Edge regeneration – Create diverse layers in city super block edge

Concept

Creating diverse layers on the edge is the main strategy. Focus on three edge layers, eco-layer, space-layer and activity-layer.

Shin Shan Road

The new developed east Taipei has similar super blocks. Assume one of them as Taipei’s urban block units, I studied Taipei city fabrics and would like to use design strategies I learned from the city to regenerate the super block edge .

Symbiosis – Community Housing Design

In Taiwan, community housing planning and design is a big issue. To experiment a new type of community design. I implant a parametric based form to experiment, to generate new relationship in a community.

Site: A complete block in the middle old district Tainan, Taiwan

Height study

Concept SymbiosisDesign Includes two high rise residential buildings and 18 random 3 stories apartments. I intend to create a new relationship between these two types of building type. In this design, different aspects of the quality of life have been considered. By using grasshopper tool, the relationship between different space elements, such as open spaces, circulation system, and building opening directions are carefully studied. Create a new urban block living quality.

Flows between up and down – Bicycle center design

Yi Lan’s image & culture element

Studying conceptual models

Concept Yi Lan county is a beautiful place. Famous for it‘s river and mountain sceneries. Bicycle industry is a newly developed industry here. By creating a large scale bicycle center in the center of city, and with diverse spaces which would possible to bring out Yi Lan‘s unique bicycle experience and activities. Echo to the mountains and the rivers, through flowing between up and down.

Strategy Use photography as a tool to grab the sense of Yi Lan’s unique landscape. Mountain, winding road connecting west Taiwan and east Taiwan, and scenes in the tree manufacturing factories are the three main ideas for me to develop the conceptual model. Use “flow spaces” to create new space experiences for bicycle riders and citizens and also try to generate new spaces perceptions. 2F plan

The site is situated at the corner of the intersection of Yo-ai Street and Xi-men Road. With this characteristic, I viewed the site as a natural entrance path of entire block. Site analysis: On one side, site faces Yo-ai Street. This street is special for its traditional Taiwanese arcade building type and it is characterize for its red bricks covered pedestrian path. The bricks function to ease the car speed, and formed an antique-patterned street view. On the other side, site is next to Xi-men road. Xi-men road as a main road, it is a lot wider than Yo-ai street which has more traffic. My design strategy is to take Xi-men roads’ easy-to-be-seen advantage, to establish a strong architecture expression of this local-based company image, either on the façade and the mass proportion. About the mass, first, the horizontal and straight division shows clear inner program division. Second, responding to the city, a walk path is designed to connect the original arcade on Yo-ai street. In the middle of the building, a cut through is made to connect the edge between street and the community inside the block, stretching the original red bricks path. I intend to naturally indicate people a new pathway to experience the block around this area. Offering citizens an opportunity to enjoy the inspiring urban landscape of Tainan.

Concept On the site, one of Tainan‘s oldest street, has strong Taiwanese traditional culture atmosphere. Being at the entrance of the street, site have to connect the present and the past. Create a new gate, a new local-based company to regenerate the street and excite the sense of this unique block.

The Winding Road- A Community Church design project. The site is at a newly developed residential area. Master plan of the surrounding area is clearly separated in grid system, which is quite regular. Finding that characteristic of the site, I would like to use the opportunity of this project to break the original grid system and create different aspects for people to observe the surrounding environment physically and mentally. While developing the form of this architecture, I decided to play with the tension and the natural unique aesthetic inspired by curve elements, to create series of distinct space experience, taking “ The Winding Road” as the main concept. Winding road is a road which you cannot see the end till the end. Winding road is a preparation for an entry of another space atmosphere. It can be a process walking beside a wall, gradually calming one’s soul and it can also be a stroll following the direction of a curve slope, with first seeing beautiful sky in front of the eye and welcoming any casually stop. This project is composed by a tall tower with organ built inside and stretched out masses with undulated roof, and all connected with different designed corridors. In this multi-functional project, in order to clearly connect diversified programs, I would like to create several different independent masses and connect them by interesting transition space. Through different forms of transition space, the perception of space also changes. In another word, these transitions play an important role defining variable space relationship, such as how believer, clergyman and the Holy Spirit interact and how community users and people who come for the church act.

Winding Road – Church design

Concept Church, a space where believer gets close to the Holy Spirit, is also a place people face their heart and life. Designed with peaceful color and rhyming arrangement of spaces to create an atmosphere for people to calm down and listen to voice and thought from their own.

The given site of this library design is in a triangle-shape park, which is surrounded by residential area and commercial area. Three landscape analysis elements-Matrix, Patch, Corridor, are used to define and analyze the surrounding of this given site. Through the redefinition of the relationship between objects and site, the design strategy was formed based on the observation and rules I create. At the beginning, I assumed plants and forest at the site as Matrix and viewed the supporting programs in the park as Patches. After colored both of the Matrix and the Patches area, the result showed that the Patches were likely being scattered randomly at the north part of the site. To look the site as a whole, the random orientation of the Patches not only cut the Matrix into an unorganized way, also they were lack of an architectural order to let people have cognition of the place and the relationship between different programs. I have two main strategies to reorganize the site. First of all, create a center of the place. I create a huge “hole in the forest for a new center, which is used as a free reading space. Second, create support place for the hole. I made curve shape book storage room to create the wholeness of this center. Having an intention to create a community landmark , the design is aimed to impose a new order and cognition of the place.

Site Analysis

2.Use velcro to combine and test the proportion and combination of massing. Simultaneously, developing the plan and housing programs.

1. Cross combinations of void and solid mass

Concept & site study The environment around the site is not in a good condition. Site is near the noisy main road and venders taking advantages of the surrounding arcade spaces. 21 selected combination results model pictures

In order to dealing with outdoor environment, I claim to search for the basic beauty of architecture to fight against the city. I focus on studying the proportion of rectangle spaces and try to create a good living home.

Concept Architecture is a 3 dimensional art practice. I want to experiment how different proportion and combination can effect the behavior of user and architecture itself. To practice a new building method and thinking.

Multi-sense workshop ď‚–Aided tool design for physical challenged students

During this one week workshop, our team would like to design a better device for physical challenged students. Through observing and participating student life in St. Raphael Opportunity Center, Tainan, Taiwan, our team aimed to help to improve a small trolley which help them to deliver juices during noon break in a school day. To participate and to know student life here and try our best to find the inconveniences and try to improve the trolley.

Disadvantages of the trolley now: Some physical challenged students are difficult to walk, but this device is aimed to let them try to walk and simultaneously try to deliver juice to students and teachers in the school. After experiencing the journey to deliver juice by ourselves and observing how students operate this device, we organized some problems and disadvantages of the trolley now. 1. 2. 3.

Difficult to notice the trolley is coming if oneself is in the office or classroom. It is okay for the trolley to go straight, but when it need to turn, it is difficult for people to control, especially for physical challenged students. The trolley can be only used by people who have particular height range.

Concept

Walk aided device + Bell + Trolley 1. Through studying the process and mechanism how the trolley being moved and operated, we would like to combine a bell device on it to solve problem 1. We find out a better relationship between the sound of steps and the voice make by the bell to have clear and continuously sound.

2. Design an adaptable device for students in different height to have the capability to use this trolley. Also considering the users’ visual perception and how this device help the trolley shift directions.

The relationship between the adaptable handle design and user ’ s body.

Review The design still has a lot to improve. The performance of turning is still not good enough, although it starts to enable more students to operate the device. The teacher also suggest that we could think how to design a direction guiding device in front of the trolley to help teachers or others to turn or pull the trolley when in emergency.

DDR workshop ď‚– Space experiment

Requirements Use chopsticks and robber bands to create density difference in space. 3 intense areas at least. Space limit: 3x3x3 (meter) Group: 6 people Time limit: 2 days

Concept The characteristic of chopstick is its solidity and liner direction. According to the requirement, we need certain amount of specific units to fill in the 3x3x3 space, so first, we develop a prototype of three chopsticks combination and then we start have massive production. At the same time, we studied the combination of how to connect hexagon and pentagon in space. Later on, we determine the density spots and doing by trying to structure the whole system.
