Letter from the Editor This year really flew by. All year I kept my eyes and ears open for fashion inspiration from the streets of New York City to the runways of Milan and I took Disrupshion along for the ride. The winter 2018 issue was fun creating, majority of the editorials I scouted the talent and put my creative director hat to good use. I wanted to highlight up-in-coming creatives who have that hunger to create just like I do for Disrupshion. The Power of Next, means just that, having the power, the talent and the drive to create your own narrative in the fashion industry. All it takes is one person to believe in your potential, remember that. Disrupshion will continue to evolve, and each issue will be better than the last. As the new year approaches, I’m looking forward to continuing my passion of giving creatives an opportunity and a published platform to inspire and disrupt the industry. Make sure you’re following us on our social media. Have a beautiful holiday season! I hope you enjoy our Winter issue, share it! We look forward to having your work featured in our pages one day. Keep disrupting!

Meet Ashley When did you first start modeling? I started when I was 15. I did a hair ad for a company and the photographer for that company later started shooting me as his muse. It was a great opportunity for me to learn the art of posing and to have personality in front of the camera. What has been your favorite project so far? I would definitely have to say being a model for the Project Runway Franchises. It was a dream come true to be a part of such a respectful show. Everyone works so hard on that show and Heidi Klum is a bad mamma jamma! What model would you say at this moment is disrupting the industry? Inspiring it? I would say Winnie Harlow, Adwoa Aboah and Sabina Karlsson. The standards in the model industry are being broken by these women and it’s refreshing. I hope to see more models doing the same. Whats your dream model gig? I’m getting more into acting at the moment and would love to host a fun TV show. For modeling, I have so many! A Macy’s commercial would be fantastic. I was born to do a commercial like that. I would also have to say Victoria Secret. I’ve watched the show since I was a child and Naomi Campbell walking like a goddess was inspiring. I’m actually working on my fitness now so that I can audition in the near future. I’m going to tell my agent to hop on that! What are your top three favorite fall/winter wardrobe necessities? I’m not going to lie and say that I am the most fashionable during winter. I lean more towards the wrap- my- body- in- several -layers- to- be -warm- chic. But my three necessities would have to be my heat tech vest from Uniqlo, my black H&M beanie and my long, black trench coat from a store I can’t even remember now but I’m positive that it was on sale. Any advice for the little girl at home that wants to model one day? Truly learn the craft. Taking selfies on social media does not make you a model. Learn the craft. Read books on fashion, watch models from the 70s to 90s on the runway and in photo shoots. And Most importantly be humble. Even if you don’t book a job. Stay persistent and positive and the moment will present itself to you. I’m definitely an example of that. 7

Meet Keely
When did you first start modeling? I was first scouted when I was 13. I was a little hesitant to join the industry because of my focus in school but I ended up signing with an agency at 15 and have been able to persue both ever since! What has been your favorite project so far? My favorite shoot so far was for Forever 21 and Kodak’s new collaboration. I shot with my friend Warren Elgort in South Hampton this past summer and one of the photos was chosen to be on Forever 21’s billboard Times Square! It was a really gratifying and exciting moment for me. What model would you say at this moment is disrupting the industry? Inspiring it? Currently I’m really inspired by Slick Woods and the work she did while she was pregnant. My mum was a model as well and has said that in her generation it was rare or taboo for models to continue their work while carrying a child. I think her work was beautiful and celebrated women’s bodies and pure human form. Whats your dream model gig? My dream model gig is to be a part of New York Fashion Week! What are your top three favorite fall/winter wardrobe necessities? My top 3 fall/winter wardrobe necessities are definitely comfy oversized sweatshirts (I always look for vintage ones at thrift stores), some cool sneakers that add color to your outfit, and warm-toned lip tint. Any advice for the little girl at home that wants to model one day? Always stay true to who you are. It’s easy to compare yourself to other models in the industry, but you start to notice people who are making it are the ones that are expressing themselves authentically. Don’t wait, you got this!

Meet Jill
When did you first start modeling? I first started modeling in the beginning of 2018, had my first shoot in January. What has been your favorite project so far? My favorite project so far has been this one!! Working with Disrupshion Mag because I love being able to work with makeup artists/stylists/models and producing multiple different looks in only one shoot!! It was so much fun and nothing but positivity! What model would you say at this moment is disrupting the industry? Inspiring it? I would say Slick Woods... While she was pregnant she was still doing her thing!! Let me mention how she walked NYFW for SavagexFenty and then went to have her baby right after...The defnition of DISRUPSHION! Whats your dream model gig? VS fashion show of course! What are your top three favorite fall/winter wardrobe necessities? Black booties, teddy coat and big sweaters. Any advice for the little girl at home that wants to model one day? Dream big & work hard!! Remember why you want to do this, who it’s for and where you want to be in the future...let that be your fuel to get you to your goals!

Meet Jani
When did you first start modeling? I first started modeling early last year. On New Year’s day of 2017 a photographer spotted me on a bus, said he loved my look, and asked if I wanted to do a photoshoot. At that time I had a green bob haircut, giant nerd glasses, and Converse that were supposed to be white. I didn’t understand what about my look struck him but I gave it a shot anyways. After our first shoot, I felt I’d found my calling. What has been your favorite project so far? My favorite project so far is the Studio189 SS19 Fashion Show. It was the very first show I walked as a signed model and I got posted to Vogue Brazil the same day. I also got to meet a few celebrities such as Rosario Dawson, Maxwell, Naomi Campbell, and Alicia Keys. What model would you say at this moment is disrupting the industry? Inspiring it? Jazelle Zanaughtti, also known as UglyWorldwide on Instagram, is a model I’d say is not only inspiring the fashion industry, but also her fans. Her unique style challenges today’s beauty standards in the industry and everyday life. Whats your dream model gig? My dream job is walking for Miu Miu. I love their simple, stylish designs. I’m very picky with the things I wear but I feel like I’d wear anything on the brand’s site. What are your top three favorite fall/winter wardrobe necessities? My top three favorite fall/ winter wardrobe necessities are big, cozy sweaters (that’s a must), furry boots, and sweatpants. Any advice for the little girl at home that wants to model one day? Honestly, just be confident. Don’t fuss trying to compete with others’ looks because at the end of the day, your look doesn’t matter; your confidence does.

The Stylist. The Creative Director. The Brand Our Editor-in-chief got to catch up with thee man of the hour and this interview is near and dear to her heart because Roderick was one of thee first stylist to believe in Angel’s talent. Hawthorne got his start in the trenches leaving a career in the armed forces and following his heart to the world of fashion. He can easily be nicknamed the “Superman” of fashion being that he’s never done things the usual way. Putting him in a box is something you definitely need not do. He’s had the opportunity to travel the world and style some of the biggest style influencer’s, like Asap Rocky for example. These days he’s managing models across the world and his work is being featured on 14
coveted fashion magazines in not only the United States but internationally. Roderick Hawthorne, Disrupshion magazine celebrates you.
Interviewed By Angel
DM: Styling has become such a popular career, but its never been just about putting outfits together. What skills must one have to become a stylist? Rod: I think that being a stylist comes with naturally having an EYE for it. Most people think that buying a bunch of designer things and wearing them all together is style, when in fact that can never be farther from the truth. You can be poor and have great style, you can be rich and have great style as well but its normally not the case, lol. I think you have to be able to express what you

are trying to convey. I think you need perseverance and you need to be disciplined and hard working. DM: What other areas besides fashion do you need to understand to make your job as a stylist and creative director work? Rod: I think to make these things work you need to be able to understand culture and understand how to predict trends and it comes with again having an eye and the foresight. Being very versatile in what I consume on a daily basis from bad TV to art, to short films, to music, to movies, to simply taking a walk and being able to gain inspiration from all places helps me in what I do. DM: How has the transition been from stylist to model casting director? Rod: Well is wasn’t really a hard transition as I had some what been doing this with out pursuing it fully until 2018 as another stream of income. And it actually has helped in the building blocks of other areas of my career, like being a stylist and model manager. DM: You recently launched RHSEVEN , a casting and business management company. What are some goals you want to accomplish with the company? Rod: I launched RHSEVEN to be able to offer diversity in options given for shows, editorials and campaigns. It will strictly focus on the placement of the under represented in the industry. On the business side will represent people on special occasions where it comes to the development of their business. DM: You’ve been able to style some of our favorite celebrities and models and work with really cool major brands. What has been your favorite project so far? Rod: I think my favorite project was flying to London to shoot the cover of L’Officiel Hommes Kazakhstan with actor Luke Evans. We rented out this amazing AirBnB that was this pink house in Notting Hill. We shot inside and outside, it was an amazing experience because I casted him and styled him. DM: At Disrupshion we’re always looking for creatives who inspire and disrupt the fashion industry. You’ve done just that with your career. Any advice for those looking for a career in the fashion industry? Rod: Yes, Stay Away! Lol, just kidding. I would say do your research! Know how to network! This industry is all about who you know and who can vouch for you. Your name is everything! Be hungry don’t ever approach this industry with a none hungry mentality. This industry is very cutthroat and will chew you up and spit you out.

Power of Next
34
Disrupshion Magazine presents our class of 2018, the models we feel have the power to be fashions Next “It”Girl. There is no handbook for being in the spotlight, but in an industry dominated by model favoritism these models are changing society’s narrative of the “booked and busy model.” With 100% control of their careers, majority of them are self represented. The winter issue is dedicated to the next generation of models who create their own narrative. Get inspired by our girl gang and update your wardrobe with Mistletoe-worthy style that will never dim your shine.

Bronte Laurent, based in Brooklyn draws in inspiration from the 90’s when it comes to her design estheic. Creating handmade sensual pieces for the confident timeless woman.
66
DM: What sparked your interest in fashion design? Bronte: My interest in fashion sparked as a child. I spent many nights watching my grandmother put on her slip dresses which grew my obsession with silk, satin, and lace. Then there was the daily trips after school with my mother to Marshall’s that I began to study textiles. Fashion has always been my first love! DM: Are You self taught or did you study fashion design in school? Bronte: I am self-taught. I began my side hustle in high school distressing denim and bleaching items but it wasn’t until I moved to Brooklyn in my early 20s that I picked up my first sewing machine. DM: What are you fascinated by at the moment and how does it feed into your work? Bronte: I’m currently fascinated with the African Diaspora. It wasn’t until my latest collection was complete
that I realized how much of my interest in it poured into my designs. From the colors to the patterns I used, I can see goddesses like Yemaya and Oshun, I’ve been fixated on in every design. DM: What role do you think social media plays in fashion today? Bronte: Social media is a tricky one for me, I have a hate love relationship for it. Since I’m running an e-commerce site for my brand I do have to force myself to engage daily. However, I think the role it plays on fashion today is its global connection. It’s opened a huge door to give fashion designers like myself a platform and I really appreciate social media for just that. DM: What has been your biggest fear since you took the leap to start your own clothing line? Bronte: My biggest fear was failing. I wasn’t sure if I would have the money or proper tools to actually keep designing. Also, time wasn’t on my side with working two jobs trying to afford the big city. But with a mix of passion and consistency I went for it! DM: What is your favorite part about being a fashion designer? Bronte: Gosh, my favorite part? Definitely between watching the reaction on others faces when they put on my designs and the warmth I feel physically having the design in my hand a million sketches later, lol. DM: How do you want women to feel when their wearing your designs? Bronte: When I define a woman, I think sensual, comfort, warmth, bold, nature, strength, rebellion, love. That’s exactly how I want women to feel in my clothing. Ultimately my mission is for women to feel comfortable! DM: Theres so much pressure for designers to come out with their greatest collection season after season. Young designers don’t get cut any slack either. You don’t play by those rules though, you create when the time is right. What influenced your most recent holiday collection? Bronte: You’re’ so right. I’ve honestly never been confined by society’s rules on fashion. I feel no pressure when it comes to producing a line for fashion week or riding the trend wave. I work and produce at my pace and deliver when I feel like I’ve perfected my vision. My most recent holiday collection was influenced by a big
move I made to London last year. After spending half a year there I found myself missing the sun. The sun. Something I never had to miss was suddenly craved. So I made my way to Lisbon, Portugal under the sun and the sketches began to pour from my fingertips which definitely brought tropical vibes to this collection. DM: How do you feel about the influx of female designers? Are women in your opinion underrepresented as creative directors in fashion? Bronte: I feel like there’s an influx of female representation in so many areas but were doing a great job at kicking down doors. All of my favorite designers right now are female so I’m in awe. However, I’m awaiting the day I see more black women like myself being represented. DM: How do you see your brand expanding in the future? Bronte: I think in the future anything is possible. I have so many plans to get my brand in stores I admire, like Only Hearts, Needs, Open Ceremony, and ect.. Seeing women of color who act as a role model for me is important for my brands expansion. Oh collaborations, lots of collaborations! DM: Any words of advice for creatives ready to take a leap and get into fashion? Bronte: Jump! Just jump straight into
it. I’m not trying to make it sound easy. Jumping is the hardest step but once you do it stay passionate and consistent and the universe will open door after door for you. This I know for sure.

The Best of As 2018 comes to an end its time to say farewell in the best way we can think of: highlighting the most memorable fashion moments this year. We’d liked to think 2018 proved to be more than fascinating. Of all the gowns that hit the most popular red carpets this year, the Met Gala was definitely the most talked about. Oh, Rihanna, she never disappoints causing quite the attention in her rendition of a fashion forward pope it definitely complimented the theme “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination. Jennifer Lopez, Zendaya and Solange were also on everyone’s Best Dressed List.
80
September New York Fashion Week all eyes seemed to be on Cardi B & Nick Minaj. The ladies not only went viral for their red carpet looks but for a feud that took a turn for the ugly at the Harper’s Bazaar Icons Party. Bella Hadid rocked a nude see-through catsuit at the event that also had people talking.
A historical win for black women in fashion this year, being featured on the September covers of 12 top fashion magazines most popular fashion issues.
Unproblematic and fashion forward we stan’d for Evan Ross and Ashlee Simpson as an “it couple” in 2018.
2018 Earlier this year, #Beychella had the Beyhive causing all the frenzy as the historic moment led to a Balmain collaboration that offered fans a chance to channel their inner Yonce and got your bank account in formation ranging from $290 to $1,790. All the proceeds went to the United Negro College Fund, talk about Boss Moves.
81
2018 Memorable Runways
Virgil Abloh brings rainbow to the runway in his Louis Vuitton debut show during Paris Fashion Week. Abloh came into the fashion world under the wing of Kanye west and now sits atop the menswear division of one of the biggest luxury fashion an acessories companies in the world. If any designer was goals this year it had to be Virgil, #BagSecured Louie bag that is.
Moschino’s anticipated collaboration with H&M did not disappoint the loyal consumers of the logo-happy brand. Selling out in a matter of minutes, “Cartoon couture,” as Scott calls it, is just one element the runway showcased. Moschino-isms, from blingy chain-link embroideries on black leather, for only the most die-hard, to shapely stonewashed denim pieces, easy sweats that mash up the MTV and Moschino logos, and puffers in Crayola brights or metallic sequins with broader appeal were up for grabs.
Color! Shades! Shapes! Fluidity! So disruptive. Can you imagine living in Prabal Gurung’s festive utopia beneath his rainbow of Buddhist prayer flags hanging from the ceiling center stage? Well his S/S 2019 presentation gave us all the feels. Clothes for both women and men (a first for Gurung, and not the unisex clothes of other runways, but pieces tailored for male bodies) were cut to cling and came with strategic cutouts. 82
Memorable Moments Meghan Markle kept it classy in a custom dress designed by Givenchy’s artistic director, Clare Waight Keller for the royal wedding of the year. Kim Kardashian West started the year in a fashion uproar when she posted her luxurious Louis Vuitton trashcans. Nicki Minaj is photgraphed in the biggest logo-happy designer of this year, Fendi Mania!

The hosts are confirmed, Lady Gaga and Harry Styles – both known for their very over-the-top approaches to style – taking on the role. They will be joined by tennis star Serena Williams and Alessandra Michele, the creative director of Gucci. The brand will also be sponsoring the event.

The British creative is launching her own YouTube channel to share beauty tutorials and styling tips with her fans and followers, she has revealed. “This is a new chapter right now. I can put my foot on the gas and do everything that I’ve wanted to do for a long, long time,” Beckham.
Naomi Campbell opens up in new YouTube series
