Dan Sharozy remembers Reid-Owens as a champion for rights for others The passing of Corinne Reid-Owens has saddened us. In her nearly 100 years, she provided us with many examples of leadership, persistence, values, and so much more. She came through a time when women were not even allowed to vote or run for political offices. She came through a time when the color of her skin forbade her from many Dan Sharkozy of the 8th District Supervisor rights that people today take for granted. Ms. Owens was on the front lines marching with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., advocating for Civil Rights in 1964. She

helped America rid itself of one of its horrible blemishes; a time when activists like her supported President John F. Kenney to pass laws to making sure all Blacks could vote and get a good education. Those laws ended segregation in schools, jobs, restaurants, theaters, and much, much more. Ms. Owen earned her nickname as Racine’s own Rosa Parks. We hope that Ms. Owens’ efforts are continued through our youth growing up in our school system, where she became a teacher after working her way up from a janitor, even though she had a teaching degree. In 1953, she went on to become the first black woman elected to the board of directors to Gateway Technical College. The accomplishments of Ms. Owen should inspire our youth to take advantage of education, but her determination should be an example for all of us to follow. As a county supervisor, Ms. Owen inspired me and made me proud to represent her on the Racine County Board, where we honored her many times for her role in Women’s History.
Insider News Editoral Is the City Wasting Taxpayers Money? On Wednesday evening, November 7, the Racine City Council addressed the ongoing issue concerning the tavern known as “The Place on 6th”, which has been owned and operated by First District Alderman Keith Fair. The city is seemingly committed to the closure of the downtown establishment and has called Fair in for a “due process” hearing as well as labeling his business a “nuisance property”. An unprecedented amount of resources have been spent on this effort and, until Wednesday, without results. Fair’s attorney, William Bobit, speaking on behalf of Fair, advised the City Council that the police department had proposed a remedy which Fair agreed to and which is the procedure prescribed for such situations under state statute. He requested that the Council adhere to the statute and refrain from delicensing Fair’s tavern unless the agreed upon remedy failed. Disregarding that advice and request, the City Council went ahead with its effort to enforce closure of the establishment. After a brief discussion, a vote was taken on a motion to revoke Fair’s license. The vote was sharply divided along the color line, with all white council members voting for revocation and all black council members voting against. While it is true that The Place on 6th has had some incidents requiring police intervention, the number and severity of those incidents is less than a number of white owned bars have generated, none of which have been subjected to discipline. Selective enforcement of laws is discriminatory, and when clearly done against minorities it speaks of racism and repression as well. Page 5 Racine Insider News, November 15-30, 2012

Brooks Kenosha NAACP keynote speaker The Rev. Herbert Brooks, a former guest chaplain in the U.S. Congress, was the keynote speaker at the Kenosha NAACP’s annual fundraising Freedom Fund Dinner, held Nov. 3 in the Parkway Chateau of the Brat Stop. The theme of the event was “Your Power — Your Choice — Your Vote.” Brooks is pastor of the St. John M.B. Church in Joliet, Ill., and a member of the Will County (Ill.) Board. He is a member of the Joliet Branch NAACP. His community and civil rights involvement includes faith-based volunteer efforts with a high school district, service with Will County’s Big Brothers/Big Sisters on the board of directors and as past president of Rainbow PUSH. On July 21, 2010, Brooks served as chaplain for the day at the U.S. Capitol. According to Kenosha NAACP President Veronica King, the dinner recognized individuals, groups and local organizations with the Positive Impact Awards. Branch officials said they are encouraging residents to nominate those they feel are worthy for the award in advancing the cause of civil rights.
Racine Branch NAACP Election Result The Racine Branch NAACP completed its Biennial Branch Election Saturday, November 10, 2012, at the Dr. John Bryant Community Center, with voting from 9:00a.m. – 1:00p.m. The only contested race was that of President. Minister Lawrence Terry won the office of President over current Branch President, Gloria Rogers. Other officers elected were: Donnie Snow, elected 1st Vice President, Julian Jones – Secretary, and Ann Kirkwood – Assistant Treasurer. In addition, eight persons were elected to the Executive Committee at large: Dwight Mosby, Maggie Cobb, Pearline W. Terry, Mae Ellis, Pastor Ernest J. She became the first openly gay politician, and first Wisconsin woman, elected to the U.S. Senate. The seven-term Democratic congresswoman edged past former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson in a win that advocacy groups hailed as a significant stride toward bringing diversity to the Senate. Baldwin said she ran "to make a difference" and not to make history, but she said she hopes the Senate will be more reflective of America and the "life experience" of women. "Having a seat at the table matters and I think we will see a Senate that is more reflective of America. We're certainly not there yet, but this will be a change that moves us forward," she told CNN. "People ... see our country and our states moving toward full equality in many respects," Baldwin said. "When you have legislative bodies that look more like America, that happens." Baldwin was one of many successful gay and lesbian candidates in local and state races this election cycle, which also included her successor in her legislative district in Madison, state Rep. Mark Pocan.

Golden Gate Funeral Home Helps Family With Burial Of Children

According to Racine fire officials, a candle apparently started an inner city house fire that killed three children and critically injured a fourth. Officials said last week that the electricity to the home in the 1900 block of Linden Ave. had been turned off. The four children were pulled from the burning home by firefighters who described the heat and the smoke as intense. Two children, Dayja, 9, and her sister, Dalijah, 8, died Thursday after being pulled from the fire. On last Friday their brother, Michael, 7, died of injuries suffered in the fire at Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Wauwatosa. A fourth child, Luther Patterson, 5, remains at Children's Hospital. The children's mother, Deborah Scott, ran from the home to her parents' home across the street and called 911, screaming and crying that her children were trapped in the home and that smoke prevented her from getting them out of the house, fire officials said.

Funeral services for the three Scott children will be held Friday in Racine. There will be a public viewing from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Greater Mount Eagle Baptist Church, 920 State St. in Racine. The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Westlawn Cemetery. On Thursday there will be a public viewing at the Golden Gate Funeral Home, 1910 Taylor Ave. in Racine, beginning at 10 a.m. The Golden Gate Funeral Home, who recently opened a satellite location in Racine, will provide service to the family at no cost, explained Arthur Reid, president/CEO of Golden Gate. When asked why, he replied, “This is what I do.” He added, “I put myself in a person’s position. If I was in their situation and needed help, I would hope that someone would help me.” A Scott Children Memorial Family Fund has been established at the Educators Credit Union and Associated Bank in Racine and Kenosha.
Nation Reaffirms Confidence in President Barrack Obama The conclusion of one of the longest and bitterest political campaigns in American history has resulted in a second term for President Barack Obama. Defeated Republican Vice Presidential candidate and Wisconsin native Paul Ryan, recently expressed surprise at the result, but Democrats have won the popular vote in five of the last six Presidential races. Racine was carried by the Democrats, largely due to the efforts of a strong, on the ground team led by activists such as Jameel Ghauri, Kelly Gallaher, the NAACP and the local Democratic Party. Nationally, Republican support was centered in the “Old South” and more rural regions. It remains to be seen whether the Democrats and Republicans in Congress will now work together to implement the vision America chose in 2008 and again in 2012. This President’s first four years were extremely challenging after inheriting a collapsed economy and an unprecedented private sector job loss rate. Republican resistance to all efforts by Obama often seemed more focused on derailing his Presidency than on healing the country’s ills. Hopefully the President’s re-election will make it clear that his agenda is the public’s preferred direction for the country and a true spirit of co-operation will emerge. Everyone seems to agree that the nation has made some progress from the dismal circumstances that prevailed in 2008 but that a faster pace would be desirable. While it is hoped that the President is able to bring people together to achieve this, the secessionist sentiments that have arisen among the most radical conservative elements indicate how difficult it will be. from page 14

Community Women’s Club holds event in honor of civil rights leader Corrine Reid-Owens By Kenneth Lumpkin The Racine Community Women’s Club for months had planned to celebrate the birthday of one of the club’s founding members Corrine Reid-Owens. The event was altered when Owens died Tuesday, Nov. 6, one day before she would have turned 100. Denise Gardner, the club’s president, said the group felt it was important to continue by honoring Owens for all the things that she had done for the community through civil rights, housing, and for the people of Racine. About 150 people, made up of elected officials, church members and friends, attended the event to pay homage to the woman who arrived in Racine from Mississippi in 1946. George Stinson a retired businessman, who himself served as Racine Branch President for over 20 years, said that Owens is leaving a big void in Racine when it comes to civil rights. “I hope that others can step in and take her place and be as productive as she was”
Soon after arriving, Owens began to devote her time to education and quality of life issues. She joined the local branch of the NAACP in 1947, and was elected as its president in 1953. Her fight for what was right, however, began even earlier with her own quest to be an educator. Alderman Michael Shields, who served one term as the branch president, said, “When she first came to Racine she wanted to be a teacher, but she could only get hired as a janitor, even though she had a teaching degree” Owens would later become one of the first black teachers in the Racine Unified School District and then went on to become the first black woman to be elected to the board of directors for Gateway Technical Institute. Morris Reece, who heads the city’s Fair Housing Program, said Corrine Owens is not only a legend that will be missed in the Racine community, but she left so many things that we have built on and continue to build on and we so gracefully admire her courage for standing up
when she came to this community. He said for her achievement, Racine will always remember her as an icon and she will never be forgotten Owens was also a kind, considerate person — one who never hesitated to speak up for what she believed in, said Shields. “She was just a wonderful person, who really stood up for justice. She is going to be missed” Al Gardner, a community activist, said that Owens was a grand lady and should be an example to the Black community to speak up on issues and not remain silent. “Hopefully we can do what Mrs. Owens did, open our mouths so we can get fed. If you keep your mouth shut you will not get fed. She always opened her mouth for the rights of all people” Thomas White, a long time friend of Owens and State President of the NAACP, remembers when he came to Racine in 1965 and met Owens. He described her as having lots of energy. “If she didn’t feel well and you mentioned the NAACP she would perk right

up, that was the kind of person she was” he stated. In the 1970’s, Owens, with the help of Joe Harris, formed the Concerned Citizens Group, which led to the hiring of a record number of African American police officers. Our current Chief of Police, Art Howell, was a member of that initial group of hirees. He described Owens as a visionary and said that many of his accomplishments are directly attributable to some of her early efforts. Rev. Ernest Garrison, who recently became pastor of Wayman AME Church, said that he has had many opportunities for a blessing. Early on he was astonished when he had the opportunity to pastor a small church in Detroit, not knowing that the church would be the one that Rosa Parks would choose to be her place of worship. “The same thing happen when I came to Racine, and I had the opportunity to pastor a woman of the same caliber as Rosa Parks, Shirley Chisholm and Barbara Jordan”
