Welcome You’ve heard all of us on the radio, now read our articles in print. Welcome to 1Mag – the official magazine of 1Radio. Thanks once again for checking out our magazine. Previous issues are still available online. As you may have heard, due to time constraints, this is my last issue as the editor of 1Mag. Fear not, I should still be producing a monthly article for the magazine under the new editor. More of that later. Of course I am still DJing on the station and if you tune in most Saturdays, you’ll probably find me on! Also check out issue 4, where I will have my DJ profile featured as well as the lowdown on the Formula One action in 2010. So here it is, issue three. Enjoy it! Welcome to the News Bits Welcome to the News Bit’s from the world and community that is 1Radio. If you have anything you deem as news worthy, then please forward the idea or article to us here at 1Radio.

4 Days of tunes Well the last Bank Holiday of the year swung into action on Friday 27th August. With our 1Radio DJ’s out in force, we had club music on the Friday, swing on Saturday, love tunes on the Sunday and finishing it on a very loud note was the awesome air guitar day on Bank Holiday Monday. Well that’s the last of the bank holidays for us here in the UK. To all who took part in this and the other weekenders this year, I think we can say we had a lot of fun and covered an extremely wide range of music. Get your thinking heads on for next year and also any ideas you have for Christmas and New Year! The forums are waiting for your suggestions.

Speaking of forums... If you’re a listener with a passion for good music and a large shot of innuendo, why not drop us a line here at the news desk. You can tell us what you think of any show or presenter, whether it is good or bad. Although we would prefer constructive criticism, I’m sure as impartial listeners you have some good suggestions. So anything you would like to hear or even hear less of, let us know either here at the news desk or sign up for a listener account in the forums.

News 1Radio s Spike Hammond brings a round-up of the latest news and events Football phone in comes to 1Radio

Magazine goes from strength to strength.

Our 2 football crazy presenters Garry Evans and Johnny P, have started their occasional phone in show covering everything to do with the world’s biggest sport. The first show was held on Thursday 2nd September covered a selection of topics from grass roots Scottish football to goal line technology. There was even some talk about women’s football! This is one show not to be missed, so watch out on the schedule for the Wednesday or Thursday night phone in with the two football‐crazed Scots. You can join in the fun by calling in to the studio on skype: music.kingdom. Who knows we might even get some of Johnny P’s famous tips for the weekend scores!!!

Well we are into our 3rd issue of the 1mag. As we strive to make it an interesting read and keep improving, we need your help. Most of the work is done by the DJ’s/presenters themselves, and to be honest we have a very short attention span! So what about an article from a listener? We are looking for one of you to submit an article on any subject you like. Could be about something you have heard on the 1. Maybe a show that blew your mind away, or a presenter that was particularly funny (I know that’s a long shot), or just a review of a show. I’ll leave that with you.

The second best fun to be had at night! Have you missed out on some of the “Midnight Selection” themed shows? Our leader, and all round good guy Tim/vakart/boss ‐ whatever you want to call him ‐ has been entertaining the late night listeners with his themed hour long shows. We give him the theme i.e. body parts, vehicles, moods and he chooses all the songs around the particular theme. Now some are easy and have loads of tunes i.e. the moon, But some like the spoken word songs I thought were hard, but no, not for the man himself. So get your thinking heads on again and see if we can challenge the boss to something that will stretch even his exhaustive mp3 collection.

When Pirates Waived The Rules 3pm on Saturday afternoon and the scene was set. Colin John kept us entertained with stories of the pirate radio ships that used to operate around the coast of the UK. It all made for a very entertaining hour of reminiscing (for those who can remember that far back) as well as learning about some of the history that has got us to the internet radio revolution. If you missed the show you can take another listen to it at http://1radiorock.com and find the podcast. I know Colin had planned this show for a long while and had a few technical problems on the day, but it didn’t take away from the brilliant content. So if you have an hour to spare go listen to what was an exceptional show.

1mag

November 2010

And lastly I must mention the return of one of my Saturday morning favourite shows. Chris Mathews and his Box of Records show is one of the consistently great shows on our station. Chris hasn’t been too well of late and took some time out to recover, but happily is now back and on form. So from all the crew here at the 1, it’s good to have you back Chris and we are glad you’re feeling better. Saturdays just aren’t Saturdays without you!

A 1Radio Special Event...

Seb & Liam’s C 1Radio abandons its normal shows and schedule for a day of fundraising On Sunday 24 October, 1Radio's Liam and Seb presented a marathon sixteen hour non‐stop broadcast in support of 'Leukemia and Lymphoma Research'. Slight technical difficulties meant the show started an hour late. The boys also took a cheeky break in the evening, leaving Weatherman Max to hold the fort (although Seb stayed on hand to act as producer). The day was a massive success with Seb and Liam undertaking a variety of tasks and challenges, all the while getting their listeners to contribute suggestions and donate to the charity. Some of the challanges of the day included a live link to Technical Isaac who was located at a nearby carboot sale. Issac was challenged with bringing back something for £2 that the on‐air team could use for the rest of the day. He later returned to the studio with a hat and some cheap jewellery. Nice. Other challenges included eating a totally disgusting sandwich (those donating were allowed to suggest the gruesome fillings) plus a painful waxing, live on air! 1mag

harity Takeover As well as the fun challenges, Seb and Liam also gave air time to the work of the charity, including interviews with Judy King, a fundraiser from Humberside and Yvonne Dickinson who spoke about how the donations make a real difference to the work of L&LR. Yet more features included an interview with David Young, a young and upcoming musician, an edition of Collins Awesomely Cool Quiz plus a chance for listeners to win a £50 Argos voucher courtesy of Ceejay. Max stepped in to give the boys a brief break with an hour devoted to 60's and 70's Folk/Rock With A Windy Theme. All the activities of the day appeared in a special version of the 1Radio shoutbox and listeners could follow all the action from different perspectives with three live webcams. All in all, Seb and Liam raised over five hundred pounds for the charity!

An Interview with...

Garry Evans Meet Gaz Evans. Father, husband and former Kingdom Beater...

So who is Garry Evans?

What is your favourite type of music?

Garry 'Gaz' Evans, is a married father of three, who enjoys nothing better than playing to an audience. I first got involved with DJing when I was 17 years old, working the local Fife circuit as a mobile jock, performing at birthdays & weddings. In 1994, I started helping out at 'Radio Forth' a commercial station in Edinburgh, although the pay was poor (I volunteered) I was bitten by the broadcasting bug. Fast forward 16 years and I have presented on hospital radio, ran my own disco company and am now happy to broadcast stress free on the world’s best internet radio station! I have also interviewed some 'Star's when on hospital radio including Take That's Mark Owen, Tony Christie and (whispers) McFly.

I have eclectic tastes, and love various types of music from Dance, the Rat Pack, 60's & 70's but if I was being pushed into giving one definitive genre then I would have to say Rock. Not the new style rock, but I love rock from the late 70s to the early 90s. My first ever single was ‘Kiss ‐ Crazy Crazy Nights’ (I bought it on 7"), I suppose it could be the glam image that a lot of the rockers from that era portrayed.

What show do you do?

Last year, you hosted the New Year Show. How was it?

So how did the The One Show start? To be honest I was looking to have a small break over the summer and "recharge the batteries". It also allowed me to listen to a host of other radio shows from all different stations (internet and commercial) in order to try and make my show a little different and more appealing. However some of my idea's such as changing to earlier daytime slots didn't work, as I had the family around and ended up with less listeners. I felt that I wasn't being 'me' on the radio, so I have gradually changed back to evenings.

The One Show—A mixture of music & chat, What is the genre today? Rock? Pop? Dance? Oldies? I guess you had better listen in and find out...

It was a great show, I put a lot of effort into it to get the timings and a look back at 2009. I wanted to give people outside of Scotland the chance to 'see in the new year' Scottish style. Hogmany was invented in Scotland and I am a very patriotic Scot!!

Top 10 tracks (All Time) 01. Queen ‐ Headlong 02. Bon Jovi ‐ Livin' On A Prayer 03. TTF ‐ New Emotion 04. Guns 'N' Roses ‐ Sweet Child O' Mine 05. Erasure ‐ Blue Suvannagh 06. ACDC ‐ It’s a Long Way (to The Top) 07. Journey ‐ Don't Stop Believin 08. Meatloaf ‐ Bat Out Of Hell 09. Bryan Adams ‐ Summer of 69 10. Giorgio Moroder & Phil Oakey ‐ Together In Electric Dreams

Kingdom '24 Hour' Beats?

Which current 1Radio Presenters do you like listening to and why?

Kingdom '24 Hour' Beats was an idea that I had to raise money for a wonderful charity, NAS (National Autistic Society). My son Lewis suffers from ADHD, as does the son of regular listener Sue From Texas. DJ Paladinleeds and former presenter AJ also suffer from the condition Aspergers Syndrome, both of these conditions are a part of autism, and so I felt that I should do my bit to both help raise funds and awareness of Autism. I had done 24 hour marathons before during my hospital radio days, it was great fun and I had Spike & Val‐D keep me and the wife company for the full 24 hours...and anyway who could forget Spike and his thong?

I enjoy listening to most of the presenters on 1Radio and I think we have professional sounding DJ's such as Spike & Tim. I enjoy their styles of presenting and you can tell they have fun presenting. I also enjoy listening to Johnny P & Mark Grieve, but then again I am biased as they are good mates who I have known a long time outside of Radio. I also enjoy listening to Rhodders, Helpsy & sometimes DJ Paladinleeds (until he plays Dragonforce!) for the comedy element. I think we have a new breed of DJ/Presenters coming through such as Liam & Seb, DannyF, Scott & Stephen, who I see as enthusiastic. Although a lot younger than me, and perhaps we don't share the same interests or types of music, I see them as the future, although I hope that many of us older wiser heads will stick around to help nurture them and play to the 25+ age groups!

Have you got any surprises lined up for future shows? Well if I told you that, then they wouldn't be surprises would they? But yes I have one or two things up my sleeve!!

What are your highlights of 2010 so far? I loved being part of the ‘Top 500 weekender’ that marked the 2nd year of running for 1Radio, but personally summer 2010 was not a really memorable summer due to work, although in August I did win a trip on the Orient Express to the Ryder Cup in Wales. This took place the first weekend in October so you guys need to tune into my shows after that to find out more.

Tell us a bit about your journey through radio. To be honest it was a bit of a fluke, in 1992/93, I was unemployed for a few weeks and decided I had to get a job, so I opened the yellow pages at random and stuck my finger into a page and decided whatever my finger was at, I would apply (thank god I missed the escorts page). It landed on Mobile Disco's, so I called the first company and told them that "I had always wanted to be a DJ", the guy I spoke to couldn't help me, but put me in touch with his mate Ross, for 15 years I worked with Ross and quickly discovered that I had finally found something that interested me, and that I enjoyed. I decided to see how I could expand it and got involved with Radio Forth, Hospital Radio and then in the ‘naughty noughties’ internet Radio, and thus found 1Radio.

Liam V’s Top5 1Radio s Liam V counts down another top 5 from his fave selections...

Pendulum – Witchcraft When I first bought this song I found it difficult to get in my head (which sounds a bit weird) but now I really like it, but for anyone that doesn’t like Pendulum you definetly won’t like this as they have gone back to doing their usual style of ‘jump up poppy’ drum and bass. On the other hand if you do like Pendulum, you won’t be let down with this record.

Ellie Goulding – The Writer I love this song, original Ellie Goulding fans will be pleased to know she’s back to her more acoustic styles especially with her live sets which have changed over the two times I’ve seen her. I recommend this song to anyone who liked ‘Guns and Horses’ by her or anyone that likes music by ‘Amy McDonald’

Chase and Status – Let You Go Big big record, if you know Chase and Status from their drum and bass or their dubstep, you could be a little disappointed as they do try their hand at dance music, however I don’t care what genre they make, this is a tune, this one will smash the clubs and it’s guaranteed to be a feature record of the week from me, the vocals from Mali are brilliant, full of anger and the production is amazing, as ever.

Tensnake – Coma Cat I’m listening to this record as I am writing this and it’s a brilliant 80’s infused track, perfect for Ibiza. The steel drum sample in this track is just brilliant and ‘sing‐ a‐long‐able’. I definetly recommend it to pretty much anyone, there’s hardly any vocals in this song apart from the odd loop but I don’t think it needs it, so give it a listen.

Katy B – Katy On A Mission This one was my record of the week a couple of weeks ago, serious obsession with this one, whenever I hear it on the radio I get excited, it’s just full of energy and the record actually started off as just an instrumental by Dubstep Don ‘Benga’. Then Katy B a new emerging artist rang him up and pretty much said ‘yo, can I sing on your record’. The results are amazing.

Album Review...

Tinie Tempah 1Radio s DJ Javo reviews the first album from the hottest act of the Summer The 4th of October saw Tinie Tempah release his first studio album., “Discovery”. The British rapper’s stunning new album received praise from similar acts. The whole album provides variety with a long list of guests including Ellie Goulding, Kelly Rowland and well know producer, Labrinth. The public went mad for it which ultimately saw Disc‐overy debut at number 1 in the UK albums chart with a whopping 84,993 sales in the first week. Now of course we get down to the music. Starting off with the singles, Pass Out, Frisky and Written In The Stars which we all know and love. Then we get down to the new stuff, the ‘bassy intro’ with the synthesised voice but other than that a normal rap with some classy effects! Next we have Simply Unstoppable, another D&B style track, more so than most of his music (but still up there). Illusion doesn’t really strike me much, undecided on this one but will probably get into it after repeated listens. I like the rhythm of Just a Little but it gets boring in parts (non‐chorus) and as for ‘Snap’ I think it’s a bit slow to get started. As for ‘Miami 2 Ibiza’ still a great tune but don’t really know what Tinie adds to it if I’m being honest. Next brings up ‘Obsession’ which I found quite boring and is preceded by 2 really nice tracks I’m taking to quite alot, ‘Invincible’ and ‘Wonderman’. Finally the last track, Let Go which is a quite nice song to finish the album with, although I would have preferred to have it a bit more tuneful. Overall I think it’s a great album, admittedly I think the 3 singles are the best (they give the album a pretty high mark), some of the others put up a hard contest and shouldn’t be thought of lightly but others disappoint in sections. MY RATING: 3 ½ STARS

Gig news...

Take That! 1Radio s DJ Vakart takes a look at the big tour of 2011

Nevertheless, later in the day, Will proudly announced in the shoutbox that he'd bagged four tickets following hours of clicking and surfing. Despite the technical difficulties, it was reported that an estimated 1 million tickets were sold in less than 24 hours when booking opened. Meanwhile, Take That fans will be hoping that Robbie Williams return to the fold will make this an exciting and unforgettable tour. Of course, Robbie hasn't avoided controversy since returning. The band's PR conference was notable for a Robbie outburst, proving the recently married star is still a Rebel Rebel, though there's no doubt that Gary Barlow is still the Leader Of The Gang. The enormous clamour for tickets shows that Take That are still as popular as ever and the return of the Robbie has only added to the interest. Critics will of course claim they are only in it for the cash but die‐ hard fans as well as those new to the Take That phenomena will not care either way. Whichever side of the fence you sit, its gonna be big!

So, the stage is set for the biggest show of 2011. And it’s been the subject of much discussion and debate in the shoutbox at 1Radio. Robbie is back on board and everyone's favourite boy‐ band are raring to go. Take That will play numerous stadium shows throughout the summer of 2011, including four nights at both The City Of Manchester Stadium and Wembley Stadium in London. Booking for the Take That 2011 Progress Tour is up and rolling and fans have been scrambling for tickets. 1Radio's Will Reid, lover of 80s disco and closet Take That fan, was first amongst the thousands of people trying to blag tickets when bookings opened in late October. When questioned, he claimed they were for the wife. His wife says different. Sadly, Will and many more were left frustrated and annoyed as the web seemed to grind to a halt as sites selling tickets failed to cope with the demand. Fake websites too were a hazard for the uninitiated with tales of scores of unsuspecting folk being sold dud tickets.

Tidy those tags with...

Tune Up Media 1Radio s DJ Vakart discovers some new software for your MP3s If you broadcast on 1Radio and have seen your music incorrectly tagged, or if you have listened in to a show only to be frustrated by the lack of decent now playing info, then you'll appreciate how important it is to have accurate MP3 & ID3 tags. If you take any pride in your MP3 music collection at all, then you ought to care about keeping the tags in order ‐ without them, artist and title info is not correctly displayed and artists miss out on royalties as we are unable to accurately report what we have played. If you manage your music collection in iTunes and enjoy browsing your collection with the gorgeous coverflow, then you'll just as likely care about keeping the cover art in order too. Tuneup is a great bit of software for doing just that. It integrates seamlessly with your iTunes or Windows Media Player and will help you tidy your MP3 tags and attach the relevant album art.

Its easy to use and virtually flawless in identifying incorrectly labelled music. It "listens" to the song and runs its audio fingerprint by the mighty Gracenote DB to identify the tune. So even if you have partially correct tags or no info whatsoever, chances are Tuneup can identify it. Give it a spin at www.tuneupmedia.com and download the free trial good for a limited number of clean ups. If you like it, buy the full version (and quote the discount code MIDNIGHT) to get a further 20% off. You'll not regret it. And neither will our listeners ‐ as it will help keep our now playing info accurate, up‐to‐date and useful! Want to win your own copy? Then take part in our competition. Details opposite.

New month. New Presenters...

Who’s New? Say hello to some of 1Radio s newest members

James Allen

Ryan Macnair

Hi, I'm James, a professional web developer, voice over artist and occasional radio presenter. I love the 80's for it's sheer craziness in music, fashion and style. I'm also a big dance music and hip hop fan. I have one goal with my radio presenting and that is to thoroughly entertain whenever I am on the air. Whether it be great music or random chat I'll always do my best to brighten up your day.

Hi, I'm Ryan, aged 17, from Peterborough in the UK. I've been involved in radio for a year and a half, and absolutely love it. I have broadcast a variety of shows on a number of internet radio stations, and have also been on FM in my local area with a restricted service licence (RSL) station. My shows are a mixture of music and chat and come in a range of styles. My music taste is dictated by my mood, so that means there is always a lot of variety on air.

DJ Craigyboy

Jonathan Sawyer

My name's Craig Pilley. I'm 24 and live in Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire. I've always fancied being a presenter and am so glad 1Radio have given me the chance. I've loved music and radio all my life, since I got my first CD and player. It's my dream job. So much so that I went out and have slowly been building my studio.

I'm a 6th former from Reading and involved with Hospital Radio. I also do a weekly podcast with a friend. I'm also a mate of 1Radio's Rhodders (y'know 'Thank Rhod it's Friday') and if I can quote what was said about me when I was accepted, "Obviously done this before...". Thank you who ever that was!

Fred Hart Currently studying for A levels at my local college, I volunteer for my local community radio station in Cirencester, Gloucestershire, where I press lots of buttons and present a few shows.

If you think you have what it takes to be a presenter on 1Radio, we’d love to hear from you.

As well as broadcasting on 1Radio, I volunteer for my local community radio station where I do the website, make sure all the technical equipment works, and present a number of shows.
