EUROPEAN ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMMME ERASMUS + 2014-2016 1st SECONDARY SCHOOL OF GERAKAS Gerakas is a town of ​11 sq.km and of approximately 30.000 inhabitants , situated in the eastern part of Attica. It belongs to the Municipality of Pallini. The ancient name for Gerakas was "Gargittos". It is 30 km away from Marathon (the town) and is part of the authentic Marathon route.

Our school was founded in 1977. It has been housed in the current premises since 1991. We have 223 students studying and 25 teachers working in our school. 1st SECONDARY SCHOOL OF GERAKAS has a tradition in implementing cultural and environmental projects, that goes back 20 years. The produced outcomes are presented and/or performed before public at the school premises and/or the Cultural Centre of Gerakas or other institutions.

Our school has become a member of the Network of Ecological Schools –Greek Company for Nature Conservation - Eco Schools and we have been implementing the seven steps defined by the network to get the green flag. ECO-SCHOOLS 7 Steps to Sustainability 1) Eco-Schools Committee 2) Environmental Review 3) Action Plan 4) Monitor and Evaluate 5) Curriculum Work 6) Inform and Involve 7) Produce an Eco-Code In June 2015 we sent a report of our actions to the Net, including photos ,videos , ppts and written material. On 09.16.2015 we were informed that our school was positevely evaluated and therefore we could carry on in the year 2015-2016.
Ecological committee a / The teachers who form the pedagogical team of the European programme: Maria Antoniou, Assistant Headmaster Maria Archou, Corinna Pertsinidou and Headmaster Dimaras Panagiotis,. b / Students from all grades of the school ( 50 Sts this year) c / The Association of Parents of the 1st Secondary School of Gerakas. d/ the Municipality of Pallini, Aware of our actions is the Head of Environmental Education in the Educational Division for Secondary Education in Eastern Attica, who participates in our environmental events. The Cultural Association of Gerakas '' SOURCE '‘ ( ΄΄ΠΗΓΗ΄΄) supports actively our project by providing us with recyclable materials.
We work with: The 4th Primary School of Pallini . We had our 1st Environmental Meeting last December, hosted by the Primary school. The 2nd Environmental Meeting will be held in spring 2016 , hosted by 1st Secondary School of Gerakas.
Also: in our immediate future plans, are: 1/ to come up with ideas of reusing plastic and metal recyclable objects with the help of the teacher of Technology . What we have already done with the teacher of Physics with recyclable material : (Reuse-3Rs) a/ In electricity experiments we conduct in the lab, we use voltages of 4,5 -9 volt. Since the power supply systems of the lab benches do not function, we thought to get old mobile chargers, which are also current transformers and can convert the alternating voltage of the net from 220 volt to 4,5-9 volt. b/ We reuse old electric three-phase current boards that no longer function, for educational purposes, that is to show the mapping of an electric board.
2 / to study the biodiversity in the school garden.
Biodiversity, that is the variety of flora and fauna of a place, expresses the richness of the natural world. Biodiversity together with the natural
environment creates ecosystems, the natural world. In our school, with the Erasmus+ team and under the supervision of the teacher of biology and member of the team, we are going to study the biodiversity of the small ecosystem of the gardens of our school. This way we will be able to understand the importance of living beings that exist here. We will learn to recognize the plants through the "keys". The ‘’keys’’ are a way of classifying plants in terms of blossom, leaves, height, nuts etc. This way, we will discover the plants of our school .
WE SUPPORT OUR ACTION PLAN with visits to sites of environmental interest and by organising school events: 1/ A 3-day educational trip to the island of Syros, Aegean Sea (April 2015) The municipality of Syros has been awarded with the prize 'DAPHNE' for its innovative recycling program. 2/ Educational visit to the΄΄ Centre of Earth΄΄ and the ΄΄Park of Environmental Awareness ΄΄Antonis Tritsis΄΄, both in Attika.( March 2015 ) 3/ Celebration on World Earth Day - 22/4/2015 : Events of environmental nature at school AND speech of the Head of Environmental Education in our division on: ΄΄ Pendeli Forest, its ecosystem and the negative effects on it because of human intervention .΄΄ Forthcoming events: APRIL 2016 : a/ Participation in the 4th Panhellenic Conference for students organised by the Greek Society for the Protection of nature –Eco Schools. b/ A 3-day trip to Kalamata , capital city of a prefecture in Peloponnese. Attending a recycling program at the local Centre of Environmental Education.

Our suggestion : The Municipality could create a platform for all the schools within its boundaries to connect and exchange good practices.
