Established in 1996, the Food Marketing Institute Foundation seeks to ensure continued quality and efficiency in the food retailing system and is operated for charitable, educational and scientific purposes. To help support the role of food retailing, the FMI Foundation focuses on research and education in the areas of food safety, nutrition and health.
The FMI Foundation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Just as a builder would inspect a foundation prior to increasing the square footage of a structure, a foundation leader evaluates the organization’s mission and support structure prior to increasing its scale of giving. Thanks to your engagement and financial support, this has been an exciting year of both growth and evaluation for the FMI Foundation. In 2014, we identified new opportunities within our existing mission’s scope that will help the Foundation Catherine M. Polley Leslie G. Sarasin grow and be assured of success. Paramount to Executive Director President, FMI Foundation this success is building the Foundation’s brand FMI Foundation President and Chief Vice President Health and Executive Officer, FMI identity and spreading our message wider than Wellness, FMI ever before, across our entire industry. With your ongoing support, the Foundation can and will continue to actualize new opportunities that outwardly manifest our mission and vision for the future. Here are some of the health, nutrition and food safety ventures that were given life in 2014: • We increased member engagement in FMI’s family meals initiative. Last January, we received more than 300 signed pledge plates at the 2014 Foundation Dinner from industry leaders in support of FMI’s Let’s Put Our Plates Together program. • We established new partnerships to support health and nutrition research. Through grants to the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the Foundation funded conceptual practice model activities to explore collaboration between retail pharmacists and nutrition professionals. • We reimagined FMI’s longstanding Health and Wellness Conference. At FMI Connect 2014, support from the Foundation helped make the Health and Wellness Zone a popular attendee destination for health and wellness education and experiential learning. • In the critical realm of food safety, we supported the next phase of Purdue University’s research regarding that demon of the deli case, Listeria monocytogenes, increased our support of the Retail Food Safety Forum and continued our ongoing support of the Partnership for Food Safety Education. • We invested in the future of food safety by funding scholarships for deserving food and animal science majors pursuing careers in food safety auditing. These scholarships provide both financial assistance and hands-on audit training experience to inform our industry’s next generation of food safety leaders. As we reflect on the Foundation’s 2014 achievements, we are thankful for past Chairman Steve Smith of K-VA-T Food Stores whose dedication and service helped establish a foundation strong enough to sustain our vision for continued growth. Our gratitude also extends to our new Chairman Scott Schnuck of Schnuck Markets, Inc. whose focused guidance will steer us forward toward our mission to advance education and research in food safety, health and nutrition. On behalf of the FMI Foundation Board of Trustees, thank you for your support as we continue to work toward advancing research and education in the areas of food safety, health and nutrition. I would also like to thank the Foundation’s past Chairman, Steve Smith, President and CEO of K-VA-T Food Stores, for his tenure at the Board’s helm. As you read the 2014 FMI Foundation Annual Report, I encourage you to not only reflect on past accomplishments, but also to think critically about the Foundation’s path forward. Since taking over as Chairman in June, I have given much thought to the Foundation’s vision. In the coming year you will see the Foundation grow its partnerships with other foundations and increase its scale of grant giving through proactive grant solicitation. The Foundation will also implement strategic communications to broadcast our successes and maximize fundraising capacity.

The time is rife with opportunity for the Foundation to solicit compelling grant ideas from universities involved in food safety, health and nutrition. A more proactive solicitation process will enable the Foundation to identify innovative and impactful programs of great industry significance that advance our causes. There is also opportunity for the Foundation to increase its impact through collaboration with other foundations and organizations that bring their own discrete capabilities and areas of influence relative to the causes we support. I look forward to working with Cathy Polley, executive director, and her team on behalf of the food retail industry to lead the Foundation forward toward accomplishing these goals. What’s new FMI Foundation Revitalization In 2014 the Foundation enlisted Oliver Wyman, a leading global management firm, to identify opportunities to increase industry impact and fundraising capacity through better utilization of capital, increasing the Foundation’s scale of grant giving and encouraging stakeholder engagement. Through a series of stakeholder interviews and discussions with Oliver Wyman, the Board of Trustees re-prioritized the Foundation’s focus areas to help direct giving and defined evaluation criteria to guide the decision process. The result will be a Foundation with a more distinct brand identity that is capable of greater industry impact as it strives to accomplish its mission to support the food retail industry through research and education in the areas of food safety, nutrition and health.

Gold Plate Awards In January of this year over 300 industry executives pledged their support to FMI’s newly launched family meals campaign, Let’s Put Our Plates Together, by signing their name on a dinner plate at the Foundation’s annual leadership dinner. Launched in 2013 as part of the family meals campaign, the Foundation presented the 2nd annual Gold Plate Awards in celebration of FMI members’ contributions to family mealtime experiences. The recipients of this year’s awards included First Alternative Natural Foods Co-Op’s Budget Bites program, Weis Markets’ Healthy Bites program and Publix’s Aprons program. Honorable mentions went to Village Super Markets, Price Chopper and Safeway.
ttFirst Alternative Natural Foods Co-op’s Budget Bites is an ongoing program based on simple-to-follow weekly menu plans, all under $50 per week, consisting of adaptable shopping lists and recipes scaled for families of two adults.
tt Weis Markets’ Healthy Bites is a company-wide nutrition and wellness education
program designed to make family meals easier and healthier. Weis customers are offered family-friendly meal inspirations, wellness news and nutrition advice through multiple media sources, including a Healthy Bites digital and print magazine.

ttPublix’s Aprons program offers customers weekly meal ideas with recipes
that are specifically developed to simplify meal planning, preparation and clean up. Meal ideas are accessible to customers through multiple media sources including circulars, online and in-store. Customers trust that each meal idea has been thoroughly tested by Publix to ensure it is both easy to follow and delicious, and that all ingredients are readily available for purchase.

FMI Foundation Retail Food Safety Forum Co-located with FMI Connect, the FMI Foundation Retail Food Safety Forum gave retail food safety professionals and suppliers the opportunity to address their biggest food safety challenges. Food safety experts discussed allergen control, innovations in cleaning and sanitation, employee training, produce safety and the impact of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act on retail. Attendees exchanged best practices and gained valuable insight to advance their food safety programs with actionable solutions to address their biggest food safety concerns. It is through this forum, and the others like it, where the Foundation sees its mission at work. 6

The FMI Foundation at FMI Connect Health and Wellness Retail Zone & Education Thanks in part to the Foundation’s efforts, the Health and Wellness community was out in full force at FMI Connect, FMI’s annual industry event, held last June at McCormick Place in Chicago, Illinois. From cholesterol and diabetes screenings to nutrition courses and medication therapy management, the Health and Wellness Retail Zone allowed food industry professionals to showcase the many opportunities that exist in health and wellness. The Zone offered best practices, insightful conversations and hands-on learning in pharmacist and dietitian counseling, retail clinics, health screenings, technology and telemedicine. “Kellogg has long supported the FMI Foundation’s efforts to fund health, nutrition and food safety research and education. In partnership with the Hartman Group and with the support of the Foundation, FMI enhanced its yearover-year survey research by integrating a cultural component. Drawing from existing ethnographic research and interviews with U.S. consumers, the 2014 report better explains why shoppers make the decisions they do and the implications of their attitudes and behaviors on supermarkets’ revenues and growth. The Trends report supports the Foundation’s mission and demonstrates the reorientation of consumer attitudes toward wellness and the opportunity for food retailers to become trusted allies in helping consumers navigate the relationship between food and wellness and food safety.

Purdue University Commenced in 2012 and concluded in August of 2014, the Foundation supported Purdue University’s research into the most effective and practical interventions to prevent and control Listeria monocytogenes in retail delicatessens. With the continued growth of fresh and prepared foods in retail grocery, developing mitigation strategies to reduce the prevalence and persistence of Listeria monocytogenes is a food safety priority. The Foundation’s funding supported the evaluation of the efficacy of deep-cleaning and sanitation standard operating procedures and the implementation of best practices and novel control strategies in retail delis.

Support Partnership for Food Safety Education The Foundation is a proud sponsor of the National Consumer Food Safety Education Conference. Through leadership development, networking opportunities and facilitated discussions about strategies to promote proper consumer food safety behavior, the conference seeks to advance core objectives of both the Foundation and the Partnership. The 2014 conference was designed to advance the knowledge and practice of health and food safety educators in support of Healthy People 2020, a federal initiative providing science-based objectives for improving the health of all Americans. American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy In partnership with the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy, the Foundation awarded three grants to pharmacy school faculty members to collaborate with food retailers on practice models involving pharmacists and dietitians. Through these grants, the Foundation funds research and education in the areas of health and nutrition. Awarded in 2013, the results of these grants were published in 2014 and presented at the 2014 AACP Annual Meeting. Ongoing research topics include pilot programs to assess the efficacy of interprofessional screening events at food retail locations, pilot programs to develop and evaluate the impact of educational programs on patient knowledge of blood pressure and self-management behaviors and the integration of interprofessional practice and education in store-based lifestyle modification classes. Family Meals Education and Research The Foundation enjoys an ongoing relationship with Common Threads, a contributor to the Foundation’s FMI Family Meals website. With complementary missions, the Foundation’s collaboration with Common Threads assists families shopping at FMI retail members to make easier, more affordable and healthier food decisions for every family member. In addition, the Foundation supports Columbia University’s National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse, whose research on the benefits of frequent family dinners supports Common Threads cause and motivated the Foundation to create the Let’s Put Our Plates Together campaign and Gold Plate Awards. 14

FMI Foundation Future Accredited Third-Party Safety Auditor Scholarship The Foundation awards scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled in food and agricultural science degree programs. Scholarship recipients have demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in food safety auditing and are chosen through a competitive selection process on the basis of academic ability, leadership potential, motivation and initiative. The awards are presented each year at the Safe Quality Food Institute’s annual conference.

International Food Protection Institute’s Applied Science, Law and Policy Fellowship The International Food Protection Training Institute is a leading food protection organization committed to developing food protection leaders within the various levels of regulatory agencies. The Foundation and the food retail industry support the professional development of public health officials to achieve the common goal of protecting the food supply and serving safe food. Fellows gain valuable insight from subject matter experts through seminars in the areas of food law, food science and food systems control. In addition, fellows are responsible for conducting a research project on a current food protection or regulatory issue and presenting their findings at the Association of Food and Drug Official’s annual meeting. Upon completion of the yearlong fellowship program, fellows return to their respective government regulatory agencies equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to serve as ambassadors for the promotion of food safety.
