Wineries of the South:

Chateau Elan Winery & R esort

-Bobby Flay

The first in our W ineries of the South Series brings us to Braselton, GA where the Chateau El an W iner y and Resor t stands in grandeur. W hen you can sleep luxuriously, dine exquisitely, relax your cares away, sip fantastic wines and play all day in one spectacular place, why would you want to be anywhere else? Dipped in the style and grace of a French chateau, and sprinkled with just the right amount of southern charm, this award-winning winery and resort is tucked into the hills of north eastern Georgia, less than an hour from Atlanta. Perfect for a girls' time getaway, a romantic rendezvous, or just to escape and relax on your own, its 3500 acres leave nothing to the imagination. A vision of pharmaceutical entrepreneurs, the late Donald Panoz and his wife, Nancy, Chateau Elan has become a premier destination in the world of hospitality. Having tasted several Muscadine wines (indigenous to the southeast) during a business trip to Georgia, the Panozes were curious as to why other varietals weren't grown in the area. The challenge, they were told, was that other species could not thrive in the region. The Panoz family's plantings in the early 80's focused on such varietals such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet. Chateau Elan now showcases a unique portfolio of almost thirty varieties of wine. Additionally, the estate is home to exquisite accommodations, an elaborate spa facility, a championship golf course and an expansive conference center that is a renowned destination all on its own.

There is nothing typical about astay at Chateau Elan. There's a level of style and relaxation to meet the needs of even the most discerning traveler. A stay at TheInn in always in perfect tastewith a vast array of amenities that combine classic French luxury with the comforts of home. If you really want to sleep in style, upgrade to the expansive and luxurious Governors or Presidential Suites. You could also opt for a two or three-bedroom villa on the estate's championship golf course. Each villa features an open floor plan, with a kitchen, an upscale living areaand LED fireplace. If a massage, afternoon tea and an overnight stay at the Spa sounds intriguing, you can rejuvenate in comfort in accommodations with lavish bathrooms with air jet tubs or a waterfall shower experience. Bundle your stay and include amenities such as wine, golf or breakfast or dinner for two.

Now if those aren't enough options, explore the onsite Hampton Inn and Suites while still enjoying the amenities of the Chateau.

Southern Charm dipped in F rench luxury...

The Versailles Restaurant features a "gourmet American cuisinebuffet", alongside an a la carte menu that has impressed many a taste bud with such dishes as Seared Brown Sugar & Lemon-Dill Cured Salmon and BĂŠarnaiseHazelnut Crusted Veal Milanese.? Located inside the winery, marc's weekly menu spotlights southern cuisine with international flare. Marc now has a large, newly opened bar with a focus on specialty cocktails.

This place gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "food for thought", because you're really going to need time to consider which of their seven noteworthy dining options you will want to take advantage of.

W hat is a spa without a world-class chef and views of a lake as you sip on afternoon tea and nibble on delicious bites after your invigorating yoga class? Chateau Elan's Fleur-de-Lis fits the bill with epicurean breakfast and lunch options. Take a quick trip to Ireland at Paddy's Irish Pub, where you have access to authentic Irish

cuisine. Inside the newly renovated Chateau Elan Golf club is where you can find Sarazen's Bar & Grille. Experience an All-American menu on the open patio, overlooking the lush greens of the 18th hole. The L'Auberge Lounge is closed for now, but will re-open in early September as Louis' House of Bourbon, a contemporary sports bar that will feature upscale pub fare and craft bourbon cocktails that will pair well with its laid back atmosphere. Not in the mood for a seated dining experience? No problem. Relax around the pool and indulge in delicious bites and tasty cocktails from the Le Soleil Pool Bar.

An award-wining winemaker in his own right, Simone Bergese joined Chateau Elan in 2012. A native of Alba, Italy, Simone spent the early parts of his career serving as W inemaker to the likes of Patria W inery in Sicily, as well as the distinguished Firriato W inery. His medal-winning streak kept going after his move to the US with his work with Potomac Point W inery in Virginia. Continuing the mission at Chateau Elan of creating wines that can be enjoyed by all, Simone incorporated several vital changes that would significantly impact the quality of the wines. Some of the changes involved replanting the vineyards to their native species, Muscadine; all while outsourcing classic vinifera grapes from other American regions. And, of course, California was sought out as a prime destination for quality grapes. W ith wines being produced from such AVA's (American Viticultural Areas) such as Paso Robles, Lake County and Yolo County, you experience the diversity of the climate, the soils, and the landscape, which all equate to the work of art in your glass. In his own words, Simone says "It is not just about making or drinking the wine, it is an emotional experience...." And what an experience it will be with such an attractive portfolio of wines to choose from. No matter which varietal is your favorite go-to, or if you are looking for a new adventure, Chateau Elan has something for everyone. Seven wines of your choice are available with Classic and Premium Tasting Flights. If you want to enhance your experience, book a tasting and tour, which is complimentary for overnight guests, with an optional upgrade. As the only certified conference center in America with a fully operational winery and vineyards, Chateau Elan's 40,000 square feet of conference space makes it the perfect place for your business events or your destination wedding. The elaborate facility commands attention with an additional 10,000 square feet of outdoor space with breathtaking views of the vineyards and Chateau in the backdrop. Recently sold to Connecticut-based investment firm, W heelock Street Capital, Chateau Elan is currently undergoing a 25 million dollar renovation, due for completion in November. The renovation will include a complete redesign of guestrooms and suites, restaurants and the resort's grand atrium. Don't let that hinder you from taking a visit soon. It's just a good reason to go back again. Check out their website for the latest seasonal events and exclusive packages.
