicide rate among young black men vary, said Jimmy McJamerson, Grambling State University retired history professor, and Sen. Sharon Weston Broome, D-Baton Rouge. Broome chairs the Louisiana Commission on Marriage and Family, which received a report on deaths. "It is very alarming," Broome said. "The high mortality rate among African-
American men could be attributed to several reasons." McJamerson agrees but says the reasons boil down to a few basic causes. Topping the list is that too many young black men imitate the "gangster lifestyle," idolizing rappers who portray themselves as tough thugs who carry guns. "As for Tupac and Biggie, young, gifted and visionary African-American males who preferred the gangster lifestyle, now they are silent in their graves," McJamerson said. "They lived the thug life. They believe they would die early in life." But there are deeper reasons, too, he says.---Many young AfricanAmericans waste their lives because they're not aware of the struggles of those who came before. "If they knew more about our great history, they would know the type of things they're involved in would only lead to negative results," he said. Over the years, especially after integration, black communities changed, he said. Parents took two or three jobs "trying to keep up with the Joneses and they forgot to pay attention to the fundamental things in the black community. For example, neighbors once would discipline children who misbehaved "and the child was chastised again when the parents came home. "With integration, all that went away," McJamerson said. At one time, teachers would see parents at a store or in church and tell them how their child was performing and behaving in school. But with integration, we lost that." Broome said she believes "there are so many parts of the equation. There's family environment, lack of education and other elements in society" that influence young men.
The Commission on Marriage and Family is looking at policies that might improve the situation, she said, and it
could assemble some suggestions for the governor.

Jennings named NBA Player of the Week The National Basketball Association announced that Bucks guard Brandon Jennings has been named Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played last week. The award is the third of Jennings’ career and second this season after he took home the honor following the opening week of play on Nov. 5. Jennings averaged 24.5 points and 6.5 assists per game while shooting 47.7 percent from the field and 50.0 percent from beyond the arc in leading the Bucks to a 3-1 week. He led or coled the Bucks in scoring in all four games, and his 24.5 points per contest was the second best average in the conference during the week, trailing only Carmelo Anthony’s 28.7 points per game mark.
