2021 FUNDRAISER

for the animals

bit.ly/CASFurBall2021

Welcome to Fur Ball 2021! What a year! We hope this Fur Ball celebration – although virtual – finds you happy, healthy, and safe!

Thanks to your giving spirit and support for our 2020 event during the pandemic, we were still able to raise well over $150,000 for the Cheyenne Animal Shelter Foundation. Monies raised are reinvested and the Foundation returns $41,500 each month to the Shelter to help sustain operations. At the Cheyenne Animal Shelter, our top priority is the animals in our care, and we pride ourselves on our ability to provide each pet with a warm place to sleep, nutritious meals, top-notch medical care, and genuine compassionate kindness from our staff that works day in and day out to find each and every one of them the perfect loving home. From Kal-El (the cat that was thrown from a third-floor balcony) to Denver (the Sheltie found along the Greenway after being missing for two months), the Cheyenne Animal Shelter and Animal Control helps nearly 6,000 pets each year. Kal-El found a fabulous new home with a kind owner, and Denver was returned to his family who’d had to carry out a planned transfer to Oregon – boy, were they ecstatic to see their little dog! Because we are an “open door” shelter (meaning we will never turn away any domestic pet that needs our help), we never know what to expect. But YOU help us take care of the animals, and we can’t say thank you enough or in enough ways. We appreciate your participation in Fur Ball: Hawaii Fido, our “fur-tual” fundraising event, and we hope to see you next year in person April 23, 2022 at Little America. Until then, thank you for all that you help us do for the animals! Happy bidding!

Celebrity Pet 2021

Charlotte Castaneda loves no one and nothing better than her “mom,” Sue, CEO of the Cheyenne Animal Shelter. She is an 11-year-old lab/golden retriever who accompanies Sue to work every day at the Shelter and spreads her brand of love (and tons of hair) wherever she goes. Years ago, when the Castaneda family sought a new furry friend, they checked often at the Cheyenne Animal Shelter but a match just wasn’t found. They then looked online at the Retriever Rescue of the Rockies website in search of an older dog that needed a home. (To clarify, Sue has had other Cheyenne Animal Shelter pets). Originally named Pocohantas, Charlotte was once owned by a Kansas man who loved her and taught her many tricks. Unfortunately, he had to go to jail for a time and so he gave her up to look for a new home. We were told that the man cried when he handed her over to the rescue organization. Charlotte loves, loves, loves to fetch and return tennis balls. A star in her own right, you may recognize her from her television ads with her friend – the late Abbey of Town & Country Supermarket Liquors. Sue and Charlotte wish to thank their good friends, Joe and Cindy Marek, for giving Charlotte the opportunity to be the 2021 Fur Ball Celebrity Pet. And she is sorry that she doesn’t look so happy wearing a Hawaiian shirt for her Hawaii Fido photo shoot. Charlotte is a free spirit, but she played along for the shoot!

Now I have arrived at your home, everything is strange, and I don’t feel good. Do not feel impatient if I don’t sleep in my new basket. Yesterday, I slept on a stone floor. Do not be terrified if I gobble up my food. Yesterday, I had to do it to survive. Do not get angry if I pee on your floor. Yesterday, it did not matter. Do not be sad if I am afraid of your loving hand. Yesterday, I did not have one. Have patience with me. It’s your world, but not yet mine. If I trust you, I can give you the greatest gift I have to give... my heart. Please never forget, I was a Shelter dog. All I need is a bit of time to adjust.

Each month 10-15 animals are altered through the Big Fix, slowly reducing the number of unwanted animals that are turned in to the shelter each year. The program targets low-income families and individuals that do not utilize veterinary services because of economic barriers and offers financial assistance for neutering of cats and dogs.
