editorial 2012. A good year, an Olympic year. Maybe a transitional year, as many are, though this feels a little different. Political, cultural and artistic trends have shifted over the last while internationally and as yet seem to still reside in white space. Somethings have emerged however that just seem to tip the headgear to a new plateau. Next year is set to be big, and goes ahead real early in January. No stalling. Spend your time getting ready over the next few weeks - there will be little time to sleep! 4 - Q4/ December 2012 - XVII

Enclosed are some of yours and our favourites from Two Thousand and Twelve, bought to you right at the end of it. So many great artists in this, the forth and final issue in 2012. Something fresh to tide you over while the western world pauses for yet another outdated tradition. That is if the world dosen`t suddenly end on the 21st. Either way the ride will be a blast. Get on it! Peace -MQ

Micall Parknsun With a wealth of experience, both in the booth and onstage, Parky has firmly established himself as one of the most exciting and dynamic MC’s to emerge from the UK with his captivating stage presence, unmistakable rugged voice and effortless flow. After ``First Second Time Around``, his forthcoming album ‘Me Myself & Akai’ is entirely self-produced and obviously showcases Micall’s skills on the MPC as well as the mic. The first single is droppin’ January 2013 and if recent release `Grade & Liqour` is anything to go by, the beats and flows will be stamped with the usual rugged and straight talking style we have come to expect from this Hip Hop junkie, father of three`s rising output. The launch show is at the infamous Jazz Cafe in Camden with support from Paul White. Keep `em peeled. www.micallparknsun.co.uk www.ynr-productions.co.uk

Since we last brought you an issue of XVII, the home city of many our contributors, Glasgow, has played host to far too many hip-hop gigs than is healthy or indeed usual. Amongst the shows were old school icons, underground legends along with fresh local talent and acts. 2013 is already shaping up to follow suit, so we thought we’d take you through some of the highlights we were present for, a slice of which via Greenock crew, Beats Rhymes & Life with DJ Bunty of The Mixkings the brains behind the BRL initiative. Madina Whilst this may strike you as an advert, strictly speaking, it isn`t. Brighton based designer / animator Madina has struck on a theme, so simple, it has all the markings of an instant classic. There is also great scope for a whole host of new releases, like the JD Stamp hoodie and tee. Fresh. I need doubles of both. Check it out now on the Madina store. A stamp is a distinctive mark or impression made upon something. The ‘GOLDEN ERA’ print honours the kings and queens of hip-hop who propelled the genre from humble beginnings in the block parties in New York to the global phenomenon we see today. So if you thought ‘most of my heroes don’t appear on no stamps’ a few words of advice ‘Don’t believe the hype’.

XVII - Feature Kingdom Of Fear

There was a time, a good few years ago now, that I was listening to nothing but UK Hip-Hop. And whilst thats true for a whole host of heads, being frank - the UK scene has never really, consistently, set the world ablaze as its deep potential and talent suggests, currently overshadowed in the mainstream by other genres, seeing mainly Grime as a vehicle of rap. Even the MOBO Awards have a HipHop / Grime Award. A slash pairing I find more than insulting - but on a business level I can understand it.

"When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro." - Hunter S. Thompson (R.I.P) The state of the scene must have been a present topic, even if an unspoken one, as this concept grew between rapper and producer Jehst, and `openly` mysterious frontman, Kashmere from the quality Y`n`R stable. Within context there could be almost nothing more revolutionary and genre defying as Hunter S. Thompson, the source of inspiration and namesake for the Kingdom Of Fear project. You can easily draw parralels once it`s pointed out, but it`s something that hasnt really happened, until now. An excellent execution of escapism this is the first release in a series forthcoming from Billy Brimstone`s Y`n`R. A mescaline induced certified banger. Born out of a dusty, dank East London studio, Jehst dons his producer hat, dusts of the MPC and digs deep in the crate to take the listener on a journey of ‘inspired thought’ narrated by a voice familiar to many - “He’s a severely disturbed individual” Jehst explains “It’s as if his mind is far away in a strange universe. And he keeps thinking he’s a character from a Marvel comic.”

24 - Q4/ December 2012 - XVII

Best known for Fear & Loathing thanks, chiefly to Depp and Murray, HST`s work Kingdom Of Fear is a collection of writings about Thompson’s past that focuses on the theme of rebellion against authority. Many of the stories are placed in the context of the aftermath of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks and its emphasis on heightened police and military operations. Suddenly the reason behind the selection becomes further apparent, and with the juxtaposition to the music scene in question this drug-fueled fourteen track binge is just the detox we need. www.ynr-productions.co.uk

Bandcamp Yes, it’s a site that has been on the go for a few years now, but this was the year I discovered the simple beauty and power of what is effectively a website plugin, and came round to the opinion that it could be one of the most significant developments in music in the past five years. As a DJ and someone who always wants the best possible audio, I got frustrated with the variable quality of the vast majority of paid sites. Not only that, but these sites also tend to take quite a sizable chunk – between 30% and 50% - of the album’s proceeds. Okay, it is a hell of a lot better than the 2% that artists used to be paid, but there’s still room for improvement. Along comes Bandcamp. Artists (or labels) upload the raw, uncompressed audio files to Bandcamp; the process them to all manner of formats and bitrates, then post on their site. The artist chooses which songs are available for streaming, how they are presented, if they are to be available for download, if they charge for the whole album or if they give away tracks for free. They can set a buy now price, or they can let the listener decide.

DJ Nu-Mark Broken Sunlight series Is it just me, or have the members of Jurassic 5 been on the quiet side since they split in ‘07? They’ve been busy, but aside from Chali 2na`s latest venture, nothing really too noticeable has cropped up. At least it hadn’t until this year, when one half of their formidable production duo decided to get busy, creative, ambitious and experimental (four qualities we at XVII always love artists to have!). Cut Chemist was always the better turntablist, but 2012 has shown that DJ Nu-Mark is the better producer. Early next year sees the release of his second album, titleBroken Sunlight. “So what?” I hear you say. Here’s what; over the course of 2012, DJ Nu-Mark – or Uncle Nu to the more familiar – has put out a new double A-side single every few months. Each collection has been totally free (you just give him your email ad so he can tell you when the next one’s out), includes the single, the radio-friendly version, the instrumental, the accapella AND the drumcapella of each song, and is available in whatever format you care for, pandering to the whim of every DJ, remixer and audiophile out there. This would be pretty good in and of itself, but it’s also the variety of styles, the wall-to-wall quality of each track, and the brilliant collaborations that bring it all together, taking in straight-up party boom-bap, Brazilian instrumental funk and paireddown street poetry.

For my money, Bumpin’ ‘Em All with Bumpy Knuckles (has there been an odder collab all year?!) and Tonight with J-Live are two of the best hip-hop tracks of the best 12 months, both with fantastic videos to complete the package. -CJC

Philladelphian Experiment Somehow I still feel Amhir Thompson AKA ?uestlove is slept-on. Let me be candid, in his branch of music - He is the Godfather. I know Roots fans with a love / hate relationship going album to album in their discography, and even without going through his whole back-catalogue as a drummer, producer and arranger, that alone is sheer Madness. Straight. I`m certain cats will realise their erroneous ways all too late. Same way I feel about almost any of those that essentially carve a new path, most travellers concerned with where it leads rather than the incredible journey that can be had along the way. Ask anyone that truly matters in music about the man and you are bound to hear nothing but praise across so many genres, styles and projects, some really unexpected ones too. The write up is short and direct, slightly metaphorical - if you are a true HipHop / Jazz / Funk / Neo-Soul or just a general music fan, he demands your attention. All killer, no filler. Or rather - ill Fills. No Filler. Along with this issue we are proud to present a celebration of his work from DJ Psykhomantus - A ?uest 4 Love - available for free download and streaming now on 17th Letter channels and Mantus outlets. Get on it. Two 40+ min explorations of ?uestloves incerdible contribution to music thus far. More details at the back. www.okayplayer.com

BY ADRIAN GOMES

Drinking and music have been synonymous with one another since the invention of both. In the final of a four-part series for XVII; Adrian Gomes from bar consultancy 10 Dollar Shake will take a look at some of the colourful periods in history that pull together two of the worlds favourite pass times.

42 - Q4/ December 2012 - XVII

Celebrity Endorsement (Part IV) Drinking has always gone hand-in-hand with music. It’s a goodtime marriage – the staples of any good party (plus the guests, of course). Specific drinks can be tied to an era, reflecting tastes, locality and convenience (for example, the efforts of the Canadian whiskey distillers to flood the American market with hooch during prohibition). Nowadays, you need to look no further than commercial music, in particular hip-hop and it’s subgenres, for a modern day example of era-specific drinks, namely Cognac, vodka and energy drinks. Except this time, it’s the musos, not the distillers, peddling the hard stuff. Celebrity endorsement is everywhere. It makes perfect sense – people like Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs have the fashion labels, the record labels, the bars/clubs…why shouldn’t they be selling the booze too? We’ve all heard Hennessy name-dropped in songs from 2-Pac to Kanye, but have you heard of Mansinthe (Marilyn Manson’s brand of absinthe), Qream (Pharrell’s oddly-named vodka liqueur) or Voli Vodka (Pitbull)? Some of the endorsements are hilarious. Lil’ Jon is the ‘Chief Brand Advisor’ for Crunk Energy Drink – apparently created in 800BC when ‘Horny Goat Weed’ was discovered. Here’s a quote lifted from the website: “Oh Lawd. Peep the

goats gettin’ nasty off the weed. Farmer’s dub the plant after the outlandish sexual behavior of farm animals.” Laugh as you may, the business behind Crunk is Sidney Frank Importers, the company who famously created Grey Goose Vodka and first imported Jagermeister into the States. Dumb bums, they ain’t (Lil’ Jon also owns Little Jonathon Winery, producing such vinicultural delights as Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon and Central Coast Chardonnay. Note: tried neither, doubt I ever will). You have to wonder how Snoop Dogg’s Blast Energy Drink compares sales-wise.

XVII - Q4 / December 2012 - 43

44 - Q4/ December 2012 - XVII

Of course, it’s more reassuring to know that Ludacris actually had a hand in the blending process for Conjure Cognac. Hip-hop has always had an affinity to Cognac, just as it does to Champagne (although the French owners of Cristal courted controversy and claims of racism when they distanced themselves publicly from hip-hop culture – of course, Jay-Z was on hand to steer supporters away from the brand to one he was involved with, Armand de Brignac. Now that’s good timing.). Another French brand signed a ridiculous deal with Sean ‘P Diddy’ Combs, offering the mogul 50% of all profits in a multiyear agreement. The fact that Ciroc Vodka is owned by the largest drinks corporations on the planet (Diageo Plc.) makes the deal even more astounding, as anyone involved in the drinks industry knows how hard it is to get any money out of Diageo (kidding…!). All things considered though, my two favourite drinks brand endorsements are not by musicians, but actors (well, sort of). Ron de Jeremy is a Venezuelan endorsed by porn legend Ron Jeremy (ron is Spanish for rum) and is actually a decent product. The other product is Crystal Skull Vodka and I like this not because of what’s in the bottle, or the fact that Dan Akroyd is the name behind the drink, but the bottle looks sublime. Am I going to conclude this with a positive or negative personal opinion on celebrity endorsements? Absolutely not. However, if you’re fool enough to purchase something because a celebrity was paid to endorse it…sucker! -AG Thanks to Adrain Gomes for this series in 2012 - you can go visit him in Scotland at his own new endorsement, cocktail venue and eatery - The Tippling House - Belmont St, Aberdeen. All the best for 2013. XVII - Q4 / December 2012 - 45

Hailing from Chicago and Maryland raised, Aaron McGruder (born May 29, 1974) is an American cartoonist best known for writing and drawing The Boondocks, a Universal Press Syndicate comic strip about two young African American brothers from inner-city Chicago now living with their grandfather in a sedate suburb, as well as being the creator and executive producer of The Boondocks television series based on his strip. Through the exceptionally intelligent Huey (named after Huey P.
