2020 is the year of the Rise & Shine!

Starting a new decade really inspired me to want to do more. To be better. EXPAND, INSPIRE, CREATE. Those are my goals moving into the new year. Every creative around me I need them to be on the same page. Thats why we named this issue "The Rise and Shine." It feels like a rebirth. I wanted to higlight models and fashion creatives who are creating their own opprtunties and not waiting for anybody else to do it for them. Boom, came the birth of double beauty covers for the winter issue. I wanted to convey a different kind of feel with each cover. Athena's cover I wanted to be fun and powerful. It was inspired by the fashion brand Area's S/S 2019 fashion week runway presentation. For Acacia's cover I wanted something that was fierce and seductive. Well you can never go wrong with Balmain and a little disco. Inside the issue I'm dropping some gems to get all my fashionistas prepared for New York Fashion Week. Let me know what you think about the issue and make sure you subscribe to our newsletter on the website. This year will be major for Disrupshion! ANGEL NEAL

Chances are you’ve seen her face, those mesmerizing eyes are very distinctive. Her beauty has landed her in pageants, hair advertisements and beauty campaigns across the world. Even as a freelance model she has been staging a beauty industry takeover and she’s well ob her way. In her own words, “I come from a dark place, but its my time to shine.” We couldn’t agree with you more Acacia.

Tell us about yourself. Where are you from? Where did you grow up? I was born and raised in a rural area of central Mississippi. My childhood adventures took place between the towns of Eupora and Maben, but I graduated high school in Starkville, Mississippi. After declining my offer to play college basketball, I attended a junior college for a semester prior to transferring to Clark Atlanta University. How did you decide to be a professional model? Who or what inspired you? Honestly, it was my mentor Tiana Griggs. What started out being a pageant legend as my coach (total fan-girl moment, I know) ended up being one of the most impactful women in my life. Not only did she inspire me to follow my wildest dreams, she gave me access to every resource she had to allow me to do so. She would send me contests, casting calls, auditions, events, and anything else she thought I might be interested in. She even helped me get enrolled in school here in Atlanta so that I could pursue that dream while continuing my education. What was your first job? How did it feel? My first modeling job was with this black owned clothing boutique in Starkville, Mississippi named SwankyB. I was in high school and saw they were looking for models so I decided “why not?” It wasn’t an unusual feeling, because my best friend Ashleigh owned a Canon and she would take pictures of me all the time. You do a lot of beauty work is the ultimate goal? Beauty campaigns and advertisements? Because I do lots of beauty work, I’d say it’s my specialty. It has been my ultimate goal for so long now and it has allowed me to work with some of the best in the beauty business. However, my dream beauty campaign aspiration is to be on a Pat McGrath and Fenty campaign. What is your dream modeling job? As a former athlete, I’ve always wanted to work with Nike. The brand is culturally inclusive, and I love what they stand for. Seeing people who are often underrepresented on major campaigns makes me gain a new level of respect, especially when they’ve done it since day one. What do you enjoy most of the modeling? I enjoy most just being able to be a canvas for other artists. I love when I can help a vision come to life. How do you keep in shape and your skin healthy between gigs? Realistically, I don’t feel like I do anything special. Alongside having good genes I suppose, I have a fairly active lifestyle. I drink water from time to time, stay out of drama, take the stairs instead of the elevator, and I

exfoliate. What advice would you give someone starting out? Social Media! Opportunities are at your fingertips for free so I’d advise anyone to take full advantage of that. I’d also say get out and network, because social media is impactful but social skills will always prevail. Back in 2017 beloved model Jourdan Dunn said in an interview ““I don’t want to talk about [diversity] anymore. I feel like we’re going backwards. We take one step forward and then we go 10 steps back.”Here we are in 2020. Would you agree? Do you think black women and women of color are getting their due in the modeling industry? I do feel like we are getting more recognition now. Whether it is genuine or a part of a marketing strategy? I’m not so sure but I would hope that brands and agencies would have caught on by now. Women of color are not a trend. Women of color have always been valuable and brands know that. I think they just tried to disregard that fact for a really long time. Are there any models you feel are inspiring & disrupting the industry full throttle? Of course the OG’s Tyra Banks and Naomi Campbell helped pave the way for women like me in this industry. But my favorite model is Mamè Adjei. She’s relatable but stands out so much and I know that it has contributed to all of her success thus far. Another model I like is Jasmine Daniels. She’s a southern girl from Atlanta who is on high fashion campaigns, but she also rocks her grill from time to time. I like when people are themselves. It makes it that much easier to be inspired by their artistry. What are you looking forward to this year with your modeling career? You mentioned you appeared on an episode of Star. Could acting also be in your future? This year I am looking to sign with an agency. I’ve worked freelance my entire career as a model and while that has allowed me to some pretty amazing things, I’m ready for larger campaigns with various companies. As far as acting, I definitely plan on taking acting classes and hopefully getting some smaller roles starting out. Your Instagram pictures are amazing and beautiful! As a model and influencer, do you have some advice for people who want to improve their Instagram photos? Gee thanks! My advice is to get your friend with the most patience and find some good lighting. A large number of my photos on my page are IPhone photos.

With a bubbling personality and a face to slay Athena Nembrand is well on her way. It’s often said that luck plays a part in a model’s success, for Athena she has no problem being that divine intervention for herself and creating her own luck. You won’t see her expecting any handouts. She’s focused and ready to work. That passion and that drive we noticed on set while shooting with her for the cover. So far local beauty photographers where she currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia are definitely noticing. While scouting for faces that slay we discovered her on Instagram and she’s someone you should have on your radar. The St. Elizabeth native knew she wanted to be in front of the camera since she was a little girl. At 12 she relocated to Florida and the beauty and fashion cultured begin to interest her even more.

Who is Athena? Tell us about yourself. Where are you from? Where did you grow up? What gets you out of bed in the morning? I was born in St. Elizabeth, Jamaica I was raised there till I was 12 then I migrated to Florida. My daughter gets me out of bed in the morning. In an industry that still struggles with diversity. It’s safe to say Jamaica has proved to be an undeniable influence on the modeling industry. Tami Williams and Kai Newman appeared side by side in the pages of Vogue and made waves on the runway for Alexander McQueen and Valentino to name a few. How does that representation make you feel? Are you hopeful for my doors opening up? It makes me feel like there’s hope for me, and I feel like I have a better chance of making it in the modeling industry because someone else from the same community made it this far. What do you think is unique about the beauty of Jamaican men and women? I think our culture is so diverse and that in itself is beautiful. The diversity, we don’t all look alike, and we’re all different races. You dabble in video modeling, beauty and fashion. What’s one of the most interesting shoots that you’ve done? And what are your dream jobs? Commercial, fashion OR beauty? I feel like I’ve done a few creative videos in my time as a model. I’ve worked on abstract music videos that were pretty cool to be a part of and to watch. In the future, I would like to book more beauty campaigns and TV commercials. How do you get inspired on set for a shoot? My mind has to be in a good state before I work, I’m usually focused and I don’t like to be distracted. Having a good breakfast, and a good mindset helps me get inspired for a set.

The last-minute lifestyle and sporadic scheduling of a career in beauty and fashion modeling can be overwhelming being a mother and balancing career? Are you a fan of routine? When you’re a mother, there isn’t such thing as a routine. Everything is all over the place, but I balance everything pretty well. I have help with my daughter and that’s a big plus! What are some of the main challenges of models today? Self-love, and not remembering your worth. Are there any models you feel are inspiring & disrupting the industry full throttle? There’s a few I favor that are inspiring to me, Sydney Harper, Kiana Alexis, Aiyana Lewis and so much more! Your Instagram pictures are amazing and beautiful! As a model and influencer, do you have some advices for people who want to improve their Instagram photos? I personally think having a good camera or good phone camera helps a lot with the quality of your pictures. You have to stay consistent with taking pictures. If you’re putting out great content the followers will come. Any goals beyond modeling? Like acting? My first love is acting for sure, I love the fact that I can change who I am for a show or movie. I definitely say that acting is in the near future, I will become a great actress. What do you want people to know about you? I am a very stubborn individual but it’s for a cause, I am ambitious, motivating, goal oriented, I keep my eye on the prize at all times. You’re either going to be inspired or intimidated by me.

10 Biggest Beauty Moments of a Decade

By. LaDap E’ Style Griffin As we think back over all the beauty trends over the last decade, we think back about what the hottest most sought after beauty trend and products that everyone wanted. Let’s take look back into Beauty Lane:

54 Disrupshion

2010:

When we think beauty we cannot forget the nail crave in 2010. Nail lacquer was huge. There were many textured varieties of the nail lacquer that would convert a regular manicure into a major fashion statement. Nail polishes and nail art were desirable. Much of the nail art worked for all types of fab beauties. Casually, date night or for a grand fashion event nails were popular in the beauty world. Some of the looks that were in were gel polishes and print such animal print designs. What can I say the fingers had their sexy moments in 2010.

2011:

Hair, hair and more hair!! There was a wave of different styles of braids. One of the most stylish styles was the side plaits. The large invisible braid reigned supreme. The fishtail was basic but traditional. These styles made true beauties feel like goddesses. Another fun trend was highlights of the bold colors of ravishing red, hot pink and mermaid that made a splash in 2011. These styles in this year were a must have.

2012: Pucker Up!! Bold lips were made a statement in the beauty world of 2012. Hey it was almost like we stepped into the dark side with lips such as burgundy was a big hit in the makeup world. Pat McGrath set the trend of a dark vampire lip at Gucci. She created this by mixing two Covergirl lipsticks. Also retro inspired waves graced many runways. The voluminous curls made women feel elegant and gave the vintage softer side of beauty. 2013: Deep and mysterious was the high point of the bold eyebrow. Thick and t bold brows captured many beauty babes attention. For example British model Cara Delevingne continuously attracted many photographers with her natural bushy brows. Many beauties embraced the look. The bigger the better turned into the bold and the beautiful.

55 Disrupshion

2014: Skin is in. This was the year of the glow. Bobbi Brown nude glow collection heightened the skin tone. One star who shined bright was Katie Holmes. Other collections that made your skin shine pop was Jergens Glow and Nars which made skin look flawless. Other must haves for your glow booster were Clarins Radiance Golden Glow, Marc Jacobs Beauty Glow Stick and Skin Design London Vitamin C Antioxidant just to name a few. Shining bright like a diamond!

2015: Want to look perfect? Try contouring. That was the trend were people wanted their face to look perfect. Star scarlet Kim Kardashian helped with this craze. Top company Sephora helped with creating an animation that lasted a month. From there makeup companies were selling contouring kits like hot cakes. There were large amount of beauty vloggers who gave contouring tutorials.

2016: Beauty allure through the eyes. Eye shadow what an attraction. Runways and red carpets glistened with different metallic silvery eye shadows. Makeup lovers ran to get silver smokey eyes. One eyes would lighten up and give sparkle to enhance the beauty in the eyes. Youngblood Eye Shadow palette gave beautiful silvery dimension to the eyes.

56 Disrupshion

2017: Glitz and glamour. Body glitter and glitter lips were super popular. The glitter lip as the notable Pat McGrath introduced us to in 2017. Glitter lips was flashy and guess what everyone wanted these sultry lips. Wither it was applied to the face or different parts of the body we wanted to just glisten this year to give an extra pop to our beauty. Jill Stuart introduced glitter as a fun and lively style. They used glitter colors that took on the tones of pastels and multi –toned hues. Glitter fizzled on arms, faces and eyes. It was a radiant year of sparkle.

2019: Okaaaaaay were are here and one of the top statements in beauty this year 2019 was the Fine Line tattoos. Body art has always been big and creating a big wave in the beauty world. They consist of small designs and the body art can display script, meaningful quotes or anything that can be memorable. Most of these fine line tattoos are hidden on wrist and cracks of the arm and leg. The neck is another place were these fine line tattoos exist. Thinking of all these beauty trend I can’t wait to see what 2020 will bring to all the beauty lovers in the world!! Happy Shopping

2018: Okay who could remember the mask craze? I do! Facial were so huge in 2018. It was in high demand and beauty lovers doing facial to keep that beauty alive. The increase of facial products such as face mask and serums to enhance beauty to be picture perfect was booming. Almost every one tried the amazing Golden Mask facial or shall I say 24K gold mask. This is a luxurious anti -aging treatment. It lifts and makes the skin firm and of course reduced the presence of fine lines. Another big facial product that was sure to please was Shea Mosture Mud Mask or Sephora’s Charcoal Mask. These helped to unclog pores and reduce oily skin. This was the year of beautifying the face.

Disrupting The Culture

Q&A With Celebrity Stylist

Brookelyn_Styles. BY. Joelle Loleta If there is any creative powerhouse that has given us so much of who she is without ever revealing too much of who she is, it would have to be Brookelyn_Styles. This Creative Director, Stylist & Fashion Designer has transcended any ideals we assumed we had about what thinking & creating outside of the box really means. Her innovative eye for visuals has graced many fashion magazine covers, music videos and illustrious stages for the likes of Cardi B., Offset & Will.I.am. Hitting us with the dopest photoshoots and album covers for artists such as YG, & the 4Hunnid clothing brand . The love & hard work for what she does breathes life into beauty as we follow the story, one style at a time. DM: Everyone’s path to getting in the fashion industry is unique to their circumstance. How did you get into the business? I always had a love for the fashion industry. I started from the bottom

assisting, doing PA work, anything that would allow me to be in rooms where I could be a fly on the wall. DM: What job did you have before your fashion career began to manifest? I did visual merchandising for a few years then transitioned into personal shoppincloset organizing, and then assisting on sets. The rest is history. Have you felt any pressure from people in the industry to conform to a different way of doing things creatively that doesn’t fit your esthetic ? All the time...people will approach me about liking my aesthetic but ask me to do something completely different. Sometimes I change their mind and they are happy they did it. Sometimes I just walk away if it’s something that doesn’t feel like me. I didn’t come this far to compromise who I am. Have you felt pressure to charge less than your worth? Yes I have. In the past I did it a few times to be able to work with certain people. I don’t regret it but I definitely wouldn’t do it again. Are you living your dream? What do you see next for yourself? Yes! It’s more than I could’ve ever imagined. God is good. Working on my clothing and accessories line. Definitely see a shoe or two in the near future! I’m also looking into Directing in the upcoming year. Your work is so out of the box creatively. How do you stay motivated to constantly reinvent fresh visuals? I love what I do. I just wanna leave as much of me here and that keeps me wanting toOut do myself EVERY TIME. : ) What has been the best piece of advice you have gotten about career growth? That once we put our ideas out there they are no longer ours. To be selfless with our gifts, be a vessel, not take anything personal, and to stay true to who you are. What are some ways you can tell beginning creatives to cultivate prosperous futures using their gifts/talents? Work Hard! Keep pushing no matter what. Ask the universe for whatever you want because you can have it and be anything you want... as long as you can back it up with hard work. Educate yourself about the business side of this industry. Stay ready because you never know who will give you an opportunity that might change your life. Know that failures or learning lessons are a major part of the process. How is your esthetic disrupting the normal standards of the industry? My aesthetic is a beautiful clash of the poor and rich, the hood and the worldly flavors, a marriage of different ethnicities, religions, sexes...it’s giving the little girl in the hood a passport to higher grounds. Giving so many the keys to buildings they don’t want us in. Making the ugly beautiful, giving a voice to those who never thought they would have one. Disrupting the peace at all cause, creating new codes of conduct. Most importantly letting them know we are in the building and we aren’t going nowhere. 58 Disrupshion

FASHION DISRUPTORS

KEAMA GARRETT By Joelle Loleta

Today we shine the spotlight on Keama Garrett, who is the designer & owner of the up & coming stunning fashion line, Keama. She is a 2015 graduate of Kent State University & now resides in New York City. Keama has become a highly sought out designer who creates compositions with black women in mind. Artists & entertainers such as Phoebe Robinson (2 Dope Queens) & Megan Thee Stallion have been seen adorning some flavorful & standout pieces of the Keama brand. We caught up with her to get some details behind her blossoming successful career.

Being that New York is such a Mecca for creatives in everything from fashion to music to film, did you ever feel intimidated by such a saturated industry? Not really. I knew I was going to fashion capital it comes with the territory. That's why faith in oneself is so important. When you know thyself no one can tell you who you are. Plus other artist and art inspires me. I love different perspectives. Have you felt pressure to charge less than your worth? All the time as a black designer your always have to do deals for the “sister” and “brother” while nike or whoever drops a $250 shoe and it’s no problem. I was always raised to support black owned business and put money back in our community. At this point I don’t change my prices anymore. Do you ever have moments when you think you haven’t done enough? Not really I have moments when I want to do more. That’s because I have a big drive.

Have you felt any pressure from people in the industry to conform to a different way of doing things creatively that doesn’t fit your esthetic? When considering stylist pulls I’m like on and off with it, because sometimes it just be too much for them to pull. How is your esthetic disrupting the normal standards of the industry? I'm a black woman who makes clothing for black women. Anything focusing on black women is disrupting normal standards period. Where do your creative ideas come from? All my ideas come from God, the ultimate source. What are some ways you can tell beginning creatives to cultivate prosperous futures using their talents? Be confident in yourself. That is the biggest battle. Once you've won yourself over then everyone else will come. How far into your career did you experience what you considered your first “failure” or learning lesson? How did you bounce back? I feel like I’ve been failing upward for a longtime. I think that just comes with life, having business, and living in New York. Failures aren’t bad they are much needed lessons and reality checks. I think it would be getting fired from my first design job. it made me realize that I’m not built to work for a company all my life. I’m my own company. Nothing about me says I like to take orders from people and come in and clock in and have the same routines. That works for some people, the flow of my soul doesn’t formulate to that. I can try to fake the funk but sooner or later truth sets in. Failure also taught me while hustling as a freelancer, that the journey is really the destination. What does your creative process look like? I'm very into color and textile, so thats where it starts for me. Are you living your dream? Not yet, but one day I will be. What do you see next for yourself? Billion Dollar Baby!

NEW YORK FASHION WEEK ETIQUITTE

Words Angel Neal

New York Fashion Week is always my favorite time of the year. After navagativing 8 years of being an attendance I'd like to think Im a pro at getting my foot in the door. For me theres nothing like just experiencing a runway and seeing the clothes from the perspective of the designer before the looks are transformed in magazines, red carpets and stores. To Do List

1.RSVP In a Timely Manner Yes that's right! Send those requests to attend the shows you want ahead of time. If you doubt you'd grab a seat request standing as a back up. 2. Pack an On-The-Go Makeup Kit

If You get an All-Access or Backstage Pass make sure you grab great content!

Attending shows back to back can be a bit exhausting. So refreshing your make-up will be a must. If anything just make sure you keep your lip color handy. 3. Pack The Fashion Week MVP Cough, cough--thats a portable phone charger. Don't even second guess this. I'm sure you'll want to capture and blog everything.
