PUZZLE GARDEN Reconstruction Design of Campus Square
Individual Project Location: Baoding, Hebei,China Area: 1 hectare
This is a transformation design of the campus square. It is hoped that my redesign can transform it into a more dynamic one that attracts students to step out of the classroom and get closer to each other with the medium of landscape.

SURROUNDING PROGRAM The site is located on the south side of the school, near to the school gate in the east and south. By dividing the school building types, it is found that the site is surrounded by the teaching area and far from the living area. On the west side of the site is the school library. On the east side is directly the school gate, which is an important open school square and a significant place for students to walk through.

Route To The Bus Station Traffic node
Through the analysis of the traffic situation near the site, the students were divided based on the traffic flow and students flow. It is found that the site is an important traffic node for the students to meet in classes and after classes. Through site observation, three important intersections of people flow were detected.
N
SITE PROBLEM & VISION CURRENT PROBLEM
VISION
Crowd Chaos Smooth Traffic I hoped that the traffic problems can be solved during the peak periods of classes by traffic management.
The square has different entrances and exits, but since the main teaching and living areas are located on the northwest of the school, the northwest side of the square will always be congested at the peak of classes. The form of stairs aggravates the traffic hazard all the more.
Huge and Vague Enjoy The Sight It is hoped to increase the landscape and provide a place for rest and relaxation.
The landscape suitability of the site is poor, with a large area of hard pavement. Even the large fountain in the center of the square is closed all the year round. Therefore, for most of the time square is the place for students to walk through, but not to chat, rest or study out of the teaching building.
Cold and Lifeless Attractive Place The site is hoped to become more dynamic so that students are willing to walk out of the classroom and get familiar with each other. The overall school architectural style is relatively serious, short of a relaxing and lively atmosphere.
4
ANALYTICAL THINKING 1. Site
2. Create a bridge
3. More traffic possibilities
The site is the campus square in itself, with the east side open and the west lifted up to a two-floor platform.
To solve the traffic problem, I choose to hollow out the first floor of atrium and make the second floor into a form of a covered bridge.
Covered bridges create more possibilities for traffic and provide more space.
4. Nature elements
5. Landscape effect
6. Game elements
Add to the site the four elements of garden: topography, landscapes, plants, buildings.
Adding the garden elements enriches the landscape of the site and creates different types of space.
Inspired by children’s games, I add Tetris and circuit board gameplay elements into the site.
7. Space form
8. Attractive place
9. Become vibrant
The Tetris forms enclosed space, with circuit board elements to pave the way and to guide the flow of people.
The lifeless square becomes a vibrant space where people in the classroom are attractively invited to step out of the classroom.
The interaction between people makes the square even more dynamic.
5
LAYERING DIAGRAM Covered Bridge The bridge also takes the form of 45 degree, with some rest elements and landscape on the second floor.
Tetris Elements The Tetris is utilized as landscape elements to generate different spatial forms for functional division.
Circuit Elements Circuit elements are used as a paving form for guiding people flow. At the same time straw brick is laid along the lines to enliven the monotonous pavement.
Grid Form Space is divided based on the 3m * 3m grid, so that space can be more unified.
Base People became lively and cheerful at the invitation of the site
6
DESIGN
Half of the space is reserved open to the east side of the square, with the form of a tree array square to the west for guiding the flow of people. At the same time some seats are set for students to rest or bask in the sunshine.
There is a relatively enclosed courtyard in the middle, divided spatially and functionally through the shape of Tetris. On bot sides of the courtyard there are quiet rest areas and in the middle of the courtyard there is the meeting and leisure area wit relatively rich functions; mirror pool is placed at the center of courtyard, which is the main landscape. A shop is set up unde the corridor to provide services for students who are taking rests.
Under The Bridge
A glass-enclosed resting space creates a relatively quiet space, where students can read and study and see the outside scenery through the glass. Thus, an interactive space is formed.
Little Theatre There is an interesting sunken plaza in the middle, with steps of different heights to provide different ways of resting and meet the needs for some small assemblies and performances so that the space becomes more dynamic.
Covered Bridge
The covered bridge on the second floor connects the people in the site, creating more modes of transport for everyone. Upper and lower twofloor space also adds more fun to the site, so that people can have different space and landscape experience on the two floors.
7
Rest Seat In the form of Tetris, seats of different shapes and sizes are created, where people can take a rest, chat, sleep and bask in the sunshine.

CIRCULATION
The covered bridge at the second floor provides more walking entrances, to avoid the danger of bustling crowds of people in or out of classes. Students can enter the courtyard at the first floor and then go up to the covered bridge on the second floor into the teaching building. During the recess, students can go down along the stairs nearby and take a rest on the first floor.
The covered bridge is set to divide the flow of people, with traffic function on the second floor and leisure activities function on the courtyard on the first floor.
The hollowed courtyard connects the garage on both sides of the building, making the flow of traffic more fluid.
Circuit pavement plays a guiding and management role on the traffic.

LITTLE THEATRE An interesting half-sunken space is set in the center of the courtyard. This small space accommodates a number of different activities and needs, such as small shows, class or club activities, taking a rest all alone or with friends, etc. There can be even more possibilities.

CITY PARLOR Re Planning of City Street
Individual Project Location: Baoding, Hebei Area: 4 hectare
The project aims to achieve the goal of urban cultural revival by streets redesign, in order to solve the problems of traffic environment arising from urbanization as well as the lack of city appearance caused by the rapid development of cities.
14
Baoding is a famous city with a history of more than 3,000 years. It is known as “the vital place around Beijing” and “the south gate of the capital”. The city was built in the warring states period, has experienced vicissitude and changes during thousands of years with sound foundation. Having developed so far, the city has presented different landscapes and cultural characteristics of times in each period.

Through the analysis of the crowd around the site, it is found that Yuhua Road, as a main commercial street, has far more pedestrian volume than other streets nearby. Through traffic analysis, it was found that the street is a thoroughfare, and the daily traffic flow is also very large.
16
STREET DEVELOPMENT It was found that vehicle flow and pedestrian flow have increased dramatically in recent years with the city’s development; and the traffic pressure is becoming more and more serious.
As the political center, the political status of Yuhua Road is also gradually decreasing. At the same time, as the commercialization of the streets becomes increasingly severe, the cultural atmosphere of the site is becoming weaker and weaker.
17
We investigated the construction type in the vicinity of Yuhua Road and historical changes of the street.

Obscured Ancient Buildings
The bicycles are chaotic on the street; the petty dealers set tables at the street which blocked the sidewalk and made the street in disorder.
In the process of urbanization, many ancient dwellings and buildings were demolished, and the urban culture was gradually forgotten.
Ancient buildings were obscured by modern buildings and parking spaces.

The lost cultural features of the city are reintegrated and displayed through the theme square. The use of different landscape elements to reflect the urban appearance of Baoding in different periods gives people a better understanding of the culture of the city. In the park, there are some small spaces set for the residents’ activities, which are divided in the way of landscape, and the messy sidewalks on both sides of the road are cleared. Two parking lots in front of Zhili Govern-general’s Office and Dacige are cleaned up to transform them into an open square. It provides leisure space for people and can also improve the status of ancient buildings, thus promoting the development of Baoding’s tourism. There are also some opening spaces in the park, with some relatively enclosed spaces that can give people different spatial experience.

TRAFFIC ANALYSIS In terms of transportation, the traffic chaos is caused by the combination of a large number of pedestrians and vehicles. So we choose to guide the fast vehicles into the underground to form two-way lanes. The upper part is taken as a pedestrian street, which keeps a two-way lane, for the passage of public transport and bicycles. There are also bike lanes to meet the needs of residents for fitness and cycling.

NEGATIVE OR POSITIVE Rethinking Slum Problem and Urban Survey Guided Urban Design
Teamwork Project Role in the Team: Team leader, prototype design, furniture making, diagram making.
Location: Chengdu, China Area: 2 hectare As the process of urbanization continues to accelerate, “urban village has become an alternative and universal existence in urban development. In spite of the certain problems, it has been endowed with the spatial self-organizing force of internal order. Such a top-down force is exactly what our group hopes to explore and study. We hope our process of survey and design will involve many citizens to inspire them to complete further Spatial Agency and take the initiative to change their living environment, lifestyle, and attitude towards life.

EXPERIMENT We transported the eight furniture we made to the site, And we recorded the reaction and use of the residents for half a day.
Step 1 Making the furniture module at one-to-one scale
Step 2 The eight ready-made furniture modules was delivered to the site and placed at the entrance of the fifth alley.
Step 3 The residents found our furniture modules, moving them quickly to their own places, and even their homes.
Step 4 Under our instructions, residents took the furniture modules out of their home, and scattered them into different alleys.
Step 5 Man in the seventh alley used the device as a table for playing poker. Women in the sixth alley used our device.
41
RESULT ANALYSIS The experimental results were quite different from what we expected. The experiment was conducted in the streets where various self-organization phenomena have taken place; however, the self-organizing activities we had expected have never occurred. Some residents even moved our furniture directly into their home.
Mistakes in ideal circumstances
Normal Seat Size
The study on self-organization requires longer observation.
The experiment lasted only half a day . What we considered was people’s spiritual demands such as chatting and playing cards.
The size of 30cmx30cm used by local people
Mistakes related to the specific site
Material demand > Spiritual demand
REDESIGN Based on our reflection, modifications were made to the device. The size of our module was changed to 30 cm x 30 cm x 30 cm for local residents. A notice board was set up at the site to make it easier for residents to use the device and to draw more people to the site.
Planting
It is hoped that our design can facilitate healthy activities.
Chatting Playing Cards

Storage
A slide was installed onto one side of the wall. The furniture was fixed onto the slide, and then the combined transformation could be performed in the form of sliding.
While keeping the furniture from being removed, still the different combinations can meet residents’ different needs.
