Wine tasting in New Zealand

Welcome to Unique Escapes Christmas is well behind us now, but I hope you all had a good time. One person I know certainly did; Ella in our office jetted off to Abu Dhabi and she’s sharing her experiences with us later in this edition. It makes a great stopover on the way to or from Australia. Sitting writing this, it’s blowing a gale outside and my mind is wandering to the fantastic snow conditions they enjoy in Western Canada at this time of year; that’s all that will happen mind, the knees gave up years ago but I can still enjoy the other winter activities on offer in Alberta, you check them out in this issue too. Escorted touring is the perfect way to explore any country, especially if you’re a first time visitor or prefer not to drive. If you’re after seeing the must see sights and having everything organised then this is the holiday for you. And no, it isn’t a holiday just for the older generation either… Two of our partners showcase their tours in New Zealand and Australia in this issue and I have to say that they both have some excellent tours to offer. Avoid the crowds, get the best prices and still enjoy great weather by travelling in spring and autumn months. Canada celebrates a very special year this year, 150 years since the Confederation. There’s a lot going on across the country and especially in the capital Ottawa. All National Parks and Historic Monuments are throwing their doors open free of charge for the entire year, so there’s never been a better time to visit. As ever, I hope this edition gives you some holiday inspiration; where ever you decide to travel have a great holiday.

Made up of the six diverse states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, New England is known as the “birthplace” of America. Each state has it's own way of life but is connected by rich history, cultural attractions, fascinating cities, scenic villages, outdoor adventure and delicious local food and drink. New England is famed for its dazzling fall foliage with a magical expanse of red, gold and orange colours stretching as far as the eye can see. But the region is much more than just the autumn months. It is rich in history: pilgrims first arrived and settled in Plymouth in 1620. By the late 18th century the British colonies of New England were among the first to demonstrate ambitions of independence and in 1775 Lexington and Concord saw the first shots fired of the

American Revolution. In the 19th century, New England also played

a fundamental role in the movement to abolish slavery.

Six States, Six Reasons Spend a few days in historic Boston, with its fine restaurants, superb shopping and fascinating museums. Maine is known for its long craggy coastline, picture-perfect lighthouses, hidden coves and rugged mountains. There are bustling cities and picturesque fishing villages to explore, fine museums and the freshest lobster straight from the sea. In New Hampshire, towering Mount Washington, in the White Mountains and hundreds of lakes means outdoor activities are in abundance! Add in historic and lively Portsmouth, tax-free shopping and New Hampshire offers something for everyone. Vermont boasts incredible scenery; red barns, covered bridges, stone walls, country roads and picturesque villages. It is also great for hiking, romantic weekends and family breaks. DISCOVER

ABU DHABI If you’re looking for impressive shopping outlets, desert drives and golden beaches, the cultural haven of Abu Dhabi is a must-visit. The capital of the United Arab Emirates is just waiting to be explored and we’ve come up with some of the best places to visit during your stay. Lourve Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

20

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque The extravagant yet elegant beauty of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is something to behold. Founded on the concept that our most gracious achievements start from the heart, the mosque sits on the entrance to the Abu Dhabi City Island and can be seen from the three main bridges in Abu Dhabi; a symbol of the connection of the people of the UAE and the Sheikh. Make your way through the mosque and experience the breathtaking beauty of 82 domes of differing sizes, each crowned with a gold wreath. Take in the amazing pure white colour of the mosque, probably it’s most famous and impressive feature and something that the Sheikh associated with purity; witness amazingly extravagant chandeliers and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet. Take a free guided tour of the mosque or explore by yourself; either way you’ll be able to immerse yourself in culture and gain a new depth of knowledge of the Muslim faith.

Yas Island This adventure-packed island found close to the airport is one of Abu Dhabi’s most popular attractions. Visit the world’s largest water park and go sliding and rafting down ravines, or jump into the water and beat the waves with one of the park’s many wave machines. Yas Island is also home to Ferrari World, a theme park home to the world’s fastest rollercoaster ‘Formula Rossa’. Formula Rossa certainly isn’t for the faint hearted… reaching speeds of 150mph! Visit the Formula 1 track or see if there are any concerts on at the amazing Du Arena.

Desert Drives If you’re looking for adventure, a short journey from the city centre takes you to the desert and with that you’ll get to see sand dunes that rise 100 feet up from the ground. Choose a 4x4 tour to venture through the pristine golden sands or take a trip to Al Ain, ‘the Garden City’, an oasis in the middle of the desert; the stunning greenery of this desert haven is simply breath-taking.

Masdar City One of Abu Dhabi’s most impressive and interesting (to say the least) attractions is Masdar City. In this zero-carbon development, no cars are allowed. Enter the area in a driverless pod that runs along guided rails to explore this city that is powered entirely by the sun and winds that blow off the desert sands. Though Masdar City is currently no larger than a village, the project is expected to expand substantially in coming years and is home to technology that is likely to be seen in towns and cities across the world in the future. If Abu Dhabi isn’t on your list of places to visit in 2017, it’s time to consider it! Adventure or relaxation, Abu Dhabi has something to offer for everyone and with beautiful weather pretty much all year round, there’s no reason not to go. Even better, it makes a perfect stop-over en route to or from Australia and New Zealand – that dream holiday “Down Under” just got a whole lot better… For more information call our travel experts on 0161 888 5608 or visit our website at: www.fcholidays.com
