01 The Party
Reconfigure and remap the ownership of party wall
Architectural Association, year 3 project, in progress Tutor: Ryan Dillion, David Greene Party Wall - as a means for separation - is one of the most importance architectural elements in regards of ownership, boundary and privacy. The project questions it ownership by rewriting Party Wall Act 1996 and rethinks its effects in reshaping the relationship between different parties and the city. Based on the condition in London where there is an exposed party wall after the disappearance of one the two adjacent houses, the new act grants non-owners the rights to acquire the ownership of the wall through adverse possession. This can be referred to the schedule 6 of Land Registry Act 2002 - adverse possession - but with a different valid time period and involved subjects. Therefore, a new narration with three different kinds of intervention from the outside is created as an anticipation for the futuristic development. Shifting away from a piece of legislation that merely separates and protects the domestic sphere from the urban realm, a permeable architectural device that generates a more mutual, inclusive space begins to emerge creating a place for interaction, communication and negotiation – a new publicly engaged domestic sphere.
