IN THE MARKET FOR YOUR OWN GETAWAY?
TAKING "GETTING AWAY" TO THE NEXT LEVEL
We've got you covered!
The Thorofare Ranger Station Sometimes you just need to get away, and nowhere in the continental US is as "away" as the Thorofare Ranger Station.
Whether you love the endless plains or the unique rock formations or the fascinating geological wonders, (or all of the above!) Wyoming offers some of the most beautiful scenery on earth.
The Thorofare region is the most isolated and remote spot in the Lower 48 and just so happens to be one of Yellowstone's best kept secrets. The Thorofare Ranger Station is the furthest building from any road in the contiguous United States. (Side note: one tongue-in-cheek review states, "Nice location but a little far from public transit.")
If getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life is in your future, we've got you covered! With available ranch or recreation properties in Albany, Laramie, and Platte counties, , we can help you find exactly what you're looking for - anywhere in the state! Check out ranchandrecreation.com for up-to-the-minute access to all our fantastic getaway properties!
Hiking into the Thorofare is a severalday commitment to being in the wilderness on your own. The scenery is spectacular all along the trail, but the bragging rights?!? They might just be one of the best things about this hike! Many people would love to hike this trail, but few will.

Hiking Thorofare Trail from Nine Mile Trailhead is a relatively easy hike with little gain in elevation. The trail follows the length of Yellowstone Lake, which is sometimes hidden by the thick forests, with two streams, Cub Creek and Club Creek, to cross within the first 6 miles. The trail continues south along the eastern edge of Yellowstone Lake. The trail then stretches 8 miles into dense woodlands and then along Yellowstone River with views of both Table and Turret Mountains. Finally, the trail leads to the southeast corner of Yellowstone National Park and to the Thorofare Ranger Station. Here, the area consists of forests, willows and meadows. The ranger station is approximately 32.5 miles from the Nine Mile Trailhead. South of the ranger station lies the BridgerTeton National Forest which is the second largest national forest outside of Alaska. https://www.onlyinyourstate.com/wyoming/ most-remote-spot-in-us-wy/
WY-HOME-ING
Our favorite places!
Our #1 family loves Wyoming, no matter the season, but spring and summer are especially lovely - as long as you can look at all the road construction with a bit of humor! (Pro tip: Look at it as an adventure; what adventure isn't better for a little obstacle or two?!) With so many nearby opportunities (and many more further afield!) let's take a look at some of our favorites: 1. Curt Gowdy State Park. Nestled about halfway between Cheyenne and Laramie, this includes Granite, Crystal, and North Crow Reservoirs. Common activities include boating, water skiing (Granite only), canoeing and kayaking, paddle boarding, fishing, hiking, biking, archery, hunting, and rock climbing. 2. Glendo State Park. A recreational paradise for boaters, fishermen, and water-sport enthusiasts, Glendo also offers 21 different campgrounds - everything from a mountain feel to the ever-
popular beach setting! 3. Grayrocks Reservoir. A public access area near Wheatland, Grayrocks offers fishing, boating, hunting, camping, and hiking. 4. Guernsey State Park. The rugged and scenic landscape of this park offers water recreation, camping, hiking and biking trails, rock climbing, and of course, wildlife viewing opportunities. In addition, the park is also a National Historic Landmark! Nearby you'll find the Oregon Trail Ruts, Register Cliff, and Fort Laramie National Historic Site. 5. Hawk Springs State Recreation Area. This park has long been a favorite for fishing enthusiasts! Camping plus water-based activities (boating, fishing, and swimming) are what brings people to HSSRA! We want to know - what are your favorite spots?
SAFE HIKING TIPS
for the whole family!
If you've spent any time at all in the great outdoors, chances are you've heard the phrase "Leave No Trace." But what does it mean? Simply put, it's the best practices we should all follow to enjoy and protect our natural spaces. THE LEAVE NO TRACE SEVEN PRINCIPLES
We think Wyoming boasts some of the best hikes available, whether you're camping or just heading out for the day! Hiking is a family-friendly, cost-effective and experience-rich activity for people of all ages. Here are a few tips that can help you ensure your outdoor adventures are ones to remember! 1. Know the trail. Review trail guides that describe the terrain, elevation gains, and the difficulty of the trail. And don't forget to check the weather forecast! 2. Use the buddy system. Everyone should be in sight of their buddy at all times.
!
Plan ahead and prepare.
!
Travel and camp on durable surfaces.
!
Dispose of waste properly.
!
Leave what you find.
!
Minimize campfire impacts. (BE CAREFUL WITH FIRE!)
!
Respect wildlife.
4. Watch out for water. Mountain streams and lakes can be swiftmoving and contain unseen hazards.
!
Be considerate of other visitors.
5. Gear up and wear sunscreen
3. Take plenty of water and snacks! Hiking can make you hot, tired, and thirsty. Start your hike well hydrated, and take regular water breaks as you go.
(and bug spray!) Depending on the trail, sneakers may be fine, but if you're hiking on uneven, rocky terrain, hiking boots make a big difference. Wear good, thick socks, sunglasses, hats, long pants, and don't forget a whistle! 6. It's ok to be noisy! You may love peace and quiet, but the last thing you want to do is surprise a mama moose on a trail. If they hear you coming, they'll move out of your way! 7. Be a "tree hugger." If you're hiking with kids, tell them to stay put if they find themselves alone - and blow their whistle! 8. Leave no trace. (see the Seven Principles article!)
