Reclaim Your Creativity! RISE UP! Reclaim your time, health and career in style. Why wouldn't you? This is the perfect time to rebrand, invest in your health or apply for that dream job even if it means relocating! Hopefully you've taken advantage of the stay at home orders and you've reclaimed your creativity. Honestly, I needed to. I was having editorial shoot withdrawals. So I took the time to create the Facetime towel series (pg.60) and the Facetime Flower Wear Series (Pg.16) to keep me busy. I think we could agree the year 2020 will always be memorable, but I wanted an opportunity to showcase the beauty of quarantine. In this issue we'll also dig deeper into the unspoken ways fashion creators were forced to entertain themselves (hint my floral milk bath photoshoot,) featured on this page.

This issue is a very unique one. We are very proud to bring you the Summer 2020 edition of Disrupshion, and hope that you are inspired to continue to put your creative talents to good use. Let's start with the special edition cover, I tapped Brazilian, Miami based photographer Luiz Moreira for this iconic cover photo, which helped bring our theme

Utilized resources at home and shot a cool beauty editorial.

Sincerely,

for this issue to life, "In The Black Creator We Trust." Yes, thank you Instagram. The second cover was birthed out of an editorial shoot (Barbie Ting's , pg.80) an Ode' to the underdog. Thank you in advance for flipping through the pages of our Summer issue. I would like to invite you to stay in touch with all things

LIFESTYLE ACCORDING TO A SURVEY WE CONDUCTED IN JUNE 2020, FASHION CREATORS SAY THEY SPEND TOO MUCH TIME ON THEIR CELLPHONES AND THEY ADMIT THEY HAVE SOME CONCERNS OVER THEIR SCREEN TIME.

Add It To Your Summer To Do List!

WRITTEN BY ANGEL NEAL BY DEFINITION, A DIGITAL DETOX REFERS TO A PERIOD OF TIME WHEN A PERSON REFRAINS FROM USING TECH DEVICES SUCH AS SMARTPHONES, TELEVISIONS, COMPUTERS, TABLETS AND SOCIAL MEDIA. LET’S ADMIT IT, SOME OF US ARE SIMPLY ADDICTED TO OUR PHONES. WE EAT AND BREATHE SOCIAL MEDIA. MOST JOBS TODAY FORCES US TO HAVE TO USE TECH DEVICES AS APART OF OUR WORKDAY . AN AFTER A LONG DAY OF WORK WHEN WE NEED DAILY INSPIRATION, WHAT BETTER WAY TO GET THAT THAN ON OUR INSTAGRAM FEED? BEING AN ENTREPRENEUR TODAY YOUR LIFE IS SUFFUSED WITH TECHNOLOGY. WE GET IT. BUT WE CHALLENGE YOU TO ADD A DIGITAL DETOX TO YOUR SUMMER TO DO LIST. OUR BRAINS ALSO COULD ENJOY SOME RELAXATION AND TAKING A SMALL BREAK FROM TECHNOLOGY CAN HELP YOU RECHARGE.

HOW LONG CAN YOU LAST WITHOUT CHECKING YOUR NOTIFICATIONS?

GUIDE TO DOING A Rediscover the DIGTAL DETOX "why" when you pull your phone out

Tech-Free Hours The first step to detoxing is to start off slow and designate tech-free hours. Baby steps, people. You can start by designating a certain time each day that you won’t be allowed to use your phone, watch TV or surf the net and yes that includes using your Apple Watch! A good time is your lunch break or before you go to bed.. You can eventually expand the time range once you get an idea of how you feel after a week of trying it out.

Goodbye PushNotifications First of all, who actually enjoys getting constant updates on their phones? Its distracting! Give yourself a break from disrupting your daily productivity. Its a sure way that you can maintain your focus on things that actually deserve you’re attention. Worldwide news coverage maybe necessary to stay current on but anything else is not essential. One easy fix is to turn off as many notifications as you can live without.

Be Present During Meals Now this one maybe a hard one for some, but put your phone away during meals! Don't even place it on the table, studies have shown it reduces the quality of meal interactions. You know that constant battle where you're eating and you're just waiting for your phone to light up. The greatest gift you can give someone whose sharing a meal with you is by being fully present.

With the daily development of phone features, theres is nothing that your phone really can’t do! With the good stuff that comes along with having a one-stop shop phone. Our phones are also often used to distract, to avoid, or to ignore whatever is happening right in front of us.

PERIODICALLY, FAST FROM ELECTRONICS As a form of self care you owe it to yourself to take a digital break. Especially at a time like this when America just cant get right. Between the constant rage of black lives being unlawfully lost and our normal lives being put on pause in fear for our health, thanks Covid 19. We could all use a massive detox. I challenge you to spend an entire week during your summer with no electronic devices. I know what you’re thinking its impossible, its scary, but its necessary. It can and it should be done. A easy way to do this is maybe plan a staycation and catch up on some reading or my favorite thing, sleep. A fast from electronics forces us to connect with others and ourselves. Trust me, you’re not doing yourself any favors when it comes to productivity if you are constantly on your phone. My iPhone updates me each Sunday on my weekly average of screen time and the numbers are scary! So I will also be challenging myself to a electronic fast from my phone, computers and my addiction of Netflix. A friend also gave me a reality check over a lunch date, in the 30 minutes we had been chatting, I had checked my phone about 8 times. There is no excuse. Let’s encourage each other to limit and modify our dependence on technology. We don’t want to be known as the generation that lost control over how we let tech into our lives. Start today!

PINK LABEL CONGO Le coeur de l'Afrique | The Heart of Africa https://hanifa.co

Riddled with a painful history, the beauty of Congo is often untapped and overlooked. The gentleness, beauty, history, poise, majesty, strength, power, and hope of the Congolese spirit inspired this collection. When creating each piece, I was reminded of the stories my mother told me of the women she knew back home in Congo. Women who suffered great loss but still, mustered every ounce of strength everyday to show up. My hope is that this collection inspires all women to stand tall in their power and like the Democratic Republic of Congo, to use their history, whether pretty or painful — to redesign their future. My country, the land of Congo, is ripe with an abundance of natural resources — the greatest of which are its people — its women. Hanifa presents.... Pink Label Congo.

ONLINE TRENDS

#BLACKDESIGNERS MATTER By Laura Griffin of LaDapStyle The arrivalTravel of the Pink Label Congo collection by means of Instagram live by Hanifa has Internet based media influencers, celebrities, and fans raving about not only the experience but the eyecatching designs. Propelled by the glorious ladies of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and aware of the notable variations in focal Africa. Friday evening of May 22, 2020, in excess of 10,000 viewers watched the Hanifa livestream that gave a top to bottom glance at how a driven crucial mission led to their latest creation. Editorial Assistant of Teen Vogue, Asia Milia, said “I am in complete awe of Anifa’s talent and growth as a designer. From the global narrating, to the attention to detail, to the curves that we really don’t see on a runway, it was a prime experience from start to finish. Hanifa has officially raised the bar for the entire industry.” As vowed, Hanifa gave a virtual fashion presentation with 3D models who displayed pieces from the new collection, some of our favorites the Kinshasa Backless Mini Dress, Orélie Skirt, Veronique Blouse. After this amazing presentation it is clear that the sky is the limit for this designer. Actress Karrueche Tran raved about Hanifa’s debut, posting a clip of the advanced digital design show to her Instagram page, expressing, “I can’t stop watching.” I tuned in and it gave me chills watching these 3D models grace the runway. We’ve become so content with being on site at fashion shows and watching amongst our peers as the garments flow on actual models. As the statement says “Dare to be different”! This was exceptional and an example of fashion disruption, taking thinking out of the box to new heights. Hanifa’s Designer and Creative Director, Anifa Mvuemba, communicated her expectation in

utilizing components of the Democratic Republic of Congo to join into the detail, sewing, and shade of her collection; “The red represents pain, the blue speaks to peace, and yellow represents hope, all shades of the Congo flag.” It is a fact that Hanifa has innovated the fashion business. The contemporary brand has also brought issues to light on the maltreatment, coercion, and constrained work of illicit Coltan mining in the DRC. Coltan is a mineral found mostly in eastern Congo, and when refined, it’s utilized as a capacitor in gadgets like mobile phones and laptops. The unlawful mining and offer of this mineral to American assembling organizations has prompted war, constrained work, and maltreatment of Congolese women and children. Hanifa is utilizing her latest collection to enable people to help families and towns in the Congo. Majority of us around the world may not be well versed in the issues that effect the Congolese people since our lack of knowledge of the culture in a roundabout way adds to the torment and extraction of natural resources. All in all, it is truly amazing to see designers like Hanifa Official ,who hardworking, talented and producing high quality creative designs for a wonderful causes. Hanifa launched the Collette shirt as a social effect crusade to mirror the expectation of Congolese individuals. The brand is in collaboration with an organization with the Responsible Sourcing Network and will give 20% of their Collette shirt to battle unlawful coltan mining and backing under served families. To shop the Pink Label Congo Collection, visit the brands official website and follow them on Instagram,

Meet The Designer Q&A

J’Lysa Wilson

Interview By Angel Neal

You can’t spell summer without swimwear. Despite Covid 19 altering summer and our tropical vacations plans, chances are we’re still excited to at least hit up a beach this summer. Whether its drinks by the pool with the girls or a sandy beach evening watching the sunset with your mate. Don’t fret Clems Swimwear has you covered. As the fashion industry is taking the time to acknowledge more black fashion designers, swimwear often gets less recognition. But not on our watch! Meet designer J’Lysa Wilson, she founded Clems Swimwear back in ........ and the daring luxe swimwear label has already amassed a girl gang fanbase. I got a chance to speak with the designer to speak about her creative process and more about the brand. Read on for all of J’Lysa’s wisdom - and all the ways she wants you to feel confident in her brand. Jlysa, please share a bit of your background with us. What was your journey into the fashion industry? I graduated with a BFA from the Fashion Institute of Technology, I studied Textile Development and Marketing and Fabric Styling. My journey into the fashion industry started as a little girl, I spent time with my late aunt, Clementine Johnson, who was known as the fashionista of the family. She made everything she wore down to her dress slips. My mothers side of the family hosts our annual James & Lizzie Johnson Family Reunion. One year, with the help of my aunt, I designed the outfits, she made them, and the rest is history. How did you become interested in designing fashion swimwear? I grew up in South Florida so I’ve always worn a lot of swimsuits and summer dresses. As a curvy black woman it was a constant struggle to find swimsuits that fit my bust. That coupled with the lack of diversity in fashion, were motivators for me to create Clem Swimwear.

How would you describe Clem Swimwear brand and its aesthetic? Is there anything people find characteristically original about your designs. I design minimal, but I love bright colors. In a world full of nudes and earth tones, you will always find color at Clem. Where do you draw your creative inspiration from? What type of woman do you have in mind when you’re designing? Who is the Clem Girl? J’Lysa: I typically get my inspiration from places I’ve traveled. I recently traveled to Tulum and I was so inspired by the colors, local products inside the shops, art, and just seeing people walking/ what they’re wearing. I love designing colorful over the top items that you can jump on the back of a motorcycle in another country and have an unexpected adventure in. The Clem girl loves to show skin, she is daring no matter her size. How important is finding the right fit? Any tips you’d care to share? The fit in swimwear is the most important aspect, if the swimsuit doesn’t fit right it won’t work. When people are baring it all they want to feel confident, they want their swimsuit to fit them properly. When developing a sample I always begin with my body, where as most brands begin with a fit model. I work from there and I wear all samples throughout the development stage. I can then properly make the changes that I see fit. What type of swimwear do you find most universally flattering? There isn’t a certain style because everyone’s body shape is different. What works for some may not work for others, but fabric that has good stretch helps to flatter any body type.

13 Disrupshion

What fashion era influenced you the most? Why? I probably relate to the 60’s or 70’s the most. Swimwear and accessories were really a look. Slim Aarons captures all of those photos around the world. What has been the most difficult aspect of getting your brand off the ground and how did you overcome it? J’Lysa: Investments - most people can’t pour thousands of dollars into themselves without instant gratification. I scaled back everything from social settings with friends, traveling, and shopping to make Clem Swimwear happen. Any future expansions into resort wear, accessories or anything? Yes!!! Theres a lot of fun resort wear pieces dropping this summer. Swimsuits are my passion, but being a full resort wear brand has always been the goal. What is your personal favorite piece from your line? Bobbie Jean, an open cut thong, which you don’t see very often in the swimwear market because it’s extremely risque. Many love the design, but only a few dare to try. Lets manifest. What celebrities would you love to see wearing your brand? Rox Brown, Renell Medrano, Rihanna What are your beach bag essentials? I’m big on accessories, anything to complete the look. Sunglasses, hats, a ton of jewelry. What role has Instagram and social media played in launching your brand? Believe it or not social media is where it’s at. Social media marketing has expanded my reach to people I may not have otherwise been able to communicate with. I’ve been able to DM and chat with stylists and major influencers in fashion I’ve dreamed of working with and it’s paying off. I’m always excited when someone wants to support my brand, celeb or not. What are you looking forward to in the future? I’m looking forward to Clem Swimwear getting its big break. Despite the unexpected challenges this year, I’ve completed a majority a of my goals. It’s a testament that hard work pays off. I know my big office with a gorgeous view is coming someday.

FOR THE CULTURE

#BlackMagazineChallenge

@THEREALBEEYA @SEVENKNOWS @IAMTHRIFTJESUS

It's more than a hashtag. Over the years the fashion industry keeps telling us we will see a more diverse approach on the runways, in retail stores and yes even magazine covers. We have yet to see the caliber of change we deserve. Now like us there are black publications that cater to our greatness. If you’re not familiar with those magazines I challenge you to educate yourself. At Disrupshion magazine one of our most important missions is to share the talents and the brilliance of black culture in every issue. You don't have to question your seat at the table with us. So today and tomorrow we celebrate you and all that you are. Consider this tribute a love letter for the culture. We wanted to shine light and put a spin on the #voguechallenge and celebrate black culture. Thank you to all who submitted your photos and we hope that you continue to inspire and let your voices, talents and your black shine beautifully.

Meet The Man.... Capturing Beauty & worldwide Attention

“I want my work to reflect on who I am. I want to be remembered for bringing messages of strength and freedom.””

Luiz Moreira Age: 30 Current City: Miami Hometown: São Paulo – Brazil

Let’s just start with an introduction. Who is the photographer Luiz Moreira? What characterizes you most? Luiz Moreira is a young artist in search of fulfilling his dreams and leaving his legacy in the world as a photographer. What most characterizes me I think is my essence, the way I try to pass my messages about the world in my art. You specialize in fine art photography, film and portraits – what is it that you find so fascinating about people and objects? Every photo is a unique moment. I seek for the sensitivity of each moment. The most important thing is to bring my energy and my artistic vision, either in a landscape or in a portrait. I love diversity and people with personality. My role is to bring this essence of people into photography. There’s a closeness in your photographs, an intimacy between you and your subjects. You’ve mentioned you want your work to inspire and reflect the narrative of your universe and feature strong racial themes and social relations in society. Can you describe where that comes from? Is that something that you project? I was born in a country where you have one of the largest communities of black people in the world and also where theres a high rate of social inequality among the population. In Brazil I had few references of works about black artists during my childhood. So today I try to bring a lot of my history and reflect people who inspired me during my life, and project it in my work. I don’t want my work to be empty and superficial, I want my work to reflect on who I am. I want my work to talk about my dreams, my ideology, my ideas and that I can connect with people through it. Lets talk about our cover-- the images are apart of your Santo Negro series. Mixing afro-futurism culture with reality and imaginary. Where did the inspiration come from for the series? What makes me most happy is to see my work breaking barriers and crossing continents. When I see my work being shared on social media by amazing people from all over these people who are sharing my work, I see myself in them and everything in the end

is worth it, because this was a work created to connect with these individuals. After all art is this, it is to unite, to connect and inspire people around the world, and there’s nothing more satisfying than the feeling when I read a message from a person I’ve never seen in my life and who lives in another country writing to me that my work is inspiring the world. I feel so good and happy, it feels incredible! Can you describe the feeling of how well the series has been praised worldwide? From the exhibition during Miami’s Art Basel to the constant sharing on social media. When I see my work being shared on social networks by people from all over the world and at exhibitions I feel a great pride in myself! That’s what art is, it’s connecting and inspiring people around the world. Has Instagram affected your journey? Is Instagram helpful in the development of young photographers? Yes! Instagram is a tool that needs to be used for its own benefit as well as any other social media. In my case Instagram has helped my work to be seen in other countries. I am not famous and I do not have thousands of followers on Instagram, but the number of people who follow me are very relevant. Today I have several artists, musicians, curators, architects, models, stylists, art galleries and normal people who admire me and follow me. I see several young potential photographers on Instagram that have been able to have growth and projection in recent times. So my vision about this is to use this as a tool for showing our talent to the world. Where do you find your inspiration? What inspires you? My friends inspire me, my family inspire me, memories of my childhood inspire me. I think that all my experiences, my social circle and places I frequent contribute to inspiring my work. Especially the diversity and plurality inspire me. How would you like your work to be remembered for future generations? I would like my work to be remembered for bringing a message that praises black people and the Afro culture. I want to be remembered for bringing messages of strength and freedom! What’s next for you? More films? More series? I have two projects in mind that connect with my series Santo Negro. This new photographic series I’ve already started the production of every detail of the look and as soon as this delicate moment of social isolation is over I intend to start this work. One last question, What makes a photograph iconic to you? It needs to be authentic and unique. With the creation of digital photography and social medias, I see a lot of photos being reproduced daily, nothing new. So when you have a very good and strong idea that comes from within and has personality, it has higher potential to become an iconic photo.

Sea Salt Olive Oil Song: "Without You" by Mariah Carey & 528 Hz + Rain Binaral Beats

"Without You" by Mariah Carey on repeat. Add two cups of sea salt, the petals of one dozen roses and a table spoon of olive oil, (optional: add a dash of Florida Water.) If you have sage and palo santo, smudge your bathroom before running your bath. Follow with palo santo. Light 3 white candles and place them around the tub. This bath is not for washing. So, you may want to shower before this ritual bath. As you listen to the words of Mariah's song, I want you to think about anytime (past or present) where you were dispointed in yourself or your life, yet you smiled. Pretending everything was ok. I want you to think of all the negative things you told yourself that added to your sorrow. Now, feel the chorus of this song deep in your heart. "I can't live, if living is without you." I want you to remember that your life is nothing if you are without yourself. Step into the tub and sit down. Now, I want you to release all the negative things you told yourself. Say "I now release ..." With every thought released I want you to rub the rose petals and water all over your body. Next, put on the Binaral beats and close your eyes for a 10 minute meditation. Set your timer. With your eyes close I want you to think nothing. If A thought should come to your mind focus on your breath in and out. When the timer goes off become aware of your body at your own pace. Step out of the bath, pat dry and go to the mirror. Look yourself in the eyes and repeat "I love you unconditional just as you are." This ritual has the best result when you go to bed right after.

“Fashion is a way to express beauty. ”

What is self-love? This term has been tossed around rooms and social media sites for a while now, but what does it really mean? This term, I believe, means learning to manage your thoughts by knowing what your beliefs are about yourself, where did those beliefs come from, and how did you learn them. Self-love is learning to challenge the negative beliefs you have about yourself. Some people struggle for years with negative beliefs about themselves. If you have ever struggled with depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, low self-esteem, low self-worth, or low self-respect you have been in battle with negative thoughts about loving yourself. Self-love focuses on learning who you are right now to help you become self-aware of the bullshit you have playing in your head.

Many spiritualists believe that selfawareness to be surface level work. Most of them encourage to know the effect of real lasting change you must develop a spiritual practice that reprograms the subconscious mind. Unfortunately, people have this inconceivable notion that loving yourself is easy. A lot of people mistake self-care for selflove. They think going to the spa and getting a massage, their nails, their toes or their hair done is loving themselves, but it is merely self-care which is also important. The idea of it being easy to love yourself is so far from the truth that people miss the message and cannot figure out why they are still so depressed, anxious, and envious of their peers. Genuinely loving yourself is work. Take for example the last relationship you were in? Think back to all the negative things your partner did that you overlooked, all the times you forgave them, all the arguments or fights, or maybe the disappointments they caused when they let you down. You loved them, right? Was any of that easy? So, why would anyone believe loving themselves would be. You can end ten to twenty year relationships, but you can never end the relationship you have with yourself. That one will last forever. It is the longest relationship you will ever have. And from a spiritualist perspective it will last for all eternity. I recently visited a fashion blog where there were a series of quotes, two stood out to me. One, “Fashion is my way to express how much I love myself.” And two, “Beauty begins the moment you love yourself.” In the efforts of true love, the first quote I believe can never be true for anyone. A material thing can never express love which is spiritual. On the other hand I do believe fashion is a way to express beauty, but true beauty begins the moment you start to love yourself.

OUT OF THE OFFICE?

MAINTAINING YOUR CREATIVITY DURING THE PANDEMIC? First-hand Experiences from Fashion Creatives Words by Dontaya Boob & Alicia

An abnormal atmosphere has been brewing and demanding that we all, including creatives, change the way we organize our personal and professional lives. The spread of COVID-19 has caused a devastating blow to the world economy and has put a strain on both our health care systems and our finances. On top of that, the second half of the year has not shown any signs of improvement as a next wave of outbreaks sweep the country. The unprecedented effects COVID-19 has had on our world economy have also pervaded the fashion industry. Fast fashion continues to experience great declines, and designer brands are forced to cut back on the large number of seasonal launches.

74 Disrupshion

On the flip side, some fashion brands have innovated the way they connect with consumers. Virtual fashion shows, virtual photo shoots, and a growing social media presence are a few of the adjustments that are picking up traction in this remote space. Even creatives who have seen fewer opportunities to work in person with clients, are finding ways to adapt to this new normal. Disrupshion has gathered firsthand accounts from fashion creatives on the personal and professional decisions they’ve made during this pandemic. Here’s what Sunshine, Celebrity Nail Stylist; Valentina Azizova, Apparel Innovation Designer at Nike; Morgan Vickery, Stylist and Creative Director; and Avon Dorsey, Celebrity Fashion Stylist, had to say:

Avon Dorse; Celebrity Fashion Stylist, @MrDoorsee

At the beginning of the pandemic, did you think you would be impacted in any way? Why or why not? When the pandemic first hit NY, it was my birthday. I was unaware of the drastic effect it would have on all of us- I was shook. I took it seriously none the less and moved throughout the city with caution. Honestly, I had no idea it would be this epic. How have you been affected by the shut of the economy? As a stylist, a lot of what I do requires me to literally be hands-on with clients; meaning, I have to be present in order to get them dressed and assure that their look(s) are perfect. And with the economy closing, jobs fleeting, and the CDC’s guidelines for maintaining social distancing, I’m not able to perform my job- understandably so. What does your new normal look like? On a day to day basis? My new normal involves me catching up on old invoices, processing paperwork, and constantly refreshing my browser looking for new areas of employment. Pre-covid era I had a steady stream of clients calling and emailing, but now it’s been incredibly slow.

How are you maintaining your creativity during this time? Do you feel as if your creativity must be maintained? Maintaining my creativity has involved constant prayer (as always) and meditating on God’s promises. I have always been creative, so I do not think it is anything that escapes me... I have just found new ways to express my creativity since the fashion world is on pause right now. How are you mananging your business during this time? Business is slow, so there is not a lot of upkeep at the moment- outside of updating my social media and my website. Have you been inspired to start any projects or pick up any old ones? I have, but it is top secret (mums the word), lol. What do you have time for now that you did not have in the past? I have swung back around to music, which is what I studied in college. I was studying music and fashion but veered away from music once fashion started picking up for me. How do you think the fashion industry has been impacted by this pandemic? The fashion industry has been paused for the most part because the pandemic took everyone by surprise. So, everything from production, factories being closed, shipping halted, editorial planning sidelined- it is all just frozen right now.

I

Would you like to see the fashion industry change in any way postCOVID 19? I would simply advocate for fashion week (globally) to make some scheduling changes- to be held possibly once a year? Something along those lines. Any honorable mentions of creatives successfully weathering this storm? Culturally, I would say that my homegirl Danielle Young (@TheDanielleYoung), is killing the media game right now. Shoutout to her! How do you see yourself operating your professional and personal life differently after this? Once outside opens back up, I will be living my life to the fullest again. I have always been health conscious and sort of a germaphobe, so I have been able to adjust. I just had to get used to wearing a face mask daily. Any advice for other creatives and/or lessons you have learned? My advice would be- keep God first.

Valentina Azizova; Apparel Innovation Designer at Nike, @goodaziz

At the beginning of the pandemic, did you think you would be impacted in any way? Why or why not? Yes, I thought there would be alot of layoffs in my company. How have you been affected by the shut of the economy? I, personally, wasn’t affected but the entire family back in Europe and my husband here in NYC lost their jobs. What does your new normal look like? On a day to day basis? I have a tremendous amount of zoom calls every day. I set up a small desk in my living room and I am basically glued to it from 10AM till 8PM every day. Also, my job shifted slightly due to the fact that we cannot go out and meet people. It’s all on zoom now and it feels there is a lot more administrative work to do as well as doing more Keynote presentations, writing tons of emails etc. How are you maintaining your creativity during this time? Do you feel as if your creativity must be maintained? All creative research shifted online. If you got inspired by an exhibition in the past, you are now re-looking at your art or design books that you had at home (if some of us had any) or you just look up everything online.

76 Disrupshion

Have you been inspired to start any projects or pick up any old ones? Absolutely. I had a lot of time to rethink things generally, which led me to pick up older projects I have not been motivated to do before. What do you have time for now that you did not have in the past? Speaking with friends in other parts of the world that I never had time for due to time differences etc. I also have more time to read now. How do you think the fashion industry has been impacted by this pandemic? It has been impacted heavily. Although I am sorry for people who lost jobs etc., I think it is not a bad thing that happened to the fashion industry. We now have the chance to rethink structures that were not working anymore. We will strive for more sustainable practices, justice in the workplace, find new ways for improving supply chains etc. How do you see yourself operating your professional and personal life differently after this? I have always been a huge advocate of working remotely when possible. The world is getting more and more connected and 9 to 5 in an office for a creative is not only hard but also an outdated idea. I hope that moving forward and even if the cities will fully reopen, I hope to have more flexibility in my professional life.

Would you like to see the fashion industry change in any way postCOVID 19? As I mentioned before, the change was necessary. In the past at least five years, the pressure from the consumer was enormous. You could not maintain the business as you had 10, 20 or 30 years ago. You had to change as a company. A lot of high-end companies were overshadowed by newcomers and small brands who put all their emphasis on sustainability, affordability, and inclusion. The phase of adaptation has begun not only for high end but for big manufacturers and other large fashion brands. Any honorable mentions of creatives successfully weathering this storm? I won’t call out names but every business whether small or big which could adapt in terms of: setting up a functional digital presence and consumer experience; meaningful product line (sometimes it means reducing and concentrating on the essentials etc.) and collaborating with other partners whether its other brands or supply chain. Any advice for other creatives and/or lessons you have learned? Now I think it is time to break old structures and if you have the privilege to be in the position where you can make change, you must use it. Rethink product, rethink your way of working, rethink what is meaningful in times like this.

Morgan Vickery; Stylist/Creative Director, former Associate Market Editor at Flaunt Magazine, @morganvickery.

At the beginning of the pandemic, did you think you would be impacted in any way? Why or why not? At the beginning of the pandemic, I knew it would impact me financially, especially as an associate level creative in independent print media. Being immune-compromised, I also knew I had to get out of my home in New York City, early on, to avoid crowds and live more comfortably with family in isolation. How have you been affected by the shut of the economy? Print media was inevitably going to be disrupted, therefore my job is in high risk. I had been wanting to pivot towards independent work and just needed a push, but under these circumstances, come new financial setbacks. What does your new normal look like? On a day to day basis? I spend most of my time indoors or in the backyard under the tree. Online, I’m staying connected with friends, family, and the community, finding new work opportunities, refreshing and refining my application skills. Most importantly, educating myself in new ways on racial injustice and oppression within governments and industries and driving the conversation forward within my sphere of influence. Offline, I’m reading, meditating, cooking, juicing, gardening, photographing, smoking, stretching, and so on; enjoying simple pleasures.

Professionally, I find it urgent to hold people and corporations and governments responsible to build a new future for this industry.

Sunshine; Celebrity Nail Stylist, @pipbuzzz.

At the beginning of the pandemic, did you think you would be impacted in any way? Why or why not? I knew I would be affected. Being in the business of face to face and hand to hand contact was certainly going to have a huge impact on my business. Women love the upkeep of their nails, and I was going to miss seeing my clients and keeping their nails intact. My clients have also been impacted when it comes to their nail care. How have you been affected by the shut of the economy? I am in the process of looking for a home to purchase, and that process must be put on pause for a bit. Being self-employed and having my small business makes it hard to save money when you are not working. You cannot save what you’re not making. I am managing but the house hunt is on hold for now. What does your new normal look like? On a day to day basis? My new normal is working out more because the kitchen has become my best friend. Keeping in touch with friends and family with Zoom is pretty interesting. I do my to do list before noon, I read a lot more, come up with different business ideas, practice d’jing, which is my new thing that taking it one day at a time What do you have time for now that you did not have in the past? I have more time to read, practice my skill and sleep..

78 Disrupshion

How are you maintaining your creativity during this time? Do you feel as if your creativity must be maintained? Creators really never lose their creativity. My mind is always going. This down time has allowed me to get some things started and revised which has been a blessing in all of this. It allowed me to figure out how to sustain my business during this time and for when this thing hits again. How are you mananging your business during this time? I had to think quick because with being a celebrity manicurist everything stopped. No travel, no photo shoots, no glam, no clients. However, I made a pretty quick pivot. I started to make custom press-on nails as a self-care alternative which provides clients with some normality. I sent an email to all my clients, then posted a notice on Instagram and it had a great response. I was pretty fortunate because the website was already published. I just had to add the e-commerce store. I went full speed ahead after that. I had been planning to set the store up with different products for a while, yet there was a bit of procrastination on my part. Pipbuzzz To-go is an on-site mobile grooming service that goes to offices and provides manicures and massages. This down time has allowed me to fully focus on the store aspect of the business and now www.pipbuzzztogo.com is up and running as an on-site mobile grooming spa, as well as an on the go, necessity store. Selling press on nails, PediCare kits (which are awesome) beauty cases, T-shirts, art nail brushes and other items that are coming soon. I want to have a dual interest for the professional and service client. Have you been inspired to start any projects or pick up any old ones? I just updated some old ones and added a new one. Practiced my d’jing more. DJ Dnice inspired me to do better. So, that has been a lot of fun. I plan on using that skill a lot more moving forward..

How do you think the fashion industry has been impacted by this pandemic? The fashion industry is impacted, but I do not think as much as others. People can still shop online. Those that are still working can still shop, not that they have anywhere to go in their new digs, but they can catch some great sales. I am sure some designers are suffering and so are their staff because they are out of work. It is unfortunate for a lot of people. Any honorable mentions of creatives successfully weathering this storm? I have a few honorable mentions to creatives I see making things happen. @bornbeautician started selling hair care products to help maintain her client’s hair. Lisa Logan with @thenailsuite is a manicuristwho started making oregano soap. I purchased it, and it is great. Arms Atlantic, making T-shirts. Alethia Clayton, hair and makeup artist, started making masks. @nikkinelms, the hair guru, has “walk-in Wednesday” on IG. The beauty industry really stood up and figured it out. What can you expect from creatives! How do you see yourself operating your professional and personal life differently after this? I‘ll be a lot more careful, for a few months, of my surroundings. Drive my car more. Professionally, I already did the safety procedures while working, must add wearing a mask for a while. Any advice for other creatives and/or lessons you have learned? Take this time to expand on whatever it is you were thinking of doing. Learn to save more and think of the future business wise. Look at what people needed or are doing during this time that you can possibly help with and or make an income from it. If you are a writer, write that book, or if you’re a dancer, make up an exercise routine But always remember, in every storm there is a rainbow afterwards. Keep positive and faithful as this too shall pass.

Talented singer, songwriter, outspoken social activist and a fashion disruptor in the beauty and fashion industry. Each year she raises the bar when it comes to her look and visuals. I love being inspired by over the top creations that have a history and depth far beyond just what is being seen. Solange's project "A Seat at The Table" inspired the culture and all aspects. Her SNL look was a wake up call for us to get back to our roots. What better way to do that then to start with the culture of black hair. This is my tribute to her but also an appreciation for black creators.

RISE UP

RECLAIM Your TIME, HEALTH and CAREER In Style!

Words By Angel Neal

TIME!

We all rejoiced back in 2017 when Maxine Waters fiercely said she was reclaiming her time! As she should and guess what so should you! We can be so infused in what society wants us to give our time to! I don’t know about you but I’m tired of wasting my time and not living up to my full potential. Between our jobs, side hustles that have turned into full time careers, to our dreams of meal prepping, fitting in gym time at least three times a week and trying to have some sort of a social life we honestly don’t have any time to be wasted. So how can we maximize each moment? I thought you’d never ask. 1. Schedule Your Tomorrow! Plan it out, write it down. Creating a to-do list really helps with holding yourself accountable for completing weekly tasks on your agenda. 2. Treat Yourself One Day Out The Week! No I’m not saying go buy those expensive luxury sneakers you’ve been eying since February. But something more relaxing like, take a solo walk, indulge in a bubble bath, have a glass of wine with no technology distractions and if you need to speak with a therapist but definitely make time for self-care. 3. Master The Art of Saying “No!” At some point we may all struggle with this one. But if 2020 has taught us anything, it is that time is Precious! If you’re on the fence about going out with a coworker after work for a drink, say no. If a friend keeps asking you for business advice but its interfering with you running your own, guess what say NO. 4. Ask for Help! Just as much as lack of time can be a burden so can trying to do too much by yourself. Maximize your time and preserve your energy. There are people out here that would be willing to help alleviate some of your burden but you have to be willing to reach out first. If you must slide in those DM’s. It worked for me.

Health!

If you are battling a health issue in silence remember that whatever it is it does not own you its just apart of your story. No one ever wants to suffer with an illness of any kind. Feeling drained, overweight and simply unenergetic? If you answered yes, the next question is well what are you going to do about it? The first thing anyone will tell you is you need to workout, you need to eat better, but its so much more than that. Reclaiming your health means taking control in the power of your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Just start! Here are a few things you can do to reclaim your health. 1. Hydrate Your Body! Water, water, water! We need water to cleanse our bodies daily. According to health officials the appropriate amount of water to drink in ounces will = .66 x your body weight then divide by 8 (there are 8 ounces in one cup) and that will tell you how many cups you should drink a day. In addition you should also keep your skin hydrated and moisturized. Invest in some good natural skin products that compliment the type of skin you may have (oily, dry, ect..) 2. Boost Your Energy! Try to eliminate sugars from your diet and tap in 30minute cardio a day or at least a 30 minute walk. When you start to eliminate those sugar cravings and eat nutritious food, you allow yourself to reach and maintain a naturally healthy weight. 3. Let Happiness Be Your Foundation! When it comes to being mentally stable I believe it starts with waking up each day and choosing to be positive. Being happy promotes a healthy lifestyle, combats stress and can reduce pain well at least thats what the experts tell us. But its true, how often do you see happy people depressed? Happiness can lengthen our lives and give us the courage we need to reclaim our time, our career and our health in style!
