The actor, 63, stars on the CBS comedy Man with a Plan You play Matt LeBlanc’s contractor brother on the show. Did you do any research for the role? I’ve dealt with so many different contractors over the years, I pretty much know the whole gamut. And it’s not actually like we build anything; we have some blueprints we throw over our shoulders, but that’s about it. What do you love about your character? I hope this isn’t typecasting, but it seems like every character I play is the well-meaning, confident kind of idiot, you know? [Laughs] We just have to keep pulling back the reins to make sure I’m not too dumb. Your son Gable is now 10. What’s the best part about being his dad? He’s so funny and kind. My wife [Susan] recently asked him how he liked his meal, and he said, “It’s not my favorite, but it’s okay, you feed me emotionally.” Every day he does something that makes you say, “God, I love this kid.” —JULIE JORDAN

Designer Elizabeth Kennedy says the Orange Is the New Black winner “wanted a tailored, Old Hollywood look that was still modern.” Over three fittings, they custom-made this two-tone classic, which Aduba accessorized with Lorraine Schwartz jewels.

The Westworld star paraded in pantsuits all awards season to prove women don’t need “to look a certain way,” and this blue velvet Altuzarra design— with subtle Tiffany & Co. jewels and black Salvatore Ferragamo pumps—is her best yet.

“This is such a lovely shade on her skin,” stylist Erica Cloud says of why she chose this magenta Marchesa dress for the Chicago P.D. star. And the punchy pink didn’t stop there, with Bush choosing monochromatic makeup to match.

The Crown winner went for a full-on ladylike style in this floral Valentino confection. To finish it off, she added $800,000 worth of Tiffany & Co. jewelry, including a tanzanite and diamond ring.

MY LIFE AS A MOM

What are you like as a parent? Are you strict or easygoing? I’m probably on the stricter side of lenient. I think structure is good for kids. My kids thrive when they know where the boundaries are and when they can play. But I really just care about them having enough sleep, enough activity and good nutrition. When was the last time your kids made you laugh really hard? It’s a daily occurrence. The stuff that comes out of their mouths, you’re like, “What? Where did that come from!?” Havie also likes to mirror me. When we’re brushing our teeth or I’m putting on face cream, she’ll copy me and do the exact same expression as I do. It’s so cute. What do you miss most about your life before motherhood ? Sleeping in, and not worrying. I’m always worried about them. Even when they’re at school or they’re at home sleeping and we’re all in the house together, I’m still always worried about them!

They both have legions of loyal followers, but Adele and Beyoncé’s biggest fans are arguably, well . . . each other. “When Adele sings, you can hear that it’s coming from an unfiltered honesty and purity,” the Lemonade singer, 35, told Vanity Fair in December about her friend, 28, whose record-smashing album 25 reduced Hollywood heavyweights (like Kate Hudson!) to tears. “She takes you places other artists don’t go to anymore.” But on Grammy night Beyoncé and Adele—who once called the “Formation” singer her “Michael Jackson”—will also become fierce competitors as their albums battle it out for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Album of the Year. Something else the two have in common aside from making Grammy gold: Though they’re the best at belting about relationship woes on their albums (was anyone left unscathed in the hunt for “Becky with the good hair?”), both are in rock-solid relationships and will likely have their men, Simon Konecki, 42, and Jay Z, 47, by their sides on the big night. However the race shakes out, one thing’s for sure: This superstar friendship is staying put. “Every day as I get older, I appreciate women more and more,” Adele told Vanity Fair. “The more women in my life, the better.” —MELODY CHIU

Scoop ROBIN THICKE & PAULA PATTON

THEIR CUSTODY BATTLE EXPLODES Robin Thicke and Paula Patton’s nasty custody battle over son Julian, 6, has reached a boiling point. On Jan. 26 a judge granted the actress, 41, temporary custody and a temporary restraining order against her ex, 39, after Patton filed shocking court papers in which she alleges Thicke was abusive, struggles with addiction and cheated on her many times before their 2014 split. “He pushed me down and kicked me,” Patton says in the documents, detailing one alleged instance during which Thicke became infuriated after she’d stumbled upon him having “inappropriate contact” with his masseuse. Thicke’s attorney Angela Pierce di Donato responded to the allegations, saying, “[Patton] is attempting to throw anything at him to hurt him, but Robin’s focus is their son.” As for why Patton made her claims public, “she has to fight back to protect her son,” says a source close to the situation, adding that the “Blurred Lines” singer—who was granted three days of weekly supervised visitation—has only seen his son once since the ruling. Meanwhile a source close to Thicke says, “He’s taking this extremely seriously, and it’s unfortunate and very difficult when you’re on the receiving end of a campaign of negativity.” The exes are due in court Feb. 24. —JEFF NELSON, with reporting by Melody Chiu

Thicke (with Julian in a fall 2016 Instagram) and Patton finalized their divorce in 2015.

See Slippers (now Moxie, at left, meeting her new mom, People executive editor Kate Coyne, for the first time) take the field on Animal Planet, Feb. 5 at 3 p.m.

Several months ago it would have been hard to find someone less in the market for a new puppy than I was. I was five months pregnant with a spouse, two kids and a border collie already at home. But all that changed when I met Slippers at the taping of Animal Planet’s annual cuteapalooza the Puppy Bowl. Through a series of near misses with other prospective adoptive parents and my instant attachment to her, I suddenly found myself eagerly adopting this 3-lb. ball of fluff (a HavanesePomeranian mix) and falling head over heels in love. Now renamed Moxie for her indefatigable spirit, she is a constant source of joy (and barking) and is going to give this baby on the way some serious competition in the adorable department! —KATE COYNE

PERSONAL STORIES ABOUT GIVING BACK

Constance Zimmer

The actress, 46, promotes healthy eating habits by planting gardens at local schools I went to my first Environmental Media Association event over 10 years ago and quickly realized this is what I care about. The environment means everything to me. It’s something all of us are involved with whether you realize it or not. One project I’m particularly proud of is the “It’s never too late to Green My School Program, understand the benefits of which was started by EMA’s planting,” says Zimmer. Young Hollywood Board in 2009. There are so many statistics that show the lack of fruits and vegetables in our children’s diets. The Green My School Program came up with the great idea of planting gardens at schools in low-income areas. I recently did a garden in Santa Ana, Calif., for an elementary school, and it warmed my heart to see these tiny little kids getting dirty and digging holes and planting these plants. They were looking at them like foreign objects and saying, “What are these going to become?” I said, “These are going to become strawberries.” You’re teaching them so much more than just planting—you’re teaching them how the circle of life works. It’s up to us to teach the next generation how important environmental awareness is. I hope one day every school that wants a garden can have one. I think that once people get the gardens, they can’t For more information, imagine not having one. —REPORTED BY CHRISTINA DUGAN

Dan Stevens and Rachel Keller are in a special league.

1

This latest Marvel adventure promises to be one superstrange trip FANTASY Marvel Comics’ power-mutant universe has done well by Netflix—with spare, gritty productions like Luke Cage—but FX’s Legion is dazzlingly different and possibly the first show to surpass NBC’s Heroes for sheer, freaky invention. It stars Dan Stevens, unrecognizable from his days putting up with Lady Mary on Downton Abbey, as a disturbed young man named David Haller. He’s been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic, but his ability to turn a doctor’s consulting room into a storm of whirling debris would suggest telekinetic superpowers. The premiere, which blurs David’s inner and outer realities into a hallucinatory vision closer to Trainspotting than Doctor Strange, lets us only gradually start to guess at his predicament. (And the thing that looks like a large, murderous gumdrop? Who knows?) Then he falls in with a secret team led by the alluringly ambiguous Jean Smart. “The human race is beginning to evolve,” she tells him. Well, television sure is. (FX, Feb. 8, 10 p.m.)

Adams and Jeremy Renner must decipher the intentions of an alien species.

They came, they saw, and they were conquered by Amy Adams SCI-FI This transporting, transcendent story of a linguist learning to talk to aliens is up for eight Oscars, including Best Picture. (Adams, brilliant both here and in Nocturnal Animals, was overlooked.) It’s one of the most visually striking “alien” movies since 2001: A Space Odyssey, but the mournfully introspective narrative structure—shifting between past, present and future—also allies it with the quirkier, newer classic Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Remembering his wife, the legendary actress Mary Tyler Moore, Dr. Robert Levine is heartbroken, but—true to the spirit of one of the most beloved women in American comedy—he also finds comfort in memories of her special magic. “I can’t believe she is gone,” says Levine, who married the star of The Mary Tyler Moore Show in 1983 and helped her as she dealt with the progressive toll of type 1 diabetes. “Mary was my life, my light, my love. The emptiness I feel without her with me is without bottom. She was a force of nature who fiercely defended her autonomy even as her health was failing. Mary was fearless, determined and willful. If she felt strongly about something or that there was truth to be told, she would do it, no matter the consequences. She was kind, genuine, approachable, honest and humble.” And then, too, he adds, “she had that smile. Oh, to see her The Quiet Power smile that smile just once more.” of Mary Richards That smile had lit up the world. “It was never a stand-onAs the news broke on Jan. 25 the-soapbox-and-shout show,” Moore said of The that Moore, 80, had died from Mary Tyler Moore Show. cardiopulmonary arrest, “It pioneered, but it pioneered without selfpneumonia and other consciousness.” complications, millions of Americans felt “like they lost their dear friend,” says actress Georgia Engel, who played lovable Georgette on Moore’s classic 1970s sitcom. “I can’t tell you how many e-mails I’ve gotten from friends who didn’t know her but who take it as a personal loss—they grew up with her.” Valerie Harper, who played Mary’s pal Rhoda on the series, agreed. “I cannot stop the emotions I’m experiencing. She was my colleague,

my sister-soulmate and, above all, one hell of a girlfriend!” It’s a testament to Moore’s profound imprint on popular culture that her loss was keenly felt even though she had all but disappeared in recent years: Her last acting job was a reunion with former costars Cloris Leachman and Betty White on the sitcom Hot in Cleveland in 2013. “I had a feeling I wouldn’t see her again,” Leachman says. “If I could see her one last time, I’d hold her and say, ‘We loved you.’ ” Moore was buried privately in Fairfield, Conn., on Jan. 29, with close family and friends making up the 50 mourners. In her last days Moore had been on a ventilator at Greenwich Hospital in Connecticut. Her end “was definitely peaceful,” says her longtime assistant Terry Sims. She was surrounded by friends and, most importantly, Levine, 62, her great love. “It was a beautiful marriage,” says actress Bernadette Peters, a friend of Moore’s. “They cared about each other more than anything.” Levine “took phenomenal care of Mary,” adds Sims. “He would never let anything happen to her.” It was Levine who, not long after becoming Moore’s third husband, urged her to check into the Betty Ford Center to treat her alcoholism, gently humoring her: “Listen, kiddo, if you had a broken leg, you’d go to the doctor and he’d set it, right?” Moore’s other health battle, with type 1 diabetes diagnosed when she was 33, provided no simple cure. For decades a selfless advocate for the JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation), Moore grappled with “a grueling disease,” says Dr. Aaron J. Kowalski, chief mission officer for the group, who visited her in December. “She had eye and nerve problems. Really physically debilitating.” The actress was never self-pitying about her struggles, though. As she oncetoldLarryKing:“Youcanlivewith a lot of pain.” And with considerable resolve she hid that pain from most who knew her. Ed Asner, who played boss Lou Grant on Mary Tyler Moore, recalls only “the good, steady, hardworking Mary.” Moore “was amazingly

1. Her childhood was difficult, but she inherited a sense of humor from her parents, George and Marjorie (admittedly, she said, “subdued”). 2. Her first marriage, to Richard Meeker, faltered as she embarked on her TV marriage to Dick Van Dyke. 3. The tragic deaths of her son and her much younger sister Elizabeth (shown in 1961) made Moore inclined to reach “for a drink to soften the blows,” she wrote. 4. Second husband Grant Tinker (who died in 2016) was “irresistible,” she said. It was after a miscarriage during their marriage that she was diagnosed with diabetes. 5. positive,” recalls Bob Newhart, whose Bob Newhart Show was just one of the many prestige series (Hill Street Blues, St. Elsewhere) to come out of Moore’s production company, MTM Enterprises, with her second husband, television executive Grant Tinker. “She was always game,” says Peters. “She’d put one foot in front of the other, keep marching forward.” Trained as a dancer, Moore was a lithe, alert performer—but not, she claimed, “an actress who can create a character. I play me.” That “me” included some cherished traits—a tremulous nervousness, a reluctance to force herself to the front in a scene— that were already evident in her careermaking performance on CBS’sThe Dick Van Dyke Show (1961-66). She was the novice in the cast, “but Mary just picked it up so fast,” says Van Dyke. “She had us all laughing after a couple of episodes.” The Mary Tyler Moore Show, in which she played Mary Richards, an associate producer at Minneapolis newsroom WJM-TV, was instantly recognized as a new benchmark for situation comedy when it premiered in 1970, not only for its flawless ensemble writing but for focusing on a single woman more interested in advancing her career than in finding a husband. (Mary Richards was even on the pill.) Moore, as usual, downplayed her importance to this classic, which went on to win 29 Emmys over seven seasons: “I was the voice of sanity around whom all these crazies did their dance.” Yet Moore eventually let the world know that she kept that sanity at a terrible cost. Particularly after her Oscarnominated performance as the emotionally repressed mother of a dead son in 1980’s Ordinary People, she seemed liberated, notably in several bestselling memoirs, to acknowledge that her “stupendous” life had been flawed and often sad from the beginning. Moore, the Merrier On the Dick Van Dyke Show, Moore said, “Dick encouraged me to believe in myself and take the reins and go with whatever my soul was encouraging me to do.”

A New Mary Moore said director Robert Redford cast her as Timothy Hutton’s brittle mother in Ordinary People because he sensed a dark side to her.

This perhaps explains why, when once asked how she wanted to be remembered, Moore gave an unexpected answer: “Someone who made a difference in the lives of animals.” And what of her television legacy? “As somebody who always looked for the truth, even if it wasn’t funny.” Lucky for us, her truth somehow brought with it laughter—and that smile. mother, Marjorie, was an alcoholic. “She had to rise above that,” says Peters. “She just kept rising above that.” She was only 18 when she married Richard Meeker, a cranberry-sauce sales manager, in 1955, but they broke up just as she was becoming a star on The Dick Van Dyke Show—her first painful lesson in the cost of fame. “There was a time in my life when I thought, ‘You can do it all. You can have it all,’ ” she later said. “I know now that’s not true.” But there was a moment when she did seem to have it all—at least in the realm of Hollywood couples—with her 1962 marriage to Tinker, a CBS executive who exuded prestige. But they were growing apart even as Moore suffered two staggering blows: In 1978 her 21-year-old sister Elizabeth died of a drug overdose. Two years later Richie, her 24-year-old son (and only child) from her marriage to Meeker, shot himself in the head after a troubled life (that death was ruled accidental). By the time Moore and Tinker split in 1980, she was living on her own in Manhattan, anesthetizing herself with margaritas that (in her words) had “the consistency of a milkshake and the effect of morphine.” Her life began to improve in 1982, when her mother, ill with a bronchial infection, was treated by Dr. Robert Levine. Eighteen years Moore’s junior, he gave her his number in case of emergency. Moore asked, “Does extreme loneliness come under the heading of an emergency?” They married the next year and eventually set up house at a 150-acre farm in upstate New York. Moore never stopped hungering for new acting projects, but more and more she channeled her undimmable energy into her love for animals. With Peters she cofounded Broadway Barks, an annual adoption benefit for shelter pets. On one memorable occasion the vegetarian and fur opponent defended a red-tailed hawk’s right to build a nest on her apartment building in Manhattan. (“That hawk was really smart to pick her building,” says Peters.)

n Jan. 27 President Trump said nothing as he signed his latest executive order: Effective immediately, U.S. borders would be closed to Syrian refugees indefinitely, to all refugees for 120 days and to travelers who are citizens of the predominantly Muslim countries of Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days. In addition, preference would be given to Christians in future refugee applications. Within hours that silent order reverberated with a bang. Dozens of travelers—some fleeing war and persecution and having waited years to clear immigration hurdles—were detained at airports and, in some cases, ordered onto outgoing flights even as Trump’s new rules were being challenged in court. For the second straight weekend, the new President faced protests around the country and from within his own party. He responded by taking to Twitter. “Our country needs strong borders and extreme vetting, NOW...” he tweeted. “A lot of bad ‘dudes’ out there!”

Now married with a toddler, the couple were set to move from Singapore to San Francisco, where Olsen’s parents live. Al-Qazwini’s visa for Singapore expires in two months, so she can’t stay there, and she has no home or family in her native Iraq. The U.S. travel ban for Iraqis is “90 days, but they say they will see after that,” she says. “We don’t have three months. What am I supposed to do?”

The Sudanese citizen, who is a first-year resident at the Cleveland Clinic, was visiting family in Saudi Arabia when a friend texted her with border-closing rumors. “She was racing against Trump to get her flight back,” the friend tells People, but the order was in place when her plane arrived at JFK. “Once she landed, she texted me, ‘I need a lawyer.’” Put on a return flight to Saudi Arabia minutes before a federal judge blocked the deportation of arrivals, Abushamma, 26, told cleveland.com: “I had a good long cry on the plane.” Though the Cleveland Clinic has said it is “actively working toward the safe return” of employees affected by Trump’s ban, Abushamma’s future remains uncertain.

THE DUGGAR DAUGHTERS

A New Bride, More Babies & Big Changes TLC

The Duggar girls get real about raising (very large) families—and the road ahead By EMILY STROHM

THEIR LIVES NOW

“We’re all so close,” says Jana Duggar (center) with sisters (from left) Jessa, Jill, Joy-Anna and Jinger.

Last year was a busy one for the women of the Duggar family. First Jessa Duggar Seewald, 24, announced she was expecting her second child with husband Ben this February. In November Jinger, 23, said “I do” to Jeremy Vuolo, a former pro soccer player, in front of nearly 1,000 guests. That same month little sister Joy-Anna Duggar, 19, went public with the news she was courting her friend of 15 years, Austin Forsyth. And just before Christmas Jill Duggar Dillard, 25, revealed that she too was pregnant with her second baby, a son due in July. “In our family there’s always something to celebrate,” says oldest sister Jana Dugger, 27, of her 18 siblings, who star on TLC’s reality show Counting On (Mondays at 9 p.m.). “It keeps it fun and exciting!” And while not all of the sisters still live under the same roof with parents Jim Bob and Michelle (Jill, Jessa and their husbands reside in Arkansas; Jinger relocated to Laredo, Texas, with Vuolo), the Duggars have grown even closer as they celebrate their many milestones. “We FaceTime, and there’s always a family group message sharing what’s going on,” says Jinger. “It’s been joyous.” PEOPLE February 13, 2017

JILL DILLARD

An Unusual Pregnancy Diet

When Jill Duggar Dillard gave birth to her son Israel, 22 months, she had every detail planned out. But her home birth went awry, and complications forced her to the hospital for an emergency C-section—after 70 hours already spent in labor. But even after all the drama Jill says she is relaxed about having baby No. 2—another boy. “There’s a level of ease that comes with your second pregnancy,” says Jill. “Derick and I have been down this road together so we’re comfortable. I’m just going to see how it goes, try to be healthy and prepare as much as I can, but this time I know that labor is unpredictable.” After wrapping up a yearlong mission trip in Central America last August, the family have been residing in their native Arkansas— but perhaps for not much longer. The Dillards are committed to returning to their missionary work abroad. “We are planning to go back very soon,” says Jill. “Then we will come back for the birth of the baby.”

“I had lots of food aversions,” says Jessa (below, with husband Ben and son Spurgeon). “No meat, coffee or popcorn. So random!”

Family of Four “It’s going to be hard and challenging, but also a lot of fun,” Jill (with Derick and Israel in their gender-reveal photo below) says of raising two children abroad.

Closing in on her early-February due date, Jessa confesses she and her husband, Ben Seewald, have yet to find a name. “We’ve only had one or two conversations about it, so we need to get on it!” says Jessa, who has a penchant for unusual names (she did, after all, name her 14-month-old son Spurgeon). “We did this last time and procrastinated. Our son was 5 days old before we had it officially nailed down!” Decorating the nursery has been much easier, as Jessa opted to keep the same gray-and-white theme she used the first time. “It’s very neutral, so hopefully we’re not letting anyone catch on,” says Jessa, who knows her baby’s sex but is keeping it a secret. With plans for “many future babies,” the couple haven’t given up on their dream of adopting. “Ben and I still have a deep desire to adopt, and it’s something we continue to look into,” says Jessa. “We’ve also talked about fostering to adopt.” For now the Seewalds are focused on the arrival of their second-born. With plans for another home birth, “I am very, very ready to meet the baby!”

“Watching my sisters sets a really good example,” says Joy-Anna of her courtship with Austin.

The latest Duggar to begin courting, Joy-Anna says her relationship with real estate flipper Austin Forsyth is “moving right along.” The couple first met 15 years ago when his family started attending the Duggars’ church. “It’s really special that I got to grow up with him and my family knows him really well,” says Joy-Anna. “Everyone is really onboard.” The moment he asked her to enter into the courtship (the Duggars’ extremely conservative version of dating, which bans kissing until marriage and generally limits physical contact to “side-hugs”), “I was thrilled,” she says. “I had been praying that was going to happen and waiting for the day.” Already the pair have taken road trips together, gone hiking, hunting and even remodeled houses. “I’m not sure when the next step will come,” she says. “You would have to ask Austin what he’s thinking—and my dad!”

JINGER VUOLO

A New Life in Texas “We absolutely love our cozy little home,” says Jinger (right, with Jeremy at their Nov. 5 wedding).

Mother’s Helper “I try not to spoil my nephews too much,” says Jana (below, helping Jessa with baby Spurgeon).

JANA DUGGAR This Duggar isn’t afraid to get her hands dirty! As a big fan of renovating and home design, Jana’s been busy diving into remodeling projects for her friends and family. “Over the last two years I’ve really found that I love it,” she says. “I get to work alongside my siblings and my dad, so that’s what ends up being the most fun.” Though she is single herself and resides with her parents, Michelle and Jim Bob, Jana says she delights in helping her sisters out with their burgeoning broods. “I love watching my nieces and nephews,” she says. “I always enjoy it.”

After their “dream come true” wedding in Siloam Springs, Ark., and an “incredible” honeymoon in Australia and New Zealand last fall, Jinger and Jeremy Vuolo are finally settling into life in Laredo, Texas. “This is really home for us now,” says Jinger, who relocated to help Jeremy with his ministry work there. “We have just so perfectly adapted, it’s been incredible. The biggest blessing.” Even though she’s the first Duggar daughter to permanently move away from Arkansas, “it’s just a flight away,” says Jinger. And she’s already made plenty of friends in her adopted hometown. “I’ve definitely connected with the ladies here, and they have been so gracious,” she says. Now officially a Texan, Jinger says she’s still adjusting to the western style: “I picked up a pair of boots that aren’t super-cowgirl style, but kind of in between.” As for starting a family of their own, the newlyweds point to a higher power. “We are just enjoying our life together,” says Jinger, “and we will see what the Lord does.” February 13, 2017 PEOPLE

As a model for nearly a decade [she took a break in 2015 to focus on acting], what’s it like having all eyes on you? It is very stressful, especially when you’re thinking about people watching you. I just try to stay myself. That mind-set is evident in your social media profiles, which say, “Embrace your weirdness.” It’s not about trying to be weird. We’re all weird. It’s about being who you are and not trying to be anyone else. With nearly 37 million Instagram

‘I’M ABOUT BEING COMFORTABLE IN YOUR OWN SKIN AND NOT BEING SCARED OF THAT’

followers, do you ever feel social media pressure? I just try to keep it authentic. If I am second-guessing something, it already means that it’s not genuine. I just want to [post] it and feel good about it. How did you gain such powerful self-confidence? I feel that some days you wake up and you’re having a bad day and you just have to try to remember that it will be all right. It’s a daily mantra.

What’s your approach to makeup? I keep it simple. If I have a lot of meetings, I’ll be quick and put it on in the car! I love Rimmel London’s ScandalEyes Thick & Thin Liner [she’s a face of the brand]. For me, it’s always been about the eyes and brows. Many people are fixated on your full set. Do you like that kind of attention? I was always embarrassed about them when I was a child, so it’s nice that [the positive response] helps other girls accept theirs. Now I could talk about brows all day. What’s the rest of your beauty regimen like? Sometimes it’s hard to constantly wash my face and moisturize every morning and night. But I try as much as possible! [Laughs] I feel like it’s l k important to look

THE ACTOR, 61, STARS IN THE NEW CBS COP DRAMA TRAINING DAY

Last Take Your Kid to Work Day I was thrilled to have my son [James, 22], who costarred in Eye Witness on USA, guest-star on the eighth episode of Training Day. He plays the son in a father-son robbery team, and my character, whose dad was also a criminal, tells him, “We’re both our father’s sons, but that doesn’t have to define us.” It was surreal saying that to him.

Last TV obsession I loved watching Stranger Things with my daughter [Lydia, 19]. But I had surgery last spring and bingewatched all of Downton Abbey while I was recuperating. I got so engrossed in it, I was devastated when I got to the end.

Last thing I cooked

Last vacation

I’ve been living in West Hollywood while shooting the show, and last night I was too tired to go out to eat. So instead I cooked up a little linguine arrabbiata. I cut up the garlic, put in the red chili flakes and red wine and sit back and let that tomato sauce sink in. I do that at least once a week.

The summer before last, I went on a walking tour with my wife [Louise] through Wales. We thought these would be nice and leisurely walks, but they were intense 10- or 14-mile hikes. After a couple of days, we were just a wreck. But it was also one of the best holidays we’d had in a long time. The blisters were worth it. Reported by Patrick Gomez

Last time I couldn’t stop laughing A couple in the room next door to mine at a hotel put on quite a show through the walls. At the end of it, I heard one of them say, “Did you say your name is Mike?” I was like, “Good Lord, these people certainly dispensed with the formalities.”
