Insider News 2012 Man of the Year Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness. Martin Luther King, Jr.
The tradition of selecting a Man of the Year began in 1927 with Time magazine editors contemplating possible newsworthy stories during a slow news week. The idea was also an attempt to remedy the editorial embarrassment earlier that year of not having aviator Charles Lindbergh on its cover following his historic trans-Atlantic flight. By the end of the year, it was decided that a cover story featuring Lindbergh as the Man of the Year would serve both purposes. Since this tradition began with newspapers, all United State Presidents have been selected with exception of Calvin Coolidge. There have been several chosen by Time that were considered questionable. An example of that is Adolf Hitler, who was chosen by the magazine as 1938’s Man of the Year. What you might not know is that two African-Americans have been chosen by Time magazine. Before you go any further take a guess. Here’s a hint: One was selected in 1963 and the other person has been selected twice. You got it right if you said Dr. Martin Luther King in 1963 and President Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. The Black press takes a different view in the selection of its candidates. We look at the newsmakers in the Black community and how each person has impacted change in the city where he or she resides. Although there are stated rules of
the people you were elected to serve,” he explained. As an Alderman, Fair has sat in places that the normal citizen or constituent doesn't get the opportunity to experience. He believes that the trust that has been placed in him to represent and serve is very important. We believe he has served the community well, with his sometimes candid and raw style of asking questions to get to the bottom of his constituents’ concerns. He says, it’s because he and other Aldermen should stand in the gap for those that can not stand in the gap for themselves. Change in government is an integral part of his philosophy on how he can make a difference. “When we speak of n change, sometimes change doesn't come a erm ith as easy for some as it does for others". d l A Dr. Martin Luther King once said, Ke ir “The ultimate measure of a man is not Fa where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.” In the past year his life has been filled selec- with challenge and controversy. decentralization of city government in order to bring government back to the people. "Government is top heavy, with the Mayor, City Administrator, and City Attorney answering only to each other and placing barriers around the government to lock the people out". He says its time that the two branches be separated. “The city council should not be answering to the mayor, nor should the Mayor be presiding over the city council,” said Fair. By placing reform on the table, we can change the old practices that have serious potential for abuse of power. We agree with Fair, the city of Racine has to go back to the foundational form of government that was laid out for us by our forefathers, “government of the people for the people and by the people” with a system of "checks and balances" and serving the people's right to know. We urge him to continue to fight for citizen inclusion as opposed to rule by a few and exclusion for all others. We can no longer practice a form of "class warfare", where certain segments of the community have to fight for rights that have already been established for them by Law. Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness. Martin Luther King, Jr.

What Depression Looks Like in A Black Man
by Ellis Moore, BDO Staff Writer Clinical depression—in women or men—can cause sadness and a loss of interest in once pleasurable activities. But depression can sometimes manifest in different ways in different people. While the symptoms used to diagnose depression are the same regardless of gender, often the chief complaint can be different among men and women. You can’t go after one symptom, but instead have to assess a group of symptoms. Here are signs of depression in men. Although men don’t always talk about feelings of depression, depression in men is common. Learn about the symptoms of clinical or major depression in men
Irritability Instead of seeming down, men who are depressed often show signs of irritability. If they talk about an emotional component, it could be sadness with irritability. In addition, negative thoughts are a common aspect of depression. Men will report feeling irritable because they are having negative thoughts constantly.
They’re stressed Men might be more likely to report symptoms of depression as stress. It’s not that they have
more stress; it’s that it’s more socially acceptable to report it. Stress and depression can also travel a two-way street. It’s accurate to say that feeling stressed can be an indicator of having clinical depression but also be part of the cause. Research has shown that prolonged exposure to stress can lead to changes both in the body and brain, which can in turn lead to depression.
Anger or hostility Some men manifest depression by being hostile, angry, or aggressive. A man who realizes something is wrong may need to compensate by demonstrating that he is still strong or capable. Anger and hostility are different than irritability. Anger tends to be a stronger emotion. Irritability is a crankiness. Men can also become hostile when they have withdrawn as a result of their depression and feel under pressure by friends or family to rejoin society.
Sexual dysfunction Depression is a common reason for loss of desire and erectile dysfunction (ED), and it’s one symptom that men are inclined not to report. Performance problems can come from depression and make depression worse. However, ED can be the result of other medical conditions or medications (including antidepressants), and ED by itself
Page 4 Racine Insider News, January 1-15, 2013
does not signal depression.
Substance abuse Substance abuse frequently accompanies depression. Research has shown that alcoholics are almost twice as likely to suffer from major depression as people without a drinking problem. It can happen for both men and women, but using drugs or alcohol to mask uncomfortable feelings is a strategy many men will employ instead of seeking health care. There’s a cultural bias of, ‘I should be able to fix this myself and so I’ll use what chemicals I have available to me to do that.
Difficulty concentrating Psychomotor retardation can slow down a man’s ability to process information, thereby impairing concentration on work or other tasks. Depression fills one with negative thoughts, almost like an intrusion. You’re slowed down and constantly thinking about negative things in your world. As a result it makes it very difficult to focus on anything. Depression is as a form of reversible brain failure.
Fatigue People who are depressed undergo a series of physical and emotional changes. They can experience fatigue, as well as psychomotor retardation, or a slowing down of physical movements, speech, and thought processes. Men are more likely than women to report fatigue and other physical symptoms of depression as their chief complaints.
Sleeping too much or too little Sleep problems—such as insomnia, waking up very early in the morning, or excessive sleeping—are common depression symptoms. [Some people] sleep 12 hours a day and still feel exhausted or toss and turn and wake up every two hours. Like fatigue, sleep troubles are one of the main symptoms that depressed men may discuss with their doctor, experts say.
Stomachache or backache Health problems such as constipation or diarrhea, as well as headaches and back pain, are common in people who are depressed. But men often don’t realize that chronic pain and digestive disorders go hand in hand with depression, according to focus groups conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health. People who are depressed do genuinely feel bad physically.

Unemployed Black Woman Pretends to be White and Gets More Job Offers Yolanda Spivey, an African American woman, was recently looking on Monster.com for a job in the insurance industry, but found that she wasn’t getting any job offers. So, as an experiment, she set up a fake account identifying herself as white and changing her name to Bianca White to see if employers would respond differently. Here's her story below in her own words (as originally printed in Clutch Magazine): Two years ago, I noticed that Monster.com had added a “diversity questionnaire” to the site. This gives an applicant the opportunity to identify their sex and race to potential employers. Monster.com guarantees that this “option” will not jeopardize your chances of gaining employment. You must answer this questionnaire in order to apply to a posted position - it cannot be skipped. At times, I would mark off that I was a Black female, but then I thought, this might be hurting my chances of getting employed, so I started selecting the “decline to identify” option instead. That still had no effect on my getting a job. So I decided to try an experiment: I created a fake job applicant and called her Bianca White. First, I created an email account and resume for Bianca. I kept the same employment history and educational background on her resume that was listed on my
own. But I removed my home phone number, kept my listed cell phone number, and changed my cell phone greeting to say, “You have reached Bianca White. Please leave a message.” Then I created an online Monster.com account, listed Bianca as a White woman on the diversity questionnaire, and activated the account. That very same day, I received a phone call. The next day, my phone line and Bianca’s email address, were packed with potential employers calling for an interview. I was stunned. More shocking was that some employers, mostly Caucasian-sounding women, were calling Bianca more than once, desperate to get an interview with her. All along, my real Monster.com account was open and active; but, despite having the same background as Bianca, I received no phone calls. Two jobs actually did email me and Bianca at the same time. But they were commission only sales positions. Potential positions offering a competitive salary and benefits all went to Bianca. What do you think? Can I Be An Inspiration to you? Patricia Hopkins Hewlett, was born and raised in Racine, and found comfort being a member of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church as a child. But somewhere along the way life changed for her and she found herself trapped in drugs and alcohol. At the age of 18 she started going out to local nightspots with her friends throughout the inner city. “My self esteem was low and I wanted to be liked by my friends,” she explained. Hewlett, 48, said for over 20 years she stayed engulfed in drugs, and knew no other life style. Something she described as miraculous started happening to her and she attributes it to God reaching out to her. She says for a long time she knew what she was doing to herself was not right, but said that drugs make you not care. “Gradually I started praying more, singing gospel, and a dying feeling in my heart made me desire to go to church,” she said. Help from a boyfriend, who now she is married to, led the two of them to want a change in their lives.
Pastors Leon and Debra Brown, pastors of Kingdom Builders Fellowship Center, 2707 Rapids Dr,, Racine, WI, hands out food baskets to nearby residents near the church. The church handed out over a 125 baskets last week.

She said because of her and her husband’s deep belief in their faith, they both have been delivered from the grip of drugs and alcohol. The two said that they have never had to seek treatment for their habit. “We gave it to God,” she said with a bright smile. With no experience as a writer, Hewlett most recently wrote a 240 page soft-covered book entitled: Can I Be An Inspiration To You. She said that she hopes that the book reaches someone who is in need of help. “I hope it (the book) is able to pierce their heart, and they will decide that they have tried everything else, but they have not tried God.” She says that there are too many people who believe that they can heal themselves, “but it takes God.” Her husband Charles said that because of her easy writing style, the book will reach a lot of people. “This book comes to you the same way Jesus came here. This is the same platform he used to let people know that you do not have to clean yourself up to come to him, He can do things for you right where you are.” Her paperback edition can be purchased at Amazon.com for $12.47

Conflict Arises Over King’s Holiday In Racine
Jennifer Gallager, left, Managing Editor for the Insider News called for the reinstatement of support for student activities surrounding the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.
Monday evening, Dec. 17, the Racine Unified School District Board held an open session to receive public comments. Numerous citizens, including a significant number of students, spoke about the board’s recent announcement that they have concerns about certain circumstances surrounding the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day event that has been held by district students for the past several years. Specifically, they had been informed that Voces De La Frontera (VDLF), a community organization that has participated in the event by students’ request, is a registered PAC (political action committee). According to sources, this places the school board in the uncomfortable position of funding an event that could potentially be perceived as “political”, which opens them to criticism and potential liability. It was for this reason that the board decided to withhold funding of the event until the matter could be resolved.
When contacted, Kate Werning, youth organizer for VDLF, stated that the organization is a registered 501-C3 (non-profit organization) and not a PAC. Another source states that the board was clearly informed of this but it appears some confusion remains and further dialog is needed. All indications are that the primary source of the confusion that has created this conflict in Racine, is Milwaukee radio talk show host Mark Belling. Reportedly, Belling has an axe to grind with VDLF and has encouraged his listeners to deluge RUSD with “open records requests” about their involvement with the King celebration. If this proves to be correct, it is a sad display of disregard for the integrity of the educational efforts of a neighboring community. A meeting between students and the school board was scheduled for later in the week.
An individual has not started living until he can rise above the narrow confines of his individualistic concerns to the broader concerns of all humanity. Martin Luther King, Jr.
