Abundant Life Christian Center Partners with Racine County Food Bank for Easter Community Outreac The Abundant Life Christian Center located at 3433 Douglas Avenue., Racine, Wisconsin focused on giving back to the community during the 2014 Easter Resurrection Season through a partnership with the Racine County Food Bank. Members meet for two consecutive Saturdays prior to Easter Resurrection Sunday to collect food donations from community members at Piggly Wiggly on 3 Mile and Walmart on Durand Avenue. The “Super Six” most needed items from the Racine County Food Bank was part of the outreach effort developed by the Senior Pastor Elliott Cohen and implemented by the outreach coordinators Ernest and Rachel Chavez. Volunteers from Abundant Life Christian Center helped to collect the food donations from the Abundant Life members and the Racine Community at the donation sites. The campaign exceeded the initial targeted goals and required additional make shift containers to receive the abundance of food donations for the Racine County Food Bank. More than 50 Million Americans live in poverty with 33% being children. Helping a hurting community is how the Abundant Life Church came “Alive” on Easter Resurrection Sunday.

NECKBONEOLGY Jim Kaplan Gloats Over Win In A Primarily by Kenneth Lumpkin
African-American and Hispanic District
Kenneth Lumpkin
Moments after the results of the spring election were announced, Alderman Jim Kaplan made a surprise call to me on my cell phone. He was jubilant over learning that
he had defeated Daryl Carter by 36 votes. Carter, a first time candidate, had run a strong campaign against the three term alderman. Kaplan's strange call to me referred to the fact that the Insider News had carried a photo of the three African American candidates on the front page of the previous edition. “I want to know what you are going put on your front page now, he said in an gloating tone. Kaplan apparently believes that the newspaper was being racist by highlighting the three candidates. Let me just say, "Anyone who knows me, knows that I'm not a racist, in fact, some of my best friends are white." Readers of this newspaper, even Kaplan, should know that the newspaper has always recruited and promoted African American candidates, hoping to break through what is often considered "The Other Glass Ceiling." This effort extends beyond just politics and actively encourages Black business enterprise. In the 4th District, where Kaplan resides, people of color constitute over 60 percent of the eligible voters, The Insider News, and myself personally, have always encouraged minorities to get involved in the future of their community. In fact the 4th and 3 other aldermanic districts were constructed to increase
the possibility of more minority participation in government. Astonishingly, Kaplan feels that no one has the right to run against him. As an elected official for the past 16 years myself, I have been very critical of his lack of support for the entire 4th District. Now, on his Facebook page he lists Carter and myself as his two worst enemies. In fact he claims he prays for the two of us to be forgiven for running a campaign against him. Is it possible to be more arrogant? My response to him is that I will pray for his forgiveness, if he sin-
cerely asks for it, for his lack of effective representation. Right now, in this article, I call on all citizens of the 4th District (and the entire nation) to become informed about how simple a process it is to vote and participate in government. It is as much a responsibility as it is a right. Only 252 voters in the 4th District voted in the recent election. That is an embarrassingly small number. If I were inclined to print a response on the front page of this paper, Mr. Kaplan, it would be "Voter Apathy Allows Another Term For Unfit Alderman."

Bishop Kirby to release new book entitle “You are a Winner!” We are pleased to announce Bishop Lawrence L. Kirby new book release July, 2014 entitled, “You are a Winner!” We all live in a fallen world. In the words of Kirby’s grandmother, “IF IT AIN’T ONE THING, IT IS ANOTHER.” We are confronted with problems, pain, and persecution. We are also confronted with burdens and brokenness. These challenges sometimes cause us to feel down, disgusted, disenfranchised, and even depressed. This word is written to encourage people to look up and be a positive people. It is intended to encourage people to focus on the positive and not the negative. In the words of our forefathers, “Behind every dark cloud, the sun is still shining.” The people of God are winners and walk in victory; “We go through the valley and the shadow of death” (Psalm 23:4). These collection of sermons are designed to help us to go THROUGH the rough times to get to the good times. It is my hope and prayer that this collection will help you to build your faith and remind you of who we are. We are conquerors and we live in VICTORY! For the past 33 years, Bishop Lawrence Lee Kirby has served as Senior Pastor of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in Racine, Wisconsin. The church is Wisconsin oldest registered predominantly African-American Church organized in March 1857. Under Bishop Kirby’s leadership, the St.
Paul Missionary Baptist Church has grown to be one of the largest and most progressive churches in Wisconsin. The church has built a new sanctuary, a Senior Citizen Housing Complex, and a Multi-purpose storage garage. The church has also opened a Day Care facility, The Hope House (Youth Group Home), The Miracle Center(Banquet Hall), The Mercy House (Food and Clothing), and purchased a 44,000 square foot school that houses Racine Head Start Program. Bishop Kirby is a lecturer for the National Congress of Christian Education, an auxiliary of the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc, a member of the Executive Board and Director of Economic Development, (8 million member organization). He has served as Vice President of the Wisconsin State Convention for 3 terms. His travels have taken him throughout the world to more than sixty (60) countries, including Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and the Caribbean. He is often called upon as a guest preacher, evangelist, lecturer and teacher throughout the United States. He is married to the Dr. Reneé Sartin Kirby, and they have two children: Pastor Lawrence L. Kirby II (Chandrika)-Senior Pastor of Second Baptist Church in Kenosha, Wisconsin; Charisse Kirby, and three grandchildren (Kennedy, Marley and Reggie).
No state worse than Wisconsin for black children, says new national study
For African-American children seeking a better future, no state looks worse than Wisconsin. A new national report shows that children of color face enormous barriers to
educational and financial achievement — with Wisconsin ranking last in the disparity between white children and their nonwhite peers. White children growing up in
Wisconsin ranked 10th among the states in an index measuring 12 key indicators at various stages of life, including home situation, educational skills and income. But Wisconsin ranks 50th for black children, 37th for Asian children and 17th for Latino children, according to the study from the Annie E. Casey Foundation titled “Race for Results: Building a Path to Opportunity for All Children.” Wisconsin ranks with Michigan and Mississippi for the worst record on AfricanAmerican achievement. While alarming, the findings in the new Casey report are not new. The Wisconsin Council on Children and Families' Race to Equity report, directed by Erica Nelson, recently identified the same sort of racial divide in liberal Dane County, one of the wealthiest counties in the state. Ken Taylor, executive director of WCCF, says Wisconsin is a state that has long claimed to value opportunity and fairness for all its citizens. But in a statement pegged to the Casey report, he says scoring worst in the nation for the well-being of black children
Page 11 Racine Insider News, February 1-30, 2014
is unacceptable. “Surely Wisconsin can do better than this,” he says. The Casey report found that 70 percent of Wisconsin’s white children live in households with incomes above 200 percent of the poverty level, about $47,700 annually for a family of four. At the same time, only 20 percent of black children have that level of economic security. For Latino and Native American kids in Wisconsin, about a third come from households above the 200 percent of the poverty level. On higher education, white adults ages 25 to 29 in Wisconsin are three times as likely to have an associate’s degree or higher than their African-American or Latino peers. And among middle school students, white kids are six times more likely to be proficient in 8th grade math than black students. The Casey study emphasizes the need to address the issue now since minorities will represent a majority of the nation’s children by 2018. The report notes that children raised in economically challenged households and communities face tremendous challenges from day one. “Research has shown that growing up in chronic poverty contributes directly to

from page 11
health, brain development and social and emotional well-being — a response known as ‘toxic stress,’ ” says the Casey report. Unfortunately, African-American children in Wisconsin have been living in economically stressed situations for decades. A study from the 1980s by the WCCF showed that 60 percent of black children under age 5 in Wisconsin were living in households under the poverty line, the highest percentage in the U.S. “It’s not a new issue … but that doesn’t make it any less important,” says Bob Jacobson, communications director for the Madison-based nonprofit. Jacobson says that reports like Casey's and the WCCF’s report on Dane County all make the case that the roots of the racial divide run deep, but he says there are proven strategies that can make a difference. They include early, high-quality education, access to health care and meaningful employment opportunities. “We now have the data and we know what works, but we need to have more of a dialog to foster greater collaboration among the various groups,” he says. "All of us, from elected officials to scholars to neighborhood activists to parents, must act now to promote a better future for every one of our children. This is not only the right thing morally, it is also the smart thing economically. We cannot afford to miss out on the contributions communities of color make to our neighborhoods, our state, and our nation,” Taylor said in a statement. The Annie E. Casey Foundation worked with WCCF in putting together its report, the foundation's first comprehensive look at the racial divide and the impact on children. The Annie E. Casey Foundation is a private charitable organization, dedicated to helping build better futures for disadvantaged children in the United States. The foundation was established in 1948 by Jim Casey, one of the founders of UPS, and his siblings, who named the foundation in honor of their mother.

Dashawn Jenkins says she has always aspired to taking care of others. She believes it is somewhat a calling for her. Most recently she open Dreamland Daycare Center, 3034 Kentucky St, in Racine. The center accepts ages four weeks to 12-year-old children. The daycare center is licensed to accommodate up to 30 young people. Jenkins, 33, is no stranger to childcare. For the past eight years until October of 2013 she had ran an in-home daycare center while juggling her time as a student enrolled in Gateway aiming to become a nurse. Close to completing Gateway’s nursing program, she now is enrolled in the school’s early childhood program. She said that the changeover from in-
home daycare to her new facility has been challenging, but it will be rewarding to the kids that attend her business. She said she was drawn to opening her daycare center based on the state’s YoungStar program. The goal of YoungStar is to improve the quality of childcare and reward high-quality providers by: Establishing a 5 Star quality rating system for all childcare providers. Her center is in the process of being rated, but she says her goal is to become a five star facility. This means her daycare will have met the highest levels of quality standards. Lupita Nyongo: People Magazine’ s Most Beautiful
She’s the total Tinseltown package of brains, beauty and heart, so it’s little surprise Lupita Nyong’o has been crowned People magazine’s “Most Beautiful.” “This year’s process was as unanimous as I’ve ever seen it,” staff writer Julie Jordan told the Daily News Wednesday as the 25th Anniversary issue was unveiled. “Of course she’s beautiful, but Hollywood has lots of beautiful faces. The way Lupita went from an unknown to an icon in such a short period proved to us she was worthy,” Jordan explained.
“She’s a testament to true beauty, inside and out.” The New York-based Yale grad won countless hearts and dozens of awards – including the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress – for her harrowing performance in Steve McQueen’s historical drama “12 Years a Slave,” released last November. The breakout beauty also ruled red carpets from coast to coast with her impeccable style, racked up a million followers on Instagram and landed a contract with beauty giant Lancome. Still, she called her People cover a “major, major compliment.” "I was happy for all the girls who would see me on [the cover] and feel a little more seen,” she told People, recalling how she used to equate beauty with the “light skin and long, flowing, straight hair” she saw on TV. Lupita Nyong'o's big night! The starlet took home the award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in '12 Years a Slave.' Born in Mexico and raised in Kenya, she recently confessed to struggling with her self image as a child. “I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned,” she said in a moving speech at Essence magazine’s Black Women in Hollywood luncheon last February.
Wisconsin Voters ID Law Overturned By Federal Judge A federal judge in Milwaukee struck down Wisconsin's voter Identification law Tuesday, saying a requirement that voters show a state-issued photo ID at the polls imposes an unfair burden on poor and minority voters. U.S. District Judge Lynn Adelman sided with opponents of the law, who argued that low-income and minority voters aren't as likely to have photo IDs or the documents needed to get them. Adelman said the law violated the U.S. Constitution's guarantee of equal protection. Adelman's decision invalidates Wisconsin's law and could set a precedent for similar legal challenges in Texas, North Carolina and elsewhere. At least 14 states require voters to show photo ID, and legislation in dozens of other states includes proposals to either introduce new voter ID laws or strengthen existing ones. Just last week, an Arkansas judge struck down that state's voter ID law; it is being appealed to the Arkansas Supreme Court. Wisconsin's Republican-led Legislature passed the photo ID requirement in 2011, scoring a long-sought GOP priority. Former Gov. Jim Doyle, a Democrat, had vetoed a similar requirement three times between 2002 and 2005. Republican backers argued that requiring voters to show ID would cut down on voter fraud and boost public confidence in the integrity of the election process. Democrats countered that Republicans

never produced evidence of any widespread fraud in Wisconsin, and said the mandate would keep poor people, immigrants and senior citizens from voting. Wisconsin's law was only in effect for a 2012 primary before a Dane County judge declared it unconstitutional. The federal challenge combined two separate cases. One was brought by minority-rights groups, including the Wisconsin chapter of the League of United Latin American Citizens, and the other involved the American Civil Liberties Union. Racine County Board Supervisor Kenneth Lumpkin was a key witness in the ACLU case, testifying that “overturning the ID law is important to assuring equal opportunity for all citizens to vote.” The plaintiffs argued the law violates the federal Voter Rights Act, but their case isn't the only legal challenge. In state court, the League of Women Voters and the NAACP's Milwaukee branch filed separate lawsuits alleging the law violates Wisconsin's Constitution. Those challenges are being considered by the Wisconsin Supreme Court, which heard arguments in late February; it's not clear when the justices will rule. For the voter ID law to be reinstated, it will have to pass both the federal and state challenges. However, Adelman's decision doesn't necessarily render the state cases moot because his decision likely will be appealed.
