LOUVER: THE ENVIRONMENT 1 RECLAD PROJECT PROPOSAL

PROJECT BACKGROUND
Environment 1 (EV1) is one of three buildings at the University of Waterloo (UW) housing the Faculty of Environment and hub for environmental research on campus. Built and designed circa 1960s, EV1 is a relic of its time requiring rehabilitation to achieve carbon neutrality. The purpose of this project proposal is to demonstrate that the recladding of EV1 is a costeffective solution to meet the 35% reduction in mega-tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions (MT CO2-e) that the University of Waterloo is committed to achieve by the year 2030.
A quality assessment of EV1 determined that the thermal performance of EV1 was 72% poorer than that of Hagey hall (HH). According to Professor A. Atkins (P. Eng.), EV1 has the poorest building energy performance on campus as EV1 fails to meet a total thermal resistance between R35 and R-45 for exterior walls above grade. It was found EV1 had a total thermal resistance of R-7. UW spends 50 dollars per square foot for each building on campus for maintenance and utility costs regardless of building performance and efficiency.
Coupled with degrading energy performance, increasing operating costs and occupant discomfort, EV1 creates concern over long term energy use. This has led to the unanimous vote for a reclad of the entirety of EV1 s façade by the UW executive committee. The project scope will focus on the north-east corner of EV1, termed as 'Section Red'.
PROJECT OBJECTIVES
The project will support the University of Waterloo’s goal of reducing carbon emissions by 35% before 2030 outlined by Shift Neutral. To achieve this goal, the project must use materials with a higher R-value to increase thermal comfort and reduce building energy consumption.The Recladding renovation to the Environment 1 Building will have three main objectives:
1. Increasing the energy efficiency and thermal performance throughout the building, thus ensuring the temperature always remains constant.
2. Maximizing natural light by employing an increase in WWR 10%-15% will allow for indoor natural lighting reducing use of light sources. This will improve the productivity of students and staff working in the building.
3. Supplementing the building’s energy source using sustainable energy collection via solar panels.
The project is expected to cost approximately 5 million CAD ± 5% based on similar case studies. This estimation excludes government and application fees. The building is expected to have a breakeven of carbon emissions within ten years ± 2 years and a return on investment in less than 25 years. The project is expected to be completed by December 2025.

ADDING SOLAR PANELS THAT ACT AS A SHADING DEVICE CAN BE A SIMPLE WAY TO SOLVE TWO PROBLEMS. ADDING SOLAR PANELS ON THE TOP ARRANGED VERTICALLY CAN MAXIMIZE THE NUMBER OF SOLAR PANELS WE CAN INCLUDE. SOLAR PANELS ARE A GREAT WAY TO INTRODUCE AN ALTERMNATIVE ENERGY SOURCE TO THE BUILDING.
CONS:
EXPENSIVE IF THE BUILDING IS SURROUNDED BY BUILDINGS AND SHADE THERE ISNT ALOT OF DIRERCT SUNLIGHT THUS ADDING SOLAR PANELS WILL NOT BE EFFECTIVE. WILL NEED ADDITIONAL ROOF SUPPORT TO ADD SOLAR PANELS TO ENSURE THE ROOF DOESN'T COLLAPSE.
