the dream

It seems that around this time of year, the all too elusive riding dream comes into full effect. I’ve got a feeling it’s probably something to do with bike deprivation on an all to regular basis. Plans begin to form in the midnight hours. All driven by a need to escape the mundane daily program dictated by early sunsets and all too frequent rainy weekends. So to fuel your fire through these cold winter months, we decided to up the ante a little and give you guys a little more to check out with a bigger mag. And to take your mind off the cold days and nights, theres enough road trip action to get you fired up to spread your riding wings. Yep, theres a light at the end of winters tunnel and it’s a blazing summer. We’ll be bitching about it being too hot all too soon. So, get yourself organized early. Make the plans. Get your crew together and get out and amongst it Be it around our crazy ol’ country or overseas. It’s there for the taking. Holmes

Making history

2007 Marks the 30th anniversary of the most iconic bike in bmx history, the pk ripper. This collaboration between dc and se racing brings back the bike that has become a legend in the bmx community and beyond.

To celebrate the 30 plus years of BMX history and the original PK Ripper, DC and SE Racing are joining forces to re-release a complete PK Ripper bike in its original style for an exclusive limited edition project named “30 Years of Radness” Only 150 bikes have been produced and only 20 of these will hit Australian shores making them pretty much hot property from the get go. Plus a limited run of DC PK Gatsby shoes have been produced that pay homage to the original PK Ripper and are packaged with a special edition re-release of Joe Kid on a Stingray. BMX began to take shape in 1963 and seven years later, in 1970, teenage entrepreneur Scot Breithaupt started the “Pedal Cross” races in Long Beach, CA, which is what many consider to be the birth of organised BMX racing. Scot captured the first US National BMX title in 1976, and soon afterwards started SE Racing (standing for Scot Enterprise). From that initial start, SE Racing became one of the most significant early BMX brands and has stayed that way for over 30 years. Breithaupt and his team at SE innovated many frames, the most legendary of these being the PK Ripper. Named after local rider Perry Kramer, the PK Ripper soon became one of the

14 ISSUE 25 JUNE 007

most sought after bikes of all time. When the PK Ripper hit the BMX scene it forever changed the look of BMX design. As a result, the industry advanced and the 80’s BMX scene was born. A major element of the collaboration between DC and SE is the DC PK Ripper bike which is a replica of the famed original that has been updated with modern components. This DC PK Ripper will be the first in a series of three limited edition bikes released from SE Racing, all designed to embrace DC, SE and BMX in general. Truly a collector’s item, each one will be numbered on a custom plate on the seat tube and painted in a gunmetal matte black with black and silver gloss numbered plates. Todd Lyons had this to say about the bike. “The most famous BMX bike of all time is back and I’m glad that I was a part of this project. We have been working on this DC/PK Ripper project for over a year and I’m psyched to see it turn into reality,” “There are guys out there who have been waiting 20 plus years for the return of the PK Ripper.” For more info on this celebration of three decades of BMX and the PK Ripper, check out www.dcshoes.com/pkripper for podcasts and more.

red baron Challenge

the build up to the rBc began a couple of weeks beforehand with a crazy amount of plywood and pallets collected to construct all the ramps at the drains. Story by caleb Mondon Alex, Jeremy, Xave, Tom C, Coop, Adam and Zacii nailed it all together in the morning, with the ghetto spine, street course and a couple of different wallrides. A fair bit of riding and drinking went down, with onlookers drinking and watching Scott Schruers spin 3’s and 180’s through the street course and 180-bars off the zigzag kicker. While everyone chilled and rode the banks and the wallrides, only a few people rode the giant ghetto spine. Anybody brave enough to ride the spine had to pedal across the top of the drains and hop into a little kicker, on to the bridge and up the spine. Ben Halpin jumped the spine a few times before boosting it and throwing down tuck no handers three or four times. Nate Allingham undoubtedly owned the spine, pulling clean fufanus, an over-pedal back in and even a barspin to backpedal to over. Ben ate it a few times trying to 180 the one pallet-wide ghetto spine, coming close but not being able to stick the roll out. Nate took a couple of attempts and stuck a clean three on the beast. By far the craziest thing that went down at the jam was when Xave came out of nowhere to spin a massive three transfer from the spine to the 3ft dirt landing. After many attempts and a couple of gnarly ejections, Xave still didn’t give up and went on to roll away perfectly. You had to be there to really see how crazy this was.

Half way through the day Alex and Xave decided to organise a Bonedeth obstacle race from up near the small curved wall, past the spine, through the water and up the far bank to the fence. Three heats were run, with more and more obstacles being added to the course. The race claimed some victims, Tom Crawford coming off with a high-speed water slide and little Zacii with a jump up the bank to headbutt the concrete. At the end of the races, Xave came in first, Alex in second and Zacii in third. Another event held on the day was the long jump comp, using one of the banks and a garden landing. A lot of people entered, with Bronson showing that you can try to set records sliding on your face. Mark L did well early, but Daniel Donges set a massive record with his super racer steez. Liiv came close but couldn’t quite stick a clean landing. No roll away, no record, so Donga reigned supreme. To everyone’s surprise, the cops didn’t turn up to question why a bunch of guys were riding kids bikes in the drains, and everyone had a good time. Of course, the inevitable occurred and the dice were brought out for a game of C-lo. Be sure to check out the footage of this jam in upcoming videos. Thanks to Martial Clothing and also to Lifecycles for helping out with prizes, as well as everyone who put in the time and effort to build the ghetto course. There needs to be more jams like this!

Zombie hop

Here’s when your ‘92 Condor is a real handicap PHOTO Nat Cooke

The idea behind the hop comp was to see who has the highest hop in Auckland city. Mike Davies Basically who ever hoped the highest would win the RedBull trophy. Then when we hold the next one you have to bring the trophy back and who ever wins that time gets the trophy. Anyway the night turned out pretty rad, the RedBull hummer was there with the lights and sounds, TripleSix was there with prizes and so on. Basically a whole bunch of riders started out but it slowly thinned down into a few and it ended up Paul Beadle winning with a 40inch hop, the world record is 44 inches or thereabouts, so not bad eh!

Nathan Saunders, Yarra Junction Park

what can I say about Nathan Saunders? There’s so many stories I could tell and so many words I could use to describe the Nathan I know. Eni, meni, myni, mo, his riding flow the one I chose! Gorak Demonstrating perfectly in this photograph, Nathan clicks a look back across the widest section of the hip at Yarra Junction Skate Park. Every time I’ve ridden with Nathan he has always been an impressive person to watch and this day was no exception. Boomin’ big airs and blastin’ old skools was no tough feat at each park we rode this day. He’s always got something to say and always seems to be ready for a good time. The photo itself is using no special effects, even without a flash! The only effect was using my freshly acquired camera at 8 frames a second so this is only part of a sequence that illustrates how effortlessly and flawlessly executed the stunt was performed.

the loWdoWn NEWS & STUFF Jay and 300 new friends...

Jay’s jam

cancer is shit. no one deserves it, especially not a thirteen year old kid... Words & Photo by Michael Harris

I found out my mate Jay was sick after I rang him up one Saturday morning after he hadn’t turned up to the park for a ride. He told me he had been rushed to hospital the day before because he had cancer. Over the next few days we learnt a little bit more about it, he had been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. He had a tumour in his throat, on his shoulder and it had spread to his bones. Anyone that has ridden Shoalhaven Heads skatepark will have met Jay. He’s the kid that is there everyday after school and all weekend, not to mention he has more flow and style than any other little bloke I’ve ever met. As soon as I found out he was sick the first thing that came to my mind was ‘we have to have a jam for him’ and exactly one month later, it was on. At first I had only expected about 100 people at the most to turn up. Judging from the response I got over the first few days after I announced the jam it was starting to look like a whole lot

more were coming. When it came around to the day more than 300 people came to ride, chill out and to support Jay and his parents. No one, including myself expected the generosity of people on the day and we reached the amazing amount of $1,754.60. Every cent went to Jay. Some riding highlights from the day included, Kenny Ragget winning the bunny hop comp with a very respectable 38 inch hop, Luke Gorecki wining the long jump comp sending himself 27 foot from a 1 foot high kicker. Simon O’Brien spent more time in the air than a flatlander usually does and Thomas Glew landed his first whip to tap to footjam. Mitchell Binns said he would try a 360 flip if everyone donated some money, he got it third try and Luke Gorecki decided he would front flip out of the bowl if everyone donated again, his feet didn’t want to stay on the pedals so he made Thomas Glew flip the 2 foot high box, which he got done first go. The Jam was such a success that we are going to do it again next year. We all pray that Jay will be better by then and wont need the money we raise, but I’m sure every other kid out there with cancer can use it. A very special thanks goes out to everyone that helped me organise the jam. Trent and Sheree as well as Mitchell for being on the mic all day, Timmy, Bryce and all the heads lads. Moose for flying down from Brisbane and all the other people that travelled to get to the jam. Triple six for donating hundreds of dollars worth of giveaways, the bike shops that helped out especially Mark from Tippos cycles and EVERY SINGLE person that came out on the day and brought a snag, a drink and donated money.

(plus a b’day)

turning 25 years old, i decided i had better hold a birthday jam and with strictly bmx opening another store in ringwood, what better place than the freshly built park to hold it at? Words & Polaroids by Gorak So with Triple Six distribution and Strictly BMX keen to help out and support the day, we had a whole bunch of stuff to give away. With this I thought, in the true nature of a jam, why compete when we can raffle off some stuff and raise some money for a BMX shredder at the same time? With that in mind, Marc at Strictly BMX was more than keen to kindly donate some drinks to sell off to add to the donation for Jarrod’s knee reconstruction. So here’s me, armed with a camera no younger than me, shooting some Polaroid photographs of the vibes and the people that made the jam a huge success!

the loWdoWn NEWS & STUFF Louis Bolter jam whip. PHOTO nat cooke

Tim Hales day!

one day tim hales emailed me out of the blue saying he was having a jam at melville skatepark in hamilton. he sent me a flyer with a photo of beebop and rocksteady from the teenage mutant ninja turtles, but basically it just said there was a jam on. Mike Davies That was fine and the flyer was rad, but jams usually have a name so I decided to call it the Tim Hales jam. Later on I found out that was appropriate because it turned out the jam was for his birthday. The jam started around midday on ANZAC day. A whole bunch of riders turned up from all over the North Island which was relatively surprising seeing as Melville skatepark isn’t exactly the best park around. I guess a lot of people were super keen to shred and relax on a public holiday, either that or there is a lot of Tim Hales’ fans around.

At the start the riding was pretty full on and pretty much everybody was on their bikes. The park is kinda small though so certain parts of the park were shredded at a time. First was the big concrete hip. Mike from the PMP trails killed it with a bunch of dialled tricks like inverts, turndowns, lookbacks and tuck no hander’s all of which where super clicked. The next thing that got shredded was the bank to sub box and I would have to say that Lewis Bolter and Tim Hales owned it. Lewis did so many good tricks with ease, like foot jam whips, can can foot jams and he even mowed the lawns on it a few times. Tim did some clean 540 taps on it and a nice foot jam no hander. For the rest of the day everybody took it easy, they road around and shredded the park. Lots of tricks went down and lots of beer and sausages went down too. The jam started to come to an end and officially ended when Tim faked his own death at the bottom of the 12 foot deep bowel using tomato sauce as blood. The Tim Hales jam was a great day and it was a great way to celebrate ANZAC day and the birth of Tim.

kurri Kurri comp

on the 14th of april Bike trax in cessnock got together with the cessnock youth centre to hold a BmX comp at Kurri Kurri skatepark. Gus

The day started with a skate board comp and live bands were performing all day, with Fiffty Sixx headlining. Once the bikes got going it was plain to see that it was going to be a great day. The beginner’s class was won by a ballsy kid who was boosting the box like you wouldn’t believe. The battle for the intermediate title was hotly contested with “disco” Steve flowing the park for second and Todd O’neal getting way tech for first. The advanced class was a big bar only event, it seemed no one was running bars smaller than 28 inches, in the class Huffy showed some of what he can do for third, Jay Mcewan threw massive fakie tricks for second and Rhys Parker manualled his way to the win.

erindale blows up*

*(a mermaid)

e-dale jams are always fun. I think this is the second one held and it pretty much just consists of all the local canberra bmxers getting together on a saturday to ride and drink. Words & Photos by Nic Gascoine

22 ISSUE 25 JUNE 007

The best bit about an Erindale jam is that you can build the wildest and/or dodgiest stuff and everyone is keen to ride it. It’s not about the perfect tranny’s or the stunts. It’s all about getting buck-nitty and riding something that you will probably never ride again in your life, and for good reason...

Highlights of the day for me would definitely be seeing some kid do a candy bar over the spine / nose thing and landing dead flat and Luke ‘fitty’ Wainman slaying everything around the park and almost going out of the top of the wall ride on top of one of the brick tranny walls and jumping the judging table.

So with this in mind we started screwing pallets together. Such added features to the park were a wall ride on top of the sloped brick wall, a long quarter out of one of the banks and a kicker over the judging table. Now an Erindale jam doesn’t really go to plan, so the judging table wasn’t used so much for judging. Rather it was used to write abusive signs and to hold the ghetto trophy’s, oh and of course the blow-up mermaid sex doll?

In the end Fitty won it and got the much sort after trophy. But that wasn’t the end; people started throwing down money for someone to do a backie. After much fund raising close to forty dollars and two condoms were raised and Daniel Wheeler (or whee whee as he is know), stepped up and threw one out of the dodgy part of the bowl. So with two winners and a lot of drunken BMXers everyone went their separate ways until next year.

One upset for the day was the cops showing up before we even started telling everyone that they would come back later and fine anyone who wasn’t wearing a helmet. It never happened though.

A big thankyou goes out to Abe, Steve for kinda organising things and sorting out the trophies, and everyone else who helped ‘borrow’ pallets and screws. See you next year…

the loWdoWn NEWS & STUFF

a day in the life of:

claw

drew Balshaw, commonly referred to as “claW”, is always keen to ride BmX, be amongst anything BmX and drink booze. there’s pretty much never been a day when I’ve called claw for a ride and he’s turned it down. every spot would have been destroyed literally before he’d say no to riding his bike. he rides almost every day and spends his mornings helping out with the horses that his dad trains and so I thought it might be interesting to join him and see how he does it. Story and Photos by Gorak

Not being a morning person, I rocked up to his house at around 10:30am only to find out where he gets his mouth from, his Dad. They were both mouthing off at each other with no sign of it ending as they worked together to fix a horse float. From there he threw some hay bails around and fed some more horses while I snapped some photos and talked some shit. Looking at his property I was almost jealous at the size, he lives on a huge chunk of land that has its own horse track. You couldn’t ask for much more really if you wanted a bit of space to yourself. He checked his myspace, made me a coffee to ensure I was ready for the day and watched the Liam Fay-Hampton video section on his computer. It was just as that section finished and a brief encounter with some other BMX videos that we were ready to hit the parks and to wherever Claw would go. Briefly hitting Ringwood and then heading to Claw’s all time favourite skate park, Northcote, where we were greeted by the big, cold drops

24 ISSUE 25 JUNE 007

of precipitation that fell from above. Deemed un-rideable and after being met by Fink we headed to an indoor ghetto set-up that Claw had heard about. Hidden inside some deserted factories were some rad little ramps sheltered from the weather outside. It’s one thing Claw seems to always know, even though he doesn’t possess anything close to a license, but knows where everything is and how to get there. Right down to street names to the point where if I’m unsure and need directions, he’s the one I ask. After a good time there, we were all done and moved on to begin the festivities. In true Drew style, the closest bottle shop was found and drinks purchased. Drinking, shit talking, karaoke and randomness is pretty much my recollection of the final hours of that night until finding myself in a distant police station calling daddy to come get me and my car. I didn’t expect to be disappointed when deciding to spend the day with Drew and by no means was I. Never one to say no to a good time was totally proven and in good form too. So that’s a day in the life of Drew ‘CLAW’ Balshaw.

There are not many riders here so it’s mainly Will, Todd, Steve, Chad, Skads, Sam, Bennett and myself (Dan). The local park is filled with hips and lines, it has 2 bowls, a spine, box jump and mini ramp. Most of it is like 4 to 5 foot high, so not really big but awesome fun because everything links together. It has 2 bowls that hip into each other plus hips out of the bowls that lead to the box, which you can hit in every direction... It also has a fun little mini ramp with a small sub-rail that you can nibble at. There is not a great amount of street in Orange but we do have a super good curved wallride.... There are a few other good street spots here, but they are few and far between. Orange has no trails, whenever we get a set happening the council come along and doze them down. There are a few other good parks in fairly close range to Orange such as Parks which is about another hour west from Orange, simple sort of park… 6 foot bowl, 4 foot spine, box jump etc. There is also Bathurst, which has a fairly new park.... not a large park but its good fun. All round, Orange is worth coming to for a ride.... the local riders here are friendly and we are always up for meeting new riders. No matter what sort of riding you are into, there is someone here in O-town who can impress, the local riders here shred... everyone feeds off each other and there’s always a good ride going on.... Yeeeeeeeew!

colonizing China

recently nick richardson and myself made the trip to Shanghai, china for the asian X games, but it was more a chance to get to ride the ridiculous concrete park over there. Story by clint Millar

This park has to be seen to be believed. Imagine 16 ft deep bowls, 30ft tall wedges, over vert everywhere, 25 ft full pipes, vert spines and pretty much any crazy ramp you can think of. To be honest it borders on stupidity. Sure it all looks great but for general riding it’s pretty much overkill. Don’t get me wrong… I loved riding there and am very stoked to have experienced the park. It was just like nothing else we have ever ridden before and for this alone it was totally worth it! Oh yeah and Nick rode well enough to make the finals in park and ended up in 9th place… Bloody oath Richo! Yo yo!

the loWdoWn NEWS & STUFF much more boring because I had heard the song “Blondie hanging on the telephone” about 30 time from my Mp3 player already and this was just after 4 hours! I got in to the plane in Frankfurt and flew out of Germany. 18 hours flight time, 1 stop in Singapore, 3 big Macs, and “Blondie hanging on the telephone” for the 300th time I arrived at Sydney airport. I got my bike box and bag and went outside of the airport and lighted up a duty free cigarette and started putting my bike together. I had all my things crammed into my backpack and with my sleeping bag on my handlebar, it was only 5 am and I didn’t know what to do or where to go? I didn’t have a city map or anything all but I saw big building’s and I was thought this is the city so I jammed my bike box into a bin and stated pedalling. It took a while to get there but when I arrived there it was rush hour on a weekday with so many people about all so busy that I quickly wanted to go somewhere else? I had to ride to ride at least one park at my first day and all I knew of parks in Sydney was the Mini ramp at Bondi beach, so with that I asked for directions to Bondi and started pedalling my BMX. I arrived there some 4 hours or so later! And the Mini was gone but there was a skate park instead. There I met a local rider, and had my first Aussie session! He was nice enough to help me to get a phone card for my mobile and he showed me a hostel where I could stay. A few days later after chilling round Bondi I heard about a skate park in Campbeltown that was good so I went there by train and there I met a few very cool local riders at this park. We rode a good session and one guy told me I could say at his house, which was awesome.

A different view

hi my name is malte munkel aka sven! I come from the city of bremen in germany and for the last year i have been travelling through australia.

Like everyone I have always wanted to see new places, ride new spots and meet new people. So when Myself and five friends from Germany decided all go to Canada for a big trip last year, when the time came to buy flight tickets everybody was like “oh I don’t know maybe next year” I was so pissed off! Because I was the only one who was committed to go 100%. So I decided to go alone to Australia instead... I don’t know why I chose Australia of all places, as the only thing I knew about Australia was that it is very hot and that there are a lot of concrete parks? With that little knowledge I organised myself a visa for one year and bought a plane ticket, put my bike in a box took 5 t-shirts 2 jeans, some underwear, a sleeping bag, a few tools and some camera gear and then boarded the plane. I started in Bremen and I took the train to Frankfurt. The 4 hours train ride was very boring and I was thinking that even though this had only begun it will get

After that I met people and stayed everyday at somebody else’s house. I found a job with a local landscaper, and now I wouldn’t spend all my savings. My boss couldn’t say my name properly so he just called me Sven, and since then everyone called me Sven. I bought a van soon after and my new friends welded a bed in it for me which made me pretty free as I could now drive anywhere I wanted and accommodation wasn’t a problem anymore. After spending a bit of time in Campbelltown checking out Sydney and Canberra also I decided to move on and explore a bit of the country. I had a rough plan to make my way up to Brisbane, so off I went. After my car broke down 5 times getting hassled in Byron Bay for sleeping in my car I arrived at Beenleigh the only park I knew in Brisbane and there were a few riders when I rocked up. We had a session and then one let me stay at his house, which was pretty cool, and soon after He got me a job in a bike shop where he worked. From then on I stayed up there for a while nearly 5 months and I cruised from Steve’s place to my van where I park in a workmates Derek’s backyard, and also to my new good friend Raphael’s house also who I met in Brisbane. I have met heaps of people and they all show me the parks around Brisbane and always hook up sessions and we all go out and party. I have a cool job and from not knowing anything or anyone I have a ton new Mates and have seen so many new things and had a lot of news experiences. After Brisbane I went to Melbourne via Canberra and finished my trip up there for the last couple of months before heading home to Germany. I think it doesn’t matter if your in Germany, Australia or anywhere else in this world for that matter, if you ride and go with your bike to a skate park or trails or whatever someone would say “hey if you don’t have anywhere to stay?” Stay at my house! I love BMX!

metro Jam SIngaPore

Like riding in a sauna

It all started with an email from jay miron asking if i would be keen to come out to the metro jam again this year… i of course agreed immediately, looking forward to my first singapore experience. metro jams are always a blast and this one was to be no exception. Words by clint Millar A bunch of Australian’s were heading out including Ryan Guettler, Nick Richardson, Pete Radivo, Corey Bohan, Colin Mackay, Dave Dillewaard and myself made up the Australian contingent. It was great to see everyone and hang out for a weekend. The weather in Singapore was crazy to say the least. It was so freaking hot and humid that it was totally like riding in a sauna. It also rained erratically which made getting a ride in even tougher. Even through all this some very good riding went down by all present and the Australian’s definitely left their mark. Bohan, once again, proved that he is way more than the 3 time X Games Dirt Gold medallist that we all know him as. When Gary Young was interviewed for TV about who was his favourite rider for the weekend, he replied, ‘Dave Dillewaard… what more do you need? He can do everything and make it look better than anyone’ A very true statement for sure, Dillsey rules. Colin Mackay showed why he’s one of Australia’s most successful and pioneering riders out there. Nick Richardson started his international takeover in Singapore and gained many new fans far and wide (almost as wide as his Bloody Oath bars, bwrahahaha). Pete Radivo came within minutes of winning the best trick comp with a perfect fufanu to tailwhip out on the subrail, all while sweating pure alcohol. Ryan Guettler killed it period. 720’s no foot can can flairs, double whips, wallride to flairs and a death defying double backflip were amongst his runs. Ryan is the best. After such a fun comp Nick and myself had to head home but not after one last night of partying… the rest of the Aussie alliance stayed back for a week of BMX PIG… always a fun game for sure. Especially when it’s held on an exclusive tropical Island resort. Good times for sure… I am already looking forward to my next Metro Jam experience… Bring on that email once again Jay.

cooma Breakout

the sleepy new south wales town of cooma doesn’t usually see a great deal of action. Well there is the annual rodeo and the cooma show rates a mention but generally not much happens. Story by Jamie Mahon That all changed on Saturday the 19th of May when the town was overtaken by a bunch of BMX riders and a dozen Hardcore bands. The reason for this coming together was the inaugural Breakout Jam. It has been said that competitions take the fun out of riding and that can certainly be true when people take things too seriously, so the idea behind the breakout jam was to bring riders together in a pressure-free environment with fun as the main objective. Breakout was put together by John Graham and Brendan White from Emissary clothing along with Shane Whiting from Alternative BMX. Cooma was chosen mainly because it was somewhere different and nothing like this had taken place there before. The Cooma skatepark isn’t the greatest but a bunch of riders with great attitudes can really make an event one to remember. People came from as far away as Newcastle and Albury but the majority were from Canberra. I haven’t been to Canberra for ages and it was great to see the

new breed of younger riders coming out of Canberra. Lots of different styles on hand but everyone seems to get on well and feed off each other. Ain’t that how BMX should be! The addition of a curved wallride in the small bowl added something fresh to the park and was put to good use by Puni who fuf’ed it and Matt from Wodonga who foot-jammed the top. Matt was definitely one of the standout riders of the day with some big lines, plus loads of stunts all with mad style and on a borrowed bike with no brakes to boot. The bands were loud and did nothing for my hangover headache from the previous night. Local Cooma band “Lights Gone Out” were representing the scene but for me the bands were only background noise for one damn fine session of BMX. Backbone BMX donated an FBM frame that was raffled off along with a hub from Tempered Bikes, some mp3 players donated by Schoo’s Studio and a few other bits and pieces from local businesses and Emissary clothing.

There was an afterparty at one of the pubs later that night and shit was starting to get a bit loose as I was leaving around midnight. I’m sure there were a few sore heads the next day. All in all a fitting end to a great day that will not be forgotten for a while and there are plans for more of these events in the future so keep an eye out for info on them at the relevant websites. Cheers to Shane, John and Brendan for bringing it all together also to Hayley Redhead and Allyce Lewin for helping out on the gates. Jimbo for doing security, and everyone else who helped to make this event possible. Big thanks as well to all the businesses that helped out with sponsorship, support and funding. Welcome to the team When haro BikeS announced they were hosting a contest to find the newest member of the 2007 BmX team, most people thought it was too good to be true. But once word got around, slowly but surely it was clear there was no hoax. Words by kelly Mackay

Riders were asked to submit introduction videos, which were posted on vitalbmx.com. The top ten video entrants, chosen by Ryan Nyquist, Colin Mackay and Rob Darden, were then flown from anywhere in the world to Greenville, North Carolina to ride Nyquist’s private warehouse and take part in a reality show for Fuel TV. On January 16th the top ten riders from four countries were announced. They were Steve Woodward from California, USA, Mike Fede from New Jersey, USA, Marcus Tooker from North Carolina, USA, JJ Palmere from Pennsylvania, USA, Matt Sparks from Michigan, USA, Marcos Torres from California, USA, Josh Perry from Massachusetts, USA, Nick Cooper from Brisbane, Australia, Tony Watkinson from Liverpool, England and Steve Bohn from Montreal, Canada. All ten riders arrived in Greenville on the 15th of February, some having travelled for more than two days. Once all together and introductions had been made, they were thrown into a jam-packed schedule of riding and filming. The competition proved to be tough too judge with such a diverse group of riders. Matt Sparks pulled a tailwhip to tailwhip back over the box jump as well as attempting a huge hand plant on a 16 foot vert wall. Although he didn’t land it, he did manage to snap his stem but walked away without any permanent injuries. Steve Woodward pulled a bike-flip air on a 7-foot quarter and a fast-plant flip over the spine. Very impressive for someone who recently claimed he had never flipped a spine. Nick Cooper packed a bag of tricks including a wallride to truckdriver, can-can foot jam on the wallride and a 180 one hand, one foot over a ten-foot hip. The weekend brought some impressive riding. So impressive in fact, that Haro were unable to pick just one rider as they had originally planned. After hours of deliberation a decision was made that two riders would be made part of the team. The winner was announced in elimination format, the bottom five being eliminated first. Once the first elimination round was over, only Steve Woodward, Marcos Torres, Tony Watkinson, Marcus Tooker and Australia’s own, Nick Cooper remained to sweat the final results. At this point, not knowing that there would be more than one winner, Nyquist joked whilst announcing the winners, thus delaying what everyone wanted to hear. Eventually it was announced that Nick Cooper and Marcus Tooker would ride for Haro in 2007. The weekend was a great success and many thanks need to be given to Tony Degallado, Pete Demos, the whole Haro crew and vitalbmx.com for allowing minds of the industry to be open to new and exciting ideas and funding them to become a reality. The jam was planned to start at 7pm to ensure good darkness but technically started around 5:30pm with many of the locals and South Coast Boys showing up for a ‘pre jam’ roll. Stuff was turned up a notch with Menai’s favourite locals cruising in such as Donny, Dain, Fresh, Brad and big Mike bringing some style and flow to a park that is known as a stylish riders paradise. 7pm rolled around, and now with the lights glowing brightly it gave the park ‘erie’ look. But this didn’t stop the riders and the progression of the night. Tom Booreman rolled in fresh from his absence from the ‘scene’. This fact seems to have no effect on his riding with massive airs and his array of different and oldskool ‘trick bag’. We had a French man throwing down some crusty baguette styles. The night continued on into the glowing lights and the constant flashes of chrome and anodised parts, with many more riders turning up, enjoying the music, the food and the atmosphere. Most of the riders that were there were locals and it was great to somehow help in the local scene here. Bike Culture and Die Blonde will be putting on more and more jams like this every school holidays including the opening jam of Helensburgh skate park. Thank you to all that came and all that helped! Honorary Australian flat rider, Michael Steingraber has once again left our shores to follow the world flat circuit, we wish him all the best this year. Mike has been focusing a lot of time on some crazy new links and also on his Illustrator skills. Why you ask? Mike’s first designs look cool, especially since he learnt Illustrator and became a font designer in about two weeks! German engineering for sure!

Fast cars, hot pants & flatland...

Add some Young Divas and twelve flatlanders in orange T-Shirts and you have the Melbourne Grand Prix... Words by Ali

The virtual flat instructor...

We get an inside view from the creator of the worlds first flatland specific instructional website... Words by kevin czahor Being almost 28 years old now, I remember being 13 and watching RAD for the first time. The next thing I knew I had recorded the soundtrack off of the VHS and was listening to ‘Send me an angel’ in my garage trying to duplicate all the magic I had witnessed in this truly unbelievable film. Then I learned of BMXTRIX and I was hooked. Since then, it has been a cruel road of both off and on the bike experiences that I will carry with me for the rest of my days, but also leads me to where I am today. It was about winter 05 that I started to get back into flatland very seriously after many years on and off from the age of 13. Since my knees were still fairly injured, I had to take it easy, but riding my bike was pretty much all I could do. I was living back in Virginia, so it was easy to ride everyday, even in the winter, because of the mild temps. I slowly gained my flatland instincts and everything started to come together for me. Riding my bike everyday now, I’m at a point in flatland that I thought I would never achieve. I’ve come to learn how much dedication, passion and of course practice it takes to become merely a decent rider! My respect level for people dedicating their life to this sport can’t be expressed in words. I always tried to follow the motto “Do what you want in life, it’s too short for anything else.” I feel like even though I wasn’t seriously riding all these years, that I have always been present in the lifestyle of flatland. Now, it’s become reality, and I decided that I wanted to give back a little bit for how flatland has treated me in the past couple years. Flashback to a couple of months ago and I’m at the park, riding alone when another flatlander rides up. I couldn’t believe my eyes, this coming from someone who has ridden alone his entire life. He introduced himself as Artur from Hawaii. It turns out that Artur is pretty good. So, we started riding almost everyday and I had motivation dripping out of my mouth! Having just learned about Global-Flat.com, I was constantly downloading videos and making the occasional post on the forum. A couple of months later, after making countless posts, trying to help people with trick issues and sometimes even personal problems, I have come to understand that I can be more to flatland than just a student. I can be a teacher as well, helping to promote the sport all over. Other key players, like Terry Adams, Scott O’brien, and Bobby Carter have inspired me to try and protect the future of our lifestyle. I’ve always looked up to Terry ever since I saw BMXTRIX’s Burning Bike Festival video on him. Recently, I’ve seen all three of them and countless others do so much to promote our sport that it was purely

motivating and I just had to do something to contribute. Well, somewhat I guess. As long as it’s going to be beneficial to someone in our sport is all I really cared about. One day, T.J. Perry, a professional rider out of Richmond, Virginia, had a great idea for a flatland tutor kind of thing. I knew this was my opportunity to work with someone who had been in the sport a lot longer than I, but at the same time, I would still be able to contribute nonetheless. The idea got a lot of hype on Global-Flat, so I decided to run with it. After a week of design, the Virtual Flatland Instructor website went online Thursday May 3rd on a free hosting server, crtlalthost.com. It’s basically my revised plan of T.J.’s original idea. It is a flatland how-to site, but also a flatland tutoring site. The idea is to not only cover the basic tricks of flatland, but to also allow the flatland community to request tricks or parts of tricks that they are currently having problems with and for us to assess those problems and help in the best way we can. That is the reason I believe this will succeed, because it’s unique from any other basic how-to websites, as few and far between as they may be. Once the basics are covered, users can submit requests to add or update a trick tip or to request a brand new trick all together. The other major benefits are that we make instructional videos with commentary as well as an in depth text walk through and also have a page where users can see what requested tricks we are currently working on to bring to the site. And of course, using youtube as the video hoster makes the videos always readily available for anyone in the world, even if the site goes down. Check the site out now at http://vfi.ctrlalthost.com

Grand Prix time in Melbourne, some people think traffic restrictions, others think petrol heads and in your face advertising, everyone thinks about the high pitched whine that sounds like the worlds largest mosquito hovering over middle park. However, the 2007 event provided the opportunity to reintroduce flatland to a larger audience. Twelve riders from across Melbourne, Victoria and elsewhere, under the direction of recently returned Kiwi ex-pat Paul Knox tricked there way down the main straight of the Albert Park track. The instructions were easy, lead the pre race parade whilst dropping as much as you could before the loud beats of the Chemical Brothers “Galvanize” signalled to get out of the way and then head to the back of the scantily clad dancing girls whilst other people waved huge flags around and the Young Divas sung the national anthem. Sound corporate? That’s ‘cos it was. It did however provide an opportunity to show off what flatland is kind of about to a large audience of partially deaf race bogans and yuppie suits on junkets. All in all the positives seem to have out weighed the negatives. Yes all the riders looked the same but they all got paid for doing what they loved. Yes everywhere we went some box head in an official looking jump suit took the opportunity to develop his or her persona by telling us what we were doing wrong but nobody gave a shit. Yes we all got free and unrestricted access to the Grand Prix but again nobody gave a shit and we all went to Imax for a real ride. Highlights included Damon and Mitch tripping over from Launceston and Sydney respectively, seeing Half Packers side by side with Surfers whilst people from the crowd called out for Cherry Pickers, looking back from the top of the starting grid down the length of the parade (which I have to admit did look reasonably spectacular), Trevor King riding flatland (its like we were living “back in the day”) and best of all Mik’s chain exploding midway though the show forcing him to pick up the bits then scoot around for the rest of the event. The organisers seemed happy with flatland, I guess we’ll see if we are invited back.

In recent days, I have been speaking with Martin at Global-Flat.com about the idea of merging the VFi website with a long overdue how-to section for GlobalFlat. It has been agreed that this will happen in the very near future once Global-Flat is moved over to their new server. I’m very excited to begin work on this new section as it will turn into the main resting place for VFi. I would like to give a major thanks to BMXTRIX.com for always being there back in the day and inspiring me to give back to the flatland community today. I need to thank Artur from Hawaii for bringing his inspiration from the islands as well as riding and filming how-to’s for me... Thanks bro... Also, I’d like to give a shout-out to everyone out there promoting our lifestyle. Stay strong, Ride hard! Peace ya’ll, hopefully I’ll catch you in the states for Voodoo!

you would have to go back a while to find a flatland frame review in reformist. In fact, by my count it’s been over five years (summer 02 issue) since another true double diamond frame, the seminal div, scored a write-up. Words by ali However the changes in frame design since then have been amazing. U.S. bottom brackets have disappeared, integrated head-sets are standard and more and more frames have the bends, twists and turns of a Stephen King novel.

What’s your full name? My name is N.Huzaimy N.Hazin. People call me “Miey” (pronounced “me”).

Pokemon. I think I am heavily influenced by their style of riding. What’s your favourite trick/link at the moment?

How old are you and how long have you been riding?

Whiplashes tricks in any link. Period.

I’ll turn 22 this July and I’ve been riding since 16, that’s basically 6 years of riding. Yeah slow learner.

Who do you ride with?

Where are you originally from? I’m from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. How long have you been in NZ and what made you come over? I’ve been here like one year and a half and I came here for Auckland University. New Zealand is a really wicked place to be, good people, good place.

June the man. He is very cool, he takes me to a lot of riding spots around Auckland. I sometimes got to ride with Vic, Mizzy and Ian. What are your plans (riding wise) in the future? I want to be able to travel to different countries around the globe through riding. Meeting new flatland friends and shooting good riding pictures is something I always love and enjoy doing.

Your bike is pretty light... how light is it? Why do you like your bike to be light? Are you going to try and make it lighter than it is?

What’s your bike setup? Any mods?

You reckon? I’ve started to feel like it is getting heavier haha. By the way, my bike is around 10kg. It was among the lightest cats before this but not anymore with all new titanium parts, micro sprockets and heat treated frames popping out. I’m quite happy with the weight of my bike right now, I like it light because it is easier to manoeuvre the bike around and it takes less effort to make the bike under my control instead of the bike controlling my movement or something like that. Yeah another 1-2kg lighter is cool but not too much because for me very light bikes do not flow very well in certain links.

Handlebars: Suelo 9 Butt (190mm)

Why the colour scheme? It is deep pink with metal flakes. I’m really into colours. Colours associate energy to me, cool colours give out good vibes so I try to put this energy together into my riding. (Thanks Lordkay and Redza for the paint job). Have you always been brakeless? Why did you decide to go brakeless? I started riding with brakes. I needed brakes to learn the basic tricks. After 2 years, I’ve felt comfortable with my bike so I decided to take them off because I feel riding is so much fun when it is brakeless. What kind of style do you think you have? Smooth and flowing brakeless style is amazing. Riders like Mike S, Raphael (Chiquet), Alex (Jumelin) and

What do you think of the NZ flatland scene? NZ flatland scene is really tight. We have only a small number of riders but we really stick to each other and try to push the progression of flatland in NZ. Friendly, warm, fun, laid-back but fully motivated is how I can describe the riders here. Any other words? I would like to really thank my parents for giving me the chance to come to NZ in the first place. I love both of you so much. Thanks to June and NZ flatland riders. Big shout out to all Malaysian riders, Ilyas and Wantai from Devise Clothing (www.deviseclothing.com), Zuf, Afa and also Yaya Den for being a good friend. Keep it real and true people. Love and respect.

The true double diamond within Flatland is becoming less common as frames with bends that provide higher down tubes and lower top tubes become ever more popular with makers and riders alike. Of the four frames available from St Martin presently the Class X is the simplest. The thin diameter Sanko tubing used for the down and top tube along with a short back end (12.6” minimum) really come together to drop the frames overall weight to just under two kilos. The 74.5° head tube angle combined with 18.3” top tube creates the feel of a slightly longer set up, whilst the 72° seat tube and the positioning of the two main tubes provide you with ample room above and below. This also creates a look that is almost cruiserish. Another visual oddity is the huge head tube (is it just me or do all integrated head tubes look way too big) meeting the tiny top and down tubes which reminds me of two pool cues skewering a can of Red Bull. With what are reasonably standard angles for a flatland frame (perhaps the top tube is a little shorter than most) you could achieve the same feel with a number of different options but it’s the features of the Class X that really make it attractive. The major one of these is simplicity, as bent metal is weaker than unbent and the shortest distance between two points is the most direct, this simple but proven classic double diamond remains strong and light. The seat stays join the seat tube on the far side of the post and are also partly welded to the top tube, this should provide protection against the cracking, which is often seen when seat stays are welded to the seat tube alone. I also love the integrated seat clamp, this return to older design really works for me, I lost the 23 grams from the external seat clamp as well as unneeded height from the tip of the seat tube. (OK, so 23 grams is bugger all but its the simplicity don’t forget!) This frame is all about working in with your style, the Class X caters to those who do and don’t use brakes alike, with removable lugs and gyro tabs. The next step in this kind of frame evolution will hopefully see removable cable guides as well. The 10mm dropouts are long, very long and if you aren’t going to use the extra 2cm or so they could do with a trim down. If I had to say something negative about the frame it would be that the welds around the dropouts where the seat and chain stays meet were a little chunky but that would be the only bad thing. The frame I reviewed is the 18.3” top tube version but the new 08 Class X will come in 18.1” or 19” and in a new red colour instead of the silver seen here. s It seems so long ago that I started up Colony and I remember back then one of my biggest things to look forward to was the first full team trip. My first thoughts were always doing a team trip in New Zealand to coincide with X-Air and with plenty of hard work and planning, it became a reality. The entire Colony team were to get together at the bmxGames and go from there over to Wellington, NZ. We would head to the South island for a week of hanging out, riding and just having a good time before hitting up X-air. All the while filming for our first dvd release. story by clint millar ISSUE 25

It was awesome to see Freimuth take a swing at the ball style and then head to the other wicket dropping his 7 baseball bat and running in an arch like as if he going for first base

PHOTOS Nitai

On the trip we had Ryan Guettler, Nick Richardson, Dave Freimuth, Pete Radivo, Kenny Raggett, Haimona Ngata and a special guest in the way of Dave Osato. We also had a support team of Mike Lawrence from Triplesix NZ, Nitai as the official photographer and Scott Greentree as the secondary filmer. Since I broke my wrist a week before, I was stuck to just filming… no riding. Looking back on it all I don’t think it could’ve worked out much better. I’m truly lucky to have such a great group of guys representing Colony that all get along so well. Sure, there were stressful times but these were heavily out weighed by all the great times we had together. Here are some of my highlights… Seeing Dave F and Dave O play their very first game of backyard cricket. It was awesome to see Freimuth take a swing at the ball baseball style and then head to the other wicket dropping his bat and running in an arch like as if he going for first base, classic!

Stopping off at a seal colony by the road to hang with the seals. Only to see Ryan jump three feet in the air backwards to get away from an angry looking seal that barked at him like a dog. Hanging for 3 nights in Queenstown with the Redbull athlete house all to ourselves, it was amazing to say the least. The view from that house was unforgettable, truly spectacular. Redbull know how to do things right. Seeing my first ever glacier… So amazing to see a huge chunk of ice in 25-degree heat. That thing was so huge and cold! During the hottest day on the trip (or history) we were at the awesome park at Reefton. It was almost too hot to ride so we spent a good amount of time in a nearby creek while everyone made a dam… the water was so cold but Osato didn’t seem to care. I have seen Dave think nothing of the coldest waters in Canada.

Seeing amazingly pristine rivers in NZ in amongst the most picturesque landscape you have ever seen. NZ is truly an amazing place. It really is beautiful and you should take the time to get there someday. I know I want to again soon. It seemed at least one person was drinking pretty much at any time during the trip, like I said, it was a very laid back trip. More of a reward for everyone being a part of Colony and believing in my dream of what Colony will become. Thanks guys. As you can tell it was a very enjoyable and unforgettable trip, something I think we will all look back on for many years to come. Oh yeah, I almost forgot… We did do some riding too! Yeah we didn’t take our bikes for nothing and we hit up many good parks along our way. We didn’t find much time to hit the streets though, which would’ve been good. The time flew by so fast and it seems like a week wasn’t quite long enough.

Make sure you keep an eye out for the Colony DVD due for release in July this year. You will get to see all the riding action and also plenty of the behind scenes stuff as well. Road trips are not all about who did what trick I feel. The whole experience of being on the road, having constant laughs with your friends and just having a good time on and off the bike is what it’s all about. So get a few mates together, jump in the car and go out there and explore this world of ours. You will be surprised as to what your bike will help you discover about it all and yourself.

A Fuel TV road trip... Story and Photos by Colin Mackay Plans for this trip started about a week before the BMX Games in Sydney. Mavro, our man from Fuel TV in America, got a budget approved to make a one hour TV show for tha masses. So we decided to take a trip after the BMX Games finished in Sydney and finish at Cam Whites Jam in Canberra the following weekend. I turned into the unofficial manager of the trip and figured out a crew. First I sorted Corey Bohan and Dave Dillewaard to come on board. From there I got Stu-John along to film with his 1947 Russian weapon that may have doubled as a sewing machine. He also used a video camera as second angle to Mavro. And finally “Robbo” flew in from Brisbane to come along as host. Once in Sydney I knew someone else would join the trip, it was bound to happen. Senad Grosic, from Austria had been emailing me six weeks earlier about the BMX Games and I didn’t hear back from him, but to my surprise he was at the hotel when we arrived. He was sticking around for a few days after the comp and being his first trip to Australia, I had to show him around. We travelled China together a few years ago and he is a non-stop laugh, so I was excited to have him included. Sydney local, Chris “Danger “ O’Donnell was the last pick. He pretty much lived in our hotel room during the Games and showed no sign of ever going home. We would have been even more lost in Sydney without him, so we ended keeping him on for the whole trip. He’s 17 years old and it was his first road trip. He was thrown into a pretty pro trip that included daily interviews, 3 meals a day, 2 dialled rental vans, nice hotels rooms and all of it covered by Fuel TV. We had to assure him this was no normal BMX road trip. Bondi Beach was the first stop to relax after the big weekend of the BMX Games. We went swimming and Senad couldn’t stop laughing. He hadn’t seen such a beautiful beach and said that if his girlfriend in Austria saw the beach, she would definitely be crying with excitement. That night to make the day even better, Mavro got us a Hotel on the Bondi beachfront. It was ridiculous! We woke up and rode the cement park. Senad pulled a whip to nose-pick pretty fast and Danger boosted the hip. We then had a swim again before hitting the road to Five Dock. We arrived mid afternoon, to find the place was so slippery and had pretty large ramps. Not much to play on, so we sessioned the outside berms.

Dave Dillewaard way above Menai

After Five Dock we went to Cycology bike shop as Danger had to fix his bike. The shop was dialed and had all the latest bike parts and even had copies of BMX Bandits, which prompted us to go to Manly before the sun set. We hung out at the beachfront, entertained by Robbo racing the joggers along the path. He won every race. We couldn’t get a place at Manly so drove into the city of Sydney and spent the night. Senad and Corey ride for Redbull, so we decided to head into their main office in the city. While Senad and Corey did some clothes shopping, the Boss hooked the van up with cases of Red Bull. Since we were in the city we checked out the Opera House and Harbour Bridge area and then headed to some trails Corey got us invited to. The jumps were really dialled. Building and maintaining trails is a full time job and these guys put in the overtime to keep it smooth. With respect to the hark work, these jumps are private and you wouldn’t want to be seen there without an invite. Dane Searls hadn’t ridden too much due to an injury, but you couldn’t tell. He was blasting. He rules and I hope he goes well in the States this year. There was a pretty decent session going on with Bohan, Dillewaard, Toby Forte, Damo, Jarrod and some other locals.

On day 5 of the trip, we rode Menai Park. This park is really fun. Seeing Dillewaard and Danger over the hip was amazing and Bohan downside whip to tap the big quarter was also special. Dillewaard, Danger and Myself played “Add-on” where you begin with one trick and take turns adding a trick to the run; it can get pretty tiring. After Menai, we headed to Campbelltown to get a Danger demo at his local park. It’s always good to see someone ride their local park and Danger had it wired. Nice 270 whips on the 90 degree hip and a large quarter to quarter gap. Toby Forte joined us on the trip for a lift to Canberra and he was feeling out a quarter and airing it out. Unluckily he cased one air and slammed pretty hard. He was wearing a helmet which was a good thing, but still managed a decent cut on the brow requiring stitches. Senad pulled a tail whip to nose pick then hopped to hang five into the tranny. Robo got to toboggan over a KFC shop, which had been a long time goal of his. Bohan and Dillewaard trained each other around the park and enjoyed the hips. We finished the evening with a BBQ at Danger’s parents place. They took care of everything and were very welcoming. It was great to have a home-cooked meal after eating out all week.

We checked out of our hotel in Campbelltown and began the three hour drive to Canberra. Seeing a few roadside Kangaroo carcasses was a let down for Senad as he expected live sightings. Our first stop in Canberra was Back Bone BMX shop. Toby Forte had to get a new wheel built up after that case in Campbelltown. So while Rhysty got to work we got to hang at the shop and watched a video. Back Bone is 100% BMX and was loaded with all the latest stuff. I was stoked to see a few Colony complete bikes for sale, mixed in with the American companies. Toby dropped off a six-pack as thanks for the work and we headed into the city centre to get a hotel. It started raining so we didn’t get to ride anywhere. We then went through interviews for the show to catch up on the last few days. Senad was cracking us up because he kept saying “cackatoo” instead of “cockatoo” in his interview. He also said that the Spa at the hotel was like a body carnival. He calls teeth “your business card for your face”, and he asked Dillewaard when the sun set? Dave said “8:30-9.” Senad couldn’t believe how precise Dave was, he thought Dave meant “8:39” His English is really good but he comes out with some funny comments.

The last day of the trip we took a drive around the parliament area and then rode a little street in the city centre. Corey did some 180 lines and Danger whipped down some stairs and 360ed a pretty decent set. Smoothly. Cam White let us know the Jam was on at 4pm and we got really lost trying to find it. We lost phone reception, but saw plenty of Kangaroos to get the shot Mavro wanted. We got so carried away looking for Kangaroos that it was getting late when we found Cam’s Jam. The jumps were massive and it was windy as all hell, but it was a huge turn out and we got to have a few runs before dark. Cam has worked so hard in the yard in the months leading up to the jam and on top of that, the day was for a great charity. Unfortunately the first few jumps were pretty dark due to a light problem and we couldn’t ride at night. This road trip was really laid back and we didn’t stress on riding 8hrs a day. Fuel TV wanted to capture us doing what we would do on an everyday road trip and make a show of it. Fuel took care of us so well and we are thankful for that.

At first the, trip never really felt like we were on a trip, until things started to go wrong and get shitty. That s when I knew we were on a trip, that feeling of being with mates and no matter what happened, we would be OK. And even moreso, laughing about it in the future for us and now for you. We had all the bells and buckets and all the sheep and sleep we needed for a good time on this, one serious betting trip. Nate on the piss.

Top 5 dangerous moments?

Dangers hair straightener. What’s the story about an 18 month old baby with 3 Mums? OK, she called us poofters in tight pants cause she was a dyke thinking she had bigger balls than anyone. Alex is the craziest person when it comes to weird shit, so he took up the challenge making her more angry by saying lines like “who the fuck are you!” and “what you gonna do bout it”. That just made her lose it. She grabbed a wheel brace from the car saying stop f**cking swearing around my kid while she was saying every swear word there was! Alex was still being himself, which made things get even crazier. She spat on him and went to get back in her car when Nate decided to throw a can of drink at her, landing right in front of her splashing it all on her pants. We laughed she jumped back in the car and it was all over… A story from the trip? Danger had a new towel sitting there ready for him so when he got up he could jump in the shower. Well the night before Shane wiped his ass with a towel he used and left brown marks on it. Gorman and myself swapped the towels so Danger ended up drying himself with a shit covered towel… If you confront him about it I’m sure he will say “I had my own towel”. Well me and Gorman watched it all! We know what really happened…

Danger downside. PHOTO KimKim

Who on the trip copied who and in what way?

What’s your stream line Lego block self titled tit series called and what’s it all about? Blocks of fun. It’s all about cheap thrills and the small blocks are designed to kill small babies, it’s all part of the governments new scheme for decreasing scabs in Australia. Explain the science experiments on the trip? Dish washing liquid and frying pan’s ad a dash of extinguisher and walla! Compare this trip to school field trip with detail? The only difference was I got blowy of Shane... The experiments were the same. Top 5 playlist on the trip? KimKims mad Korean mix.

Fresh Matt

How did the bus make you feel and how does it make you feel now? It made me feel shit! And it still makes me feel like shit! After researching the star nosed moll, who on the trip reminds you the star nosed moll?

Does your iron horse need a grease up?

I dont know what you are talking about Alex…

Top 5 playlist on the trip?

Bega Hotel.

Pauline Pantsdown: I don’t like it Art of war

Tell all the kids out there what stick finger bendable nipple tassels are and what they were used for on the trip?

Its the white stuff you get out of a dogs ass?

At the drive in

Who lost the most dollars playing dice?

and anything that was on the ipods, we watched a lot of porn too…

Me, maybe $50 bucks.

Did anyone take full advantage of the blind man (Shane) on the trip?

Jamie for sure!

Nope, but I heard some stories bout what some people have done to him. If Tom wasn’t there I’m sure Shane would be lost!

Who won the most dollars playing dice? Did anyone take full advantage of the blind man (Shane) on the trip? Yeah, like standing next to him in the dark and he didn’t even know!

It was a rolling trip with many tit ribs and bar stops, not quite, but whiskey pumped and more or less a land to be travelled on. My spider was eaten by Shane. Next the weirdies came to visit. Jamie knows the wierdies really well because its a fumble or fiddle stix pornographic egg man. So anyway God said some cheese and ate some words and every person invented some goggle form life that was called a religion, which you put on over your eyes. The task was simple jump and spin, land and roll, all in a hell Charlie ticket, I even filmed on this trip. I saw the grassness of green and a 180 flip to flat off a wooden danger box. Bull dog bikes is a real company that Matt Damon could ride for, red shirt, red face, run to red ground. Easy you say. Sometimes you gotta lose someones head, especially when there’s a backdrop like this. Louis Bolter on the tooth tip. PHOTO Morrisey

Heading to New Zealand around the time of X-air is nothing new, especially for the Aussie contingent. This year myself and Travis Crisp took the initiative to head over a little early and spend some time before the comp to see what we could ride, who we would meet and generally experience more than the competition and associated security guards! So with a couple of weeks to spare and Trav having family in Auckland the tickets were bought and the bags were packed.

On one of the best days we drove a couple of hour’s south of Auckland to the small coastal town of Raglan. The park is nothing super crazy but it’s located next to some of the finest scenery you will ever see, and it has one of the best left hand surf breaks in the world up the road. The day went from scooping out a huge amount of water from the bowl with a tiny bucket to pretty much riding till we couldn’t ride any more!

The Auckland scene pretty much runs between Victoria Park and Davenport but there are a ton of other parks all over. The people you will probably meet will be some of the most down to earth people and surprisingly don’t bite when you bring up sheep and the usual lighthearted verbal insults! Simply put, it is one of the best scenes I have experienced and would recommend everyone head over and get yourself into mischief with your bike next time you have some holidays due.

The guys we hung out with mainly were the “Evil twins” Louis and George Bolter as well as Ewok, Andrew Lazurarik (on a similar trip from Canada), Luke, Dave Manconi, Phil, Bruce, Jono and Zombie Mike…. cheers for the hook up Dave, you rule! Anyway after a week we hit the road, I will let Louis take it from here…. Intro and photos by Steve Morrisey

The

road Story by Louis Bolter

XAir

to

It all came about when riding the new park in one of the most ghetto parts of Auckland, Otara. Manconi had brought down these two Australian dudes who we’d never met before, but they seemed pretty sweet. They had come over for the X-air contest and were planning on taking the drive down from Auckland to Wellington along with Canadian rider, Andrew Lazarick, who had come for the contest too. We set off on Tuesday and all decided to meet up in Taupo. So, crammed into our little red Toyota was me (Louis Bolter) twin brother George, Mark (Ewok) Davis and Andrew Lazaruk. We took it slow, stopping at a few parks along the way. One in particular was Paturu, which has to be one of the oldest and raddest bowls left in NZ. Andrew showed us how it was possible to do pegless icepicks on the roughest and biggest quarter there, about 12 foot deep with a foot or two of vert. George made some funny attempts at learning euro tables, which were a laugh and Ewok landed flat falling off to the delight of all the ratty kids that were all hanging around the bowl. We arrived in Taupo and met up with Jed Mildon, Lee Kirkman (who flew in the previous day), American Brian ‘’The Bastard’’ Anzelotti, his mate Darcy from Indiana and Steve, Trav, Dave Manconi, Bruce and Jono. If you ever come to NZ, Taupo park is a must to ride, it’s Jed’s local, which he shredded with some nice boosted flips and 360 inverts over the spine. Lee did some nice flairs in the bowl too and George did a huge three between the two six foot bowls. Canadian Andrew is a booster and did some clicked turndowns and textbook tabletops in the deep bowl while going about 7 foot out. As it got dark we all went back to Jed’s for a good ol barby and after a few drinks, headed down to the hot springs for a late nite dip! Hats off and a big thank you to Jed’s parents for letting a heap of dirty bmxers crash in their living room.

The

New Ze aland

Experience

Next day we all set off for Wellington, driving down the desert road which has some amazing scenery before arriving at Waiouru. Now let it be known that Waiouru is New Zealand’s army base and has a nice new park which we were all psyched on riding. Anyway, after about half an hour some very disgruntled army woman, who was bickering about us not being allowed on army land, kicked us out, which was pretty funny cause she was so serious. Making our way south we stopped a few more places along the way, one in particular is Waikanee, which has a nice deep bowl, some fun hips and a spine in and out. We ran into the Fly Bikes guys there who were also doing a trip to X-air too. Everyone had a good session, Dylan Smith was doing some huge airs and flowing round, Lee did some sweet nose wheelie lines round the place and Trav was shredding the rail with street trickery. Everyone else had a heap of fun riding there before getting back into the car for the short trip the rest of the way to Wellington. So that brings us to the end of the road trip and the start of the X-air weekend festivities.

PMP trails

trails are like pubs, there are only a few good ones around and each one is slightly different than the others. after frequenting all the ones in your area for a while you find your home or ‘local’. the one which suits you best, the one you enjoy going to the most, and the one with the locals you want to hang out with...

intro lester Perry Questions mike davies Photos Simeon Patience Location West auckland owners Pete, mike, ash and mark

The PMP trails in Auckland NZ are my ‘local’ and I know if its daylight there will be someone to hang out with, dig with or ride with. The PMP trails have evolved over the last few years, starting with the base ‘middle’ line and growing from there, with 4 main lines and even more transfers between these. Three key people are the custodians at my local and they do a majority of the work. Pete, Mike and Pom (PMP), spend countless hours building, grooming and riding the trails so they are just right for our next visit. Its not until you rise over the hill on the walk into the bush where the trails live that you see what new jump, line or crazy contraption the PMP boys have been working on. With winter looming and everyone having enjoyed a fruitful summer riding trails anyone who’s ridden them is “totally keen to dig through the winter” to have everything set for next summer. However as the colder weather sets in many of these peoples enthusiasm will die but one thing is for sure, the PMP (and new addition Ash) boys will be up at the trails on a daily basis, getting colds, flu’s and maybe worse all so their extended BMX family can enjoy another hot summer of the goodness that is the PMP trails.

We’ve been coming up here for about two years now, when we started the place was empty apart from one small skim jump that some racer kids had made. The PMP Trails are looking very dialled lately and it looks like a lot of work and time have gone into them, how long have you been digging there and how much work goes into the trails? POM We’ve been coming up here for about two years now, when we started the place was empty apart from one small skim jump that some racer kids had made. ASH I’ve been digging up here for about 6 months, but I’ve only been in NZ for a year. PETE I come up everyday in my undies to scare the kids off. POM Yeah Pete pretty much lives up here, that’s no exaggeration he puts some serious hours in. The rest of us come up after work and at the weekends, basically whenever we can. So you guys have been digging and been putting in allot or work up here for a while now, is this the first set of trails you’ve worked on or have you always been a part of a trails scene? PETE This is my third set in NZ, I also dug at Jeff’s Road and Forrest Hill. POM I used to ride a bit at Barry’s point road (RIP) and the old council trails in Devo back in the day but I didn’t really get involved with until Forrest Hill a few years ago, before then I was more into riding parks. ASH I’ve helped to dig a few sets of trails back in the UK, but I never lived close to any, it’s good to have some local trails. It seems like a lot of time and dedication has been put into the PMP trails, what makes you come out here and dig everyday instead of taking the easy road and going to ride a skatepark? PETE I hate kids with no idea what’s going on around them I’m too old for that shit. Good sounds, good mates and good weed that’s all I need. ASH I spend time digging so we have more shit to ride and I can’t cope with skate parks there’s too many kids and skaters that don’t look where they’re going. POM I find riding trails more fun and more challenging than riding park, you can have a good ride without doing any tricks and yeah it’s good to know there won’t be some blind midget kid on a scooter coming the wrong way up one of the landings.

What do you think makes digging and riding your own trails so rewarding? ASH You can build what you want and how you like it, everything get’s progressively bigger and more tech. PETE There’s no feeling like flowing through a line that you have built no matter how many times you roll in. It motivates you to build bigger and better lines. I also like riding berms, rollers and fun shit that you don’t find in skateparks. POM You feel like you are part of something positive, its good watching how things evolve over time and knowing how far we have come. What is you future plans for the PMP trails? PETE Just keep digging and hope they stay there. POM There are a lot of half finished projects around the place, we aim to finish those over winter as well as making some bigger stuff and re-doing what we have now. ASH Build some random stuff.

Jim Beam..... and my bike of coarse. What gets you keen to ride? Watching an Aitkin or Chase section or being really hung over. Where did the nickname “Fitty” come from? It’s from when I first started riding and my very first bike was a Fit series one. No one knew who I was until you said “little Luke with the fit” and it gradually went from that, to Fit Luke and then Fitty. My mates Lemke and Steve made Fitty up hehe. Describe your ideal day? My biggest thank you would definitely have to go to Rhysty at Backbone, he has helped me out so much from day one, thank you very much your the best! But then he will just start laughing and say some thing like “…I love getting loose!” Its not even like he gets wild due to a lack of skill, the dude has definitely got skills! I think he just genuinely likes getting loose.

tech KnoWledge RUBBER UP! Dave Dillewaard PHOTO Nitai

changing the face of tyres

rubber may seem like the most loW tech part of your ride, but rest assured, there are some BIg changes happening... Words by Mike Daly Tyres are one part of my bike that I never really took much notice of, I always used to run Primo Wall’s and then Dragonfly 5Aces tyres but didn’t really care too much either way. I guess the only real difference between the different brands and types of tyre was the tread, so if you rode dirt you might want a bit more tread on the front, but that was about it. I don’t think I ever really thought about the weight of my tyres. I knew that tyres with rubber sidewalls, like the Primo Wall, were heavier than the old skinwall Tioga tyres we ran in the 90’s, but those things blew out all the time so the extra weight was justified. Well I think the new premium tyres from KHE are going to change all that. Kevlar beaded tyres are nothing new, road bike and MTB tyres have been made this way for years and it seems that its taken way too long for the technology to work its way through to the, now ever so weight conscious, BMX market. As with A-head stems and internal headsets, I always wonder why it takes so long for ideas that would be great for BMX to become a reality. Anyway, Kevlar tyres are here, the first are from KHE but I’m betting that there will be a stack of other companies making Kevlar tyres very soon. The main advantage of using Kevlar is that it saves a whole lot of weight, and compared to other ways of

88 ISSUE 25 JUNE 007

saving a few grams it’s a relatively cheap option. For example, a regular 1.85” Primo Wall tyre weighs 740g and will cost around $35, but a similar 1.9” park tread version of the KHE premium tyre weighs under 300g but will set you back around $80. Now that might sound expensive for a tyre but it’s a whole 440g lighter than the Wall for only $45 more, and this means that with a pair of tyres you get a saving of 880g for around $90 extra cost… Compare this to some other ways you can save weight, like using titanium spokes to save around 200g off a pair of wheels for an extra $400 or so a pair. Or maybe using a Ti axle in your cranks, which will save you around 180g but cost an extra $100… OK so it sounds like Kevlar tyres are a cheap way to save weight off your bike, but is there a down side? Not that I can see... I’ve been using the KHE street tyres for a few months now and haven’t had any dramas. They feel good, seem to wear the same and you can put up to 120psi in them. They come in 3 tread patterns, street, park and dirt, and either 2.1” or 1.9” wide, pretty much the same options as any other tyres. So if you want to save a stack of weight for not so many dollars check out www.khebikes.com for all the options and keep an eye out for other brands bringing out Kevlar tyres soon.

BeatS & PIeceS GIG’S, DVD’S AND MP3’S The legend of the pixies continues. PHOTO Simon Pertot

The Pixies Luna Park 30th March 2007

If you missed out on seeing the Pixies recently then you are either under 25, not into what used to be called ‘alternative music’, or you were in a coma. the various side projects and solo tours have come out to australia before (frank Black, Breeders, amps) but never the original, awe-inspiring and legendary Pixies themselves, which explains why this gig was sold out within minutes of tickets going on sale. Words by astrobboy

When the band finally took the stage, before us stood a slimmed down Frank Black, Kim looking pretty much the same as she always has, constantly smiling and smoking cigarettes, Joey looking fairly young considering and Dave looking like he should have been in the Beach Boys with a big scruffy beard. ‘In Heaven’ began proceedings with Kim’s haunting vocals while the crowd looked on in disbelief as they were finally getting to see The Pixies live. The slowed down ‘UK Surf Mix’ of ‘Wave Of Mutilation’ came next with the start of many crowd sing-a-long. Being surrounded by three thousand people singing every word is a pretty amazing experience. The standard version of this song was also played later in the set. When a band who have had five studio albums finally tours, it’s safe to say you’re not going to hear every song you want. I would have loved to hear ‘Alec Eiffel’ and ‘Dig For Fire’, but the inclusion of other tracks you didn’t expect ‘Subbaculture’, ‘Holiday Song’ and ‘U-Mass’ helps make up for it. Surprisingly no tracks off ‘Bossanova’ were featured while every other album was covered. All the main crowd favourites were there (‘Monkey Gone To Heaven’, ‘Debaser’, ‘Here Comes Your Man’, ‘Gigantic’, ‘Where Is My Mind’) and with 26 songs played during the night I would

Between the main set and the encore, the band all came to the front of the stage and waved at the crowd, smiling and thanking the audience. With the crowd wanting more, Frank went into some theatrics miming that his throat was too sore to continue and he asked Dave to take over singing duties for the second last song ‘La La Love You’ which seemed an apt way to show appreciation to the crowd for the past 20 odd years. The night ended with ‘Gigantic’ which had Kim saying farewell to each member of the band and the crowd while the music continued. For a lot of people that evening ‘Head On’ summed it up best, “And the way I feel tonight, I could die and I wouldn’t mind”.

The new Fly DVD features two trips on opposite sides of the world, one in Fly’s home of Spain and the other in New Zealand. It’s basically a team DVD with Fly Bikes riders from all over the world on both trips. I really like the feel of the DVD and, as with most things Fly do, it feels like a lot of effort has gone into every part of making it, from the painted globe’s on the cover, to the music and all the “feel good” bits in the film. Riders wise you get Daniel Penafiel, Dylan Smith, Kevin Kalkoff, Stevan Lantschner, Luke Marchant and Tony Neyer in the Spanish section and Sergio Layos, Kevin Porter, Francisco Jimenez, Jesus Fuentes, Javier Ortega, Ruben Alcantara and Haimona Ngata in NZ. It’s cool to see all the familiar spots in NZ, along with a bunch of new stuff in Spain and as you can expect from the riders list the level of riding is very good. Overall I think this DVD has everything I’m looking for in a BMX movie, good riding, good spots, good music, interesting places, both familiar and unfamiliar and a nice mellow feel. I would say this is probably a movie to watch while relaxing after a big days riding, rather than one to pump you up before a ride. Mike Daly

Buying music these days is a whole lot different to back in the day. You watch a new ep of Props, there’s a song that sticks in your head. You hit up i-tunes, search and within minutes your Visa card has been hit and you have an album on your mac. This is the deal with Snowden. One song caught my ears, one listen to the album and I had a soundtrack to work/ride/chill too. East coast USA and on the JadeTree label, a combo that adds up to some fine tracks with more than a little stylish post-punk sounding good fun. holmes

say the majority of the crowd would have been happy with the selection. Not content with simply delivering hit after hit, we were also treated to a real performance. During ‘Vamos’, Joey brought forward a guitar stand and signalled to Dave, who proceeded to throw one of his drumsticks over Frank’s head who was standing between them, catch it and then play slide and create distortion using it. After finishing, the drumstick was thrown back to Dave who continued without missing a beat.

mIKe Patton PluS gueStS Mike Patton is easily becoming one of the most prolific artists of all time. The new album is not so much a band, but more of a soundtrack to the Sixties movie of the same name. Featuring Patton’s distinctive vocal styling with big back beats and guest stars from wide-ranging worlds. Namely, Kool Keith, Rahzel, Norah Jones and Dan the Automator plus Amon Tobin doing the business along with many a twisted Patton-moments stuck in there as well. The new Helensburgh Skatepark will be opening with a jam hosted by Bike Culture on the 15th of July. It starts at midday with music, giveaways and a bunch of riding. In related news, Bike Culture also have a complete We The People Millar Lite bike to give away, all you have to do is email thecomp@bikeculture.com.au and tell them why you should win the bike, or drop into the shop in Menai. Neil from Cycology is now working for Mongoose bikes after many years with Terry and co. He left on good terms and is looking forward to a change, he’s gonna be looking after warranties and other BMX related stuff for Mongoose. Andrew Gee took it hard and got some weird infection in his finger, two weeks of no riding and several visits to the hospital later he’s still alive and riding again… Talking of crashes, Rob McCann smashed his teeth out at Maroubra last week… get well soon Rob. The Martial drain jam went down last weekend in western Sydney, the set up included a 15ft high ghetto spine which saw some action for sure. The new park at Five Dock is now complete, including the section that joins the old bowl to the new, big skate sessions go down there at the weekends so head down in the week for a quiet ride… Kate Hardwick is no longer working for Freestyle BMX, Kate was the driving force behind the last two BMX Games and we wish her all the best in whatever she’s up to next. That said, plans are well under way for the 2008 BMX Games so you can still expect the biggest BMX comp in Aus to rock. In other comp news, keep an eye out for the BMX “pro tour” which will be hitting Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra and Brisbane early next year. There will be dirt comps at all stops along with park in some locations and points from each stop will be added up to get an overall winner for the year. We should have all the info, dates and locations in the next issue but in the mean time myspace them at: www.myspace.com/abmxpt mike daly

Hey everyone, you can tell it’s starting to get cold down here in Melbourne with the use of hoodies becoming more apparent. Liam Fahy-Hampton has moved to Melbourne and has been blowing minds already. Steve “Gorak” Taylor has bitten the bullet and purchased a house in the southeast suburbs of Melbourne, he also put on a recent jam with the help of Triple Six distro and Strictly BMX to help raise money for Jarred Roche’s second knee reco, which was a blast. Lou Reeves and housemates are rumoured to be opening a bike shop in the city called Anchor BMX. Troy Jackson recently got hooked up by Federal through Strictly BMX, Leigh Giason is riding for Bicycle Union through Stowaway and Jake Andrews is now riding for BMX Mad. Daniel Johnson broke his hand whilst off his bike by punching a tree. By the time you read this the new Focalpoint DVD should be nearing completion, check out the new site for all your BMX info, www.focalpointbmx.com. City park which has had a fair few gang style bashings in recent times on both BMXers and skaters now seems to have undercover cops floating about keeping an eye on things. The rain is really starting to set in as I am writing this, it’s pretty cold and hard to get a ride in. I think Skatos sessions are going to start happening again, which is OK, but not OK at the same time. That place is kinda average, the ramps are getting pretty old now but its always fun putting ramps out on the roller rink and messing around. Anyways, that’s a pretty random rant, the whole reason I’m talking about Skatos is cause the word on the street is that they are seriously talking about relocating to somewhere else with new ramps and what not, DOPE. Don’t know how long that will take though, I heard like three years ago that they were wanting to move. Josh Kathigitis is now on United through Stowaway, protown as... Word on the street is that he is now learning three tricks a month, to keep up his pro status. I can’t remember who told me that, I was drunk. Kane also told me that Liam Fahy-Hampton is on Animal, but I doubt that he has to learn three tricks a month, that dude is off the hook. In other Stowaway news, Haydn banks scratched his bike, he’s spewin... and apparently everyone has to look out for Kane, he’s going on a world domination tour, or something? Kane reckons Holly has big bangers, I think Kane is gross, cause Holly is 15 and Kane is 21. Next Cmbmx / Dishonour / Dougherty jam will be on at Skatos, date is TBA cause Tim sucks at being organised, but it will be soon and it will be rowdy. Also, by the time you’ve read this there will have been a jam at Barker organised by Rubinich that is getting a bit of flow from Dishonour and Cmbmx. Speaking of jams and comps, Adelaide was COMP CITY in April, with a whole bunch of piddily (read half assed) jams put on by councils and local shops. I think there were about four comps to coincide with the April school holidays. To my knowledge, they were at Elizabeth, Salisbury, Paradise, and Golden Grove. Out of those four, I have no idea which ones were good and which were bad, but I suspect they were all pretty lame. In a bit of a WHAT IS DEHNEY DOING update, he stopped skateboarding and has a bike again, it’s his fifth setup this year, I think he is trying to be like BOOBS or something. He also almost killed both him and myself by completely ignoring a red light. Pickle is still interstate and Davo (squeak) moved to Alice Springs. There have been a few travellers moving in and out of Adelaide too, keep a look out, and give them a spot on your couch. Cairns has been in Cairns having picnics with his family for a while, I think he should be back by the time you read this. My job is dull and boring, I sit at work and eat chicken sandwiches and drink iced coffee. Flagstaff Hill park is finished and it’s looking pretty damn awesome. I’ve heard mixed reviews about the bowl, some dudes love it and it’s pool coping, others can’t handle it and hate it. I can’t handle it, but I still have love for it. I saw a few pretty dope photos of Grantham getting all long-haired and high-aired all over that shit, dope. www. ugzine.com is back online with new forums and stuff… Travis from the bridge got pissed at me for writing last issue that he is shredding, so I’m going to piss him off even more by

saying that he is ruling lately. Every time I have seen him ride, he is going bigger and doing some ridiculous trick. I saw him do his first few whip airs and they were like 6 foot out of the coping, it was pretty dumb. Also his superman to whip and double whips at the dirt jam were crazy. Speaking of young kids ripping, Ryan Lloyd rules, he goes way high and has a fair chunk of style. Anyway, I think that is about it for the news this quarter, my head is aching and the phone on my desk is ringing off the hook. My job sucks, but your job probably sucks more. Keep it real and do lots of wheelies. Peace. James Wade

Nikki Buckard has headed over to the states now to ride and hang at Corey Bohan’s for a while in Cali then over to hang with Ryan Guettler in Greenville. I am sure he will have a great time while there. In Colony news we have added a few new faces to our flow team. Matt King, Toby Mathews, Nikki Buckard and vert ruler Tim Wood. All these guys will be getting flowed anything from Colony that they so desire. We have also been helping out two girl riders in the form of Peta and Ange both from Brisbane they are both riding custom Sect frames, gotta support the girls! The new website will be up and running soon, check it! www.colonybmx.com.au Nitai the pro photographer has got himself a bike again after over three years without one, yes it’s true... Nitai will surely be needing me to take pics of him soon, not the other way around. He is Millar Lite mounted, chock full of Colony parts and other Triplesix brands as a thanks for some awesome photographic work. Rumour has it Ryan Guettler has bought a second house in Greenville? Be ready for a park to be built out the back. Also rumoured is that there is a resi box jump somewhere in QLD now? maybe I will finally learn backies? Haha I made a drunken bet with Tobias Wicke while in China that by the Rebel Jam in August in Berlin I will be doing backies... the things you do... Haha. Nick Cooper won a spot on the Haro team and is now a full pro factory rider. Expect Nick to be flown anywhere in the world he so desires, he’s also getting a monthly check courtesy of Haro. Nick is totally stoked and I am sure will do his new sponsor proud. One thing that tipped the scales in his favour is this... When all the riders from around the world first got to Greenville they were asked to mop Ryan Nyquist’s park (called The Unit). When the riders were interviewed they all complained that they didn’t travel half way across the world to mop a floor. Nick’s response however was this. “I would mop this floor every day of my life if it meant I could ride this park for just 15 minutes” perfect response Nick. clint. In other QLD news Stu John wants you to know that the next Back to basics jam will be on in Brisbane on the 15th July supported by StMartin and Dragonfly…

WA seemed to be rather quiet these last few months but after a bit of dirty journalism tactics I’ve managed to scour the info to lay down for you to upload into the human computer. The ever-sexy Mike Bielecki now has a few hundred dollars less in his over loaded wallet thanks to riding brakeless. A brakeless tomahawk combo resulted in Mike taking a concrete smack to the mouth and thus snapping one tooth and smashing another out of its socket. I was spun out the other day when I got a phone call from a long lost legend, Steve Cuthbertson AKA Birdman. Having given so much to the scene in the early 90’s its good to know he’s still got a bike and living in Melbourne. So if you see a guy wearing a hat with wings on it riding a We The People give him some props, yo! Issue two of the FN zine is still in the making but will be out very soon with a jam to go with is release. The CHL have lost one of its main stay crew with the Venga bus going to different pastures. Yes no more party time in the said transporter, will there be a replacement? I’m not sure but I guess most people will have a good Venga bus story to tell their grandchildren. In other CHL news Khalen Young has taken over the world and is reeking havoc. Taking him three weeks to get his first win in America in the Elite Men’s class at a UCI/NBL round in Orlando then a week later winning the Spanish round of the UCI Supercross World Cup. Khalen has also taken the national title and has made the selection for the Australian team for the 2007 BMX world championships. Could he be the first to win gold in 2008 Olympics in Beijing? Time will tell. Wasted BMX have some new gear in stock with military hats and tee’s. Email sausage on wastedbmx@hotmail.com to be getting your self some wasted gear to get wasted in. After living in the west for almost a year Josh Mete is moving back to Victoria and his home town of Albury. His energy has rubbed off on many riders here and I’m sure that he will be missed. Props go out to Rhys Butler for flowing into the scene again, It’s good to have his charisma back in the scene. I was in Kmart the other day getting some new tubes when I was a bit spun out to see a set of Dyno knee pads with an image of myself on the packaging. On further inspection it was true to see one of my favourite images of a Lardyard front and centre on the packet. Now I just need to get sponoed so I can get me one of their sweet rides. Matt Lawton from Tempered Bikes has moved back to WA for a short time and is now living with some old BMX dude. He’s kinda missing the comradeship of the native Queensland riders but is busy demo-ing it up with Freestyle now, reppin it up for Cropthorn clothing and getting new products designed and produced for ever upward spiralling Tempered bikes arsenal. Look out for new things and log onto www.temperedbikes.com.au to be picking up what’s getting laid down. Matt would like you to go to www.cropthorn.com to scan the range of threads that are getting produced from the northern Queensland based company as well. Jay Wilson is a total shedder and has got the movie to prove it. Check it out at www.youtube. com/watch?v=S1SVX6Lwo6w and know that jay is indeed a stud. The weather in Canberra has officially shit the bed, after warm weather right thru till mid May, the snow dumped up in the high country and blew the chill into Canberra! But that hasn’t stopped crew from ripping it up on cold nights. Big news this month is that Martial Clothing and Back Bone BMX street destroyer Liam Fahy-Hampton has picked himself up some rather large sponsors, with a hook up from the Animal bike co taking care of all the parts and rubber he can thrash thru Jamie at Stowaway! Next up is 666, who will be supplying Liam with fresh kicks from Orchid, Holla, that will make me 3 pairs of shoes a month better off! Then to top it off Clint Millar calls him up and puts him on Colony, with talk of a signature frame, WTF. Well done dude, If you haven’t checked out the video part titled “Run at me slut’’ filmed by Dan Gascoine then where the hell ya been! Next up, Backbone BMX web site dude and the first customer has just been hooked by the newly revamped Federal team, Tyson is a shredder and seriously Rad dude and will be riding the new 1066 frame from Federal, big thanks to Jamie at Stowaway once again! Triple Six and Back Bone BMX have combined forces to hook up the brothers from different mothers Zac Miner and Thomas Fordyce, well done again boys, these kids have awesome attitudes and ride hard! This one is a real surprise cause he doesn’t even know himself, until he reads it here, but Chris Hardy please call Back Bone ASAP because 666 and I are hooking you up with a brand new 08 We The People complete bike, for being an awesome young rider, Chris hails from the Gungahlin region and has been tearing it up for years. This is a reward for your awesome attitude and all the best for the future! Keep your eye on blacklotusbmx.com for online ordering of their ripping sprockets, Black Lotus owner Dan Hunt just hooked himself a sweet deal with Coalition courtesy of the good guys at Stowaway distro, Yee Haww. Old boys Hillborn and Pappas are back on the scene after some hefty stints on the couch, good to see those boys out n about again! That will prolly do. rhysty

It’s that time of the year when we start moving into winter, it gets cold and wet and the days get short, but this year the weather has surprisingly been amazing, with lots of sunshine for the riders to enjoy. There’s been a bit going on up here in Auckland. The local guys out at the PMP trails have been working hard, the jumps look amazing and the level of riding is progressing a lot out there as well. Check elsewhere in this mag for more about the PMP… Triple Six distro has finally moved out of Mike’s garage and into a warehouse in Mt Albert. The place looks really good so expect more BMX goodies, maybe a show room to visit and even some parties if we’re lucky! Speaking of BMX distro’s, Stowaway has set up in NZ as well so there should be brands like FBM and T1 kicking around in shops soon too. The zombie hop comp was held a week or so ago and went off with a blast, Paul Beadle claimed the title with a massive 43 inches. In other news I wrecked all the tendons in my ankle pretty bad as well as breaking it slightly, which means a bit of down time from the BMX, but plenty of time to update and work on zombie-flesh-eaters.co.nz. So that’s about it for Auckland news, I’m sure I missed something out somewhere, but for now have fun... ride bmx! mike davies

These news updates seem to swing around in no time these days. Where to start... As of May Chris ‘Mad Dog’ White will be residing in Australia, soaking up the heat and laughing at us clowns freezing in NZ. Darren got his bike stolen out of his car a few months back, after a number of tip off’s from people saying they had seen it the cops finally picked it up. What was once a spanking new LAF was reduced to a paint stripped frame minus a number of parts, if you see some guy rolling around Linwwod on a beat up huffy with Fly pedals you will now know why. There’s going to be a box jump jam in New Brighton, Christchurch some time in July so check www.edhbmx.com for more info. Recently Gregor and Stefan came up to Christchurch from Queenstown on their way back OS, their stop off was just another excuse for partying. With Eddy Abbott giving them a place to stay it was bound to be more than just a party! Robbie Brown is now back in town for good, and no longer having to travel to and from Wellington. Asher Trafford is one of those kids that just rips, he goes big, pulls tricks big and when he crashes he crashes big, amazing character to watch. Flow Visuals has recently put out an 11 min web video with a handful of South Island riders in it. Jake Prebble and Brodie Knox are both amazing riders and have even better clips in the video. Over clicked turndowns, big airs and double whips are what these guys are about, you can check the video out at www.flowvisuals.co.nz. travis Mr Brad Greenstone crashed while performing an aerial stunt on dirt and upon landing (without the aid of his bike) his elbow connected with his kidney and thus split the organ in two! He’s not dead but rather pale looking instead. After being given the OK to drink Brad has adopted an alcohol only diet... He’s since lost three days in the last week. Mr Dave Coulson has left Queenstown! Kinda crazy but he made the move to the sunshine capital of New Zealand, Nelson and is loving it! We are all sad to see him go but are stoked that he’s having a blast up in Nelson! Make sure you come rip the snow down here dude! Haro rider Brian Vent is off to Woodward camp USA for some counselling work. We farewell foreign riders Stefan (USA) and Gregor (German S&M rider), it was a sad day as they had brought alot of intellectual conversation and a distinctive culture to our riding scene, or maybe not. We did have some rad times though and we wish them safe travels across the globe. Many a BMX traveller makes a stop here in Queenstown, you just never know who your gonna meet the next time you go ride? Paul Needham ventured this way for a short visit and rocked it down on the Frew farm with the crew for Bretts’ birthday celebrations. Dave Johnson also made the trip down this way from Chrischurch but was held back by the weather, it rained. Speaking of Chch, what the hell! I leave and the riding scene explodes, what’s up with that! The crew is getting huge and the progression is cranking! Ben Finley has returned from a trip home to sunny old England and is straight back on his bike, good lad. With winter on our doorstep the BMX minority of Queenstown are making the most of every dry day now cos its gonna start snowing soon! If your heading down this way for winter don’t leave your bike behind, an indoor skatepark called “The Shelter” has opened in Methven, near Mt Hutt, check www.methvencampingground.co.nz for more info. devin ISSUE 25 JUNE 007

LAST WORD SEASONAL BEHAVIOUR

A change of season Summer is officially over, and winter is well on its way. this brings a double-edged sword, as now the temperature turns almost perfect for riding! The long afternoons and the endless sunlight diminishes dramatically which usually means so does the amount of time one can get down on the 20inch.. Words & Photo by Steve Morrisey

If you’re like the many of us that work throughout the week, or even go to school or study then you will have started to notice how your riding that might have been every other afternoon is now getting limited to the weekends. With the mega abundance of outdoor public parks it seems that there is a complete lack of indoor and even lit up parks in this country. And although there is a couple scattered here and there, I guarantee it still limits one as to what and when you can get to ride your bike come the winter season. Now by most standards we don’t have it hard. I mean no snow and not a lot of rain (lately anyhow!) And although it gets hot in summer its still usually bearable in the arvo’s but still when winter comes along things tend to slow down a bit. Now if your lucky enough to have a indoor or a lit up park near you then you got to be stoked but things like heading to the local for a half hour roll after work or even street riding can be difficult! And as for trails well who digs in the dark let alone jumps? You really take on a basic need to ride anything! And this is the time you find people that purely live to ride shredding a vacant car park or shopping centre just to get those wheels rolling. Its kind of humbling as you get to a point often when you just want to get on your god damn bike you end up settling for any miserable object that is lit up enough to get your fix! While we are not even into the winter season fully, by now I am sure you and your mates would be thinking that you probably wasted too much of that valuable time that daylight savings of the long summer days gave us. Now the realisation that partying hard because you know you can wake up late, get rid of that hang over and still get a good few hours ride in with mates as it cools down isn’t as easy an option as the summer time gave you. Now you might have to turn in early or god forbid just have a chilled out night because the one or two days on the weekend might be the only time you get a chance to get a good ride in to make up for the lack of 20 inch time in the week, and if anything it is only going to be ever more limited! Its time to get in while you still can because there is a good 6 months of this to come and that car park will be sessioned to hell after that!
