loom where you are planted! Pretty much fashion creatives. I stand by this saying. Although fashion week is my favorite time of the year spring & summer in general will forever have my heart. When the weather is warm you can really see people take risks with their fashion and street style. The S/S runway seasons are where I get a lot of my inspiration, fashion really blooms. Just like our muse for this issue, Ming Lee Simmons who has blossomed from the little girl we saw strutting on the Baby phat runway with her top model mother Kimora Lee Simmons. Today, Ming is “Very Much Something” she grew up to be a beautiful, funny and a rising fashion creative in her own right. With the reboot of Babyphat, Ming will play a major role on the creative director side all while juggling studying at New York University. This issue I really wanted to showcase more fashion, more editorials featured from creatives locally as well as international. So, with that, read on and I hope when you put this issue down you’ll feel inspired to do your own blooming whether it be creatively, mentally, or psychically. We know what you’re thinking are
biker shorts really a thing? The answer is yes! Every “it girl” needs them in their summer wardrobe. Well as we know Kim Kardashian West has been sporting the look since the beginning of 2016 and we’re guessing the rest of the fashion world has finally decided to embrace it. The biker shorts trend popped up on many runways from S/S 2019 and streetstyle stars are giving fashion girls heavy outfit inspiration. We’re not quite sure of the longevity of the trend but we’re ready to ride out this spring.

her plan on taking over the fashion industry or anything else she puts her mind to. Ming and I got to catch the Laquan Smith runway show together this past February during New York fashion week. She admitted to me she was shy. But the young woman I met that night was anything but bashful. She is funny and charismatic both of us “oo’d and ahh’d as we exchanged ideas for the cover shoot. Fast forward to a beautiful rare sunny day in early April in Brooklyn- shoot day. Simmons arrives to set rocking comfortable sweats, Chanel sneakers, a gifted new season Fendi bag from her mother and a woman’s best friend next to diamonds and good foundation, her dog Kimchi. Excited and ready to start the day, she turns on her creative director hat as she sits down in the makeup chair to discuss ideas with me about the mood board. ‘I joke with her that

Ming-- on Baby Phat reboot. “The brand’s message is the same: uplifting women of all backgrounds and communicating that nothing is out of reach.”
most celebrities aren’t so hands on, but she has a really good eye for conveying a story through her images, so I didn’t mind. After all, fashion and taking charge is in her DNA.’ Ming smiles. “It’s no secret I grew up around fashion. I was front row, backstage, on set-- all of that. She says. “We were a fashion family. We were a music family, so I was forged in the lifestyle arena and that probably did influence my interests. She continued. “At the same time, growing up, I was told if I put my mind to something, I could achieve it. So I’ve wanted to be everything 50
from a doctor to a veterinarian to an attorney. I had a broad set of interests and still do to this day.” Recently Ming announced the reboot of Baby Phat on her Instagram, which got all the blogsites and fashion lovers excited. As she’s getting her hair done I try to get the scoop on whats to be expected from the brand to make it more appealing to today’s generation. “My mom, sister and I are working handin-hand on this reboot,” she shares with Disrupshion while Seven preps her hair for the first look. “My sister and I have a different sensibility generationally,
so the aesthetics and tastes and interests are a little different. But at its core, the brands message is the same: uplifting women of all backgrounds and communicating that nothing is out of reach.” Ming has had the opportunity to be raised bicostal in New York City and Los Angeles, so her personality and style shows the flair of both. “NYC and LA have different vibes in almost every way. But lately, I notice that girls everywhere just want to be comfy,” she says,” “so theres an element of comfort and ease in the way I dress. The same is true of girls that I meet all over the world. But I do find myself changing up my style as I move from coast to coast. As we take the shoot outside, in tourist central in Williamsburg, Ming is stopped by onlookers asking to snap photos of her and with her. As she stops the shoot to get a NYC hot dog, we discuss the best fashion advice shes ever received. “It’s okay to wear a trend but don’t let the trend wear you. Thats a surefire way to remain authentic, comfortable and feel great. When it comes to must have wardrobe pieces for summer MingMing has other essentials in mind. “I know you asked about wardrobe and styling must haves but I prefer to focus on the true essentials,” she laughs. “A bottle of water, plenty of sunscreen and optimism.” Thats our girl!
