The holidays are a special time to reconnect with family and friends, so don’t let the opportunity pass just because you are not in the same place. Be sure to get the kids (and even pets) involved and engaged over video so every member of the family feels included. Try a nontraditional menu! Having a smaller gathering means less stress about what to cook. While you can opt for traditional choices like turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, and other festive sides, consider changing it up.

We are living through a most interesting time – our country and the entire planet is experiencing an event that has changed our way of life in so many ways. As we approach the time of year when we focus on gratitude and selflessness we realize how much we might have taken for granted...simple things like everyday interactions we have with friends and co-workers. Hopping on a plane for a fun adventure is now this huge decision...should we or shouldn’t we? The many uncertainties and ever-changing headlines...The vision of what living the good life looks like has taken a small turn for many. Maybe the craziness has had a purpose. I know there are many takeaways for me personally that will no doubt carry forward in my life.

Try a dinner where every family member makes their favorite dish. Explore holiday food eaten in the countries your family is originally from. Or even ask parents or grandparents what they ate during the holidays as kids and

Perhaps the certainty we could agree on is that the spirit of this incredible City and State cannot be broken. People/Families want to live here, building in our community will thrive and creative opportunities will continue to grow. We are stronger together.

More than 25 local organizations and individuals partnered to fill 250 Halloween goodie bags and pumpkins for Cole and Hebard Elementary School students! This amazing group provided water bottles, winter gloves, toothbrushes, sanitizer, face masks, and small Halloween trinkets to stuff trickor-treat bags for local students. United Way

We hope this issue finds you well and safe. We would love to hear from you and of course see you soon. Enjoy this season of gratitude and joy!

We all love tradition, and one of #1 Properties' favorite traditions has been donating Halloween costumes to our adopted schools, where those children are able to select a costume free of charge. The pandemic has emphasized a need to social distance, so instead, we partnered with United Way to donate over 250 pairs of winter gloves along with Halloween goodies!

recreate those meals. Whatever menu you choose, your meal will be at the heart of the celebration, no matter the size. Or try our recipe for Holiday Tacos (YUM!) Take the opportunity to slow down! Not having to host a big gathering does have its advantages. Embrace the idea of a relaxing holiday season. Rather than giving into the hustle and bustle, just relax and enjoy good food, fun activities, and time with family. Too often, our high expectations for an exciting Christmas leave us disappointed. If your holiday plans aren’t as elaborate as they usually are, try to approach the season with one goal in mind — to relax and recharge for the upcoming new year. Start a new tradition! If you’re missing your usual traditions with family this year, take the chance to start your own! Switch up your seasonal decorations. Take holiday photos. Exchange handmade gifts. Do a Christmas craft. Bake something new and delicious. No matter what new tradition you start, you’re sure to make memories and have something special to look forward to again next year.

Cheyenne's

Comea

building hope

Since 1982, COMEA (Cooperative Ministry for Emergency Assistance) has operated as an emergency shelter for anyone who finds themselves homeless, with the belief that assistance should be available to all in need.

COMEA will also be featured in season two of The Fixers! Filming the last week of October, the finished program will air in early 2021. With The Fixers' help, this building will be transformed into a new Transitional Center! Phase One will include administrative offices and four sleeping rooms, so families can stay together (with potential for more in the future). Families will share the kitchen, TV room, and showers. COMEA believes this transitional program will provide the missing pieces – case management, employment assistance, access to school resources for children, free laundry, mental and physical health resources, and financial assistance for access to permanent housing – needed to help families escape homelessness permanently!

A goal several years in the making, COMEA has purchased the building just east of their current location on West Lincolnway in Cheyenne, assisted by #1 Properties' own Chuck West and Thomas Jacobson!

How can you help? Volunteer your time, donate clothing, hygiene items, or food, or consider a one-time or recurring donation via their website, comeashelter.org.

An anonymous donor offered to match a gift of up to $100,000 to help with the cost of the project, so COMEA is in the process of

We're #1 proud of the work this vital organization is doing for our community. Kudos, COMEA!

Holiday

Tacos

There are countless traditional and nontraditional holiday foods, so why not tacos? Especially these tacos, which feature comforting braised beef and a topping of holiday-ready pomegranate pico FOR THE SHORT RIBS: 2 bone-in short ribs (about 2 1/2 pounds) Kosher salt 2 teaspoons oil 1 cup pomegranate juice 2 ancho chiles (stem and seeds removed) 1 cinnamon stick 1 bay leaf FOR THE POMEGRANATE PICO: 1 cup pomegranate seeds 1 jalapeno pepper (small dice) 2 tablespoons shallot (small dice) 1 large lime (juiced) 1/4 cup pepitas (lightly toasted) FOR SERVING: 12 corn tortillas Garnish: Fresh cilantro, lime wedges, cotija cheese, or Mexican crema thespruceeats.com/christmas-tacos-4771274

Heat a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Season short ribs with kosher salt and place in pan. Brown 5± minutes per side, undisturbed, to develop a nice crust. When meat is well-browned, remove from the pan and turn off the heat. Deglaze pan with pomegranate juice, scraping bottom of pan. Place meat and juice in a slow cooker set to low. Add chiles, cinnamon stick, and bay leaf. Put the lid on and braise 6-8 hours until tender and the bones release from the meat. Turn off the heat; remove bones, bay leaf, and cinnamon, and allow the meat to cool in the braising liquid. Meanwhile, mix pomegranate, jalapeño, shallot, lime juice, and pepitas in a bowl. Roughly chop meat and ancho chiles. Taste and season with salt to taste. If needed, heat in braising juices to serving temperature. Warm tortillas to make them soft and pliable. Plate the tacos or serve family-style.
